FUNKY SUNGLASSES

Mirrorshades - Mirrored coating on surface. Used a lot by police officers in the US. They usually come in an aviator or wraparound shape. Aviators - Teardrop-shaped lens and thin metal frames. Often used by pilots, military personnel, and law enforcement personnel in the US. Good with any face shape, but best with an oval shape. Wayfarers/Spicolis - Popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Teashades - Popularized by John Lennon and Ozzy Osbourne. They’re not very effective at keeping light out of your eyes, though. Wraparounds - Associated with athletics and extreme sports. Oversized - Associated with models and movie stars. Glamorous, darling. vintage-sunglasses-shop.com

Sunglasses come in all shapes and sizes! Here are a few popular styles:

Choosing the lens color wisely The color of the lenses doesn’t just affect your fashion statement, it affects how well you detect contrast and differentiate colors. Some colors enhance contrast, which can be useful; however, this is often at the expense of color distinction, which can cause problems (when you’re driving, for example, and need to be able

to clearly differentiate the colors of a traffic light). Some sunglasses even come with interchangeable lenses so you can change the color easily, dependinon what you’re doing. Grey lenses reduce light intensity without affect contrast or distorting colors. Brown lenses partially enhance contrast by blocking some blue light. Good for snow sports. Also generally good for hunting in bright light, against open backgrounds. Amber/yellow lenses significantly enhance contrast because they block most or all blue light, and that makes them popular among hunters who benefit from that contrast when looking at targets against the sky. They’re bad, however, for any activity that requires color recognition (like driving!). Good for snow sports. Red/orange lenses are good for snow sports but only on overcast days. If you’re a hunter, orange lenses are good for clay targets against open backgrounds. Violet lenses are good for hunters who need to see clay targets on a green background. Copper sunglasses will mute the sky and grass against a golf ball. Blue and green sunglasses enhance contrast with a yellow tennis ball.

CHILL OUT IN YOUR VINTAGE CAR

...Because they are timeless classics. New cars do not compare in comfort to a 50’s car. Here are a list of reasons to prefer old cars and look so cool in them.

A

vintage car is, in the most general sense, an old automobile, and in the narrower senses of car enthusiasts and collectors, it is a car from the period of 1919 to 1930. Such enthusiasts have categorization schemes for ages of cars that enforce distinctions between antique cars, vintage cars, classic cars, and so on. The classification criteria vary, but consensus within any country is often maintained by major car clubs. The vintage era in the automotive world was a time of transition. The car started off in 1919 as still something of a rarity, and ended up, in 1930, well on the way towards ubiquity. In fact, automobile production at the end of this period was not matched again until the 1950s. In the intervening years, most industrialized states built nationwide road systems with the result that, towards the end of the period, the ability to negotiate unpaved roads

was no longer a prime consideration of automotive design. In today’s terms, a vintage car is defined the same as a classic. Cars became much more practical, convenient and comfortable during this period. Car heating was introduced, as was the in-car radio. Four-wheel braking from a common foot pedal was introduced, as was the use of hy-

draulically actuated brakes.Power steering was also an innovation of this era. Towards the end of the vintage era, the system of octane rating of fuel was introduced, allowing comparison between fuels. In 1923 the gasoline additive Ethyl made its debut at the Indy 500 that resulted in a boost in octane from the 50’s to the 80’s[2] In the United States drive-in restaurants were introduced as well as suburban shopping centers and motels. The stock market crash of 1929 started the layoff of automotive workers and many new companies went bankrupt but over two million cars were still produced in 1929 and 1930.ratio Earle, known as the «Father of good roads» had proposed the government create an Interstate highway system in 1902 and in 1909 built the World’s first mile of concrete road on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.

The style of the Swinging Twenties can easily be defined in the Art Deco artwork that was produced throughout the decade – the simplicity of geometric shapes, straight lines and sharp edges. Puppy owners will love this Art Deco inspired print with the phrase “Love me, love my dog.” Red Gate Arts on Etsy, $20.

Reflective furniture was all the rage in the ‘20s, and it wasn’t rare to see mirrored tables and chests in the homes of high society like Jay Gatsby. Create an elegant and stylish boudoir with Hollywood flair by adding a mirrored chest to each side of your bed. Ethan Allen, $1,190.

The early Hollywood influence on the ‘20s is evident in the popularity of shiny, luxe fabrics like silks and satins. This metallic throw pillow from West Elm is the perfect addition to give any room a touch of old Hollywood glam. West Elm, $30.

Falling in line with the shiny fabrics, glossy paints and reflective surfaces of the period is the popularity of polished metals. Adding this fabulous set of 1920s standing binoculars to your living space is a unique way to pay homage to the Gatsby era and create masculine chic decor. Restoration Hardware, $2,495.

Nothing has the ability to add more glitz and glam to a room than a few stunning chandeliers, and this unique ‘20s-inspired version will cast a glittery glow from wall-towall. Restoration Hardware, $1,795.

The world’s final view of Hepburn was in 1992 TV newscasts of her visit to Africa last October - three months before her death at 63 - as she bestowed first her compassion on starving children and then her modulated anger at the causes of their condition. In the 40 years between Hollywood’s make-believe headlines and the horrifying reality of Somalia, Hepburn as actress and woman seemed an emissary from a finer world than ours. The selected jazz tunes also add an acoustic dimension into the world of the electro. Elements from older tunes are integrated to the booming electronic music genre. It may also distort the original phrasing and spontaneity of the notes played by the jazz musicians The recent popularity of electro-swing seems to reflect a broader trend for vintage fashion and customs, and the burlesque revival. Video clips often feature black and white film extracts from the 1930’s and 1940’s, such as in “Bad boy good man” from Tape Five, which shows dancers and musicians playing during the Swing era.

However, although electro-swing brings together different generations of people and seem to be reducing the cultural clash between acoustic jazz and current electronic music, it faces severe critics from so-called ‘true jazz lovers” and swing dancers themsel-

What is more, the electro-swing music genre is a hybrid between different cultures. As a matter of fact, it has both American and European influences. Although its roots are American, it is predominantly popular in Europe. Parov Stelar, who set the standard for today’s mashup now called electroswing is Austrian (his real name is Marcus Fürede) ; Caravan Palace is a French band ; Tape Five is a musical project born in Germany ; Caro Emerald is from the Netherlands.

Electro-swing is also a union of two music eras separated by more than 70 years. Combining jazz elements with electronic dance music, this music genre is a revival of sounds from the Swing Era (that is to say, American jazz music from the 1920’s to the 1940’s). Songs of the big stars of the past era, like Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald, the Andrew Sisters and Artie Shaw are remixed by the stars of the electro jazz scene. Jazz standards are re-used, as in the song “My Baby’s Crazy About Me” by G-swing, named after a popular jazz tune that was often played by famous musicians like Louis Armstrong. Electro swing thus enables a music that has in many ways become archaic to be revitalized with a refined sound quality and a contemporary set of backing beats.
