Stunning things come in small packages This new home in North Perth by Pirone Builders is an excellent example of how clever design can create a spacious and luxurious home on a small and narrow block.
room with semi-ensuite / powder room on the lower floor, and a master suite and 2 additional bedrooms along with living area on the upper level.
Built for a young professional couple as their first marital home, the street frontage of only 12m was no hindrance in creating a home that is light, spacious and full of the exceptional attention to detail that has become a hallmark of Pirone Builders.
The stained jarrah timber flooring creates a perfect contrast with the carrara marble that has been used in the kitchen which is central to the main living areas of the home, and is a statement in style and sophistication.
Although small in width the feature stone and timber eaves on the front faรงade ensure that this home is a standout on the street. Internally the home includes living areas and a guest

Years in planning, the new West Perth location for Theory for Hair offers patrons more than just fabulous hair
a
fter many years trading in leased premises in Joondalup, East Perth and Subiaco, finding a salon space they could purchase outright and truly call ‘their own’ was a long time goal for Theory for Hair salon owners Carmel and Dave Lee. Years spent looking for the ‘right’ location a commercial space finally eventuated in 2013, with a 120 sqm empty shell at the base of AXIOM apartment complex on the corner of Hay & Thomas St, West Perth - only a short distance from their previous Hay St, Subiaco address. With its slightly elevated positon and expanse of ‘café’ windows’ the premises had an abundance of natural light that was high on the priority list for award winning colourist, Carmel. “Specialising in colour correction, it’s so important to have natural light. Most shopping centre salons have no natural light at all which makes it extremely difficult as a colourist to accurately assess hair colour. This salon has so much natural light that we could easily continue to work even if the power was out!” “The other thing I love about the openness of this space… “ - continued Carmel, “is that we experience what is going on outside - we can see the sun shining or the rain pouring down. We engage with the street, and the people walking by, and the garden space that we have access to which is quite unique on a busy city street.” Aside from the natural light, being a new building the blank canvas provided just the right elements to create the vision Carmel and Dave had in mind. “We had been looking for a space right from the onset that had an industrial feel.” admits Carmel. “I had an idea that I would like to contrast this with other elements that would add glamour to the salon and create a kind of balance between a masculine and feminine feel, that would appeal to all our clients. The ‘industrial look’ was achieved largely by Carmel’s design ideas and refusal to add a traditional ceiling. The exposed concrete ceiling and aluminium tracking, complete with air conditioning unit and pipework was instead left exposed, requiring considerable work to enable the tradesman to hang the 14 chandeliers that adorn the salon.
“We didn’t want to lose the ceiling height which really adds to the openness of the salon. We also liked the idea of leaving the exposed raw concrete, blended with metal, to sort of show off some of the scars of the building if you like. Rather than looking like every other hair salon, we wanted Theory for Hair to be unique & its own place, its own space, so that it could be anything really, a gallery, a café, a small function area, or a photographic studio.” Below, the concrete floor was covered with a black epoxy and the black leather chairs, that are optionally heated, self- reclining and massaging at the wash basins, complete what is predominantly a masculine colour palette. Breaking this up however are floor to ceiling mirrors which reflect the chandeliers - turning 14 into countless, and curtains of Swarovski crystals, hand strung by Carmel which catch the light and add just the right amount of ‘sparkle ‘ to the interior. The ambience in the salon is rather special, what you could certainly refer to as ‘Industrial Glam’ architecturally blending both masculine and feminine elements to create an androgynous space where both male and female clients feel equally relaxed and at home. “Both ourselves and our team really love the salon space. It’s a great environment to work in - and feedback from our clients has been wonderful.” says Carmel. “We’ve had many positive comments about the ambience… and”, says Carmel laughing “… very occasionally, a query about when we are going to finish the ceiling!” Theory for Hair is a destination salon, located at 1/1324 Hay St, West Perth.
“ We want people to feel uplifted when they come to Theory, and walk out feeling inspired, perhaps wanting to do something for themselves at home or at work to make their space more enjoyable … with great looking hair of course!”
Theory for Hair provide superior hair styling services and specialise in colour correction and hair extensions. Visit www.theoryforhair.com.au for more information or (08) 9322 9992 to book an appointment.

The brief provided by the clients described a three storey home that had well defined zones to provide privacy and personal space for the parents and each of their four teenage children. They wanted plenty of natural light and to be able to fully appreciate the scenic views of the Canning River. The brief was achieved so successfully through a central tower and distinct living zones throughout the home. The central tower, that also houses the lift, as well as the staircase and the surrounding voids, naturally divide the home into four quadrants providing personal spaces for each of the members of the family. The tower also brings natural light and maximises natural ventilation throughout the home. In addition to the travertine on the stone clad piers many other luxurious materials were used in the home. The cantilevered concrete staircase has timber tile treads and risers and coreten powder-coated stainless steel balustrades making it not only functional but a feature of the home.

Coastal Living at its Best When your eyes first fall upon this Pirone built masterpiece its sheer size and spectacular location may have you mistaking it for a luxury boutique hotel. In reality this is a single sprawling home set over four levels and more than 1,000 square metres of living space. The home at Mindarie Marina may not be a hotel but it was resort inspired, from the swimming pool on the main oor to the Penthouse oor Jacuzzi, widespread balconies and outdoor living spaces, and direct access to a private boat pen and jetty.nimus

Inside, extensive use of glass and the feature galleried ceiling on the main oor give the home a light and bright ambiance. The white walls contrast with the warm wood ooring and feature random stonework walls, creating an understated elegance that does not detract from the views on all sides.
Perched at the far end of Alexandria View there’s nothing between the home, the Indian Ocean and Mindarie Marina. The breathtaking views can be enjoyed from many rooms of the home though are most spectacular from the Penthouse level. Here the bar and Jacuzzi were designed specifically with indoor/outdoor entertaining in mind and to savour in the 270 degree panoramic views.

Though the home sits perfectly in its block several design challenges had to be overcome to create such a stunning home. The sizeable split level block runs all the way down to the water, however a strict site constraint restricted where a building could be constructed to a triangulated area of just over 250 square metres. The first challenge was to create a design that used the buildable area successfully, without ending up with a wedge shaped home. Then there were the environmental aspects: the windy coastal location was a prime
consideration when designing the home – how to maximise the views but minimise the impact of the wind. The resulting design does this and much more. The owner’s passion for boating and fishing is firmly addressed in the Undercroft Level where there is a stainless steel bench and cupboard for fish cleaning, and storage for fishing and boating paraphernalia. The self contained Guest Wing has two individual ensuites for the two bedrooms as well as a kitchenette and small living room.
On the ground oor are the main living areas and kitchen. They open out to a stunning swimming pool and Alfresco area. Rising up via the staircase, or the lift that connects all four levels, you reach the First Floor with its five bedrooms, each with ensuite and each with an individual balcony. The Penthouse Floor is the masterstroke of the home with its 100 square metre roof terrace and of course the Jacuzzi with its most enviable view though it is the home in its entirety, and all the pieces that work together, that give this home the real wow factor.

Riverside Modernism This Rossmoyne home has been skilfully designed to make full use of its corner block location to incorporate a myriad of features that include river views, plunge pool and an abundance of natural light, whilst still maintaining the privacy of its owners.

Kensington Design took on a design brief that included a challenging corner site and a restrictive covenant when they agreed to build this new home on Riverton Drive West, but this didn’t stop them from creating an appealing and modern home that sits perfectly in its surroundings. Predominantly single storey, this home holds its ground alongside larger two storey neighbours thanks to high roof lines and a raised ground floor so that the views of the river could be enhanced. The pitched roof contrasts with the flat roof on the front façade creating an interesting architectural style that merges traditional with contemporary. Inside, the pitched roof allows for an upper floor retreat with views to the river, and doubles as a guest space when family visit. Though garden areas are limited this home makes full use of outdoor spaces including a
completely private plunge pool in the north facing courtyard, and a spacious outdoor seating area, complete with barbecue, at the front of the home. Extensive use of windows and high level glazing creates bright and airy indoor living spaces with bamboo flooring throughout, and while open plan there is still a sense of separation between the rooms thanks to the layout. Uncluttered and minimalist in its decoration, the home features sleek high gloss cabinetwork, a square edged manufactured stone bench top, and custom designed glass splashback in the kitchen. Clever use of space provides an undercroft garage with extensive storage areas, and with an additional service courtyard on the south side of the house the home and grounds remain clutter free and with an attractive outlook.

An Impressive Transformation What started as an unassuming house on a residential street in South Perth is now a spacious and stunning family home. Historic character has been retained, yet the house has been firmly brought into the 21st century with modern, luxurious touches and bright open spaces.
The brief presented to Kensington Design sounded simple enough: to extend and modify the existing house to create a large and comfortable family home while retaining the existing character rooms at the front of the house. The resulting 2 storey home does this and much more. Entering through the front door it is the period features that stand out, some original to the existing home and some newly added. Original leadlights have been reincorporated while the new wide board jarrah ooring draws you further in to the home. To create ow and a seamless transition from the old to new, the jarrah ooring has been fitted throughout the new living areas and on the new, yet classic timber staircase. The staircase is a focal point of the home, sitting adjacent to the original entry and at the junction where old meets new.
Only the entry and front three rooms were retained from the original structure; the back portion of the home and upper oor were built new in order to maximise access to the large north facing garden with lap pool. The original master bedroom on the ground oor was repurposed as a guest suite and four new family bedrooms were created upstairs including the impressive master suite with its spacious balcony and glimpses of the city.

The new bright and open living areas of this home are perfect for modern day family life yet each member of the family also has their own private space. The study and music cum sitting room that arose from the original front rooms are a nod to the home’s past whilst providing additional living space.
The five dedicated professionals that comprise Kensington Design are renowned for their creativity and their personalised and meticulous attention to detail. They undertake only a small number of projects a year with the object of providing the best possible service. In 2012 they won four Housing Industry Awards, including the

Luxury as individual as you Designing and building a bespoke luxury home isn’t just about being individual. It’s about creating a home that is perfectly in tune with the way you like to live. Overlooking the river in Minim Cove, this spectacular residence by RiverStone Custom Homes is a top example. Suiting its young family to a tee, it reflects their lifestyle, their needs and their interests, from the way they like to entertain, to the music they like to listen to. Every element has been carefully considered so that the house fits like a glove, delivering custom-designed luxury on a realistic building budget of about $1.2million.

Paul Marshall, director at RiverStone, says the owners worked hand-in-hand with the RiverStone design team to turn their personal wish list into a reality. “Our motto ‘build well, live well’ has real meaning,” Paul says. “Like so many of our homes, this project was about creating a custom home that specifically suited the family’s needs and lifestyle.” As if that wasn’t enough, RiverStone had an awkward corner block of just 424sqm to work with. Thanks to teamwork, creative thinking and attention to the smallest of details, the home has all the spaces the young family needs and each space meets their brief perfectly. “Many of our clients want an individual home that stands out from the crowd, has been custom designed to suit how they live and can be achieved without breaking the bank,” Paul says. “This home demonstrates that it’s all possible.” A stunning three-bedroom, three-bathroom home with a pool, activity room, media room and outdoor entertaining room, the home has been built over three levels, with one floor underground. RiverStone dug down to create the extra space that the family needed, turning it into a hightech atmospheric media room where Dad – an audio buff – can fully appreciate his high-fidelity music. This tech-savvy family home also features a nifty computer desk built into the kitchen and an IT station in the laundry, complete with a ventilated cabinet to conceal the server. The kids have their own chill-out space upstairs near their bedrooms, while one of Mum’s favourite spots is the built-in desk space on the landing. It’s here that she enjoys some quiet time before the rest of the household is up, reading, catching up on paperwork, drinking in the river view and watching the day begin.

Off the master bedroom is an indulgent hotelworthy ensuite bathroom with a Rogerseller Amelie freestanding tub to relax in, while guests have their own bedroom and bathroom suite on the ground oor. Central to the design of this home, however, is the fabulous kitchen and indoor/outdoor living area where the family comes together to share the day’s stories and gather with friends. Large fun-filled get-togethers are easily accommodated and the RiverStone designers were even able to find space for a pool, which sits alongside the alfresco so that the youngsters can have fun in the water while still closely supervised. Two sets of Hafele semi-frameless bifolding doors deliver the ultimate exibility when it
comes to deciding whether the inside is out, or the outside is in. Folding back against the wall to all but disappear, these barely-there bi-folds have been used between the dining room and the alfresco, and along the outside edge of the alfresco so that the owners have full control over the indoor/outdoor spaces. Warming and welcoming, yet crisp and modern, this house is packed with five-star features that deliver high impact without the sky-high price. The double-storey void above the family room and the huge Avanti semi-commercial windows create a tremendous sense of style, space and volume, while the high-gloss designer kitchen boasts spotted gum veneer panels.

This modern minimalist home has four bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a gym, cellar, 4 car extra wide undercroft garage and a lift that connects all five levels of the home. Both the unique shape and extensive use of glass enable the home to take full advantage of the northern aspect and views to the ocean with barely any external walls coming between the inside and outside spaces. The views are maximised further thanks to the upside down design of the house, with bedrooms below and living areas above.
The sleek and sophisticated upstairs living area with feature gas fireplace takes the term ‘open plan living’ to a new level. Glass stacking doors open onto the alfresco area, connecting the indoor and outdoor kitchens, making this area even more expansive when opened. Family Friendly Luxury This Cambuild home in Claremont is a spectacular example of a luxurious family home that’s full of surprises. The unassuming façade sits naturally, though elegantly, on a suburban tree-lined street, giving nothing away as to the extensive and impressive interior that lies beyond the entrance. All future comparisons to suburban family homes can be left firmly at the front door as you make your way into this cleverly designed Classic Contemporary home. In the main living areas the double-sided fireplace with mirrored surround naturally divides the space between dining and living, and the reflective theme continues with a mirrored splashback in the kitchen. The expansive alfresco area includes an external lounge and outdoor kitchen making entertaining easy when taking advantage of the heated swimming pool.
The list of luxurious features is extensive yet this home steadfastly remains family friendly. Its blend of open plan and adaptable living spaces can transform with the changing needs of two growing school aged children. There are four bedrooms and four bathrooms, all with underfloor heating, plus a powder room. Style Meets Practicality Described by Cambuild as a ‘modern natural’ contemporary design, this Claremont home shows that practical family living doesn’t have to be boring. The tone is set from the moment you pass through the double entry doors into the grand entrance of the home, featuring overhead windows in a large void and a galley walkway above that connects the upstairs bedrooms. The timber floors throughout the main floor of the home draw you in and provide seamless continuity while use of the kitchen peninsula and wall mounted fireplace help to create definition between the main living spaces. The main floor is further zoned to provide a separate living space for adult children, plus a home office and theatre. The master bedroom is set in its own secluded wing for the ultimate in peace and privacy, while the remaining two bedrooms of the home are upstairs, each with its own ensuite. The narrow lot presented design and construction challenges as the home needed deep excavations to cater to the 7-car garage undercroft, gym and store. Despite the challenges the result is an incredibly practical family home that manages to exude style and elegance.

The Choice is Yours Nearly a decade has passed since Tom Brownbill formed the forward thinking residential construction firm, Design & Construct. In that time they have collaborated with many homeowners, together creating luxury homes that cater to a more sophisticated client wanting to celebrate their individuality. The directors of Design & Construct recognised that the days in which people settled for an “off the shelf display home” were gone. Even when such homes were heavily modified they still lacked the “wow” factor that clients were coming to expect. Homes were becoming an extension of their owner’s personality, representing who they are, their personalities and their interests. Constructed using the best in materials and craftsmanship, and designed to meet the individual needs of their family and chosen lifestyle, whether that be an entirely new build or a stunning re-working of an existing home.

The results of this collaboration are beautifully proportioned luxury homes that make a real statement about their owners and become lasting landmarks in their streets. A wonderful example of symmetry, this home is sophisticated yet welcoming with its clean angular lines and seamless interaction between all living spaces. The easy-to-maintain high glass porcelain reflects the light that enters in through the floor to ceiling glass concertinaed doors while contrasting with the natural stones and soft warm-toned timbers.
Look a little closer and the perfect symmetry continues, from the recessed, accent lit spaces for treasured art objects to the inbuilt fireplace, through to the gleaming kitchen with its superior fixtures and finishes. Even the glass elevator has been expertly designed and engineered to fit perfectly into the home, continuing the theme of light and accessibility in this elegant and stylish space. Design & Construct Residential uses their unique three-step process, Design – Tender – Construct that fosters communication, cooperation and transparency throughout the
project, from start to finish. Whether it is a difficult block or a narrow lot, the designers enjoy the challenge. Clients are invited to bring their ideas, plans and wish list to the first cost-free meeting, and from there, the award-winning head designer devotes as much time as is necessary to create the client’s ideal house. Using 3D concept drawings, every detail is covered right down to the fittings and colour schemes. Only when everyone is completely satisfied will plans be sent for approval and the best match sought between builder and client in an open tender process.

The Floreat project made proficient use of its narrow block. The resulting front alfresco offers a clever ow from indoor to outdoor living space, and being a slightly elevated block, privacy was maintained.

At street level the home has instant appeal. A feature wall clad in Balinese stone draws your eyes upward to the rooine and custom splayed guttering and fascia that only hint at the quality finishes and features that continue internally.

Here an impressive 6m void with feature oor to ceiling windows add considerable light and openness to the home and showcase the wrap around pool and poolside cabana with timber decking beyond.
Large glass doors lead from the sleek galley style kitchen with walk in pantry to the outdoor kitchen and alfresco area. Continuity in the large ceramic tile ooring from internal to external living areas further emphasises the connectedness of the two areas. Upstairs, the master suite is a secluded haven, where double walk in robes lead to a luxurious

Three other spacious bedrooms, and a generous bathroom centre around the upstairs living area which again takes full advantage of the void to take in light and views of the sparkling pool and water feature below. Each interior living area incorporates an adjacent exterior space accessed via glass bi-fold doors. At the lower level this includes a magnificent cantilevered entertaining deck that extends over the water feature at the entrance of the home. Internal walls are kept to a minimum with exible elements and unique materials used to delineate spaces and maintain the open and airy feel whilst providing multiple indoor and outdoor spaces for for individuals in the home to retreat in privacy and seclusion.

History Since 1956, the name Zorzi has become synonymous with high quality, craftsman built homes Australia wide. Zorzi Builders was founded on an ethos of hard work, and inspired by a family passion and the never ending pursuit of excellence in delivering the highest quality design and construction of new homes. Dating back over four generations, the Zorzi passion started when Corado Zorzi first saw the work of Andrea Palladio, while working in the family business in Italy in the early 1900’s. Born in 1576, many consider Andrea Palladio to be the grandfather of residential Architecture, having created such iconic residences as the Villa Valmarana ai Nani near Vincenza, in 1670. Quality, craftsmanship and design have always been the signature of Zorzi. From humble beginnings, providing house and land packages, to the exclusive, custom designed homes of today which have become the benchmark in residential quality construction. Since their inception, Zorzi has always strived to lead the market with innovative, unique solutions. This pioneering spirit is underpinned by the timeless values of quality and craftsmanship, which are at the heart of every Zorzi home. Elegant grandeur can only be achieved through considered design and the melding of quality materials with the highest standards of workmanship. Zorzi homes are distinguished by their contemporary designs and an attention to detail evident in every aspect of the home – from the concrete and brickwork through to the fixtures, fittings and finishes.
As the Zorzi brand grew so too did the value of the projects it undertook. With a growing brand and affluent clientele the importance of evolving into a multi-faceted building company was recognised. Grandwood by Zorzi was established in 1994 as a response to expanding client families looking to build at all different levels of style and budget, changing community tastes, trends and styles. Grandwood quickly demonstrated the value of the Zorzi heritage by winning the HIA Golden Key for best display home in Perth with their first display home, and then the National award for building the best home in Australia, a few years later. This is an accolade many builders do not achieve in a lifetime, let alone the first years of operation. Grandwood by Zorzi has been built on a reputation for producing outstanding homes that encapsulate the essence of individuality and style. Underpinned by the Zorzi master brand, Grandwood epitomises the Zorzi values in quality and craftsmanship, leveraging this to deliver a range of homes that are accessible across a broader range of price points by streamlining the process down to a seamless art form. Grandwood Homes provides clients with flexible custom and customised solutions to suit individual needs, unique sites and a personalised service at every stage of the building process. South Perth Stunner A narrow block of only 16.5 metres and a client with very specific desires were just two of the challenges that needed to be met in the construction of this stunning home on the South Perth foreshore. Working with Boughton Architecture, Zorzi Builders brought to the table their sixty years of experience building some of Australia’s most luxurious homes to meet all the challenges of this project and deliver a world class home that exceeded the expectations of their client.
One of the key factors for this client was to take full advantage of the magnificent river and city views from as many corners of the home as possible without encroaching on their neighbour’s privacy and also ensure that all the finishes in the home met their specific taste. The resulting home is a fusion of modern and classic styling set over four levels with a total oor space of 1,389 square metres - nearly double the size of the land area. Retreat Amidst the Trees Located in the hills overlooking Dunsborough this holiday home enjoys its surroundings to the fullest with its abundant floor to ceiling windows and glass doors. Low maintenance and energy efficiency combine with quality Tallwood construction, resulting in a holiday home retreat where the owners can come and go as they please. The home is constructed of concrete with a Spotted Gum timber cladding that was custom milled to the architect’s exact specifications. The result is a beautiful contrast between the natural timbers and the manmade concrete which together sit surprisingly well into the surrounding landscape. While beautiful, the treed hill block presented its own challenges during construction. The “goat track” route in for the heavy machinery needed to construct the formed concrete walls made access difficult, though removing the existing trees on the block was not an option.

Having installed the windows and doors in every ‘Home of the Year’ since their inception, WDW are also exclusive distributors of many leading European window systems and leading the way with innovative window and door solutions. Just over ten years ago, with a combined experience of over eighty years in the glass fabrication and installation industry, Westec Directors, Ian, Dave and John, identified a gap in the market, catering to the unique glazing needs of luxury home builders. As is the case today, the majority of window companies at the time produced only simple rectangular windows, meanwhile architects and builders wanted to see their innovative glazing ideas come to life. Westec Doors & Windows was consequently formed to fill this niche and the company took on an approach to challenge and push the boundaries of what was possible. Their success in achieving this is clearly evident in the results. Smilng Rock have also recently introduced a new line of artificial turf. “Many clients love the look of natural grass…” comments owner Zi, “but due to the reduction in our yard areas, they have only a very small area to grass or may have restricted access such as poolside that makes natural grass difficult to maintain. We have consequently sourced a very natural looking product from one of the world’s leading suppliers that is part of the FIFA Quality programme. With the hot summers we experience in Perth, artificial turf is also a lot more practical”
Nothing beats the look and feel of natural stone. Smiling Rock supply a stunning selection of natural stone paving including slate, sandstone, granite, travertine and marble. To Cellar or Not to Cellar: Which Wines to Store Away? By Jean-Marie SIMART, Director of the Vintec Club Starting a wine cellar can be a great investment, or just an enjoyable pastime, however not all wines are worthy of cellaring. Jean-Marie Simart, Director of the Vintec Wine Club provides his advice and recommendations on great wines to cellar.
Sixteen years ago a survey ordered by the wine industry found that on average, a bottle of wine in Australia was kept less than 24 hours after purchase. I don’t know the present statistics but I would be ready to bet some of my best bottles that a bottle purchased today has a longer life expectancy in Australian households. Which wines however are actually worthy of keeping? First let’s consider what cellaring wine is all about. Although there is no official definition, it would be reasonable to say that cellaring is storing wine until it reaches its peak. As wine is a living product it changes with time however it’s not always for the better! Knowing which wines to store is the key. As a general rule, Australian winemakers are making their wines to be consumed within their first few years whilst European winemakers tend to make their wines for longer maturity. So, let’s go through a few of my personal recommendations, starting with the whites. There are of course exceptions but generally speaking, Australian white wines do not last as long as the reds, and among the whites semillons and rieslings have a much longer life span than chardonnays and sauvignon blancs. Among our Australian whites, the wines that tend to be best after 10 years would be some of the Hunter Valley semillons, some good examples are Braemore by Thomas Wines Tower Estate Wines and Tyrell’s. From abroad, the French Bordeaux, made essentially of a combination of sauvignon blanc and semillon can easily be kept ten years or more. Among a few I would recommend are Domaine de Chevalier, Doizy Daene and worth the extra investment - the fabulous chateau Haut Brion and the “Y” made by d’Yquem. Most whites from the Rhone Valley are also good choices as well as the marvellous Italian: Quintarelli bianco. When it comes to dessert wines many can be kept for years and will increase in depth and complexity whilst aging. Specially recommended are French sauternes, Australian de Bortoli Noble One and all botrytised semillon. When it comes to reds we have a much larger selection of good cellaring options, however as a general rule lighter reds like pinot noir, Grenache and mourvedre have a shorter lifespan than heavier shiraz’s, cabernets and merlots. The lighter reds usually have a maximum cellaring life span of around ten years whilst heavier wines can potentially be kept 50 years or more. Recommendations for Pinot Noirs include those from New Zealand wineries, Central Otago, Felton Road, Gibson Valley Reserve and Mount Difficulty. Of our Australian Winemakers: Picardy, Giaconda and Domaine A are good choices. For French Burgundies my recommendations are; Santenay, and Vosne Romanée, which can be kept for many year as well as many wines again from the Rhone Valley.
Shiraz’s? … of course there’s no going past the famous Grange whose 1951 vintage is still enjoyable at $40,000 plus (or so I have been told ) but if your budget doesn’t quite extend there then these are great wines to consider are St Henri, Bin 707, RWT, the St Hugo from Orlando, Henry’s Seven from Henshke, Thomas Kiss, the shiraz viognier from Clonakilla, Meerea Park, and the Maurice O’Shea shiraz. When it comes to Cabernet sauvignons and franc, and cabernet merlots many of these are worth cellaring, often for ten years or more. In Australia, these mainly come from Margaret River and include; Cullen’s Diana Madeline, Moss Wood, Howard Park and Vasse Felix. From South Australia great options are Penfolds Bin 09 and Bin 407, all wines made by Clarendon Hills, Wynns and John Riddoch. From the Yarra Valley: Yarra Yarra, Yarra Yerring and Hunter Valley: Lindeman’s St George. When it comes to the French reds, most of the Bordeauxs must be kept several years to reach peak drinkability. among these are grands crus Haut Brion, Domaine de Chevalier, Petrus and Cheval Blanc. There are nearly no exceptions among the great Bordeaux reds from the Left Bank - leave them at least ten years! Of the Italian reds, cabernet franc by Quintarelli is excellent (if you can get your hands on some). The above are just some of my personal suggestions from my own journey into the wonderful world of wines but your own choices shouldn’t be limited to these by any stretch. For additional advice and recommendations there are many books and reviews regularly issued by professional wine writers such as James Halliday, Robert Geddes, Huon Hook and Peter Bourne, along with professional magazines such as Decanter, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Winestate and of course, the famous classification made by Langtons. The best way to build your cellar though is to start with the wines you love. Find out direct from the winemaker about its intended maturity and how long it could be cellared for. Many winery websites will already share this information with you and if they are worth holding on to, take patience by drinking some great younger wines in the interim! More wine resources and cellaring advice is available on www.vintecclub.com.au including the following interesting further reads: • Do All Wines Age Well: www.vintecclub.com.au/whysome-wines-age-well-and-how-and-why-some-not/ • A Guide to Ageing Potentials: www.vintecclub.com.au/ageing-potential/
Its very first vintage, the 1951 Grange is said to still be very drinkable (at $40,000 plus!)
Aging Gracefullly
If you’re considering a wine cellar in your new home, we’ve prepared a must read guide on wine storage that will ensure you’re drinking and enjoying your wine for years to come. Some like to drink their wine young and fresh, but if you’re a wine enthusiast who appreciates wine that has aged gracefully with the additional body and character that only time can add, then storing your wine in optimal conditions is the key. As a basic guideline, the cellaring option you choose for your home should recreate similar conditions to those found in the best natural underground cellars.
There are five basic factors to consider when deciding how and where to store your wine: 1. Stability of Temperature: daily and seasonal ambient temperature fluctuations denature wine, accelerating or stunting normal maturation, and creating “spoiled fruit” flavours. 2. Maintaining a High Humidity: it’s important that the humidity of the environment is at least 60% . This ensures that corks do not dry or shrink, allowing damaging air to “oxidise” wine and cause off-odours. 3. Exposure to UV Light. UV light causes hydrogen sulphide compounds in wine and affects the tannins and the colour of your wine. 4. Environmental Stability – Vibrations and movement prematurely deteriorate wine by speeding up chemical reaction, keeping wine in a consistently stable environment will ensure optimal aging 5. Airflow: lack of appropriate ventilation can make wine cellars become stale and mouldy and effect the integrity of the wine, it’s therefore important to ensure that there is adequate ventilation and fresh air available in your chosen wine storage area.
Common Wine Storage Mistakes 1. Near appliances that radiate heat. A recent trend, is wine racks above or beside the stove in the kitchen. Heat literally ‘cooks’ wine resulting in unpleasant and “jammy” flavours. This goes the same for other appliances - e.g. fridges, dishwashers, washing machines and heaters and fireplaces. Even short bursts of intense heat can quickly deteriorate wine. 2. By windows or doors. Placing cabinets near windows or doors provide exposures to damaging UV light. 3. Dark areas that fluctuate in temperature. Those who are aware of the above, often choose dark cupboards or perhaps even have a ‘wine cellar’ under the house, however if the climate in this area fluctuates within more than a few degrees your wine will also not keep well. In Australia and particularly areas which can experience very warm summer days and very cool winter days the fluctuation in temperature may be 20 degrees at times. Ultimately if you do not have a proper, purpose built wine cellar, the hard and fast rule is that it’s best not to waste money trying to keep wines – buy just what you need for the next few days as one does groceries - wine is a fragile and “living” product. Incorporating all these elements into a purpose built wine cellar is not as simple as it sounds. excavating underground wine cellars can be prohibitive on both a practical and financial basis. One of the best alternatives to custom built wine cellars is cellaring cabinets – purpose built wine storage cabinets have been the option of choice in Europe for many years. If your collection is for investment purposes, then being able to prove provenance and proper cellaring will also maximise your return on investment.
Climate-controlled storage options such as Vintec and Transtherm wine cabinets will ensure that your wines are always stored in the perfect conditions for maturation.
How to Choose the Perfect Wine Storage Cabinet for your Needs? There is a large range of wine cabinets on the market, some of them being sleek and attractive pieces of furniture, with many styles and capacities available – but not all wine cabinets are created equal and it’s crucial to choose carefully. First, make sure you choose a wine cabinet, not a “wine cooler” or “wine fridge”: wine fridges and ordinary refrigerators generate intense cold and remove ambient humidity, which will affect your wine over time. There are some easy ways to tell a proper wine storage cabinet from a wine fridge:. Good wine cabinets will always have a humiditymanagement system (to preserve corks), tinted glass and dark interiors along with LED light only to protect from light exposure, and finally wooden shelves (to absorb imperceptible vibrations). Second, when choosing a cabinet, consider your personal needs; How many bottles will you need to store? You’ll want to be able to add to your collection so make sure you have enough space to grow. Where will you place your wine cabinet? There are free standing models and built in models available that can be incorporated into kitchen cabinetry.
Are you looking to cellar or serve with your wine cabinet? Single temperature cabinets are ideal for cellaring (all wines cellar at 12°-14°), whereas multi-temp models are designed to serve your reds and whites at the proper drinking temperatures. In summary, the right wine cabinet for you will be largely determined by your own personal requirements however if you’re serious about investing in wine then the first investment you should make is in a quality professional, wine storage unit.

Having had countless solo exhibitions all over the world since the 1980’s and as a six time Archibald Prize finalist, there wouldn’t be too many Australians that don’t know the name David Bromley. Some may also be aware of criticisms about the commerciality of his work, but an inherent passion for his subject matter and lack of interest in what the critics have to say drives this artist to continue to create art that reflects the same iconic work that first drew worldwide attention to him many years ago. Starting his artistic career as a potter, and entirely self-taught, Bromley has built a solid reputation as one of Australia’s eminent modern artists. Named several times by Art Collector as one of the 50 most collectable Australian artists, Bromley likens his drive to produce art as similar to the way surfers are drawn to the ocean. This might also be the reason this Sheffield born artist, a long time Melbourne resident has now based himself in Byron Bay close to his roots in Noosa where he first developed his passion for both surfing and painting (and now paints surfboards that are sold for over $10,000). Bromley’s consistent narratives are ones that he claims to have ‘fallen in love with’ which is an endearing explanation for why he finds them so hard to leave behind. These include his ‘Children’s Adventure’ work that has derived from his love of comic books from his own childhood and ‘Boys Own’ annuals - which were moral tales for the young from before the turn of the century. Rather than moving on to other themes, Bromley has continued with the same tales of childhoold innocence and adventure experimenting with mediums including bronze, paper mache, and embroidery. Another of Bromley’s well known themes are his female nudes. Working predominantly from photos taken by himself, these paintings are usually larger than life and feature beautiful young women, usually bare breasted in portraits that Bromley describes as ‘keyholes to an abstract painting’. As a portrait artist, David is in high demand and his portraits have included celebrities Kylie Minogue, Megan Gale, Miranda Kerr and Lily Allen - commissioned by Harpers Bazaar for their cover. Although diverse in subject matter, all Bromley’s work has a consistency in its pop art style with bold use of colour and gold and silver leaf that is reminiscent of Andy Warhol, another of his professed inspirations. An appeal to broader community is another concern of Bromley’s, it’s not about commercialism but making a connection with every day people through art that they can relate to, believing that a lot of the stories told by paintings are for the art literate only. His popularity and the longevity of his career is certainly a reflection of that mass appeal. Ultimately self-expression and following your own path is the very essence of a true artist and Bromley has certainly remained true to himself by following the passion he has for his subject matter despite the critics.
Large bare walls are obvious options for wall art, but there are a myriad of other considerations that can ensure your artwork is optimally displayed rather than it being an afterthought in the decorating process.

If you’re building a new home now is a great time to consider how you might incorporate art in your new environment. For those who are new to buying art it might seem a little daunting. Some galleries can appear intimidating, and the work itself can sometimes seem as though it was created for an elite group of arty types who are the only ones who will ever ‘get it’. We’ve therefore created a list of things to consider on your first art buying adventure.
JAHROC FuRniTuRE 6m long jarrah single slab dining table
Getting started If you’re not sure where to start, consider things that you have an affinity with, whether it’s the ocean or nude women there are many artists that work on theme. Do some research and start by looking at local galleries with similar work where you can view art in the flesh, talk with the curators, find out about up and coming artists that are relevant. Gallery staff are there to assist you with the buying process so don’t be afraid to ask questions - other than ‘does this come in another colour’… Once you start to get a feel for what you like you can extend your research by doing keyword searches online. Art is global, you’re not restricted to local artists or galleries. There are many online galleries that organise shipping to anywhere in the world.

Fall in love This is the number one rule. Art in your home is an expression of your personality and should speak to you in some way - you will know when you find something that is meant for you as you will be mesmerized and the idea of looking at every day will be exciting. However if you are considering your purchase as an investment as well, then remember to realize the value of your investment you will have to eventually part with it one day.

Consider the scale & where you will display it So you’ve fallen in love with a life size rhino from an up and coming sculpture artist and it also fits within your budget. It’s all very exciting you love rhinos and you believe you’ve found the perfect piece. That’s wonderful if your new home is a semi rural property and you can create an African Savannah oasis in which to place him but if you’re in the middle of suburbia it may not be best the purchase. Same also goes for content. Consider anything of a graphic nature in the same way , you might love it but you probably don’t want to have it hanging beside your 14 seat dining table at dinner parties.

y Child’s Pla IT specialist Paul Sherriffs talks about simple ways to incorporate technology in your home.
When planning your new home, there are countless ways of incorporating technology. From smart wired audio visual entertainment to security systems, central lighting and even automated window treatments. But whilst your full list of desires may outweigh your budget the good news is there are many ways to include technology in your new home both easily and affordably. In fact you can also retrofit systems to existing houses without having to undertake much re-wiring - if any at all.
Redback are a local company that make a good set of marine speakers perfect for outdoor under-eve mounting, but if you’d prefer a brand name then Bose offer many different levels of outdoor speakers.
In this article I am going to primarily talk about audio visual equipment and what devices can be utilised for easy home automation. I primarily work with Apple systems, mainly because by using an Apple ecosystem it is easy to maximise the value of existing systems. A long over looked slim line Apple device is the Apple TV. I refer to these as Blockbuster in a Box, because these small inexpensive devices connect to any HDMI televisions and make purchasing and viewing movies, TV shows, and podcasts child’s play. If you have an iPad or iPhone you can even use this as your remote control.
Another trick of the Apple TV is the way it integrates with your iPad. For example; If you have a video playing on your iPad you can use a technology called Airplay to flip the iPad video on to your large television screen. Another Apple product called an Airport Express (a little white box this time), is a great device that will allow you to play your iTunes library to a set of power speakers indoors or out, all controllable through your iPhone or iPad.
Another brand that has been well placed for excellent speaker set ups are Sonos. They now have quite a range from TV sound bars to new small speakers called the Sonos Play 1. Their main feature, aside from their impressive audio quality is the extensive internet radio playlist and integration with popular applications such as Spotify and Pandora. The next step in the AV world is to get rid of your plastic, when I say plastic I mean DVD’s and CD’s. Centralising your movie and music collection is the best way to preserve your investment, but if you are going spend the time to RIP all your data then it’s a good idea to ensure it’s saved to one streamlined location and then make sure it’s backed up regularly! Once you’ve taken the time to do this an easy way to access your central library is by storing it on NAS (Network Attached Storage). This is basically a group of hard drives in a box. Most modern TV’s have a feature called DLNA - this technology will look for servers that also have DLNA and will enable your TV to communicate with the NAS and find the location of all your
stored TV shows, movies, music and photos, extending all your data on the server to your AV equipment throughout your home. Less interesting but no less important are the connection types you can use in your house. What you require really depends on your individual needs. Wireless is great but it may struggle if you start streaming huge video files to four TV’s at the same time. In this case hard-wiring your entertainment equipment via ethernet data cable and back to a central communications cabinet is the best solution. Although the above technology can be implemented in your home quite simply, the most important thing to remember about your home automation is that all important back-up. The more our lives go digital the more important a backup system is - one that is fully automated and does not require you to remember to do it! Paul Sherriffs has 20 yrs experience as an IT consultant specialising in Macintosh and Apple products. His services include business and home networking, automated back up systems and simple home automation in your home. He can be contacted on 0413067414

Get Arty Outside Many people think of art as something that hangs on the wall and collects dust, but a new trend in landscaping is seeing more and more art feature outside the home. Garden art has always existed in some shape or form but the ‘garden art’ being installed in many of today’s luxury gardens is a long way from the garden gnomes of the past. This trend is largely due to the emphasis that is now being placed on our outdoor lifestyle. Homes are being built with large al fresco entertaining areas that were not considered 20 years ago and the garden is becoming much more of an extension of the home, therefore why not decorate the garden in the same manner as the interior areas of your home. The most common type of ‘outside’ art is of course sculpture. Most obviously because of the materials that are used in the construction of sculptures which allow them to withstand the elements. However due to the the nature of the environment in which it is placed it’s also natural that an open space would call for a three dimensional artwork. Sculptures have been used for thousands of years in the public domain. Some of the most famous landmarks in the world are public sculptures eg: the Statue of Liberty in New York, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. Stone, marble, bronze and other metals are highly durable and withstand the test of time, making them a worthy investment. Any changes that do occur tends to be an organic process that sits well in their garden environment. Sculptura is a leading Australian company specialising in architectural sculptures. Sculptura provide a large range of contemporary and traditional sculptures from leading artists around the world that have both aesthetic and investment value. Sculptura have supplied large scale sculptures to commercial entities including Westfield Bondi, The Langham Hotel in Melbourne, Ferrari and other prestige brands. Smaller sculptures from Sculptura are showcased in the gardens and interiors of some of Australia’s most exclusive homes. A range of sculptures currently available can be viewed on the Sculptura website: www.sculptura.com. Shipping can be arranged to anywhere in Australia. Due to Sculptura’s extensive experience and access to an exclusive and diverse range of artists, custom made sculptures can be acquired to suit your individual vision for your project and a consultative service is available to help assist you with acquiring a sculpture that will best enhance your space.

CONCRETE v FIBREGLASS Pro’s & Con’s
For many who are building a new home, a sparkling pool is a ‘must have’ on the list. There is a long standing myth that concrete pools are superior to fibreglass pools, however the reality is that what is ‘best’ is largely dependent on your individual requirements. Here is an overview to help you determine what might be the best solution for you.
Concrete Pools
BENEFITS The main benefit of concrete pools is that almost anything you imagine can be designed – at a cost. Concrete pools are completely custom built on-site to suit your specific requirements and the area in which you want it placed therefore they allow for all kinds of unique designs, lengths, widths and features and can include a range of colours and finishes, water features, inbuilt spas, rock waterfalls and anything else you can imagine.
Unique designs such as these pools that wrap the boundary of the home and windows to internal areas are only possible with concrete pools.
DRAWBACKS -
Concrete pools require more chemicals and traditionally are not as good with saltwater systems as fibreglass pools
-
Although arguably dependant on the installer ,the finish on concrete pools (unless fully tiled) tends to be rougher and harsher on the skin than fibreglass pools
-
Concrete pools require more maintenance, generally a replaster after a number of years and can crack due to standard movement of the earth
-
Concreate pools tend to be colder than fibreglass pools as they do not retain the heat in the same way that fibreglass pools do
-
Due to the number of steps required to install a concrete pool, installation time is considerably longer than fibreglass pools. Due to drying time, weather conditions can delay the process more so than fibreglass pools
Fibreglass Pools BENEFITS -
As fibreglass pools are pre-fabricated the cost tends to be considerably lower than their concrete counterparts
-
Unlike concrete pools, fibreglass pools resist algae growth and have less maintenance costs
-
Fibreglass pools can be installed quickly - in as little as a week compared to the time required to install concrete pools which can be many months depending on the complexity of the pool
-
Delays due to weather conditions are less of an issue as there are no ‘drying times’ etc that are required with concrete pools
-
Cost of repairs to fibreglass pools tend to be less than concrete pools and also occur less frequently.
Fibreglass pools can be just as stylish and sophisticated as concrete pools and look completely at home in the exteriors of luxury homes.
DRAWBACKS -
Although a variety of designs and shapes and sizes are available from various suppliers, as fibreglass pools are pre-fabricated they are not customisable to exact lengths and specifications.
-
Requires sufficient access to allow a crane to be able to drop the fibreglass mould in.
Like anything, the quality of the pool and the results that you receive are dependent on the supplier and therefore choosing a well reputed pool company that is a member of SPASA is imperative.

Timeless Elegance For brothers Tony & Michael Donatelli of OGGI Stone Craft, supplying beautiful garden art isn’t just a business, it’s a passion. There is a strong artistic influence in the family and Michael’s history working with pottery and stone dates all the way back to 1979. The desire in forming OGGI Stone Craft fifteen years ago was to create a unique range of products that were both visually appealing and of uncompromised quality. The pair are masters at crafting sandstone, granite and other materials into objets d’art, however credit a large portion of their success on a ‘secret family recipe’ they use to form many of pieces in their vast range, ensuring they are durable as well as timeless. As artisans, with a passion for creation the OGGI range is extensive, and continuously growing. The current range includes everything from modern and contemporary pieces to water fountains, statues, and urns with a distinct European influence - it is these pieces that Michael says ‘add class’ to the average garden.
A large portion of the range is adaptable, allowing pieces to be combined to create unique pieces unto themselves, ornaments can be added to water fountains, various pedestals can be applied to urns and statues. The couple are also more than willing to provide design advice and help you select the perfect pieces for your individual space. This also extends to custom making items to suit your specific needs. With other ‘discount’ suppliers having entered the market, the longevity of the business is a testament to the quality and service standards that the pair claim as their ‘customer commitment’. “Whilst we ensure our products are affordably priced to remain competitive in the market, only the finest components and raw materials go into creating an OGGI piece” says Michael, “This way our customers know that they are investing in a piece of garden art today, that their children will fight over tomorrow.”
The OGGI showroom is located at 222 Collier Rd, Bayswater WA Ph: 9371 9191 Examples of the extensive range available from OGGI can be viewed on their website: www.oggi.com.au

Coastal Living One of the best things about living in Perth is our easy access to our magnificent coastline. Yes we’ve been blessed alright. There’s not too many locations in the world that are centred along such an expansive strip of pristine beaches where we have the opportunity to sit on our balcony with a glass of wine (Margaret River of course), and watch the sunset over the ocean. Then there’s the beach lifestyle, picnics at our many beachside locations, early morning walks, fishing and boating and of course the surf. If like so many of us you’re drawn to the ocean whenever the weather permits, then the great news is that there is some superb coastal land available that takes full advantage of this lifestyle.

Burns Beach by Peet
Just a little further north, the development by Peet at Burns Beach is set on some of Perth’s finest northern beaches. Stretching right down to the coastline, around 1000 homes have joined the community since land was first released in 2005 with some home-sites closest to the beach attracting prices in excess of $1 million. Lots are generously sized up to around 629sqm, allowing plenty of room for large alfresco areas, pools and landscaped gardens, to fully enjoy coastal living at its finest. The entire community makes excellent use of a spectacular $900,000 foreshore park that opened in 2007, and is again in close proximity to the nearby amenities available at Joondalup, as well as public transport and local schools. Each stage of Burns Beach features its own building covenants that have been especially prepared by Peet to protect your investment and maintain the high standards of the estate. The result is a community filled with stylish one and two-storey homes designed and built to luxury standards with many making use of the striking ocean and parkland views that are available throughout the estate. www.burnsbeachestate.com.au
