Castle in the

The story of a determined woman who refused to give up on her dream.

Sand

For seven years Tani Richards was told no, no you can’t do that, no it’s not possible, no we can’t help you… no no no no no! But when it came to building her dream home, for this Perth woman there was no compromise and her refusal to take no for an answer has eventuated in this stunning land mark home, her Castle in the Sand.

After many years living abroad due to husband Tim’s career as a pilot, Tani Richards had very specific ideas about the home she wanted to build to accommodate their large family. With an ocean side lot in City Beach, what she visualised was a home that would blend perfectly with its surroundings, be environmentally friendly and make use of natural materials, be small in its foot-print to allow preservation of the Norfolk Pines and other flora on the block, be unique and reflect their eclectic taste and lifestyle and be… well... a sandcastle! Visualising the house was the easy part, finding someone however who could transform her ideas into the home she imagined was an entirely different story. It’s no surprise really—after all… the house Tani imagined was not your typical home. Made largely of

stone, it had rounded walls, cathedral style windows, turrets and a moat—and was quite unlike any other home in the neighbourhood, or anywhere in Australia for that matter. Despite even her own architect father discouraging her vision, Tani was determined to see her dream home built. Doing the rounds for many years with various Perth builders, she was typically told that what she wanted was not possible or was influenced to convert her ideas into more traditional homes. It was not until she met James Shaw from Ecotect Architects in Swanbourne who specialise in eco-friendly homes that Tani finally found someone who was prepared to immerse themselves in her vision and translate all the elements on Tani’s wish-list into actual building plans.

Despite a few other ‘not-so-minor’ setbacks—including the primary contractor entering into receivership when the home was only 90% complete due to losses sustained on another project, the Richards finally moved into their castle about two and a half years after building commenced and nearly ten years in total after Tani’s initial start on the project. The Sandcastle now houses three generations, Tim & Tani, their four children and Tani’s mother, and father—who has been completely converted to his daughter’s ‘eccentric’ ideas and loves the stepping stone pathway across the moat that leads to the entry of their downstairs abode.

The End. In addition to the human residents The Sandcastle is also host to a number of pets and regular visitors who all get to experience this extraordinary home, thanks to an extraordinary woman who would not give up on her dream the architect and local artisans that helped her realise it.

Contemporary Opulence The progressive combination of clever architecture, interior design and organic natural materials blur the boundaries between art and construction, while open and light-filled living spaces combine with meticulous attention to detail to create an innovative and stylish contemporary home. Designed and constructed by Luxus Homes, this sleek Dalkeith residence comprises a total of 525m2 being split over three levels, the undercroft, ground and first floor.

The striking front faรงade of the home features stainless steel columns, Laminam oxide wall cladding and Japanese Inax tiles while beautiful landscaped ponds surround the front portico providing a tranquil, resort-style entrance to the home. Once inside, the central nucleus of this sublime residence is the imposing steel spine staircase with marble slab treads and a Laminam oxide clad lift shaft which links all three levels.

The large Arabescato Carrara island bench in the kitchen is truly the heart of this home. Integrated Miele appliances are cleverly concealed behind Servo drive and custom built cabinetry. The open-plan kitchen, living and dining extend out to the alfresco area via two sets of bi-fold doors with the rain sensored louvered roof allowing this well-proportioned space to cater for the largest of gatherings through to the most intimate affairs.

Upstairs, two bedroom suites are separated by a glass corridor with the sumptuous Master Suite at the front of the home. A marble fireplace provides a subtle divide between the bedroom and master ensuite whilst the ribbed ceramic tiles continue the clean and minimalist lines seen throughout the home.

The under-croft level oozes cool sophistication in the ultimate entertaining area, complete with Hollywood inspired cinema, pool table, stone bar, wine cellar and utility storage. The stabilised earth feature wall extends through to an external light court which showcases an impressive fire pit and six metre high waterfall.

38

CUSTOM HOMES

A tribute to the legendary architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, the home was designed with oversized eaves and a streamlined roof, and was constructed using a variety of low maintenance finishes that will allow the home to stand the test of time; polished concrete walls, timberlook tile wall cladding, and a mix of aluminium, steel and stainless steel all combine to both stunning and practical effect.

Though the home is set toward the front of the block it retains privacy and hence succeeds with the “retreat” feel that Empire was hoping to create. The front courtyard is well screened from the road and certainly offers a spa-like atmosphere thanks to the attractive built-in seating and combination of materials and foliage. Additional outdoor space is provided by the upper floor balcony though it’s the Alfresco that will likely see the most family use. It’s here that the indoor/outdoor transition works perfectly.

The narrow, east-west oriented site, provided a challenge to Luxus Homes which they have undoubtedly overcome using their experience, skill and superior building knowledge. Once again, the team at Luxus Homes have excelled by delivering an outstanding home that not only meets the client’s brief but is exceptional in all aspects.

Complete with kitchenette, this provides the perfect entertaining area which doubles as a secluded man cave. Presenting an elegant and polished ambience, the quality of craftsmanship is clearly evident throughout the home and is another Luxus Homes residence truly ‘Built to Perfection’.

Traditional Charm with Modern Style From the outside of this Mt Hawthorn home you may mistakenly think it’s a well renovated older home. It is however a newly constructed home by Kensington Design with cottage charm and traditional elements that externally allow it to blend beautifully with the style of homes in the area. To achieve the look, the designers used weatherboard cladding on an articulated front façade with a high pitched roof - featuring dormer windows. The carport is discretely integrated so as not to dominate the view of the entry. The house has two separate entries, the formal entrance occupies the traditional location off a raised covered brick verandah offset by the greenery of terraced landscaping at the side of the home. There is a convenient everyday family entry that leads directly into the kitchen/ laundry zone via the verandah walkway from the carport. Inside, the entrance foyer is enhanced by stunning Jarrah parquetry wood flooring in an intricate herringbone pattern that continues throughout the main living areas. The split level ground floor layout of the home was designed to suit the topography of the site.

Kensington Design created a striking black and white modern kitchen with an uncluttered look with gloss white cabinetry, honed Kabuki black granite kitchen bench tops and honed Carrara marble splashback. The large picture window admits a profusion of natural light into the room inviting family interaction at the built-in breakfast bar. Pendant lighting and a series of French doors add character to this distinctive home. The playroom is separated from the main living area by its discrete position and by the subtle change in floor level. This inviting space connects directly to the outdoor living and back garden, ensuring maximum access to the warming winter sun. A stunning floor-to-ceiling recycled brick wood-burning fireplace is the focal point of the open plan living and dining room. The home is a mix of modern elements and traditional character that blend beautifully to create a warm and inviting family home.

Big Ideas for Small Spaces Working with a very small lot, the challenge in the construction of this Applecross home was to maximise living space whilst preserving privacy from nearby homes. Downsizing from a large family home, the clients also requested a home with ample storage, something that might appear like a far-fetched luxury on a 213 sqm site. Despite the obstacles, the skilled team at Kensington Design have succeeded in creating a beautiful home that fits both the client’s needs and the restricted building site.

48

CUSTOM HOMES

It was clear at the outset that the home would need to be double storey. Kensington Design developed an articulated floorplan with a focus on scale to visually reduce the bulk of the two-story structure and minimise its impact on the neighbouring single-story homes. For the exterior of the home limestone, weatherboard and face brickwork have been combined harmoniously for a timeless façade that maintains a strong presence whilst integrating well with the existing streetscape.

Kensington Design incorporated passive solar design principles throughout the home. A two-storey parapet wall on the south boundary enables optimum utilization of the northern aspect of the site, and effective breeze pathways provide comfortable conditions within the home without reliance on air-conditioning. The plan focuses on indoor/outdoor connectivity with additional windows that improve cross ventilation.

To maximise the living space, bedrooms occupy the upper levels. Downstairs, an open plan layout combines the living, dining and kitchen areas on this diminutive 213m2 lot. The north facing courtyard ensures good solar access to the living room while providing generous outdoor living space. The courtyard is accessible through sliding glass doors that bring the outdoors in. A full-length awning roof protects the living room from the summer sun. The kitchen incorporates white panelled cabinetry, Ceasarstone benchtops and a striking gloss white subway pattern ceramic tile splashback. The master bedroom suite is positioned at the far side of the courtyard to ensure privacy

within the house. This private retreat is accessed via a light-filled library gallery and provides an ensuite bath, a dressing room and a functional desk nook. A box room off the studio was included for general storage, and the under stair space is accessed from within the garage for golf club and bicycle storage. Kensington Design is known for creative solutions that exceed the expectations of owners, even when faced with long “wish lists and sticky problems. In addition to their reputation for maximising space on small lots, the company is skilled in creating a seamless blend of old and new in traditional homes and integrating exterior facades with the existing architecture in the neighbourhood.

It is through John’s extensive experience that the S2F (Start to Finish) program has been developed to minimise the build time to a time frame unmatchable by many other boutique builders and at an overall saving for clients in both time and cost, whilst maintaining quality. ”After 25 years of building luxury custom homes I have refined the formula of ‘Speed, Quality, Value and Service’.

Exclusive Residence is a multi-award winning builder, these homes pictured below and above represent just a few of the homes that have received industry recognition.

As the cost of luxury is becoming beyond the reach of many, our solution in reducing costs is to a) make all decisions up front before the contract is signed and b) build it quicker. This saves our clients in both interest on finance and rental costs. Importantly speed and efficiency do not come at the expense of architectural flair, quality or customer service. Our luxury homes are all six-star energy rated and my team are systematic and thorough, building each Exclusive Residence as if it were our own home. I look forward to the honour of working with you to build your next home.“ —John Douglas, Master Builder

The detail that continues on the exterior of this beautiful home ensures that it will remain a classic masterpiece and will not date. Detailed ‘coining’ on the render, and architectural mouldings added to a cantilevered section of the home add to the European influences as does the ‘provincial’ roof tiles that were imported from France. Travertine tiling used extensively around the pool and alfresco area has also been used as feature cladding on walls and chimneys.

Utilities such as solar panelling, hot water systems and air conditioning units have all been cleverly concealed in the roof line so as to not detract from the appearance of the home and a purpose built room has been included on the upper level, specifically for roof access. As you may expect, this home is also extensively wired with intercoms, security cameras and other modern conveniences. Overall this is a magnificent showcase home that confirms the unquestionable reputation of Pirone as one of Perth’s premier luxury home builders.

The exceptional attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship that Pirone Builders are renowned for is evident in the cellar and a large library which have been fitted with custom built floor to ceiling cabinetry.

An official judge for the Housing Industry Association, Rob Maughan built a solid reputation working with other leading industry brands before forming Maughan Building Company in 2009. The accolade’s he has received are a testament to his expertise and the process he follows with every new home he builds. The philosophy at Maughan Building Company is simple, says Rob, “Building your dream home is a journey and every client takes a different route, my job is to make that journey as enjoyable and satisfying as possible”.

Rob is personally involved in every project and works closely with clients from the brief stage to completion of the project. He brings his expertise in passive solar energy and design strategies that make optimal use of the site to every project. And in MBC’s signature style, aims to inspire clients with contemporary design and cutting edge architectural elements. The design process however is then left to unfold organically over a period of several weeks. It is through this process of close collaboration with clients and through an open exchange of ideas that Rob believes ultimate outcomes are achieved for all his clients.

A History of Building Excellence Since 1956, the name Zorzi has become synonymous with high quality, craftsman built homes Australia wide. Zorzi Builders was founded on an ethos of hard work, and inspired by a family passion and the never ending pursuit of excellence in delivering the highest quality design and construction of new homes. Dating back over nearly 60 years, the Zorzi passion started when Corado Zorzi first saw the work of Andrea Palladio, while working in the family business in Italy in the early 1900’s. Born in 1576, many consider Andrea Palladio to be the grandfather of residential Architecture, having created such iconic residences as the Villa Valmarana ai Nani near Vincenza, in 1670. Quality, craftsmanship and design have always been the signature of Zorzi. From humble beginnings, providing house and land packages, to the exclusive, custom designed homes of today which have become the benchmark in residential quality construction.

Since their inception, Zorzi has always strived to lead the market with innovative, unique solutions. This pioneering spirit is underpinned by the timeless values which are at the heart of every Zorzi home. Elegant grandeur can only be achieved through considered design and the melding of quality materials with the highest standards of workmanship. Zorzi homes are distinguished by their contemporary designs and an attention to detail evident in every aspect of the home – from the concrete and brickwork through to the fixtures, fittings and finishes. Whether it is designed in conjunction with Zorzi or with your own architect, our focus is delivering a seamless, cost conscience outcome.

Grandwood by Zorzi As the Zorzi brand grew so too did the value of the projects it undertook. With a growing brand and affluent clientele the importance of evolving into a multi-generational building company was recognised. Grandwood by Zorzi was established in 1994 as a response to expanding client families looking to build at all different levels of style and budget, changing community tastes, trends and styles. Grandwood quickly demonstrated the value of the Zorzi heritage by winning the HIA Golden Key for best display home in Perth with their first display home, and then the National award for building the best home in Australia, a few years later. This is an accolade many builders do not achieve in a lifetime, let alone the first years of operation.

Grandwood by Zorzi has been built on a reputation for producing outstanding homes that encapsulate the essence of individuality and style. Underpinned by the Zorzi master brand, Grandwood epitomises the Zorzi values in quality and craftsmanship, leveraging this to deliver a range of homes that are accessible across a broader range of price points by streamlining the process down to a seamless art form. Grandwood Homes provides clients with flexible custom and customised solutions to suit individual needs, unique sites and a personalised service at every stage of the building process. This includes direct access to directors and a full time builder on site as well as a dedicated project manager, and interior design consultants. Today the Zorzi Group is a true bespoke builder focused on the design and construction of luxury family homes of all sizes and budgets.

Lock Up & Leave Luxury This stunning open plan home in the Perth suburb of Dalkeith encompasses over 900 square meters of luxury living and has been built for a repeat client of Zorzi. As frequent travelers, the client’s brief was for a home that elegantly combined a rich tapestry of natural textural finishes where they could incorporate various pieces of art and furnishings collected over their travels but was also low maintenance.

Zorzi combined travertine natural stone flooring and walls, to create a contrast of earthy tones that provided a neutral palette for furnishings. To address the low maintenance requirement, additional steps needed to be taken in areas such as the exterior timber ceilings where each sheet was sent to French polishers to be lacquered and stained rather than using typical prefinished boards. Automation plays a large part in the features of this home. A central system controls everything

from the drapes, interior and exterior lighting, under-floor heating system, air conditioning and security cameras, to the operation of the pool and spa. A lift is integrated into the home, and runs from the basement up to the top level. Despite maintaining a casual, family friendly ambience the luxurious finishes and exceptional craftsmanship that you’d expect of a Zorzi home is evident throughout. In the kitchen the lacquered kitchen cabinetry is trimmed with Japanese Sen timber that was pattern matched

both lengthways and corners. Drawers and cupboards have been motorized so as to open and close automatically with just a nudge. The glass sliding doors that separate the alfresco and dining areas - each over 3.2 meters wide, open seamlessly and disappear like magic, invisibly stored in the wall cavities.

Flexibility & Function Built as an ‘Appealathon’ home for charity, this expansive 700 sqm home in Dalkeith, has stunning street appeal and a resort-like feel that continues throughout the home. Considerable thought went into the home’s design to create a home where the rooms can be re-purposed as the family grows and changes, with consideration for the home accommodating several generations. Designed to accommodate a large family the luxurious finishes are extensive. From the moment you enter through the custom timber entry doors, you are struck by the void, clad with fossilized marble and a timber paneled ceiling. The home is abundant with other quality materials including

Donnybrook stone, marble, granite and timber which combine to lend an earthy, natural tonal palette to the home. The ground floor consists of large communal living spaces, opening to a large alfresco area that blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living. A feature of the home is a separate building, originally designed as a gym, but which could serve as an office or self-contained guest suite. The upper floor contains the majority of the bedrooms including a master suite which spectacular in its size as well as its appointments and finishes, is again reminiscent of a luxury resort.

Working in conjunction with local council, the Heritage Council, and other heritage advisors the project to restore the Federation Queen Anne style home was many years in completion. Originally built over 120 years ago on a large parcel of landing overlooking the Indian Ocean the home was in considerable disrepair when work began. Wherever possible repairs were made to the original materials such as limestone

walls, ceilings and ceiling roses. For the new areas of the home that were extended to incorporate additional living area, replicas were made and sourced so as to match the original detail of the home. From the marble flooring to custom-made period style cabinetry and the ornate ceilings, Le Fanu is once again a beautiful landmark home that will enhance the WA coastline for another 120 years.

Luxury Set in Stone The main challenge for Grandwood by Zorzi in the construction of this stylish Dalkeith family home, was creating a design that incorporated all the requests of the client into a single story residence. The home includes three separate living spaces, a central open plan kitchen and dining area with seamless transition to an equally large alfresco area, a gym, a master suite of resort like proportions and a pool with sufficient garden area for the children to play in to name a few. Grandwood delivered a sophisticated home that is both functional and luxurious in detail. A home this family will grow into.

To meet a further request of the client for a home that was a statement in quality without being ostentatious, Grandwood have used an abundance of natural stone and timber throughout the home, including Drylane Alpine stone cladding to the alfresco fireplace and timber paneled ceilings. As a result the sleek contemporary lines are softened by the organic materials, creating an earthy palette and a warm and inviting ambience throughout.

Renovated in Style A complete modernisation of an older Shenton Park home was the objective in this Grandwood by Zorzi renovation. Incorporating high-end finishes such as marble, stainless steel, glass, porcelain and veneer, the brief was to redefine the character of the existing home whilst creating a luxurious and impressive modern interior. The home was first taken back to an empty shell so that interior spaces could be

redefined. A concrete slab was added to the upper story and the balcony and master suite were remodelled into a sanctuary that would take in the parkland views and was complete with walk in wardrobe and luxurious bathroom. A sitting room with fireplace was also added to the upper level. Downstairs kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces were refit to include marble and veneer finishes and backlit lighting. A new pool and timber decking were also added to the front of the home to take advantage of park views.

Weststyle Design & Development blurred the lines between old/new and indoor/outdoor to create a distinctive space in this exceptional Inglewood renovation and extension of a classic home. Created by architect Gavin Hestelow and interior designer Hayley Prendiville, the home meets the expectations of the clients who requested a modern look complimentary to the existing structure. The result is a transformation that retains the original character of the home while providing a contrasting modern open plan layout surrounded by preserved trees and greenery for privacy and visual appeal.

The build time was unusually efficient due to the hybrid aspect of masonry and framed construction. A special consideration was a piece of glass measuring 2.5 x 4m to frame an original tree that needed to be craned in and maneuvered into position with specialized machinery due to the tight work space. Using high quality materials featuring a range of textures and finishes resulted in an aesthetically balanced outcome. Handmade recycled face brick exteriors contrast rendered walls and the original Tuck Point aesthetic. Exposed zincalume roofing and striking Jarrah floorboards extend from the existing home to the renovation.

An innovative kitchen with dramatic minimalistic appeal is the centerpiece of the home. Seamless custom colour lacquered cabinetry with a bifold and pocketing door system hiding the appliances, prep area, refrigerator and pantry rebrands the traditional kitchen and incorporates it into the living space. The modern aesthetic was achieved with outstanding materials such as Calacatta Michaelangelo marble on the island bench.

Sub-Zero Sub-zero integrated products have no visible grills or hinges, making it possible for your refrigeration to be indistinguishable from other cabinets and providing the ability to separate units and place them where they are most convenient for you – eg: vegetable crisper drawers under work benches whilst freezers are upright by the pantry. The 610mm wide ICBIC-24FI all-freezer column provides 338 litres of storage space surrounded by a dedicated cooling system engineered to keep air dry to prevent frost and freezer burn. An automatic icemaker includes a “max ice” command, which allows for increased on-demand production of purified ice by up to 30 percent, for 24 hours. The Sub-Zero ICBIC-24R - the first 610 mm all-refrigerator column from SubZero - provides 352 litres of storage, with a built-in anti-microbial air-purification system based on technology developed by NASA. This system scrubs the air of ethylene gas — an organic compound emitted by produce that hastens food spoilage — as well as mould, viruses and bacteria every 20 minutes. Another advanced food-preservation feature is the high-humidity, lower-temperature crisper drawers, which provide the perfect conditions for storing fresh produce. Sub-zero Integrated Column All Freezer (ICBIC-24FI) - RRP $18,995 Integrated All Column Refrigerator (ICBIC-30RID) - RRP $17,995

Miele Miele sets the benchmark for luxury refrigeration with the flagship range of fully integrated refrigeration appliances, aptly named the MasterCool series. Bringing European design to Australia, the modular column system allows you to configure combinations of fridge and freezer units to suit your individual preferences and maximize storage space. MasterFresh drawers allows the storage of food at the precise temperature and humidity requirements to ensure food is kept as fresh as possible for up to 3 times longer than normal. To use simply select the drawer location and food item type from the menu system and Miele’s signature electronics manage the rest. A unique benefit to MasterCool refrigerators are that the TouchControls have been placed ergonomically at waist height, so users will never have

to stretch to reach the controls at the top of the unit, which stands at more than two metres tall. For WA’s climate, ice and water features are usually high on the fridge want list. Miele refrigeration that include ice and water units have been tested and WaterMark certified ensuring that any water that comes in contact with internal components of the unit will not be contaminated. Ice making capacity is up to 150 pieces per day with a 3.2kg of ice storage capacity. Plenty of ice for every drink the family needs in a day. Prices start from from $11,499.00

The

Art WINE

of

Storing, Pouring, Serving and Drinking

The incredible growth experienced by the wine industry world-wide has made it possible for people of all incomes to enjoy good wines regularly and inexpensively. So, why is there still a pervasive fear of wine ‘handling’ and etiquette? The standard and traditional ways of storing, pouring, serving and drinking wines are all simply based on good sense and an understanding of the way that wine reacts to heat, light and air. Even if you don’t understand how the elements can affect wine, by following some simple rules, you can enjoy serving wine, without the fear of ‘doing it wrong’.

150

CUSTOM HOMES

Storing your Wine – Cool, Sideways and Out of the Light We could add, ‘for as long as possible’ to this subheading. There are some people who seem to think that a wine should be brought out of the cellar two days before they are planning to drink it and then left in an upright position. We’re scratching our heads and trying to figure out the logic in that thinking. If you are talking about red wines, then this doesn’t make much sense as it only takes about an hour to bring a bottle of wine up to room temperature*, which is the temperature in which reds are traditionally drunk. And, all wines should also be left in a horizontal position, to avoid the cork drying out. Approximately 3 hours is a good length of time to leave from removing the wine from storage to decanting and serving it. This will give any sediment you’ve stirred up in the process of moving it a chance to settle.

Climate controlled storage options such as Vintec Transtherm wine cabinets will ensure that your wines are always stored in the perfect conditions for preservation or maturation. For a white wine, it’s even simpler. White wines should be served lightly chilled. You can leave them in the cellar until you’re just about to chill and serve them. The Optimum Drinking Temperature of Wine You may have noticed above the asterisk above alongside ‘room temperature’. That’s because the term is one that’s open to a little interpretation. ‘Room temperature’ refers to the rooms of European cities long ago, long before central heating. Back then the temperature of the

rooms averaged around 15-18 degrees. The room temperature of 24-25 degrees common in Australia is not conducive to wine. So, a short time in the fridge before serving is recommended for red wines as well. Safe Storage for Your Wine A wine cellar should be kept at 12-14 degrees Celsius, should offer darkness or at least nothing more than indirect light whenever possible and should be kept at a humidity range of around 70 percent. All wine should be stored in the cellar on its side. This is so that the wine in the bottle can keep the cork moist. A cork is like a sponge in that it swells up when moist and this keeps the bottle tightly sealed and prevents any air from seeping into it. Air is the absolute enemy of wine unless you’re just about to serve it. The reason for the high humidity in the cellar is also to keep the cork moist from the outside of the bottle.

Should I Decant My Wines? The short answer to this is: It depends. White wines don’t really need to be decanted. However, all wines benefit from a chance to breathe, and you can certainly decant white wines for this purpose as well as for the aesthetics of serving it from a nicer looking vessel. Red wines also don’t actually have to be decanted. Reds develop sediment as part of their aging process. While this sediment is absolutely safe to drink, doesn’t affect the taste, and some take it as proof of a properly-aged wine, it can look pretty unsightly in a glass. A lot of people like to decant the wine when they’re serving it to guests. To decant a red wine properly, simply tilt it at a 45-degree angle when pouring into the decanter. By placing a small candle underneath the bottle, you can see when the sediment is close to reaching the neck of the bottle. Again, wines do benefit from a chance to be

exposed to air just before they’re drunk. So, if you’re not planning on decanting, then open the bottle and give it a few minutes before pouring. What Wine to Serve When? This is generally where all the arguments start. The rules that your parents and grandparents probably grew up with have been unceremoniously rubbished in the new age of the culinary arts. The new rule is simply whatever you and your guests prefer. Really! That being said, there are some recommendations to start you off in finding your perfect match of food and wine. A good place to start with lighter fish and white poultry dishes are white wines like Pinot Grigio, Verdelho, Semillon, Gewurtztraminer and Chenin Blanc. Moving to heartier fish dishes like salmon, Ahi tuna and swordfish, any of the afore-mentioned whites will do nicely, as well as some of the

lighter reds such as Pinot Noir, and Shiraz. These lighter reds are also traditionally served with game fowl like geese, duck and pheasant. The heavier meat dishes like beef, pork, lamb and venison are really complemented by the ‘big reds’ like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Burgundy and Chianti. The fatty, rich flavours of these meats really complement the tannins of the wines. Cheese plates usually favor white wines, though this is, of course, open to debate. And most of the sweeter Madeira and ports wines go well with chocolates and desserts. As the culinary arts have given us new and exciting tastes and dining experiences on an almost daily basis, hard and fast rules for wine pairing have been thrown out the window, to everyone’s benefit. While it’s good to try out the traditional pairings in order to learn the strengths and weaknesses behind each type of wine, you should think of it, particularly in this day and age, only as a place to start.

TECE has grown by asking the right questions…

Can we do it better, faster, more attractively?

TECElux is the toilet terminal for all toilet functions of today—and tomorrow. Press and flush was yesterday. The toilet of today can do so much more: Rinse and blow dry, purify the air, and flush automatically. But often, the aesthetics are sacrificed for other benefits. TECE has now created a form that unites all functions. TECElux places the system components behind the wall, where they are invisible. An extremely flat glass facing closes the inspection opening and conceals the cistern. The connections for water and power are concealed behind the glass facing as well as optional odour trap and height adjustments.

Features of the TECElux include: ■ LED “sen-Touch” flushing system-the buttons illuminate as you approach the terminal & flush operates electronically ■ An invisible ”ceramic-Air” air freshening/odour extracting device located behind the glass panel ■ The “m-Lift” function allowing you to adjust the height of the ceramic pan, even after installation ■ Easy access panel to allow upgrades and maintenance on all these features inside the wall

With its simple aesthetics, TECElux blends in beautifully with the architecture of any bathroom.

TECEnow flush plates TECEnow with a height of only 5mm the TECEnow flush plate has a sleek and stylish profile and the simple rectangular flush plate fits directly to the TECE cistern without additional fittings, so that the flush plate is all that is visible above the ceramics. Available in Chrome, White, Black and Matte Chrome. The flush plate also acts as a cover for the inspection opening, so that the technical components can be accessed quickly and easily hidden behind the stylish fascia.

A Hidden oasis

Visiting this stunning property you’d be surprised to learn that at one time it was an old pine plantation in complete disarray. Purchased 15 years back by the current owners, it was re-imagined as Onyesha Spa – which was a finalist this year for the World Luxury Spa award, and it’s not surprising why. Onyesha is a relaxing Balinese-style day spa accessed through a canopy of lush shade trees and dotted with floral gardens and waterfalls sounds that offers a private oasis to escape to and unwind unlike any other spa venue in Perth.

Originally purchased as a private residence, the idea to create a spa was sparked by visitors who came and were reluctant to leave the owners tranquil surroundings. From the moment you drive through the gates and begin the 300 metre drive to the main building there is a feeling as though you’re entering another world. In fact, despite being just 30 minutes from the CBD and only 5 minutes from Joondalup the natural ecosystem that has been created at Onyesha provides the spa its own microclimate, with temperatures averaging five degrees cooler in summer than surrounding areas.

We found guests who visited us didn’t want to leave, the spa was a way for us to share the beauty & tranquillity of the property not just with friends and family but the public. — Sally, Onyesha Owner Considerable work had been undertaken by the previous owner, a landscape architect who created at the centre of the property a beautiful lake which spans a full acre. However with the view of creating the many private areas that make up the treatment rooms, a substantial amount of additional time and resources have been put into the property since, by Onyesha’s owners. The island in the middle of the lake was cleared, a charming bridge was built, and the island is now the site of a delightful gazebo and rose gardens. Visitors discover the Rainforest Pavilion hidden away in the bushes by wandering along a stepping-stone path under the rainforest canopy. Across the wooden bridge is the secluded thatched pavilion graced with golden Balinese doors within view of the lake, and a lovely tea garden has been created near the main building for after treatment refreshments.

Onyesha Spa has a world of wildlife, fauna and flora surrounding a variety of inviting rooms and facilities. The koi in the lake have been around longer than their owners, and spa visitors enjoy the sight of beautiful birds such as blue wrens, canaries and black cockatoos that feed on the pine cones. A full-time gardener cares for the established Camellias, 15-foot Azaleas and a 40-foot Gingko Biloba tree with a distinctive fan-shaped leaf that rarely grows in Perth conditions. Visitors to Onyesha Spa are invited to indulge their mind, body and soul every day except Sunday and Monday with massages, facials, body treatments and complete full day spa packages. Funky Monkey Bars is the brainchild of Shane Roberts, who back in 2009 resorted to designing his own set of monkey bars for his two young daughters after failing to find what he wanted in pre-fabricated sets. Bombarded by requests from neighbours and friends to build one for them too, Shane developed Funky Monkey Bars into a business and in 2014, Shane was joined by Colin Burdle, a structural engineer from the UK who saw further possibilities for the concept in both additional flexibility and features that now make ‘Funky Monkey Bar’s fully customisable to the requirements of each individual family. The design and quality of the Funk Monkey Bar playgrounds have caused the company sales to skyrocket and their Yangebup, Perth-based business has recently been awarded the Business News Rising Stars Award, recognised as one of the Top-10 fastest growing companies in Western Australia. With their quality construction and flexible designs it’s no wonder these modular sets of colourful monkey bars are turning the heads of practical parents who are looking to get kids outside and active.

A New Millenium of

ARCHITECTURAL GLASS ART When most people think about architectural glass art, they envisage the stained glass of old churches and Victorian-era buildings. However local glass artisan and Creative Director of Perth’s Tradition Stained Glass, Kim Fitzpatrick is putting a whole new spin on the industry with stunning contemporary work that is enhancing modern homes and commercial spaces.

184

CUSTOM HOMES

As a third generation glass artist, taught by his grandfather, Kim has a long history working with traditional stained glass methods. His Perth based business, TSG (Tradition Stained Glass), is one of very few with the expertise to both replicate and restore work such as ecclesiastical pieces in the age-old method in which they were created. As such, TSG have forged a reputation as Perth’s premier glass artisans regularly undertaking work for local cathedrals, churches and other heritage buildings. Kim’s inherent passion for both art and glass as a medium, have driven him to develop his skills into more modern techniques, working now with fused glass to create beautiful pieces that are also being integrated architecturally into residential and commercial buildings in a contemporary manner. Unlike traditional glass art methods, where glass is either hand painted and kiln fired to essentially bake the paint into the glass, or glass is cut into various shapes and soldered together with lead, fused glass is the art of combining various coloured glass together in a super hot kiln until the colours blend together to create one piece. Fused glass differs in its ability to express abstract shapes and soft, free-form contours and colours, merging together in an organic and fluid manner. Mastering the technique so that the various glass and colours blend for a specific desired effect has taken Kim considerable time and effort, but the results are nothing short of spectacular with the some of the ‘near unbreakable’ pieces being installed with backlit LED lighting for dramatic effect. With this application, a new era of architectural glass-art emerges in the form of colourful murals, water features, and unique and ambient lighting that can all be custom designed to suit the individual needs of the client. TSG are currently working on two x 2 metre by 1 meter fused art glass installations for Parliament House. Other work by Kim involves combining timber with fused glass in sculptural pieces. A recent collaborative effort between Kim and indigenous artist Peter Farmer in a unique surfboard design has recently been purchased by the National Gallery in Canberra. More examples of some of the exceptional work by TSG can be viewed on their website: www.traditionstainedglass.com.au And at their studio / gallery located at: Unit 10, 6 McNeece Place O’Connor, Western Australia 6163 Ph: 08 9430 4707 E: admin@traditionstainedglass.com.au

The Fantastic & Real

JANA VODESILBARUFFI

Realism and fantasy combine in a unique art style Jana VodesilBaruffi calls Fantastic Realism. Recognisable forms, many of them of the human face and body, transform into hypnotizing figures that combine seamlessly with the elements of nature. Through the dynamic imagination of the artist a woman’s face materialises from rocks in a pool of water, a man’s arms evolve into tree limbs, and the full form of a woman becomes intertwined with the heavens and the earth through her arterial system. It is impossible to look away.

After emigrating to Australia in the 80’s Czech born, Jana developed her technical skills as a serious artist while working on realistic drawings and paintings. Her fascination with faces is evident in her Portraits, another primary area of Jana’s work where she interprets facial expressions that go beyond the visible and reveal the character of the subject. For “Permanent Impressions,” a benefit for the Leukemia Foundation, Jana created a 50 portrait collection celebrating women of WA in 2013. The result is a book of the collection that won the bronze medal in the Best Regional Non-Fiction category of the 2014 Independent Publisher Book Awards in New York.

A third area of Jana’s work is her Visual Diaries which focus on beautiful images from her extensive art tours around the globe. These works capture the essence of destinations such as Italian countryside, streetscapes in the Bahamas and Prague, and the natural beauty of New Zealand. Her lifelong interest in art has led to an awardwinning career and numerous exhibitions around the world. Vodesil-Baruffi is a regular contributor to the Doug Moran, Archibald and Black Swan portraiture competitions. This year marked Jana’s fifth time as a Black Swan Prize finalist. In 2013 Belmont Business Enterprise Centre presented Jana with the “Most creative award” in its small business category. In 2014, she launched the contemporary Australian Surrealists movement with exhibitions at the Metamorphosis Art Gallery and together with her husband Kevin Baruffi, established the Not for Profit organisation “Paintings for a Cause” with the purpose of to promoting artists and art as a vehicle for fund raising for various worldwide causes. Jana Vodesil-Baruffi continues to combine her art with involvement in the global issues with a new collection of Fantastic Realism paintings based on the oppression of women in the developing world. Transforming

SPACES

Imagine… sipping a glass of wine in your garden whilst enjoying the surrounding views of the Tuscan countryside, watching wildlife meander across the distant savannah or boats bobbing up and down by a quiet sea-side village? It may sound idealistic but these are the transformations that one Perth artist, is making to suburban backyards with murals that are turning ordinary walls and spaces into whimsical oasis’s. With alfrescos now being such an important extension of our home’s living area, it’s natural that home-owners are wanting to decorate and beautify outdoor areas in the same manner as they would interior spaces. Starting with a project for a friend, word of mouth has spread and Artist, Laura Farnhill is now doing regular commissions, covering up bare and ugly walls and fences and turning them into whimsical scenes.

190

CUSTOM HOMES

Studying interior design before discovering her passion for painting Laura gained considerable recognition as well as several art awards for her definitively West Australian landscapes. Her work encompassed iconic scenes such as the crystal clear waters of Rottnest Island bays through to the rugged outback of The Kimberley’s.

After recently closing her Melbourne gallery ‘Blank Canvas’ in Richmond’s Bridge Road to return to Perth in order to be closer to her family, Laura is enjoying her new ‘wall canvas’ work. In some ways it’s more satisfying than painting on a typical canvas as I see the client’s vision come to life. One client requested a village scene on an exterior wall of her home and she was so excited when it was completed, she said it transported her back to her childhood, growing up in a small Italian town. Those sorts of comments are very rewarding.

In some ways it’s more satisfying than painting on a typical canvas as I see the client’s vision come to life. I also frequently cover up what was an ordinary or even unattractive wall or fence and transform it into something aesthetically beautiful that the home owner can then be proud of.” Maintaining her passion for landscapes, Laura recently held a solo exhibition at Little Creatures in Fremantle. Into the Mystic with David Giles With 42 solo exhibitions , and dozens of art awards under his belt you’d be excused for expecting David Giles to be one of those stereotypical, somewhat affected ‘artiste’ types. However, nothing could be further from the truth for this passionate artist & gallery owner, who despite being heralded as one of Australia’s most exciting contemporary painters, chooses to give back to the art community that he so loves. Crediting his twenty year career to a near death drowning experience, the abstract work that has followed has been consistent in its appeal; largely due to David’s ability to create visually entrancing works with a spiritual depth that seem to permeate the ambience of the room. The unique qualities of David’s work are more understood when you hear David talk about the

experience that came to define his work. In the ABC documentary titled “How Art Changed My Life: David Giles,” Giles recalls the event, “In 1993 I was swimming and got taken out by a rip, getting tumbled by the big breakers off the Southern Ocean…I was in a full blown panic, at first, and then I just had this thought that if I don’t relax into this I will stay in this same sense of panic forever. So, I totally relaxed into it and it became a really beautiful, mystical, revelation-ary experience.” The artwork that has followed seems to have recaptured that mystical experience with a spiritual tranquility that continues to be a major theme in his art twenty years later. The eternally meditative mood present in Giles’ work has seen his paintings grace the walls of corporate lobbies, hotels and private collections across the globe.

Giles now aims to give back to the art community that has supported him throughout his 20 year career via an educational endeavor called “The Freedom School of Painting. Based at the David Giles Gallery in High St, Fremantle, The Freedom School works to empower individuals to follow their artistic passion and provides an outlet for artist to display their work. The Freedom School is a place for artistic development where he mentors upwards of 32 students. Seven students from the program have so far gone onto become award-winning artists themselves. Wherever you turn, natural light surrounds you. This has been achieved through extra ceiling height and extensive glazing. As with most of the rest of the home, glass doors in each of the bedrooms provide direct access to the outside, enhancing the connection with the landscape. This is particularly interior living areas to the alfresco area completely providing an outstanding area for entertaining all year round.

Many locally sourced materials were used in the construction of the home including the limestone walls which called for precise craftsmanship by local experts who had been building with limestone for generations. The warm hue of the area’s weather-resistant garapa hardwood enhances cabinetry, handrails, doors, windows and decking and much of the wood furniture found in the home has also been constructed from garapa. The blues of the sea and the browns of the

wood are replicated in local “pasta tiles” placed on accent walls throughout the home. These mosaics were designed by the client and manufactured in Merida by a Spanish technique imported to Mexico hundreds of years ago. The process involves pouring thick sandy concrete into a mould, enhanced by a colourful design and are then pressed and polished to bring out the colour. The term “pasta tiles” comes from the pasty consistency of the ingredients.
