Nestled in the small rural town of Warm Springs are six historical sites that had a deep impact on President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. His visits to Warm Springs began in 1924 and continued until his passing at The Little White House in 1945. It has been said that Roosevelt came to Warm Springs to find a cure for polio, instead he found his soul.

COVER STORY

GGEORGIA uide To

Depression-weary Americans were just rekindling their love affair with the automobile when a marketing brainstorm by Rock City founder Garnet Carter turned some country barns into billboards that spread the word about the attraction’s charms. In 1935, he authorized Clark Byers to persuade farmers to let him paint an advertising message on their barns. Like most people who make history, Clark Byers had something else on his mind. When the young sign painter loaded his pickup with ladders and paintbuckets one day in 1936 and set out it would not have occurred to him that he would help define an era in American folk culture. But the 30-year odyssey which began that day made an unknown tourist attraction world famous, and the slogan “See Rock City” a household phrase Clark Byers painted the barns for three decades and became a legend in his own right by braving bulls, slippery roofs and lightning bolts. When he retired in 1969, he had painted some 900 barns in 19 states. For the last 22 years, many travelers have been utterly delighted and captivated, even charmed by The Enchanted Garden of Lights at Rock City. You and yours may choose your special path through the Garden where you will once again, through the telescope of memory, experience the joy, wonder, and peace of this magical garden of lights. Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights, which ON THE COVER features more than 30 holiday scenes, illuminated rock formations, and hundreds of thousands of lights, will become a nocturnal fairyland Nov. 17-Jan. 6. (See page 12.) This issue also includes information on an array of other holiday events throughout Georgia.

THE NATIONAL INFANTRY MUSEUM GLOBAL WAR ON TERRORISM MEMORIAL

The National Infantry Museum salutes thousands of service members who have served in the Global War on Terrorism since September 11, 2001. Service members include active duty, veterans, and those who died defending the county. The museum, located at 1775 Legacy Way in Columbus, unveiled its Global War on Terrorism Memorial Monday, Oct. 16, 2017. The memorial includes eight panels etched with the names of nearly 7,000 men and women who died fighting the war on terrorism. A 13-foot steel beam taken from the wreckage of the World Trade Center and donated to the museum by New York City firefighters sits atop the concrete columns representing the Twin Towers. Nine bronze figures representing an Infantry squad, illustrations of each service’s role in protecting the nation, and narrative panels chronicling the nation’s longest war are also featured. Choose and Cut Your Own Fresh Christmas Tree

–A Georgia Tradition– Find a tree farm near you. Tree farms are scattered all over the state of Georgia. Go to www.gacta.com and view the Farm Finder map showing the farm locations. Christmas trees and the environment. The Real Christmas tree is a renewable resource that cleans the air by using carbon dioxide to grow and reintroducing oxygen into the air. The young trees growing on the Christmas tree farm for only a few years will provide clean air, erosion control, and habitat for wildlife. The tree can be recycled. It is best to chip for mulch to be used in gardens or farms. Most local communities provide a recycling service drop-off location where the tree can be turned in after Christmas. The Christmas tree farm will replant the field with new trees after the older ones are cut. This keeps a supply of young trees growing in fields that normally not good for other crops. Some things to remember when buying your tree. Many people pick a tree that is too big for the space in their home. The trees in the field look smaller than they will in the home. Go by the size as measured. Ceilings in most homes are 8-9 feet high. It doesn’t make good sense to buy a tree that is 11 feet tall to fit into this space. You will ruin the shape of the tree by trimming the top or bottom to fit the room. Make sure the handle or base of the tree is long enough to fit your stand. Some stands require very little while others require up to a foot. Varieties of trees. Leyland Cypress is the Christmas tree that will not drop needles. They come in several varieties including: Leighton Green, Murray, Naylor’s Blue, Silver Dust and Castlewellan Gold. Some say these trees are hard to decorate. The limbs are not as strong as other varieties, so light weight ornaments and lights should be used. Murray and Naylor’s Blue have slightly stronger limbs. Leyland Cypress have very little tree smell. Carolina Sapphire, Blue Ice, and other Arizona Cypress have a stronger tree smell, but they will dry out sooner than Leyland or pine. Virginia Pine and White Pine are the standby Southern Christmas tree. Virginia Pine is a short needle with stiff branches and a strong pine smell. White Pine has a long needle with softer branches and a softer pine smell. Both make a beautiful Christmas tree. Red Cedar is the old time Georgia Christmas tree. It has a strong, pleasant cedar smell and a good shape. The limbs are not strong and will dry out sooner than other varieties. Red Cedar should not be cut more than two weeks before Christmas. Trees For Troops. The Christmas Spirit Foundation and FedEx Corp. delivered 19,200 Real Christmas trees to military families last year. Trees were donated by over 700 farms and delivered to 65 military bases in the USA and overseas.

Winter is Sweeter at Massee Lane Gardens Over a thousand varieties of camellias, the winter rose, burst into color every day from October through April. February is considered peak season, because the largest numbers of varieties bloom simultaneously, although plenty of blooms adorn the historic gardens in November, December, and January. A camellia care workshop will be held Jan. 27. The monthlong Festival of Camellias kicks off on Feb. 3 with free admission. The festival continues with weekly workshops on gardening, the Boehm porcelain collection, and camellia photography. The festival includes a competitive camellia show, professionally guided tours and boxed luncheons. Tales from the Altamaha 2018 in Lyons Listen… can you hear it? The rustle of the wind in the trees, birds chirping in flight, and the waters of the Altamaha? It’s calling, and once again you will have the opportunity to be transported back to a time when Southern traditions were just being forged. This award-winning Georgia folk-life play is drawn from the writings of Colonel T. Ross Sharpe, a local attorney born and raised on the Altamaha River, who wrote a series of essays in the local newspaper during the 1950’s and 60’s about the settlers of the area around the river. Since 2005, Tales from the Altamaha has entertained audiences from all over the Southeast with a different selection of Colonel Ross’ stories interwoven with bluegrass music performed by the River Rat Review Band. Tales from the Altamaha takes the stage April 19-28, 2018. A project of Lyons Main Street, Tales from the Altamaha continues to be a cultural celebration steeped in the Southern traditions unique to rural South Georgia. Make plans now to embark on the ride of a lifetime as you experience the lives, loves, losses, scandals, and just plain ol’ gossip that are Tales from the Altamaha. Tickets on sale in December 2017, $10–$20. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more. Arts in Meriwether Yes, absolutely – we have a growing arts presence guided by the work of an Arts Meriwether volunteer team. With a goal of creating an artistic community through events; artist recruitment; downtown development and partnerships, we have had a great first year. Cedar Hill was our first musical event, with a wonderful night on the grounds of the Cotton Pickin’ Fair in Gay, GA. Following this, we hosted 20 professional artists for a three-day PleinAir Event. Artists were hosted in the community and provided a variety of outdoor sites and structures to choose from. One of the event highlights was the engagement of our elementary school children with the professional artists. Our first culinary arts experience is our Meriwether Menu on November 4th featuring a farm-to-table menu under the iconic Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge. Cedar Hill The county has also developed a strong partnership with Serenbe Playhouse in Chattahoochee Hills, with them bringing Charlotte’s Web to our community in February. V An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “ Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “ Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2: 9-14 November / December 2017 / www.guidetogeorgia.com / GUIDE TO GEORGIA
