Niura The glory of a forgotten kingdom. The richness of an ancient culture. The magic of the tales of 1001 Nights. All these and much more you can see and feel with Niura. Niura represents the perfect marriage between the art of jewelry and the manufactory of chronometers with the highest precision possible. The tourbillon combined with the breathtaking shine of over 2000 diamonds and rubies results in a dancing duo never seen in such brilliance. Because Niura is slightly larger than a common ladies’ watch, Giberg Haute Horlogerie invented a swinging frame [fig. 1] which allows Niura to cling perfectly on every wrist.

“Here at Blush we have really put on a show for our 10th anniversary. As a tribute to the Cannes Film Festival, we explore all film genres and roll out the red carpet to those stars who influence fashion and provide role models for women. Of course we review all the films as well as interviewing Penelope Cruz, Jade Lagardère, Li Bingbing and Miss Universe. Isabelle Adjani’s incandescent beauty is captured by Sandra Fourqui’s camera before we slip off for a weekend in Saint Tropez with Caterina Murino. We look for locations in Paris, New York, Hong Kong and Rome - they might be useful for a future shoot. We drop in on Los Angeles because cinema wouldn’t be what it is without Hollywood. Slimming, body and skincare, coaching, lioness mane, thalasso and organic fooding - Blush reveals all the secrets the stars use to look their very best for the cameras. We accessorise your look with a shopping trip at the end of the Fashion Weeks because they are the starting point for fashion. We try out Meghan Markle’s jewellery, definitely worthy of a queen of the screen. And naturally, because Blush is also a star and has a public to appease, we put in an appearance at the thousand and one social occasions that are a part of any glittering, glamorous life. As seen in this “All Star” edition in the form of a super production…”

“Blush is celebrating its tenth birthday with a whirlwind of excitement at the heart of the 71st Cannes Film Festival. Through luxurious publications and exclusive partnerships, such as the one with Baselworld, Blush creates a magazine in touch with its readers - and its advertisers, without whom this adventure would not be possible. In the era of an ever-encroaching Internet, there is still nothing quite like a glossy, just as there is nothing quite like people. We have built close ties not only with our advertisers but also with the celebrities who grace our pages. I would particularly like to thank Isabelle Adjani, Camille Lacourt, Caterina Murino, Florent Manaudou, Laura Smet, Olga Kurylenko, Béatrice Rosen, Estelle Lefébure and all those who have contributed directly or indirectly to the Blush adventure. Our special editions have also sprung from Blush’s expertise, from the Hotel de Paris Saint-Tropez magazine to The Gate Collection in Paris and Washington, via Rebellion Timepieces and the Clinic Lémanic in Lausanne, to which will now be added the private jet company Goodwill, Yana Nesper Jewellery and Maura Wasescha in St Moritz. Between two time zones, look for our exclusive reports from Paris to L.A. this autumn.”

Emerald

Harry Winston has a legacy as one of the world’s most important purveyors of diamonds, and the Swatch Group is keeping that heritage alive.Jewelled watches remain an important part of the company, including the new Emerald watch with diamonds, combined with the soft touch of pink sapphire. The Art Deco lines of the eight-sided case, set with 53 brilliant-cut diamonds, are a tribute to the emerald-cut, the favourite diamond shape of Harry Winston, who founded the company in 1932. The emerald shape is repeated on the dial as an outline composed of 44 brilliant cut diamonds set into a background of white mother-of-pearl. The frame is accented by pink sapphires, set at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and a larger, emerald-cut pink sapphire at the 12 o’clock position. The matching pink satin strap wraps around the wrist twice, reflecting a current trend in ladies’ watches.

Quai des Bergues Guilloché Havana Brown: style matters The CZAPEK & CIE. Quai des Bergues collection welcomes 2018 with an impressive series of unique-looking and colourful hand engine-turned dials, including the Quai des Bergues “Guilloché Ricochet” Havana Brown. The centerpiece of this collection, and indeed the Havana Brown limited edition, is the hand-engine turned dial using traditional “and very painstaking guilloché main” processing. This is French, state-ofthe-art dial-making in Haute Horlogerie and was initially invented for kettledrum decoration at the end of 18th Century before being retrieved by the watchmaking industry. The exclusive “Guilloché Ricochet” from Czapek represents the ripples of a stone skipped on a lake. The resulting hand engine-turned surface is like no other in its depth, intricacy and quality appearance - an aesthetic that cannot be replicated, not even with today’s modern manufacturing technologies. The Havana brown colour is created using a galvanic method to enhance the beauty of the engraving. The special gold, silver, palladium and platinum plate of the dial is adorned with applied rose gold hour markers that beautifully harmonize with the 42.5 mm millimeter-wide, 18kt 5N rose gold case. Limited edition of 15 pieces.

Ferdinand

Berthoud -Chronomètre FB-1R.6-1

The latest Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud Watch is inspired by marine chronometers, for which the 18th century watchmaker is famous. Driven by a fusee-and-chain mechanism, this regulator features an original display of each function, split over the dial. Hours are displayed in an arched window at 2 o’clock, and minutes are shown in a subdial at 12 o’clock. A complicated power reserve display dominates an opening in the space between 8 o’clock and 10 o’clock on the dial. The seconds are directly linked to the 60-second tourbillon, which is featured on the caseback side, along with the mobile-cone power reserve system. The dial is nickel silver that is given a vertical satinbrushed finish and then black rhodium-plated. It is a 20-piece limited edition. CZAPEK & CIE

Strom - Agonium “In Memoriam HR Giger”

Daniel Strom presents In Memoriam HR Giger watch, one of the final projects on which the Swiss artist HR Giger worked before his death in 2014. A veritable “wrist sculpture”, the timepiece features HR Giger’s legendary biomechanoid creature. Acclaimed for his “fantastic-realism” works, HR Giger shot to fame with his creation of the monster in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien, for which he won an Oscar the following year. Deeply saddened by the death of this man, who had also become his friend, Daniel Strom waited three years before presenting the watch that they had designed together. This exceptional creation, produced in 99 pieces, is hand-worked in the silver case. The elongated skulls of the biomecanoid creature extend from the lugs, while its body parts are etched into the case middle. The entirely hand-worked, in silver casted dial was inspired by another of HR Giger’s works, and one of his bestknown: the “ELP II” canvas painted with an airbrush in a single night. This creation is the sixth opus of Daniel Strom’s Agonium collection.

Hublot

- Big Bang Unico Red Magic

HUBLOT’s R&D department and Metallurgy & Materials laboratory has developed a new process for creating bright coloured ceramic. It took Hublot four years to develop and industrialise the process, which involves using heat and pressure in a way that sinters the ceramic without burning the pigments. This new material is much denser and therefore harder and more resilient than conventional ceramic. It was used to produce every case component of the Big Bang Unico Red Magic, in a colour that was chosen to symbolise power, passion and glory. Black highlights include the bridges, pushers and lug screws, which are made of polished titanium and black PVD. There are also black highlights in the red rubber strap. This is a 500-piece edition, with the caseback engraved “LIMITED EDITION” and “No XXX/500.

Giberg - Niura Drawing on his mastery of both jewellery and watchmaking, Swiss setter and goldsmith Andreas Altmann thrives on the challenge of creating unique and beautifully unusual timepieces. Niura is an ode to sensual femininity and his first timepiece. The watch features hinges that allow it to perfectly encircle the wrist of its wearer. These articulated case edges enclose a 5N red gold casing measuring 35mm across, with a transparent sapphire dial and caseback. The watch is powered by a Giberg Flying Tourbillon ‘Trilevis 6118’ Manufacture Calibre, made in-house and designed to ensure a power reserve of 72 hours. A fine structure, entirely set with diamonds, links the edges of the case to the lizard leather strap, on which a diamond-studded drop balances delicately. Its original design and highly technical expertise make this a unique piece of time-keeping jewellery.

The Paris Peninsula goes Japanese

This spring, the Peninsula Paris Spa takes you to Tokyo! For the third year in a row, the spa is celebrating the arrival of Japan’s cherry blossoms with “The Ritual of Sakura”. The treatment starts with a deep cleansing of the face, followed by a scrub, and then a massage of the lip contours, using manual relaxing techniques and Gua Sha, a detoxifying and regenerating Asian ritual. The procedure also includes a nourishing and plumping mask for the lips, during which a Kure Bazaar nail polish is applied. Finally, the treatment ends with the application of a Cha Ling lip balm, made from a Pu’er Tea, which contains antioxidant properties. Afterwards, there is nothing better to top this treatment off, than to head to our hair salon “La Suite” to discover Japanese Sinka hair straightening from the Tokio Inkarami care range. A revolutionary technology for a majestically beautiful look.

House 99 by David Beckham

Even as a child, the man whose face is now one of the most recognisable on the planet, loved to play with his image. Was this down to a childhood spent with his hairdresser mother or simply a case of wanting to stand out? The fact remains, the London footballer’s regular change of look has helped redefine masculine culture both in the UK and elsewhere. There was a time when barely had David Beckham sported a new hairstyle then it would become the latest fashion. These days there is much more to a man than his looks and the possibilities are endless. Drawing both on his experience and the advice of trend-setters, the new care range from House 99 for the beard, hair and skin, offers everything a man needs for a new look. Available at Sephora, at sephora.fr and at comptoirdelhomme.com

Body and Mind Connection by Dr. Claudia Aguirre

Get ready to look and feel 10 years younger! Dr Claudia Aguirre has joined the Six Senses Wellness Committee to support the launch of the group’s first anti-ageing holistic clinic at the new Six Senses Kaplankaya resort in Turkey. A neuroscientist, a mind-body expert and a guest lecturer at Stanford University, Dr Aguirre specialises in the relationship between the brain and the skin. Each programme begins with an advanced analysis of the skin, a diagnosis of well-being, sleep analysis, stress levels, hormonal balance, insulin resistance, intestinal imbalances and body toxicity. The results allow Six Senses’ wellness experts to create a tailored care programme. Another avant-garde approach is the notion of the brain’s beauty. The clinic also examines the relationship between the brain and the skin through our own perception of beauty and how we can become more confident and mindful.

Comptoir Sud Pacifique takes up residence in St Germain

In the heart of Paris’ Saint Germain district, 76 rue de Seine, the Left Bank boutique is ushering in a new era for this archetypal French perfumery. Owner, Valérie Pianelli-Guichard, is carrying on the work of the brand’s founders by preserving its niche status. With is Haussmannian moulded ceilings and natural oak flooring, the Saint Germain store has shed nothing of the traditional architecture of the quartier. Indeed, this respect for history only enhances the perfumery. This is a new sensory stopover in Paris for those who love fragrances made of beautiful ingredients and evocative names that take one on a faraway journey. Here you will find Aloha Tiaré, Immortel Cédrat and the wonderful Eau du Gouverneur. And, you can even create your very own custom-made perfume with an infinite combination of possibilities. Augustinus Bader inaugurates his Parisian address

It is within the walls of a historically listed building, once home to the writer Colette, that the Augustinus Bader brand has just opened its exclusive boutique. This bubble of harmony from Antonine Boisanté for the studio Moore, perfectly encapsulates one of the brand’s mottos, ‘biological wisdom’. Of course the main reason why we come to this extraordinary setting with its custom-made furniture is to buy the very best care products, but that’s not all. You can also find out about the brand’s origins. Professor Bader’s research in the field of stem cells, which inspired the development of the skincare range, is also clearly explained. Here you can also appreciate the extent of his unique approach to regenerative medicine, which aims to stimulate the body’s natural repair systems. This is a beauty experience which also caters for science enthusiasts. 84-85, Gallery of Beaujolais 75001 PARIS - +33( 0)1 40 26 2 1 77 Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 7pm.

Iris

Mittenaere

I

her plans after Miss Universe

n colour or in black and white on magazine covers, in Ninja Warrior on France’s Channel One, Iris Mittenaere enjoyed a brilliant career from Miss France to Miss Universe 2016, before joining the prestigious IMG Modelling Agency. Meet a universal beauty with 1.7 million followers. By Laure Delvigo - Photo © Sandra Fourqui After having been crowned Miss France and Miss Universe in 2016, what dreams does Iris Mittenaere have these days? I dream of professional success and personal fulfilment. I still have plenty of dreams – modelling, television – you should never stop dreaming! What have you taken from your childhood in northern France? An incredible culture and magical moments of sharing and love. I always played outside a great deal in the countryside where I lived. That taught me to respect nature and animals and to love people because there is a huge amount of solidarity in the North. You are managed by IMG, one of the biggest agencies in the world; what type of career would you like to have in modelling? I am lucky enough to be represented by IMG and we are going to work together to represent the kind of brands that match who I am. I love photo shoots – I get huge enjoyment out of them. I would like to continue working in this field and working with brands that share the same values as me. It’s a really interesting area to work in.

46

You are studying dental surgery; would you like to continue with this despite your success in front of the cameras? I haven’t graduated yet. In September I will have two years to go. I know it’s complicated because these are studies that I have to take up full-time again. That will require a major commitment and can’t be taken lightly. I’m going to have a go and try to finish my studies while carrying on with my modelling and television career at the same time. It’s a fascinating profession and I would like to qualify one day. You’re currently presenting Ninja Warrior with Christophe Beaugrand and Denis Brogniart, the famous presenter of the French survival TV show, Koh-Lanta. What was it like meeting them? It was great! They are so lovely; they look out for me and give me lots of advice. I am really lucky to be starting out with two such presenters who, as well as being extremely talented, are wonderful people! It really was a magical moment with lots of fits of the giggles and lots of emotion. I can’t wait for you to see it!

Who are your role models and why? I adore Charlize Theron for her absolute elegance and Cindy Crawford is my hero. I think she is sublime and chic and I’ve always been a fan! In a time of social networks, how do you feel about your body? I think that mentalities are changing and I’m glad about that. We need to learn to love ourselves as we are. We can’t be perfect; sometimes I would like to be slimmer and sometimes I’d like more curves. And when we look at women we realise that they all possess a different beauty but the most beautiful of all are those who have confidence in themselves. Take Ashley Graham – to me she is one of the most beautiful women in the world. She has self-confidence and is so incredible she puts everyone else in the shade. You have a figure to die for – do you follow a diet or play any sport in particular? I like eating, I love food so I don’t follow any special diet – I have a little of everything! When I’m travelling in particular I don’t ban anything from my diet because it would be a pity not to taste all the delicious specialties the world has to offer. I do sport for my health and it’s always better to have a

toned body! I was quite hung up about my body for a long time; I thought I was too thin despite a rich diet. These days I muscle up through sport and, above all, I try to feel good, this is mainly what sport gives me and it’s absolutely essential. Do you have a special, prephoto shoot beauty routine? I try to get an early night and I drink a lot of water the day before. I apply a moisturising mask the morning or night before the shoot and make sure my skin is really hydrated. You travel a lot; what are your tips to avoid jetlag? I sleep as much as possible on the plane with a hydrating cloth mask and I also drink a lot of water. I stretch out as often as possible. And I take melatonin in the evening. What are your favourite destinations? Tahiti, New York and Paris! What is in the pipeline? A book that’s coming out in a few months! It recounts my career of course, but you will also find in it my advice and my daily tips on how to build self-confidence. It’s my baby and my aim is to help young women become more self-assured and to feel good and loved.

ere she is; sublime, slender, jet-black hair, sapphire eyes, sculptural figure. The magic works, before the flashbulbs or away from them. Luminous, relaxed and exceptionally gracious, Jade Lagardère is one of those women we would all like to resemble. 5’9” tall, this radiant 27-year-old mother in a pin up’s body writes comic books and practices boxing. And if her marriage to one of the CAC-40’s top executives is the talk of the world of celebrities and finance, the author of Amber Blake is not just a beautiful woman in a glossy magazine. Add her words to the image. Meet a top model without a filter. By Laure Delvigo - Photo Sandra Fourqui.

You are an international model, what did this experience mean to you? Lots of things! Thanks to this profession, I was able to travel all over the world, learn foreign languages, like English and Spanish. Even if my mother comes from Oviedo, she never spoke to me in that language. I worked a lot in Barcelona and it was very frustrating not to be able to answer even though I understood! This profession is also the discovery of different cultures. The experience also teaches you the patience to spring back when faced with failure. At castings, you’re sometimes told: “you’re too tall, your hips are too wide, you’re not enough this, too much that”. It’s difficult but you have to learn how to take it, it builds character. This enabled me to become what I am today. Are you more photo or catwalk? I was above all a catwalk girl; Victoria’s Secret is my dream! And moreover it’s really in contradiction to the person that I am. I have always been very shy and quite self-critical and modelling has always been a way for me to accept myself. Writing is kind of a painkiller for me, and I could say the same thing for modelling. On a shoot or in a fashion show, I prefer to be completely transformed. Usually they use very nude makeup on me and I don’t like it. It’s strange, because the result is very pretty, but it’s too much “me”. In this profession, I love to play a role. When I’m in front of the camera, it’s not Jade any longer.

Your worst experience in fashion? I shall always remember a shoot in Spain... We were two models and the client was very demanding. From the first day she kept calling me by the other model’s name. At first I said nothing, then when I reminded her of my name, she replied: “ It’s the same thing”. Everything went wrong; she never stopped making unpleasant comments. At one point I wanted to call her and I used the wrong name. She corrected me, and then I said: “It’s the same thing isn’t it?” There was a silence; then she smiled. In the end, the photo shoot went well! The best? Doing a shoot for Blush! What do you think of the new generation of top models, like Gigi and Kendall compared to the era of Claudia and Naomi? There’s no getting around it! I began modelling with the “Top Model” generation; they are my idols. Moreover, Naomi was dubbed “black panther” and I “white panther” when I first started out. I was doing haute couture in Rome and out of ten castings, I did the ten shows, I took them all. My agency couldn’t believe it and that was how it all started. You’re described as a “bomb”. What do you feel about that? I’m flattered! However what people don’t know is that I put on a great deal of weight with my three pregnancies; 57 lbs for the first, 61 for the second and 66 for the last… I thought I would never lose it all. I had

intensive sessions with a coach for several months to get my figure back. I mostly do cardio and I box. I adore that. How long have you been boxing? Since 2011, but to be honest I haven’t done any boxing for a year. It’s one of the sports that I prefer; it corresponds to my temperament. Not that I’m violent, but I’m a complete tomboy! I grew up with three older brothers, so go-karting, video games and amusement parks hold no secrets for me. I’m a regular guy (laughter)! A speed fan, I would have loved to be a F1 racing driver. How do you achieve a balance in your life as wife, mother and model? Very easy, me I know how to do everything! (laughter) You write comic books. Tell us about it… I’ve written scenarios since I was very small; it was my way of expressing myself. This passion returned in 2013 when I was expecting my second daughter, Mila. I felt the need to write again; then I created the character of Amber Blake. Amber, because my second name is Ambre and for Blake I simply began with the word “black” in English because it’s quite a sombre story. In this comic book, I evoke all the subjects that have always concerned and appalled me: rape, paedophilia, drug addiction, prostitution, human trafficking... I wanted to treat it in an entertaining way since I think this is a good approach to discussing such

subjects. The positive side of all that is that Amber Blake is a very strong person, who manages to overcome whatever she has lived through. It is also a message of hope. In fact, Amber Blake also illustrates the ills of our society, doesn’t she? I receive many messages from people affected by this story. Amber Blake brought a certain distress to light and they could not finish it. However, readers told me: “Thank you, Jade, it’s true, we must go on fighting and not give up.” How do you feel about the media coverage of your marriage to a CAC-40 top executive? In the early days, I took it very badly. We were hounded because of the difference in our ages and height... People love to stick labels on others, but we all do it, so I can’t blame them! I really suffered from it, but now, seven-and-a-half years later I can step back from it. When you know me, you realise that I am not like the image I reflect! Your plans? Besides modelling, Glenat Publishing is releasing volume II of Amber Blake in June. It’s available on line, at the Fnac, in all good bookshops and supermarkets, for example. It’s quite easy to find. I just finished writing Volume III. We are also talking about publishing it in the US. Now my most important project is to produce Amber Blake as a TV series or a feature film. I would love to give my character that gift!

P

énelope Cruz is famously proud of her Spanish heritage – indeed, you will struggle to find a global film star who goes about both their private and professional life with as much vim, vigour and veracity as the beautiful 43-year-old directs towards her native country. By Karen Overton

Cruz’s dedication to Spain is complex, but loyal. Yes, she’s sparred with Hollywood, even embarking on a three-year relationship with one its greatest sons, Tom Cruise. But despite flirtations with France – in the form of her ambassadorial work for L’Oréal - and philanthropic projects in locations as distant as India and Nepal, the sense was that the actress would always return to her home country. She has achieved that without question. A stunning home in Madrid, a perfect marriage to fellow Spaniard and actor Javier Bardem, and two children: Leo, seven, and Luna, three. But looking at Cruz’s film choices offers a further nod to the pride she has for her country of birth, choosing to take up countless Spanish-language productions in preference to bigger paydays in Tinseltown.

And while her recent portrayal Donatella Versace in Ryan Murphy’s latest American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace may have seen her stepping over the border to Italy, her commitment to iconic, informative and important characters means she will continue to go about her work with style, enterprise and humility. Sure enough, the Oscar winner lights up the screen as the Italian powerhouse, who takes over the reins of the family business when her brother (Edgar Ramirez) is gunned down by serial killer, Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss). It’s the role Cruz was born to play as she nails the performance with biting flamboyance and strength. And yet, in person, she is a contrast of Versace brashness. With tousled raven locks over a structured Chanel tweed jacket and jeans, she’s a cool mix of subtle elegance and Latin fire. Her dark eyes give an intense gaze while her full lips pout and crease. “I didn’t want this to be an imitation, I wanted it to be an honest, genuine representation of who she is, an amazing, inspiring woman who I look up to,” Cruz explains. “Because I really love her. I feel connected.” Away from the set, Cruz is reserved and cautious, lively but quiet. In all, you feel she is in a good place right now, and clearly wants to stay there.

After nearly 30 years in the business, how do you look at your career then and now? I feel very lucky to be in a place in my career where I am still given wonderful opportunities to work with talented directors and actors - I feel very blessed. And I think the more work I do, the more interesting opportunities I’m getting, which is wonderful. Let’s talk first about your latest project. What was your initial feeling when asked to play Donatella Versace? I had an inner conflict and was a little scared. I thought maybe about saying no but then I am a big admirer of Ryan’s work and his team, so I was torn. When he called me, I wanted to say yes but it was a difficult choice, one of the most difficult I have made in my career, because I knew what a great undertaking this was and how sensitive and raw these events still are for the family. I knew Ryan would insist

52

on total respect and tread very carefully, but there was still so much to consider. And I said to him, ‘I want to say yes because I love everything you have ever done, but I have to speak with Donatella first; I have to grant her that respect and see what she thinks, and only after that can I make my decision’. So did you become friends with Donatella? I don’t have a close relationship with Donatella, but we have worked together and known each other for many years and I have nothing but utmost respect for who she is and for the Versace family. Were you nervous to approach her about it? I was not nervous. Maybe I should have been, but we knew each other, and she knew of the plans to make this project about her family. But yes, I should have been nervous to say those words, ‘Okay, I re-

ceived an offer to play you’, but I wasn’t. I was calm, and she was very respectful and warm. She didn’t know you were going to play her before? No, I told her, it was the first time she learned. How did the conversation go? We spoke for one hour. It was amazing. She was very generous with her stories about her life and about her experiences, we opened up to each other. It was a beautiful, emotional conversation and I was so very blessed to have that audience with her. And afterwards she said to me: ‘I feel if someone is going to play me, then I am very happy and comfortable that you are going to do it.’ That was my blessing there. That was all I needed. Is it more difficult playing someone from real life, when you know them? Or easier? Probably it’s more difficult.

Playing someone who is real and alive is a huge responsibility; but playing someone who you’ve met, it’s very intimidating. How did you go about learning how to play her? I had her in my ear for three months. Everywhere I went, I had her voice in my head; I became a little obsessed maybe. I wanted every piece of footage out there so I could feel fully prepared and researched. Donatella had given me her blessing and I was going to work as hard as I could for her. The trouble was trying to learn to speak English with an Italian accent, and Donatella has the most unique tone and signature to how she speaks. My voice is very different, compare to hers, it’s very high. But her voice, her way… it’s unmistakeably her. It’s very rock and roll!

cinema

Did you ever meet Gianni? No, I never met him. I have worked with Versace many times, dressing me. But no, I never meet him. But I love the designs – they are timeless, and every time I have worn them, I feel transported and so regal. They are pieces of art, beautiful creations. Do you still feel driven as an actress? For a long time I enjoyed working very intensely and travelling a lot. I loved being able to explore many different kinds of characters and I was always full of energy and passion. I’m still very passionate when it comes to my work, but I’d rather make one or two movies a year and that’s it. My family is my priority now. Both you and your husband are actors, so is scheduling a problem for you to both find that balance with your family? I think we are very lucky in our

professions to have the ability to bring our family to work with us. Not many parents have the same luxury or flexibility, it’s an advantage you cherish. When they were younger, it was not so easy to move around as a unit. It was too disruptive, but it’s much easier now. What does being a mother mean to you? Everything changes the second you become a parent - you start seeing the world through different eyes. It’s a revolutionary change. It even changes your relationship with nature. You experience many things for the first time again - that’s the real beauty of it. You get to revisit your own childhood because now you’re experiencing it with your own children. I think the relationship between a mother and her children is a very intense and joyful experience, and it’s important to me to help my children grow up to be confident adults.

So I always try to bring my whole family along with me while I’m working. What’s the secret to staying looking young? I drink a lot of water and try to get a good night’s sleep even though that’s difficult with a young child. Since I’ve become a mother, I have a more womanly body now. Your body changes when you go through this life-giving event, and it’s something magical. I try to stay in good shape, but I don’t obsess about it. I usually go to the gym with friends and I love swimming and diving. I enjoy cooking and eating well, and I never go on extreme diets. I’m more careful of what I eat, but I love food and that will always be one of my great pleasures in life.

see movies. Sometimes people will stop to talk to me and ask me to take a selfie with them, but usually they are very kind and friendly. It’s a pleasure for me to be able to have that contact. How would you describe your life these days? Every day I understand more about life and I learn a little more about who I am which is always the biggest question. But I feel good. I have a beautiful family and a job that I love, and which gives me a lot of freedom. I feel very grateful.

And life in Madrid is good? Yes, I’m able to go everywhere. I go to shopping at the supermarket, the pharmacy, and I go

A BRIDE FOR THE PEOPLE

S

he’s gone from being a vaguely unrecognisable character in a well-constructed if critically underperforming Netflix series to one of the most talked about women on the entire planet. Her every move and every choice are now under intense scrutiny… from what she wears and says, to her mannerisms and interactions. And yet, Meghan Markle appears to be enjoying the ride. By Richard Aldhous

Yes, she has been thrown in at the deep end of the royal family, that notoriously stuffy institution. At the same time, she is offered very little practical support (although Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is rumoured to be guiding her through the various challenges that present themselves with every passing week), and yet Meghan Markle’s ability to charm and entertain means that, for many years

to come, we may have a focal point for modern royalty – a member of high society we can relate to and be proud of. The 36-year-old, star of the hit TV series Suits has certainly had a few butterfly moments, but in every breath she comes across as grounded, modest and just a little appreciative of the opportunity she has; not just to live a life beyond the dreams of many mere mortals, but to put into effect very real and very necessary changes to the fortunes of so many, the world over. The bigger question may not be whether Meghan is ready to embrace royalty, but if the royal family is ready to embrace a completely new type of personality because, let’s be frank, barely a generation ago, the concept of a divorced American, mixed race actress, who attended a Roman Catholic school, marrying the son of the next King, would have been treated as folly. But this is a woman with style, charisma and an incredible talent to get people to take a new view on convention. She is carefully measured, discrete and modern, and straight away the royals have taken Meghan to their hearts, as have the British people. We await with excitement to discover how the next chapter pans out, but we’re certain it will be undertaken with the immaculate style and finesse that we have come to expect of Meghan Markle.

ife is really opening up for you now, but you have worked hard for what you’ve achieved… Oh yes, absolutely. I undertook a number of very normal and very boring jobs when I was going through university and, beyond that, when I was trying to make my way as an actress. I remember doing calligraphy; I was a hostess at a restaurant — and all those things that actors do. “My father knew how hard it is for an actor to get work, so he above all people was so proud that I was able to beat the odds. Obviously when you succeed you do it for yourself, but there has always been such a big part of me doing it for other people in my life as well, because they deserve that.

Bosses, that breakthrough finally arrived in 2011, with Suits. Was it a thrill or a relief? All I know is it was definitely the right thing at the right time, and I have a lot to thank Suits for. It was the best career move I ever made and it has opened so many doors for me well beyond the small screen.

You had an unconventional upbringing in the sense that your parents separated when you were young, but you have always described it as a very happy childhood… Absolutely. And I still absolutely believe in the traditional family unit. But at the same time, I also stand by the fact that families can exist and thrive in the most challenging of circumstances, and really it’s the love and support of those around you that counts, nothing else. “What’s so incredible, you know, is that my parents split up when I was two, but I never saw them fight. We would still take vacations together. My dad would come on Sundays to drop me off, and we’d watch Jeopardy! eating dinner on TV trays, the three of us... We were still so close-knit.

Clearly you think a lot of Harry and the time you’ve had together? Well Harry and I were able to get to know each other that way… just to take the time to be able to go on long country walks and just talk. “And meeting the Queen was incredible. I think to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honour and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother. All of those layers have been so important for me. When I met her, I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. She’s an incredible woman. “And then everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of Princess Diana’s stones and obviously not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us ... It’s incredibly special to be able to have this ring.

It seems that given how content you are with the past, you can comfortably focus on the future? I won’t dwell on the past, emotionally or professionally. I have a view that life is a journey and it’s never about reaching an end destination, it’s just about soaking up those experiences along the way, and that’s what I’ve always tried to do, since my first break in acting. After stints in CSI: Miami, 90210, General Hospital, Remember Me and Horrible 56

The first meeting between you and Harry was very casual, right? Well yes - the only thing I wanted to know was, ‘is he nice?’ If he wasn’t kind, it didn’t seem it would make much sense. “For both of us it was really refreshing. Given that I didn’t know much about him, everything I’ve learned about him I’ve learned through him.

How do you see the future mapping out? I dream of having a family but it’s all about balance. I have so much happiness in my career and am fortunate to travel the world and see so many amazing things - yet it will also be nice to be anchored to something grounded and in the same place. Raising a family will be a wonderful part of that.

LI BINGBING

CARL F. BUCHERER

“我们都有一颗不随波逐流的心,内心向往经典”

L

i Bingbing is one of the most famous movie stars in China. She cemented her place in Hollywood at the beginning of 2013, with two blockbuster performances in Resident Evil: Retribution and Transformers: Age of Extinction. On her road to success, she never slowed down or gave up. Instead, she continued to challenge herself with various roles, such as in the sci-fi action movie Guardians of the Tomb, which she also produced. Li Bingbing will also appear in the movie adaption of author Steve Alten’s novel The Meg alongside top Hollywood actors. The beautiful actress became the first global brand ambassador for Carl F. Bucherer in 2016. Despite her success, Li Bingbing has never forgotten the gift she received from Carl F. Bucherer in 2003. “I was given an amazing white-gold watch from Carl F. Bucherer, and it made a lasting impression. It is an honour to be embarking on this wonderful, global partnership with Carl F. Bucherer to be the first global brand ambassador of the brand,” she explains. Li Bingbing is not only an international movie star, but also an environmentalist. Her various commitments include cooperation with UNEP and other important NGOs such as WildAid and WWF on numerous environmental campaigns. She was the first Chinese woman to speak at the UN Climate Change Conference. In 2016, Li Bingbing and the United Nations Environment Program launched a global “Wild For Life” protection campaign. 58

In 2018, Li Bingbing and UNEP re-initiated activities to invite leaders from various industries to join in promoting the protection of endangered wildlife and nature. On top of that, Li Bingbing is also a fashion icon. She believes that the timepieces created by this independent watch manufacturer embody innovation and distinguished luxury, timeless elegance and a love of detail. Does Li Bingbing have a favourite Carl F. Bucherer timepiece? Yes, she replies, without hesitation: Manero Peripheral. “This watch looks really stunning, a beautiful statement on the wrist. In the past, usually men wore a large dial watch. Now, it is a popular trend for girls to wear bigger watches too. It is great for Carl F. Bucherer to also introduce this kind of ladies watch that is handsome, which can bring out the confidence of the girls. Moreover, I like the colour of the dial very much, the brown mother-ofpearl dial is rare on the market, and its colour is very impressive. I also appreciate the movement of the watch. The CFB A2050 movement inside this timepiece is manufactured by Carl F. Bucherer. I think it’s not easy for a watch brand to create its own movement in addition to the watch entirely in-house. This shows the watchmaking competence of the brand, and its persistence of watchmaking excellence for over 130 years. Each timepiece is crafted with such attention to detail, originality and sophistication.”

ucerne, March 2018. Carl F. Bucherer was founded in Lucerne in the year 1888. It is here in the heart of Switzerland that Swiss entrepreneur Carl Friedrich Bucherer opened his first shop selling watches and jewellery. He created timepieces that combined extravagance with aesthetic appeal and his name rapidly became a synonym for high-quality products, tradition and innovation. This first shop has since grown into a successful international luxury watch brand. It has become internationally renowned for skilfully combining the highest watchmaking expertise with an unmistakable style of exquisite refinement. Outstanding watchmaking excellence

顶尖制表技术

Every timepiece that leaves Carl F. Bucherer’s manufacture is a miniature work of art. Hundreds of components seamlessly combine to make a Carl F. Bucherer watch a masterpiece of the fine art of watchmaking. Every timepiece has its own beating heart: the movement, which is the quintessence of innovation, precision and beauty. Today, Carl F. Bucherer is one of Switzerland’s leading watch manufacturers, developing outstanding mechanical movements and watches in its own manufacture in Lengnau, Switzerland.

Pioneering Peripheral Technology 2008 marked a significant milestone in the history of Carl F. Bucherer, when the company became the world’s first watch manufacturer to create an automatic watch movement series that is driven by an external rotor. The “peripheral rotor” which powers the watch, revolves around the movement and provides an unrestricted view of the exquisite watchmaking craftsmanship inside the watch, as the movement is not concealed by a conventional winding rotor. A second movement family, the CFB A2000, followed suit in 2016. At Baselworld 2018, Carl F. Bucherer launched the world’s first calibre CFB T3000, with a tourbillon construction, which is the first of its kind. All three movements were entirely designed and developed in-house.

The Manero Peripheral Boutique Edition, limited to 188 watches, driven by the in-house CFB A2050 caliber, which draws its energy from a peripheral rotor

a short essay on the selfie

t is more than a trend – it’s a phenomenon, and a planetary one at that. Indeed, it is impossible to go more than 500 metres without passing someone taking a selfie. So what is behind this strange habit of photographing yourself? Blush has been doing a little research for you. By Quitterie Pasquesoone - Photo © Luka Lajst

The selfie, the key to happiness? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. A photo with friends shared on Facebook, another with someone famous posted on Instagram – we have all shared a selfie at one point or another. This is not just a popular pastime; for some the selfie has even become a way of existing on social networks. And the risk, if you aren’t careful, is that you will be reduced to an image and a sometimes ghostly one at that. And with reason. This “digital self-portrait, generally taken with a smartphone and published on social networks” as it is usually defined, helps make people happier. Psychologists from Toronto University claim that those who take selfies see themselves as more attractive and nicer thanks to those selfies. So they provide a real boost to your self-confidence.

Me, me, me “Please look at me!” This is how we could sum up the selfie. It is a never-ending quest for the right photo and the best profile, touching up images and adding filters. For some, the selfie has become a real art form and many invest a lot (an awful lot) of time and ef66

fort in controlling their virtual image. It is a cult of me which celebrate the narcissist vision of the human being like no other, seeking by whatever means possible and thanks to technology to promote oneself and thus assuage a hidden fear of abandonment. This is what is sometimes behind an addiction to selfies.

The flip side of a fashion But after all, what harm is there in this quest for recognition? Seeking self-confidence is rather positive you might say. Yes, but be aware it can backfire and many are those who have suffered from it. When dealing with the selfie phenomenon you do in fact need to armour yourself against criticism which can sometimes be hard to take or, worse still, indifference, the bête noire of disciples of the discipline. The “like” cult and the world of social networks can indeed be cruel if you get in too deep. A constant desire for recognition in the eyes of others, when not satiated, can lead to a slow undermining of your self-esteem. So is there a good kind of selfie? Not really, simply a self-confidence to be built (or rebuilt). And even then, is the selfie the best option? The jury is still out.

Being coached the new way to a better way 68

psy

A

re you a sprinter or more a long distance runner? Whether you are looking to restore your self-confidence, develop your skills or carry out a little worthwhile introspection, the answer is the same: coaching. Patience and willpower are the key words here; indeed learning to run fast won’t make us feel better – or at least not on its own. What you need to do is to learn to love running for a long time, and to learn to feel better over the long term. Unlike traditional psychanalysis, based on better accepting and understanding your past, your coach (whether for your professional, sporting or love life) is interested in straightening out the present. By definition a coach is a trainer, a consultant and an expert and he or she is likely to hit you where it hurts. They aim to identify your inner conflicts in order to access a liberating self-awareness. In societies disconnected from what is real, the coach seems like an “easy” and long-term solution, an ally for those wanting to reconnect with the here and now. Coaching is like investing in a long term in which the “self” is a priority we need to rediscover – and love. So how are you feeling? By Sophie Combot

Physical and mental Do you want to lose weight with the help of a coach? French Thai and kick boxing champion, Jean-Yves Davison, has a very straightforward theory: his clients do not know their own strength. The man who set up the high-end gym, the Noble Art Club, goes further: “90% of people who consult me do not know themselves and run themselves down. We help them become themselves by targeting the real reasons that brought them to us.” Setting up a follow-through is essential to building a trust-based relationship. “We believe in the benefits of relationships and communication,” explains Jean-Yves. “Well-being lies in our individual balance. People are looking for a place where they can feel at ease but they also want to be loved and supported.” Slimming down is one thing but doing so without taking into account the mental aspect would be a mistake. That’s why the Noble Art Club has turned boxing into a central and allround sport. The reason behind this is that this sport includes an oft-forgotten benefit: pain. The suffering caused by taking a bad punch works like a booster shot; it reminds us that our mistakes can hurt, so this is about not getting bogged down in a state of denial. Jean-Yves took something fundamental away from time spent living in South America. “Athletes there know how to build performance out of nothing”

he says. Having fun while you improve your performance is a key concept for those looking to build sound and lasting self-confidence. It’s a logical idea; if each session demands too great an effort, there’s a strong chance you will not stick to your targets over the long run. And it’s true as well, we learn better through pleasure than pain.

Dividing your fears to better conquer them Losing weight is a battle common to so many of us, but it’s not the only one. Lucie Mariotti is often called upon to help people get over a painful breakup. A “Love Coach”, she likes to refer to her clients as students. A national treasure in France,

she owes her success to her many appearances on television shows. She sees coaching as highlighting our strong points and becoming aware of who we really are. While matters of the heart are her core business, her vision is based on three key word that are essential to any kind of commitment: lucidity, compassion and acceptance. Lucie holds three tenets true and says they have formed an unshakeable foundation enabling her to move forward and live serenely. The first is “Everything in life is perfect”. Everything has a meaning; pain and failure are necessary in guiding us towards more success. The second is: “Only love and fear exist”. Indeed they are the primary feelings that govern us. All other, ancillary emotions

such as anger or hate flow from them. Lastly, “Everything is connected”. This doesn’t mean Lucie is a firm believer in the idea that our destinies are in the hands of the gods, but she does think things happen for a reason and that it is important to understand their meaning. She likes to recall the words of Nelson Mandela: “I never lose; I either win or I learn.”

The emotional striptease After suffering a burnout, Lucie Baudon made a choice: she decided to get better and put a stop to the life she had been living. Lucie worked in communications for a major company when she started developing eating and relational problems. Above all, she no longer believed in herself. A dancer at heart, she is one of the only professionals in France who is an expert in a parallel coaching method known as Circling. Based on the movement and fluctuations of vital energies, she defines it thus: “The circling touch in coaching creates the possibility of exploring in depth the relationship the client has with their goals or their issues and so helps them to develop lasting confidence and well-being.” Surpassing yourself is not reserved solely for top-flight athletes. Gaining awareness is neither a miracle nor a turnkey solution; it is the power of everything to everyone. Coaching is part of a trend that reveals a desire for a better life.

Isabelle Farrugia as soft as a python

Isabelle Farrugia is the name of a label that has already hypnotised all fans of handbags. Handbags, shoulder bags, evening bags, maxi-pocket or mini-clutch – who could resist?! Material girl The one material Isabelle Farrugia has really made her own is python. This exotic and so noble skin is what ensures the softness and suppleness of each item. The designer’s handmade collections are created using “Batik” python with its visible black scales and “stone” python which is more matte in appearance. The brand’s added value is undoubtedly the

infinite range of colours on offer, not forgetting the impeccable finishes designed first and foremost with your comfort in mind.

Light and supple The brand’s promise is to “stay light”. When choosing an Isabelle Farrugia bag, you don’t have to choose between “beauty” and functionality”; python is such as wonderful material

that it simply gets better as it ages, gradually developing a patina. If you needed any more convincing then the mirrors in the flaps, the smart pockets and the magnets will do it.

Zoé bags The feedback Isabelle Farrugia hears time and time again is: “You can tell your bags were designed by a woman.” And proof of this can be seen with the

brand’s trademark model - Zoé. In this super light and super well-designed shopping bag we find, to our delight, a little pochette in python and a mirror on a plaited string. Vogue!

Do you feel like prolonging Fashion Week and playing at being a chic Parisian? Are you in need of beauty, glamour, top models and stilettos? If you answered ‘yes’ without hesitation then you are, undoubtedly, In Fashion! Because that is the title of the wonderful photo exhibition being held at the Royal Monceau hotel. The curator, Art Photo Expo, offers a comprehensive selection of fashion shots from the 1950s to the present day. From iconic Bettina to Carla and from Chanel to Versace, this is a beautiful journey back in time in praise of the greatest designers and photographers. A true lesson in fashion; inspired and inspiring. Did someone say vintage? By Yvo Deprelle.

P

hotography and fashion are two arts that have been intimately linked since the beginning of the last century, since Haute Couture first came into being. In fact, they were practically born at the same time! The former enabled the exciting creations of the latter to be preserved forever on the pages of a magazine. Photography made readers aware of changes in style as much as changes in society; it bore witness and provided a memory. And during the printed press’s boom years of the 1950s, this alliance grew stronger and matured. The In Fashion exhibition is a fabulous panorama of 50 years of glamour. Some 20 leading photographers - Claude Azoulay, Pierre Boulat, Michel Comte, Jeanloup Sieff and Gian Paolo Barbieri to name but a few – pay homage to the major designers. Chanel, Dior, Saint Laurent, McQueen, Versace; they are all there, accompanied by the crème de la crème of top models. From the quintessential Bettina in 1955 by Georges Dambier to Simon Procter’s Chanel rocket in 201.

Touchy! As well as a classic take on fashion, here you can enjoy a glimpse of the private world of designers through a number of rather touching portraits: Sonia Rykiel, pensive with a huge cigar in her hand (Mathieu Walter), Christian Louboutin impish behind a stiletto (Pascal Chevalier) or Yves Saint Laurent, looking sad in his living room (Pierre Boulat, 1974). Far from the spotlights and the catwalks, here the prism is tender, almost fragile… “The fashion photo leaves no-one indifferent and remains a reflection of an era and of society. With this exhibition I wanted to assemble the best shots of these photographers in order to pass on this heritage to the public,” explains Audrey

Trabelsi, the exhibition’s curator and co-founder of Art Photo Expo. She has certainly done a good job and the luxury hotel provides a wonderful setting!

Carla and Linda forever! This is such a rich retrospective covering such a long period we could write reams and reams about it. Instead, the news team wanted to share a few of our favourites and believe me, picking them was no easy task! You know us well enough by now to know we couldn’t forget the 1990s and our high school friends! Yes, those girls who were the stuff of dreams for whole generations – more than just models, they were the first supermodels in the history of fashion. Naomi, Cindy, Christy, Claudia, Carla and Nadja; these names still ring out because these were the most beautiful women in the world, amazons without equals! Some photos sum up this period perfectly: Thierry le Goues’s giant, catsuit-clad Linda Evangelista stepping out of a billboard on Times Square – a sexy and dominatrix catwoman ready to take on New York! Philippe Robert for Harper’s Bazaar sees our own Carla Bruni as a painted gypsy, a cigarette at her lips. The pout is sexy, cold, almost vengeful. Lastly, for Vogue Michel Comte gathered together a dream team of super models in 1994 (Claudia, Carla, Shalom, Nadja and friends) for a family photo that was the epitome of glamour at Atelier Versace. Strike a pose girls; you are the fairest of them all! So we can all be “in fashion” and, what’s more, the exhibition is free and the photos are up for sale!

BEAM YOURSELF UP TO GALAXY FASHION! What do Kenzo perched atop an elephant, Gaultier snoozing in a Jean-Paul 2.0-style papal robe and Vivienne Westwood as Marie-Antoinette guarded by a naked faun have in common? Has a new virus caught hold of fashion designers? A velvet (and lace) revolution? A moment of madness? Well, almost! All these deliciously offbeat portraits were taken by the photographer JeanMarie Périer in the early 1990s for Elle magazine. Now Photo12 Gallery is giving you a chance to (re)discover these amazing shots in a stunning and astonishing exhibition: Fashion Galaxy!

H

e didn’t think he’d ever do fashion, especially after 15 years in the US between New York and Los Angeles making publicity films for the biggest brands in the States such as Coca Cola, Ford, Camel and Canada Dry to name but a few. He shot more than 600!

Oh Périer! Even when his sister AnneMarie Périer, at the time editor-in-chief of Elle, called up in 1990 asking him to work with her, Jean-Marie Périer thought he was perhaps “a little too rock and roll and not couture enough!” he confesses with a smile. He did, however, jump at the chance. And what a coincidence! After a 30-year gap, he

rejoined the Filipacchi group for whom he had been the photographer in the Sixties. Salut Les Copains, that legendary French music magazine, that was him! He was the portrait artist for all the popsters and a good friend of all the artists in Swinging London. Françoise Hardy, Marianne Faithfull, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones – he was “buddy buddy” with all the big names in showbiz. So the 1990s was, for him, a comeback, with fashion designers replacing singers in front of his inspired camera.

A ticket to Fashion Galaxy! The Fashion Galaxy exhibition presents some 40 photos from the “In the Universe of

Designers” series that Périer shot for Elle in the early 1990s. The majority of it is taken up by fashion designers and dressmakers (Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, John Galliano and Valentino etc.) as well as new muses and super models such as Carla, Naomi and Karen who influenced whole generations! Here Périer rediscovers the creative freedom he enjoyed and the fantasy world he inhabited in the Sixties. He has fun creating surprising set-ups and breaking the rule book to come up with a refreshing and unusual result. The photos are beautiful and often touching. “The rock stars of yesteryear were now family guys and dress designers had taken over,” he explains.

“They had the same fantasy, the talent and the means to invent their lives. No-one lived like Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld or Jean Paul Gaultier.” And he is right; in the 1990s the new global stars did, in fact, come from fashion. People like Versace, Mugler and Galliano filled a gap. And that success has never faded. Fashion Galaxy is within reach and, as you’ll see, it’s a lovely journey and not nearly as vintage as you might think!

Loving elegance

by Lyubov

Paris

Launched by Viktoria Bagryantseva, Lyubov Paris invites love into the heart of fashion by creating clothing that is rock, elegant and on trend all at once. We take a look at a decidedly original label that is perfect for the busy woman who knows what she wants. By Quitterie Pasquesoone

Lyubov, Russian for love Viktoria Bagryantseva is of Russian origin, so it was only natural that she sought inspiration from her cultural roots when she launched Lyubov Paris in 2006. After all, Lyubov means Love in her mother tongue. Viktoria grew up in an artistic family and, as a young child, she was already making her own jewellery before turning her sights on fashion. After school, she began studying finance but this only served to convince her where her true path lay and she soon switched to the prestigious École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris. She started her career with Roberto Cavalli but already knew she wanted to set up her own label. In 2009, she opened her own store, Lyubov, on Rue Cambon in the French capital. This would be followed in early 2013 by two flagship stores in the heart of Paris; at 281 and 346 Rue Saint-Honoré they neighboured the finest fashion labels. The concept was entirely the designer’s own. 90

fashion

The label’s philosophy? Is to invite love into its heart and its designs. Love is a feeling that is both contradictory and complex. It is fragile and unsteady yet, at the same time, audacious, strong and powerful. This contradiction is at the very foundation of life and inspires Viktoria every day as she dreams up new designs. She takes the finest fabrics, gives them an architectural cut and adds precious details.

Viktoria works leather in a couture style, her “Red Carpet” cocktail dresses and evening gowns are like no other designer’s.

A Parisian label What makes Lyubov Paris so special?

Is that its entire production is based in Paris. So each item of clothing is designed and made by renowned artisans, producing a oneoff piece of exceptional quality. The result is that the label attracts active and demanding clients from France and around the world, all drawn to these chic designs that take a masculine look and give it a subtle twist. Viktoria’s fans include many celebrities from the world of cinema, theatre and the music hall such as Emmanuelle Béart, Vanessa Paradis, Mélanie Thierry, Mélanie Doutey and Kristina Orbakaite. Vhernier

celebrates the 20th birthday of its CallA collection If you like beautiful jewellery then you will doubtless love the matchless pieces Vhernier has to offer. Indeed the Italian company has proved so successful, this year it celebrates the 20th birthday of its famous Calla collection. By Caroline Garros An iconic collection Founded in 1984 in Italy’s Piedmont region, Vhernier designs characterful jewellery that is both contemporary and luxurious. The Calla collection was born out of a wish to offer models that had a strong identity and that the brand could play with as much as it liked. Crafted out of fine metals and precious stones and woods, it is this unusual combination that makes the collection so original, subtle and modern. After the splendid Calla necklace was

greeted with great enthusiasm, the collection was expanded to include earrings and bracelets. In fact Vhernier often reworks the striking designs of this collection, expanding the range as part of its constant quest for renewal.

Ebony as a trademark Ebony, diamonds, pink gold and white gold; Vhernier has fun playing around with colours, materials and shapes to come up with models that are at once surprising, inspiring

and timeless. The Calla collection very much owes its success to ebony, a precious and smooth wood. Its enchanting blackness is what makes these pieces so special. Calla models also come in other materials such as kogolong. This white volcanic stone is also used in other pieces, adding a delightful touch of purity and freshness to the collection. A never-ending story, this timeless collection will continue to appeal to jewellery lovers for many, many years yet.

Jewellery that celebrates woman Christina Rasmussen loves precious stones and pearls and always has done. Even as a child she was passionate about jewellery and her aim as a designer has always been to offer her clients pieces that celebrate woman in all her beauty and sensuousness. “My goal through my jewellery is to pay homage to the sensuality of woman. I want to design pieces that render women even more sensual, beautiful and special,” she explains. “The jewellery also needs to adapt to the emotions of the wearer; they are like a mirror to your soul and your emotional status.”

ous and rare. The same has to be the case for the jewels I design; the person wearing any one piece of jewellery must be the only person wearing it!” Emphasising your personality and asserting it makes the wearer even more attractive and special – this is the power that lies in Christina Rasmussen jewellery. By wearing one of her creations you are also guaranteed not to bump into anyone wearing the same jewellery as you. Priceless, wouldn’t you say?

Unique pieces for unique women For Christina Rasmussen, making women even more beautiful is essential. For this artist, each piece of jewellery is a delicate and sensual way of paying homage to women, but that’s not all. “Each piece of jewellery I design is unique – there is only one of its kind in the word,” she enthuses. “Through it, I also want each piece to express the humour and personality of each wearer to the full. You know, no-one wants to be the same as someone else, even if that person is beautiful. Don’t you agree? Every woman wants to be unique, mysteriFOR MORE INFORMATION: WWW.CHRISTINA-RASMUSSEN.COM 95

THE BLACK

ALCHEMY

Precious and inspiring jewellery If you haven’t heard of The Black Alchemy yet, it’s high time you paid a visit to Lyon’s up and coming jewellery boutique. There, you will find Chrystelle’s and Sacha’s unique works of art - a world not to be missed. By Quitterie Pasquesoone The work of a passionate designer Professionally trained sculptor and painter, Chrystelle evolved her artistic direction and became consumed by creating jewellery. Using techniques from her previous art mediums, she fabricates all her pieces by hand. First sculpting a model out of wax, she makes a mold of which she reproduces into replicas. Her pieces are then meticulously finished by her team of artisan jewellers.

Of the finest quality Using gold, silver or vermeil, and precious and semi-precious stones, The Black Alchemy sources only the highest quality materials to ensure the durability of their jewellery. Even more, the whole creation process is completely local.

From the foundry to the diamond cutter, all staff members are based out of Lyon.

Captivating creations Inspired by the four elements of the alchemists, earth, water, air and fire, Chrystelle has dreamed up two main collections - Nymphéas drawing on the paintings of Claude Monet and Mûres Sauvages which reflect the intricate designs of nature. Then there is the special “Peonies ring”, a recent collaboration with the internationally renowned tattoo artist, Sasha Masiuk. To further instill a personal touch for each wearer, The Black Alchemy offers the option of creating and customising your pieces, with engravings or the usage of different metals and stones.

By Caroline Garros Horology as a heritage Gifted designer David Candaux was born in the heart of the Joux Valley, the cradle of fine watchmaking for more than two centuries now. He grew up in a family of watchmakers who were determined to pass on their love of the trade with all its traditions and values. So David continued the family tradition, hoping to be a worthy successor to the major 20th century watchmakers of the Joux Valley. Always striving for excellence, he lets his inspiration talk to him and develops bold, breakthrough models whose technical mastery and elegant style flirt with perfection.

surprising and forceful – at the cutting edge of stylishness, on-trend and packed with technique. David leaves nothing to chance and thinks through each model like a work of art, coming up with perfectly harmonious, unexpected designs. One of the brand’s signature models, the 1740 Half Hunter, brilliantly reworks the iconic, Half Hunter pocket watch. It is a wonderful homage to the trade and was named 1740 in memory of the year horologists were first noted in the Joux Valley. And going that extra mile, David Candaux is there for any clients wanting to customise their models, ready to adapt a model to incorporate their wishes and desires.

With their blend of the classic and the contemporary, David Candaux models are timeless,

By Caroline Garros A talented watchmaker Tucked away in the heart of the historic Saint Gervais district in Geneva, Yvan Monnet set himself up in a watchmaking studio, one of those classic workshops you find under the eaves. It was in light-filled spaces such as this that craftsmen first set up the Geneva watchmaking industry. After gaining more than 20 years experience with the most prestigious watch manufacturers in Geneva, Yvan set up YvM² to design and create inspiring timepieces which are both detailed and original. Yvan Monnet makes a point of surrounding himself with only the finest local craftsmen in order to create unique pieces, limited editions and watches with artistic additions like enamelling, marquetry, gem setting or engraving. The pieces he designs are really unusual, challenging and seductive.

craftsmen, in collaboration with the finest watch brands. And as a follow-up to the success of this model, the brand is currently working on the launch of the Mina 42 mm model, which should see the light of day very soon.

The art of personalisation Yvan Monnet oversees every tiny detail and offers the option of personalising your Mina watch with gem settings, the use of precious materials and other decorative techniques. He can also create personalised designs on lacquered dials thanks to a unique tone-on-tone decorative technique. He can also produce tailor-made models with madeto-order decorative designs and horological complications.

A Signature Collection To offer something above and beyond the more classic watch designs, Yvan MonneT came up with Mina 35 mm, a timeless flagship collection whose watches have an unusual five-sided, pentagon-shaped bezel. Beaubleu, the audacious Beaubleu is a watchmakers dotted with references that ring out, from Baudelaire to the works of Galileo. From these are born limited editions fired by the daring of two experts: Nicolas Pham, a specialist in horology and automobile design who trained with the major names of the Place Vendôme, and Emmanuel Georgy who gained invaluable experience in the United States as a strategy consultant to leading brands. The sobriety of Beaubleu overwhelms you with the poetry of its designs which never fail to arouse curiosity. By Apolline Chaize

A new perception of time The new collection is limited to 125 numbered pieces per model. Each of these high-end models surprises you with a signature that is Beaubleu’s own: circular hands. This changing graphic draws your attention as you explore a new perception of time. So each second become a moment of surprise.

The Survolté The flagship model of the Beaubleu limited collection is the Survolté, or supercharged. It plays with contrasts with its black, sandblasted stainless steel case and its polished pink gold horns. The circling around the case gives the watch the look of a piece of jewellery. This watchmaking expressive-

ness plays with materials and colours to give more creativity in the appreciation of the shapes. The unique construction of the cylinder incorporates an automatic movement developed in Japan.

Enjoy the made-to-measure experience Beaubleu treats all of its clients to an incredible, made-to-measure experience. It enables you to choose the series number of your model and to have your initials engraved on the strap. You can follow the personalisation of your watch step-by-step by being sent a letter and photos. For these experts, high-end design is based on this feeling of proximity that is at the heart of exclusivity.

The exceptional Cap Eden Roc

158

Immortalised in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night, the Cap-Eden-Roc hotel remains the quintessence of French luxury. Nestled in grounds of nine hectares, it combines the chic of a private residence with outstanding service, orchestrated by a highly professional and extremely pleasant staff. From Sharon Stone to Angelina Jolie via Marlene Dietrich, this sumptuous establishment would delight a Hollywood location scout! But while this little Paradise on the Cap d’Antibes is a favourite address for stars during the Cannes Film Festival, it is none the less popular the rest of the year when its elegant clientele is the very image of the hotel: refined and discreet. A luxurious refuge, part of the Oetker Collection where perfection is on display every day. By Laure Delvigo

travel

The Legend Built in 1870 under the name Villa Soleil, the CapEden-Roc is redolent of the hotel tradition inherited from the first bathing resorts under Napoleon. Inaugurated in 1987, it offers sea-loving residents direct access to the Mediterranean. From the Aga Khan to Catherine Zeta-Jones, the list of celebrities who have stayed at Eden Roc could almost turn Cannes’ Croisette green with envy! In fact, each year as the Film Festival approaches, Cap-Eden-Roc is besieged with requests from producers to let their stars stay there. Because for Sharon Stone, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood, the great get-together on the Riviera would not be the same without a stay at Cap Eden Roc.

moor discreetly! Mobile phones are banned at breakfast – and that too is a sign of elegance, of a way of being, a courtesy towards others that is a reminder of French high society of yesteryear with its French Riviera customs. Here you come across writers and philosophers such

filmed on the jetty for a few years ago. Who can help but slip into a reverie beside the legendary swimming pool carved into the rock or when strolling through the nine hectares of ground where you feel you are walking through a 3D Cézanne painting?

The good and the great There are two restaurants between the sea and the sky: the Eden Roc and the Grill Eden Roc, both renowned for fresh and tasty dishes. The fine-dining Eden Roc restaurant, which overlooks the Mediterranean and the Lerin Islands, offers a refined atmosphere with unmissable culinary creations such as EdenRoc-style wild sea bass with basil and fennel. Wonderfully presented, this aromatic marvel explodes in the mouth!

An affordable luxury refuge While the Cap-Eden-Roc hotel may find itself in the spotlight during the film festival, it is still accessible to all. In fact, you do not need to be a millionaire to enjoy a little pampering at the Wellness Centre or lunch at the Grill (à la carte dishes from 33 euros) with a stunning view out to sea. For a few dollars more, the star of Antibes is the difference between an upmarket hotel and a veritable palace. Magic moments snatched during a frenetic life. An haute couture setting As soon as you step through Cap-Eden-Roc’s majestic, cast iron doors you are in a waking dream. Besides the spectacular amfAR soirées where anyone who is anyone in Hollywood can be found, there was Chanel’s Cruise collection shown and the Dior clip with Jude Law

The magic of this special hotel is even greater inside. The rooms are spacious with rare tapestries on the walls and marble on the floor. Embroidery is by hand and the panelling in the lifts is mahogany. And then there are the 18th century and Empire antiques collected by owner Madame Oetker. The hotel has remained top of the league since it opened by always striving to be exceptional rather than settling for just beautiful. The hotel’s other treasure is its collection of

You can also enjoy this in one of the legendary Eden Roc “cabanas” by the Mediterranean. After an hour of absolute magic you come away light of heart and free of stress and all your tensions will have disappeared. A paradise for high society and so many more, the CapEden-Roc is to the art of living what the “Kelly” is to fashion: eternal!

Maura

Wasescha the spirit of excellence

Maura Wasescha is not just a name: it’s a story. The story of a woman from Italy, who by way of encounters, created the path of her dreams. Her greatest ambition is to contribute to yours. By Apolline Chaize.

superior property

An atypical career “I lived in Italy until I was 19.” When she arrived in Switzerland with her baccalaureate, Maura Wasescha worked as a chambermaid. Her employer, the director of a company that lets flats and villas around the world, saw that she had great potential. This is how he “gave me a chance,” confides Maura. “After only two years, I was appointed bureau chief at SaintMoritz”. She had more than 78 employees under her orders. Incontestably inspired by her own experience, in 1998 this talented multilingual woman founded her own eponymous company for the rental and sale of luxury houses and flats.

Excellence, confidentiality and precision: three fundamental ideas for 40 years of success 2018 signals the 40th anniversary of Maura Wasescha’s company. Forty years of tailored, made-to-measure services that respect three fundamental values: confidentiality, precision and excellence. Maura Wasescha is attached above all to the complete confidentiality she owes to her clients. Many of them are busy politicians, actors, musicians, bankers and businessmen who appreciate this relationship of

trust with Maura. Precision, she defines by the seriousness with which she commits herself to each request from her clients. Excellence, she expresses every day to give the maximum to everyone.

Exception: the only belief When Maura Wasescha is asked her definition of luxury, she replies: “There can be no comparison possible.” In this way she gives you access to what is absolutely unique. Rarity is there to entrance you with its “unusual” character expressed through décor, atmosphere, materials, etc. To unearth a superior property and allow herself to be surprised, Maura takes the time to personally visit some 20 opportunities, making a selection that matches your specifications as closely as possible, in order to propose what will be your ideal “home” tomorrow.

Luxurious services The relationship with each client is a privileged and unique one. Maura explains: “I interview the client, discuss all the services that are desired; whether it be limousine service, a reservation in a restaurant that is already fully booked, plan-

ning a ski outing for the children, providing champagne, etc.” Clients have access 24 hours a day to this personalised concierge service. Fully aware of their singular pace of life, Maura Wasescha takes charge of arranging the comfort and ease her clients seek, so that each moment of their stay is magical and free from the stress of daily preoccupations.

Beyond time Maura Wasescha does not count her time in order to ensure the quality of all the services she provides. “I travel 50,000 miles per year not counting plane and train trips!” This means availability seven days per week. The complete and sincere investment of a woman who has chosen to propose the villas and flats all over the globe that are best adapted to your requirements, dixit the spirited Italian. This energy is also devoted

to Swiss and foreign investors who call on her agency to supervise the sale of their prestigious properties. A mother of four, she considers this pace to be a “veritable life choice”. To offer the best of her potential, Maura marks a Zen pause while listening to relaxing music and “practicing meditation”. These techniques enable her to keep her feet on the ground and are a reflection of her thoughtful and confident approach.

A faultless determination “Non mollare mai”. “Never give up”. Maura Wasescha’s deep determination is to realise her dreams and never quit despite life’s trials. This drive is a hand offered to all her clients to make their dreams come true, no matter how extraordinary.

Castello del Sole outstanding luxury in the heart of nature Newly renovated, with a beach and restaurant directly on the shores of the Lago Maggiore, the Castello del Sole has everything to offer discerning guests while the children are kept busy at the Ragazzi club! Along with its three restaurants, state-of-the-art spa and beauty oasis, this multi award-winning hotel offers an extensive sports and leisure programme. By Venetia Bell

astello del Sole dates back to 1532 when it served as a refuge for the early Protestants fleeing persecution. Centuries later, this tastefully decorated 5-star establishment set in a 250-acre park belongs both to the “Relais & Chateaux” and “Swiss Deluxe Hotels” chains and has become another type of haven for its discerning guests, providing a welcome break from their busy, often harried lifestyle. Its quaint inner courtyards and distinctive Mediterranean Ticino architecture fully deserve the term of “architectural treasure”, as it was described in 1756. In a landscape that has hardly changed in centuries, it offers magnificent views of an untouched lake, mountains and vineyards in the surrounding countryside. Luxuriant nature 164

is ever-present in this privileged setting. Indeed, the hotel’s 1,000 feet-long private beach adjoins the WWF bird sanctuary and many of the ingredients served in the restaurants come from Terreni alla Maggia, the 150-hectare farm operated by the hotel’s owners. Michelin-starred, Hanseatic executive chef Mattias Roock holds sway over the hotel’s three restaurants. His signature is felt most clearly in the gourmet restaurant “Locanda Barbarossa”. A convinced and convincing proponent of “farm to table”, Mattias Roock’s maestria can be tasted in his gourmet menu “Sapori del nostro orto” (“flavours of our vegetable garden” in English), for which he uses only seasonal products from Ticino, the Terreni alla

Maggia and the local hotel garden, depending on the season: potatoes, asparagus, tomatoes, courgettes, fresh herbs, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, etc… At the “Cortile Leone”, enthusiasts can also taste his Mediterranean cuisine over a light lunch or a romantic dinner with a choice of over 450 wines, including local ones, carefully selected by the sommelier Massimo Rodella. Daniele Sardella presides over the “Tre Stagioni” where guests may choose from an à la carte menu in the evenings and in the morning from a varied breakfast buffet in the restaurant or on the terrace. The “Parco Saleggi” tastes of summer with its antipasti and salad buffet, meat and fish grills, a choice of pizzas and pastas and an ever-tempting dessert buffet.

“Spiaggia” is Italian for beach and inevitably evokes sun, sea and sand. La Spiaggia’s fare tastes every bit as delectable as that! This modern and uncomplicated restaurant is located on the hotel’s private beach and lays out a spread of casual finger foods and other tempting dishes for a quick lunch or snack. These include salads, burgers, tartes flambées, fish and chips, fruit and other delicacies. Castello del Sole also features three superb lounges and a bar, the “Bassa Selim” where cocktails and local wines can be sampled to the accompaniment of soft piano music. The spacious, individually decorated rooms and suites all share the same understated, tasteful luxury and provide the utmost in comfort. 41 junior

ments offered by this sumptuous wellness centre. Treatments have also been elaborated using local ingredients, including VinoAqua therapy®, which extracts the antioxidants from the grapes of the Terreni alla Maggia and includes them in a beauty ritual.

While the younger guests enjoy the Piccolo Circo with Aline del Torre, there is no lack of activities to occupy the older generation who are looking for more than some well-deserved farniente. The choice includes lake tours on the hotel’s own Frauscher boat, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, one of the most beautiful golf courses in Europe close by, biking and pilates. The ideal destination for guests seeking relaxation as well as spa enthusiasts with the highest standards is the spa & beauty area that includes a whirlpool, two saunas, a yoga room and a coiffeur. From active training in the gym and fitness area, swimming in the heated 80-foot indoor/outdoor pool to deep relaxation in the beauty oasis – the facilities spanning 26,000 sq ft offer every opportunity for guests to keep in shape or get back into it.

Castello del Sole forms part of “The Living Circle”, initiated in April 2017 and consisting of two farms, two restaurants and two hotels. The Storchen Zurich, the Schlattgut and the Buech restaurant in Herrliberg and the Castello del Sole, the Rustico del Sole and the Terreni alla Maggia in Ascona are all participants. These operations have been privately owned by the Swiss Anda and Franz-Bührle families for decades. Whether in the heart of Zurich, directly on the Limmat river, or embedded in a private park on the Lago Maggiore or on one of the adjoining hills with their breathtaking views – all the partner operations of “The Living Circle” are strongly tied to nature and offer their guests an incomparable experience. Every visit to a partner operation of The Living Circle constitutes a very special and unforgettable moment. This initiative is proof that regional unity as well as the simplicity and authenticity of nature can be celebrated as the true luxury of today.

Exclusive facial and physical care, massage treatments, hot stone therapies and body peels carefully selected for each skin type are just some of the treat-

ith three main themes, “The Chef’s Signatures”, “Sea Promenade”, Season’s Choice”, the gastronome savours the most generous and delicate gifts of Provence. There is no imposed menu or unreadable à la carte to provoke embarrassed smiles. In his search for emotion the chef follows his instincts and his taste buds. The appetizer sets the tone: sight, texture, taste, the score is impeccably played and resoundingly announces a master’s touch. Thanks to exceptional “90 % local” produce, the winner of the Best Worker in France prize in 2004, crowned with two stars in the Michelin Guide in 2010, three in 2018,

whose restaurant joined the prestigious Grandes Tables du Monde in 2011, Christophe Bacquié enhances Oreo dory, crab, red mullet, langoustine, veal, pigeon, etc. as well as fruit and vegetables that do honour to Provence’s terroir (asparagus, courgette flowers, strawberries, etc.). Some of his dishes are signatures, mastered after many years of research and tests, like an astonishing line hake prepared with foamy butter on a bed of fingerling potatoes, basted with brown poultry juices and flavoured with truffles, or a delicate Oreo dory, crab and caviar trio, enhanced

Christophe Bacquié’s cuisine is an author’s cuisine. The kind that does not bother with the superfluous. Located just around the corner from the very lively Abbesses district in the French capital, the oyster bar was designed by the famous Forall agency which also did the flagship store for perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. Having spent many years at his cousin’s oyster parks in Normandy, for seafood lover Etienne Ryckeboer this new spot is really about getting back to his roots. The menu includes classic

shellfish such as whelks (“bulots” in French, hence the name which is also a play on words with “boulot” – a slang term for work), award-winning natural oysters, crab, smoked fish platters, grey and pink shrimps, clams, taramasalata and also lobster served in a sinfully yummy lobster roll! Here quality products are served in as natural a way as possible, perhaps with a glass of classic, organic or natural wine, for a delicious breath of sea air in the heart of Paris!

SURFING THE MED AT A CHIC PARISIAN BRASSERIE NOTO A sumptuous cruise-liner has anchored on the first floor of the Salle Pleyel concert hall. With Noto, Laura Gonzales has come up with a breath-taking interior design setting you somewhere midway between Palermo de Visconti and Venice. This is a kind of Harry’s Bar, exploiting to the full the premises’ Art Deco cachet. A deluge of white marble, walnut wood varnished like the deck of a Riva yacht, beaded candelabras, deep pile carpets with arabesque swirls, Byzantine glass lampshades and pewter shelves greet you. As for the menu, you can enjoy divine linguine al dente (exceptional Setaro pasta from Campania), topped with a bisque of shrimps, garlic and tomatoes with a touch of curry, or an octopus carpaccio with roasted peppers, grapefruits and green mint. As for wines, the Passito from the famous actress and wine-grower Carole Bouquet is to die for! 252 bis, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, 75008 Paris Tel.: +33 (0)186 959 660 - noto-paris.com Closed Sundays

MAYFAIR COCKTAILS FROM THE MAESTRO SALVATORE CALABRESE THE DONOVAN BAR The Donavan Bar at Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair has its own entrance on Albemarle Street. Guests and non-guests pass through it to explore the menu of the legendary “cocktail maestro” Salvatore Calabrese, one of the finest barmen in the world. Located in one of the most iconic hotels in London, the Donovan Bar established a reputation as an intimate and sophisticated spot long ago. Its regulars include the biggest names from the Mayfair fashion and arts scene. Live concerts create a special atmosphere which is some-

what reminiscent of the old American speakeasies. In harmony with the hotel’s classic, British architecture, this smart and glamorous bar, designed by the famous interior designer Inge Moore, is home to a 19th century stained glass window of St George and boasts an impressive collection of spirits. Don’t forget to check out the “Naughty Corner”, a more private area with some rather risqué photos by Terence Donavan after whom the bar is named. You could almost think yourself in a Martin Scorsese film!

The Maduzi, Bangkok We’ve always found the Secret Retreats label to be one you can rely on and they’ve struck gold again with the Maduzi in Bangkok. This boutique hotel certainly is a little gem, right in the heart of downtown Bangkok. While with many hotels, the internationally-renowned interior designer leaves an indelible mark, here the style is personal; the profusion of art works and designer pieces reflect the owners’ Thai, Chinese and Iranian roots in a gloriously anarchic way. The Maduzi suite is an impressive 79 m² rooms and includes a super wide king size bed. Although the Maduzi doesn’t have a spa, it will organise massages for you in your room and its breakfast menu, open to non-guests, has proved so popular it’s now served until 2.30 pm! The Continent, Paris It’s four years now since designer Christian Lacroix gave the Hôtel du Continent in Paris a make-over and the couture style he created for it has not aged a bit. Each floor is themed round a different continent, with Lacroix using the finest velvets, ceramics, leathers and chrome and incredible wallpapers and fabrics to evoke “The Old Continent” and “The Poles” as well as Asia, the Americas, Oceania and Africa. The end result is modern yet timeless. This romantic, global tour is ideally located right in the French capital’s 1st district, next door to the Tuileries and offers something for everyone with rooms ranging from a 10 m² single (a rare find in such a smart hotel) to a 31 m² junior suite. Château de Bagnols Hotel and Spa If you fancy something really special then the Château de Bagnols in the heart of the Beaujolais will tick all your boxes. This 800-yearold former fortress is a real treat. Not only are the rooms absolute delights, ranging from the full château experience to a super modern renovation of the old cellars, but the hotel’s restaurant and spa are also stunning. Enjoy the delicious creations of Jean Alexandre Ouaratta in the 1217 restaurant complete with a fireplace you could roast a hog in. Then pop along to the 450 m² Sothys spa with indoor and outdoor pools, gym, and nail bar. Treatments are available to non-residents too and the hotel has just started a loyalty card system for those who use the spa regularly.

Set in the heart of Provence, you can relax on a lounger by the outdoor pool, as you gaze out over rolling hills and the Mediterranean. This is a place to unwind among cypress trees and 12 hectares of grounds. The rooms are light and airy, the spa is a delight and as for the dining… The Restaurant Christophe Bacquié offers the finest in Provencal cuisine. Hôtel de Toiras, Île de Ré France’s Île de Ré is a UNESCO heritage site and the Toiras hotel, in the island’s historical capital, fits right in. This is French splendour in all its glory; from the La Polonaise beds to the great open fireplaces, this 17th century, former shipowner’s home is symbolic of an island reputed as an unostentatious refuge for the political and artistic elite. Despite the no-expense-spared luxury, the hotel has a family home feel. Take the 110 m² George Washington Presidential suite – the sitting room has an open fire. n our digital age, social media ticks the right boxes. Hyper sharp, the cyber-consumer becomes the artistic director and set designer of her or his interior. Homemakers practice decorative exhibitionism. In a click, lifestyles appear in the limelight. Transparency in all its forms sets out delicate objects in display cases or on shelves. Mass narcissism is reflected in mirrors. On the walls, neo-collectors accumulate and place updated picture frames or decorative plates. Still lives are composed and ready to be Instagrammed. Light transfigures space. A hyper-dramatisation of the intimate sphere re-injects a dose of wonder into daily life. We like and share.

Smart leather goods

A different vision of luxury

A 100% Parisian expertise

With its haute-couture bags and its intelligent, modern trunks which combine traditional know-how with the latest technology, Pinel & Pinel offers much more than everyday leather goods. This is as if high-end leather goods sat down for a deep discussion with high-tech. Home-videos, cigar or wine cellars, bars, jewellery boxes and top-of-the-range picnic baskets – the items created by this young Parisian company are as beautiful as they are fun and functional. Pinel & Pinel rewrites the luxury codes with unabashed casualness.

Thought up by Fred Pinel in 1998, Pinel & Pinel is something of a UFO in the very exclusive circle of luxury leather goods. It puts its faith in making bespoke items, entirely by hand while using leathers and skins of great quality, selected from around the world. Here perfection is expected throughout the manufacturing process, from the drawing of the prototype onwards. This is why some models can take up to 1,300 hours to make. It’s a method that is working; a growing number of private individuals as well as the most demanding major brands from around the world place orders with Pinel & Pinel. The client list includes names such as Krug, Tag Heuer, Piaget and Vacheron Constantin.

Pinel & Pinel is French – and, above all, Parisian – know-how in its purest form. And it is in John Galliano’s former HQ, a huge workshop covering more than 1,400 m², that some 30 people are to be found working rigorously at creating these extraordinary items from start to finish. A research laboratory, carpentry, leather-cutting and assembly – it all happens here. One of Pinel & Pinel’s unique selling points is that it is the only French luxury label to make all its products in Paris. A singular label, making one-of-a-kind products.

Daring collections

Michel Simon, the founder of this delightful luxury brand, has always loved travelling and, as a little boy, he dreamed of becoming a malletier or trunk-maker. That was what his grandfather had been, while his father was a cabinet-maker. In the end, Michel combined both skills and now makes sumptuous trunks, often for luxury hotels or yachts but also for business men and women. His company creates shoe trunks, trunks that are ingenious wardrobes and others that open up to reveal a wine collection, and each one is tailored according to the wishes and whims of their future owners. Albatros-Malletier pays meticulous attention to the smallest detail to ensure every one of its products is of

Albatros offers trunks that are both original and yet deliciously vintage in terms of style. These items really grab your attention; for instance, the signature collection, Agatha, (after the legendary writer Agatha Christie) and cork trunks made from recycled champagne corks. The company also offers clients an opportunity to personalise each item of luggage with a logo for example, playing with colours leather and wood. REBELLION

RACING

reveals the details of its return TO LMP1 The REBELLION Racing team will enter two Oreca REBELLION R-13s in the World Endurance Championship with balanced and complementary crews. Both cars will be equipped with a Gibson engine and Michelin tires.

A

fter a 2017 season ending with the title of LMP2 World Champion, the REBELLION Racing team announced last December its big return to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship for the Super Season 2018-2019. Just one year after leaving LMP1, the Swiss team unveiled a quality line-up with the firm intention of shining the REBELLION emblem at the highest level in the world. For a fifth season, REBELLION Racing is putting its faith in the French manufacturer ORECA, by signing them up for construction of a brand new Prototype named REBELLION R-13. The ORECA 07 marked a real technological advance compared to the ORECA 05, the latter having been crowned in WEC and ELMS last season. REBELLION Racing is once again associating its ambitions with ORECA with a common goal of putting REBELLION Racing at the top of the LMP1 category. The driver teams for cars #1 abd #3 will be as follows: • 1 - André Lotterer, Neel Jani, Bruno Senna • 3 - Mathias Beche, Gustavo Menezes, Thomas Laurent. After weeks of interviews with each driver and member of staff, the two teams appeared as the most complementary. Car 1 include two experienced drivers, used to the highest level. Neel Jani and André Lotterer, multiple winner at Le Mans, will be there to welcome Bruno Senna ready to continue his incredible season in LMP2 last year. The second one has a young crew with rising stars such as Thomas Laurent, winner at Le Mans and elected Rookie FIA WEC of 2017 season at the age of 19. This trio has a huge margin of progression that will hold many surprises throughout the Super Season. Solidarity and rigour will be the key words of this new challenge

that awaits the team. The debriefings will be done in common and the drivers will share all the information together. There are not two cars, but only one team: REBELLION Racing. In order to prepare in the best conditions, the Prototypes will be finalised before the start of the WEC Prologue on April 6-7 at the Paul Ricard track in Le Castellet. Calim Bouhadra, Vice President of the REBELLION Group said: “We are proud and happy to continue our collaboration because the historical links that exist between REBELLION Racing and ORECA are strong. The successes achieved together and by ORECA in recent years are undeniable and confirm the confidence we have in them. The project of development of our new LMP1 is reasoned and our close collaboration aspires to aim at ambitious successes.” Hugues de Chaunac, President of the ORECA Group added: “We are very happy to take up this new challenge in collaboration with REBELLION Racing. Alexandre Pesci is a great enthusiast of motorsport and especially endurance, and we share both this passion and the same ambition. Over the last ten years, REBELLION Racing has emerged as one of the major players in the discipline. After the REBELLION R-One, after the ORECA 07 victoriously won in WEC, the team continues to ramp up with this new project in LMP1 and the design of the R-13. Technically as humanly, we look forward to continuing this close relationship built season after season. It is an exciting challenge in the premier category of Endurance racing.” The livery of the new REBELLION R-13 and its technical specifications will be announced at the Geneva International Motor Show on March 6 at a press conference.

High-end products

An invitation to relaxation “A massage is something that happens in the present; it’s about respecting the basic needs for balance and inner peace and enabling the body and mind to escape. It’s about exploring the inner you. The senses are awakened; the right ‘touch’, the pleasure of seeing, listening carefully and then a fragrance, a perfume, awakens the olfactory sense that transports you,” says.” Sylvie Haller. A well-being enthusiast, when giving massages Sylvie always works towards the same goal; to satisfy her clients by offering them moments of complete relaxation. As she is aware that unwinding and letting go is achieved by pleasing the senses, Sylvie has developed ranges of lightly perfumed products, designed specifically for these

L’Esprit Cocon offers exclusive fragrances and each olfactory combination conjures up a journey - “Brume des lacs” (lake mist), “Moment présent” (the present moment), “Inspiration lointaine” (faraway inspiration), “Soleil levant” (rising sun) and “L’aube des sens” (dawn of the senses) among them. L’Esprit Cocon is also very conscientious when it comes to the quality of its products which is why its candles are crafted from 100% plant wax and are guaranteed GMO and pesticide-free. This wax is blended with perfumes from Grasse and essential oils. Craftsmanship comes into play in manufacturing the unique stoneware pieces, often made-to-measure, which showcase the perfumes, turning candles into attractive and personalised ornaments with designer decorations. Beauty that pleases all the senses… These products are of exceptional quality and really help you to let go and drift away.
