From the Publisher—
Why do you ride?
That’s a question I’ve been asking people since 2007, when I first rediscovered the bicycle. Back then, my best cycling resource was the Meet-Up website, which connected me with the perfect group to support my newfound cycling passion. At my first meet-up, I met men and women at diverse levels of fitness, riding an assortment of bikes, who had gotten into cycling for different reasons. Some had physical challenges to overcome. Some wanted to contribute to fundraising efforts by participating in charity rides. Some were looking for social interaction that matched their lifestyle. Some saw bicycling as the ideal form of transportation. And some approached endurance and competitive cycling as their own personal Mt. Everest. And me? I like physical activity and I love the outdoors. So, from the beginning, cycling hit the mark for me. Initially, I enjoyed slow, 10–12 mph neighborhood rides, where we talked about “everything cycling.” The rides became faster, and each time I leveled up, I made new friendships—and learned more about the reasons people ride. In this issue, we’ll introduce you to Uli Shackmann, who rides for AIDS research; Jon Gudmundsson, who is currently riding to break a world record; and some who ride in the Dolphin Challenge to raise funding for cancer research. Eleven years later, my expanded cycling community is still finding reasons to ride. Some enjoy neighborhood rides; some support their communities; while some are achieving performance levels they never dreamed of. How about you? Why do you ride? Drop us a line and let us know. Pedals UP! —Michael Gale Cycling Quarterly South Florida
Alaska to Key West, Unsupported One Woman's Journey to Help Others The Question: How far are you willing to pedal for an important cause? For Fort Lauderdale resident Uli Shackmann, the answer is: more than 6,500 miles. In May 2017, 58-year-old Uli began her self-supported journey from Anchorage, Alaska, to Key West, Florida. If that doesn’t sound daunting enough, consider that Uli packed her bike with cold-weather clothes, a tent, sleeping bag, food, water, a five-foot AIDS memorial flag, a bear drum and a bike trailer to tow her 20-pound dog, Jackson. She estimates the entire rig, rider included, topped 250 pounds.

Some Background: For 20 years, Uli has been participating in The Smart Ride, an annual South Florida event that raises money for the care and treatment of South Florida AIDS patients. Although she hasn’t lost anyone close to her to this disease, Uli is painfully aware of how many lives it continues to affect. A slightly-built woman with a big heart, big dreams and the ability to suspend fear when it doesn’t serve her plans, Uli, aboard her heavy steel bike, towing her huge AIDs memorial flag is a familiar figure on The Smart Ride. There, and wherever else she goes, her zest for life and her genuine caring capture the Uli and Jackson, just outside of Anchorage imagination of everyone she meets. at the beginning of their journey. After Uli completed The Smart Ride in 2016, ride founder, Glen Weinzimer, noting it was her 20th Smart Ride, asked what she was doing next year. Although he expected her to say, “The Smart Ride for AIDS,” she surprised him, the crowd and herself by announcing she would be riding from Anchorage to Key West!
Planning: Uli impulsively committed to the journey, knowing that she wanted to raise money to help find a cure for AIDS by 2020 through The Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR). But when she started making plans, she was overwhelmed by the amount of advice she got: She was warned of the dangers of wildlife and cautioned about meeting strangers in desolate areas; she was offered advice on routes to take and routes to avoid, what to bring and what not to – which all added up to a whole host of well-meaning input. There certainly was a lot to consider and much to be concerned about. At some point, though, Uli decided she couldn’t live in fear and couldn’t plan for every eventuality, so she’d leave her trip in the hands of fate. In Uli’s words: “I’d surrender to whatever happens.” With a loose, flexible plan in mind, she shipped her bike, camping gear, AIDS flag and Jackson’s trailer to a friend in Anchorage, then flew up – where she was met with hip-deep snow and a comfortable bed to use while she put her bike together.
Photo: Uli Shackmann
The Journey: “Surrendering to whatever happens” took the stress out of planning a route and worrying about every detail. Uli got to enjoy the snowfall and soak in the smell and sight of an Alaskan spring and the lilacs it brought forth. She experienced the tension of approaching chinooks and hurricanes and the fear of unexpectedly happening upon a grizzly bear with her cubs, a lone panther out on a hunt and even rattlesnakes. Along the way, Uli and Jackson befriended dogsled racers and individuals who have dedicated their lives to helping children. They met local celebrities, known only within a 50-mile radius of their small towns. And in many

“I’d surrender to what happens,” Uli said before her trip began, and that flexibility made her trip possible. That, and Uli’s sunny personality. of those towns, Uli and Jackson also became celebrities and were treated as honored guests. While climbing several thousand feet on her first day out, Uli got familiar with the feeling of wanting to give up. She even experienced thoughts of ditching her bike a few weeks later, convinced it would be easier to walk. And then she experienced, up close and personal, the fear and anxiety of riding through West Virginia as the riots in Charlottesville were igniting some of the ugliest events in recent history. The People They Met: With the exception of the few-hundred-mile stretch near the Charlottesville uprising, Uli found everyone she encountered – from Southwestern Canada to Minnesota, from Michigan and Wisconsin across to Virginia and Georgia and even in her hurricane detour through Alabama – to be willing to open their homes and hearts to her and Jackson. People with barely any means generously contributed to the amFAR cause. All of this added up to six months-worth of incredible stories, through which shine the helpfulness and acceptance of strangers. It wasn’t a given, though, that she’d be met with the welcoming kindness she was so happy to have found throughout Canada and the U.S. Uli is a German immigrant with an obvious accent – and she was riding to raise money for a cure for AIDS. She also has an intellectual air about her, and her journey took her through places that don’t see many out-of-town visitors. To top it off, she was a woman in her late 50s, riding solo (except for Jackson) and camping out most nights. Suffice it to say, she frequently did not blend in. Cycling Quarterly South Florida

Success! More than 6,500 miles later, Uli and Jackson are still smiling. However, while pedaling over 6,000 miles, she found souls that welcomed her in and went above and beyond for this stranger and her dog. From those who were poor to those who were very poor; from the ultra-religious to the almost famous; from those with big families to single men to gay women, so many of the people Uli met were compelled to help this cyclist on a mission. Reaching Her Goal: Uli arrived in the Florida Keys just after Hurricane Irma. She decided it would be wise to wait to finish her journey, as Key West was full of traffic due to their popular Halloween Fantasy Fest. But then she got a phone call from AIDS Help of Key West: “Uli, if you are in town can you please be part of our parade?” How could she say “no” to what may be the most fitting finish to a 6,586mile trip to fund the cure for AIDS? And so, Uli Shackmann and Jackson celebrated their arrival, in style, honored in the 2017 Fantasy Fest Parade. Training Wheels For the Entry-Level Rider Bicycle Safety for Newbies When first riding my bike on the road, I vacillated between sheer joy and sheer terror. The wind in my face was invigorating and the power in my legs liberating, but the whoosh of cars speeding by so closely was terrifying. While there is a law stating that all motor vehicles must maintain a threefoot distance from cyclists in the bike lane, few drivers know the rule, putting cyclists at serious risk of injury. While working on your cycling skills, consider the following bits of advice from a seasoned “newbie,” who learned from both personal experience and the wisdom of fellow riders how to ride safely in South Florida. First, know your route. Before you hit the road, check out your planned path of travel and make sure you will have secured bike lanes all the way. Happily, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Dade Counties publish Bike Suitability Maps. Located on the map in the center of our own Cycling Quarterly are QR codes that put scores of established bike routes in your phone for easy access. You can even find bike paths with NO automobile traffic! In Miami Dade, The Underline, located under the Metro mover, is dedicated to cyclists and walkers. The Palm Beach Trail is also auto-traffic free. Do speak up if you are approaching a walker from behind, so we all stay safe. According to American Family Physician, most cycling-related fatalities and long-term disabilities result from head injuries sustained during accidents, so always wear a helmet! In groups, ride behind experienced riders, who will alert you to obstacles, while leading you on a steady, even ride. Also, ride within your ability. I learned first hand that if you overexert yourself the whole ride you’ll become fatigued, making mistakes that may cause an accident. Know thy bike. Spend time somewhere safe (like an empty parking lot), where you can practice turning, clipping in and out, stopping quickly, handling your water bottle and generally feeling confident on your bike. When the unexpected happens, you’ll be prepared. Stay in your comfort zone until you feel confident enough to try out a new route, a new group ride or a new bike. Go slow and steady, like our good friend the tortoise. He was no dummy. Even though he wore his helmet on his back! —Mariah Reed Mariah Reed teaches theater classes at Broward College and enjoys riding her bike whenever possible. In her free time, she also writes plays, poetry and the occasional article for periodicals.

omething momentous is quietly happening in the South Florida cycling community! In the sleepy little neighborhoods of Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay, south of Miami, Jon Eggert Gudmundsson is putting in miles and miles of running, cycling and swimming to break the world record for longest triathlon. His plan is to run 810 miles, cycle 3,400 miles and swim 120 miles. According to Guinness Book of World Records rules, there is no time limit on when he must finish, but he must record some activity every single day, and all of his activity must be documented and verified. To do so, Jon wears a GoPro camera on his head to film his route every day and finishes every run and bike ride at Andante Bike Shop in Cutler Bay, where owner Mauricio Orozco signs off on an official document. Jon’s runs and bike rides are also tracked on Strava, and his swims are tracked on Garmin Connect. In addition, Jon must also blog or write a diary entry about his activities every day. He posts pictures on Facebook, hashtagged #WheelHeroes, in support of a local organization that supplies adaptive bicycles to special-needs children. When he’s done, Jon will have ten terabytes of data about his activities! Jon started running on February 9th, with a plan to complete 15 miles daily. The current Jon Eggert Gudmundsson record for consecutive

half-marathons is 57, so he has applied to Guinness to attempt to break that, as well. He will start cycling in mid-April, aiming for 100 miles a day. He expects to start his swimming segment in July, completing 200 laps daily in the local LA Fitness pool and finishing sometime in August. He is also considering adding another running block while swimming so that he can break the current record for the longest duathlon. Running in July and August? Ouch! After both walking (2006) and cycling (2016) the entire perimeter of his native Iceland, Jon was motivated to start his current quest when he was unable to complete a swim around Iceland last summer because it was so difficult to mobilize the necessary support. Keeping things local has simplified his planning, though he is still looking for a surveyor to certify his running and cycling routes. “I like to do things no one has done before,” Jon says with a smile. You can follow his progress at https://cyclingviking.blog.is —Karrie Norberg Karrie Norberg is an emergency department nurse in busy, busy Miami. The Fakawi’s network of levees, horse trails and old, abandoned farm roads creates a unique cycling experience and a sneak peek into old Florida. The ride begins at Markham Park, with police escort, a mass start and a controlled, 15-mph pace that lasts approximately five miles. There are three route options: a 50-mile long loop, a 30-mile short loop and a 12-mile out-and-back on the levee. The Fakawi is a self-supported ride. There are water stations along the way, offering mechanical assistance, snacks and drinks, but do NOT depend on them. The ride concludes back at Markham Park’s corporate pavilion, with food, beverages and music. May 20, 2018, 8 a.m., Markham Park, 16001 W. State Road 84, Sunrise FL 33326. Fee: $20
Survivors line up at the gate for last year’s Tour de Pink South. See Tracks? Think Fast Train!
Photo: Judy Borich
More and Faster Trains: That’s what the sign says, and it refers to the addition of the Briteline trains. These trains currently provide 10 weekday round trips from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach and nine round trips on the weekends. Eventually, the Brightline will also connect Miami to Orlando. These trains go much faster than the ones we are used to, so pay attention to the warnings. As part of their commitment to safety, Brightline has teamed up with Florida Operation Lifesaver to promote railway awareness. Through the Partners in Safety program, Brightline encourages pedestrians, motorists and cyclists to make safe choices when approaching trains and crossings: See Tracks? Think Train! Cycling Quarterly also wants cyclists to be particularly smart and safe when it comes to tracks and trains. Commit to stopping at all rail warning signs and abiding by the law that declares it illegal to go around the railroad guard gates. It only adds seconds (at the most, minutes) to your ride, and the alternative is not acceptable. So, take Brightline’s campaign advice and Look, Listen and Live!

HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY Our Weekly Rides listings are one of the main reasons I started this magazine. “Where’s a good ride?” is a question I often hear, so I’ve provided a resource to answer it. Please let us know about rides we may have missed. These established rides are open to new riders. Listed times can be the actual departure time, so always arrive early, introduce yourself and ask questions. Rating skill levels can be challenging, so it’s best to expect the level to be faster than cited. Always wear a helmet and obey the rules of the road. Attaching a rear blinking light is a good idea, and a headlight at night is the law. Ride details include: DAY: Weekly Ride calendar starts on a Saturday and ends on Friday. TIME: The time the ride starts is the first item in the listing. SKILL LEVEL: Color-coded arrows indicate the maximum speed or average speed. DROP/NO DROP: If you have a mechanical issue or can’t keep up during a drop ride, you’re on your own. During a no-drop ride, the group will not leave you behind. CONTACT INFO: If contact info is not available, take a shot and show up. There’s a good chance there will be riders unless weather interferes. MAP LOCATOR: Geographic position of the ride on our foldout map.

FANCY CYCLING OK. First, let’s just get this out in the open right away: I don’t do tricks on my bikes. Second, I really wish I did. Now, thanks to this book, Fancy Cycling, by Isabel Marks, I see that many people do fantastic tricks on their bikes. And, since this book was originally published in 1901, I know they’ve been doing fabulous stunts for more than 117 years. I was in Minnesota visiting my sister last summer when I saw this book. I had to buy it. Now, if you don’t feel any need to impress your neighors, friends, relatives and fellow cyclists with stunts proven over the last century, I understand. But if you do feel the need to perform “the many graceful, daring, altogether fascinating feats,” go to oldhousebooks.co.uk or amazon. com and get this book. I did. —Bruce Borich

Spotlight on Dolphins Cancer Challenge
T
Riding For A Cause alk about a double feel-good experience! The Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC), the NFL’s single largest fundraiser, provides an opportunity to have a great bike ride and raise funds to fight cancer.
Saturday, February 10th, marked the eighth annual DCC – and Cycling Quarterly was there to greet enthusiastic cyclists who’d decided to participate in the 14-mile bike ride to fight cancer. Altogether, the Challenge includes five bike routes of different lengths throughout South Florida, as well as a 5K run/walk and celebration concert. We like the fact that the NFL encourages inclusivity by offering these various levels of rides, runs and even walking activities. And 100% of donations raised by participants at all levels fund innovative research and targeted therapies at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. From the get-go, there was lots of passion evident at the 14-mile challenge. Vicki Chase and Chrissy Spohn were riding for brother-inlaw John Chase, who is a cancer survivor. John’s wife, Tamara, told us that this is the third time she and her friends and family participated in the challenge. Three years ago, her team consisted of seven riders. Last year twenty-eight cyclists joined them. This year, sixty-seven cancer fighters took part. Their team has gained the support of the Roofing Association and suppliers, who sponsored the group and pitched in to outfit them with jerseys sporting their team name, Cancer Fighting Contractors. As Tamara noted, “There is Vicki Chase and Chrissy Spohn were riding for a great vibe here. It’s very brother-in-law John Chase, who is a cancer cool. You can help make survivor.

a difference for so many people who are affected: those fighting cancer today, survivors, friends and family members.” Survivor Aram Kulhanjian sported a colorful Living Proof arm sleeve. He and girlfriend, Arevik Ress, were riding for himself and his father, who passed away from Survivor Aram Kulhanjian and girlfriend, Arevik lung cancer when Aram Ress, cross the finish line. They were riding for Aram and for his father, who passed away from was only 15. “I’m a survivor lung cancer when Aram was only 15. of melanoma. It’s a risk in South Florida. I’m a regular cyclist but do other sports as well, and I always wear long sleeves to protect myself,” said Aram. Several Dolphin alumni were spotted at the event, including Shawn Wooden, who played on the team from 1996 to 2004 (Number 22). Shawn began participating in the DCC during its inaugural ride, eight years ago. An enthusiastic supporter, he explained that, for him, this fight is personal. “Mom survived breast cancer, and several teammates from high school, college and the pros have been affected by cancer.” As Shawn aptly noted, Several Dolphin alumni were spotted at the “It’s one disease that touches event, including Shawn Wooden, who played on everybody.”
Daniel Cohen, 14 years old, poses with his mom before the ride. Daniel raised $300 on his own to participate in the ride in honor of his great uncle.
If these participants haven’t convinced you that anyone can make a difference, check out 14-year-old I asked him if he had done much training in preparation for the 14-mile ride. Daniel shrugged. “I ride my bike to school every day.” “And how far is that?” I asked. Daniel looked at his mom, questioningly. She chuckled and said, “About a mile.” But Daniel was unfazed, and as the announcer

Everyone’s a winner at the Dolphins Cancer Challenge!
directed all participants to the starting line, the teen brushed me aside in his haste to get going. His mother smiled with pride. These are the kinds of heroes one sees at the Dolphins Cycling Challenge. Regular folks, and the occasional pro football player, who have been touched by cancer and want to join the fight that will eradicate the disease forever. Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President and Dolphins Cancer Challenge Executive Director, Jennifer Jehn, reported that more than 250 cancer survivors took part in this year’s challenge, making it the most well-attended yet. “We are all partners in this fight to find new cures. The impact of this event and everyone’s commitment cannot be overstated,” said Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Director, Stephen D. Nimer, M.D. In case you missed out on this inspiring event and still want to lend a hand (or a dollar) in the fight against cancer, consider participating in the DCC Celebrity Golf Tournament on April 13, 2018. For my part, I’m going to start training now for the Dolphins Cycling Challenge in 2019!

Q&A With Dr. Goodwin
CQ: Dr. Goodwin, are you a bicycle rider? JG: I had seven years riding in the Challenge, W. Jarrard (Jerry) Goodwin, MD and I really loved it. I rode the 170 we had for the two-day events the first four years. Then I rode the 100 with my daughter and my son-in-law, and we just had a blast. But today, I walked.

While cheering on cyclists at the Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC), the NFL’s mega cancer-research fundraiser, in February, Cycling Quarterly also caught up with W. Jarrard (Jerry) Goodwin, MD. Goodwin is the Chief Medical Officer of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which integrates all of the cancer research, education and patient care activities of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. CQ wanted to find out what he thought about the event.
CQ: So, what do you think about the size this event has blown up to? And how many years has it been going on, now? JG: This is the eighth year, and it has just exceeded our greatest expectations. It really brings the community together to fight cancer. CQ: Can you give us any insight as to the breakthroughs as a result of the fundraising that’s been going on here? What have you seen as a result of that? Can you give us some hope? JG: The research is reaching the patients faster than ever before. Probably, the hottest stuff this year is the personalized immunotherapy. We’re really making great strides in helping the patients fight their cancers with their own immune systems. CQ: What would you say to someone who is not currently participating in this event to give them some incentive to come out and do this next year? JG: Get out here and join us! We’ve got our patients with us, our families, our colleagues, our friends, and it’s just a fabulous day fighting cancer. CQ: Thanks for your time, Dr. Goodwin. See you next year! —Michael Gale, Publisher, Cycling Quarterly 32
