Smeg’s genuine design choice We share love with family and friends, live for food and entertaining and do it with style. For nearly 70 years, Smeg has been adorning homes with the most elegant appliances, each designed and engineered to bring joy like a work of art. And because beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Smeg offers genuine design choice for individuals to choose an aesthetic style that reflects their own, personal taste. Smeg’s three architecturally designed collections, Classic, Linear and Victoria, will soon be joined by Dolce Stil Novo. With four distinctive aesthetic styles, Smeg has the widest choice to match every conceivable décor. Add to this the Classic and Victoria freestanding offerings, beautiful 50s style Small Appliances and FAB refrigeration, and it’s easy to punctuate and personalise your home with designer pieces from Smeg.

Classic Collection

Linear Collection

In 1985, world-renowned architect Guido Canali developed the Classic Collection, a design that pre-dated the stainless steel built-in appliance trend. Emulated across the decades, the Classic Collection has endured for over thirty years punctuated by its inimitable signature – the distinctive and beautiful “Canali” knob.

In 2005 Smeg developed the full glass door Linear Collection designed by architect Mirco Zanini. Linear’s design is based in fundamental elements and principles of design – line, shape, space, colour, balance and symmetry with ergonomic form. Available in lustrous silver, black and white, Linear by Smeg’s complexity is expressed in minimal simplicity.

Victoria Collection

50s Style Collection

Smeg’s recent Victoria Collection has irresistible nostalgic familiarity and surprising contemporary appeal. Victoria’s sumptuous curves, eye-catching style and radiant enamelled finish in black and panna (cream) is today shaping trends in kitchen design. Its versatility makes it equally at home in a country, Shaker or Hamptons style home as it is in a New York-style warehouse apartment.

Smeg’s 1950s-style FAB refrigerator has inspired luxe collaborations with doyens of fashion. At EuroCucina 2016 in Milan, Smeg released 100 hand-painted Dolce & Gabbana FAB fridges. As the only brand to offer a total kitchen solution – from fit-out to small appliances, Smeg is excited to announce a new collaboration between Dolce & Gabbana and Smeg. ‘Sicily is my Love’ was unveiled at Salone del Mobile di Milano, 2017, bringing Dolce & Gabbana’s unmistakable modern classicism to the benchtop, and high-end fashion into the home. #DGSMEG

The Santorini Like the cliff top homes of Santorini, the building site for this modern family home was at the highest possible point of Mosman Park’s most exclusive enclave. As a result, maximising the spectacular, panoramic views was an obvious priority and the home therefore features an “upside down” design, with the sleek and stylish open-plan kitchen, living, dining and alfresco areas located on the third (uppermost) level of the home. Floor to ceiling commercial, double glazed windows, stacking glass doors leading to the alfresco and an absence of structural columns, ensures that the spectacular views that stretch from Freshwater Bay past the city remain completely unobstructed.

The Pacchetto Loosely translated to ‘the complete package’, The Pacchetto has been designed to appeal to couples looking to downsize to a compact home for easy maintenance whilst retaining all the hallmark qualities of a larger home. With two ensuite bedrooms and a powder room the open plan living areas feel generous in size. Timber flooring, lacquered cabinets, under floor heating and stacking sliders to the alfresco add a luxurious touch. Uniquely, this home also features a separate, fully self-contained apartment above the 3-car garage, perfect for a live-in carer, guest accommodation or as a teenagers retreat. The apartment may also be leased for additional income, since all services are totally separate from the main home making it an appealing option for retirees.

A large portico entry welcomes you into the home where you’re immediately struck by a feeling of spaciousness, largely created by double height ceilings made possible via a second storey void. Defining it as the ‘centre’ of the home the functional, floorplan has been designed around an expansive covered alfresco area that overlooks the designer swimming pool and landscaped gardens. Continuity of luxurious stone flooring creates a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces and stacking glass doors enable the spaces to be completely opened up, effectively doubling the floor area when entertaining. Creating an architecturally striking focal point within the home is a large angular window to the custom designed wine cellar, which has been cleverly lit to create an artistic geometric design and emit a soft ambient light visible inside and out.

iconic australian artist

Charles Blackman Turns 90 Esteemed Australian artist Charles Blackman OBE, who turns 90 in August this year, first came to prominence in the Melbourne art world of the mid-1940s with his dreamlike images tinged with mystery and foreboding. Best known for his Schoolgirl, Avonsleigh and Alice in Wonderland series of the 1950s, Blackman’s career culminated in a major retrospective of his work in 1993.

72

WA CUSTOM HOMES

Now in frail health, the artist’s affairs are managed by the Charles Blackman Trust, which manages the sale of works still owned by the artist himself to ensure his expenses are taken care of. The Bromley & Co galleries in Daylesford and Windsor, in Victoria, are among the few places entrusted with the sale of these artworks. Blackman has been a mentor to younger artist David Bromley throughout his career. In 2002, David was an Archibald Prize finalist with his portrait of Charles, an homage to a man whose iconic work epitomises a definitive time in Australian art history. In recent years, David’s admiration for Charles and his work has seen a further collaboration whereby, under the authority of the Charles Blackman Foundation, David has worked with a selection of Charles’ artwork, in particular his series of ink drawings on paper, to colour, collage and ‘reimagine’ the visuals through his own colourscape. The resulting works, the Blackman by Bromley collection, bring to light Charles’ drawings spanning from 2006 to the present with a playful flair and imagination, with part proceeds from the sale of these works playing a part in the support and care of the older artist as his health began to fail. David has always admired Charles’ no-nonsense nature and his ability to view the world and his surroundings as though peering down the rabbit hole, much like the Alice in Wonderland figures that feature prominently in his work. “I’ve spent a big part of my life endeavouring to turn dreams into reality,”says David, “and working with Charles is an honour so great that I would never have dared to dream it could be possible. I have had the good fortune to spend a lot of time with Blackman’s work and the opportunity to see in the flesh much of the last decade’s work.

“As I had done with my father, I mourned the loss of the vital expressive, surreal work of the Blackman I had revered for so many years. “Then, after years of seeing these works unfold I started to realise I was doing as I had done with my father, not being able to see the potency and poignancy of this stage and I was missing out on seeing this side of the man and his art. When I removed the veil from my eyes and from my thinking, I was able to see this new world unfold. “I now truly see this recent work and have entered once again into a “rabbit’s hole” type of experience that he has taken me into the past that was staring me in the face. Characters and stories ever present in his surreal mind, outpouring despite frailty. A determined hand connected to an imagination ever fertile, ever determined, making art, as usual, for his life. “As for his art, despite his condition, it can never be truly closed from memory, autobiography.”

74

WA CUSTOM HOMES

Charles said to me once, a relationship with art is about the conversation and interaction you feel and have with a particular piece or body of art and then the conversation that the art has back with you.. BUTTERFLIES IN THE TUMMY / FIREWORKS IN THE EYES… A TWO WAY CONNECTION HAS BEEN FORGED …this is what I have with this decade of Blackman work—magic in a world of Charlie’s making.” — David Bromley

Uncompromised Quality At a time of life when many empty nesters settle into the low maintenance needs of apartment living for the long haul, the owners of this new Applecross home left behind spectacular South Perth views in order to accommodate their growing family of grandchildren. The couple had high expectations for a sophisticated home and provided an extensive and detailed brief of requirements. They requested a modern, elegant “pad” for the couple to enjoy with a separate wing for visiting children, along with extensive indoor and outdoor living spaces for the family to all enjoy together. But what eventuated to be the design inspiration for many features of the

home, was the preservation of a beautiful mature Jacaranda tree that graced the property. Renowned for building homes of exceptional craftsmanship Pirone Builders were engaged to construct the John Colliere designed home. The distinctive “C” shape helped to answer the client brief by separating living zones with a central courtyard containing alfresco kitchen, a sparkling pool and of course the spectacular Jacaranda, that became so central to the design of the home that the grandchildren dubbed it The Tree House. Engaging sight lines were created with art focus points and views of the pool and tree replacing the couple’s former waterfront outlook. WA CUSTOM HOMES

The striking elevation features an elegant interplay of reconstituted timber, nickel silver aluminum, stone and white off-form concrete. Privacy issues were solved with modern slip forms featured in the front elevation. The largest guest suite turns its back on the street, with the exception of a long, low slit window that provides yacht club views and a private terrace. A tall vertical form features active louvres so the other two first floor bedrooms can control light, view and privacy remotely.

78

WA CUSTOM HOMES

A strong appreciation of the Jacaranda tree generated a multitude of ideas for the home. Variations in timber graining, differing textures, shadow effects and lighting sources all found their way into the new construction. The Jacaranda also inspired themes of physical and emotional comfort of the home, which is, after all, why the couple chose to move back to the suburbs.

Pirone Builders worked closely with architects and structural engineers on the steel work that is featured extensively throughout the sculptural forms of the home. The Tree House required low pitched rooves, high ceilings, and large, column-free spans to maximize volumes within height restrictions. Louvred shading required light and strong support systems.

Sculptural forms are illuminated by striking night lighting, and an array of internal and external lighting solutions contributes to the enjoyment of the home. Sophisticated lighting highlights the front elevation, artwork, garden, entry lobby, pool, and, of course, the magnificent Jacaranda tree.

The Tree House features passive and active environmental and shading systems. Insulated floor slabs, external walls and ceilings and the extensive use of double glazing add to the home’s energy-efficiency. PV cells fuel the air conditioning, floor heating, reverse osmosis and pool filtration systems. The outdoor living space features an active roof louvre system that allows for shelter from heat in summer and ingress of sun in winter to the TV room and study. External louvres in the lounge and dining room provide sun and glare control. Specialising in the design and construction of highly specified, luxury, custom homes and prestige commercial properties, Pirone Builders are responsible for building some of Perth’s most spectacular homes. Combining over 70 years of experience in the industry, Mario & Adrian are personally involved in each project, overseeing their team of highly skilled tradesman with a dedication to exceptional craftsmanship and the company ethos, ‘Built on Quality’. Water Based Playground A riverside location inspired the architecture of this beautiful new home in Nedlands by Giorgi Homes. The architectural design of this home on the banks of the Swan River takes full advantage of its position with the river being the catalyst for in-built water features and a custom wave-like curved roofline. Positioned on a large 1561 square metre block, the home is a double storey from the front and follows a drop of six metres opening itself to three storeys at the back. This allows the home to frame water views from most of the bedrooms and the extensive living areas found on each floor.

A restrained palette of finishing materials accentuates the different aspects to the stunning elevation. Stone cladding, cedar pivot door, timber framed windows and columns, rendered brickwork, custom mouldings, a curved roofline, hit and miss cedar lined eaves and aluminium has been used in a balanced and appealing manner. The front cedar pivot door, accessed along a walkway flanked by landscaped planters, has been built into a double height entry comprising a series of glass panes and thick cedar framed paneling in a horizontal and vertical format.

The entry floor has a theatre room, guest bedroom plus another two bedrooms each with their own ensuite, a kitchenette, meals and activity rooms. An outdoor sitting area set around a planter and an infinity edge L-shaped swimming pool and spa are at the rear of the home’s ground floor.

94

WA CUSTOM HOMES

While the rear elevation is largely glazed to allow access to the water views, a double height glazed wall to the right side of the entry exploits its own water aspect to a pond and raised planter. A lift positioned off the entry and adjacent to the pond has a glass face to allow views to the water feature.

The upper level has the main river views and is visually connected to the floor below with a double height void. A full width curved ceiling covering the main living areas upstairs complements the curved spine wall overlooking the void and the pond below. A set of highlight windows at the highest point of the curved ceiling lines the length of this area. The family, dining room plus the kitchen and larder and the expected hi-tech cooking appliances take up most

of this floor together with the master bedroom and ensuite which is entered from a suspended bridge. The alfresco beyond the stackable glass doors is connected to the kitchen by a frameless glass pivot door. Double height spaces, bulkheads, recessed ceilings, inbuilt curtain recesses and extensive shadow lined ceilings combined with the negative detail to most door frames help project a collective luxury within the home.

Nestled Into Its Neighborhood A luxurious Peppermint Grove home has been meticulously custom designed to reflect living of the highest order.

Its enviable location is a short stroll to the river and the home’s design and high quality natural materials reflect Giorgi’s renowned focus on contemporary architectural design. Designed for the entire 1800 square metre block this home is well suited to its neighbourhood and flows smoothly from the street front to the rear laneway. The elevation of glass, stone cladding, cedar, and painted render forms a striking arrangement. Mr. Giorgi said the home and its first class features will never date and has a relaxed and informal feel to it. “An emphasis on perfect architectural equilibrium and tailored harmony suited to the neighbourhood is paramount in any home we design and build”, he said. The entry point though a large, custom pivot entry door opens to a wide travertine tiled passage and to a vast expanse of glazing overlooking a landscaped courtyard connecting the

front to the rear of the home. The lower level has been mostly designed for entertaining and includes an alfresco area joining a billiards room, dedicated gymnasium, table tennis, inbuilt trampoline, basketball and half court tennis court plus an infinity edge pool. Leading upstairs from the open tread timber staircase, the three-storey masterpiece features a multitude of internal living areas spilling out to an equally large patio area that enjoys views across the river and to the city. An external cooking area mirrors the inside luxury kitchen and is connected with a full height glass pivot door. Mr. Giorgi said they are recognised for being architects and builders with an emphasis on the architecture. “Our target market is well versed in quality design so we are as excited with this home as we are of our future range of new and leading edge projects by our architect studio”, he said.

A versatile and multi skilled artist Jana Vodesil-Baruffi has many awards to her name, most recently the prestigious “Black Swan Prize for Portraiture”. The $50,000 award, donated by the Lester Group was presented to Jana at the award ceremony at the Art Gallery of WA on 11 November 2017.

Her artwork can be divided into three categories: “visual dairies”, which include paintings from her extensive travels, portraits and “fantastic realism.” While her “Fantastic realism” is her signature work that allows her to tell the story and express

Regardless of what I paint, when I am painting I am truly happy and at peace.” her ideas and beliefs in an interesting and creative way, she also loves painting portraits and landscapes. Jana is currently working on two new collections: a series of paintings and impressions from her travel to the Kimberley region and “fantastic realism” paintings inspired by the book “Half the Sky”; hoping to bring attention to modern slavery and the oppression of women and girls in the developing world. Traveling in The Kimberley left Jana with a deep desire to create a collection of paintings which would celebrate this part of our beautiful country. “The textures and colours of this region are amazing, the unique wilderness and vastness of the land is breathtaking and the spiritual energy is overwhelming”, she said. ‘The Kimberley has been painted many times before’, Jana comments, “and it will be painted again and again. Once you step into this landscape there is no way you can just leave and forget it. It is as unique as each artist who has tried to preserve its beauty for posterity”.

Jana’s work can be viewed by appointment in her private gallery at unit 7,16 Yampi Way, Willetton.

Breaking with

TRADITION Taught by his grandfather, Kim Fitzpatrick is a third generation glass artist - and his grandfather’s skills as a teacher were clearly pretty good, as Kim’s Perth based business, TSG (Tradition Stained Glass) has earnt a reputation as one of the best in the business. TSG’s proven expertise in replicating and restoring stained glass in the age-old method in which it was created has resulted in the company working on an array of significant projects, including cathedrals, Parliament House in Perth and other historically important buildings.

106

WA CUSTOM HOMES

Now Kim is forging a reputation as a leader in a whole new area of glass art. With his inherent artistic skills and a passion for glass as a medium, Kim has been creating spectacular fused glass artworks and their diverse application and installation abilities has resulted in an increasing demand for his work from both commercial and private clients. Kim’s fused glass artworks are created by combining various coloured glass together in a super-hot kiln until the colours blend together to create one piece. The ‘melting’ process allows the glass to merge together in an organic and fluid manner, and express abstract shapes and soft, free-form contours and colours with stunning effect.

WA CUSTOM HOMES

107

Refining the technique so that the various glasses and colours blend together for a specific desired outcome has taken Kim considerable time and effort to master, however he can now custom design pieces in specific colours and patterns to suit the individual desires of each client, whilst still guaranteeing that each and every artwork is 100% original. The ‘near unbreakable’ fused glass panels mean that the architectural application of Kim’s artworks are truly endless. To date Kim’s work has been integrated in commercial spaces and luxury homes as windows, door panels, splash backs, outdoor water features and of course decoratively, and when installed with backlit LED lighting they are elevated to a whole new level, with the creation of a diffused ambient light that emanates from a 3D abstract mural. More examples of some of Kim’s exceptional work can be seen on the TSG website: www.traditionstainedglass.com.au

Innovative Design for a Sloping Site Overcoming the obstacles of a difficult site is a true show of skill and experience and with this Coolbinia home multi-award winning Weststyle Design & Development overcame a significant slope at the front elevation to create a custom built masterpiece that will stand the test of time. The dramatic entry is a harmony of water, stone, glass bathed in a profusion of natural light. Clean contemporary lines blend with organic materials and warm tones to create an inviting ambiance. A large pivot entrance door provides views of an enchanting reflection pond where water flows through a laser cut screen over an infinity edge. A stunning stone feature wall cuts through the entire home and can be seen from almost every angle. Boral Cultured Stone cladding on the wall provides high visual impact and unites indoor and outdoor spaces.

The clients requested a functional, stylish home with plenty of living space where the family could come together, along with private spaces where the adults and their two young children could follow their own pursuits. The ground floor private suite with a convenient kitchenette provides the owners exclusive access to the parklike outlook to the rear of the property. The basement level houses an expansive workshop as per the owner’s request, as well as a multi-purpose space for the children.

A Harmony of Elements Modern aesthetics meet classic design in this West Leederville beauty that showcases a harmonious balance of gorgeous natural materials. This stunning modern masterwork pays homage to the heritage style of the area with a modern twist to the classic verandah.

The simplicity of a limited material palette enhances the strong design consistency that is evident throughout the home. Warm bronze tones of timber contrasted with cool travertine stone add a feeling of luxury.

Weststyle Design & Development created an expansive sensibility on this relatively small site by taking advantage of the height of the block and by designing an open plan layout. A guest suite was added by cutting into the site at the basement level and allowing it to virtually disappear in the brickwork so the home is perceived as having a floating effect. The impressive entry lounge challenges the tradition of vertical walls and horizontal ceilings with striking ceiling lines. Modern step light lighting leads to a distinctive timber pivot door and a harmony of glass, stone, and polished plaster blend to greet the visitor.

The clients requested a connectedness between interior and exterior living spaces and Weststyle allowed natural light to flood the home through generous windows, bringing the outside in and enabling the residents to take in the view of the greenery outside. The design also called for open spaces for entertaining. Weststyle included two separate entertainment spaces that serve different purposes. The casual living space features a zero threshold leading to the alfresco with natural travertine stone flooring flowing throughout. A more formal entertainment space features stunning custom stained parquetry flooring.

Fitting for its location in the coastal suburb of Cottesloe, this newly completed home by Kensington Design has a classic elegance reminiscent of the bright and airy homes that are found in New Yorkers favourite weekend getaway—The Hamptons. The exterior of the home incorporates a variety of finishes including painted render, weatherboards and feature stone in a palette of neutral tones that combine beautifully to create a charming and inviting façade. To maximise the north aspect, the open plan living area opens out onto the alfresco, lovely garden and pool area which have been placed at the front of the home, hidden from the street behind a wall, whilst the garage is cleverly concealed at the rear of the home past the elegant formal entrance.

Adjacent to the kitchen and dining room, this outdoor living room can be opened on three sides via bi-folding doors to create an expansive entertaining area that connects inside and outside spaces, or closed off completely for cozy nights in front of the gas log fireplace.

Narrow Lot No Obstacle The Parkview is a striking new contemporary home, and an impressive achievement for custom home builder, Domination Homes given an array of obstacles encountered both before and during this project. Commissioned to design and construct a four-bedroom residence with large, integrated living spaces on an especially narrow lot of only 10 meters, Domination came up with an innovative design that has resulted in a stylish yet functional family home, finished with exceptional craftsmanship. Located in a leafy street in the inner city suburb of Yokine, sleek contemporary lines and geometric forms create an eye-catching front elevation. A discreet door beside the driveway blends seamlessly with the exterior design creating a stylish visual effect and a problem solving solution. Visitors step through the door and enter an external covered corridor with sculptures and greenery to access the glass entry doors of the home. This clever side entry was employed to maximise the narrow frontage of the home, minimise passage lengths and allow additional light into the home whilst maintaining privacy.

The long, narrow lot demanded extensive use of glazing to allow for natural light so a wall of glass was used to separate the outdoor pool area from the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area creating a stunning visual feature of the pool from within the home. Additionally, glass bi-fold doors lead from the dining area and billiard room to the alfresco area and glass balustrading was used on the stairway and upper balcony. The interior palette is a sophisticated combination of white and muted greys. Extensive lacquered cabinetry in the kitchen provides ample storage whilst a scullery conceals the mess and a mirror splash back reflects the sparkling pool, all culminating in a beautiful space that is suitable to entertain guests.

Despite all the obstacles, which also included access issues due to the busy road, the resulting home is light, bright and remarkably spacious with integrated interior and exterior living spaces that are ideal for West Australian living. Taking advantage of the upper-floor views is the expansive open-plan living space. A wall of glass sliding doors separates the area from the the large alfresco balcony providing both an abundance of light and unobstructed views. Continuous flooring from the main living area to the alfresco makes the area feel twice as large and enhances the indoor/outdoor feeling. Timber veneer cabinetry in the living area houses a stylish gas fireplace and entertainment unit whilst also mirroring the cabinetry in the kitchen. A scullery and the sleek minimalist design of the kitchen allows, guests to be entertained whilst concealing mess. A stand out feature of the home is the kitchen island bench which is topped with a slab of stunning natural stone that cantilevers out 1.8 meters, the base of the unit blends with the stone tiles, so that the entire structure almost appears to be floating.

Individually, David and Yuge Bromley are creative forces to be reckoned with. Together, as Bromley & Co, the pair are a creative maelstrom. Under the Bromley & Co banner the well-respected artist and his wife run two creative studios, galleries in both Australia and in China, a fashion label and a burgeoning event and interior design service which is transforming hospitality spaces, hotels and even luxury custom homes into 3D artworks.

B

orn in Sheffield, England, David Bromley immigrated to Australia with his family at the age of four. After first working as a potter, David emerged as a painter in the mid 80’s and has since become one of the most recognisable contemporary artists in Australia, whilst also receiving widespread acclaim and notoriety internationally. As he stated in an interview with The Weekly Review: “I want to be like Crowded House or the Beatles - everyone’s got one of those albums” and it seems he’s well on his way to achieving his goal. As an artist, David has developed distinct themes and unique styles of painting, his best known being nude female portraits and his children’s series. Whatever the subject matter, his work is enduringly figurative, daringly coloured and executed with a graphic intention that is striking and memorable. More recently, David’s work has extended into sculpture, creating in both bronze and resin to bring to life the characters portrayed in his paintings. His work, both in painting and sculpture, has become integral to the key interior projects undertaken by Bromley & Co in recent years. David’s wife, Yuge, who was born in Beijing and brought up in New Zealand, originally worked as a lawyer while pursuing her passion for the arts. In 2012, she launched her own fashion label, Yugeyu, creating timeless pieces that blur the lines between art and fashion and often incorporating textiles designed by David.

Says David: “Like a farmer takes his intuition to the land and combines this with the pragmatic during the seasons, working hard and being creative every day is to us a language we speak together. When working together on numerous projects, we are each other’s Radar O’Reilly (think M*A*S*H), intuitively bouncing off each other. When we first met, we didn’t realise that neither of us slept much and found work more invigorating than socialising. The term ‘workaholic’ has been thrown around, but we disagree. With family at our core, we just do stuff together all the time. There are 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week, we measure a good day and night by how immersed we are in our creative adventure.” The pair’s approach to interior design projects is fun, vibrant and flamboyant, creating immersive art installations to live in, rather than interiors with a few artworks displayed on the walls. As David explains, “Art is just as essential as cars, fridges and lawnmowers. It gives an inherent quality of life.” “With a motley crew of collaborators / family of friends we constantly seek to bring our passions, our drive and wide range of skills to everything we pursue, be it art, design, retail, interiors or construction. Combining an established and multi-faceted capability in design, with an everexpanding web of passionate artists and artisans to create products and environments that we love to be surrounded in.”

The Bromley collaborators certainly are extensive and include major property developers, luxury home builders and brands like Dulux, Mercator and Zagame. The immediately recognisable Bromley child sculpture in the front garden of The Residence by Mazzei Homes in Melbourne in collaboration with Dan Webster Architecture and Nathan Burkett Landscape Design is an indication that Bromley & Co have been at work within. “Releasing in February 2018, is our interior fit-out for Mazzei Homes in Balwyn North,” says Yuge. “As part of our work for this luxury display home, we have been intimately involved in every facet and will be bringing in several customised design pieces including a 2.8 metre wide bronze wall relief featuring David’s iconic butterflies and birds in the main living area. We’ve also designed custom furniture pieces as well as curated an art collection for the home that will not only make the space a luxurious visual feast but somewhere people can feel entirely relaxed, at ease nestled in their nest.” On a larger scale, Bromley & Co have been

intimately involved with the West Village development in Brisbane by Sekisui House. “Our work on this major development has extended across a variety of realms,” says Yuge, “from working with the developers, architects, landscape architects and lighting designers to evolving and finalising components of the precincts through to creating a 1300 square metre function space, The Bromley Room, and the build of a rooftop loft apartment, The Little Bromley Loft, which will be a drawcard for the development and something to introduce people to the residential component of the precinct before it officially launches stage one in November 2018.” David and Yuge have also been engaged for the interior design and styling of other components in the precinct. “We will be back on site in April to work on the design and styling of the lobby and key entrance points for the first two residential towers, laneway activations, community engagement and art installations throughout the various beautiful and innovative park and green space areas.”

Here, Bromley &Co have created a uniquely art-centred experience within the 100-seat restaurant/dining/drinking area, adorning the space with paintings and sculpture reminiscent of their own studio spaces. “We wanted to create an enveloping experience where locals and visitors alike can feel transported to a fanciful space within the heart of Ballarat,” say Yuge. “Upstairs we have created a series of five apartments, three of which are available for rent while two will remain as our own residence. We will truly be the artists in residence of the pub and be involved intimately in the curation and styling of all the spaces on a regular basis.

The brief to ourselves when designing and decorating the apartments was Alice’s journey down the rabbit hole (adding a few mod cons along the way!).” The original stables built in 1887 will become the setting for supremely unforgettable events. “Set to open later in 2018, the Stables will be the epitome of entering into another world,” says Yuge. “While the Stables has been styled and set in our Mad Hatter’s way, we are still working on some extra special surprises for its launch.”

Watch out world, art – and the unstoppable Bromleys – are coming soon to a space near you, creating realms of experience that excite, inspire, immerse and provoke with their curiouser and curiouser aesthetic full of life, whimsy, vibrant colour and insouciant disregard for all ‘rules’, trends and conventions. “Why is it that so much art, not just painting but writing, music and dance is inspired by grief and heartbreak… I don’t know… but I anticipate I will be doing this series for a while.” — David Giles Wonder, 85 x 100cm

Whilst the sun setting over the ocean is hardly an original subject matter and draws on the romantic landscape tradition, The Solace Series artworks have been purposefully structured quite formally so that they can be read almost as Rothko-like colour field paintings. For David the series has also been a way for him to process the grief of a recent relationship break up, which sheds some light on the melancholy title of the series. “Why is it that so much art, not just painting but writing, music and dance is inspired by grief and heartbreak… I don’t know… but I anticipate I will be doing this series for a while.” says David. “I do tend to say that though about every new series, only time will tell.” Serenity, 65 x 85cm

Looking at works like ‘And then You Were Gone’ there is perhaps some evidence of emotional turmoil, however throughout the series there is a pervading sense of light, evoking a feeling of hope and optimism for the future. IN CONTEMPORARY HOME DESIGN

A Feng Shui consultation prior to finalising your new home design can ensure your home is optimal for good health, wealth and harmonious relationships.

F

eng Shui are words that are no longer foreign to most people but for most, the practice and understanding of what it is and how it works remain a mystery, hard to understand and therefore largely ignored, despite the fact that there is a growing realisation that how (well) your life occurs for you really is influenced by the spaces is which you live and work. My work puts me in touch with people who have problems in some area of their health, wealth or happiness. Having tried everything they know, often in desperation, they are willing to give Feng Shui a go. Of course, I love working with them to help resolve their difficulties, however, often our conversation leads to pointing out a structural issue that is creating or negatively influencing them for which a correction or remedy is challenging if not impossible. I dream of a time when we return to understanding the depth of influence our surroundings have on our health, wealth & happiness, and considering Feng Shui principles in depth at the design stage of homes becomes a standard practice.

WA CUSTOM HOMES

183

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN TRENDS THAT ARE BAD FENG SHUI You may not know it but there are some common design trends that ‘energetically speaking’ are not good practice. Here are four examples: 1. Ensuites that are open to the master bedroom – they leave you open to being energetically drained.

s U w o l l o F for more Custom Home Inspiration

2. Placement of plumbing pipes through walls where beds are placed, this will leave you open to health challenges 3. Bulkheads, exposed beams or recessed ceilings – corners and sharp edges accelerate energy and have a ‘poison arrow’ effect 4. Placement of the kitchen in the centre of the building – the centre of the home is considered in Feng Shui terms to be the ‘heart’ of the home. Adding Fire here ‘burns’ the heart of the home and digestive problems may also arise. A Feng Shui consultation prior to finalising your new home design can ensure your home is optimal for good health, wealth and harmonious relationships.

About the Author Fran Maunton has been in the Feng Shui industry since 2006, working initially with her teacher & mentor before venturing into the world of business and energy management as a sole trader. Community education has been a large part of growing the business. Few people knew then that Feng Shui was a thing let alone why they would want to consider tapping into it in their own homes. She continues to consult for individuals in their existing homes and now runs introductory seminars to help people gather an understanding of the what, why and how of Feng Shui and energy management, guiding them to create lives that are harmonious & prosperous.

succulents 186

WA CUSTOM HOMES

Relegated to tiny terracotta pots at Bunnings as gift ideas for kids and rockery filled gardens at Mexican themed restaurants, succulents were dismissed from mainstream landscaping for decades. Today however, succulents are arguably the hippest plants on the planet - being used in everything from floral arrangements to, vertical gardens and luxury landscape design. You only need to take a look at how versatile these ‘hard to kill’ beauties are to wonder what we were missing all these years.

Succulents make excellent vertical gardens because they are hearty, grow slowly and do not require regular watering.

Known as the ‘camels’ of the plant world, succulents store water for long periods which makes them particularly good for dryer regions where there are often watering restrictions in place, which also makes them great for those of us with black rather than green thumbs! They are often thought of as desert plants, but they also thrive in coastal regions which make them great for many parts of Australia where wind and sandy soil conditions limit planting option. One of the best things about succulents is their diverse array of colours, shapes, sizes and textures. From small and delicate pastel coloured rosettes to rich green tree like forms, they can be integrated into almost any style of garden to add colour and interest.

A considered selection of gorgeous pastel coloured succulents for ground cover have created this living work of art.

Creating the

PERFECT ALFRESCO In Western Australia, our lifestyle is synonymous with BBQs and dinner parties in the great outdoors. Our homes are now being designed with seamless integration of our interior and exterior living spaces and alfresco areas are becoming the centre of at home entertaining.

192

WA CUSTOM HOMES

So what elements should you consider if you want to create the ultimate alfresco? ENCLOSED OR OPEN Firstly, is your alfresco going to be enclosed or open? This needs to be considered for a number of reasons but most importantly so that relevant government and industry safety codes are met. We are seeing more and more alfresco areas being designed so that they can be fully enclosed thanks to bi-folding doors or café blinds which make the area much more functional all year round. ENTERTAINING STYLE How do you entertain? Do you cater for lavish formal functions or comfortable gatherings of close friends and family? This will help you factor in the size and how you can best utilise available space along with what facilities your alfresco may need. DESIGN Contemporary or rustic in style, consider a design that seamlessly integrates your alfresco area with interior living spaces. Your alfresco can then become an extension of interior entertaining space which will increase its usability. If this is not an option then you want to ensure your alfresco is inviting as well as functional. Also consider in the design process how and where you will place furniture and furnishings, this is just as important outside as it is indoors. HEATING / COOLING Again if you want to make the most of your outdoor living space, then you need to consider how comfortable it will be on hot summer days or cool nights. An overhead fan is a simple addition that can make all the difference when it’s warm. Integrated heating, whether it be overhead electric heaters, a gas fireplace or perhaps a built in fire-pit is also a sensible inclusion that will make entertaining outdoors

a lot more pleasurable when the weather isn’t cooperating as you’d like. ENTERTAINMENT Will your alfresco area be a place of quiet retreat in the warm summer breeze with a novel? Or a space for all weekend long poolside parties? Integrated sound systems and speakers take the argument out of who’s going inside to change the music and you may even like to take it a step further with an outdoor television or cinema set up for watching the football, cricket or late night movie. FACILITIES What facilities will you have in your alfresco? We are seeing more alfresco areas being completely self-contained with fully integrated kitchens containing BBQ, pot burners, pizza ovens, fridges, sinks and taps. The options of appliances are endless and there are lots of considerations when selecting these products and designing these kitchens, especially if your area is enclosed like whether the appliances will withstand weather and an outdoor environment PROFESSIONAL ADVICE Lastly, get professional advice from a reputable company who specialises in designing and installing alfresco areas. Ferguson Alfresco Lifestyle is Perth’s market leader and is unrivalled in terms of design, innovation and workmanship. A West Australian company, operating for more than 40 years, Ferguson Alfresco Lifestyle specialise in creating ultimate outdoor BBQ’s, pizza ovens and simply stunning alfresco kitchens in Perth and throughout Australia.
