Chair’s Foreword It gives me great pleasure to present this year’s Annual Impact Report on behalf of the Trustees of Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind. The last year has been unprecedented, one of the most challenging times that has affected everyone’s aspect of normal day living. There are major health and well-being inequalities across the South Wales valleys, with one of the poorest wellbeing rates in the UK, which has been a key feature in feeding into the very high Covid infection rates and deaths in our communities. It has been a very difficult year but there is optimism for the future. Now is the time for the charity sector to step up and work in partnership with the wider health, social care and housing staff to respond to the new needs that exist. I am proud to pay tribute to all the staff of Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind who were able to step up and adapt its services to people’s real needs during the pandemic and also how the services will be able to respond to the aftermath of the social restrictions the whole country has endured for so long. I know CTM Mind is prepared for the future and will continue to support individuals, giving a clear focus on people in poverty, children experiencing trauma and suicide prevention. I, the Trustees and the Leadership Team will ensure that the focus remains on organisational resilience, which is being true to our values and purpose and thereby ensuring that CTM Mind remains sustainable and responsive to those who need us. Clive Jones, Chair

CEO’s Foreword I am delighted with how the charity has supported people with mental health needs over the past year, we have been able to adapt and respond at a time of unprecedented uncertainty. We’ve been able to maintain our services by switching over to a digital offer but more importantly we’ve been able to apply key worker principles when supporting some of the most vulnerable people living within our community, reaching out to people in hospital and those experiencing homelessness. It is with credit to my Team who themselves have experienced worry and anxiety in such uncertain times. This Annual Impact Report gives you insight into the work that we have achieved and the difference we have made to those people who have used our services. We’ve got much better at measuring the difference we make across all our services and it’s that evidence that gives us the confidence to do more. It is with testament to our funders, including the Public Sector, Grant Givers and our Supporters and Fundraisers that have enabled us to do what we’ve done, it is to them that I also remain grateful. I look forward to delivering on our next strategy which places growth, sustainability and excellence at its heart, all important elements for better mental health. Julian John – Chief Executive Officer

“I really appreciate the help I have been given and I have the literature to help me continue my journey. My practitioner was there throughout for me and always answered any queries I had.”
Case Study: Sarah - Active Monitoring Service When Sarah first came to us, she was experiencing anxiety, depression and was stressed about work feeling that Covid 19 had a significant effect on her wellbeing. Sarah needed support with coping strategies for her anxiety and low mood to be able to return to work and lead a more normal life. As part of our Active Monitoring service, Sarah had access to books and leaflets that provided her with the tools and techniques to practice. She worked hard and sent her practitioner weekly progress updates and discussed with her practitioner every week the techniques she had been practising. Sarah comments: “I was supported by my Practitioner throughout and we also practiced some relaxation and breathing techniques, which I continue to use. I feel so much better. I have a welfare meeting with work coming up and I intend to go back to work at the end of January, working from home.
“My dog was recently ill and I dealt with the situation really well where as before I would have gone into total panic. I have now introduced the techniques I have learned into everyday life and when situations arise I look at the bigger picture, a technique that I have now learned. “I really appreciate the help I have been given and I have the literature to help me continue my journey. My practitioner was there throughout for me and always answered any queries I had. It is a wonderful service and I would recommend it to anyone. In fact, my work (Bridgend College) have been interested in my feedback to maybe recommend this service to others.”

Case Study: Wendy - Carers Star Project I am a carer for my husband who has Parkinson’s disease, I see to most of his needs with carers attending once a day. I have health issues and have spent this year shielding to protect both myself and my husband during the pandemic.
The wellbeing box I received was a great lift and made me feel happy. I have already used some of the wool. The telephone support has really helped me, also being informed / signposted to other organisations has also been helpful.
On times, I have felt extremely isolated, I have engaged with the Carers STAR project as it helps me to voice my concerns and thoughts. Just recently he has needed to stay in hospital long term to be assessed to determine if full time care is required.
I felt supported by my Practitioner and CTM Mind throughout this year and feel thankful for all the help I received.
After many discussions with my Practitioner we agreed and felt the best way forward was to continue with regular telephone support. With the Practitioner’s help I am feeling much stronger. I have suffered with anxiety for some time and I am grateful as my Practitioner gave me a lot of her time and support to help me. I have been helped with filling in forms and with other practical support. I have had the best support emotionally, with regular check in sessions for which I am very grateful.
I am looking forward to a new start and to feeling safer. I am informed that I can continue links with the project through the Peer Support group through the WhatsApp, which I will think about.

“We feel that Katie valued this service more than the crisis team as this was a very personalised, tailored support service.”
Case Study: Katie - Residential Resilience Project When we were first introduced to Katie, she was living in a hostel in Merthyr Tydfil and had high mental health needs. Her life was chaotic and on occasions she was having irrational thoughts, which led to self-harm on a regular basis. Our response to Katie’s needs was swift, and Katie started to gain trust with our Mind Practitioner who helped Katie to manage and address her irrational thoughts in a safe manner, and gained access to CTM Mind’s counselling service to support Katie.
Through Katie addressing her mental health issues she was able to manage her accommodation to a high standard. Katie was referred to Garth Newydd Court for the next step of her move on. Katie moved on successfully to a home of her own at Garth Newydd Court and continues to benefit from the service.
Initially, our Mind Practitioner met face to face with Katie, and on occasions carrying out daily check ins. During the current pandemic this moved to a telephone service, again this was tailored to meet Katie’s needs. Katie’s confidence began to grow and when she recognised she was having a bad spell she would request to speak with our Mind Practitioner. We feel that Katie valued this service more than the crisis team as this was a very personalised, tailored support service.

Fundraising & Donations In 2020-21, the total amount of income generated through fundraising and donations came to:
£ 45,645 Tom James - Brand Ambassador We were delighted to announce ex dual international athlete and rugby player for Wales Tom James as our Brand Ambassador in January 2021. Tom’s career spanned over 15 years, playing for Cardiff Blues, Exeter Chiefs and Scarlets. He represented Wales on 12 occasions and scored two tries. He is Cardiff Blues’ current all time top try scorer. “I first suffered symptoms of mental health back in 2008, but managed to suppress those feelings until 2018, when I suffered a break down. Since then, I have learned how to cope better and I speak regularly to my psychologist and family. Since going public, I have had so many messages from others commenting on how I have helped them to talk about their troubles and seek help. I also feel passionate about raising money and awareness for Mind. It is an honour to be a Patron of Cwm Taf Morgannwg Mind.”
Tom’s Sports Memorabilia Auction Shortly after becoming a Brand Ambassador, Tom organised a Sports Memorabilia Auction - the proceeds of which were donated to us. Tom generated a total of:
£ 5,250 Tom’s memorabilia included signed shirts from rugby and football stars across the UK.

Our Response to Coronavirus We started 2020 -2021 during a UK wide lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic. We had already put into place a series of measures to ensure the safety of our staff and those using our services. We knew that the Coronavirus pandemic would disproportionally affect people with mental health needs. In response to this we quickly moved our support services online and created a ‘Virtual Front Door’ where people could access the support they needed. Our services teams worked tirelessly to ensure appropriate systems were in place so that we could respond to the emerging themes. • More than half of adults (60% of those over 25) and three quarters of young people (74% of those aged 13-24) said that their mental health had worsened during the period of lockdown restrictions, from early April to mid-May 2020. • Loneliness has been a key contributor to poor mental health. Feelings of loneliness have made nearly two thirds of adults’ and over three quarters of young people’s mental health worse during lockdown. 18-24 year olds are the most likely to see loneliness affect their mental health. • People do not feel entitled to seek help, and have difficulty accessing it when they do. 1 in 3 (34%) adults and 1 in 4 young people (26%) did not access support during lockdown because they did not think that they deserved support. (Mind - The Mental Health Emergency - How has the Coronavirus pandemic impacted on our mental health, 2020)
Covid-19 support social media graphics targetting people across Cwm Taf Morgannwg
In response to this, we released a series of social media campaigns encouraging people across Cwm Taf Morgannwg to get in touch with us if they needed mental health support. All our social media campaigns included mobile numbers of specific members of staff for people to speak to someone directly. Everyone who got in touch was offered a ‘what matters’ conversation, from this point people were able to access our services.
19
We released a series of staff profiles across our social media and ‘we are here for you’ videos to encourage people struggling with their mental health to get in touch. We delivered a range of carers webinars, provided targeted online courses which were tailored towards the impact that Covid had on our mental health and wider social detriments.

Some members of our team were Key Workers on the front line of the fight against the pandemic.
