A Message from Your editor! Hello Key Clubbers! Happy new years to all of you! Now that the new year has begun, this is a chance for all of us to have a fresh new start. Let’s all plan out our 2014 New Years resolution so that we can all become better versions ourselves. This is why the cover page is of a tree. The tree represents us and hopefully throughout the year we’ll all be able to grow and take more steps into becoming the person that we want to be. In the upcoming month, we will be holding officer elections. This year it will be slightly different. The elections will be divided into core board and non-core board. Core board will be interviewed by the seniors while non-core board elections will be in front of the whole club. Don’t forget to turn in your applications which is due on January 18th at midnight sharp! I encourage everyone to run because to be honest being in a Key Club officer is one of the greatest experiences I’ve had and I don’t regret it one bit. This month was probably hectic for everyone due to finals but thankfully we are done until next semester. I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and spent much bonding time with your friends and families. See you soon! Yours truly,
Marianne Lagasca Bulletin Editor 2013-14

Christmas Parade
@ Montrose On December 7th, Key Club and Prom Plus were able to join forces and give a helping hand for the yearly Christmas Parade. We first met together behind City Bank at 4:30 and signed up. We received a colored jacket. The red indicated that you were going to hold a sign and yellow indicated you were just going to help wherever necessary. An adult in charge divided us up into groups and told each group a specific location where we had to be. In the red group, we walked over to the area where a smaller group, consisting of 2-3 people, where given a sign to hold throughout the parade. The signs are the names of those that donated to support the parade. After being assigned a sign, the coordinator put the small groups into a specific order. We waited for a couple of hours, drinking hot chocolate to warm us up until the parade officially started. The coordinator told each group when they had to go into the parade. When it came up to my group, we walked at a steady pace to make sure we kept up with the other people in the parade. It was a joy to see the little kids and the many families watching the parade. This event was full of Christmas spirit and I can’t wait to volunteer again next year!

Past Events . . . Jingle Bell Run @ Memorial Park During December key clubbers gathered and met at the Americana to help with the Jingle Bell Run for arthritis. This run had many volunteers not only from key club, but also other clubs from different schools. At five o’clock in the chilly morning, there were many complaints about it, however everyone was prepared to work hard on this day. In the beginning volunteers were separated to various booths, such as arts and crafts, snacks, registration, etc. Some were given posts as to point to which directions runners should head toward. And others were posted to the medals station, where in the beginning the volunteers start to open the medals and later on distribute them to the runners at the finish line. However all the volunteers had one similar job, which was to cheer on the runners throughout the race and keep their spirits up and not let them give up. At the event there were many booths set up for the runners to enjoy. Like the arts and crafts booth where runners could make all sorts of crafts. This booth allowed runners to have tattoos and create souvenirs that will help them remember this event. There were necklaces runners could make, jingle bells that were distributed, and drawings everyone could draw. There was also a bounce house where kids, adults, and volunteers enjoyed very much. The snacks that were given were also very delicious and were generously handed out. This event had many different, but fun things that helped occupy the runner before the main event.

Rose Float Decorating
@ Pasadena On the Saturday of December 28, hundreds of volunteers from all over Southern California convened at the Rose Bowl in order to help in completing the beautiful floats for this year’s Rose Parade. Right away there is a line of just volunteers spanning a whole street length. All of these volunteers attended to take part in an eight-hour shift so they all know there is much work to be done and they are eager to do the work. After signing in, volunteers made their way into the warehouses where all of the floats were being held. Immediately, other volunteers can already be seen bustling around and climbing floats to complete decorating. After instruction, the first job to be done was have all the volunteers sit at tables and begin cutting the petals off of, literally, thousands of yellow flowers. Despite this job being very lengthy and tedious, we were still able to socialize with our fellow volunteers. Once the job is complete, some volunteers are pulled away to take part in other tasks while the rest are left watching everyone else work. When our group was finally given a job, we had the task of dusting off one of the smaller floats which I suppose wasn’t too bad. Once completed, we were assigned my favorite job of thee day. We were lead outside to a group of tents where all the roses for the parade are held where our job was to cut the roses and prepare them for the floats. Jobs were separated into flower-cutters and runners who bring the flowers to them. Both jobs were actually fun and together they inspired teamwork. Overall, the experience was a good one which inspired a greater admiration for the Rose Parade.

Member of the Month
When it comes to dedication and wonderful effort, Cindy Ye is probably one of the best candidates. Cindy is really gentle amongst her peers and demonstrates humility in all aspects. But don’t get me wrong here: she may seem quiet, but Cindy has a strong and willing heart to serve the community‌ and even the Division itself! She, a proud Starfish, is part of the Division 3 North Leadership Team, working long hours to provide the best for our club. Cindy is also very diligent, attending service events such as the Rose Float decorations, among almost all of the other events provided at our school and for the division. It is quite enjoyable to work alongside Cindy, so if you have a chance, buddy up the next time you see her!
Officer of the Month
Responsible, enthusiastic, and kind are all the words that describe our school’s Key Club president Corliss Kanazawa. She is the modle of dedication and excellence and encourages all other officers to follow in her example as she always puts Key Club on top her priority even during the busiest and most stressful times in her senior year. In this month of December of holiday cheers, Corliss organized a memorable officer social in the BJ’s restaurant where all twenty five school and district members gathered and also held a delightful Secret Santa gift exchange. Almost never failing to attend all events, and always trying to promote an atmosphere of family between the members as well as the officers. Corliss continues to show herself to be a true leader of service in the Kiwanis family.
