METRO ATLANTA CALENDAR The Atlanta Camping & RV Show The Atlanta Camping & RV Show will be a three-day, no-frill sales event featuring the biggest savings in its 34 year history. The show will be held September 17-19 at the Atlanta Expo Center South (exit 55 off I-285). This supermarket of campers will feature Class A motor homes, 5th wheels, travel trailers, Class C minimotor homes, van campers, folding camping trailers, and toy haulers, all with special low show prices. Dealers from across the region will be under the same roof, and shoppers can find instant financing and insurance representatives all on the same floor. There will be booths providing information on camping, campgrounds, vacation destinations, RV organizations, RV equipment and accessories, storage, and maintenance. There will be cooking demonstrations and prizes. Show hours will be Friday 11-7, Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 11-5. Admission will be $10/adults; $9 for 55 and over; $5 for 6-16; and free under 6. September Is Su 2010 Sandy Springs Festival The 25th Anniversary Sandy Springs Festivall will take place September 25-26. Features of the Festival will include the Doug Kessler Lightning 5K/10K race, a juried Artist’s Market, Business and Civic Expo, a Children’s Park, Collector’s Car Show, Kiwanis Pet Parade, Heritage Crafters, live entertainment, food court, Whole Foods Heritage Homegrown Market, Saint Joseph’s Hospital Health & Wellness Area, and more. Blue Ridge Scenic Railway This 26-mile round trip from Blue Ridge to McCaysville offers spectacular views of scenic valleys, forests, rolling hills, and the beautiful Toccoa River. Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth The Southeastern Railway Museum features over 90 pieces of retired railroad equipment in its 35-acre site in Duluth. Plains Peanut Festival The Plains Peanut Festival on September 25 will honor the peanut industry, the peanut farmer, and Plains’ native son, Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the U.S. Admission and parking will be free. Sorghum Festival in Blairsville The 41st annual Sorghum Festival will be held in Blairsville at Meeks Park for two great weekends on October 9-10 and October 16-17 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Celebrating the lost art of sorghum syrup-making, the festival will have live demonstrations showing how the cane is crushed and cooked as well as jars of the sweet syrup for sale. There will be arts and crafts, food, and live music. On Saturdays and Sundays there will be contests such as Biskit Eatin’, Pole Climbin’, Syrup Soppin’, Rock Throwin’, Horseshoe Throwin’, Baccur Spittin’, and Log Sawin’. There will be prizes given to the oldest visitor and the visitor who traveled the farthest. Oliver Hardy Festival in Harlem The 22nd annual Oliver Hardy Festival will be held in Harlem on Saturday, October 2. Festivities on Main Street will begin with a children’s parade at 9 a.m., an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m., and a parade at 10 a.m. A BBQ Dinner will be served all day. Perspectives Georgia Pottery Invitational in Watkinsville The 8th annual Perspectives 2010: Georgia Pottery Invitational from August 28-Sept. 15 will showcase the work of 50 potters from all corners of the state and will exemplify the finest ceramicists in Georgia. Featuring over 5000 pieces of pottery for sale, an Opening Reception Gala, a Preview Sale, educational exhibitions, gallery talks, workshops, free weekend pottery demonstrations, and studio tours, the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation is sponsoring this three-week pottery event at the OCAF Art Center in Watkinsville. Georgia Marble Festival in Jasper The 30th Annual Georgia Marble Festival will be held the first full weekend in October in Jasper. The festival will kick-off Saturday, October 2, at 10 a.m. with a parade on Main Street. The festival theme, “Marble Mania–the Craziest, Zaniest things You Can Do With Marble,” will be featured in the parade. The festival will be held at Lee Newton Park Saturday, October 2, from 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, October 3, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. There will be juried arts and crafts, fine arts, children’s area, entertainment, and a variety of foods. Parking and shuttles will be free. Festival admission will be $5/adults and $3/students age 6 and up. On Saturday, one of the shuttle pick-ups will be at Lawson Chevrolet, site of the Georgia Marble Festival Classic Car Show. 20th Anniversary Art in the Park Festival at Hurricane Shoals Park The Tumbling Waters Society of Jackson County will host the 20th Anniversary Art in the Park Festival at the historic Hurricane Shoals Park on Sept. 18-19. The Park is off GA 82 Spur between Jefferson & Maysville. Hours will be Saturday from 10-6 and Sunday from 12:30-5:30. Admission and parking will be free. Learn the history of the Shoals, putt by putt, on the Spirit of the River Miniature Golf Course. Marvel at the carved Indians and bears and replicas of the chapel and cabins; even play through the waterfall. History Runs Deep in Bainbridge Bainbridge’s history runs deep both in the beautiful Flint River and on dry land. The waterways surrounding Decatur County were instrumental in the initial growth and development of the region. Bainbridge was Georgia’s first inland port, and in its early days was a proud river town with two steamship companies moving cotton and other goods along the Flint River to areas upstream and to the Gulf of Mexico. Resident John W. Callahan (1858-1926) owned and operated the largest individual naval store in the world. Callahan’s home, modeled after one of his steamboats, is part of Bainbridge’s Heritage Tour. This self-guided tour includes over 50 historic homes, churches, and other buildings, many now restored to their original stately glory. If the weather’s nice, start in Willis Park, the center of downtown, and try walking through the tour. Oak City Cemetery is one of the city’s most beautiful sights. The west section of the cemetery was deeded to Temple Beth-El in 1878, making it one of the first Jewish cemeteries in Georgia. Also buried there are Marvin S. Griffin, the 72nd Governor of Georgia; numerous Confederate soldiers; and Mariam Hopkins, a famous Broadway, movie, and television star in the 1920s-1950s. It is said that she was Margaret Mitchell’s first choice to play Scarlett O'Hara in the film version of Gone With the Wind. Barnesville Buggy Days The 37th annual Barnesville Buggy Days on September 18-19 will celebrate Barnesville’s heritage as the Buggy Capital of the South during the late 1800’s. A street dance will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ritz Park Amphitheater with performances by Madelyn Patterson and Triple Threat with Master Blasters headlining the event. Georgia Apple Festival The 39th annual Georgia Apple Festival will be held two weekends, on Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 9-10 and Oct. 16-17, at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds on Old Hwy. 5, south of Ellijay. Carrollton Fine Arts & Crafts MeccaFest The Carrollton Artist Guild will present The Carrollton Fine Arts and Crafts MeccaFest on October 9-10 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Cultural Art Center at 251 Alabama Street. Fall Festival in Watkinsville Enjoy a cool, crisp fall day in Historic Downtown Watkinsville, “The Artland of Georgia,” where the Oconee Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring the 37th Annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 16. Kaolin Festival in Sandersville A tradition started in 1957, the Kaolin Festival attracts 3000-5000 people who enjoy a parade filled with local pageant queens, marching bands, civic organizations, and elaborate industry floats each year. The downtown square is filled with vendors selling arts & crafts and food with live music starting mid-day. A juried art section will be added this year. The weeklong festivities kick off on Saturday, October 2, with the Kaolin Century Bike Ride.There will be four routes: 25K (18mi), 50K (32mi), 100k (62mi), and a Century, which is 108 miles. The scenic routes are within the rolling hills of Washington County and will pass through beautiful Kaolin mining areas and scenic farmland. There are routes for riders at all levels. Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival The Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival on September 17-19, now in its 30th year, will feature visual, performing, and literary arts, while showcasing Augusta’s diverse ethnic and cultural heritage. Brazil is the featured country for 2010. Brazil has expanded their culinary display and will be bringing in the Brazilian Dance Group Capoeira Cordao de Ouro and Brazilian photographer D.K. Bhaskar. Capoeira is a martial arts/dance form that originated from African slaves brought to Brazil during the Colonial period. The festival will feature a global food village, with cuisine from over 35 different countries, a fine arts and crafts market with over 100 artist’s booths, and four stages with over 80 performances.
