INTERNATIONAL LAW AT STAKE: A DISCUSSION ON SOUTH AFRICA, PALESTINE AND THE ICJ WITH PALSOC, MENA GIRLS, AMNESTY AND A NEW PERSPECTIVE

SPEAKERS/ D & I

In this two-part series, we will be answering some of the key questions arising from the two cases currently being brought to the ICJ. What protection can international law offer here and what are the limitations of human rights law? How can the law be used to respond to the Gaza crisis, both bureaucratically and on the ground? We will be joined by several esteemed guests, who will be able to demystify the most important principles and takeaways from this case. The discussions will centre around the jeopardy that the result of the ICJ’s decision could place not only on the crisis in Gaza, but also on the entire discipline of international law: a vital topic that is necessary to address now more than ever. Should the current troubling events in Palestine and Israel or elsewhere affect you in any way, we implore you to reach out to your College Tutor, the dedicated Cambridge Nightline Service (01223 744444), or other sources of support such as Mind.org.uk, hubofhope.co.uk and the NHS. Panellists, + more to be confirmed: Professor Surabhi Ranganathan - Professor of IL at Cambridge, who has worked with the Supreme Court of India, the UN and UNICEF, and whose research on oceanic legalities extends into incredibly transformative commentary on current global issues with statehood and territory, decolonisation and the emergence of new legal forms/institutions Dr Tor Krever - Assistant Professor of IL at Cambridge, whose work has focused on modern anti-imperial resistance through world trade, humanitarian and human rights law: working with the UN, with the South African Constitutional Court and writing on the situation of Palestine Professor Ardi Imseis - member of the Palestinian legal team at the ICJ hearing for an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of the status in Palestine upon UN General Assembly request, as well as an experienced advocate in public international law and a voluminous writer on Palestine Dr Shahd Hammouri - Lecturer in IL at Kent, whose research has focused on the discourse of business and HR particularly in the context of war, and who sits on the Executive Committee at Lawyers for Palestinian HRs

Our Alumni Department will partner up mentors and mentees with similar interests who can help each other to grow and learn. We highly encourage you to be both a mentor and a mentee. If you are a 1st or 2nd year student, sign up to be mentored by a student in the year above. 3rd year students will be paired up with an Alumnus, and we may soon open this up to 2nd year students so stay tuned! Thanks to the success with this so far in Michaelmas, more socials will be planned for this term between you and your buddy! Details soon...

The De Smith Moot is an individual moot for those who already have prior mooting experience. It is the most advanced moot and is often considered the most prestigious moot run by CULS. The problems may be set on any core area of law (broadly defined). There are two rounds remaining in Lent term.

Family Law Speed Moot

The first family law-based moot run by CULS. Sponsored by St Mary’s Chambers who have written the material and will be sending multiple barristers to judge on the day. It is an individual moot which is accessible to those who have never studied family law. The final is open for anyone to watch, and there will be networking opportunities after the final.

Fledglings Finals

This Moot is an individual moot for beginners. Participants will not have had any prior mooting experience, making it perfect for freshers and non-law students. Moot problems are also only on first-year areas of law.

One Essex Court Moot

The finals wil be conducted in the Law Faculty and spectators are strongly welcomed to attend. Judged by OEC represenatatives, with networking afterwards.
