Fitzgerald and the Blue & Gray Museum Located in a historical railroad depot, the museum tells through a documentary and more than 1200 artifacts the remarkable story of Fitzgerald and its Civil War roots. Fort Discovery in Augusta Explore the fascinating world and genius mind of Leonardo da Vinci whose scientific and technical drawings have captured people’s imagination for centuries. The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci is an interpretive exhibition of models built from his drawings and includes a flying machine, helicopter, parachute, anemometer, paddle wheel ship, military tank, and printing press. Several models are interactive. Fort Discovery will include several computer stations where visitors can virtually leaf through portions of da Vinci’s extraordinary journal, Codice Atlantico, which was devoted to mechanics, engineering, architecture, physics, and other disciplines. More than fifty 3-D models are duplicated in the virtual journal, and most have interactive capabilities which show how they work. Visitors can take a virtual tour of Da Vinci’s Workshop, a DVD bringing to life the rooms where Leonardo planned and produced his inventions and works of art. SAM Shortline Railroad Thomas the Tank Engine is set to roll into Crisp County for a Day Out With Thomas on October 17-19 and 24-26. Sorghum Festival in Blairsville The 39th annual Sorghum Festival will be held in Blairsville at Meeks Park for two great weekends on October 11-12 and October 18-19. Celebrating the lost art of sorghum syrup-making, the festival will have live demonstrations showing how the cane is crushed and cooked as well as jars of the sweet syrup for sale. Hahira Honey Bee Festival Scheduled for Sept. 29-Oct. 4, the 27th annual Hahira Honey Bee Festival will kick off festivities with a breakfast on Monday morning, a Senior walk on Tuesday, a Senior Luncheon on Wednesday, and the Honey Bee Pageant on Wednesday and Thursday. A Marbelous Time in Pickens County! The Georgia Marble Festival will be held October 4-5 in Jasper. The festival will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. with a road race through downtown. Georgia Apple Festival The 37th annual Georgia Apple Festival will be held two weekends, on Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 11-12 and Oct. 18-19, at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds on Old Hwy. 5, south of Ellijay. There will be over 300 vendors selling handmade, hand-crafted items, as well as many on-site demonstrations of crafts. This year promises many new crafts as well as favorites from past festivals, live entertainment, great food, an antique car show on Saturday, October 11, and a parade on Saturday, October 18 at 10 a.m. The festival, which celebrates Ellijay’s main agricultural product, the apple, will be held Saturdays from 9-6 and Sundays from 9-5. Kaolin Festival in Sandersville Washington County is the Kaolin Capitol of the World; and kaolin, a white clay, is used in many products including pottery and china, paints and plastics, cosmetics, medicines, makeup, and paper products. The 20th annual Oliver Hardy Festival will be held in Harlem on Saturday, October 4. Social Circle’s Friendship Festival Social Circle will be holding its annual Friendship Festival on Saturday, October 4. These family oriented festivities will begin at 9 a.m. There will be a parade at 10 a.m. with family floats, bands, cars, and antique cars. It will wind through the downtown historic district which will be filled with craft vendors, children’s amusements, food, and live entertainment. Dally Square will be transformed into a carnival atmosphere with games, moonwalks, and other amusements. Mark the Magic Man and his Roaming Theatre will be doing magic tricks and balloon tricks throughout the festival. A Backyard BBQ Cookoff will have teams competing in different categories. Honorees of the local Guiding Lights program, people who have had downtown lights dedicated to them, will be riding in the parade and honored at a ceremony later in the day. World’s Largest Family Picnic in Augusta Augusta hopes to soon be world-famous for something other than golf! In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the YMCA in Augusta, the Georgia Bank and Trust and The Family YMCA will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Largest Family Picnic” on October 12 at First Tee of Augusta. Participants will enjoy a concert by Augusta-native Amy Grant, entertainment by local talent, and a Kid’s Fun Zone. In order to break the current record, more than 8,000 must eat together at 5:15 p.m. Picnics may be brought from home or purchased on site. Picnics must include two food items and a drink; glass containers and alcohol will be prohibited. Arts in the Heart of Augusta The Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival on September 19-21 will showcase the visual and performing arts and celebrate the ethnic groups who blend to create the heart of the city. Bear Creek Festival in Hampton The 11th Annual Bear Creek Festival will be held September 27-28 in Hampton’s oak-shaded City Park with about 100 vendors, continuous live entertainment, children’s games, a parade at 9 a.m., and a short opening ceremony at 11 a.m. There will be an antique car show all day Saturday. Visitors can enjoy shopping among a wide variety of items such as antiques, candles, jewelry, quilts, crafts, woodwork, and more. An abundance of food will include BBQ, fried pies, funnel cakes, and onions; and even Bruster’s and Chic-fil-A will have booths there. For children there will be pony rides, train rides, a moonwalk and other inflatables, games, face painting, a petting zoo, and more. Seven Springs Arts Festival in Powder Springs The City of Powder Springs will present its inaugural Seven Springs Arts Festival on Saturday, October 18, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the historic downtown area. Live entertainment of blue grass, step teams, jazz ensemble, and orchestra will be provided throughout the day. Children will enjoy art projects by trained educators, face painting, hay rides, and a pumpkin carving contest. All ages will enjoy the rich history of Powder Springs offered by the Seven Springs Museum; there will be a walking tour, a civil war storyteller, a chair caner, and a quilter. The festival will feature a variety of original art and delicious foods. Among the artists will be Ann Cockerill whose plein art paintings can be viewed at the Powder Springs Florist in Powder Springs and the Red Cockerill Gallery in Austell. Applications are still being accepted for this juried art festival. Artists will be selected for the categories of painting (oils and water colors); photography; graphics; and 3D (sculpture, pottery, jewelry). Judges will review each category for potential 1st and 2nd place awards as well as Best of Show. Barnesville Buggy Days The 35th annual Barnesville Buggy Days on September 20-21 will celebrate Barnesville’s heritage as the Buggy Capital of the South during the late 1800’s. A parade on Saturday at 2 p.m. will feature buggies, floats, and more than 250 horses. Buggies will also be on display outdoors and in the Old Jail Museum. The Buggython Road Events at 8 a.m. will include a 10K race and a 1K run/walk. The festival will have a juried Arts and Crafts Show with more than 150 vendors selling jewelry, glass, furniture, pottery, and more. There will be a Craftsmen’s Village with craftsmen demonstrating their skills. Entertainment will include old-fashioned games, a car show, and the Miss Buggy Days Contest for all ages of beautiful Southern belles from birth to 21 years. There will be fireworks, tasty foods, music, square dancers, and cloggers. The Buggy Blast Fun Park will be an adventure full of fun activities.
