HHLABOR DAY EVENTSHH Labor Day Catfish Festival in Kingsland The 31st Annual Labor Day Catfish Festival will be held in downtown Kingsland August 31September 2. The festival will kick off Saturday at 7am with a 5K run sponsored by the Camden Miracle League (www.camdenmiracleleague.com). More than 75 booths featuring handmade original arts & crafts, antiques, and collectibles will be open Saturday and Sunday from 12-6pm and Monday from 9am-6pm. There will also be an antique classic car, truck, and tractor exhibition by the Southeast Georgia Car and Truck Club.

Free outdoor performances on Saturday through Monday will feature many bands and entertainers. Visitors are encouraged to take lawn chairs and beach blankets. Reserved seating for the elderly and disabled will be available.

The weekend menu will include succulent Southern Fried Catfish or Catfish Nuggets, grits or fries, coleslaw, hushpuppies, and iced tea.

Serving time will begin at 12pm each day. A variety of other festival foods will be available; and the Kingsland Lions Club will serve a pancake breakfast on Labor Day. The Labor Day parade at 10am will feature Kingsley the Lion, Cecil the Catfish, and the Camden County High School Marching Band. The amusement area, open from Saturday noon through Monday evening, will feature pony rides, kiddie train, inflatables, bungee jump, and other attractions. METRO ATLANTA Concerts at Heritage Sandy Springs This Summer Heritage Sandy Springs will present Concerts by the Springs one Sunday evening each month through September. The concerts, which are free and open to the public, will be held from 7-8:30pm at Heritage Green on The Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn, 6110 Bluestone Road, Sandy Springs.

Celebrating its 17th year, the 2013 season will offer something for all ages and audiences: June 2, Gwen Hughes & The Retro Jazz Kats (www.retrojazz kats.com); July 14, The A-Town A-List (www.atowna list.com); August 4, The Mustangs (www.the mustangs.net); and September 8, the Kinchafoonee Cowboys (www.kinchafooneecowboys.com).

A new endeavor at Heritage Sandy Springs this The A-Town A-List is in concert July 14. year will be Rhythm & Brews, an open-air happy hour series that invites a young and diverse audience to enjoy regional live music in a beautiful outdoor setting. The new series, Rhythm & Brews, embraces regional roots, presenting a variety of musical genres of both up-and-coming and established artists whose origins are deeply rooted in the region. Concerts will be held through August on the last Thursday of each month at The Sandy Springs Society Entertainment Lawn at Heritage Green. Doors will open at 6pm with the concerts from 6:30-8pm. Admission will be $5 for ages 21 and up, $2 for ages 13-20, and free for ages 12 and under. Performing will be von Grey on June 27, The Deadfields on July 25, and Old You on August 29.

METRO ATLANTA Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth “Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has an extensive collection of railway rolling stock from the last two centuries, including vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and private cars, a WWII troop kitchen, a railway post office car, freight cars, and cabooses.

Pride of place goes to Superb, a private car used

by Presidents Harding and Wilson for official travel.

The museum is also home to historic buses from MARTA and its predecessor systems, as well as steam tractors, vintage cabs and firefighting equipment. A restored 1871 passenger depot marks the museum entrance.

The annual Locomotive Celebration on June 8-9 will include temporary caboose tattoos, locomotive hunt, refreshments, and a kids’ craft corner.

Trains, Trucks, and Tractors on August 3-4 will offer refreshments, temporary tattoos, craft corner for children, hayrides, and exhibits of tractors, trucks and other vehicles, both old and new. The second Thursday of each month features programs geared towards preschoolers.

METRO ATLANTA Scott Antique Market in Atlanta The Scott Antique Market at the Atlanta Expo Centers, the world’s largest monthly indoor antique show, features two buildings stocked full of pretty much every antique imaginable. With 366,000 square feet to explore, and over 3,500 booths, plus outdoor shopping and even a courtyard of merchandise, it’s almost impossible to leave without finding exactly what you’re looking for, according to the show’s organizers. All things antique wind up at the Scott Antique Market – antique furniture, vintage hardware, rare art, stunning glassware, heirloom silver, incredible jewelry, and so much more.

The Scott Antique Market, described as “America’s favorite treasure hunt,” always takes place the second weekend of every month at the Atlanta Expo Centers which straddle I-285 at Exit 55. Sporting Events Chattahoochee River Summer Splash The coolest way to escape the heat this summer will be at the 6th Annual Summer Splash at the Chattahoochee River on Saturday, July 27. Guests are invited to bring their kayak, canoe, or raft, or rent one from the local outfitters. The six mile float lasts about three hours, depending upon the river’s current and amount of paddling.

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Sandy Springs Hospitality & Tourism host this signature event each year, and this year they have teamed up with Cooper Global Transportation and the City of Sandy Springs. Make sure you register early for the event to ensure your spot on the river.

After the float there will be music, food, and fun waiting for everyone to enjoy at Powers Island.

Parking for Summer Splash is at Powers Island, and a shuttle will transport participants to Morgan Falls to begin the float. Register for the Summer Splash by calling the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) at 678 538-1200 or visiting on the website at www.nps.gov/chat.

The Cool History programs, designed to educate and entertain visitors, are living history events that depict daily life in the Civil War sea services.

They will begin June 1 with “Ship Stories: The Story of the USS/CSS Atlanta.” Hear the story of the construction, service, and capture of the CSS Atlanta and her subsequent service as the USS Atlanta.

“The Medical Navy: Yellow Fever” on July 6 will focus on Civil War medicine at sea through a variety of living history, reenactment, and multimedia programs. During combat, the ship’s surgeon would typically use the dining table in the officers’ wardroom since it was usually the only large table onboard the ship. After surgery, the table would be wiped off and dinner served.

“Technology” on August 3 will look at inventions and technological advancements in navies both North and South during the Civil War.

Peach Blossom Trail Peaches are one of the most popular fruits in the United States and have always been symbolic of something good as indicated by the saying “pretty as a peach.” The State of Georgia is indeed fortunate to be so well known for such a wonderful commodity (although anyone who has ever been whipped by a Georgia peach twig may not think so.) Georgia was named the Peach State because it was the birthplace of the commercial peach industry.

When traveling in Georgia from mid-May through August, the Peach Blossom Trail offers several roadside stands where visitors can find sweet Georgia peaches. During their travels down the trail, they can see thousands of acres of peach orchards. There are several farms that offer tours into the orchards, providing a close look at the peach trees and information on the history of how this fruit from China made its way to Georgia.

The Peach Blossom Trail runs parallel to I-75. Get off the beaten path, and travel the Trail.

Perspectives 2013: 11th Annual Georgia Pottery Invitational The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation will host Perspectives 2013: 11th Annual Georgia Pottery Invitational from August 31-September 18 at OCAF at 34 School St., Watkinsville. Over 5,000 pieces of functional handmade pottery will be offered for sale from 50 of Georgia’s finest potters. It will be open daily, including Labor Day, from 10am5pm. Admission and parking will be free except for the opening Gala on August 30. Admission to the Gala will be $10 and will be held from 6-9pm. Food and drinks will be provided along with music from Squat, a well-known jazz band.

Various pottery demonstrations, gallery talks, and open studios will be offered on different weekends. The Hiawassee River Railroad Ride the historic Hiwassee River Railroad scenic rail excursion through the unspoiled Cherokee National Forest, along the beautiful Hiwassee River, and through the secluded Hiwassee River Gorge. All trips feature the engineering marvel, the Great Hiwassee Loop. At the top you’ll pass over a bridge 62 feet above the tracks on which you’ve just traveled as the rails negotiate a spiraling formation.

Big Haynes Creek Wildlife Festival in Conyers The 7th Annual Big Haynes Creek Wildlife Festival on August 24-25 will delight the entire family with its wildlife exhibits, reptile shows, birds of prey, storytelling, living history, arts, crafts and more. The festival will be held on the Grand Prix Plaza at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, just off I-20.

Quasi, a sweet little vulture, will demonstrate why vultures are an important part of the environment. A part of the Winged Ambassadors display and Birds of Prey Show, Quasi was rescued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and was unable to be returned to the wild after being raised by humans.

Guests can also take a ride like no other – on Rufus the camel. Sawgrass, in the Living History section, will demonstrate how Indians lived off the land, utilized various tools, and became skilled at survival while preserving the natural world around them.

There will be a scavenger hunt, art activity, artist market, Wildlife Wonders animal show, Georgia State Frisbee Dog Show, and Backyard Wildlife Photo Contest. Walk through the Reptile Wagon at the Southeastern Reptile Rescue display and hear about Jason Clark’s wild and crazy reptile rescue adventures.

Butternut Creek Festival in Blairsville The 15th Annual Butternut Creek Arts & Crafts Festival, sponsored by the High Country Artisans, Inc., will be held July 20-21 from 10am-5pm at Meeks Park in Blairsville.

Stroll the shady walk or sit under the music tarp while enjoying arts, crafts, demonstrations, and live entertainment. Over seventy of the finest artists and craftsmen, offering unique and original handcrafted art, have been selected to line the winding shady shores of Butternut Creek. Demonstrations in blacksmithing, chain saw art, pedal powered lathe, and basket weaving can be seen. Enjoy the performances of local bands including Highway 76, Fast gear, Victorious, No Name Band, Chloe Senguine, and the Crista Lynn Band, along with the Blue Ridge Dulcimer Players. Food vendors will be serving a wide variety of foods.

This is the fifth year this volunteer, non-profit organization, a small group of less than twenty members, has had their festival named as one of the “Top 20 Events” by the S.E. Tourism Society.

Byron Herbert Reece Farm & Heritage Center in Blairsville Byron Herbert Reece was a hill and bottomland farmer who cultivated words and harvested poetry; he became the voice and the soul of a region known as Appalachia. The Byron Herbert Reece Farm consists of the remaining 9.3 acres of the Reece family property and is dedicated to enhancing his writings and his way of life with emphasis on his love of nature and his attachment to farming.

The Center includes a welcome center with a gift shop and museum; a Poetry Trail that highlights Reece poems inscribed on stone boulders; Mulberry Hall, the poet’s writing studio; and five barn buildings housing 13 exhibits which feature home and farm artifacts, implements, and enterprises that portray life in Appalachia during the first half of the 20th century. The Reece Gallery & Theater in the loft of the main barn features displays of photographs, books, copies of Reece’s writings, and other Reece material, along with the showing on a large screen TV of the award-winning video, Voices … Finding Byron Herbert Reece. Visitors can also stroll down a scenic walking trail along beautiful Wolf Creek.

A family of five may enter for a fee of $15, with additional family members paying the amount applicable to his/her age.

Docent-led tours will be available by reservation to large groups for a fee. A pavilion can be rented for weddings, reunions, picnics and other group outings. The Real Squeal: Lyons Barbeque & Music Festival Lyons Better Hometown will host its fourth annual barbeque festival, The Real Squeal, in Lyons October 11-12. The Real Squeal is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned event with both professional and amateur barbeque competitions. The amateur contest will kick off the festival on Friday, October 11, in downtown Lyons with a street dance, great barbeque, traditional festival food, a classic car cruise-in, and fireworks.

On Saturday, October 12, head to Partin Park for the professional barbeque competition. Many of the professional barbeque teams will compete in the People’s Choice competition, in which patrons can purchase tickets to taste and judge pork shoulder entries. Activities in the park will include arts and crafts, live music, a kid’s creative play area, a professional chainsaw show and auction, a classic car show, and primitive skills demonstrations. Take your artifacts to the Indian Artifacts Shows to have them dated and documented by an archeologist, and try your hand at discovering more treasures.
