Georgia JugFest in Knoxville Middle Georgia will celebrate its folk pottery traditions May 19-21 in Knoxville, Crawford County, at the combined Georgia JugFest and Old Knoxville Days. For more than 100 years pottery was a big part of the area’s economy. Now it is collectible as craft, folk art, and history. A three-day antique and vintage pottery exhibit will open May 18, and the community kiln will be firing all that day. On May 20, a Pottery Lunch & Learn will focus on the pottery of Crawford County and Middle Georgia. Tickets are needed for that event but not for the Pottery ID that follows. Everyone can bring in old pottery for identification. On Friday night the festival’s Peaches, Peanut and Pigs amateur cook-off will reward local and area cooks with prizes in Brunswick Stew, peach cobbler, and peanut dessert categories. The main event on May 21 will feature the continuing exhibit, pottery and handcraft vendor sales, quilting display, benefit pottery auction, kiln sale, antique car and tractor show, lawn mower races, historic skills demonstrations, Brown Jug Children’s FunFest, student art exhibit, and historic building tours. Pancake breakfast and pork chop plates will top the list of homemade food, and homegrown musicians will provide live entertainment. Everything but the Lunch and Learn is free. For details, visit www.gajugfest.com or call 478-836-3825.

Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail You can find peach trees in bloom on any given day from mid-February through the first of April somewhere along Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail which runs along US 41341, parallel to I-75, and offers north/south travelers in the center of the state an alternative to the traffic and congestion of the interstate. For almost six weeks peach blossoms transform the rolling plains into a sea of pink and white. The majority of blooms can be found in Peach (Fort Valley & Byron) and Crawford (Roberta) Counties, but blooms are viewable in limited areas in most of the counties along the trail. Generally the farther south you are, the earlier the blooming season. Also the varieties of fruit determine the blooming APRIL times. Mother Nature has the final say as she 30 – PORT WENTWORTH – Stand Up for dictates the minimum of chill hours (time that America Day Festival, downtown. 912-965-1999. the temperature is below 40-45 degrees), 30 – THOMSON – Classic Car Show, Depot. abundant sun, and warming temperature 706-597-1000. before blooming begins. 30 – WATKINSVILLE – Washington Farms Beginning in May peaches will be available Strawberry Festival. 706-769-0627. at packing facilities, roadside stands, and 30-May 1 – CLINTON – War Days in Old markets.
