Garden and Nature Events Festival of Camellias at Massee Lane in Fort Valley Camellias, the roses of winter, bloom throughout the coolest months during Camellia Days from November until March or April at Massee Lane Gardens, located 5.5 miles south of Fort Valley on GA 49. Easy walking tours wind through ten acres of formal camellia gardens with camellia trees flowering alongside the brick walks. A landscaped greenhouse with camellias and azaleas assures blooms even during the coolest weather. Two galleries showcase exquisite displays of porcelain art. The Festival of Camellias runs every day in February when camellia blooms are at their peak. The first Saturday of February offers free admission. Other events throughout the month will include a Camellia workshop, Camellia culture demonstrations, and entertainment. Camellias and Sasanquas will be for sale. The gardens are open daily and are handicap-accessible with wheelchairs available in the gift shop. Visit www.americancamellias.org or call 478-967-2358 or 877-422-6355.

Holidays in Georgia National Civil War Naval Mustum at Port Columbus A Victorian Christmas will be held two weekends this year at the Port Columbus Civil War Naval Museum which will be decorated in traditional Victorian holiday style with circa 1863 decorations and trees. The first weekend, Nov. 26-27, will feature a museum theatre program telling the stories of sailors during the holidays, period music, and snacks provided by Fountain City Coffee. Regular admission will apply. The second weekend, Dec. 3-4, will be the traditional open house. A Civil War Era Santa will listen to children’s want lists. Photos with Santa will be available. There will also be Victorianera entertainment and music as well as snacks provided by Twelfth Street Deli. At the conclusion of the day, Santa will fire the original Civil War cannon from the CSS Jackson. This event will be free to the public. “Santa, as we know him, first appeared at an army camp to pass out presents to soldiers,” said executive director Bruce Smith. Prominent political cartoonist Thomas Nash’s 1863 image depicted a jolly, plump, bearded man delivering gifts to Union troops at their encampment, wearing a fur-trimmed suit of patriotic stars and stripes. Enjoy unique shopping in the museum store and explore naval operations for the North and South through displays of uniforms, artillery, firearms, personal effects, flags, murals, a timeline exhibit, ships and ship replicas, and a battle simulator theater. Open daily 9am-5pm. See coupon in ad on page 3. 1002 Victory Drive, Columbus. 706-327-9798. www.portcolumbus.org.

V An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2: 9-14
