It’s funny how each city has its own distinct style and character… and whether the rest of the country acknowledges it or not, Melbourne is inarguably the cultural centre of Australia. Nope, no bias here in fact I was born and raised in Sydney and I now live in Perth. I have however spent a lot of time in Melbourne, including a year here and there until four seasons in a day drove me to near insanity and back to predictable climates, so I do know Melbourne quite well. Aside from the fact that you rarely get a bad coffee, or meal, or service… in my view what makes Melbourne so different from the rest of the country, are the diverse cultures that seem to coexist so harmoniously. Classic European-style elegance and sophistication balanced with a grunge rock star kind of cool. You see it in the fashion, in venues and even in the building styles. Just have a flick through our fifth annual edition of Melbourne Custom Homes and you’ll get the picture (plenty of them).

“I see this as a win not just for our team at Adrian Zorzi, but also for the WA building industry as a whole,”managing director Adrian Zorzi said. “There is an incredible pool of construction talent and craftsmen in our State, and our Witchcliffe home is testament to that.” This outstanding custom built Georgian style home is situated on acreage beside a picturesque dam just south of Margaret River. The six bedroom, nine bathroom home has been finished with luxury finishes in the highest quality materials and the home is also fully automated with Control 4 and C-Bus automation. “Everyone in our team – from designers and supervisors, to site workers and tilers – took an incredible amount of pride in delivering this home, which is evident in every detail,” Mr Zorzi said. “To have it recognised with this prestigious Master Builders Association award is a credit to everyone who worked on it.” Master Builders Association executive director Michael McLean said Mr Zorzi’s win shines a spotlight on WA’s South West region and showcases the absolute pinnacle of craftsmanship and talent of the skilled local tradespeople.

Turnkey to Toorak Situated just 5 km’s from the Melbourne CBD alongside the winding Yarra River it’s no surprise real estate in Toorak is in high demand. Arguably one of Australia’s most prestigious suburbs, it’s home to some of the most beautiful residential architecture in the country. Hidden behind walls on leafy tree-lined streets are grand old mansions many of which have been in the hands of affluent Melbourne family’s for decades. Whilst these may be in short supply, one Melbourne building company has forged a reputation on building new Toorak homes of equal style and calibre that reflect the classic elegance that has become a Toorak trademark.

The story of Royale Construction began in 1982 when Peter Johnston completed his first home. In the decades following, he built a stellar reputation for delivering homes of exceptional craftsmanship with a personalised service beyond none. Today, the company’s focus is on luxury European inspired homes that meld elements

of classic architecture with contemporary features demanded by today’s modern family. With incredible detail the homes are of course beautiful but more than this the exceptional standards that Royale Construction demand ensures that every home is completed with the absolute highest quality finishes imaginable.

In Royale’s pursuit for perfection Peter himself travels the world hand selecting the finest natural materials making demands such as consistency in texture and colour from stone quarries and fabricating fireplaces and other fixtures to Royale’s own exacting standards. Regular trips to Europe also involve researching new techniques and luxurious details to implement in the latest builds, and working for many years with a consistent team of highly skilled craftsman ensure the company’s outstanding reputation is upheld.

From an initial meeting Peter will gain a thorough understanding of the client’s requirement. Royale Construction will then handle the entire process which can include seeking out the best site for the client using their intimate knowledge of Melbourne’s innereastern suburbs and their close relationships with the area’s key

real estate professionals. These relationships allow Royale access to some of the finest addresses in the area, often before they hit the open market. Having selected the ideal site, the company can negotiate the purchase, coordinate all approvals, remove any existing buildings and prepare the site for the new home.

What truly sets Royale Construction apart from other luxury home builders however is their approach - offering a complete ‘turnkey’ service to discerning clients who are seeking a luxury new home in Toorak providing everything from locating the right building site to complete interior fit out inclusive of furnishings. Along with construction of the home Royale’s complete interior design service ensures that the overall styling and ambiance is consistent and matches the quality standards of the rest of the home. Like the materials that go into the construction of the home, interior fittings and fixtures are sourced from the best available worldwide. To complete the turnkey approach, Royale’s interior designer Tanya Johnston goes as far as furnishing the home, often with imported French or Italian furniture, so that when the keys are handed over to the client they are truly entering a fully completed luxury European style home.

Aeronautical Inspiration With a design influenced by aeronautical elements, the contemporary faรงade of this luxury home in Balwyn North by Grollo Homes is both striking and eye catching. Cantilevered eaves protrude past the body of the home, just as the wing of an airplane protrudes outward from the fuselage, whilst a triangular shaped metal element represents the nose of a plane in a vibrant orange that contrasts with the blue sky above.

Bespoke design and quality construction are reflected in the contemporary elements of the interior such as the angular kitchen island bench that despite its stone finish appears light and airy. Soaring floor-to-ceiling doors and windows create a sense of grandeur and space, and American Oak flooring with a high gloss finish soften the contemporary lines of the home whilst adding a warmth and luxurious feel finish that is continued to a central feature staircase.

Out of this World

LIGHTING WOW! This is what you’re most likely to utter when viewing one of Sharon Marston’s lighting installations for the first time. Not because of the size although some of her installations are nearly room size, and not because of the intricacy of detail that goes into each of the installations with some containing several thousand pieces woven together, but purely because of the ethereal quality of her work that gives it a look that is quite ‘out of this world’.

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

51

It’s easy to see how Marston’s background in jewellery design may have influenced her work, with each installation sparkling with gem-like qualities, however it was while photographing costume designs during her work in the theatre and noticing how light interacted with woven nylon that her interest in lighting design was first sparked.

52

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

Since 1997 Marston has experimented with a diverse range of materials fusing fine bone china, hand-blown glass, and woven polymers with fibre optic filaments in unique ways that create the ethereal qualities that are present in all her work irrespective of shape and size.

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

53

The breathtaking pieces have certainly captured people’s attention and the company’s impressive client list includes luxury private residences all of the world and a number of prestigious commercial installations including Harrods, King of Saudi Arabia’s Royal Lobbies, Trump Soho Tower in New York, Michelin star restaurants in London and a recent mammouth sized sculptural installation at the Marina Bay Sands casino in Singapore

54

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

Each Sharon Marston light is designed and engineered specifically for the space, ensuring that every piece is completely unique and optimal for its surroundings. The company now has a team of technicians and engineers who work directly with clients as well as architects and interior designers, to produce these stunning intricate works of art. A standard size installation takes around three months to build at an investment of GBP10,000 plus with some larger installations taking up to 7 months to create and costing several hundred thousand pounds. For more on Sharon Marston, see

www.sharonmarston.com

Measuring 20m in length 10m in width and 15m in height, this stunning installation at Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore incorporates 48,000 hand-crafted flora inspired shapes that tumble down the atrium and encircle the two escalators at the entrance and took over 7 months to complete.

COLOUR 2017 We all know colours go in and out of fashion – for everything from interior décor to clothing and graphic design, but who decides what’s hot and what’s not? You’d be excused for thinking it’s the fashion elite, or interior design gurus of the world – the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Kelly Hoppen – right? Well think again…the colour tendsetter of the western world is in fact PANTONE®.

58

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

If you’ve ever designed a logo, approved a brochure or had a business card printed, you’re probably familiar with the name PANTONE – a company which has built its reputation by developing colour matching formulas. Well it is in fact PANTONE ”Colour Forecasters” who research colour popularity and trends, based on that they predict what colours will be popular up to two years ahead. Designers and manufacturers of all kinds - fashion, interior, furniture and more tend to base their collections and new ranges on the PANTONE forecasts, which is why you see the same colours in all the stores. So what are the colours for 2017? Many of the hues for next year echo the colors of nature, both muted and earthy and vivid and bright and, from Hazelnut, a pale earthy tone, to the vibrant Primrose Yellow, Pink Yarrow and Flame. There are several blue tones from the dusty Niagara, and rich Lapis Blue to the appropriately named Island Paradise which looks like the water of Bora Bora.

PANTONE’S 2017 COLOUR OF THE YEAR – GREENERY Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, was very philosophical about the choice saying ‘Greenery’ symbolises “the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment” and “the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.” So here’s to a green year!

Vineyard Home Situated on one of the Mornington Peninsula’s most prestigious vineyards, overlooking the vines and taking in the views of the distant hills, the contemporary, minimalist façade and fully clad timber exterior of this new home by award winning builders Quality Built is a dramatic and striking presence in its rural surrounds.

62

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

Built to meet the needs of the winemaker as a modern functional home suitable for their rural lifestyle, this stunning new residence might be modest in size but that is where the modesty ends. Working with Finnis Architects, Quality Built have constructed a home that both inside and out can only be described as a work of art, combining quality materials with exceptional craftsmanship in unique design elements that demonstrate the skill and experience of the Quality Built team.

Inside the exceptional workmanship is clearly evident in the extensive custom joinery that features throughout the home including timber veneer panelling and a timber batten system that clads the entire ceiling of the open plan kitchen / dining / living area and alfresco. LED strip lighting has been skilfully set between the battens that when lit create a warm glow and highlight the unique angles and lines of the home.

64

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

To create a contrast between the natural woody tones and white painted walls feature timber panelling was stained black adding a sense of strength to the structure. It’s a theme that’s mirrored on the outside also with black stained hardwood timber windows and black stained timber posts to the fencing and landscaping that was also completed by Quality Built.

At the heart of the home a freestanding wood fireplace with custom made black metal fireplace storage and surround creates an unobtrusive separation between the dining and living areas. Black granite tiled floor flows throughout the space and continues the theme of contrasting colours in the kitchen where there are mainly white counters and cabinets.

One requirement of this vineyard home was the need for a cellar large enough to store 10,000 bottles of wine. During construction, ground works required to create the basement level cellar proved challenging however it has certainly paid off as the cellar has become one of the highlights of the home. Built into the granite floor above, glass floor boxes provide a visual view to the cellar creating a fabulous feature in the living area of the home and great talking point for guests. Behind the living areas a glass link creates a passage to the bedroom wing with its three bedrooms, two bathrooms and laundry. This quieter and more private space is oriented away from the vines leaving the living areas and spacious alfresco to make the most of the vineyard views.

66

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

Far from being a dark and uninviting space, this home’s cellar is brightly lit with feature LED lighting that highlights the feature timber clad columns and the wine bottles themselves.

Planning For The Future: How to Look After A Bottle Of Wine For A Celebration 30 Years From Now Buying a bottle of fine wine for drinking far into the future is easier said than done. However with planning, and a decent wine cellar, it can be achieved with a minimum of fuss. In your lifetime, how far have you realistically planned into the future? Discounting dull commitments such as mortgages, the reality is that many of us live day-to-day, week-toweek, and month-to-month, without any real consideration for what the coming years may hold - that’s all part of the surprise. However, wine aficionados may see things a little differently. When they purchase a rare, valuable bottle of wine, there is little to no chance that they’ll be opening it to accompany that evening’s fish and chips. More likely, it will

70

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

take pride of place in a fine wine cellar, left to age in meticulously-controlled conditions for years - perhaps even decades. Almost for as long as wine has been made and consumed by humans (a 9,000 year old a rice and honey effort from Ancient China is the earliest known example, according to Scientific American) we’ve been keeping that certain bottle on the rack for only the most special of occasions. With this in mind, have you ever considered purchasing a vino that you won’t drink until far

into the future? It’s not simply a case of picking a bottle of the shelf, putting it into wine storage and hoping for the best in three decades’ time the process of caring for an aged wine is a little more complicated than that. Here’s how you can pick a wine that will serve you will in the future! Choose a wine designed to age Not just any wine will improve with age. According to an article written by Pete Spande for Business Insider Australia, the vast majority of wines that we buy should be consumed within a comparatively short five years, with

many deteriorating just 18 months after bottling. The truth is, only a select few wines can age well past the 20 year mark. Even the most reputable of wine years can have a bad run of weather, ruining the terroir and markedly decreasing life expectancy. Therefore, it can pay to do your homework with regards to how your chosen year ranks, and there are numerous online sources to help you. Additionally, it’s also worth bearing in mind that if you had your heart set on a beautiful red Burgundy, but conditions weren’t especially great that year, you can always look around for a similar vino in a different area that enjoyed a stellar growing period.

Only a select few wines can age well past the 20 year mark. There are also a great raft of wines made with ageing in mind, and these tend to be reds wrought from the classic wine regions of Europe - Bordeaux, Burgundy, Piedmont and Rioja. Clarets from California’s Napa Valley are also a viable option. Part with the cash and buy the bottle The very best wines aren’t even up for sale for a fair few years after they are harvested. This can actually work in your favour, as you’ll be able to do a little research to ensure that you get exactly the bottle that you’re after. The longer the time span between the vintage year of the wine and its actual release date, the more expensive they tend to be. This is because you’re paying for both the wine itself, and the five or six years that it has been in storage.

How to buy your bottle

Store it properly

Don’t just go to your local supermarket and pick a bottle off the shelf - the chances are that it won’t be age worthy. For a wine with quality practically guaranteed, most connoisseurs will either head to a specialist auction or make their way to the winery itself. The very best wines aren’t sold until years after their harvest.

You’ve invested a lot of time, effort and money into choosing that perfect bottle of wine, so it would make little sense to store it improperly. Wine aficionados will know that light and heat can destroy a spectacular wine in mere hours, so keeping it in the correct conditions is vital if you want your wine to taste heavenly in 30 years’ time.

In this modern world of instant communication, there are several wine auctions that take place online. These auctions can be a veritable treasure trove of rare wines, and if the auction goes your way, you may even pay less than you were initially prepared to. It can also help to research which wines will be up for grabs - this will leave you better prepared and help you focus on the bottle that you really want.

You’ve invested a lot of time, effort and money into choosing that perfect bottle of wine, so it would make little sense to store it improperly. By going directly to the winery, though, you may well be able to pick up a bottle that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. Additionally, you can guarantee that the wine you pick up will have been kept in absolute optimal conditions - something that cannot always be said for those sold at auction. It only takes a few hours of direct sunlight or warm temperatures to ruin a bottle forever, so when you buy at the winery itself, you do so with the greatest peace of mind.

There are many storage solutions out there, but the key is to placing your valuable bottles in a climate-controlled wine cellar or cabinet, such as one from the wide range of Vintec and Transtherm wine cabinets. With wine cellaring cabinets from small 30 bottles units, to 4000 bottle Walk-In Cellars, and an extensive array of styles and features, Vintec and Transtherm wine cabinets have a wine storage solution to suit every need. All fully climate-controlled, they recreate the perfect storage conditions found in the best natural underground cellars to protect your wines, i.e: l by eliminating important temperature variations which denature your wines. l by maintaining humidity levels above 50%, so corks don’t dry and crack. l by keeping UV light away from your wine, with specially treated tinted glass doors Vintec and Transtherm are recommended by the most respected wine critics and are chosen by the leading sommeliers and restaurants across Asia Pacific. You only need to drive along the tree lined streets of Toorak, Caulfield or Brighton to see how Melbourne homes have been influenced by this classic style. Press and flush was yesterday. The toilet of today can do so much more: Rinse and blow dry, purify the air, and flush automatically. But often, the aesthetics are sacrificed for other benefits. TECE has now created a form that unites all functions. TECElux places the system components behind the wall, where they are invisible. An extremely flat glass facing closes the inspection opening and conceals the cistern. The connections for water and power are concealed behind the glass facing as well as optional odour trap and height adjustments.

LED “sen-Touch” flushing system-the buttons illuminate as you approach the terminal & flush operates electronically An invisible ”ceramic-Air” air freshening/odour extracting device located behind the glass panel The “m-Lift” function allowing you to adjust the height of the ceramic pan, even after installation Easy access panel to allow upgrades and maintenance on all these features inside the wall

With its simple aesthetics, TECElux blends in beautifully with the architecture of any bathroom.

TECElux Mini flush plate TECElux Mini is an electronic, real glass flush plate for the TECE cistern. Flush actuation is touch-free or by means of a light tap on the button area. The approach sensor recognises when a person approaches and activates the illumination of the button area, additionally serving as an orientation help in the dark. Using a programmable remote control it is possible to individually set the recognition range, actuation time and the illumination level of the display. It is also possible to set additional functions such as a hygiene flush or automatic flush with the remote control. TECElux Mini has a sleek minimalist design in black or white scratch resistant glass and can be flush mounted.

A dilapidated 1920’s heritage listed home in Sydney’s Crows Nest had been the home to squatters and the homeless for many years before being saved by its new owners with a vision to transform it in to a magnificent family home. The design for the new kitchen and bathroom by Minosa that formed part of the rear extension required careful consideration. Whilst being contemporary and finished with state of the art appliances and top quality materials the new areas of the home had to blend harmoniously with the restored heritage parts of the home. Clean and simple lines including cabinetry which conceals most of the kitchen functions and expert material choices such as timber veneer and a large format tile imported from Europe have been carried through to the bathroom, imbuing both areas with a rustic warmth whilst having a contemporary urban feel.

A Parisian style kitchen that ‘disappears’ was the brief for this Woollahra renovation and Minosa have executed it with stunning effect. The room is both luxurious and sophisticated whilst still having a warmth and elegance that epitomises European style. The ‘French’ feel has been achieved with panelled walls painted a brilliant white, contrasting with a modern twist on traditional herringbone flooring that has used longer boards stained in a dark chocolate and finished with a matt polyurethane coating. Panelled pocket doors that match the wall panelling glide open effortlessly to reveal a large work zone and small appliances. Luxurious hand-picked Calacatta marble tops both the island bench and its side panels whilst a servery in French Oak adds a touch of rustic ambiance to the room. In order to maintain the streamlined appearance, electronic door openers were applied to the fridge and freezer eliminating the need for handles on the doors and also function cleverly to close the doors if accidentally left ajar. DOLCE & GABBANA/SMEG REFRIGERATOR ARRIVES

in Australia

Launched to worldwide acclaim at the Milan Design Fair in April (2016), the first Dolce & Gabbana/Smeg limited edition hand-painted refrigerator has arrived in Australia!

In an innovative collaboration between the revered Italian fashion designers and the country’s leading kitchen appliance supplier, a strictly limited edition of 100 retro design FAB28 refrigerators will be hand-painted by a group of Sicilian artists, with each unique design reflecting the sizzling colour and Sicilian folklore that D&G is so famous for. Each refrigerator takes many, many hours to complete so the production rate is slow and the queue of interested buyers long!

The latter, based in Palermo, has created two designs, each depicting a traditional scene from Sicilian life. One shows fishermen catching a large octopus, with Mount Etna in the background while the other shows a verdant agricultural scene with lemons and sunflowers and a farmer picking his fruit by the light of the moon. Each refrigerator is completely covered in hand-painted artwork – front, sides and top – that relates to the signature scene on the door front.

Australia’s first D&G hand-painted refrigerator, painted by Sicilian brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Bevilacqua, will go on display at Winnings’ new store in Canberra. Characterised by a chromatic explosion of yellows and reds inspired by the Sicilian sun and the lava of Mt Etna, the design features sumptuous friezes and rich geometric patterns depicting the battle between Argante and Tancredi and another with Anthea of Babylon.

A total of 100 FAB28s will be transformed into luxury items that epitomise the passion for style and design that both Dolce & Gabbana and the family-owned Smeg brand are revered for.

An impressive collection of six refrigerators has just been completed, this time by renowned Sicilian artists Gianfranco Fiore, Tommaso Provenzano and Michelangelo Lacagnina.

Prices and availability in Australia on application.

No two refrigerators are the same and numbers are strictly limited to just 100 – so each piece is destined to be the most highly desirable collector’s item or family heirloom.

Go to www.smeg.com.au for more details

Each fridge is intricately hand painted and 100% original

The first of the fridges below were unveiled during Milan’s design fair Salone Internazionale Del Mobile 2016. Each unique in style, reflect the sizzling colour and Sicilian folklore of D & G’s much acclaimed Summer 2016 Fashion Collection.

FOR GREAT TASTE JUST ADD STEAM Now you can be sure of exactly the right amount of steam to create delicious results every time – effortlessly. The ProCombiPlus™ oven features our advanced humidity sensor to ensure the ideal taste, texture and colour when roasting meat, steaming vegetables, baking soufflés or making delicious SousVide dishes.

Humidity also prevents moisture from evaporating, locking in taste and preserving the texture of your ingredients with gentle and even heating so that nothing gets destroyed. This way, you get a golden brown crisp exterior without overcooking or under-cooking the interior. When baking, steam allows dough to rise more quickly and thoroughly because of how well it conducts heat. The humidity also prevents the dough’s surface from drying out too quickly and causing resistance in the rising process. Steam’s heat also produces a more complex caramelisation on the dough’s surface, creating thick and delicious crusts every time.

Understanding why heat creates taste and texture allows you to explore the potential of every ingredient, whether it’s precision induction heating or exciting new techniques such as steam and SousVide. Discover how different heating methods unlock delicious new flavours and start Taking Taste Further with every dish.

Constructing such a home was no easy feat, stretching to all four boundaries of the property, and sitting on a narrow residential street, designers and builders faced many challenges along the way. Delivery and installation of the 8 metre high off-form concrete panels was one of the biggest tests however well and truly worth the effort. The vertical timber grain of the panels looks spectacular alongside the real wood, Western Red Cedar timber cladding, that wraps various elevations of the home and is expected to naturally grey over time.

The design of the home, right down to every last detail, was a major collaboration between Visioneer Builders, designer Elisabeth Vodicka and the clients, resulting in a home that the owners are absolutely delighted with. Despite the small lot the clever design has integrated everything on their wish list. In addition to the two bedrooms and two bathrooms the home delivers two studies, a beautiful library, entertainment room, living room, a gym and a 3-car garage.

While there are two outdoor areas on ground level, one on either side of the connecting bridge, the rooftop terrace provides the real wow factor. From here, the home’s owners can experience the ultimate in privacy with the added bonus of beautiful views out over the trees in this established, heritage neighbourhood.

Specialising in Industrial, Aviator and Luxurious Custom Made Showpiece Furniture

It was owner Cristian Cocolea’s passion for both style and interior design that gave birth to the business Cocolea—a new Australian retailer who has been making their mark with a stunning range of luxury aviator furniture, lighting and home décor all of which are true statement pieces.

If you’re not familiar with the aviator look, think striking, elegant highly polished metals; aluminum, copper and brass combined with luxurious aged leathers ‘Gatsby’ style. The aviator look is definitely unique, a blend of styles that combine rustic industrial touches with a unique luxurious statement finish. Cocolea’s pieces have been catching the eye of both interior designers and discerning buyers who are looking for high quality timeless statement pieces. Working with MASSIMO Interiors, the in-house interior designer who styled and designed the furniture layout

and Monastero Bar design, Cocolea recently fit out the Pol Roger VIP Marquee for Land Rover’s Polo in the City Sydney & Melbourne. Here, celebs like ‘The Bachelor’, Sydney Fashion Blogger Antoinette Marie and Pettifleur Berenger were seen draped over their luxurious aged white and tan leather chesterfields and metal trunk tables. Deviating from the typical aluminium seen in this style, Cocolea have introduced an ultra luxurious copper and brass range with a stand out being some of the vintage white leather that elegantly wraps the lounges, chairs and stools that were showcased at the Polo VIP Lounge.

Another unique area to Coclea’s business is their custom made furniture service and the sourcing of Propeller Art for clients. Complete customization of furniture allows buyers to have a unique piece they have always envisioned come to life tailor made to their specific requirements. The propeller Art service specialises in sourcing propellers from around the world in line with the customers request on size, type and finish of Propeller allowing buyers to own a piece of art which tells its own unique story. A range of the art and their stunning furniture can be found in their new showroom that was recently opened in Melbourne’s Yarraville (furniture placement styled by MASSIMO Interiors) which is fit out in keeping with an industrial style with stunning effect.

LUXE LODGE A multi-award winning project that reaches new heights in luxury.

Start with the setting, perched on a mountain top, surrounded by 200 acres with far-reaching views of the Glasshouse Mountains, Moreton Bay and Brisbane. Next, add a discerning client who desires a home that not only represents the highlights of their own travel experiences, but that provides a feeling of wellbeing that surpasses their stays in some of the world’s most glamorous hotels. The result? Luxe Lodge.

Almost every element of this high-end luxury hotel-esque ‘weekend retreat’, (yes this is just the owners weekender), was custom designed by Mark Gacesa of Ultrapsace who worked on the client’s main residence located in Brisbane. And with an area of around 900sqm this home boasts so many unique features they’re difficult to mention.

144

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

The project has been awarded over 30 design awards, including the HIA Australian Kitchen of the Year which at first glance, could be mistaken for a luxurious front desk of a boutique hotel. It masterfully blends into its surroundings thanks to clever concealment of appliances and prep areas which quickly transform into a gourmet kitchen when required. To the side there’s a bar with window that fully rotates up, providing access to the bar area from the sprawling balconies, outside.

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

145

The Master Suite incorporates too many architectural design features to mention, but highlights include a movable wall which, when closed, provides the ultimate in privacy behind a seamless wall of oak battening. Then there’s the Master ensuite with its huge glass art centrepiece that allows for amazing views to Brisbane and Moreton Bay from the shower.

146

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

Mark’s material specifications included extensive use of timber, both inside and out, complemented by natural stone and rock as well as marbles and granites all. Perhaps less expected is the use of natural hides, real and faux fur, leathers, and even thatched wall coverings. Plenty of metal was used too, but custom finished of course to a specific shade to give it an aged bronze appearance.

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

147

Some of the home’s best design features can be seen in the living spaces. Unique window box seats appear to float within the surrounding glass and thanks to the antique leather padding provide a comfortable place to take in the incredible views, as does a mosaic tiled fire pit that is accessed from the wide verandas.

148

MELBOURNE CUSTOM HOMES

At the centre of all this is the pièce de résistance – a spectacular 3m long double-sided marble fireplace, and as if that alone isn’t quite impressive enough, this one can also rotate! Gacesa credits the outstanding team work of Ultraspace, with contractors Stewart Homes and Victor Barta from Minka Joinery whose exceptional craftsmanship in the project ensured that some of the ‘never seen before’ features were executed with outstanding results, seeing Luxe Lodge recognised with multiple industry awards.

Axolotl products are also referenced in the New York Material Connexion database and were featured in our own Powerhouse Museum here in Sydney for 12 months.

Managing Director, Kris Torma, tells us that the business does not intend to rest on its very successful laurels. “We started off as a metal surface alternative… but over the years we see ourselves just as much as an innovation and ideas business, constantly testing the paradigms of how materials can be manipulated and enhanced to deliver exceptional and original design - hence our new mission to be ‘The Future of Surface’.” In line with this ongoing quest to inspire and innovate is the recent launch of Axolotl Architectural Paints. The paints themselves deliver the crafted quality that is synonymous with Axolotl, enhanced with the latest technical innovations. Combined with Axolotl’s understanding of materiality and colour in the built environment, the

range is offered in a limited edition, curated palette of on trend colours and effects. The range has also been developed from the perspective of environmental respect and conservation, and is water based, has low and zero VOC’s. It is easy to use and comes in a range of acrylic paint, micaceous iron oxides and timber washes. The paints are available for internal and external application. Funky Monkey Bars is the brainchild of Shane Roberts, who back in 2009 resorted to designing his own set of monkey bars for his two young daughters after failing to find what he wanted in pre-fabricated sets. Bombarded by requests from neighbours and friends to build one for them too, Shane developed Funky Monkey Bars into a business and in 2014, Shane was joined by Colin Burdle, a structural engineer from the UK who saw further possibilities for the concept in both additional flexibility and features that now make ‘Funky Monkey Bar’s fully customisable to the requirements of each individual family. The design and quality of the Funk Monkey Bar playgrounds have caused the company sales to skyrocket and their Yangebup, Perth-based business has recently been awarded the Business News Rising Stars Award, recognised as one of the Top-10 fastest growing companies in Western Australia. With their quality construction and flexible designs it’s no wonder these modular sets of colourful monkey bars are turning the heads of practical parents who are looking to get kids outside and active.

One aspect that captured the judge’s attention was Formation Landscapes’ expert treatment of a difficult site that has enabled them to create a flowing space that incorporates everything you’d want for luxurious outdoor entertaining. Surrounded by frameless glass fencing the sparkling pool with built -in mosaic tiled spa creates is a focal point at the centre of the entertaining area. A retaining wall has been built on one end supports a raised timber deck of grey iron bark. Generously sized and with feature lighting it’s just one of several areas to sit and enjoy the tranquility of this lovely space.

Ensuring that the space can be enjoyed all year round, Formations have designed a fabulous outdoor room. Clad in feature stone and timber and with timber look flooring, it has a rustic appeal that allows it to blend harmoniously with the surroundings. With indoor lounge and dining table, the room opens up completely via bi-folding doors creating an expansive entertaining space for summer days whilst in cooler months the room becomes a cozy place to relax in front of the wood fire. A stone feature wall with built-in firewood storage also adds to the character of the rustic style room and the fully equipped kitchen includes a pizza oven, slimline SMEG barbeque and double bar fridge.

WATER FEATURES There is something very relaxing about the sound of water trickling in the background. It’s possibly just our basic human need for water that makes us feel comforted knowing that it’s in close proximity but there is certainly a surge in popularity for water features with most new homes incorporating one of some kind. Here are 5 of our favourites.

3 The owners of this five acre Sydney estate had an unused horse arena they wanted landscaped. The brief for Sydney’s award winning Rolling Stone Landscapes was to create an area that blended seamlessly with the already detailed and established gardens. Not only was this achieved but an element of the arenas past was worked into the design via a life size stallion cast from bronze that sits majestically on top of the three tiered water feature.
