A Tour of Southern Ghosts at Stone Mountain Park The 32nd annual A Tour of Southern Ghosts will be presented by ART Station at Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park Thursdays through Sundays, October 13-29. Meet professional storytellers weaving their tales of famous Southern Ghosts along the lantern-lit paths of the Antebellum Plantation grounds at Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park. A Tour of Southern Ghosts is held during the Halloween season so the stories are a little scary, many times humorous, but never too frightening and always appropriate for young children. Each night will offer a different cast of six storytellers, which means audience members may return to A Tour of Southern Ghosts on additional nights to hear a new collection of stories. The first 45-minute tour will begin at 7pm with a new tour beginning every 10 minutes. Tickets may be purchased on tour nights at the box office of the Antebellum Plantation beginning at 6:45pm. Ticket prices will be $17 for adults or $12/adult presale and $8 for children 12 and under. For more information, call 770-469-1105 or visit www.artstation.org.

GUIDE TO GEORGIA / www.guidetogeorgia.com / September/October 2017

Swamp Gravy: Listen Here For twenty-five years, community members in Colquitt have been creating their own success story. They’ve collectively written, composed, and performed original storytelling theatre, and in doing so have revitalized their dying town. The show is called Swamp Gravy, a reference to a tomatobased concoction that, like the piece itself, varies in ingredients and is full of local flavor. This community-based play uses true stories told by the residents of Miller County, and though these stories are from small-town Georgia, they reveal some deeper truths about humanity as a whole. With the aid of professional theater collaborators, Swamp Gravy is performed by approximately 100 volunteer citizens of the town each year. This October, Swamp Gravy will return with a brand-new production, Swamp Gravy: Listen Here, written by Will Murdock and Susanne Reynolds. Performances will be October 6-28, 2017 and March 2-24, 2018 on Fridays at 7:30pm and Saturdays at 2 and 6pm. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.swampgravy.com or by calling 229-758-5450. Group rates are available. ST. MARYS LITTLE THEATRE

Three words that change your life: “you have cancer.”

by Cheryl Bates

Once learning that I had cancer, I went from angry to grateful. You feel devastated but you are not in it alone. I learned to be in love with life again. There is hope for living and doing well with the disease. Be still. Be thankful for all of life’s blessings in the midst of breast cancer. You learn what is important in life. You learn to appreciate each day more. And as weird as it may sound, it is a gift. It’s enabled me to understand so much more about life, about myself, and the people I love. And now I can offer help to others making the same journey. Going through cancer changes you. Challenges are opportunities. I credit faith with giving me the strength to not just endure but thrive in the face of breast cancer. Never give up on your visions and dreams. This challenge in my life is part of the agenda that God has for me – not a detour in life. I don’t have to go through an experience like this in a state of fear. God’s presence is already there. I need to use this experience to take me into waters deep enough to receive a rich blessing from the experience but not so deep that I am of no use to others.

The Sonshine Sisters of Manchester, Georgia, is a group of breast cancer survivors who meet to lift each other and to help others going through the same journey that they have already been. They have paid for mammograms for ladies who are not able to pay or have no insurance. Gas cards are given to those who are taking treatments. Always available are their listening ears. This group of amazing ladies will let you know that you are not in it alone. For more information contact 706457-1436 or bcbates1@windstream.net. Breast Cancer Awareness If you haven’t seen the abundance of pink-themed items splashed all over grocery stores and the internet each October, you may have been living under a rock because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month! It feels good to get involved. You will see Awareness inserts throughout this issue. It feels good to increase awareness. Several years ago, a high school friend and I crossed paths after many years. Our friendship renewed and deepened. I learned of her journey through the breast cancer gauntlet and have been inspired by her faith, her courage, determination, and commitment that all in her path will not endure their gauntlet alone. She and other local warriors (breast cancer survivors) joined together as the Sonshine Sisters to support not only each other, but others at a turning point in their lives. As a marketing executive for a local hospital, the Sonshine Sisters and I joined forces to pink everything in October from football players to pumpkins and candy apples for Pinkoween with the goal of increasing not only awareness but pushing “early detection is your best protection”. I witnessed the giving spirit of these ladies. Their spirit meshed with one of my bucket list items: grow a pony tail. So I decided to get involved by growing my hair for the purpose of honoring them and meeting the needs of an unknown “older lady” who would appreciate a gray wig.

Jane, Ann, Bonnie, Loretta, Theresa, Cheryl. Amonymous guy in the middle (Does that pink shirt make me look fat?) Two years later, several of the Sunshine Sisters joined for the donation cutting.

The 12 inch gray pony tails were donated in honor of the Sonshine Girls to a California firm, the Silver Generation Fund, who will make a gray wig for our special lady. I felt so good. All this for the Sonshine Girls and Breast Cancer Awareness. Hip! Hip! Hooray! Feeling good about about spreading awareness falls short because Now I realize Awareness is not knowledge. Breast Cancer Awareness strategies and programs should stress on improving knowledge and developing the skills of women to facilitate the early detection of breast cancer. Please take some time to become your own advocate and understand the basics of breast cancer. The most important thing you can do for yourself this October is to become self aware. You must know your normal and take note of irregular activity. Make sure you are paying attention by looking, feeling & touching. Understanding may save your life and help with early detection. Give yourself . . . September/October 2017 / www.guidetogeorgia.com / GUIDE TO GEORGIA

Harmony Jubilee in Fitzgerald Fitzgerald, by nature of her founding, appeals to people from every state. At a time when the fires of hatred against Yankees still burned passionately in the hearts of most Georgians, a Union Soldiers’ Colony sprang up in a pine forest only ten miles from the scene of the capture of the President of the Confederacy. That Colony, which became the City of Fitzgerald, made history unparalleled in our nation. Celebrate a legacy of unity and diversity Nov. 10-11 at the Harmony Jubilee at Paulk Park in Fitzgerald. Ride in a hot air balloon, and see Fitzgerald and the surrounding areas from above. Both tethered and untethered rides will be offered (weather permitting). Friday will feature a private Wine & Cheese Tasting and Balloon Glow. On Saturday, there will be continuous musical entertainment, a Civil War encampment, and an Artisan Market showcasing quality handmade goods crafted by local artists. The Kid Zone will include a bouncy house and slide, coloring, hot air balloon photo-op, pet fashion show, and dancing. The library will offer a Curious George Meet & Greet and story times hourly from 10am-2pm. There will be a Balloon Glow at sunset. For information, phone 800-386-4642 or visit www.fitzgeraldga.org.

Mule Day at Callaway Plantation So just what is Mule Day all about? Mule Day is a celebration of rural farm life in Georgia from the late 1700’s to 1900. The mule was the “tractor” for these early farms. Imagine being without your car . . . that is how important the mule was for early farmers. There will be Mule Plowing Contests and a Mule Show with cash prizes. Throughout the day demonstrators will show how farms produced their own turpentine, wood shingles, pine straw baskets, soap, and so much more. A blacksmith will even be showing how horse shoes and nails were made. Mule Day takes place on the 56 acre Callaway Plantation and offers a glimpse into the bygone era of the agricultural South when working plantations speckled the land. Callaway Plantation tells the story of one family’s 200 year progression from a humble log cabin to a Greek-Revival mansion. With its collection of barns, school house and three restored homes, Callaway Plantation provides the perfect background for this annual festival. You can tour a one room school house, a 1785 log cabin, a 1790 Federal home, and an 1869 brick manor house. Join us on Oct. 14. from 9am-4pm for the 37th Annual Mule Day at Southern Heritage Festival, Callaway Plantation, 2160 Lexington Hwy, Washington. $10/car. Fall is For Planting As temperatures begin to cool in October and the “dog days” of summer have passed, it’s a great time to get back to the garden. It’s also an ideal time to add plants to your landscape including perennials, bulbs, shrubs and trees. Whether you garden in containers on a balcony or have a large suburban lot, the possibilities are unlimited

Clean Up First

Before you plant, clean up your garden. Cut back perennials and weed. Pull weeds before they flower and set seed. This will result in fewer weeds next spring. Make sure too to remove dead leaves that may harbor overwintering pest or disease spores; put these in the trash, not the compost pile. Apply a ½ inch to 1 inch of compost as a topdressing for your plants. Keep it away from stems and trunks.

Add Some Color

There are a variety of shrubs and trees that shine in the fall garden. Below is a list of a few plants to consider adding to your garden. For the best effect, combine evergreen and deciduous types. Do a little research. Select plants that are suited to your environment and group those with similar cultural requirements together.

Shrubs and Trees Beautyberry – Callicarpa americana or Callicarpa japonica – A deciduous shrub with brilliant purple or magenta fruits that appear in autumn on arching stems. Japanese maples – Acer palmatum cvs. – This deciduous tree comes in a variety of sizes and forms including weeping types. Japanese maples are noted for their brilliant autumn foliage in shades of red, orange and yellow. Callicarpa americana and Aster Raydon's Favorite Great for containers too. Sasanquas – Camellia sasanqua cvs. – An elegant and classic evergreen shrub that blooms in the autumn. Ideal for a hedge or informal screen. Tea Olive – Osmanthus fragrans – A large evergreen shrub with glossy foliage. The flowers are tiny but powerfully fragrant. Hollies – Ilex species and cultivars – There are a variety of evergreen hollies that offer handsome foliage and showy fruit, in shades of red and orange, that persists for months.

Bulbs Daffodils – Narcissus cvs.- There are hundreds of varieties of daffodils but a few standout for their performance in southern gardens. Because daffodils are poisonous animals leave them alone (there are always exceptions like hungry deer that may munch on foliage but not eat the bulb) and they are reliable perennials. By planting early, mid and late blooming selections, you will have blooms over a period of weeks in the spring. A bonus is that some selections are also fragrant. For best results, plant them in a well drained soil in a location that receives full sun. Narcissus ‘Cheerfulness’ Narcissus ‘February Gold’ Narcissus ‘Tete-a-Tete’ Celebrate fall in all its glory and get out in the garden and plant!

GUIDE TO GEORGIA / www.guidetogeorgia.com / September/October 2017

Been to the “Real” Woodbury Lately? For those of you who are Walking Dead fans, you know that Woodbury is the name of the fictitious town in some of the story lines from The Walking Dead. Did you know though, that there is a “real” Woodbury, geographically situated in West Central Georgia? And, it is loaded with things for you and your family to enjoy. There are three great antique shops right on the main downtown city block. These stores are all very popular and offer a treasure trove of antique furniture and accessories; garden décor; vintage clothing and lots of other unique items. Have lunch or dinner at the historic Blackbird Café located in one of Woodbury’s early 1900’s building right on the main block. They are open daily beginning at 11am until 9pm on weekdays and Friday and Saturday until 10pm. Their pimento cheese hamburger was selected for inclusion in the Georgia Eats Guide by the Georgia Department of Economic Development. You can also stroll around the corner and see their beautiful new mural featuring representative art from the town’s early years, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Flint River, the Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge and the “Cove’s Moonshine Legacy”. Across the street from the mural is the newly installed butterfly retreat. This garden, like others will become part of the Rosalyn Carter Butterfly Trail. Woodbury is also home to “The Real Woodbury Zombie Geoquest”, based on the hit television show The Walking Dead. You can explore haunted cemeteries, lonely roads and eerie hangouts to find the zombie caches. Fill your passport with body parts and weapons, then collect your trackable tag by turning in your passport at the Visitors’ Center in Warm Springs (1 Broad Street) or mailing it to P.O. Box 9, Warm Springs, GA. For more information on the “Real” Woodbury or other things to see and do in Meriwether County, contact the Warm Springs-Meriwether County Regional Visitors Center at 706-6553322, or e-mail meriwethertourism@windstream.net.
