ANTIQUES, MUSEUMS, AND ART Tellus: Northwest Georgia Science Museum in Cartersville Tellus: Northwest Georgia Science Museum opened its doors to the public Monday, Jan. 12, 2009. The 120,000 square foot museum features four incredible galleries that include gems, dinosaurs, space capsules, minerals, and a special kid’s interactive area. The four galleries–the Weinman Mineral Gallery, Fossil Gallery, Science in Motion, and Collins Family My Big Backyard–feature exhibits and activities that cannot be found under one roof anywhere else in the country. An 82-foot long Apatosaurus looms over visitors in the Great Hall. The replica Wright Brothers’ Flyer dominates the Science in Motion Gallery. A giant tree reaches to the ceiling in the Collins Family My Big Backyard, inviting children of all ages inside to learn about weather. Tellus is an expansion of the Weinman Mineral Museum, which received hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over Georgia in its 24 years of existence. School children on field trips made up a significant portion of the visitation, and Tellus will continue that tradition. More than 23,000 students are already signed up to visit the museum on field trips during the first five months that Tellus is open. For more information visit www.tellusmuseum.org or phone 770606-5700 or e-mail info@tellusmuseum.org.
National Science Center’s Fort Discovery in Augusta National Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure will be on exhibit through April 26 at the National Science Center’s Fort Discovery in Augusta. Learn from archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass who maps pyramids in Egypt; wildlife biologist Dr. J. Michael Fay who trekked 2000 miles across the African Congo documenting rare and vanishing wildlife; shipwreck specialist Phil Masters who is excavating a ship which once belonged to Blackbeard; planetary geologist Nathalie Cabrol with data returned by the Mars Rovers; wayfinder Nainoa Thompson who travels throughout the Pacific islands relying on the stars; climatologist Dr. Claire Parkinson explaining the weather; and Amelia Earhart, the famous record-breaking female pilot of the early 1900’s who mysteriously disappeared in the Pacific Ocean. Go inside the cockpit of a full-scale Lockheed Electra, the model Earhart flew; and see her goggles and the medal presented to her by the National Geographic Society. 74th Annual Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens The 74th annual Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens will be held March 26-29. Presented by the Women of Christ Church and the Historic Savannah Foundation, the tour offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the beautiful architecture, interiors, and gardens of historic Savannah. Tour proceeds support the community outreach efforts of the church and the preservation projects of the foundation. Events will include lunches at Lady & Sons Restaurant and Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House, afternoon teas, trolley tours, and evening events. Seminars will focus on Savannah historic preservation and restoration, antiques, decorating, and Southern cooking. In addition to the Savannah homes, the tour will showcase homes from the West Victorian historic neighborhood which has shaded, treelined streets and picturesque homes built primarily in the carpenter style popular during the late 1870’s and 1880’s. Restoration of this transitional neighborhood began in the late 1970’s and today has an eclectic mix of young and old, condos and single family homes, and local businesses. A full listing of the walking tours of private homes and gardens, special events, and lectures will be available at www.savannahtourofhomes.org. Ticket sales are expected to be brisk, with limited availability to special events. For information, tickets, or brochures, write 18 Abercorn Street, Savannah 31401, phone 912-234-8054, or visit the website.

Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail
Photo Courtesy Ga. Dept. of Econ. Dev.
You can find peach trees in bloom on any given day through the first of April somewhere along Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail which runs along US 41-341, parallel to I-75, and offers north/south travelers in the center of the state an alternative to the traffic and congestion of the interstate. Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail was the first trail to be recognized by the State Legislature. For almost six weeks peach blossoms transform the rolling plains into a sea of pink and white. The majority of blooms can be found in Peach (Fort Valley & Byron) and Crawford (Roberta) Counties. Blooms are viewable in limited areas in most of the counties along the trail, and a new orchard was recently planted in Henry County (Hampton & Stockbridge). Generally the farther south you are, the earlier the blooming season. Also the varieties of fruit determine the blooming times. Mother Nature has the final say as she dictates the minimum of chill hours (time that the temperature is below 40-45 degrees), abundant sun, and warming temperature before blooming begins. All of the counties–Clayton, Henry, Lamar, Crawford, Monroe, Peach, and Houston– have unique offerings from the stately antebellum mansions in Clayton and the Atlanta Speedway in Henry to the Museum of Aviation in Houston and Massee Lane Gardens in Peach. All attractions along the trail can be found within a 2½ hour drive of the Atlanta area. For more information visit www.peachblossomtrail.com. GUIDE TO GEORGIA / www.guidetogeorgia.com / March 2009

Fitzgerald Wild Chicken Festival The exotic and beautiful Burmese chickens are a familiar part of the downtown Fitzgerald scene. Resembling fighting game chickens, they sport brilliant orange and yellow ruffs and gleaming black tail feathers. The Burmese chickens were released all over the State in the 1960’s by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as an additional game bird; but those released at the Ocmulgee River made their way to downtown Fitzgerald. There they have a love-hate relationship with residents, some of whom buy seed and feed them while others chase them out of gardens with a broom! The chickens wake up folks, create minor traffic problems, and, some claim, even keep the bugs away. In celebration of these chickens, Fitzgerald will hold its annual Wild Chicken Festival on Saturday, March 21, in the historic downtown with arts & crafts, food, fun, and more. There will be a pancake breakfast beginning at 6 a.m.; a 5K Wild Chicken Sprint at 8 a.m.; a Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby at 9 a.m.; a pageant at 10 a.m.; a Cheehaw Park nature show at 11 a.m.; a chicken crowing contest at noon; the Dance South dancers at 1 p.m., a wing eating contest at 2 p.m., and a group chicken dance at 4 p.m. For info visit www.fitzgeraldga.org or phone 800-386-4642 or e-mail fitztourism@mchsi.com.
