Scheduled again for June, July, and August will be the Cool History programs which utilize the museum’s interior interpretive spaces to bring actual events from the war to life with the use of staff and volunteers. Blue Ridge Scenic Railway This 26-mile round trip from Blue Ridge to McCaysville offers spectacular views of scenic valleys, forests, rolling hills, and the beautiful Toccoa River. This four hour round trip over tracks that were built over 100 years ago takes three to four hours. Each stop includes a trip to McCaysville. The train is diesel-powered and includes climate-controlled vintage coach cars, an open-air car, and a commissary car with snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. National Science Center’s Fort Discovery in Augusta National Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure will be on exhibit through June 26 at the National Science Center’s Fort Discovery in Augusta. S.E. Railway Museum in Duluth “Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has over 90 pieces of retired railway rolling stock: trains from the 1920’s and 1950’s including vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and private cars, WWII troop kitchen, railway post office car, wooden freight cars, baggage cars, cabooses, and maintenance of way equipment. The museum is home to MARTA’s historic bus fleet which includes busses from many of the predecessor systems to MARTA. Train rides aboard restored cabooses are normally available for $1 per person. The railway museum is open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10-5 from April-December. Battle of Resaca Reenactment in Gordon County Smell the powder, see the smoke, and hear the thunder of battle at the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Resaca on May 16-17. Relive the first major Battle of the Atlanta Campaign, a reenactment held on 600 acres of the original 1864 battlefield. A reenactment battle will take place Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. This event marks the 25th Annual Civil War Reenactment at Resaca. Dairy Festival in Eatonton The 50th Annual Putnam County Dairy Festival will be held in Eatonton on Saturday, June 6. Activities will begin at 8 a.m. with the 31st annual 10K Torture Trail Road Race & One Mile Fun Run. (706-485-9941). Georgia Peach Festival in Fort Valley & Byron The 23rd annual Georgia Peach Festival will be held June 12-14 in Byron with events in Fort Valley on June 15-17 and June 20. Events in Byron will begin Friday, June 12, at noon with a Historical Society Luncheon at the Byron UMC and a Peach Community Choir Performance at Byron Baptist Church at 7 p.m. The festival on Saturday will include rides, games, food, a free concert at 8 p.m., and fireworks. Sunday will feature a performance by the Peach Community Choir at the Municipal Complex at 2:30 p.m. The festival will move to Fort Valley with a performance by the Peach Community Choir at Austin Theatre on Monday at 7 p.m., a Painting of the Peaches downtown on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and Khoury’s Walk for Health on Wednesday at 7 a.m. in the Historic District. Saturday, June 20, will be packed with activities! There will be arts and crafts, music, food, kiddie rides, water slides, inflatable play, free tour of Lane Packing, and a free shuttle.
