That Girl, Spring Issue

This might seem at odds with the fashion industry, whose profits depend on embracing the new. (To quote Chanel, a dress ‘is a charming and ephemeral creation, not an everlasting work of art. Fashion should die and die quickly, in order that commerce may survive... The more transient fashion is, the more perfect it is. You can’t protect what is already dead.’) And yet, when you consider the clothes that never date – Chanel’s little black dress from the Twenties; Dior’s New Look tailoring of the late Forties; Pucci’s vivid Fifties prints; Saint Laurent’s Sixties tuxedo suits – it becomes apparent that fashion can be more enduring than its practitioners might have us believe. This has prompted some designers to differentiate between fashion and style (‘Fashions fade, style is eternal,’ according to Yves Saint Laurent); but whatever one’s chosen definition of timeless beauty, I hope that this edition of That Girl will inspire you as much as it has inspired us. Whether you start with our cover story on Miranda Kerr for the H&M, there is a glorious variety of writing, art and photography in the following pages.

What’s new ?

ALEXANDER WANG X H&M H&M has announced that its next designer collaboration will be with Alexander Wang. The announcement was made on April, 12th, during an event at the Coachella Music Festival in Palm Springs, US.

APR 13, 2014 - The secret is finally out. During a party at the Coachella Music Festival in Palm Springs, US, H&M announced that their next designer collaboration will be with Alexander Wang. On November 6 this year, it is time to sharpen your elbows and put your game face on, as the Alexander Wang x H&M Collection will hit around 250 stores worldwide and online.

“I am honoured to be a part of H&M’s designer collaborations. The work with their team is an exciting, fun process. They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity. This will be a great way for a wider audience to experience elements of the Alexander Wang brand and lifestyle,” Alexander Wang said. This is the first time that an American designer teams up with H&M, and the Alexander Wang x H&M collection will feature apparel and accessories for both men and women. The New York based fashion designer’s eponymous brand has firmly established itself by perpetually evolving and re-contextualising the urban uniform, since it was launched on the runway in 2007. Alexander Wang’s core sensibility is a reflection on contrasts, blending seamlessly between the refined and the imperfect. His collections have an unprecious outlook on fashion, and always reflect a sense of ease. November 6, please come soon.

Actress Lupita Nyong’o is PEOPLE’s Most Beautiful She may have won an Oscar for her role as the slave Patsey in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave and recently landed a contract with Lancôme Paris, but Lupita Nyong’o «never dreamed» she would be touted as «Most Beautiful» for all the world to see. «It was exciting and just a major, major compliment,» the 31-yearold says of gracing this year’s cover. And especially, «I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [it] and feel a little more seen.» Born in Mexico and raised in Kenya, Nyong’o first equated beauty with what she saw on television: «Light skin and long, flowing, straight hair,» she says. «Subconsciously you start to appreciate those things more than what you possess.» Her mother, Dorothy, who is the managing director and head of PR for the Africa Cancer Foundation, «always said I was beautiful,» Nyong’o adds. «And I finally believed her at some point.» As a teen, Nyong’o dyed her hair every color – except blonde – and even went as far as shaving her head bald. «It was very strange and very cold!» she says, laughing. «It was scary but I like to dare myself.» Now she says the best compliments are «when I have been called beautiful with not one drop of makeup on,» she adds. «And also before I comb my hair or put on a pretty dress. Happiness is the most important thing.» That Girl - Spring 2014

dĂŠfilĂŠ chanel NEVER have so many women been so delighted to walk into a grocery store. Well, a Chanel Shopping Centre to be exact. On the morning of the 5th April, at god only knows what cost, Karl Lagerfeld had magically transformed the Grand Palais into a full-scale supermarket - his shelf stackers must have been working all night. By Sarah Harris

as Karl Lagerfeld ever set foot in a supermarket? Can we just take a moment to picture this: Karl wheeling a shopping trolley; Karl weighing his fruit and veg; Karl having a chat to the lady behind the checkout about the weather. The answer is, of course, emphatically ‘no’. The normal, mundane and everyday is not for the likes of Mr Lagerfeld, but this didn’t stop him transforming the Grand Palais into the greatest supermarket on earth. He must have sent special Chanel spies on a mission to find out what goes on in a supermarket, how these aisle thingies work, what to do with a trolley, what a basket should look like – he couldn’t help draping his with silver chains and Chanel logos. This has got to be Lagerfeld’s most adventurous and spectacular show project to date, a life-size supermarket where aisle upon aisle and shelf upon shelf was stacked to the gills with Chanel product. Move over Monoprix! Make way for The Chanel SUPER Marche! This was awesomely extravagant, the most extreme expression of super-consumption from the world’s most consumed luxury brand: A whole aisle of Chanel teas (‘Little Black Tea’, ‘Very Early Grey’), a cheese stall (giant wheels of parmesan), vegetables, dairy products, mountains of tins of caviar, coconuts (‘Lait de Coco’), packets of Chanel toast stamped with the interlocking CC logo, wines, spirits, olive oil. There was even a hardware store featuring Chanel rubber gloves (labeled ‘So Chic’), Chanel doormats (‘Mademoiselle Prive’), Chanel feather dusters and, yes, a Chanel chainsaw too. The British press was seated in front of a display of tissues and cotton wool balls to watch the hip hypermarche spring to life. And the clothes? Like the supermarket, they summed up fast fashion in the most luxurious way possible: Speedy, sporty, streety and special.

Cara Delevingne stepped out in a cropped bubblegum pink sweater and knit leggings, slashed with holes, a Chanel bag chain around her bare midriff, metallic trainers on her feet, a big tweed coat and her hair in ragga-girl plaits and dreads festooned with scraps of fabric. Genius!

and carrying a Chanel shopping basket made from Chanel bag chains. Brilliant! Kirsten Owen wore a wadded tweed coat and a giant padlock around her neck. Awesome! A couple of uber chic shoppers, playing ‘man and wife’ entered: she wore classic pink Chanel with pearls and trainer-cum-snow boots that laced to the knee and he wore a black suit and carried about 20 Chanel shopping bags. Hilarious! At the end of the show, a voice over the tannoy said: ‘Dear valued customer, the Chanel store is now closing. Please feel free to pick up your complimentary fruit and vegetables as you leave’ – words that have never before been uttered at a fashion show. Typically however, the desire to smash and grab was too much for some who tried to make off with packages of tea, hidden under their coats.

Feature It was impossible to speak to the man behind it all, swamped as he was with well wishers and the ever-present Rihanna and her crew of bodyguards. But given the chance, to ask one question it would have been this: ‘Karl, have you ever set foot in a supermarket?’ To which he would have most certainly replied. ‘Only this one.’ And you may wonder what happened to all the food…

The guests looted part of the stage and took home some of the Chanel goods, which regardless of taste will definitely be valuable memorabilia! Singer Rihanna, model Joan Smalls and Delevingne were all seen playing around together after the show. For the rest of the packaging, Karl Lagerfeld explains they would be used in the Chanel stores windows, and underligned that the boxes were empty. As for vegetables, fruits and candies, they were offered to guestes and the rest was given to charitable organizations.

Kendall Jenner

The entire family wasn’t able to make it to the City of Light to see Kendall’s Chanel debut in person, but as big sis Kim Kardashian explained, they «all set alarms to watch online!» «This is unreal,» she wrote, Instagramming a glam pic of Kendall on the runway. Khloé Kardashian was also super proud of her «baby girl walking in the Chanel Paris fashion show» and Instagrammed a split showing different angles of Kendall’s look. Of course, momager Kris Jenner was thrilled as well. She Instagrammed a shot of Kendall, Joan Smalls and Cara Delevingne (who at one point walked the runway at one point hand-in-hand with designer Karl Lagerfeld) in the show, calling the ladies «fabulous» and adding a #soproud hashtag. Rihanna was also part of the Chanel show. Kanye West is a big supporter of Kendall, too! He was front row as she worked the runway at Givenchy’s Paris Fashion Week show on Sunday. Kim, who was watching the show from home, gushed that the «Best part was my baby watching & cheering on my baby sister!!!» Too sweet! That Girl - Spring 2014

You got hair, here are some styles

Start planning your new season makeover now - with some help from our guide to spring/summer ‘14’s biggest hair trends. By REBECCA COX

Chanel has completely recreated the bob. Cutting completely around the face with the fringe , but the «hide» with the roundness spikes. The result is original and chic. Certainly, here is a wig, but the whole is totally suitable for our real hair. The opinion of the pro Jerome Guézou : « The bob is much less degraded than what is currently For me, it is very beautiful square, trendy I love this very modern and at the same time . . . it changes . I would like to see more often, even if it is not cutting the most requested yet . But I think it will come. «To get to her hairdresser : «We must request a full square , helmet type , with bangs or wick For runout on the sides to Farrah Fawcett, is blowdried with a paddle brush and put a product. Small texturizing concern . cutting this kind does not go to everyone must already be very lookée this will go much better for elongated faces». Every once in a while, it’s cool to be crafty with your hairstyle. Look around your house and you might discover a multitude of items that can be hacked into hair accessories, like with this truly inventive style from the Chanel fall 2014 presentation. Love it or loathe it, it’s a whole lotta look, ladies — one powerful enough to have the fashion and beauty departments around the world talking about it. The question isn’t necessarily what’s in this textured ponytail as much as what isn’t. Hair stylist Sam McKnight even explained how he got the look in one of his own shots. «I exaggerated a simple pony and blew it up in proportion and detail, incorporating crimped extensions, braided hair in multicoloured Chanel tweed rags, lace and pearls,» he says. «I used fudge salt spray then Oribe texturiser to create a dry volume which was then crimped randomly, woven and braided with the Chanel fabrics, and fastened at the base with one of the woven braids.» That Girl - Spring 2014

Zoom on cucumber and pomagranate HOW TO: MAKE YOUR OWN ALLNATURAL FACE MASKS, FOOT SCRUBS & SEA SALT SPRAY

You don’t need to just rely on your bathroom for skincare products – your kitchen is full of them too! Keep reading for beauty products which are lurking undiscovered in your store cupboard or fridge… Sea Salt Spray:

If you’ve got wavy hair then you don’t need to go to the beach to make it look like you’ve been swimming in the sea. Make your own sea spray and then let your hair dry naturally for enviable waves. To make the spray, mix 1 cup of warm water with 1tbsp sea salt, 1 tsp coconut oil and 1 tsp hair gel, then mix well and spray generously.

Avocado Masks:

An avocado face mask is perfect for dry skin AND for blemishes. To make 3-4 masks, mix 1 ripe avocado with 2 tbsp honey, 80ml plain yoghurt and 1 tsp lemon juice. Apply a thick layer to your skin and leave for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Store in an air tight container and use within 7 days. That Girl - Spring 2014

13

Beauty tips Olive Oil Hair Mask:

Rubbing something greasy in to your hair may feel odd, but you’ll reap the benefits of soft, shiny hair if you can get past the initial stage! Mix 125g of honey with 50ml of olive oil and (if you like) heat it a little. Work a small amount of it through damp hair with your fingers from roots to ends. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave for as long as you can – at least half an hour! Shampoo well, condition and dry leaving your hair incredibly soft and shiny!

Baking Soda Face Mask:

This DIY face mask is great for skin suffering from breakouts. Mix 2 tbsp baking soda with 2 tsp of water and massage over your skin. Leave to dry for 15-20 minutes before washing off with warm water. Apply moisturiser when your face is dry.

You’ve probably seen cucumber slices being used over the eyes before, but skincare fiend Grace explains why you shouldn’t restrict the humble cucumber fruit (that’s right, fruit!) to just your peepers:

It’s Good For Coconut Oil / Oil Pul- What Cucumber is often found in products that promise to refine and brighten ling: lacklustre skin – it has the wonderful ability to revitalise complexions and tone If Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t put coconut oil on your radar then I don’t know what will! The actress mentioned in an interview with E! that she’s been trying oil pulling. She explained that it’s “when you swish coconut oil around [in your mouth] for 20 minutes – it’s supposed to be great for oral health and making your teeth white. It’s supposed to clear up your skin, as well.”

open pores. Renowned for its ability to reduce puffy eyes – hence its typical use – cucumbers are high in ascorbic and affeic acid, which decrease water retention and in turn diminish swelling and puffiness. Plus, high levels of natural antioxidants and silica have been proven to rejuvenate skin and fade dark circles – ideal if you suffer with hayfever, a cold or sensitive skin around your eyes. Other uses include its ability to deeply hydrate the skin – it’s made up of 95% water, after all – with vitamin E and potassium to help plump fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also great for soothing sunburn and can help speed up the skin’s natural healing process.

Lemon & Sugar Foot Scrub:

Along with organic cucumber, the Yes To Cucumber Wipes harness calming aloe vera and green tea’s dual antioxidant and astringent properties to help ease troubled skin and prevent unexpected breakouts. The 98% natural formula contains zero alcohol, so won’t strip the skin of natural oils – keeping things fresh, moisturised and balanced. The handy packs are perfect for on-the-go freshening up or post-gym/yoga activities! The Yes To Cucumber Calming Shower Gel is a fab all-rounder, but perfect for those struggling to find body washes gentle enough for sensitive, dry skin. Also great for taking on hols, as the cooling formula will soothe any possible sunburn or just hot skin. Oh, and did I mention it can help tackle and tone cellulite dimples too?

Prepare your feet for sandal season (it’s so close!) with an easy lemon foot scrub. Mix 500g of sugar with 250ml of olive oil and stir well until combined. Then, mix in 4 tbsp of lemon juice – either freshly squeezed or from a bottle. Voila! It’s ready to use or transfer to jars and give to friends and family as gifts!

How to Use Pomegranates: Much to my delight, pomegranates are currently in season, and you won’t want to miss the opportunity to incorporate these sweet, tangy fruits into your winter recipes. In addition to being gorgeous to look at, these superfruits can keep you feeling good. Lauded the world over for their medical benefits, pomegranates pack antioxidants that help keep blood pressure and cholesterol at healthy levels. A handful of pom seeds alone make for a great snack or salad topper, and it’s never a bad idea to juice the tasty seeds. (Just be careful when juicing, as pomegranate stains don’t come out in the wash! Read up on how safely de-seed them here.) Without further ado, here some of my favorite ways to enjoy pomegranates:

Recipe for Homemade Pomegranate peel off mask: What you need: 1/2 cup fresh pomegranate juice 1 pouch gelatin Step 1: Blend about 1 cup of fresh pomegranate seeds in a blender, sieve the juice, discard the pulp.

Breakfast

Step 2: Add gelatin and stir. Microwave for 15 seconds until completely dissolved.

Dinnertime

Step 3: Refrigerate for 15 minutes until cool. Don’t refrigerate any longer, else it will become hardened jello.

Mix seeds into your plain or vanilla yogurt, work into a fruit reduction for your pancake drizzle, or give your granola a little pizzazz. Toss into an almond pilaf instead of dried cranberries, or use as a bright sauce for your pork chops.

Cocktail Hour

For a simple and clean with a touch of sweet, muddle a handful of seeds and add to a dry Vodka martini. Or, put a spin on your go-to cocktail by swapping out cranberry juice for a delightful Vodka Pom.

That Girl - Spring 2014

Your peel of mask is ready. Simply apply a thin layer of the mask all over your face, wait for it to dry and peel off. Your skin will feel dewy soft, pores will diminish, enabling a refreshing, glowing look to your face.

See the world on the cheap with these awesome travel tips One of the best things about college (or just-out-of-college) life is the dedicated periods of time (spring break, what?!) where you can jet off without worrying about how many vacation days you have left this year. The flip-side to having the time is maybe not having the money to take your dream trip...or is it?

By Elizabeth Kiefer.

Tips once you’re there Just because you’re traveling on the cheap doesn’t mean you can’t have the kind of adventure you’ve always craved, so we pulled together our best tips for traveling on a shoestring. Keep reading, and then get going!

Mexco

which is about eight weeks before you leave your ticket during the pricing sweet spot, which is about eight weeks before you intend to leave. Other tools for helping you find cheap flights include Hipmunk and BootsnAll. You can also start by looking at package tour pricing. Going with a group is a good way to save money, even if you’re alone in a sea of cool traveling strangers; we’re especially partial to Trip Tribe and TravelZoo. Many packages include flights, lodging, entry to different sites and museums, and even yourmeals at a majorly discounted

price. And yes, a little bit of autonomy is certainly worth its weight in peace of mind.

Now,

where

you go?

should

This is the fun part! Start out by scanning sites like WikiTravel, apps like Afar, and Pinterest’s travel pins for some serious inspiration. It’s important to keep in mind that if you’re planning a longer trip, there are lots of easy and inexpensive travel options to get you from place to place once you’re out of the U.S. Head to Seat61 for train and ferry tips and look into regional budget airlines like AirAsia or Europe’s EasyJet. OK, but where to?! Our favorite wallet-friendly regions are here!

Pack wisely!

Work out your budget

we know: Tour travel doesn’t have the same surface cool level as flying solo. But another advantage of going Let’s face it: Inexpensive means diffe- with a group (especially to a foreign rent things for different people. Your place where you may not speak the best bet is to identify what it is about language) is safety. Sacrificing just your ideal trip that most excites you, figure out what you can realistically spend, and go from there. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation but can’t afford to make it all the way to Maldives, start checking flights for Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, or Tulum, and set up price alerts on Kayak to track fares. If you’re not set on exactly what kind of trip you want, let the cheapest fare be your guide—the most expensive part of travel is often getting to your destination in the first place. Another hint? Book your ticket during the pricing sweet spot, That Girl - Spring 2014

Don’t plan on getting toiletries, socks, and all those little-but-important things you need once you’ve reached your destination. Stocking up at home is a good way to avoid the traveler tax (that is, the cost you pay for being a foreigner who doesn’t know how to find deals!). In general, a smaller bag is better, because lugging a huge piece of luggage around (obviously) sucks, as do baggage fees. Some items you may not think to bring but should? A reusable water bottle, band-aids, dry shampoo, shower flip-flops, a small bag for day Thailand

trips, a roll-up rain jacket, and ear plugs. Also make sure you have outlet adapters! Depending on your particular trip, you may also want Cipro (a strong antibiotic you can take when street food gets the best of you), a roll of duct tape (you never know!), and small plastic baggies for wet clothes. Another pro tip: Leave a little room in your bag for whatever you may buy when you’re away!

And be smart once you get there. The best way to save money is to book lodging in advance and have a transportation plan in place before you leave. If you don’t, you’ll probably end up incurring unexpected expenses. That said, sometimes you just can’t account for everything! If you find yourself in a new place with nowhere to stay, don’t check into the nearest hotel. Click on over to HostelWorld and always keep the Airbnb app open! Another thing to note, especially when you’re traveling abroad: Always

18

split up your money, and never put it in your back pocket. Keeping cash in separate spots can save you from losing it all in one go—a financial misfortune that could actually ruin your entire trip. Same goes for documents: Make copies of your passport and plane tickets, and keep them in different places than the originals. The cost of getting new ones (particularly on a limited timetable, across the ocean) is one you most definitely want to avoid.

That Girl - Spring 2014

Stick to your budget, but also give yourself a break now and then! You never know when you’re going to get back to where you are, so buy that knick-knack, take that boat tour, and visit that museum. Traveling cheap isn’t about having regrets about what you didn’t do—it’s about being thoughtful with your money so you can do what you want!
