P Theatre P Music P Dance P Experience Tales from the Altamaha in Lyons For two weeks in the Spring of 2008 you can be transported back to a time when Southern traditions were just being forged. With a cast of over 100 volunteers, Tales from the Altamaha will transform real life stories based on the writings of Col. T. Ross Sharpe into an unforgettable theater experience you won’t want to miss. This Georgia folk-life play is sure to be a crowd pleaser with its blend of comedy, music, and drama. Macon Museum of Arts & Sciences Gullah/Geechee: An Enduring Culture, thru May 4, focuses on the history of the enslaved populations who created this African American culture from the 18th-20th centuries. Essential to the colonial rice plantations were the labor of Africans and their knowledge of rice cultivation. Living in isolated areas the Gullah (South Carolina) and Geechee (Georgia) people developed their own culture and language, a blend of West Africa and their survival adaptation in a new land. Stories and songs were used to teach children lessons; cooking adapted West African techniques to American foods; and words from Africa, the West Indies, and America all developed into a new culture, one that is threatened today. The C. L. Morehead Collection of African Artifacts, thru May 4, includes masks, cooking and farming implements, clothing, baskets, and personal accessories that provide a glimpse of the world the Gullah/Geechee people left behind when taken to America. The museum is open daily. Visit www.masmacon.com or call 478-477-3232.

March in Georgia Colquitt – Its Story in Murals Colquitt, Georgia’s Millennium Mural Project was started in 1999 with the completion of their first mural, “The Peace Wall,” at Miller County Middle School. Since then, 11 murals have been painted in Colquitt, each one depicting stories that honor and preserve the community’s history. To create Colquitt’s 10th mural, “Summer in the Swamp,” students at the New Life Learning Center shared their memories of fishing, playing, and other experiences at Spring Creek Park. The artist Cheryl Hardin listened to the stories and designed a concept for the mural. It was sketched on 13 panels, and the students worked with Hardin to paint the panels which were placed on their building to form the completed mural. The New Life Learning Center welcomes approximately 150 students a week who are actively involved in after-school art programs. The Mural Project has gained Colquitt recognition throughout the state and the world. In 2006, the State Legislature declared Colquitt as Georgia’s First Mural City. Colquitt will also host the 2010 Global Mural, Arts and Cultural Tourisms Association Conference on October 26-29, 2010. Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail You can find peach trees in bloom on any given day through the first of April somewhere along Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail which runs along US 41-341, parallel to I-75, and offers north/south travelers in the center of the state an alternative to the traffic and congestion of the interstate. Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail was the first trail to be recognized by the State Legislature. For almost six weeks peach blossoms transform the rolling plains into a sea of pink and white. The majority of blooms can be found in Peach (Fort Valley & Byron) and Crawford (Roberta) Counties. Blooms are viewable in limited areas in most of the counties along the trail, and a new orchard was recently planted in Henry County (Hampton & Stockbridge). Generally the farther south you are, the earlier the blooming season. Also the varieties of fruit determine the blooming times. Mother Nature has the final say as she dictates the minimum of chill hours (time that the temperature is below 40-45 degrees), abundant sun, and warming temperature before blooming begins. All of the counties – Clayton, Henry, Lamar, Crawford, Monroe, Peach, and Houston – have unique offerings from the stately antebellum mansions in Clayton and the Atlanta Speedway in Henry to the Museum of Aviation in Houston and Massee Lane Gardens in Peach. All attractions along the trail can be found within a 2½ hour drive of the Atlanta area. For more information visit www.peachblossomtrail.com.

St. Patrick’s Day honors Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who was a missionary in the 5th century AD and was credited with converting Ireland to Christianity. One popular tradition is wearing green clothing. The main symbol associated with the holiday is the shamrock, a small three-leafed clover or clover-like plant. According to legend, St. Patrick used the shamrock, because of its three leaves, to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish people.
