Despite this being Beaver Falls 30th annual cruise, it was my first visit to the event. I had been to the town a few times in the past and was familiar with the setting and the hills one might encounter. Well, I did get a little worn out earlier than normal but I picked up something to eat and found a wall where I could sit down to rest while eating.

When I review a cruise or any type of event, I try to mention if there was food or refreshment available. Well, this one was different. In fact, it was extremely different! The cruise took place over 2.5 miles of 7th Avenue. I counted close to twenty vendors offering food and/or beverages. Everything from snacks, ice cream, sandwiches, pulled pork and chicken, brisket, gyros, hot sausage and Philly cheesesteaks was ready for consumption. It was almost like a food fair was happening and then a car cruise showed up. Maybe it was more like the other way around! Restaurants, pubs, churches, clubs and mobile vendors were set up along the way.

Beaver Falls has a nostalgic feel and provided a nice background for photo-ops. The main drag (7th Ave.) is four lanes wide for travel with parallel parking on one side and diagonal parking on the other. It was huge and some of the side streets were being used as well!

The event was also billed as the “9/11 Commemoration of Freedom” with the date also being the 20th anniversary of 9/11. As expected, there was a military flavor that day. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 862 Southwestern Pennsylvania led the Veterans and First Responders Parade. An opening ceremony honored the Victims of 9/11, First Responders, and Veterans. There was the Presentation of Colors and a 21 Gun Salute followed by the playing of Taps by David and Michael Bufalini. Glenn Angus played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes and Donna Groom then sang the National Anthem. For the “opening-finale” the WWII Douglas C-47 “Luck of the Irish” Warbird made a few passes over the crowd!

The Air Heritage Museum Members are active in preserving these planes which are an important part of our military and aeronautic history.

Cars, trucks, bikes and more cars were there too! I almost forgot about the reason I was there! LOL! Hopefully, you can get a realistic glimpse of what was there just by looking at my photos.

Now for the downside! There’s always a downside, right? Well, this one is entirely my fault. Early in the Spring I begin organizing a calendar of events I might be interested in attending. I start out with the list from the previous year and then make new entries and adjustments, revisions or changes. Somehow, I missed the fact that the 2022 Beaver Falls Car Cruise had been moved to June. 11. I tried to blame the error on my computer, but it was me! What a bummer!

MUNSTER CARS RETURN FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE

The famous sixties Munster tv show has long had a cult following with its fans. Fans of all ages just seem to be attracted to this unique show that ran for just two years from 1964 to 1966. Whether it was the crazy house that sat on the unforgettable address 1313 Mockingbird Lane, or perhaps the standout family made up of Herman, Lily, Grandpa, Marilyn, and Eddie. But many folks recall the iconic cars from the show each one a special in its own way. In fact over the two years the show ran one show that still stands out with car culture fans is the one titled Hot Rod Herman. For it was in this show where everything that car lovers came together in one complete package. From the whole idea of Herman going to the drag strip to take part in a drag race. In this drag race an early idea of Pinks where Herman puts up the family car up and of course loses it to Lead-foot Baylor. From this loss came up the concept of Grandpa building the Dragula to win the iconic Munster Koach back. With the whole episode being filmed at the historic Lions Drag Strip which was renamed for the show Mockingbird Heights Drag Strip.

If one person was to recreate this standout Hot Rod Herman Munster show episode it would be John Sbrigato. His massive collection of tv cars include The Munster Koach and the Dragula. Both cars with a great deal of history. The Munster Koach is number three that was built by custom car builder George Barris. While that car is famous, the Dragula that Sbrigato owns that carries the most history. The Dragula is the real deal number one car that was used in both the tv series and in the Munster’s Movie titled Munster Go Home which was released in 1966.

How does this iconic car wind up in Sbrigato’s collection? Well that is very interesting story! After the Munsters tv show and movie were done the car was put on display in the Chicago Historical Society Museum located in Chicago, Illinois. After its run in the museum came to an end it was bought up by some famous folks who were looking to open a bunch of themed style restaurants which were called Planet Hollywood. One of these were planned for inside of the Caesars Casino located on the Atlantic City boardwalk located in the Atlantic City, New Jersey. So up into the rafters in Planet Hollywood went this iconic tv car where it stayed for twenty years. When the Planet Hollywood in Atlantic City closed, the Dragula was taken down from inside the restaurant. What happened next is where the story gets sort of nuts depending on who you talk to. One story had the whole car tossed into a garbage dumpster in back of the casino. Well, that is not correct. In fact the car and a bunch of other great Hollywood memorabilia was moved to a warehouse in Florida where it stayed. One day Butch Patrick (yes the very same Butch Patrick who played Eddie Munster on The Munster show) heard that the Dragula was going up for auction. Patrick made a quick phone call to Sbrigato and informed him of the auction and shortly after Sbrigato won the bid and got this famous piece of automotive and tv history.

When Sbrigato got the car it looked nothing like it did back when it was seen on The Munster’s tv show. Since it was used in the Munster’s Movie, a number of changes were made since Herman (Fred Gwynne) needed to drive and race the car in the

movie. The notable bubble top was taken off and replaced with a roll bar for the racing scenes. Also the time spent hanging in Planet Hollywood took its toll as well. So Sbrigato needed to make some big time updates to get the Dragula back to it’s original form and style.

Among the updates done to the car included getting the front chassis back to the original color, taking the brass headlights back to the way they looked in the tv show. The Tombstone license plate redone in the actual marble like in the tv show, proper casket handles. All the chrome was also polished up and re-plated where needed. The rear roll cage has been made removable and the famous glass dome has been put back on along with rear parachutes and rear grab handle which Herman used to stop the car on the show. Also on the back 15x10 Radir wheels were placed on the car. The car has also been refitted with “Dupree chrome dome fuel pumps”, which can be seen on the lower left side of the chassis, these fuel pumps have been missing since being built. A great deal of work has been done to get the Dragula back to the way it looked back in the day.

One of the first times that Sbrigato got the car he did a show with Butch Patrick and I happened to be there and it was very cool to be a fly on the wall listening to the stories as Butch took a look at this car for the first time in quite sometime. As he told the stories you can see the way the car was built by George Barris back in the day. It was the simple way that Barris did things back in the day that made all of his cars stand out in each of their own way.

In the that same way that the Dragula has stood the test of time, so has The Munster Koach. As before mentioned The

So flash forward to the present day and there is a brand new Munster movie ready to come out and hit the big screen. This movie was made by noted heavy metal rock and roller Rob Zombie. Zombie has long been a fan of all things horror as well as the Munster’s show and the custom cars built by George Barris. In fact, back in the day one of Zombie’s most famous and iconic songs was titled Dragula for which the video for the song featured Zombie driven around in the Munster Koach. So with this movie comes a brand new set of Munster fans both young and old. In fact during some recent Zombie summer shows Sbrigato brought both of his Munster cars to be put on display. When you see the reaction of fans as they came into the show bring full circle why the Munsters tv show remains a cult classic with everyone both young and old.

Sbrigato continues to tour with both the Munster’s Koach and the Dragula around the country. Many of these show are done with Butch Patrick along side of the cars telling stories about the day that Grandpa defeated that Lead-foot Baylor and won back the family car at the drag strip. Both of these cars are truly part of the history car culture as well as tv history as well. Through Sbrigato’s hard work fans will be able to check out this cars for many years to come and allow the older ones to flash back to the good ole days of tv and at the same time tell the younger folks about how fun those times were.

This is a 1965 Ford Falcon wagon. This car has travelled from Ohio to British Columbia to Arizona and came with the original spiral notebook used by the original owner to keep track of his mileage. My mother bought it for my dad after years of waiting for an old car that he could take to local shows. “Freddy” as the car is called, was purchased new at Chapman Ford (Ohio’s first Ford dealer in 1913) and still retains the original dealer sticker on the bumper. The car has an inline 6 200 ci engine and is a regular at Tony Maloneys and Bakers Square with an occasional trip to Laurel Square on Saturdays. You will always find the latest issue of Cruisin Times on the passenger seat.
