Do you want to learn Welsh? Congratulations! You’ve taken the most important step in learning Welsh - you’ve decided to join the thousands of people in Wales learning Welsh. Learning Welsh can be the key to a whole range of new experiences - making many new friends through our informal learning activities, social networking, watching S4C, listening to Welsh radio, music, books, magazines, Eisteddfodau and societies will be opened to you!

How quickly will I learn Welsh? Of course, your rate of success will depend on how much practise you can put in. It’s simple, the more Welsh you speak, in and out of class, the quicker you’ll learn. Don’t worry about making mistakes, everyone does, and it’s all part of the learning process! One way of getting extra practise is the many social activities organised by the staff of the Welsh for Adults Centre. You will have the chance to use your Welsh, whatever your level, in a relaxed atmosphere (no lessons!) with other learners and Welsh speakers. Various activities such as quizzes, twmpathau dawns, singing and treasure hunts as well as chats with other learners, are arranged. Why not try out your Welsh on a sympathetic ear and find out what’s on from the Centre?

Choosing the right course First of all it’s as well to be honest with yourself! If you don’t really want to learn Welsh, you won’t. But, if you are determined, you will succeed! Today, the emphasis is on speaking Welsh - forget your schooldays! Have fun whilst learning! Basically there are 3 types of courses for Welsh learners-

Fast Track: Getting there quickly! (4 hours a week) These courses are for those who want to learn quickly. Frequent contact with the language boosts your confidence. Progress is fast and the success rate very high, especially if you’ve done some Welsh already. If you can spare the time, these are the best courses for you. Book early as these courses are very popular!

Once a week classes (2 hours a week) Progress will be slower by learning once a week but you can supplement it with Day Schools and Weekend Courses. Despite the slower progress, many learners have enjoyed learning this way - and have succeeded.

Ar lein / Online Skype enables people to make free video calls from one computer to another and allows us to provide one to one lessons, wherever you are. All Welsh levels can be followed through Skype with the Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre. Cymraeg yn y Gweithle Welsh in the Workplace The Private Sector The Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre provides Welsh in the Workplace classes to many public, private and voluntary sector organisations in the Gwent area. Public bodies working in Wales are required to provide bilingual services in accordance with the Welsh Language Act. Training staff to speak Welsh is a vital component of this process. With more public bodies advertising jobs with the ability to speak Welsh being either ‘essential’ or ‘desirable’, bilingualism offers a wider choice of career prospects to staff. Research has also shown that bilingual staff are likely to earn 8 - 10% more than staff unable to speak Welsh. The ability to speak Welsh is increasingly being acknowledged as an essential skill to have in the workplace.

Does your employer provide you with Welsh classes in your workplace?

The Public Sector Training staff to speak Welsh is becoming more popular in the private sector, as companies realise the benefits of marketing in Welsh and promoting a bilingual public image. Recent research shows that the majority of Welsh speakers would prefer to deal in Welsh with bilingual companies. Indeed 75% of Welsh speakers are more likely to become customers of companies that use Welsh to market their products. Welsh speakers feel more content and confident speaking their first language, and companies are more likely to retain their custom. Surprisingly over a quarter of non-Welsh speakers are more likely to become customers of a company using Welsh. A new WJEC website is available to assist organisations in the private, public and voluntary sectors to identify their needs in relation to the Welsh language. The website is divided into two parts. Part 1 will help employers to identify the posts within their organisation that require language skills; Part 2 will help employers identify existing language skills of their workforce by assessing their skills online. It will be a very useful resource for large or small organisations offering bilingual services within Wales. Stori Ade Bates “Adrian Bates dw i. I started learning Welsh in 2007, When my employers offered all staff the opportunity to undertake an intensive (6 hours a week) Welsh course in the workplace. I was encouraged by my employers to use my Welsh and undertook some Welsh Medium training to become part of a small team of Welsh speakers to train all the staff in our organisation in Level 1 workplace Welsh. I continued with Welsh lessons at work on a reduced basis, attended weekend schools and some summer schools until I was offered “early release” from the Civil Service in 2012. I was really keen to share my Welsh with others and I am now doing a small amount of teaching Welsh in the workplace for Coleg Gwent at Mynediad level and undertaking a part time PGCE in order to qualify as a teacher in my favourite subject”

Cymraeg i’r Teulu Welsh for the Family

Cymraeg i’r Teulu Welsh for the Family Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre offers Welsh for the Family courses throughout the Gwent area, at a time and location suitable to all. The classes take place in schools, both Welsh and English medium, in nurseries and mother and toddler groups. With all children learning Welsh in our schools, parents, family and friends also want to learn Welsh so that they can support the children. The themes in Cymraeg i’r Teulu are interlinked with those in the Foundation Phase taught at school, making it possible for families to interact with children on topics they are already familiar with. The course includes games and songs making it possible for you to engage with children. There is also a special taster Cymraeg o’r Crud course for parents of babies 0-36 months old. Cymraeg o’r Crud is a course of 10 sessions, of one and a half hours each. It introduces simple language patterns and phrases such as “dere i newid dy gewin” (come and have your nappy changed) and “ti’n werth y byd” (you mean the world to me). Look out for our taster course 1,2,3,bant a ni. The main focus of all these Welsh for the Family courses is using Welsh with children in a relaxed, informal and fun way through • conversation • daily routine • singing • reading • playing games • commands • greetings and much more.

It is a good idea for any learner to start using the language outside the classroom straight away. We as a Centre understand how important it is for you as a family to be able to practise and progress using Welsh in an informal fun environment. There are several events and activities for you to enjoy as a family and plenty of opportunities to join in without feeling overwhelmed and confused. Fast track courses Beginner / Foundation Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre offer fast track classes as a quicker and very efficient method of learning Welsh. These are available for complete beginners to the language or for those with a little knowledge or background of Welsh. The Fast track courses (Mynediad Fast track/ Sylfaen Fast track) include one three hour session in class, and one hour on-line study. During the first year (Mynediad Fast track), learners will cover 30 units of work with one unit being covered every week. The final 30 units of work (Sylfaen Fast track) will be covered during the second year. The aim of the course is to learn Welsh through the medium of Welsh as far as is possible. The course is designed to enable the learners to use basic phrases in both the present and past tense very early on in the course so that learners are able to converse in the classroom without the use of English after only a few weeks. Although conversational Welsh is the main aim of the course, learners also get a chance to practise reading, writing and listening skills. At the end of the first year learners have the option of sitting their first examination at Mynediad (Entry) level at no extra cost. And at the end of the second year, the choice to sit the Sylfaen (Foundation) level of examination. Although learning Welsh through the Fast track courses requires a fair amount of commitment and drive from the learner, it can also give back a lot of satisfaction as progression is rapid. The classes are hard working with the pace being fast and steady but the methods of teaching are fun, informal and enjoyable.

One way of learning a new language is through the use of Skype - a computer programme that allows someone to make free video calls to another computer. The nice thing about Skype is that one can receive immediate feedback from the tutor and learn from corrections made in the language one learns. It becomes easier to learn a new language when one has someone else to correct the mistakes made when speaking the language and many people want to practise speaking. Learning Welsh through Skype is possible with the Gwent Welsh for Adults Centre. Don’t worry, help is here! Your tutor will prepare you for the exam in your weekly class. However, there are revision courses available too. These will take place in May and June prior to the exam. The courses will concentrate on passing the exam – how to gain marks and not how to lose marks. You will have opportunities to sit the oral exam – this is the most important part of the exam. Feedback will be given individually, with hints and tips on how to improve. Ask your tutor for further information about these exams – they are invaluable, especially for those of you looking to gain a qualification to add to your CV. Go ahead and give yourself a target of sitting and passing these exams. With regards to those of you learning in the workplace, always remember, two languages, two choices.
