FGP: What sets DC Ranch apart from other residential golf communities? I’ve always appreciated the beauty and sanctuary that DC Ranch provides. But, never more than this year. As we’ve all looked for ways to deal with a global pandemic, the ability to be outside on the13 miles of hiking and biking paths and on a world class golf course, has been a true blessing. During an era when we’ve spent extra time at home it makes a difference to be surrounded by mountains, with sunshine and blue skies above, to boost our spirits. And perhaps most importantly, to feel the sense of community that exists within DC Ranch. FGP: Why should buyers put DC Ranch at the top of their list? As always, location matters. And whether buyers are relocating from within the Valley or from other states or countries, DC Ranch, located in the heart of the coveted 85255 zip code, is very desirable. From a practical point of view, DC Ranch has all the everyday conveniences nearby. There are three commercial centers: Market Street, DC Ranch Crossings and Canyon Village, which all provide residents with services, shopping and plenty of outdoor dining. Families appreciate the excellent Copper Ridge Elementary and Middle School located in the community. And with easy access to the freeway, the airport and other parts of the Valley are easily accessible. FGP: Fill in the blank. DC Ranch is the best fit for…? There is truly something for everyone in DC Ranch. It is a beautifully planned, 4,000-acre, multigenerational community. With the majestic McDowell Mountains as backdrop, there are family-friendly community centers with pools and fitness facilities, sport and tennis courts, dozens of trails, children’s playgrounds and so many ways to create and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. There is also a private club for those interested in the country club environment. And within minutes, you’ll find world-class restaurants, shopping and other entertainment options. FGP: Tell us more about the Country Club at DC Ranch. The Club is all about celebrating friends and families and welcoming newcomers in a truly distinctive setting. Playing golf on the Club’s classic course designed by Tom
Lehman and John Fought means you will be surrounded by fabulous views and enjoy a challenging round, no matter what your level of play. As a club champion and former touring professional, I can attest that the course length, deep bunkers and undulating greens provide more than enough to maintain the accomplished player’s interest. At the same time, it’s welcoming for all skill levels and juniors are always encouraged! The club recently debuted The Horseshoe, a nine-hole, short course, perfect for a relaxing, quick round of golf. It is approachable and a great option for beginners, wine and dines, family golf, lesson play and those who don’t always have time for a longer match . Off the links, members enjoy time around the pool, on the courts and during the best of times, a compelling number of social events as well as plenty of outdoor dining spaces in which to enjoy our fabulous weather. FGP: What types of homes are within the community? The beauty of DC Ranch is it has something for every lifestyle. Homes range from one-bedroom condos to large custom estate homes and everything in between – all of which blend seamlessly into the Sonoran Desert. There are a variety of home styles and diverse neighborhoods, each with a different feel. The smaller lots have park frontage to encourage front porch living, while the larger acre-plus lots appeal to those seeking a custom estate. FGP: You clearly have a passion for your work and the community you represent. How did that develop? I do! As someone from Scotland who has traveled internationally and visited many residential communities all over the world, it’s a dream come true to work in DC Ranch and be a part of the developer’s vision of a multigenerational community. I have many friends and clients whose children ride their bikes to visit grandparents within the community. And this year, that has been more important than ever. I work with so many folks, whether upsizing or downsizing, who choose to stay here. For me, that is the ultimate testament to the success of the community. I consider myself truly blessed to represent clients here. For more information on DC Ranch homes: contact Allan MacDonald at 480.220.9724 or allan@foreazhomes.com.

THIS WAY TO JACK’S
T
New gastropub is Desert Highlands’ nod to history
he anticipation – like waiting for ketchup to pour from the bottle – builds. Just inside the entrance to the luxury community at Desert Highlands, directional signs offer a teasing appetizer for the most discriminating palate: racquet club this way, fitness center that way, putting course turn left, clubhouse and championship golf straight ahead. But, like the TV ad for Miracle Copper Anti-Fatigue Compression socks, there’s more. Missing: mention of the pool that invites invigorating lap-swims or simple relaxation. Absent: three-plus miles of walking paths and a beautifully landscaped fishing lake. No room on the sign for the dog park with “Yappy Hours.” And just not enough time to include two brand-spanking new pickleball courts.
28
| FI NEST G OLF P ROP E RT Y
Maybe the sign should simply read: “Welcome to Desert Highlands, a luxury private community where every day is a gift shared among friends.” And, seemingly, every day just gets better. A new way-finding marker could read: “Jack’s. Mingle, eat, drink. Straight ahead.” Jack’s is the latest innovation at a place that oozes a history of rich and neighborly lifestyle and wellness opportunities. Jack’s is the bigger, greater atmospheric wrinkle in a close-knit community fabric woven from the jaw-dropping Sonoran Desert landscape surrounding dramatic 3,100-foot elevation Pinnacle Peak.
“high standards … are the trademark of this incredible community and its worldclass facilities” E RI K P E T E RSO N ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER
A
gastropub that feels like a London-ish forerunner, with a nod to the community’s famed southwestern setting, Jack’s pays fealty to legendary swingmeister Jack Nicklaus, designer and namesake of the club’s signature Jack Nicklaus Course, and a participant in the inaugural Skins Game, staged at Desert Highlands in 1983. Completing the Golden Bear’s fab foursome were giants Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and winner Gary Player, who skinned $170,000 in the historic match. Each is recognized with a custom golf bag, staged at the clubhouse entry that leads into Jack’s and gives a sense of stepping into a PGA locker room – complete with old-timey touches, black-and-white photos from the day, and specially made bags for the club’s men’s and women’s champions. An interactive 55-inch TV screen invites members to scroll and relive video from the Skins Game, read media coverage of Desert Highlands, check out menus from Jack’s and the Ventana Dining Room, stay current on community real estate offerings and locate facilities, amenities and landmarks. “We’ve brought history and function into the clubhouse entry and carried it into Jack’s, because of the special place this club and its members hold in what makes Desert Highlands so unique and welcoming,” says Joan Sykora, director of sales and member relations. “We’ve taken a signature space, a generous space, and improved upon it for the enjoyment of our Desert Highlands community.” Those improvements boast a number of tailor-made touches. For the thirsty, colorful tap handles advertize local brews like Jack’s Bear Beach Bum Tropical IPA, San Tan Juicy Jack and Jack’s Foggy Doggy Coffee Milk Stout, among other tongue-twisting whistle-wetters. Hand-crafted Jack’s Hall of Fame Vodka produced by a club member is poured from a unique baseball bat-shaped bottle. Jack’s “gastropub” menu aspires to something greater than potato
skins and deep-fried mozzarella: Soups, salads, “Small Plates,” pasta, pizza, sandwiches and burgers, and “Clean Healthy Eating” choices (Try the mushroom and cashew lettuce cups.) rule here. Seating has been expanded inside and outside – on Jack’s Patio – and a pair of open-air fireplaces provide a romantic heating source on cool desert evenings, while space heaters and large umbrellas stand ready as necessary. But, wait. There’s more. Another teasing appetizer on the Desert Highlands’ enhancements menu: Look for the opening of Jack’s Backyard in the summer of 2021 – an extension of Jack’s Patio with conversation seating around as many as three fire pits, a cooking station and two bocce
ball courts. Designed by landscape architect Wendell Pickett, Jack’s Backyard will “continue to advance and build upon Desert Highlands’ tradition, and offer an expanded setting for social interactions among good friends,” says Sykora. “It’s been our honor working for the members at Desert Highlands to bring back one of the great spaces in clubhouse history in the form of Jack’s gastropub,” says architectural designer Erik Peterson. “Turning this unique concept into its realized form is so rewarding for the incredible setting, the inspiration from the Desert Highlands team and their members, and the high standards that are the trademark of this incredible community and its world-class facilities.” Maybe that should be included on the Desert Highlands directional signs. ALL IN THE When Lisa Lucky was busy gaining a strong foothold in Arizona real estate in the early 2000s, she likely couldn’t have imagined the extraordinary way in which her business would grow. Now teamed up with her husband Matt and daughter Laura, the Lucky Team is a success story built on hard work and dedication SOM E T H I N G S P E C I A L Lisa Lucky’s success in real estate was never really in doubt; A hard worker with a strong understanding of (and love for) the North Scottsdale area, a knack for matching clients with properties that fit their needs, combined with a certain magnetism that attracted buyers and sellers alike, made success all but assured. By 2005, business was booming. Matt Lucky, then a successful engineer at Honeywell, had created Lisa’s website and gotten a real estate license of his own to help manage the business on the weekends. It soon became apparent that much like Lisa, Matt, with his calm demeanor and analytical view, had what clients wanted. As a team, Lisa and Matt had something really special. They took a leap of faith, and Matt left Honeywell to pursue real estate full time. Looking back now, Lisa’s only regret is not taking that leap sooner. Matt and Lisa continued to grow their business, navigating a changing market and economic challenges with aplomb. Always consistent producers, beloved by both clients

and other agents, Matt and Lisa had staying power. Russ Lyon Sotheby’s provided the perfect backdrop upon which to build their business, providing support every step of the way. This truly symbiotic partnership continues to give clients both the professionalism and prestige of a Sotheby’s brokerage, and the personal touch that one gets when working with a family business. It’s truly the best of both worlds. At age 18, Matt and Lisa’s daughter Laura was attending Arizona State University, working toward a degree in marketing and international business. She became licensed in real estate her freshman year and after several internships in marketing, worked with Matt and Lisa when her school schedule permitted. Lisa and Matt were very careful not to push Laura toward the business; they were acutely aware of the level of work required and wanted Laura to graduate before deciding whether she’d work with family.
IT A LL C A M E TO G E T H E R Laura Lucky had inherited her parents incredible work ethic, and by her senior year of college it was clear to everyone that the Lucky’s, with Laura on board, had something that worked and worked well. When speaking about her daughter, Lisa says without hesitation that Laura is agile, that she moves fast when opportunity presents itself. With incredible self possession and the same work ethic that built Lisa and Matt’s business, Laura, like her parents, is a force to be reckoned with. The Lucky’s proved adept at leveraging their unique

FAMILY
The family works from a shared office space and has an extensive system of checks and balances to keep the business manageable, they take meals together frequently to catch up and collaborate. Feedback is also key, their strong relationships and the ability to ask for and receive both occasional reassurance and honest feedback “makes us better”, says Lisa.
skill sets, and clients love their diversified expertise. With Lisa handling sales, Matt’s engineering background providing an invaluable analytical perspective, Laura handling all of the marketing and advertising, and the idea of working with a family business resonating with clients, the Lucky Team came together seamlessly.
D E D I C AT E D PE O P LE Speaking about their business now, the Lucky’s will tell you that the best part of working with family (aside from the time that they get to spend together) is working with the knowledge that everyone on their team is endlessly dedicated to both their clients and to the business as a whole. The Luckys enthusiasm for North Scottsdale translates easily into everything that they do, with extensive knowledge of the over 400 communities in the area, the Luckys are truly experts at finding the right homes and communities for their clients. They work together to assess each client’s needs and lifestyle to find the perfect fit.
COM I N G FU LL C I RC LE In 1997, Matt and Lisa made Troon Village their home. At a higher elevation than other communities, nestled between the McDowell Mountains and Pinnacle peak, with views of the city lights and a stone’s throw from world class amenities, Troon is a truly unique place. Incredible views and an award winning course round out the community’s natural splendor. Lisa built her real estate business around Troon Village because she knew that it was special, the perfect place to raise their family. Now Laura, having grown up in the community, has purchased a home of her own in Troon Village. Because the Luckys are heavily focused on the North Scottsdale area and are known as Troon Village experts, making Troon home made perfect sense for Laura. The commute is great, she recently had a listing two doors down from her home. Like most everything else about the Lucky’s business, it’s worked really well. ON THE RECORD WITH
LISA WEST Finest Golf Living sat down to talk with Golf Realtor extraordinaire, Lisa Westcott, of Silverleaf Realty to learn more about Arizona, Scottsdale and a record-breaking sales career.
The weather, cost of living, friendly people, one can be active outdoors 12 months out of the year, we have an international airport for those who require travel, if it is too hot in the valley in the summer you can get away to Flagstaff, Payson, Prescott, Pinetop, etc. which quite a few people do.
FGP: You’re obviously passionate about real estate and are incredibly talented; when and how did you know that this was the career for you?
FGP: You’ve built amazing relationships with your clients during your career, can you tell us a bit about what it takes to build that type of trust?
When I was 22 I worked for the original developer of the Scottsdale Four Seasons and got my feet wet. I moved away from real estate for about 3 years and missed it. I knew I wanted to get back into it some how and an opportunity presented itself with a luxury home builder and I jumped. Have loved it ever since. FGP: To expand on your origins, how did you know that Arizona was where you’d build your business? I moved here from the pacific Northwest thinking I would be here for 1 year. I’ve been here 26 years. I have loved watching it grow and learning about the desert and its beauty and all the amazing things Arizona has to offer. Hiking, biking, shopping, sunshine, golf, people are friendly, etc. Why would I ever want to leave? FGP: Why are so many people moving to Arizona and what has been their response to their new living environment?

My business is about taking care of the client and his/her/their needs, not mine. I am a people person and I love putting in the effort and time it takes to find the right home/property for them and the right buyer for their property when the time comes to sell. 95% of my business is repeat or referral because of this. There are a lot of critical timelines, documents, forms, etc. required to protect the client in a transaction. It’s important to me to make sure I take proper care so my clients feel comfortable throughout the whole process. FGP: You’ve had an amazing year and have closed two record setting deals; can you tell us a bit about how those came together and what it felt like to reach that type of career milestone? In 2020 I remember thinking to myself, “There’s no way I can sit still in my house for months. I am a social person, I love people, how is this going
COTT
to work?”. Well, 2020 ended up being a career year as I sold a record listing for $24,100,000 and an $82,000 mobile home for an out of state client’s family member. It has been an amazing career and I am honored, blessed and so incredibly grateful that I have clientele who trust me and the family I have that supports me. Yes, 2021 has started out to be another one of those years with a record sale. Who knows how the year will play out, but I’m ready for it. FGP: What would you want for potential buyers to know about the area? What makes it such a special place?
2020 record-breaking sale in Silverleaf for $24,100,000
Where do I start...everyone is happy, the sun is always shining, you can be active 12 months a year, there are so many things to do. Hike, bike, golf, swim, boat, shop, dine, etc. It is very clean. Traffic is easy to get to and from anywhere, we have major events such as spring training, Barrett Jackson car show, Waste Management Phoenix Open, Phoenix Suns basketball, Arizona Cardinals football, Phoenix Coyotes hockey, Phoenix Rising soccer, Phoenix Mercury basketball, Arizona Diamondbacks baseball, Major concerts indoor and outdoor, There is just so much to do and experience. This is home. FGP: Finally, what’s your favorite course to play? What course is on your bucket list? Silverleaf. I have been a member there since 2004, or 2005 I believe, and I love it. Members are fun, friendly and the facilities are incredible. Hmmm... I would have to say Augusta. I’ve heard so many amazing things about how traditional it is and how gorgeous it is. It would be a very special check mark if I had the opportunity to play it.

MODERN WINE STORAGE IS OUT OF THE CELLAR The Open Wine Storage Design Trend
A
t the end of the day, nothing is better than the taste of perfectly aged wine. The way wine is stored in homes and luxury golf communities has significantly changed over the years to reflect todays wine connoisseur. Since wine tastings, dinners, and socials encourage conversation, so should wine storage. Gone are the days of dark, cramped wine cellars and caves. The dark spaces created optimal storage for wine because it protected the delicious beverage from harmful UV rays. However, it simply did not reflect the grace and social aspects of enjoying wine. Today’s wine storage trends have embraced wine storage as a centerpiece in homes and public venues. Glass storage lines the walls and are illuminated with color changing LED lights. These modern -day wine storage options add to the ambiance of the room and encourage conversation about the entire wine process. In addition to an inviting look, modern wine storage is adaptable. Wine bottles of all sizes can be stored together. It allows collectors in luxury golf communities to worry less about how they will organize their wine and leaves them with more time to enjoy it. Bottles from 375 mL to 1.5 L can easily fit in modern wine walls.
can be combined to create a wine storage wall that perfectly matches the collectors unique design taste. A wine wall quickly becomes the focus of conversation because it reflects the personality and style of the individual.
WINE STORAGE DESIGNS MEET ART
TROON COUNTRY CLUB’S NEW WINE STORAGE
Modern wine storage combines functionality with artwork. When designing new, modern wine storage options, individuals can select a number of different materials. Tile, glass, and metals
The Troon Country Club recently commissioned Innovative Wine Cellar Designs to create a modern, tasteful wine storage option in its dining room. The previous storage option closed off the dining area and visually made the space feel cramped. Since wine is such an important aspect of the membership, the club wanted to implement new wine storage designs into the space to create a more open feel. The Innovative Wine Cellar Designs team created a fully enclosed glass storage that perfectly holds the club’s entire wine collection in one place. Rather than reading the wine list, members can see the entire wine list in the center of the dining area. Members can now enjoy dinner and a glass of wine from the club’s new wine storage wall.

Q & A W I T H P R E M I E R D E S E R T M O U N TA I N R E A LTO R
TAMI HENDERSON FGP: You’re known as an expert on Desert Mountain, what initially attracted you to the community? Initially, it was my husband that introduced me to Desert Mountain. Indulging in my dream to live where we could be active adults with plenty of opportunities to make new friends and lots of sunshine. He was on a mission looking for the perfect place for us and it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with Desert Mountain! It was almost 10 years ago when we moved here, and I have not looked back once. Living here year around allows me to really enjoy every nuance of the community and my wonderful neighbors. FGP: Can you tell us a bit about your background? I had an early start in the real estate industry, as a receptionist at a mortgage bank, while working to put

myself through college. From there I had the bug! Eventually, I transitioned to Escrow & Title Insurance, where I worked my way up to Vice President in one of the largest title companies in the world. Over the past 30 years, have provided professional real estate industry training and assistance to thousands of people including attorneys, real estate agents, brokers, realtors, escrow officers, lenders, investors, buyers, sellers, and even the FBI. My diverse background provides my clients a rare realtor who is well versed in not only the fine print of contracts, along with a strong understanding of marketing, negotiation teamed with expertise in the luxury home market, specifically Desert Mountain. Along with being a resident, Club Member, and on the Desert Mountain HOA board, I also own and manage the Saturday Desert Mountain Luxury Home Tour. I oversee the weekly tour along with the website and social media platforms, but more importantly, I am able to share information with agents and would-be buyers that are
unfamiliar with our wonderful community. I enjoy the relationships I have made while providing an opportunity to support the real estate market for everyone in Desert Mountain. FGP: How did your affiliation with Russ Lyon come about? How is working with Sotheby’s? I am blessed to be affiliated with the greatest real estate brokerage in Arizona backed by the most successful luxury company in the world. Shortly after obtaining my real estate license in Arizona, I joined the Russ Lyon office at the Desert Mountain Front Gate. It is the perfect fit for me, with my many ties to Desert Mountain as it allows me to stay on property for the majority of my time. Utilizing the tools available to me through Russ Lyon and Sotheby’s International Realty’s global presence and adding these to my own strategic marketing plan provides an extraordinary experience for my clients. FGP: What most differentiates Desert Mountain from other elite golf communities? There are so many reasons to love Desert Mountain, I truly cannot imagine why anyone would want to live anywhere else! Our seven exceptional golf courses are just the beginning. Sprawling over 8,000 acres in the foothills of the Tonto National Forest, with ten dining opportunities, 9 tennis courts, pickleball, miles of hiking trails, and diverse residents afford opportunities for life-long friendships. Our Sonoran Spa and Fitness center offers
everything from acupuncture and stone massage therapy to beauty services for both women and men. All of this in a community where you can listen to live music overlooking the valley or simply enjoy the tranquility and splendor at you own home, Desert Mountain offers it all. FGP: What advice would you give potential homebuyers who are looking for the perfect golf community? When I meet with Buyers that are new to Desert Mountain, I endeavor to have them think of it as a journey vs. just buying a house. I enjoy sharing the experience of discovering Desert Mountain. It is my goal to help them learn the special nuances of our community and find their next home to start enjoying the next chapter in their lives and creating cherished memories. FGP: And finally; what’s your favorite course to play, and what course is on your bucket list? Sadly, I am just learning to play, so I could not really say with any sort of expertise which is my favorite course to play. I enjoy them all for different reasons, currently my favorite is Cochise. Reason being is that my home overlooks the course and every day I take the time to stop and enjoy the view and appreciate how very lucky I am to live in my very own idea of paradise.

DISTINCTIVELY TROON Excellence Reinvented
M
ember-owned Troon Country Club was designated Best New Private Club and a Top 100 Course in the World when it opened in 1987, and its members have remained dedicated to living up to these honors ever since then. Troon Country Club member-owners have invested more than $13 million in capital improvements over the last five years, including last year’s $7.5 million clubhouse expansion and renovation, which earned the fitness facility Golf Inc.’s recognition as “Best New Amenity.” Despite the unprecedented circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Club launched a $4.6 million “wall-towall” enhancement of its award-winning Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf golf course in April, which was completed December 1, 2020. Weiskopf made design modifications to enhance playability, accentuate site lines and assist in course maintenance. All greens have been resurfaced with A4 bent grass, all tees leveled, and several new forward tees added. Tee boxes, fairways and rough have been redressed with TifWay 419 Bermuda grass. Bunkers have been modified (some eliminated), reshaped, and rebuilt incorporating a technically advanced drainage and liner system featuring Capillary Concrete. This new generation lining method increases the speed at which water flows through the bunker; minimizing washouts, reducing maintenance, and producing superior playability. The new bunkers are filled with Caltega bunker sand and are expected to last for many years to come. The irrigation system will be updated with all-new high-density polyethylene mainline and lateral piping; new Rainbird IC system sprinkler heads with central control; and a new WaterTronics pump station. This ultra-efficient irrigation system will support the club’s water conservation efforts

by allowing crews to individually control each sprinkler head on the golf course. The current golf course project comes on the heels of Troon Country Club’s recent $7.5 million clubhouse expansion and renovation, completed in January 2018. Douglas Fredrikson Architects of Phoenix oversaw the project, which embraced the Club’s evolving culture, camaraderie, and wellness and gave the clubhouse a fresh, modern look, featuring a 9,000 square foot Wellness Center on the newly added second floor of the building. The state-of-the-art Wellness Center now includes indoor and outdoor space for more than 20 group classes, TRX suspension training, a private Pilates studio, on-site personal trainers and a nutritionist providing customized personal fitness regimens, physical therapy, specialized stretching, therapeutic body work, steam room and private lounges. In 2020, the Club added pickleball courts and is building a bocce pavilion.
