SCHOOL OF APPLIED ARTS OUTSIDE-IN DESIGN Location: Vietnam National University - University village Linh Trung Ward, Thu Duc District, Ho Chi Minh City Date: undergraduate final project - January to July 2014 Instructor: Mr. Cuong Pham, M.Arch - Dean of Arch. Dept. Bringing students community activities, instructional facilities and administrative offices to one location, the School of Applied Arts condenses the diversity of a college campus into a natural and tranquil site. Following the planning, the school is an integral part of National University which is the largest polytechnic institution in southern Vietnam, 20 kilometers away from the city center and has more than 50,000 students. Regarding the fudamental conceptual formation, firstly, a wide and strong flow of movement is digged from south towards the lake in the north
which is the very heart of the site’s natural scenery. As a result two proportional wings are formed: one for public and another for professional [1]. Secondly, as the sun dominant radiation affects mainly on the east and west side of the triangle site, every cluster of buildings positions along the east-west to minimize direct heat and glare penetration [2]. Thirdly, an interplay of volumes and voids is applied that 5 voids cut into 2 solid masses to weave relationships between pulic and academic zones, outer and inner spaces, and active and quiet zones [4]. Among these open spaces, a main entrance frames a dynamic core and creates a flexible outdoor room defining multi-level terraces and active interstitial spaces that foster informal social acitivity and creative cross pollination [5]. Furthermore, it also acts as a compass in circulation determination to grand hall, faculty offices, library, classrooms and workshops [6].

The oval three-story grandhall and library on the left are semi-public destinations with easy access and a cafeteria corridor between them acting as a buffer zone. While on the right, the smoothly feather-shaped building runs all academic duties with the administrative offices lying right after the main gate to directly welcome and assist all students and guests. The studios and workshops embrace a small atrium to stimulate natural ventilation and daylight. Each stripe represents a faculty and they all have mutual interaction.

2. Parametric sunshade fins of professional studio building
Responding to local weather conditions and building orientation, a tensible membrance roofing links the grand hall and academic block and protects the main entrance during sunny and rainy days [1]. Besides, an automated sunshade system in the north opens and closes vertical fins outside the high performance glass curtain wall to minimize heat gain while maximizing daylight and views to the lake and nature [2]. Consequently, the calculation forms a parametric language for the exterior skin which also demonstrates the dynamic and intensive environment in the workshops inside. Along the circulation, there are also additional spaces for periodic or temporary exhibitions and events [3]

Testing material for membrance. The choice of transluent and light perforated materials 7. Smoothly curved mass with graded roof to allow natural ventilation
Home-based studio requires 7 specific spatial criteria to be effective and creative: individual learning, presentation space, active-wet area, display and resourses, collaboration, specialised laboratory and breakout corners. The flexible multi-module learning setting could be recollocated to allow students to move around to suit particular learning tasks. This concept also scatters across the school, in corridors, verandahs, cafeteria and library to foster not only discipline-based but also interdisciplinary learning and social skills. Initially, the model was also separated in two wings and spread out towards the lake. However, regarding the conservation of natural scenery, the masses became more compact and was moved backwards, close to the main streets to enhance accessibility. Besides, the choice of material for the membrance can also reduce the heat from the large yard.
THU THIEM SOUTHERN DELTA RESEARCH CENTER SUSTAINIBLE DESIGN Location: Thu Thiem Peninsula, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City Date: Competition - Sep to Oct 2013 Team: 5 students, instructor Ninh Viet Anh - M.Arch The Thu Thiem New Urban Area is located on the east of the Saigon River, facing District 1. The Thu Thiem is designed as a new sustainable city in harmony with the natural landscapes. Due to low lying geography Vietnam is one of the countries in the world most at risk from flooding as a result of thermal expansion of the oceans due to human influenced climate change. Therefore, the design is to take full consideration of the specific climate of the city to develop a solution that sustainably provides a comfortable environment for those people using the building and the spaces around it. The project is located in a zone of enhanced mangrove landscape, dredge and cleaned waterway and gathers individuals or self-help groups of people who wish to contribute their enthusiasm to the national sustainibiltiy.

This research center can be launched as nonprofit and financially depend on its farming and donation. During the competition, students of architecture, structural engineer, civil engineer and urban planning contribute and debate to make the most feasable solution. Regarding the architecturally critical thinking, the ellipse mass represents a traditional community house in the countryside where holds abundant activities and still assures the quality of natural ventilation, lighting and friendly-environmental materials such as coconut leaves, clay and mud, straw and bamboo. In the courtyard of the building, there is a big pond to store fresh water in dry seasons. The masses undergo tests on Vasari and Flow Design to set appropriate orientations [1]. Refer to structural analysis, elevating buildings on piles will allow floodwaters to pass underneath the buildings without causing structural damage.
The height of piles are estimated by the periodic rising and receding of tide water of the Saigon River [2 & 3]. 1. Researching and observing cabins with photovoltaic cells 2. Building Plan - Vasari test with 2 main breezes: south west and south east wind 3. Section 1 - The lowest water receding 4. Section 2 - The highest water rising

MUNICIPAL MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS ARCHITECTURE DIALOGUE Location: intersection of Dong Khoi and Nguyen Du Street, Ward Ben Nghe, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City Date: undergraduate project - March 2013 Instructor: Prof. Le Thanh Son - Dean of Interior Design Department, Ph.D The site is located in the very heart of the city - District 1 which is the 200 year-old financial, commercial and cultural hub of Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, the architectural language of the municipal
museum must have been appropriately influenced by either the surrounding historic buildings or the modern trends. The cubistic mass is inspired by neo-corbusianism and material pattern style of famous architect Richard Meier. Repetitive openings reserve the calmness and tranquility of the building from elevation views, on the other hand, the top-lit upside down conical core plays a distinctive role in the interior display. Indispensably, the architecture chronicle is represented from the bottom to the top layer of the museum.

HO TRAM GOLF COURSE VILLA EMERGENCE FROM THE SAND Location: Phuoc Thuan Commune, Xuyen Moc District, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, Vietnam Client: Asian Coast Development Ltd (Canada) Date: DWP project - August 2015 to August 2016 Team: Senior architect Christopher Ingram and Assosiate Design Director Andy Mai Inspired by the geometry of a seashell - an intimately familiar icon of the coast, the actual roof geometry responses to any load outside by redirecting forces within a very thin section of shell structure along its natural multiple curvatures. Furthermore, as the way of respecting the landscapes, the sandy curved roof and the idea of tucking the building into the landscape were drivers of the concept from the beginning. The villas become almost invisible being an integral part of Mother Nature and this beautiful golf course. Villa 31 - North east perspection

VIET CAPITAL CENTER LEED GOLD AND BIM MANAGEMENT Location: 3A Ton Duc Thang Street, Ward Ben Nghe, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City Date: DWP project - March 2015 to August 2016 Team: Senior architect Phuong Le, Don Mcintyre and Associate Design Director Andy Mai Viet Capital Center is designed to be a high quality prestigious and iconic development and shall be considered as one of the top buildings in HCMC. The tower is a mixed-use tower. Our team assess the options to maximize the number of apartments (and in particular the living rooms and master bedrooms within the apartments) with uninterrupted views to pleasurable elements of the city such as the river, the skyline of the central business district, especially the iconic city elements, areas of natural beauty and exciting urban arteries. There is sensitivity to avoiding placing utilitarian elements of the building in areas that afford prime vistas into and out of the project.

In term of the concept, the hotel is composed of two slender boutique residential towers reflecting Vietnam colonial architecture, and bridged by a tranparent and contrast canal. The building forms a literal and figurative bridge over an entry court inspired by a ‘complete street’ landscape methodology. Internally, the residential spaces are open and transparent with ample natural light. 1. View from Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street (North) 2. View from Ngo Thoi Nhiem Street (South west) 3.
