As we head into the second leg of CULS’s 123rd year, we are excited to continue holdingeventsthatstaytruetoourvalues of improving accessibility, widening the social impact of our initiatives, and equippingyouwiththeskillstoexcelinthe legal profession. We want CULS to continue remaining a place for everyone, lawstudentornot.
Lent term marks the beginning of Springtimeandlongerdays,andCULShas a foray of events lined up to match the energyofthenewyear.Wearedelightedto welcome Lady Rose and Lady Simler, two esteemed Supreme Court Judges, to speak withourMembersthistermaspartofour Speakers’ line up. Furthermore, our refreshers’ socials and themed social and welfareevents(thinkValentine’sDay,and PuppyTherapy)willtideyouthroughthe term, with weekly welfare drop-ins to boostyourspirits!
OurNon-Lawdepartmenthasabusycalendar aheadforLent,fromorganisingtheNon-Law toLawconferencewithotherUKUniversities and numerous career panels exploring legal career paths for STEM students. Meanwhile, our Pro Bono department is organising our Flagship Pro Bono Awards, which was recognised by Prime Minister Keir Starmer lastyear.Withthesecondpartoftheforeign affairs trip also occurring in Lent, we are guaranteedaneventfultermahead.
Most importantly, I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to the CULS Main Committee once again, who have worked so hard to make this term card possible, by comingupwithnewideasandbringingthem to fruition. LadyRosewascalledtotheBarbyGray’sInnin1984.She practisedasabarristerfortenyearsbeforejoiningthe GovernmentLegalServiceandservedinHMTreasury,the MinistryofDefenceandtheOfficeofCounseltotheSpeaker oftheHouseofCommons.In2006shewasappointedtoher firstjudicialroleasafee-paidChairmanoftheCompetition AppealTribunal.Shewasappointedtofurthertribunalposts andbecameaRecorderintheCrownCourt,Criminal jurisdictionin2010.InMay2013DameVivienwasswornin asaHighCourtJudgeintheChanceryDivisionwhereshesat foroverfiveyears.ShewasappointedtotheCourtofAppeal inJanuary2019andtotheSupremeCourtinApril2021.In herroleasaJusticeoftheSupremeCourt,LadyRosehasbeen involvedinanumberofimportantcasesacrosstherangeofthe Court’sworkfrompubliclawchallengesconcerninghuman rightsandScottishdevolutionissues,totaxcasesandcommon lawcontractandtortcases.

Therewere47StatespartieswhovotedforFergal.Fergal qualifiedasacorporatelawyerin1999atFreshfields,after studyingatTrinityCollegeDublin,TheUniversityof Salamanca,TheUniversityofCambridge,andTheUniversity ofLaw.Hespecialisedincommerciallitigationandthenserved forover20yearsatfourinternationalcourtsthatoperatein EnglishandFrench.Hewascounselfortheprosecutionin someofthemostcomplextrialseverheldconcerningmass humanrightsviolations.Theseincludethetrialsofformer BosnianSerbleaderRadovanKaradzicattheInternational CriminalTribunalfortheformerYugoslavia;ofgovernment ministerPaulineNyiramasuhukoandfiveothersatthe InternationalCriminalTribunalforRwanda;andofKhmer RougeleadersattheExtraordinaryChambersoftheCourtsof Cambodia,whereheholdsthepositionofReserve InternationalCo-Prosecutor.Alongsidethishespeaksand readsFrenchandSpanish,andreadsItalianandPortuguese.

LadySimlerwascalledtotheBarbyInnerTemplein1987,having readlawatCambridgeUniversity,andcompletedapost-graduate diplomainEUlawattheEuropaInstitute,Universityof Amsterdam.ShepractisedattheBaratDevereuxChamberswhere shebecameHeadofChambersbeforebecomingajudge.Shewas appointedtotheAttorneyGeneral'sCivilPanelAin2001andas JuniorCounseltotheInlandRevenue(CommonLaw)in2002.She tooksilkin2006.
In2002shewasappointedRecorderontheSouthEastcircuit.She wasappointedasaDeputyHighCourtJudgein2010.Shebecamea JudgeoftheHighCourtKing'sBenchDivisioninOctober2013.In January2015shewasappointedPresidentoftheEmployment AppealTribunalforathreeyeartermwhichendedon31December 2018.
HavingservedasHighCourtLiaisonJudgeforDiversityshewas appointedchairoftheDiversityCommitteeoftheJudges'Council in2019.SheisalsoamemberoftheCivilExecutiveTeamchaired bytheDeputyHeadofCivilJustice,reportingtotheMasterofthe Rolls.ShewassworninasaLadyJusticeoftheCourtofAppealin June2019.

TheIISLfocusesonthepromotionoffurtherdevelopment ofspacelawandexpansionoftheruleoflawinthe explorationanduseofouterspaceforpeacefulpurposes.
ProfessorDrKai-UweSchroglalsoservedfrom2014to 2016asChairoftheLegalSubcommitteeoftheUnited NationsCommitteeonthePeacefulUsesofOuterSpace.
HeworksfortheEuropeanSpaceAgencyESAasSpecial AdvisorforPoliticalAffairs.Between2019and2021,he wassecondedtotheGermanFederalMinistryfor EconomicAffairsandEnergyinBerlintosupportthe GermanPresidencyoftheCounciloftheEuropeanUnion. Until2019,hewastheChiefStrategyOfficerofESAin Paris.From2007to2011hewastheDirectorofthe EuropeanSpacePolicyInstitute(ESPI)inVienna.Priorto this,hewastheHeadoftheCorporateDevelopmentand ExternalRelationsDepartmentintheGermanAerospace Center(DLR)inCologne. ThisyeartheForeignAffairsExchangetookplaceinVienna!Wewerevery excitedtofacilitatetheexchangewithELSAAustria,connectingustolaw studentsfromacrossAustria.Thetripfeaturedmanydifferenteventsand activitieswhichallowedparticipantstogetaflavourforalllifeasalaw studentaswellasimmersethemselvesintoVienneseculture(withthebonus offestivetreatsandtraditions)!
SomeofthelegalhighlightsonthetripwerevisitingSchoenherAttorneysat LawattheircentralViennaoffice.Throughthiswewereallabletolearn aboutthedevelopmenttracksforcorporatelawyersandthedifferent opportunitiesopentolawstudentsinAustria.Wewerealsogivenatourof theSupremeCourtbySupremeCourtJudgeDr.ErichSchwarzenbacher. ThiswasaninvaluableopportunitytohearmanyfascinatingstoriesfromDr Schwarzenbacher,whilstlearningaboutthearchitecturalhistoryofthe building.WewerealsoinvitedtotheAustrianConstitutionalCourtand Parliament.
Theconnectionbetweenlawanddiplomacywasnotforgottenonthistrip,we wereverygratefultobeabletovisittheUnitedNationsOfficeinViennaand takepartinaMUNstimulationwiththeYoungUnitedNationsAssociation Vienna.
Alongsidethelegalopportunities,wetooktimetoexploretherichhistory andcultureViennahadtooffer.Sufficetosaythatmanycoffeehousesand Christmasmarketswereexplored,butitwouldnothavebeenacompletetrip toViennawithoutavisittotheopera.Thus,onDecember12thwemadea grouptriptoseeaphenomenalproductionofHänselandGretelatthe Volksoper.
Withadditionalfreetimetoexploresomevisitedfamousartgalleriesand museumssuchasthe‘KunsthistorischesMuseum’currentlyholdinga “Rembrandt–Hoogstraten”exhibitionwhichfeaturesRembrandt’sfamous self-portrait.Ourfinaltwoeveningswerespentinafiercelycompetitive cookingcompetition(featuringhome-madeapplestrudel)andafinalgroup eveningmealatatraditionalVienneserestaurant.Timecertainlyflewby whilstwewereinViennaandwearereallylookingforwardtohostingour buddiesfromAustriainMarch.TherewillbeeventsopentothewiderCULS communitysodokeepaneyeoutontheCULStermcardandInstagram.

TheDeSmithMoot,sponsoredbyOne EssexCourt,willcontinueinLentwith thesemi-finals.ThisisCambridge's mostprestigiousandadvancedinternal mootforindividualparticipants. Participantswillgenerallyhavehad somepriormootingexperience,and problemscanbeonanycoreareaoflaw.
TheBPPTeamMootwillcontinuein Lentwiththesemi-finals.Itisateam moot,withproblemsinanycorearea oflaw.Thereisnoneedfor participantstohavehadpriormooting experience,andthereareno restrictionsonteampairings.
TheCuppersMootwillbegininLent.It isateammoot,withteamsrequiredto befromthesamecollege.Noprior experienceisrequired,andproblemscan beonanycoreareaoflaw,makingthisa greatintermediate-levelmoot.Allfour roundsareexpectedtotakeplaceover thecourseofLent.
