“Nuthin’ But A Will” Tells Stories of Firemen Colquitt, Georgia is a town known for its stories. After all, it is home to Swamp Gravy, the Official Folk Life Play of Georgia. Now, Colquitt has extended its storytelling past the walls of Cotton Hall Theater onto the sides of their buildings. The 11th mural, Nuthin’ But A Will, is located across from Cotton Hall on the wall of the Colquitt-Miller County Volunteer Fire Department. This mural presents stories that were told by the firemen and were featured in the 2005-2006 Swamp Gravy production by the same name. The mural has four parts: three oval scenes in color, and a black and white background depicting daily life at the fire department. The first oval shows the volunteer firemen signing a personal note to borrow money to purchase a Jaws of Life; this decision was made one cold, rainy night after a victim died because they could not free him. The middle oval depicts firemen rescuing a woman and her son after a devastating tornado in Miller County when they see a Bible opened to Psalms 28:7. The last oval shows the Bike Brigade, a group of young African-American men who wanted to join the fire department and always beat the fire trucks to calls, even on their bikes. Giving them a chance transformed the fire department. For more information visit www.colquittmurals.com.
