From the Publisher—
Remember: Smile and Wave
Memory can be mysterious. Why are the big things in our lives so easily remembered, while the small, everyday occurrences are not so readily recalled? For instance, riding my bike—whether it’s in a large group ride, or with a group of friends or alone on the trails off-road – is a peaceful activity. But most of these pleasant, everyday rides don’t stand out in my memory. What I do remember is the instant buzz kill of an on-road encounter with an angry motorist that results in a near collision – or their yelling a nasty comment, like, “Get off the road!” Unfortunately, these are the motorist vs. cyclist situations that seem to be most memorable. Let me propose this: Consider all those you know that don’t ride bicycles. They are, for the most part good, kind people, aren’t they? (Well, except for that cranky uncle who shows up at Thanksgiving.) So here’s a corollary statement: Most motorists are considerate towards cyclists. (Well, except for the occasional “Get off the road” hater. But they, like that cranky, only-on-Thanksgiving uncle, are not the norm). How many times have you come upon a motorist who stops at a stop sign and gives you that extra beat, waiting patiently until you pass? How about the motorist who offers a friendly gesture and allows you the right of way as you attempt to change lanes? We may forget these small, positive, everyday experiences, while we focus on more stressful on-road events—but let’s retrain our brains. It is risky to mix motorists and bicycles, so let’s do our part – let’s be predictable and follow the rules of the road. And let’s remember those considerate motorists, too, and meet them with a smile and a wave of appreciation. Pedals UP! —Michael Gale Cycling Quarterly South Florida
Counties Step Up for Bicycle Safety
C
ycling Quarterly supports cycling safety – and we want to keep our readers informed about any safe-cycling developments that might affect them. Recently, we reached out to the planning organizations of all three counties in our distribution area to learn about their latest accomplishments, as well as their future plans for increasing cycling safety. They all responded quickly, and we are happy to share their progress. Stay tuned for updates.
Broward
In 2013, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) established the Complete Streets Initiative to promote a more balanced transportation system, one that addresses the needs of all users, including people who walk, bike and take transit. The establishment of the Complete Streets Initiative represents a significant shift in the way the Broward MPO plans and funds new transportation projects in the region. Health, safety and economic development benefits have been directly attributed to roads planned, designed and operated for all – not just automobiles. The main intent of the Initiative is to promote these proven benefits by providing educational opportunities for elected officials, training for technical staff and promoting active (bicycle/pedestrian) transportation in our communities. The Complete Streets Initiative has been able to create the political and community support necessary to influence policy decision at the local levels, allowing for the implementation of active transportation projects. Local governments, such as Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach and Broward County, have modified and updated internal regulations and policies in support of a balanced transportation system. Through the Complete Streets Initiative and a partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation, the Broward MPO has moved into the implementation phase for nearly $300 million dollars in active transportation projects over the next five years. Approximately 140 miles of bicycle facilities and 35 miles of pedestrian facilities will be added to the existing transportation network to better connect Broward’s communities. Our first phase of implementation will be completed this fall (2018); projects include buffered bike lanes on Nob Hill Road and Pine Island Road, seven miles of bicycle facilities along NW 31st Ave and many sidewalk improvements countywide. Miami-Dade Helping People on Bikes Get Across Bridges Safely Because of its natural beauty and the access to neighborhoods and jobs it provides, Miami-Dade County’s waterfront is a key destination for bicyclists. The Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) is working with the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), the Parks Recreation and Open Spaces (PROS) Department, the cities of Miami and Miami Beach and FDOT District Six to enhance bicycle mobility along causeways that cross Biscayne Bay. Green Bike Lanes Green bike lanes have been added to the Venetian Causeway between Miami and Miami Beach and to the Rickenbacker Causeway on Key Biscayne. •

The Rickenbacker Causeway includes green bike lanes within Crandon Park and at conflict points throughout the causeway. The TPO is working with Miami-Dade County PROS and DTPW to prioritize funds to extend the green lanes across Virginia Key and through the toll plaza.

Bikes on Limited Access Causeways Two other major limited access (LA) causeways have been opened to bicyclists. By Florida law, bicyclists are not allowed on LA roads such as expressways, the turnpike and the interstate system. In 2012, FDOT was directed to add bike lanes to three LA causeways as a two-year pilot program. Miami-Dade County captured two projects: the William Lehman Causeway between Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach, and the Julia Tuttle Causeway between Miami and Miami Beach. FDOT made added access improvements, signs and markings and opened the lanes in 2013. Both projects connect major population and recreation areas and feature beautiful views of the skyline and waterfront. Since the bike lanes were opened, bike counts have The Venetian Causeway’s colored lanes are a increased by 50 percent. Removing barriers that partnership between Miami-Dade County and the block access to popular desti- cities of Miami and Miami Beach. nations, like parks, neighborhoods, jobs and transit stations, is an important strategy to help make Miami-Dade a more bike-friendly community. Palm Beach
The Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency (TPA), formerly known as the Palm Beach Metropolitan Planning Agency (MPO), collaboratively plans, prioritizes and funds transportation projects in Palm Beach County. The Palm Beach TPA’s vision is to create a safe, efficient and connected multimodal transportation system in Palm Beach County. The Palm Beach TPA has made Complete Streets a priority and passed a Complete Street Policy, as well as adopted Complete Streets Design Guidelines. Projects that promote pedestrian and bicycle connectivity and safety are ranked higher in the Palm Beach TPA’s Transportation Alternatives and Local Initiatives grant funding programs. A couple of recent examples of Palm Beach TPA-funded projects include adding green bicycle lanes, street trees and complete crosswalk upgrades on 15th St. in the City of West Palm Beach from Australian Ave. to N. Dixie Hwy. Yearly, the Palm Beach TPA, Florida Department of Transportation, Palm Beach County and local municipalities celebrate Florida Bicycle Month in March with a resolution and various bicycle events to encourage bicycling as an alternative form of transportation and to support the funding of infrastructure projects for non-motorized users. Training Wheels For the Entry-Level Rider Let’s Get Techie: Bike Apps So, you’re enjoying your weekly rides as well as the fitness gains you’ve experienced – but you want more. How do you progress without throwing yourself into a hammerhead group that will think nothing of leaving you in the dust? One way is to download a cycling app that will help you monitor your ride stats and even provide coaching suggestions to gradually improve your fitness level. Apps don’t judge—and they can motivate you to push yourself a little more each day, at your own pace. Here are a few to consider.
Mapping
Strava is a fantastic app that will track your distance, speed, time and elevation, as well as your ride history. If you relish competition, you can view the stats of other riders along the same routes. Strava even tells you when you have set a new record, which can be quite motivating. Another fun app is Map My Ride. Very much like Strava, it records your ride stats so you can track your progress. And this app allows you to upload your ride data onto their website for more thorough analysis. Both Strava and Map My Ride are free, so check them out to determine your favorite configuration. Cycle Tracker Pro integrates Google Maps and your music, allowing you to create a cycling play list and access street views to confirm you are on the right route, while the app captures your ride stats. Cycle Tracker Pro also provides GPS-enabled real-time maps and the ability to customize your readout screen so you can monitor specific data instantly.
Mountain Biking
Mountain bikers will appreciate MTB Project, especially when traveling. This app lists the best trails near you, providing information about distances and difficulty ratings. Another nice feature of this app is that it allows you to access ride-enhancing advice about the area from the local mountain biking community.
Training
If you are serious about fitness gains, consider Coach My Ride. You’ll find 12 categories of training sessions created by “elite” cycling coach Lionel Rey-

naud to explore. This app offers hundreds of personalized cycling programs and useful tips that will certainly help you reach your goals. Workouts include warm ups, intervals and cool downs, training you for optimum performance. And if you prefer indoor cycling on rainy days, consider Cycle Cast. This app provides more than 500 spin workouts with highly motivating, personalized instruction. A nice feature is that you can choose the length of your workout. So, even if you only have 20 minutes before you have to rush off to work, you can still get a nice little spin in. The app offers a free, seven-day trial, with monthly or annual memberships available.
Bike Repair
And finally, consider Bike Repair, an app that contains 64 guides with expert instruction for fixing your bike. The instruction includes photos to help you better address a multitude of issues that you may confront on your ride. Bike Repair costs $3.99, but, when you consider the money you’ll save on repairs, it seems a bargain. With bike apps, you can train without pressure, guided by your own inner fire. Who knows? In time you may be ditching those hammerheads. —Mariah Reed Mariah Reed, an award-winning columnist for Cycling Quarterly, is a tenured theater professor at Broward College. Don't Be A Salmon!

Florida bicycle law reminds us it’s much safer to travel in the same direction as other traffic. Since drivers don’t expect to see vehicles (bicycles) coming toward them on the right, they may get flustered and not react quickly enough. Riding against traffic is particularly dangerous at intersections because drivers preparing to enter the roadway frequently do not look to the right.
So, don’t be a salmon. Go with the flow when riding your bike! Leif Parsons is an award-winning artist whose work appears regularly in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper’s, The Boston Globe and The Atlantic. See more of his work at www.leifparsons.com.

On the Road in Marrakech
O
Scarier Than Orlando
rlando is one of the most dangerous cities in the country for pedestrians and, by extension, cyclists, according to Smart Growth America, a nonprofit group that promotes safer, cheaper and more convenient ways to live and travel. Per capita, more people are maimed or killed on Orlando roads than in only two other major metro areas: Cape Coral-Fort Myers and Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville. Florida, in fact, has nine of the 11 most dangerous areas in the country for people on foot or pedaling. The reason is simple: Too many multi-lane roads that encourage motorists to drive way too fast. So, I get it. When I ride in Orlando, or elsewhere in the state, I’m hypervigilant, constantly scanning the roads for potential problems, from crazed motorists to potholes to unsupervised dogs. Though I frequently ride on streets, including fairly busy ones, I take bike-only paths whenever I can. That said, I have never been more intimidated by a road network than in

Pedestrians, cyclists, cars and the dreaded smoke-belching motor scooters mix nonstop on Avenue Fatima Zohra in the medina, or old city, of Marrakech. Traffic lanes and signals are more suggestions in the medina rather than hard-fast rules. Cycling Quarterly South Florida

Typical mid-day traffic along the Rue Ibn Khaldoun in the old city, or medina. In the background is the towering Koutoubia Mosque, the largest mosque in Marrakech. Marrakech, Morocco, where my wife and I and four friends recently vacationed. Let me state up front that we had a wonderful, exciting time and enjoyed every moment in the North African nation. But transportation there is unlike anything I have experienced, even in places like New York City and Amsterdam. In Marrakech, there are the usual cars, taxies, vans and trucks – and right next to them are countless two-stroke, smoke-belching motor scooters darting about, donkey carts, horses pulling carriages, tourists, residents, snake charmers and monkeys on leashes—and bicycles. (Believe it or not, Marrakech – population just short of 1 million—has a bike-share program, and I actually saw one or two of those shared bikes in use.) Everyone and everything is stopping and starting on narrow, poorly lit streets with traffic signals and lanes that appear to be suggestions rather than rules. To the untrained observer, it is every person and mode of transportation to his, her or its own self. Perhaps the most amazing of all was that during the four days we were there, I did not see one accident or person down after being struck by an animal or motorized contrivance. Compare this to the local section of any Florida daily newspaper, where invariably you will find a brief telling of a traffic-related fatality or serious accident.

Now, what I have described is largely confined to the old part of Marrakech, which was founded in 1062. The old city, often referred to as the medina, is a warren of hotels, residences, shops, souks (markets), restaurants and the like, many found behind faded red sandstone walls. Visitors become lost easily. The newer parts of Marrakech, which ring the medina, feature large resorts and businesses, as well as less congested roads. I didn’t experience those roads—a few of which have bike lanes along the right shoulder – until we went to the Atlas Mountains, about an hour’s drive to the west. Much to my surprise, I saw several cyclists heading for the mountains, where the roads seem fairly conducive to riding, some long, six- and seven-degree climbs notwithstanding. During a six-hour hike in the mountains, our guide Mohammed said he would gladly take me on a ride the next time I was in town. I think I will take him up on the offer. Certainly would beat riding the ancient stationary bike I found in the basement of our hotel. —Dan Tracy Dan Tracy is a recovering newspaper reporter turned freelance writer. D.C. Monuments Bike Tour A View from a Bike The highlight from the bike tour was the Lincoln Memorial. I remember parking my bike and walking up to that massive monument. The bike tour guide had told us there was a mistake in the walls, so I was determined to find it. The huge Lincoln Memorial made such an impression on me … especially from my bike seat.—Donnie Gale Going to Washington D.C. was an amazing learning experience. I learned a lot about our government and history. I had seen the Washington Monument in pictures, but I will never forget turning the corner on my bike tour and seeing it in person. It is such a magnificent monument … especially from my bike seat.—Lily Gale
W
e are Donnie and Lily Gale, 12-year-old twins from Land O’ Lakes, Florida. In July of 2017, we had a wonderful biking trip in Washington D.C. Our awesome grandparents Don and Judy Gale, aka Poo-pah and Ba, take each of their grandchildren on a trip to Washington D.C. when they turn 12. It was our lucky year! Since we are twins, we both got to go. Previously, our cousins took bus tours of the city, but that did not appeal to us as much, because we both love to ride our bikes. We decided to take a bike tour to have a more interactive learning experience. On our tour, the guide, who was also on a bike, was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us a brief history with fun facts about each monument. The tour included fun, monuments and a nice breeze. We rode and then parked our bikes to explore the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial, the MLK Jr. Memorial, the WWII Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Washington Monument. The tour was very flexible and gave us a chance to walk around and check out all of the monuments. The tour was about three hours but only four miles. This gave us a great time to sightsee, bond as a family and learn. 12

Donnie and Lily Gale and their grandmother, Ba, set out for their bike tour of the national monuments in Washington D.C. The bus tour would be pretty boring compared to the bikes. It would feel like a history classroom – just sitting, watching and listening. The bikes made the experience feel like a fun activity. We got some great exercise on a beautiful summer day, and we just happened to learn a few interesting facts as a bonus. We would definitely suggest doing the bike tour to our younger brother, Joe, when he turns 12 and is ready to go. He would be more interested in biking to the monuments and running around than any other way. He’s a busy guy! All in all, the experience was amazing, and we would definitely recommend the bike tour to anyone visiting or to anyone that lives nearby and wants to have a fun and exciting learning experience. —When Donnie Gale isn’t riding his bike and solving mysteries, he is a competitive soccer player. —Lily Gale enjoys cycling, gymnastics and playing the ukulele.

HOW TO USE THIS DIRECTORY Our Weekly Rides listings are one of the main reasons I started this magazine. “Where’s a good ride?” is a question I often hear, so I’ve provided a resource to answer it. Please let us know about rides we may have missed. These established rides are open to new riders. Listed times can be the actual departure time, so always arrive early, introduce yourself and ask questions. Rating skill levels can be challenging, so it’s best to expect the level to be faster than cited. Always wear a helmet and obey the rules of the road. Attaching a rear blinking light is a good idea, and a headlight at night is the law. Ride details include: DAY: Weekly Ride calendar starts on a Saturday and ends on Friday. TIME: The time the ride starts is the first item in the listing. SKILL LEVEL: Color-coded arrows indicate the maximum speed or average speed. DROP/NO DROP: If you have a mechanical issue or can’t keep up during a drop ride, you’re on your own. During a no-drop ride, the group will not leave you behind. CONTACT INFO: If contact info is not available, take a shot and show up. There’s a good chance there will be riders unless weather interferes. MAP LOCATOR: Geographic position of the ride on our foldout map.

Remember when you were travelling and you played license-plate poker or spuds and beavers? Here is a better suggestion for a game to play when on that family road trip/vacation. Have passengers count the number of cyclists they see on the road. It just might make them more aware of bikes on the road when they become motorists. Cycling Quarterly South Florida

AAA Roadside Assistance
Managing a bike breakdown when you’re miles from home has gotten a little easier, thanks to AAA. Increasingly, the auto club’s regional groups have begun to offer roadside bicycle assistance. The service is now available across most of the United States, including Florida. Roadside service technicians will transport a rider and their busted bike from five to 200 miles (depending on the user’s membership level) to “any point of safety.” You can go home, to a parking lot or even to a bike shop for repairs. Since AAA doesn’t offer repairs, they complement rather than compete with bike retailers. Information provided by Montrae Waiters, Sr. Program Consultant, AAA The Auto Club Group

CQ Spotlight on Indoor Cycling
F
irst and foremost, indoor and outdoor cycling are two different beasts! Of course, when a cyclist trains for an outdoor ride, they need to ride outdoors in a real-world environment. But it can be great to supplement that training with indoor cycling classes. Bonus! If it’s raining or you need to stay inside for some other reason, you can simulate a pack mentality with the energy of an indoor cycling class. So, why else should you be riding inside? Here are four reasons.
Photo: Marwan Shousher
1. Classes can simulate an outdoor ride Most indoor cycling classes are designed with a structured cadence that mimics the same safe and effective metrics you would use when riding on the road. This is achieved through the use of BPMs (beats per minute) when choosing music for classes. By matching speed with BPM, the RPM (revolutions per minute) metric on an outdoor road bike is simulated. For example, many professional cyclists will climb a steady hill at a solid rate of 96 RPMs. It so happens that 96 BPMs is a common cadence in the studio. How it helps outside: By following the instructor and matching your pedal

stroke with them, you are developing your endurance, stamina and discipline for those outside rides. 2. You improve your VO2 max When following the instructor and matching the cadence, you are also working on your VO2 max. This is the measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense exercise or maximum exertion. How it helps outside: Building VO2 max in the standardized environment of an indoor class will help any road cyclist to maintain sustained exercise in their outdoor environment even longer. (And, again, if it’s raining, nothing beats the opportunity to recreate that same physical exertion with an indoor class!) 3. You’re working the same muscles! We are using all of the same muscles inside as a cyclist would on a road bike. By clipping into the pedals, riders maximize even more on the use of the entire rotation. How it helps outside: You’re engaging the hamstrings, glutes and the entire posterior chain of the leg on the upstroke, strengthening these muscles for your outdoor ride.

4. You improve your overall performance When following the instructor and keeping in mind the differences between riding inside and outside, road cyclists can absolutely enjoy the benefits of a good spin class, while also improving overall performance! Of course, riding outdoors is so much more of an all-round experience than indoor cycling. But whether you’re training for a distance charity ride or a bike tour vacation or just getting back on your bike after an injury, an indoor cycling class can provide a valuable supplement to your outdoor pedaling miles – especially when that class is keeping you out of the prodigious Florida rain! Not only is Recyclable Bicycle Exchange (RBX) your community bike co-op, complete with with shared tools and a shared work space, we are also a used-bike sales and repair shop … and so much more. A volunteer-driven, bicycle-based Florida non-profit 501(c)(3), RBX works to promote cycling safety and increase bike awareness throughout our community. Used bikes donated to RBX are repaired and reallocated to the youth (and now adults, too) of South Florida. Since one of our goals is to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, we are happy that these new-to-me bikes allow kids to ride and play, while adults use their bikes for exercise – or as transportation to and from work or school. RBX awarded its first bike in 2009. Now, hundreds of new-to-me bikes, thousands of brand-new helmets, and countless single parts, repairs and adjustments are awarded each and every year. While the bikes are awarded on a needs-based criteria (ex: single-parent household, low income, health issues, etc.), all bike riders are eligible to receive a brandnew helmet from RBX, and their helmet will be custom fitted by a “certified helmet fitter.” We also offer one-onone and group bicycle repair training, bicycle-based employment training, bike rodeos and bicycle/pedestrian safety training – and we bike valet for public events, too. Want to learn how to fix a bicycle tire or adjust your derailleur? Volunteer with us! Founded in 2012, Magic City Bicycle Collective (MCBC) is a volunteer-run non-profit 501(c)(3) that aims to strengthen community bonds by educating the public on bike riding as a fundamental means of transportation. Volunteers teach basic repairs and maintenance. Learning how to maintain and repair your own bike boosts self-confidence, encourages you to learn other skills and helps you overcome challenges. Also, knowing how to fix a flat gives people confidence to ride more often and farther— and the more you ride, the healthier you become. Jack the Bike Man is a non-profit organization founded by Samuel H. “Jack” Hairston III in 2007 – however, Jack himself has been called Jack the Bike Man since 1999. Throughout the year, Jack the Bike Man gives away thousands of bikes to underprivileged kids, the homeless, women reentering society from prison, recovering addicts in halfway houses and people living below the poverty line. All of this is made possible with the help of volunteers and community contributions. Our free bicycles and helmets are provided through various programs, including an after-school program that teaches bike safety, bike repair and bike maintenance. We go to more than a dozen elementary schools every month and give a bicycle and helmet to a student who best exemplifies a certain character trait for that month. Our big Christmas giveaway program involves up to 200 volunteers. Last year we gave away 1,400 bicycles and helmets to children. We repair bicycles at our warehouse, which contains more than a dozen repair stations and thousands of bicycle parts, and we provide community service hours to students and adults, who learn basic bicycle mechanics. We also promote environmental sustainability by keeping used bikes out of the landfill and repairing them or reusing their parts for other bikes. The community’s need for bicycles is never ending, as is our organization’s need for funding, volunteers and used bikes that technicians can overhaul. The popularity of the organization has grown, and with it, the costs. Jack the Bike Man drives all over Palm Beach County collecting bikes and Conniston Middle School students who completed the parts. We could use Gotta Get a Bike after-school program at Jack the Bike your help: Contribu- Man. These students learned about bicycle safety, bike tions of money, time maintenance and repair.
