ANTIQUES, MUSEUMS, AND ART Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins The Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins can “transport” you to exotic places, take you back in time, or put you in the seat of a jet fighter mission. A virtual reality 6D motion-based “Transporter” simulator will take you on a fast-paced “hold-on-to-yourseat” five-minute ride. The seven-seat capsule ride features twelve different ride experiences including a “Desert Storm” fighter plane mission from the deck of an aircraft carrier; a World War II battle in a Seahawk prop plane over the Island of Iwo Jima; a stunt pilot “barnstormer” ride during the 1920’s; and a time machine ride back in time to dinosaurs, Christopher Columbus’ ships, and man’s first steps on the moon. The “Volcano Mine” ride goes through an incredible ore mine built on a planet of bubbling lava and volcanic magma. Cost for a Transporter ride is $5 or $4 for students attending a Museum education program. The Transporter is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The Museum of Aviation is open daily, however, from 9-5 with free admission. Take I-75 Exit 144; go West 10 miles to Russell Pky. For more information call 478-926-6870 or visit www.museumofaviation.org.
Fitzgerald and the Blue & Gray Museum Located in a historical railroad depot, the museum tells through a documentary and more than 1200 artifacts the remarkable story of Fitzgerald and its Civil War roots. Tour Fitzgerald where history is revealed on every corner with blue and gray sidewalks reflecting Civil War colors, the Grand Plaza Park with planned topiary sculptures, streets named for Yank and Reb Generals, and the Evergreen Cemetery where Yanks and Rebs rest side by side. Visit the Fire Engine Museum; tour historic homes and buildings; and view a variety of architectural styles representing the settlers who came here from 38 at at the the states. GUIDE TO GEORGIA / www.guidetogeorgia.com / May 2008
Peach Blossom Trail For 16 weeks during the heat of the Georgia summer, locally grown Georgia peaches are available fresh off the tree and direct to the consumer. The first Georgia peaches were grown on St. Simons Island in the mid-1700’s. The most popular varieties, variations of the Elberta Peach, were introduced in the late 1800’s. Today over 40 varieties of peaches are commercially grown in the Peach State. In a good season 150 million pounds of peaches can be produced in Georgia with an economic impact of over $50 million dollars. Producing almost 85% of the peaches grown in Georgia are the counties along Georgia’s Peach Blossom Trail: Clayton, Henry, Spalding, Lamar, Monroe, Crawford, Peach, and Houston Counties. The Trail, measuring just over 100 miles, stretches from Clayton County, just south of Atlanta, to Houston County in middle Georgia. It runs parallel to I-75 along US 41 and U S 341 and offers an alternative to the traffic of I-75. From May until August, the fresh Georgia Peach is available at local packing facilities, from roadside stands, and from local food markets. Three packing sheds in Crawford and Peach Counties offer the chance to see peaches graded, sized, and packed for consumption. Fresh fruit is available along with a variety of peachy products and freshly churned peach ice cream. For information visit www.peachblossomtrail.com.
