GUIDE TO GEORGIA / www.guidetogeorgia.com / June/July 2009

ANTIQUES, MUSEUMS, AND ART National Science Center’s Fort Discovery Georgia has the distinction of being home to the National Science Center which was founded in the 1980’s by an Act of Congress with the mission to inspire the youth of America. National outreach is in many formats. The most visible, perhaps, are the Mobile Discovery Centers (MDC’s), 18-wheelers which roll down America’s highways, interstates, and back roads delivering interactive science demonstrations to children at schools, Native American Indian reservations, and parking lots. Kids see the space shuttle plastered on the outside, climb the ramp, sit on benches that fold out from the walls, and get excited about sonic glass breaking, Van de Graaff electricity generators, and other kid-friendly, cool stuff! For information phone 706-821-0200 or 800-325-5445 or visit www.NationalScienceCenter.org. Ready for some youth-oriented science, technology, engineering, and math fun today? Head to Fort Discovery, the National Science Center headquarters in downtown Augusta on the banks of the Savannah River. With over 250 hands-on exhibits, live science demonstrations, rides like the Human Gyro and Moon Walk, you’ll know immediately that you’ve arrived at “The Smart Place to Have Fun!” Open daily 10 a.m.5 p.m./ Sundays noon-5 p.m.

Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon There's no need to swelter this summer! Cool off at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, and let science sizzle instead. Sizzling Science Summer takes place June 9-26 and July 14-31 from Tuesdays through Saturdays at 11 a.m. Activities are free with regular museum admission unless otherwise noted. Teaching Tuesdays will be presented by “Dr. A,” (AKA university professor Dr. Craig Anderson). Wonder-full Wednesdays will welcome kids ages 2 to 5 and their adults to the Polar Bear Den for stories, art, and science. (Children/$3 and adults and MAS members free.) Thrilling Thursdays will feature a Science Surprise: visitors can try out an interactive science activity somewhere in the museum. Feeding Fridays will let adventurous youngsters watch the Mini Zoo staff feed the animals. Due to the “ick” factor, this activity is not recommended for very young or sensitive visitors. Friday Night Lights will offer a special telescope session in the Museum’s observatory from 8-10 p.m. Science Disguise Saturdays will feature demonstrations and hands-on experiments including Reptile Rendezvous on June 20 and Bug Day on July 18. For information, visit www.masmacon.com or call 478-477-3232.

Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth “Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has over 90 pieces of retired railway rolling stock: trains from the 1920’s and 1950’s including vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and private cars, WWII troop kitchen, railway post office car, wooden freight cars, baggage cars, cabooses, and maintenance of way equipment. The museum is home to MARTA’s historic bus fleet which includes busses from many of the predecessor systems to MARTA. Train rides aboard restored cabooses are normally available for $1 per person. The railway museum is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10-5 from April-Dec. With ad on page 8 one free museum admission with admission of equal or greater value. 3595 Peachtree Rd. 770-4762013. www.srmduluth.org. A Locomotive Celebration will be held June 27-28. There will be temporary locomotive tattoos, a locomotive hunt, food, and crafts for children.

Peaches are one of the most popular fruits in the United States and have always been symbolic of something good as indicated by the saying “pretty as a peach.” The State of Georgia is indeed fortunate to be so well known for such a wonderful commodity (although anyone who has ever been whipped by a Georgia peach twig may not think so.) When traveling in Georgia from mid-May through August, the Peach Blossom Trail BusinessWeek’s Best Place to Raise a Family offers several roadside stands where visitors • Air Force Command Band can find sweet Georgia peaches! During their Independence Day Concert travels down the trail, they can see thousands featuring THE MIRACLES – of acres of peach orchards.
