Eco-Friendly Beach House Specialising in highly specified and ‘difficult’ builds, Sydney’s Mardini Constructions completed the construction of this striking new custom home that is featured on the cover of this edition with the exceptional quality and detail they have become renowned for. The result is a home that not only met the client’s unique and challenging brief but is a stand-out amongst other homes on the street.

With a building site adjacent to Sydney’s Freshwater Beach, a home that would withstand the conditions of its coastal environment, with minimal maintenance requirements was at the top of the client’s priority list. A second request was for extensive use of organic materials, so as to create a home that had an inviting and natural ambience.

26

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

Answering to the low maintenance brief, the home, designed by Brewster Hjorth Architects is constructed primarily of concrete which has been clad with recycled spotted gum screens. Situated on a corner site, the screens add privacy to the home as well as architectural interest. With the front of the home taking in the stunning coastal views, extensive glazing has been used and a unique hydraulically operated window incorporated to allow the second floor open plan living area to be opened up at the press of a button and allow in the ocean breeze. This window also closes automatically in bad weather. Using concrete slabs and walls, the entire home was constructed on-site which required Mardini to work with exacting detail and tolerances.

Inside, the home has been completed with a number of bespoke finishes that highlight the quality of craftsmanship that the Mardini team are renowned for. Again low maintenance materials have been used which include terrazzo floors, polished concrete walls, and eco-friendly self-cleaning glass. Cross ventilation design in conjunction with well insulated construction means air conditioning is not needed. Creating cohesiveness with the exterior finishes, an extensive amount of recycled spotted gum has also been used in the interior spaces, including feature slats as ceiling cladding and treads on the staircase. Despite the industrial style finishes, the warmth of the timber creates an inviting ambience throughout the home.

Extending The View This remarkable project by HR Constructions involved the transformation of an existing double storey home in a prime Sydney location, into a much larger four storey home, not by adding floors above as one might expect but by adding two lower levels, requiring extensive excavation of the rock foundations and propping up of the existing residence so that the additional floors could be added, and existing floors extended and modernised.

Construction was completed using large, suspended concrete slabs and masonry walling. Of course, working with an existing home insitu created several difficulties, including space restraints that required the HR team to cut out the existing slab with a remote controlled concrete saw. The resulting home however is a stunning, luxury residence which incorporates over 672sqm of floor space and offers breathtaking views over Balmoral Beach, Middle Harbour and The Heads from all four levels.

Two lifts service the home as well as this stunning offform concrete, spiral staircase.

From the street, the front faรงade makes it quite clear that this home is unique. A contemporary profile with extensive timber cladding that is continued on the garage and entry door - so that they are almost hidden from view like secret entries, combines with free form stone work which softens the angular lines.

Extensive glazing at the rear of the home has created a connection between interior and exterior living spaces.

The owners wanted a quality home with detail and the finishes throughout the home include feature timber, herringbone laid travertine, and extensive stonework, including a 6 meter high wall in the dining room which has been created by an upper floor void. There are also flush shadow lines to all walls, ceilings and doors and a stunning staircase with feature timber treads that cantilever out of a stone clad wall. Throughout, HR Construction’s quality craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail that was noted by the MBA judges is clearly evident, particularly where the stonework and other materials join.

With a cliff face at the rear of the property, the site required extensive excavation to accommodate the lower level and the mid-level outdoor entertaining and pool area which now resembles that of a tropical resort thanks to a pool-side pavilion and beautiful landscaping that quite incredibly also includes stone retaining walls in the cliff face above. Tropical plants and feature lighting on the cliff face add the finishing touches to a spectacular outdoor entertaining area that is also a stunning focal point inside the home.

Smeg’s genuine design choice We share love with family and friends, live for food and entertaining and do it with style. For nearly 70 years, Smeg has been adorning homes with the most elegant appliances, each designed and engineered to bring joy like a work of art. And because beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Smeg offers genuine design choice for individuals to choose an aesthetic style that reflects their own, personal taste. Smeg’s three architecturally designed collections, Classic, Linear and Victoria, will soon be joined by Dolce Stil Novo. With four distinctive aesthetic styles, Smeg has the widest choice to match every conceivable décor. Add to this the Classic and Victoria freestanding offerings, beautiful 50s style Small Appliances and FAB refrigeration, and it’s easy to punctuate and personalise your home with designer pieces from Smeg.

Classic Collection

Linear Collection

In 1985, world-renowned architect Guido Canali developed the Classic Collection, a design that pre-dated the stainless steel built-in appliance trend. Emulated across the decades, the Classic Collection has endured for over thirty years punctuated by its inimitable signature – the distinctive and beautiful “Canali” knob.

In 2005 Smeg developed the full glass door Linear Collection designed by architect Mirco Zanini. Linear’s design is based in fundamental elements and principles of design – line, shape, space, colour, balance and symmetry with ergonomic form. Available in lustrous silver, black and white, Linear by Smeg’s complexity is expressed in minimal simplicity.

Victoria Collection

50s Style Collection

Smeg’s recent Victoria Collection has irresistible nostalgic familiarity and surprising contemporary appeal. Victoria’s sumptuous curves, eye-catching style and radiant enamelled finish in black and panna (cream) is today shaping trends in kitchen design. Its versatility makes it equally at home in a country, Shaker or Hamptons style home as it is in a New York-style warehouse apartment.

Smeg’s 1950s-style FAB refrigerator has inspired luxe collaborations with doyens of fashion. At EuroCucina 2016 in Milan, Smeg released 100 hand-painted Dolce & Gabbana FAB fridges. As the only brand to offer a total kitchen solution – from fit-out to small appliances, Smeg is excited to announce a new collaboration between Dolce & Gabbana and Smeg. ‘Sicily is my Love’ was unveiled at Salone del Mobile di Milano, 2017, bringing Dolce & Gabbana’s unmistakable modern classicism to the benchtop, and high-end fashion into the home. #DGSMEG

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

With a 5 acre parcel of land in the Sydney hills suburb of Kenthurst, the owners of this new home not surprisingly wanted to make the most of the available space. Their brief to Jakin Construction Group was for a spacious family home that had a strong connection between the interior spaces and the outdoors, open-plan in style but with formal areas that could be closed off when required.

Jakin met the brief with this outstanding ‘resort –style’ residence which has been built in a U shape around a central courtyard, which provides every room of the home direct access to the outdoors and simultaneously creating a stunning focal point of the spectacular infinity edge pool and surrounding gardens also designed and constructed by Jakin as part of the project. Positioned on the site to take full advantage of the stunning rural vista, the home has been built with solar passive considerations that include double glazed windows to help control temperatures inside the home whilst still taking in the breathtaking views. There is also 100,000 litre rainwater tank used for irrigation and laundry and photovoltaic system.

Luxury Reno for Modern Living A large family home on a generous lot in sought after Turramurra is not easy to come by. So what do you do when the home is too good to demolish but not meeting your lifestyle needs? The owners of this home chose leading Sydney building company, Miniter Projects to undertake a luxury renovation with outstanding results. The 70’s built home required a complete overhaul, and extensive work was undertaken both inside and out to bring the home into the 21st century and create a functional home with large open spaces, sharp lines, and the latest technology.

76

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

To achieve the client’s goals and make the home more livable, existing walls were removed to enlarge rooms and create modern open-plan living spaces. Ceilings were also lifted for a feeling of space and grandeur. Creating a closer connection to the expansive outdoor living spaces, the back of the house was opened up to the rear pool and garden area. The backyard was completely transformed by retiling the pool and adding a covered pavilion with an alfresco kitchen for convenient outdoor living. A full upgrade of the tennis court included replacement of the collapsed existing slab and a total restoration of the surface.

Inside the original curved staircase made of concrete was replaced for better use of space and easier access to the top and basement levels. An inviting family-friendly living space was created when the luxurious new kitchen was moved to a new location and incorporated with the dining area.

78

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

Miniter Projects found major structural issues that required remediation and renovation. Most internal walls were inadequate, and new rooms were needed to fit the lifestyle of the occupants. There were water issues in the foundation and lower rooms, demanding new drainage throughout the property and underfloor mechanical ventilation. Insulation was upgraded and windows were replaced with custom commercial grade windows. Electrical wiring was also fully upgraded to accommodate the needs of the family. The extensive scope of the project was well worth the investment with an outstanding outcome for the owners that defines modern luxury living.

iconic australian artist

Charles Blackman Turns 90 Esteemed Australian artist Charles Blackman OBE, who turns 90 in August this year, first came to prominence in the Melbourne art world of the mid-1940s with his dreamlike images tinged with mystery and foreboding. Best known for his Schoolgirl, Avonsleigh and Alice in Wonderland series of the 1950s, Blackman’s career culminated in a major retrospective of his work in 1993.

90

Now in frail health, the artist’s affairs are managed by the Charles Blackman Trust, which manages the sale of works still owned by the artist himself to ensure his expenses are taken care of. The Bromley & Co galleries in Daylesford and Windsor, in Victoria, are among the few places entrusted with the sale of these artworks. Blackman has been a mentor to younger artist David Bromley throughout his career. In 2002, David was an Archibald Prize finalist with his portrait of Charles, an homage to a man whose iconic work epitomises a definitive time in Australian art history. In recent years, David’s admiration for Charles and his work has seen a further collaboration whereby, under the authority of the Charles Blackman Foundation, David has worked with a selection of Charles’ artwork, in particular his series of ink drawings on paper, to colour, collage and ‘reimagine’ the visuals through his own colourscape. The resulting works, the Blackman by Bromley collection, bring to light Charles’ drawings spanning from 2006 to the present with a playful flair and imagination, with part proceeds from the sale of these works playing a part in the support and care of the older artist as his health began to fail. David has always admired Charles’ no-nonsense nature and his ability to view the world and his surroundings as though peering down the rabbit hole, much like the Alice in Wonderland figures that feature prominently in his work. “I’ve spent a big part of my life endeavouring to turn dreams into reality,”says David, “and working with Charles is an honour so great that I would never have dared to dream it could be possible. I have had the good fortune to spend a lot of time with Blackman’s work and the opportunity to see in the flesh much of the last decade’s work.

“As I had done with my father, I mourned the loss of the vital expressive, surreal work of the Blackman I had revered for so many years. “Then, after years of seeing these works unfold I started to realise I was doing as I had done with my father, not being able to see the potency and poignancy of this stage and I was missing out on seeing this side of the man and his art. When I removed the veil from my eyes and from my thinking, I was able to see this new world unfold. “I now truly see this recent work and have entered once again into a “rabbit’s hole” type of experience that he has taken me into the past that was staring me in the face. Characters and stories ever present in his surreal mind, outpouring despite frailty. A determined hand connected to an imagination ever fertile, ever determined, making art, as usual, for his life. “As for his art, despite his condition, it can never be truly closed from memory, autobiography.”

Charles said to me once, a relationship with art is about the conversation and interaction you feel and have with a particular piece or body of art and then the conversation that the art has back with you.. BUTTERFLIES IN THE TUMMY / FIREWORKS IN THE EYES… A TWO WAY CONNECTION HAS BEEN FORGED …this is what I have with this decade of Blackman work—magic in a world of Charlie’s making.” — David Bromley

Individually, David and Yuge Bromley are creative forces to be reckoned with. Together, as Bromley & Co, the pair are a creative maelstrom. Under the Bromley & Co banner the well-respected artist and his wife run two creative studios, galleries in both Australia and in China, a fashion label and a burgeoning event and interior design service which is transforming hospitality spaces, hotels and even luxury custom homes into 3D artworks.

B

orn in Sheffield, England, David Bromley immigrated to Australia with his family at the age of four. After first working as a potter, David emerged as a painter in the mid 80’s and has since become one of the most recognisable contemporary artists in Australia, whilst also receiving widespread acclaim and notoriety internationally. As he stated in an interview with The Weekly Review: “I want to be like Crowded House or the Beatles - everyone’s got one of those albums” and it seems he’s well on his way to achieving his goal. As an artist, David has developed distinct themes and unique styles of painting, his best known being nude female portraits and his children’s series. Whatever the subject matter, his work is enduringly figurative, daringly coloured and executed with a graphic intention that is striking and memorable. More recently, David’s work has extended into sculpture, creating in both bronze and resin to bring to life the characters portrayed in his paintings. His work, both in painting and sculpture, has become integral to the key interior projects undertaken by Bromley & Co in recent years. David’s wife, Yuge, who was born in Beijing and brought up in New Zealand, originally worked as a lawyer while pursuing her passion for the arts. In 2012, she launched her own fashion label, Yugeyu, creating timeless pieces that blur the lines between art and fashion and often incorporating textiles designed by David.

Says David: “Like a farmer takes his intuition to the land and combines this with the pragmatic during the seasons, working hard and being creative every day is to us a language we speak together. When working together on numerous projects, we are each other’s Radar O’Reilly (think M*A*S*H), intuitively bouncing off each other. When we first met, we didn’t realise that neither of us slept much and found work more invigorating than socialising. The term ‘workaholic’ has been thrown around, but we disagree. With family at our core, we just do stuff together all the time. There are 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week, we measure a good day and night by how immersed we are in our creative adventure.” The pair’s approach to interior design projects is fun, vibrant and flamboyant, creating immersive art installations to live in, rather than interiors with a few artworks displayed on the walls. As David explains, “Art is just as essential as cars, fridges and lawnmowers. It gives an inherent quality of life.” “With a motley crew of collaborators / family of friends we constantly seek to bring our passions, our drive and wide range of skills to everything we pursue, be it art, design, retail, interiors or construction. Combining an established and multi-faceted capability in design, with an everexpanding web of passionate artists and artisans to create products and environments that we love to be surrounded in.”

The Bromley collaborators certainly are extensive and include major property developers, luxury home builders and brands like Dulux, Mercator and Zagame. The immediately recognisable Bromley child sculpture in the front garden of The Residence by Mazzei Homes in Melbourne in collaboration with Dan Webster Architecture and Nathan Burkett Landscape Design is an indication that Bromley & Co have been at work within. “Releasing in February 2018, is our interior fit-out for Mazzei Homes in Balwyn North,” says Yuge. “As part of our work for this luxury display home, we have been intimately involved in every facet and will be bringing in several customised design pieces including a 2.8 metre wide bronze wall relief featuring David’s iconic butterflies and birds in the main living area. We’ve also designed custom furniture pieces as well as curated an art collection for the home that will not only make the space a luxurious visual feast but somewhere people can feel entirely relaxed, at ease nestled in their nest.” On a larger scale, Bromley & Co have been

intimately involved with the West Village development in Brisbane by Sekisui House. “Our work on this major development has extended across a variety of realms,” says Yuge, “from working with the developers, architects, landscape architects and lighting designers to evolving and finalising components of the precincts through to creating a 1300 square metre function space, The Bromley Room, and the build of a rooftop loft apartment, The Little Bromley Loft, which will be a drawcard for the development and something to introduce people to the residential component of the precinct before it officially launches stage one in November 2018.” David and Yuge have also been engaged for the interior design and styling of other components in the precinct. “We will be back on site in April to work on the design and styling of the lobby and key entrance points for the first two residential towers, laneway activations, community engagement and art installations throughout the various beautiful and innovative park and green space areas.”

Then there’s the Pub With Two Names, a hotel like no other in Ballarat, Victoria. Here, Bromley &Co have created a uniquely art-centred experience within the 100-seat restaurant/dining/drinking area, adorning the space with paintings and sculpture reminiscent of their own studio spaces. “We wanted to create an enveloping experience where locals and visitors alike can feel transported to a fanciful space within the heart of Ballarat,” say Yuge. “Upstairs we have created a series of five apartments, three of which are available for rent while two will remain as our own residence. We will truly be the artists in residence of the pub and be involved intimately in the curation and styling of all the spaces on a regular basis.

The brief to ourselves when designing and decorating the apartments was Alice’s journey down the rabbit hole (adding a few mod cons along the way!).” The original stables built in 1887 will become the setting for supremely unforgettable events. “Set to open later in 2018, the Stables will be the epitome of entering into another world,” says Yuge. “While the Stables has been styled and set in our Mad Hatter’s way, we are still working on some extra special surprises for its launch.”

Further afield, the irrepressible Bromleys have been busy in China, opening a gallery in Xiamen in 2016. Through the gallery space, the pair have launched a variety of other branches of their vision – participating in Xiamen international fashion week, hosting events for Bentley, collaborating with a number of Chinese artists and linking in with a major online retailer to launch a series of Bromley & Co stores in each key city in China. Watch out world, art – and the unstoppable Bromleys – are coming soon to a space near you, creating realms of experience that excite, inspire, immerse and provoke with their curiouser and curiouser aesthetic full of life, whimsy, vibrant colour and insouciant disregard for all ‘rules’, trends and conventions. Contemporary Australian Beauty With a corner building site in one of Sydney’s northern beachside suburbs, the clients of this new home, built by Dancore Construction, wanted a home for entertaining, that would maximise the surrounding leafy outlook and district views and enable them to comfortably display their extensive artwork collection. The design solution by architect Peter Downes, was a simple rectangular shape, but with the addition of a few twists, such as an angled roofline and a unique combination of materials including Colorbond, weatherboard and sandstone the resulting home is a contemporary twist on traditional Australian architecture.

Although large, the clever exterior combination of sandstone and Colorbond has created a home that sits harmoniously in its surroundings whilst also being architecturally interesting from all angles. MAAS appeal Since coming to the world’s attention in the 80’s Christian Maas has been labelled as one of the great contemporary sculptors of the 21st century. Known for his eccentricities, Maas has developed somewhat of a cult following, working primarily in bronze and aluminium creating work that is humorous, erotic and often quite bizarre.

For me art is a game. A game of the first person (oneself) which allows you to break the rules in order to create your own rules and world, always with this pretention of matching your individuality with the universe.” — Christian Maas

Born on September 11, 1951 in Saint Étienne, Maas admits he was immersed in art from a very young age, growing up on a farm he created ‘stuff’ out of objects he found in the rubbish. Those creations led him to working in foundries throughout France before starting his own workshop. His body of work is now extensive, and incorporates over 100 public monuments, including a McLaren F1 racing car in Monaco – a tribute to the Grand Prix. He’s also created life-size sculptures of celebrities including Grace Knight and Kate Moss, however, it is the eroticised female forms and life size animalia that Maas is perhaps best known for.

Maas has won multiple awards and exhibited his symbolic and fantastic sculptures globally, including, New York, London, and the Middle East, as well as in his own galleries in St Tropez and Monte Carlo. Over the years he’s developed a slew of celebrity collectors and friends such as Princess Stephanie of Monaco and Bridget Bardot - a well known animal lover who Maas has donated animal sculptures co-signed by Bardot to auction in aid of raising funds for Bardot’s animal welfare endeavours. Although there are a large number of small table-top sculptures in Maas’ body of work, his passion is for the large - giant ferocious bulldogs, 6 foot tall hares, monumental skulls and life-size rhinos. Whether big or small, the appeal of Maas sculptures is certainly broad, with regular Christie’s auctions demonstrating an unwavering interest in his work, and a recent auction for 1 of 9 life-size rhino’s in aluminium fetching over $60,000 AUD.

I love the big format – it’s spectacular! I find it more interesting. I have gone so far as to produce a piece that is 12 metres high. ” — Christian Maas Opposite Page: Sarco. Top Right: Retour De Chasse. Right: Marilyn

“Why is it that so much art, not just painting but writing, music and dance is inspired by grief and heartbreak… I don’t know… but I anticipate I will be doing this series for a while.” — David Giles Wonder, 85 x 100cm

Whilst the sun setting over the ocean is hardly an original subject matter and draws on the romantic landscape tradition, The Solace Series artworks have been purposefully structured quite formally so that they can be read almost as Rothko-like colour field paintings. For David the series has also been a way for him to process the grief of a recent relationship break up, which sheds some light on the melancholy title of the series. “Why is it that so much art, not just painting but writing, music and dance is inspired by grief and heartbreak… I don’t know… but I anticipate I will be doing this series for a while.” says David. “I do tend to say that though about every new series, only time will tell.” Serenity, 65 x 85cm

Looking at works like ‘And then You Were Gone’ there is perhaps some evidence of emotional turmoil, however throughout the series there is a pervading sense of light, evoking a feeling of hope and optimism for the future. here once was a rather dull and uninspiring space - essentially a section of lawn beside the pool, is now a garden full of character, colour and texture, thanks to the team at Spirit Level Designs, whose mission is to create beautiful gardens that have a sense of connection both to the natural environment and to the people who will spend time in them. The lawn was removed and replaced with a mound garden which adds shape, colour and interest to the garden and the existing travertine paving was complimented with recycled sandstone, including a quaint sandstone table. A stunning stone fireplace was created using stone salvaged from a site in Bondi and meticulously pieced together by Spirt Level’s skilled stonemason demonstrating the commitment to quality workmanship that Spirt Level are renowned for.

A considered approach was taken to the contemporary design, to ensure that it blended well with more traditional homes in the neighbourhood and the result is a sophisticated, rectilinear design that flows from inside to outside through terraced spaces that follow the natural slope of the site. With an emphasis on outdoor living the expansive alfresco areas lead down to the pool, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and an outdoor pavilion with lounge and bar area.

From the street the home is striking. Walls clad in travertine in a manner that create an appearance of over-sized brickwork, are interspersed with walls finished in textured plaster that serve as a contemporary interpretation of the characteristic St Tropez homes finished in stucco.. An impressive custom designed, double-height entry door, with free form bronze handle adds a sculptural element to the horizontal lines of the faรงade. Entering into the home you are welcomed into a grand double height entry foyer with a spectacular floor to ceiling wall of glass that provides views to the stunning rear entertaining area and landscaped gardens. Throughout the openplan design, there is an interplay of solid walls and openings. The connection to the outdoors is emphasised through the use of full height windows and sliding doors that open into cavities, creating seamless transitions between interior and exterior spaces in typical, spectacular, SAOTA style.

A joint project between architects Paul Macintosh and Andre Hodgskin, the design of the home consists of two main volumes separated by a central courtyard with outdoor entertaining area and swimming pool. Of course, maximising the views of the outstanding location was integral for the owners, so bi-folding glass doors on either side of the main living pavilion provide a clear view from the guest quarters at the rear of the home, central courtyard, right through to the horizon.
