Dear members,

I hope you all have had a wonderful winter break and a great start to the term! I am extremely excited to share this term card with you. CULS has so much to be proud of (and to look forward to) as the CULS Committee 2022-23 enter their final term in tenure.

Last term, we hosted CULS' first in-person foreign exchange since pre-pandemic. This connected Cambridge students to students at the University of Malta. Our brand new Diversity & Inclusion Department truly made its mark on the society and has exciting events planned for this term. Our 121st Law Ball, hosted at the beautiful Madingley Hall, was filled with plenty of celebrations, dancing and fun, after what was an intense Michaelmas Term

As we enter into Lent Term, there is so much more to be excited about. We have exciting speaker events with guests including CULS' Honorary President and Former President of the Supreme Court Baroness Hale, Sir Nick Green, Chair of the Law Commission and more We also have exciting and diverse social and welfare events for members to get involved in. Our Careers Department have an array of events ranging from Citizens Advice, dispute resolution, student advice panels on tripos and applications, and more. Following on from the success of last term's Law Ball, CULS' Lent Gala committee are planning and organising our Annual Lent Gala and launch party, so keep an eye out for details to come.

We also have our Alumni Dinner coming up, where members can connect and learn from our alumni who have gone on to pursue a range of impressive careers, and where alumni can rekindle memories of being in Cambridge.

Furthermore, Lord Sales will be presenting awards to our members for their Pro Bono achievements at our Pro Bono awards We have also partnered up with the Oxford Law Society for our Varsity Dinner and Varsity Moot. There are so many more events and initiatives happening this term, and there simply isn't enough space for me to list them all on this welcome page, so please do have a read of the rest of this term card and get involved.

As I enter my final term as President, I would like to say a huge thank you to the CULS Committee It has been an absolute pleasure working with each and every one of you I am so proud of everything that CULS has achieved this year and these achievements would not have been possible without the committee's dedication to the society. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their generous support of our society and for contributing so much effort into supporting our members' journeys into the legal field Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank our members for all of your support, it has been a true honour to serve as your President for 2022-23.

BARONESS HALE

Brenda Hale, Baroness Hale of Richmond, studied Law at Girton College Cambridge. She then went on to become a judge in the Family Division of the High Court of Justice and was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1999 became only the second woman to be appointed to the Court of Appeal. In 2004, she joined the House of Lords as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, becoming the only woman to have been appointed to that position. In 2017, Baroness Hale was then appointed to serve as the President of the Supreme Court, becoming the first woman to serve in the role.

Baroness Hale has had significant influence in the development of English law across a wide range of areas, having an impact on the lives of millions of women, men and children. Baroness Hale has ruled on many cases which form the foundations of the law tripos here at Cambridge University. For example, she was instrumental in the ruling on whether the government had the power by itself to invoke Article 50 of the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty.

Baroness Hale also has been the Honorary President of the Cambridge University Law Society since 2015.

SIR NICK GREEN

Sir Green is the current Chair of the Law Commission for England and Wales. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1986. He was appointed a judge of the High Court of Justice (Queen's Bench Division) in 2013, and was then awarded the customary knighthood in the 2014 Special Honours. In 2018, he was promoted to the Court of Appeal and received the customary appointment to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom in the same year. As current Chair of the Law Commission, Sir Green will be discussing how the role of law reform has changed since the Commission’s inception, and the significance of its longevity despite significant challenges.

S P E A K E R S SHAUN WALLACE

Shaun Wallace was called to the bar in 1984. Although a criminal barrister by trade, he has also found fame as a successful quizzer, winning Mastermind in 2004 and featuring as a ‘chaser’, nicknamed the ‘The Dark Destroyer’, in the ITV quiz show The Chase. Shaun vocally supported the CBA’s industrial action last year, speaking on the picket line outside the Royal Courts of Justice.

Wallace is a part-time lecturer and visits schools, colleges and other institutions to educate students on aspects of law

ANNUAL DEBATE

CULS' Annual Debate 2023, will be centred on Human Rights, in particular the 'Bill of Rights' Bill.

Come and join us for what will be an incredibly interesting debate, with leading academics, Dr Stevie Martin and Dr Stephanie Palmer.

Dr Martin is a Lecturer in Public Law at the Law Faculty and a Fellow/ByeFellow at Fitzwilliam and King’s Colleges After qualifying as a lawyer in Australia, Stevie spent several years working as a legal associate in the Supreme Court of Queensland and the Family Court of Australia

SIn addition to presenting at international conferences on the topic of assisted suicide, Stevie has also published a number of articles on the topic and has written on medical law more generally, including medical treatment of children She is the one of the general editors of the European Human Rights Law Review and one of authors of Hughes, Martin, and Palmer, Human Rights Law (Forthcoming, Cambridge University Press 2023).

Dr Palmer lectures and supervises in Human Rights Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law and Medical Law and Life Sciences. She is currently supervising doctoral theses on a range of public law and human rights topics. She is a Fellow at Girton College where she is a Director of Studies and a barrister at Blackstone Chambers, London She is on the editorial board of the European Human Rights Law Review and was one of the first editors of the International Journal of Constitutional Law (I*CON). She is also a Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre and a member of the Centre for Public Law and the Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Science

Our Foreign Affairs Department are also seeking to expand CULS' network of partner universities to bring more opportunities for in-person and virtual exchanges to CULS members.
