Winterlude. A festive nod to this new season in a time of such troubling headlines. Here the snowflakes fall in cascades of diamonds from Paris to St. Moritz, while the trend for red – which represents joy and is a source of vitality – sets winter ablaze. Winterlude is an echo of this fairy tale season, a final treat which intends to stick to the script – i.e. to simply be a pleasure to read and to look at. Here we play with words and perspectives, with trends, legends, faces and landscapes, without forgetting frivolity, lightness, the imagination, dreams, cheekiness and life.

2019 marks a watershed for Blush. Combining glamour, daring and a close connection with our partners, our magazine brings another view of the luxury and people planet with exclusive photo productions, such as our interviews with celebrities from all over the world. With our selective special editions, Blush Editions upsets the established order and injects a new style for exclusive venues and luxury brands. Still today, the history of Blush is written based on the people we meet, as well as by Premium partnerships. After Baselworld and the Cannes Film Festival, we are delighted to join SIHH and the Snow Polo World Cup in St Moritz. I also wish to warmly thank the jewellers, hotelkeepers, watchmakers and other backers who have entrusted us with the production of their magazines: Hotel de Paris-Saint Tropez, Rebellion, L’Hotel du Collectionneur, Clinic Lémanic, Goodwill Private Jets, Maura Wasescha Luxury Properties, Giberg Haute Horlogerie. And although Blush is ever present on the Croisette, we fly off to new destinations with the first issue of Blush - China Edition in a version entirely in Mandarin. See you in Shanghai!

TAG HEUER
TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02 by Fragment Hiroshi Fujiwara
The chronograph has occupied a pole position in the world of motor racing for 55 years, and the collection takes its name from the legendary week-long Carrera Panamericana road race held in Mexico during the 1950s. This original model from 1963 was the very model chosen by Hiroshi Fujiwara as the model to adapt and transform into a Fragmentstyle masterpiece. Three black counters with lacquered white hands adorn the black dial: a minute counter at 3 o’clock, a permanent second subdial at 6 o’clock and an hour counter at 9 o’clock. The shimmering 39-mm stainless-steel case has a special stainless-steel screw-down sapphire caseback, specially engraved with its limited-edition number. A true Hiroshi Fujiwara original – as much a celebration of Japanese design as it is of its own disruptive design pedigree –, the TAG Heuer Carrera Fragment opens a new chapter in the ongoing TAG Heuer Carrera saga. A limited edition of 500 pieces, available exclusively in TAG Heuer boutiques and at www.tagheuer.com
Since 2012, The Maison Piaget continues its annual Chinese New Year tradition with an enamelled limited edition of its iconic watch, the Altiplano. This year, this exceptional timepiece features the Chinese Zodiac in honour of the Year of The Pig. Every year, for centuries, the first day of the lunar calendar is celebrated with families and friends who gather for this particular occasion. The Pig is one of the most likable signs out there. Pigs are honest, forgiving, good-tempered, cheerful and compassionate. The radiant beauty of 78 brilliant-cut diamonds set on the watch’s white gold case frames this precious handcrafted enamel masterpiece, presented with a black alligator leather strap.Through the virtuoso skills of the métiers d’art and their ancestral techniques, so passionately nurtured by Piaget and Anita Porchet, the pig is immortalized in tribute to the generosity and fortune symbolism of Asian culture. www.piaget.com
HUBLOT Big Bang Meca 10 P2P
A trailblazer in new technological and societal trends, Hublot has decided to mark the ten year anniversary of Bitcoin by launching the first watch that can only be purchased using Bitcoin. It will be sold exclusively via e-commerce and can only be ordered and paid for online. Such innovation was made possible through a collaboration with OS Limited (OSL), Asia’s leading digital asset brokerage. This makes Hublot the first big watchmaking brand to enter this sector. The Big Bang Meca-10 P2P is a limited edition of 210 timepieces, a reference to the global limit of Bitcoins, which is fixed at 21 million. Each of the 210 pieces is unique: manufactured for its wearer bearing the identification number of the transaction made via Bitcoin. With this very exciting first, Hublot yet again marks a revolutionary milestone in the watchmaking world and a renewed demonstration of the brand’s three watchwords: being the first, different and unique. www.hublot.com

Acqua di Parma: New BARBIERE Collection
The origins of BARBIERE derive from the regions of Italy by way of this masculine beauty ritual. The passage of time never erases this tradition of elegance, grace and virility. The Romans shaved the barbarians as a rite of civilisation, and this is how their descendants have inherited the sophistication of the man of today. Perpetuating a tradition beginning in Antiquity. Washing, shaving, aftershave and skincare, caressing the face with notes of Colonia, underscored by the best ingredients and botanical treasures. Dawn breaks and the morning ritual may commence.

Caterina Murino, the new Giberg ambassador DIOR - Rose des Vents - A lucky charm trip
Isabelle Adjani, Miss Universe, Ilona Smet, Jade Lagardère to name but a few... Giberg has always been tied to the destiny of exceptional women, sublimating them with style and light. Caterina Murino, The James Bond Girl in Casino Royale, embodies the femininity, elegance and character of the Giberg collections. “Maison Giberg’s expertise really brings out the best in a woman.” Caterina Murino talks of “the interesting soul” revealed in the Giberg collections. An “eclectic soul which leaves a mark on the public” through oneoff pieces. She describes the collections in three words: femininity, elegance and luxury. For Caterina, these pieces from Maison Giberg enhance not only a woman’s outfit but all that she represents. The sculptural elegance of the jewel, embellished with precious materials, adds an undeniably luxurious aspect to a woman’s beauty. As a lover of precious stones, Caterina declares that each of these unique pieces radiates “an extraordinarily positive energy”. www.giberg.com
Chopard – Happy Snowflakes and Happy Stars The moving beauty of nature has always been an infinite source of inspiration for Chopard, in particular when it is cloaked in white. An ode to the magic of winter, a bangle in 18-carat white gold offers eternity to these crystals that have fallen from the skies. At each extremity are little hearts, the Chopard emblem, which form a circle in a gracious pas de deux. The first holds a mobile diamond while the second encloses a delicate snowflake which swirls around itself. Full of fun and freshness, these creations can be worn together or separately to reveal a femininity full of elegance and free-thinking. www.chopard.com
Messika by Gigi
Designed by Dior Joaillerie’s artistic director, the “Rose des Vents”, or “wind rose” is an odyssey swept along by the four winds and the house’s history. Here we find Christian Dior’s lucky charm and the great designer’s favourite flower, the rose, as well as his love of astrology and the divining arts. Rose des Vents is also a metaphor for design, explains Victoire de Castellane. To create is to search, to go round in circles and then find your cardinal bearing and set off on a journey. The design is full of references to static journeys. These jewels accumulate, blend into each other and are superimposed on each other. Everything is a pretext for a talisman. A precious journey in a sky studded with gold, diamonds, mother-of-pearl, malachite, turquoise and pink opal. www.dior.com
Pomellato opens its
Paris flagship store
Pomellato was the first house to introduce a vision of fashion into the conservative world of jewellery. And this eye for fashion is most definitely present in its new Parisian boutique not far from Place Vendôme. As soon as you walk in, you immediately notice the floor in Venetian pink marble, Pomellato’s hallmark colour. Just like the emblematic Milan flagship store, the walls are coated in Montenapoleone red, another hallmark colour, contrasting with the panels in neutral tones and details in bronze. Bathed in light, the ground floor offers a glimpse of the mezzanine where curved seats in sumptuous mauve create a more intimate atmosphere. By adopting the various signature colours of the label, the Paris boutique evokes the unparalleled colours and lines of Pomellato’s iconic collections of precious stones. A new gem to discover at 350 rue Saint Honoré.
Hadid Vanessa Tugendhaft www.pomellato.com
Inspired and inspiring, Gigi Hadid has created a second and completely original collection for Messika: My Soul. In a very sensual bohemian chic universe, these pieces can be worn in layers and are a perfect representation of the current trend towards “stacking” in jewellery. These super-desirable pieces are faithful to Messika’s “Mix & Match” style, carried by the company’s visionary creator, Valérie Messika. In a spirit of a wind of freedom, items such as chokers, bracelets and ankle bracelets, rings and hoop earrings adorn the skin. A world of diamonds and gold that we rediscover in the sunny world of Mert & Marcus. www.messika.com
Just like her concept of a diamond on a thread, renowned for its protective and spiritual properties, Vanessa Tugendhaft offers a daring mix of materials combining the simplicity of the support with the nobility of gold or diamonds. Her designs have been instant hits, and the thread bracelet, named “Identity”, has become one of the label’s leading products. Celebrities such as Madonna, Hilary Swank, Anne Hathaway, Inès de la Fressange and Carla Bruni are fans, as is Meghan Markle, now Duchess of Sussex. She is quite the devotee and regularly wears Vanessa Tugendhaft designs. What to look out for: the Marquise Collection, a tribute to the Venice Mostra, a nod to mysterious and passionate women. A beautiful gift! www.vanessa-tugendhaft.com

Ilona Smet
She comes from a family that needs no longer needs an introduction. Destined for a life less ordinary, it seems that many a fairy must have leaned over the cradle of Ilona Smet and smiled upon her. From her father, the singer David Halliday, she has inherited ice-blue eyes and an elegant reserve. From her mother, top model Estelle Lefébure, the smile of a star and an undefinable grace. On the cover of magazines, as in advertising campaigns, this natural beauty travels the four corners of the globe and yet remains very down to earth – a far cry from the clichés attributed to the children of stars. A close encounter of the top model kind. By Laure Delvigo - Photo Sandra Fourqui
You are the new face of Mixa; what does that mean to you? Obviously I’m very happy and proud to be part of the Mixa family. I was present for photo sessions with my mother when I was little so I’m delighted to be part of them now. Your mother, Estelle Lefébure, was one of the most famous top models, what advice has she given you on your career? As with any other profession, I’ve been taught to be respectful and punctual. I was often at her shoots and catwalks so I think I learned a lot by watching her! What has been your best experience? Each time I travel and discover a new country is a best experience for me. And the worst?! During a photo session I had to lie down in the grass and I
had a massive allergic reaction on my back and legs. We had to stop the shoot for an hour. Who are your fashion icons and why? I only have two left but one of them is Christy Turlington for her elegance, her intelligence and because she fights for many associations including her own, “Every Mother Counts”, which was set up to teach people about ways to prevent pregnancy and childbirth-related complications, mainly in developing countries. Also Cara Delevigne, a model and an actress from my generation who has a strong personality and lots of charisma. For me, she’s a fashion icon of our times. In this age of social media and images that are so touched up, what is your relationship with your body like? I think that, without meaning
to, social networks end up putting too much pressure on the youth of today to look or behave in a certain way. Personally, I like to make sure I feel comfortable with myself, am happy in my life and, above all, I avoid comparing myself with others. You have a figure to die for; do you follow any special diet? No. I’ve put a stop to anything like a drastic diet. I simply pay attention to what I eat and try to do as much sport as possible. I don’t drink or smoke so I think that helps too.
advertising campaign. I also like going up into the mountains to ski, especially around Christmas. Paris or London, and why? I split my time between Paris and London and I love both cities. Paris will always be my hometown, where I grew up while London is super international and there’s so much going on. What is in the pipeline? I have several trips coming up in the next few months so I’m really looking forward to that!
Do you have a special beauty routine before a photo shoot? I let my skin breathe with no make-up as much as possible and then I get a good night’s sleep. You travel a lot; what are your favourite destinations? So far I love South Africa which I recently visited for an 47

amal clooney
High Fashion and Human Rights In such a complicated world, knowing and understanding Amal Clooney is to appreciate where intelligence, compassion and humility collide, and at that point, marvellous, inspiring and life-changing things can be allowed to flourish. We explore the methodical magnificence of this human rights lawyer, whose time in the celebrity spotlight has only strengthened her appeal in front of a global audience. By Simone Lee
A
mal Clooney is in many ways unfortunate. As one of the world’s most respected international human rights lawyers, her role, and what she admires about it, is to fight for the perception of justice… for the man and woman in the street, for the displaced young, the vulnerable and the elderly. Always renowned for her ability to take on the most challenging of cases, and win, she is a passionate supporter of the person with little or no voice. Yet in supporting the plights of so many suppressed and oppressed souls the world over, the lithe and elegant beauty inadvertently has found her own image propelled onto billboards, magazine covers and TV screens. That clearly adds
48
up to a huge juxtaposition for the 40-year-old, yet is a complex situation she knows she must embrace.
it is,” she says, referencing the media glare, “and as long as someone has a voice, that must be good.”
“It doesn’t matter whether it’s dress sense, whether we’re referencing ISIS, the most brutal terror group in the world, or simply acknowledging that every conflict should remind us that there can be no lasting peace without justice, and that a lack of accountability simply leads to continuing cycles of vengeful violence – whatever it is, it’s about human rights, and preserving free choice.
While the fascination of the everyday public is focused primarily on the celebrity elements – quite understandable given that, alongside George Clooney, Amal represents one half of, at times, the most talked about couple in entertainment – the reason this brilliant mind doesn’t, in contrast, give too much away when it comes to her private life is two-fold. Firstly, she doesn’t need to – away from her legal work she might even be described as a recluse, and someone who has been unwittingly thrust into the showbiz spotlight. But secondly, Amal retains an air of mystery
“The reality is I would rather go about doing what I do quietly and efficiently, because the attention must be on those who truly need it. But this is the way
because, in her own mind, the flashbulbs and red carpet ceremonies are irrelevant; if anything bringing a dangerous anonymity to the real business of changing lives and helping those most affected by society’s disparities. Indeed, when praise comes around, and it is frequent, it clearly sits awkwardly, particularly when words such as ‘superhuman’ are bandied about. “My dependencies are just the same as everyone else’s,” she offers. “They are very human! Any praise is nice but we all have a job to do and this is mine. Ultimately, I don’t want the end focus to ever be on anyone other than those who really need it.”

n fact Amal, the Arabic word for hope, has also been quick to point out her own failings. When pregnant with twins Alexander and Ella in 2017, she confessed that turning away her morning espresso was one of the hardest things she has had to do! Yet it is this candid attitude and refreshing, humble honesty that has made her such a hit with other women around the globe – no mean feat for the person who snapped up Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor – as she balances her career with her role as a mother and wife under a glaring spotlight with humility, charm and grace. She is, whether she likes it or not, an impressive role model for women everywhere proving that one can be taken seriously as a professional while still exhibiting a flair for fashion; can enter into a relationship with a high-profile man while maintaining a sense of independence and autonomy, and, most importantly, can persevere with compassion and high values even in the fickle and tumultuous arena of showbusiness. It helps of course that she is inherently beautiful, intelligent and emotionally sensitive, though we only have to look to her upbringing to understand from where her quest for justice is borne… Amal was born in 1978 to Lebanese parents in Beirut her mother Baria is a successful political journalist, while her father, Ramzi, was vice president of the Universal Federation of Travel Agents’ Association, which consults with the UN.
From a very young age the family were often on the move, owing to her father’s work, and were forced to leave Beirut for good once Lebanon’s troubles flared up again, thus relocating to the UK. There, the young Amal thrived. Highly academic, with a vibrant social life and adoration for fashion, she progressed to study law at St. Hugh’s College, Oxford, then attended New York University School of Law. In work, she is noted for having served as a senior advisor to the late Kofi Annan when he was the UN’s Envoy on Syria. She also worked as Counsel to the UN Inquiry on the use of armed drones, and stands as a key member of the UK’s team of experts on preventing sexual violence in conflict zones. Most recently she was appointed to the UK Attorney General’s expert panel. The worst thing – as women and as people – is to forget to stand up for each other. And this is something that we can practise every day, no matter where we are or what we do – because if we are united, there is no limit to what we can do.” She is true to her word – the launch of the Amal Clooney Scholarship for Lebanese Girls in 2015 was a first step towards targeted promotion of human rights and female empowerment. “Tackling these issues feels very natural to me because my mother was definitely my own role model – growing up she was always, to me, a strong, resourceful, positive woman; independent to the point she
needed to be, ambitious, yet loving and balanced. That must be what every woman craves; every person, in fact.” While her dominant work stance stands as tall as ever, in private she approaches life with a little more caution, accepting that there remain several elements beyond her control. Discussing meeting George and falling in love, she said, “It’s the one thing in life that I think is the biggest determinant of happiness, and it’s the thing you have the least control over.” In a sense, Amal’s reclaims some of that control in the way she dresses. Her fashion tastes do portray an idea of being ultimately carefree - from lavish, perhaps overdressed gowns and sweeping dresses, to breezy, even quite girly skirts and poses to match, that reveal an altogether more light-hearted side. “But I’m glad that exists,” she retorts. “I don’t think any of us are ever one person all of the time, and to have the confidence and freedom to allow fashion to represent different moods is surely a right every woman and man should fight to uphold. “The high-profile lifestyle and the media attention is not something I wanted or ever went after, but if the biproduct of that is increased attention on really important and serious projects, then how could I not think that is a good thing.” Indeed, Amal and husband George have proved themselves tremendous joint ambassadors for fairness in the form of their
project the Clooney Foundation for Justice, which fights for the rights of individuals unfairly targeted by oppressive governments. The work is unrelenting, and while George can afford to adjust movie schedules to suit the campaign calendar, Amal’s schedule isn’t quite as flexible. Despite being beautiful, stylish, elegant and as media-friendly as any actress who has frequented the red carpet, the nature of her earnest profession is arguably at odds with the superficial glitz and glamour of Hollywood, and were it not for the fact that the couple have so doggedly persevered with their philanthropic efforts, the pressures of fame may have very well proved too much for the lawyer. “I am fully aware of the additional pressures that come with this. The scrutiny is greater and the best thing I can do is exercise that media attention by continuing to take on this sort of work.” So, the work continues. Amal is currently co-writing a book with Philippa Webb, whom she worked with at The Hague, called The Right to a Fair Trial in International Law; while George’s last directorial effort, Suburbicon, shined a spotlight on racial tensions in 1950s Americana, sparking conversations about how much society has really changed in its attitudes toward race. There is clearly more to come. “There is no end, nor will there ever be, but giving up is not an option.”

Inès de la Fressange a meeting with an icon of French chic
Beautiful Americans envy us for it. Being Parisian is, firstly, a state of mind. It means preferring simplicity because less, it turns out, really is more. An icon of Parisian chic par excellence, top model, face of Chanel and fashion designer, Inès de la Fressange continues to be a source of inspiration for women the world over. We met up with her in her brand new Lyon store, on the Left Bank, where that most elegant of stylists revealed collections combining smart with casual. Because style means being yourself. By Laure Delvigo - Photo © Benoit Peverelli
Your book Parisian Chic has sold more than a million copies; how does that feel? What I liked was to showcase the labels and Parisian stores that weren’t necessarily wellknown. The readers discovered them through the book. I like offering help and advice – in fact it’s what I try to do with each collection by designing items of clothing women really need in their wardrobes. What are the essentials in your dressing room? Oh it’s deadly boring! People are often disappointed; they think I’ve held on to 40 years of fashion but my dressing room isn’t the Victoria and Albert Museum (laughs). On the contrary, over time you learn to have little but make sure it’s good. I mainly wear navy blue jumpers and white jeans – it’s hardly great fun. When you are a stylist, you don’t necessarily dress in an extravagant way, despite what those on the outside might think. You are a model, a designer, an opinion writer and a business woman; how do you manage all that?!
52
Well I don’t manage it at all! I think it’s important to say that. We are not perfect; I’m behind on my emails, I have bills I sometimes forget to pay. But as soon as you accept all that you stop being overcome with stress. My technique is to draw up horizontal lists. I also have a newsletter which I call “Inès’s letter” on Facebook, where I pass on advice that is daft but helpful. You also have to have a relaxed attitude to life and know how to let go of things a little. Delegate; trust those around you. I am very loyal. For example, for my collections, I always call in the same hair stylist and make-up artist. My aim is to do things that interest me with people I meet. I’m pretty happy because it works. What do you think of this age of social networks and Americanstyle intensive sport? This is the modern era and it’s how it works. We aren’t forced to spend six hours a day on Instagram, or to be addicted to social networks. I have been on Instagram for a very long time; it was a group of very avant-garde English people who told me about it without me even under-
standing how it worked. Now, when I have work meetings, whether for Roger Vivier or for Uniqlo, I am aware that social networks will play a part. How do you view the new generation of top models, Gigi, Bella and Kendall etc.? That’s just it; they are celebrities because of social network. They are followed by millions of people. I think it’s great. Lots of girls who follow and admire them would like to be like them. I suppose they carry out charity work. These young women have enormous power because they touch a great many people through social networks. There have always been idols. For me, in the Sixties, it was Sylvie Vartan or Françoise Hardy. There have always been celebrities you admire who also represent a kind of unreal existence. You have a wonderful figure; do you follow any special diet? The Inès diet! I think I should bring out a book on this diet – it’s very simple but very few people would follow it. Eat when you are hungry and stop eating when you aren’t hungry any more. It seems obvious but
in fact it’s not as easy as all that because we’re always tempted. My friends who complain about being two or three kilos overweight also eat when they are stressed; I think you have to separate the two. Instead of turning to the fridge when you are worried, drink a glass of water or try meditation. Eating won’t get rid of your troubles – quite the opposite. Your favourite destinations? India and also Tarascon Your addresses in Paris? I have a thousand! Everyone can find them in my books. The latest is a decoration special Maison, Parisian Chic at Home, put together with Marin Montagut. What are your projects? Always holidays – how to organise myself to have as much holiday time as possible. Last year was a very packed year; I moved. Now I aspire to tranquillity.

Kaiser
Karl! “It’s yellow, it’s ugly it doesn’t go with anything but it could save your life!” Oh yes, he was the first to wear a yellow safety vest with class! That was back in 2008 for a road safety campaign. But who? Why Karl Lagerfeld of course, one of the last great giants of fashion, a workaholic and a genius Jack-of-all-trades! From Balmain to Patou, from Chloé to Chanel via Fendi and his own labels, the Kaiser knows how to do everything and is to be found everywhere. He is, in turn, fashion designer, editor and director, his photos have stunned and seduced since 1987 and now a wonderful new book has been published featuring his best publicity campaigns for Chanel. You go, Coco! By Yvo Deprelle.

T
he recent passing of Hubert de Givenchy left us all feeling sad and perplexed. Of the major haute couture houses launched at the end of the Second World War, sadly few founders remain today. Pierre Cardin and Valentino are still with us… check! But Karl Lagerfeld surpasses them all, as if time has no effect on him and his actual age remains a mystery. Ever young and dashing, he is now bearded and svelte since he fell in love with the Dior suits designed for a more adolescent frame by Hedi Slimane in 2001. A modern dandy, his secret is a healthy lifestyle (that’s just basic!) and Diet Coke, taking an interest in everything, being where it’s at and so setting and breaking trends. You could add to the list a healthy dose of biting humour, a few truculent “karlisms”, two of three caresses from his cat Choupette and a 15-hour working day! Because this workaholic creates more than 12 collections a year himself including ones for Chanel, Fendi and his personal collections. And that’s not counting his countless collaborations of all kinds. From giving the Coke can and the newspaper Libération a makeover to designing a bankable H&M collection in 2004, he is quite ubiquitous. He is channelling Gabrielle Chanel!
Slasher chic. Born around 1935 in Hamburg, the young Karl Lagerfeld worked for a while as a fashion illustrator and then, on November 25, 1954 won first prize (together with a young Yves Saint Laurent) in the International Wool Secretariat’s competition in Paris. Pierre Balmain, a member of the jury, was so impressed with his talent that he employed him as an assistant from 1955 to 1962. Yves Saint Laurent, who would be-
56
come a friend, joined Christian Dior, the competition’s other patron. 1954 was the beginning of a brilliant career! While he was at Balmain, the young Lagerfeld became Artistic Director for Jean Patou in 1959. A short time later, he decided to make a bid for independence and design contractual collections around the world. In 1963, back in Paris, he created collections for the House of Chloé where he would stay for 20 years. In 1965 he joined the House of Fendi in Rome in parallel and he is still its designer today. 1983 would be the second key date in his intense career. The Wertheimer family, owners of the House of Chanel since 1954, had been trying to relaunch the virtually moribund label for a dozen years following the death of the great Mademoiselle in 1971. Given his impressive CV, Karl became the man of the moment. Erudite, talented, addicted to work and with a sharp whit, the dandy became the Artistic Director of the House of Chanel. “I’m a bit of a strange Coco,” he joked!
A beautiful book for his library! Interested in all forms of art, it was almost by chance that Lagerfeld turned to photography. Indeed it was after he was unhappy with the work of three successive photographers during the making of a press pack for Chanel that he decided to pick up the camera and take the photos himself. If you want something done, then do it yourself, as the saying goes! In 1987 he opened a studio with six people with whom he would create all publicity campaigns for Chanel and also for Fendi and even Dior Homme! This wonderful work from publishers La Martinière compiles, for the first time, all the Chanel campaigns from 1987 to the present day – that’s a total of

almost 600 photos, each more stunning than the last. This is really a historical manual of Chanel during the era of the Kaiser! Lagerfeld’s inspirations come from German expressionism from the 1920s, as well as the work of the great fashion photographers of the 1950s such as Irving Penn or the maestros of the 1980s including Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon. More recently, he has been inspired by Steven Klein and Steven Meisel. Preferring black and white, Lagerfeld works with both traditional and digital cameras. His aesthetic style is based on strong contrasts, sculpted light, architecture
and the portrait technique. The choice of dazzling personalities ensures the house is both modern and immortal; Inès, Claudia, Christie, Linda, Kristen … Yes! It is such a delight to find our muses and beloved supermodels from the 1990s in these pages, along with newcomers such as the actor Kirsten Stewart. This work will enchant anyone who loves fashion and photography. And, as Karl put it so well: “The smell of a freshly printed book is the best smell in the world!” CHANEL THE KARL LAGERFELD CAMPAIGNS BY PATRICK MAURIÈS PUBLISHERS: LA MARTINIÈRE, €69 - 544 P. - 190 X 277 MM

Red Dressing
Red has to be the most fascinating and ambiguous colour there is. It plays with paradoxes and arouses intense and completely contradictory feelings: love, anger, sensuality, sexuality, ardour and prohibition… And in that lies its power; it excites passions and works equally as well as a total look or restricted to just a few touches. The luxury of completely Parisian leather goods Pinel & Pinel offers much more than simple leather goods. With its haute couture handbags and smart and modern trunks, a real blend of technology and skill, each design combines tradition and modernity. Pinel & Pinel is also unique in French leather goods in that all its items are put together in Paris, in John Galliano’s former headquarters - a huge workshop in the 20th district. This is where it all happens: each item is created from start to finish by an expert team of more than 30 people. Their training and meticulousness bear all the hallmarks of famed French luxury. From the initial drawing to completion, some trunks can require as much as 1,300 hours of labour. This really is haute couture. The French label loves reinterpreting luxury in its own 66
way, especially by adding a little touch of nonchalance, which is exactly what makes its designs so stylish. The end result is original pieces, entirely hand made, using top quality leathers and hides from around the world.
Winter Style For this Autumn-Winter, Pinel & Pinel has come up with a very specific material, specially designed to warm up its creations during the cold months when you just feel like a little cocooning. They have combined the traditional smooth leather with a twisted wool coating in black or brown. This treatment of the wool, known as “Lenny”, adds a unique and warm finish. It is available on the mini-malle, a leading model for the label, as well as throughout the bag collection. A must-have this season – the perfect way to accessorise all your outfits!

DE MARQUET Reinventing leather ware Created two years ago by Raffaella Iten Metzger, De Marquet designs clever, chic and glamorous bags that have huge appeal. By Caroline Garros
Handbags that adapt to suit you De Marquet’s clever range of multi-functional handbags is perfect for busy women and followers of fashion looking for accessories that are both smart and stylish. The label makes a point of combining trends with a practical aspect by offering goods that can fit in with our busy lives and that can be adapted to suit our needs, like the ethno-chic CosmoPolitan handbag which ingeniously doubles as a practical belt bag. As for the label’s signature Night&Day handbag, it provides a splendidly glamorous touch and you can change covers in just a click to match your outfit or your mood.
Combining design and quality On the design front, these are contemporary items whose super-modern lines are drawn by the designer herself. Raffaella also takes great pride in the high quality of each product. 70
The label works with craftsmen of renowned expertise and each handbag is entirely made by hand in the workshops located in the heart of Tuscany. A designer by trade, Raffaella increasingly works with wellknown artists and likes to think of each model as a real form of expression.
International appeal Present at Milan Fashion Week last September, De Marquet made its début among the biggest names in fashion and leather ware. An event of such a size enabled the label to make itself known on the international stage. Working together with the prestigious DPA Gifting Suite from Los Angeles, De Marquet won over Hollywood stars and now they too are fans of the famous Night&Day collection. Keeping up the momentum, De Marquet is back in the Gifting Suite in early 2019 at the Golden Globes.

French elegance from
Valerian Hughes Does your wardrobe need livening up with a few strong pieces that will give you a self-confident and smart look? Valerian Hughes, an artist at heart and a renowned designer will be delighted to welcome you in his Parisian studio. By Caroline Garros - Photos Xavibes / Guadeloupe La Belle / Miss Guadeloupe
Design of the times Valerian is one of those passionate designers who are always on the lookout for new ideas to satisfy a highly demanding clientèle. Having cut his teeth with Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne, a few years ago Valerian decided to launch his own label to really give free rein to his inexhaustible inspiration and put together collections
that are modern, stunning and exclusive. Nestled in the very heart of Paris, his showroom gives pride of place to chic items that are both contemporary and timeless. Bustier dresses, leather jackets, silk blouses and dainty tops - the label makes high-end clothing whose refined lines have attracted many clients in Paris and around the world.
Made-in-France quality Convinced that the key to quality and style lies in the materials used, Valerian makes a point of only choosing the finest such as leather and silk – most of his collection is made from these. In his studio-boutique, the designer imagines and then brings to life limited series of clothing, all entirely handstitched. Detail is everything to Valerian and he pays metic-
ulous attention to each finish. In order to be able to create pieces that suit his clients down to the ground, Valerian also offers made-to-measure clothes. A PASSION FOR COLOUR Would you like to breathe new life into your leather ware? At Emilie Patine leather is reworked to restore its shine or even change its colour. We turn the spotlight on this little-known art. By Apolline Chaize - Photo © Delamain
Artisanal Art A designer and artist at heart, Emilie Chabanon tried patina work some 13 years ago, starting with the shoes of her friends and family. She soon fell in love with the whole, colourful process and finally decided to set up her own business: Emilie Patine. From the softest, velvety calfskin to python and ostrich and even fish-skin leather, she works with meticulous dexterity, imagination and passion. One of the few women to have carved a place in a very masculine profession, this talented artisan adds a touch of gentleness and femininity that makes all the difference.
Close relationships From her workshop in Place des Ternes in Paris, Emilie is now called upon by the finest bootmakers in the French capital but also delights in working on handbags, shoes, wallets and belts brought in by individual 74
clients. She chats with them over a coffee to find out exactly what they are looking for. It is a special moment in which to build up a trusting relationship that enables Emilie to really understand her clients’ wishes. What she appreciates most is seeing their satisfaction written all over their faces once she has completed the job.
Promising prospects After repeated requests, a few months ago Emilie launched a business range. Entirely made in France, it comprises a vanity case, a satchel and a cabin bag in virgin leather so she can add just the right patina to satisfy the most demanding of business men and women. Emilie is full of ideas for new projects and will soon be offering “ready-to-patina” court shoes. This original idea means the client can pick everything from the type of patina to the height of the heel. And in 2020 Emilie aims to open her own patina
school to pass on her inexhaustible passion to leather ware colleges and others starting out in the business.

The Lémé Paris
A hit bag that’s on the side of women We take a closer look at this ode to modern femininity and a pro-feminine accessory that is bang up to date. By Fiona Esther.A
N
ow aged 27, Natalia Diabira is the result of a rich and colourful cultural tale. Born of a Mauritanian father and French mother, she draws on her unusual multi-ethnic roots for inspiration. In fact, they are a fundamental part of her character traits such as an open-mindedness and a strong desire to fulfil her dreams. And this DNA is revealed in all its splendour in her first fashion collection for women and mums-to-be. It was while thinking about the accessory that is absolutely indispensable to women that Natalia had her lightbulb moment. In a stroke of genius she spotted a niche market that few have bothered to explore: the change bag. Too often classical – albeit practical – and rarely elegant, Natalia decided to dream up a product that would slot perfectly into women’s daily lives. Her aim was to come up with 80
a product that was “smart and fashionable, with or without a child”, something as unashamedly bold and glamorous as Natalia herself. Wanting the bag to be “feminine, original and practical”, Natalia began thinking up models that were the perfect combination of all three. The bags are made out of the finest hides and decorated with exotic leathers, using all the skill and expertise of French manufacturing. The edges are super-smart and the topstitching, painted over three times by hand, makes each model unique. As for the inside, it’s full of surprises for it is here that we find the hidden extras: a removable changing mat and a compartmented box with room for bottles and all those other essentials, luxuriously tucked away. The lémé bag is as individual as every woman, a homage to your hidden beauty, and definitely your friend.

Cuir Marin
de France
Ethical and aesthetic luxury Cuir Marin de France is a brand new business just starting out in Lyon, France. It specialises in eco-friendly high quality leather coming from the sea! It’s quite a challenge but Cuir Marin de France more than pulls it off with its range of vegetable tanned leather in stunning colours. Technique, know-how and shared values at the core of the project The hunt for sustainable and eco-friendly materials has become something of a priority in the labs of chemical and engineering schools. And that’s certainly what brought Benjamin Malatrait, Gauthier Lefebure and Emmanuel Fourault together – that and a desire to promote the growth of eco-materials in the luxury goods market. So they combined their talents as curious and motivated
engineers and began two years of intensive R&D into the subject of marine leathers made from the skins of various types of fish. They worked with the French agro-food industry and restaurants to set up a virtuous supply cycle to transform their first skins into exoticlooking leathers. And they went even further; this young tannery has set up its own, 100% vegetable and chromefree tanning process. A special recipe enables them to obtain inodorous, hypo-allergenic and recyclable leathers.

Quality and style These leathers have huge potential within the luxury goods world. They provide a real and original, supple and strong alternative to cowhide. And they also offer a completely environmentally-friendly alternative to exotic leathers. The grains, textures and colours change depending on the species and the results are always surprising. Thanks to their manufacturing secrets, the tannery has developed dyes that are both perfectly uniform and repeatable.
The unparalleled quality of these unusual leathers has already won over major players in the worlds of luxury goods, watchmaking and leather goods. Backed in particular by the Centre Technique du Cuir and already the recipients of numerous awards for innovation, the trio has no plans to rest on its laurels. In January it will present a particularly inspiring collection of dyes and new leathers!

Special moments for
Carl F. Bucherer in its anniversary year
A number of milestones have made 2018 a very special anniversary year for Carl F. Bucherer and attracted a lot of attention for the brand. One such milestone was when the brand seamlessly linked the digital and analogue worlds in Asia by launching the first exclusive Carl F. Bucherer online boutique with China’s biggest retailer, the JD.com online platform, and opening a new monobrand boutique in Hong Kong shortly after. For the opening ceremony, CEO Sascha Moeri and Global Brand Ambassador and actress Li Bingbing cut the symbolic ribbon to officially open the new store. During his speech at the glamorous gala dinner, CEO Sascha Moeri told the 200 guests present: “The opening of this store is a key milestone in the expansion of our brand in Asia. At the end of 2017, we only had around 100 points of sale. This number will have increased to over 150 physical stores and one online boutique by the end of 2018.” Emily Tang, Jimy Tang, Li Bingbing, famous Chinese Actress and global brand ambassador of Carl F. The Heritage Tourbillon Double Peripheral by Carl F. Bucherer
Limited anniversary edition - the Heritage Tourbillon Double Peripheral - a Tribute to 130 Years of “Made of Lucerne” Watchmaking Heritage The perfect end to Carl F. Bucherer’s anniversary year came in the form of a new limited-edition timepiece that the brand presented together with Tourneau and Hodinkee in New York at the end of October. Speaking at the press conference, Sascha Moeri said: “The Heritage Tourbillon Double Peripheral Limited Edition is the embodiment of 130 years of sophistication at Carl F. Bucherer. We are proud of this exceptional timepiece, which is a tribute to our long tradition and at the same time heralds the arrival of a new
range of products: the Heritage collection.” The first model from the new collection is limited to 88 pieces in a tribute to the year in which the Carl F. Bucherer brand was founded the cosmopolitan and internationally renowned luxury watch manufacturer was established in 1888 in Lucerne, in the heart of Switzerland. The new timepiece reflects the golden luster of the baroque city itself, with an elaborately finished 42.50 mm, 18-karat rose gold case. Its shape and the design of the dial, featuring a sunburst finish and milled rings
decorating its periphery, paired with striking diamond-shaped indices, were inspired by various vintage watch models from the 1960s. Another homage to the birthplace of Carl F. Bucherer is the movement bridge crafted in 18-karat white gold, which features a hand-engraved cityscape of Lucerne. It covers the entire back of the movement, with the exception of the tourbillon. At the heart of the Heritage Tourbillon Double Peripheral Limited Edition is the in-house CFB T3000 caliber, featuring a tourbillon and an automat-
ic winding system that are both mounted peripherally. The tourbillon is regarded as a highlight of the art of watchmaking and, in their latest caliber, the designers and watchmakers at Carl F. Bucherer have succeeded in giving it a floating appearance. The cage of the minute tourbillon is supported peripherally – and invisible to the viewer – by three ball bearings. The Heritage Tourbillon Double Peripheral Limited Edition has a power reserve of 65 hours and is a certified chronometer.
Prestige and renown thanks to partnership with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie
Carl F. Bucherer: Official Partner of the FHH (PPR/Carl F. Bucherer)
The Lucerne watch manufacturer also took the opportunity to announce its partnership with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) to the press and friends of the brand in New York. Carl F. Bucherer had already been given the honour of joining the FHH’s exclusive circle of Perimeter brands thanks to its outstanding achievements and constant
watchmaking innovation. “Now, with our official partnership, we are strengthening this commitment, and look forward to making an important contribution to upholding the traditions of haute horlogerie and the exchange of information in the sector,” said Sascha Moeri.

What if the ultimate definition of luxury is not simply wearing earclips designed just for you, but also having them bespoke tailored to fit each ear? That’s the kind of attention which sets Koenig apart.
K
oenig, that is the founder Ewald König who, after working with the likes of Cartier, decided to open his own boutique in St. Moritz in 1985, and Roger, his son who almost went into law but fortunately for Koenig’s clients, became a goldsmith instead. Together they form a team that has earned a loyal following among the many international visitors of the ski resort. BUT SERIOUSLY….each ear? “ Sometimes one earlobe might be slightly thinner than the other and that makes all the difference”, explains Roger. “ During an evening, women often slip off their earclips and pop them into their clutch. I want women
to wear ours all night and even forget to take them off when they go to bed”. The Koenig boutique in the heart of St. Moritz is a cornucopia of delights – Roger’s designs range from the bold to the bucolic with a dash of Art Deco for good measure. As well as original designs, they also work on bespoke projects for clients. Many pieces have become iconic – such as the late Gianni Agnelli’s famous “over the cuff” watches designed by Ewald. Roger finds his inspiration everywhere. Sometimes the stone inspires the piece, as with the Grão de Café series, sometimes he hunts out the right
gemstones to suit a design he has come up with. Either way, each piece has to be perfect, which is why they are manufactured exclusively in the company’s own workshop; and if your bespoke earclips need a perfect fitting, Koenig will measure your earlobes and tailor your jewellery to perfection. Apart from the company’s second boutique in Zurich there are no plans for a chain of Koenig stores; as Roger explains, what makes the company so special is the individual attention clients receive – exclusivity cannot be franchised. Hublot has designed a unique limited-edition timepiece for the Collège du Léman to celebrate the partnership between the two prestigious establishments. A cutting-edge design in the Collège du Léman colours The Collège du Léman Big Bang is the latest chapter in a partnership that began with watch manufacturer Hublot installing a superb clock in the school’s gymnasium and sponsoring its sports teams. The exclusive timepiece displays Hublot’s core values of precision, outstanding quality and devotion to its craft. Only 20 of these bespoke watches have been made. Each one is engraved and numbered, has a diameter of 44 mm and features a steel case set off by a midnight blue ceramic bezel. The iconic royal blue of the dial was inspired by the serene waters of Lake Geneva.
Beyond the Big Bang But the partnership between Hublot and the Collège du Léman is about more than a stunning design. It is about strategy and expertise. For the Collège du Léman, with its multi-cultural student population, it is vital that its partners set an example. Pupils can learn a huge amount about strategy, values and ethics from watchmakers Hublot (LVMH Group) - and the brand’s inspirational high-profile Ambassadors, which include Usain Bolt, Lang Lang, Chelsea FC and Ferrari, help cement the connection.
Collège du Léman Head “honoured” For Thomas Schädler, the Director General of the Collège du Léman, the partnership with Hublot has a lot to offer: “Hublot has been the school’s Official Timekeeper for over a year now. We’re honoured to be associated with a firm we have so much in common with. With this initiative, we’re not seeking to emphasize the aura of luxury often promoted by the watch industry, but Hublot’s DNA as an innovative brand with a strong sports presence. We will be extending the partnership with a series of events over the course of the year.”

BASELWORLD
More bookings than last year Managing Director Michel Loris-Melikoff offers a preview of innovations at Baselworld 2019.
Baselworld: Mr Loris-Melikoff, you are quite new as the head of Baselworld. Are the concepts for Baselworld 2019 equally new and fresh? I certainly hope so! The feedback that my team and I have received from the industry about our ideas for the coming year has been very positive and bookings are likewise developing better than last year.
can also be used for events in the evenings. “The Loop” will offer several new catering options directly in hall 1.1. The independent watchmakers of “Les Ateliers” likewise get a new stage: they can now be found in Hall 1.0 South. We are also developing events for dealers. And Baselworld will open for journalists one day prior to its official opening… The objective is to strengthen the fair’s event, communication and marketing character. Baselworld must be a unique experience that’s newly surprising and different each year. We still have some time ahead of us before Baselworld 2019, so several additional concepts will also be added. We’ll provide more details about them in the coming weeks and months.
Baselworld: What specific items will be new at Baselworld 2019? Plenty! An important goal is to strengthen the jewellery area. That’s why it will be much more centrally positioned in Hall 1.2, where it will also have a genuine visitor magnet: a Show Plaza with a spectacular 240° catwalk. There will be three live shows per day on the catwalk, which
Baselworld: How are these concepts developed? In close coordination with our exhibitors. Three or four visits with customers each day are not unusual at the moment. I want the people to get to know me as a person and I want to get to know them personally too. Moreover, there are committees and events for exhibitors
92
in Germany, France and Italy, where we present and candidly discuss our concepts – as peers and equal partners. We listen very carefully to learn exactly what exhibitors and dealers desire, what would be good, what they felt was missing and, of course, we also have our own ideas and we want to try things out. What’s very important for me is: we want to design Baselworld not only for the global watch and jewellery industry, but also and above all with the industry. And here I mean the whole industry, not just the luxury sector. Baselworld: How are you responding to the digitization of the markets? Today’s market needs a totally different Baselworld than it needed ten years ago. Some companies nowadays “tick” almost exclusively digitally. The topic of digitization is accordingly at the top of our list. Among other things, we are also developing a new communications strategy that works with innovative formats such as digital chatbots to provide the brands with a year-round stage for their products. But digitization will
and must take place and show itself in many other areas as well. We are in the process of developing new ideas here too. Baselworld: Catering, overnight stays, stand fees, admission prices: these have long been a bone of contention for many people. That’s true. Expenses crossed the pain threshold for many people in past years. That’s why we intend to sit down at a table with all participants and find a satisfactory solution. Our negotiations with hoteliers and restaurateurs make it clear that this will succeed. With regard to stand rentals, we have already modified the fees in past years and we’ll continue to modify them selectively in 2019 to reduce expenses for our exhibitors. We’ll likewise rethink the admission prices and adjust them downward, if possible.

“A custom jewel makes a woman’s beauty truly complete.” Andreas Gmur
A custom jewel
that fulfils your dreams, wishes and desires What if a jewel was more than just a beautiful object? What if it could sum up your personality? Andreas Gmur shuns serial production, working with each client to co-create superb one-of-a-kind custom jewels. By Caroline Garros
A passion rooted in family tradition Andreas Gmur inherits his love of precious stones and jewels, his perfectionism and his instinctive grasp of the difference a minute adjustment will make from his grandfather, a diamond cutter and master jeweler. Even as a young child, Andreas had an eye for beauty. He was fascinated with art and architecture and loved painting. His career initially took him in another direction: he worked in industry and marketing, before becoming a consultant. Then, in his early forties, he decided to retrain 94
at Paris’ famous Haute École de Bijouterie Joaillerie, from which he graduated brilliantly. Now he had the skills and qualifications to carry on the family tradition. After working as a subcontractor for some of the best-known names in the business, Andreas launched his own brand, Jewelry Andreas Gmur, combining exclusive high-end jewel-making with a bold new concept.
A unique co-creative approach JAG offer clients custom jewels that fulfil their dreams, wishes and conscious or unconscious desires. Andreas Gmur believes that having a jewel made should
be a totally unique experience, so he has devised a co-creative approach, working directly with clients and involving them at every stage of the process to design jewels that crystallize their life-story and sum up their personality - jewels that will accompany them on their journey through life. When you arrive, you are ushered into a quiet studio, secluded from the hurly-burly of everyday life. Here, the jeweler’s craft is sublimated into art. Over many conversations, a draft design of the jewel gradually emerges as Andreas translates your ideas into sketches. Nothing is left to chance: every minute detail is discussed.
Then, standing at his easel, he paints an artist’s impression of what the finished jewel will look like, while you watch. Finally, the artist turns craftsman and brings to life the stunning jewel you have designed - a signature piece that expresses your innermost thoughts and reminds you of significant moments in your life.

Chronographs for our times Singer Reimagined’s contemporary chronographs combine eye-catching design with revolutionary engineering. They are a must for anyone who loves beautiful machines. By Caroline Garros
Enthusiasm and expertise The idea for Singer Reimagined was born when Rob Dickinson, the founder of Singer Vehicle Design, met well-known watch designer Marco Borraccino. After bonding over their shared passion for cars, watches and design, they set themselves the challenge of reinventing haute horlogerie. They knew that to create truly extraordinary timepieces, they would need to break with conventions and give a free rein to their imaginations. As well as bold thinking, it would take dedication and hard work. When famous Swiss watchmaker Jean Marc Wiederrecht came on board, the project started to become a reality. Today, a hand-picked team of specialists selected for their 96
commitment, exacting standards and meticulous attention to detail are devoting themselves to making these fabulous watches, developing models that look terrific and are superbly functional and intuitive to use.
Award-winning design Singer Reimagined’s contemporary chronographs are marvels of technology that break with tradition and have brought a breath of fresh air to the watchmaking industry. Inspired by the finest chronographs of the 1960s and 1970s, the designs give pride of place to the stopwatch function and are powered by a radically new movement that took the brand’s partner Agenhor a decade to develop. All the chronograph
functions are located in the central part of the dial, while the time of day is displayed just inside the rim, with the aid of two rotating discs. Equal attention is paid to detail with the watchstrap: each strap is made to measure in the customer’s choice of materials and detailing, to make sure customers are delighted with absolutely every aspect of their watch. The stunning visual design and technical excellence of these chronographs have met with acclaim from the horological industry. The sleek Hong Kong Edition was dubbed “Best Chronograph of the Year” at the 2018 edition of the GHPG awards, recompensing Singer Reimagined’s creativity and expertise just 18 months after the brand was launched.

septic interiors have become a little boring. It’s time for opulence and fantasy - but still in an elegant way. We personalise our interiors with colour and original touches to give them character. Terracotta is still the dominant colour, mixed with other shades of ochre and counterbalanced with blue or aubergine. Animals have the wind in their sails, as does velvet in terms of fabric. Geometric shapes, lots of natural or raw materials and ceramics. The talent of Sylvain Mariat
and the expertise of Sebastien Barrau Sébastien Barrau is a man of extraordinary creativity who loves to surprise and innovate. He calls his work “technological art”. He renders unusual materials, such as Grade 5 titanium and NTPT carbon, sublime through processes borrowed from the field of aeronautics. With a solid grounding in metal-work in the aerospace, automobile and aeronautical industries, Sébastien Barrau makes bespoke pieces, drawing on the purchaser’s past. By Apolline Chaize
Technological feats Grade 5 titanium; the name of a high-tech material that, when laser-treated, reveals the most delicate colours. Sébastien brings this elevation to life through French, aeronautical know-how. “Technology becomes the vector for the manufacture of unique pieces of unparalleled style,” explains Sébastien. At the heart of this “technological art” is something he never forgets: a combi126
nation of his feelings and those of his client.
Titanium and precious metals It took Sébastien Barrau Manufacture two years of research to develop effective machining strategies and the process also led to many an incident giving rise to exciting discoveries. The result was a complete palette of effects. On top of this are added fine textures such as sycamore, ebony
and precious materials. It is thanks to a team of engineers passionate about technological performance that these atypical Sébastien Barrau creations come about.
Transmitting a unique work “For buyers, recounting key moments in their story or including their own past in an exceptional object is quite unusual,” explains Sébastien. In this lies the achievement of an
ambitious designer who sees his creations as “objects of transmission” between the generations. For Sébastien, this is what luxury is all about. He makes products of impeccable quality in order that his art may stand the test of time whether in the air, at sea or in a warm and inviting living room.

ALBATROS
MALLETIER Vintage luxury Are you a fan of beautiful objects and do you appreciate those which have a touch of vintage mixed in with luxury? Then you will love the French company, Albatros-Malletier, whose luxury trunks and cases flirt with perfection. By Caroline Garros
Luxury – French-style
A deliciously vintage design
Albatros-Malletier makes a range of trunks and high-end luggage and cases for holidaying or business trips, as well as quite wonderful items designed to decorate the home. Each piece is painstakingly made with great attention to detail by French craftsmen and women whose passion and excellence shines through in all they do. From the screw in the hinge to the patent polished mahogany, Albatros makes it a point of honour to only use 100% French materials, thus ensuring their quality. Craftsmanship, a constant quest for perfection and quality materials; this is a company that obeys the rules of luxury to the letter and knows how to satisfy even the most demanding of clients. In fact, a luxury hotel on the Croisette in Cannes is so impressed with AlbatrosMalletier’s work it has just ordered a cigar trunk to install in its legendary premises.
Albatros-Malletier’s products are instantly recognisable because of their distinctive and original style and the vintage design is reminiscent of the sublime trunks of yesteryear. This is particularly noticeable with the classic Agatha collection and the elegant Hastings attaché case inspired by the works of Agatha Christie. This exceptional piece with its smart lines has become the brand’s signature product. And to top it all off, Albatros-Malletier proposes tailor-made products, entirely personalisable depending on the wishes, needs, logos and corporate colours of clients. Whether you want a timeless wardrobe, a splendid shoe case or a luxury whisky holder, Albatros-Malletier will adapt to suit you. Albatros-Malletier can now be viewed at BentleyBordeaux.

Chisel & Mouse
A Small World Filled With Big Ideas Buildings and cityscapes have captured the human imagination for millennia. Urban landscapes, with their heady mix of architecture, thoroughfares and parks, chart the course of history. They describe the ideals, visions and aspirations of numerous individuals, in a small world filled with big ideas. Pulsating and constantly growing, cities and their buildings are like living organisms, providing places of refuge, recreation, employment, learning and more. As curious beings, we explore, admire and enjoy the varied pleasures that cities have to offer. Indeed, we are so fascinated by architecture, many of us display examples of great buildings and cities in our homes, schools and offices. By Samantha King
Artisan and innovator
A meticulous copy
Chisel & Mouse is the combination of an artisan’s approach (the chisel) with modern innovation and transformative technologies (the mouse). By capturing life and its big ideas in miniature, the brand celebrates the beauty of our industrialised world. To make a scale model of a building or cityscape requires dexterity, artistry, a keen eye for detail and patience. At Chisel & Mouse, brothers Robert and Gavin Paisley have been casting and handcrafting exact physical representations of architectural landmarks and cityscapes since 2011. Every piece is a finely balanced sculpture and a remarkably faithful impression of an iconic building or city. Robert and Gavin strive to communicate and depict works that are aesthetically pleasing, thorough and honest in their presentation.
The sculptures made by Chisel & Mouse are just perfect if you are looking for something (perhaps a gift) that is unique and unusual. What’s more, they are greatly appreciated and admired by design aficionados and novices alike. The brand’s meticulous copies of famous buildings include the modernist Bauhaus Dessau by Walter Gropius, the brutalist Trellick Tower by Erno Goldfinger, and the art nouveau Helsinki Central Station by Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen. A number of limited edition models and miniature minis complete the handmade (signed and dated) collection. Among new additions you will find the acclaimed modern mid-century classic Farnsworth House, two stunning Nicholas Hawksmoor London churches and three classic architectural models by François Fouquet
130
from the Sir John Soane’s Museum collection The Chisel & Mouse models of Christ Church and St Mary Woolnoth are the company’s most complex pieces to date. In presenting the striking front elevation of each church, the models successfully capture the essence of Nicholas Hawksmoor’s imaginative English Baroque style. A homage to one of Robert and Gavin Paisley’s favourite architects, the Christ Church and St Mary Woolnoth models were a labour of love—it took the brothers a year to perfect the first model. Similar to the eye-catching church structures they embody, the models are artistic statement pieces that are a delight to behold.

Cityscapes For Chisel & Mouse, cities are a model-makers goldmine, offering a fascinating opportunity to explore and capture the urban landscape in three-dimensional form. With their cityscapes, Chisel & Mouse craft an artistic representation of the physical geography of a city, capturing in faithful detail its architecture, thoroughfares, parks and waterways. To produce its cityscapes, Chisel & Mouse use satellite data to create a digital model. This then forms the basis of a 3D printed version of the environment; traditional moulding and plaster casting then come in to play and the digital– handmade cityscape is crafted. Accurate to the nearest metre,
132
cityscapes are scaled at 1: 5000 and capture an area of 1.5 km x 1.5 km. There are nine detailed cityscape models in Chisel & Mouse’s Classic Series to date, including the City of London, Manhattan’s southern tip and the area around Venice’s Grand Canal. For variations on the cityscape series, there is the Blue River Series, in which a brilliant blue hue highlights each city’s waterways, and the Large Cityscape Series, larger models of London and New York. Finally, a bespoke service from Chisel & Mouse is the perfect solution for people looking for architectural models of a celebrated building, a private residence or a much loved city. Souvenirs d’Avenir by
Jean-Marie Périer from carefree hippy days to the glittering nineties It is arguably the biggest exhibition of the season: celebrated photographer, Jean-Marie Périer, is showing more than 300 pictures in Paris, including some 100 never seen before, covering subjects from the Rolling Stones to Tom Ford. This exceptional retrospective is being held in a suitably stunning setting – the rooftop of the Grande Arche in Paris’s Défense neighbourhood. “Souvenirs d’Avenir” (“Future Memories”) covers two decades, tinged with light-heartedness and a touch of show time, as freedom sets the tone for a delightful insouciance and prolific creativity. “Exhibiting your photos is a great privilege, but there may be many reasons for doing so: your ego, a desire for renown or recognition from your peers for example. I have just one reason and that is to give pleasure to others. Because I am well aware that in France, as elsewhere in the world, those who come to my exhibitions are often looking to recapture their youth. If I had simply immortalised magnificent bouquets of flowers, I’m not sure people would come to admire my “huge” talent. Others want to dream of a period they never knew, moved by nostalgia for a time filled with freedom, insouciance and a naivety we’ve since lost. It was a blessed time during which I worked seriously at things that I don’t think were. “My lucky break was in meeting Daniel Filipacchi, the inventor of the magazine Salut les copains. Thanks to him, for a dozen years I had limitless means and unbridled freedom. I could suggest anything that popped into my head; no artist ever refused me anything or even asked to see the photo before publication. The trust they placed in me was total and my aim was to show them off to their best so that adolescents in France in the Sixties could decorate their rooms with shots of these artists they felt so close to although they were so far away. “It has to be said that only the young and the beautiful posed before my lens. We were the same age, but it was they who took me into their adventure and I will never forget that they would all have achieved success without me while me, without them…
It was a carefree time, as Eddie Barclay said: “We did more show than business.” Yesterday didn’t matter, tomorrow didn’t exist; there was only today.”
The Nineties “After 10 years in the United States making publicity films, I was beginning to seriously pine for France when my sister, Anne-Marie, called me from Paris. “You just need to become a photographer again. Look me up,” she said. She had, in fact, been running Elle magazine for more than 20 years. And that’s how I got back into the studio and began working with people from the world of fashion. “Curiously, the rock stars of yesteryear were now family guys and dress designers had become the new rock stars. No-one lived like Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld or Jean Paul Gaultier. They soon accepted me and I soon found the same liberty that I had enjoyed in the Sixties. In fact since the world of fashion was besotted with freedom and a love of art, I was able to get right back into my old habits of staging photos. Reality never having been my thing, I threw myself with pleasure into the world of fashion designers because on top of the fantasy and insolence of musicians they added an obsession for taste and elegance. “So this exhibition retraces the two periods of my life as a photographer: the Sixties on the one hand and the Nineties on the other. I don’t know if that makes a body of work, but in any case, it was worth living.”

Freeze frame What does it mean to be a human while technological progress is become ever more invasive with tension between what’s public and what’s private, online and offline and when the lines between virtual life and daily life are becoming blurred? What is the relationship between our personal identity and our virtual identity? “Touch Me”, the first edition of the Strasbourg Biennale, or Biennale d’Art Contemporain de Strasbourg, invites us to question the way in which our communication channels influence us. We freeze the frame with Point of View, a work by Berliner, Aram Bartholl. By Laure Delvigo
A
s masterful as it is minimalist, Point of View questions the current paradigm shift of perspective. What is the role of the hand-held screen framing our daily life? How has gaming shaped the representation of our digital self? Over the past 100 years, screens have moved ever closer to our eyes. Most people today spend an increasingly significant amount of time looking at their Smartphone screen rather than that of their computer or television (not to mention the silver screen). Games have been a key driver in the growth of the digital culture over the past 40 years. The first person (or subjective) view popularised by computer games such as Doom and Duke Nukem has now entered the real world with the growing popularity of mounted cameras. Users of GoPro and
Google Glass generate a constant stream of pictures with their hands in view like a digital avatar. A whole range of digital glasses are about to enter the market. The Oculus Rift headset promises to give the classic idea of cyberspace an immersive reality, while others extend their body in public with the help of a selfie stick. Is view now leaving our body? Is the picture frame doomed to extinction? After Talk to Me at the MoMA, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, (2011) and Hyperpavillion at the Venice Biennale (2017), Point of View counts among the major exhibits of “Touch Me”, inviting each of us to reflect, to stop for a short moment and observe, press the pause button on our frenetic lives and get a little perspective.

Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele The Louis Vuitton Foundation is holding two exhibitions celebrating the life and works of two major figures of 20th century art: Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele. Egon Schiele - Self-Portrait 1912
Giving modern design a historic perspective Twenty-eight; that is the age at which Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele saw their lives cut short. And yet their artistic output, accumulated in a decade, was prolific, marked by an incredible lust for life and a rejection of established forms. The Louis Vuitton Foundation has created two separate visitor journeys to respect the different contexts for the works. For Egon Schiele it was Vienna of the 1900s, and for Jean142
Michel Basquiat, New York at the beginning of the 1980s. While the one was steeped in the artistic and cultural maelstrom created by the Vienna Secession, the other conveyed the underground vitality of the city that never sleeps.
Egon Schiele: a monograph of a historic artist This is the first time the institution has devoted a monograph to a “historic” artist - Egon Schiele. Fascinated by distorting bodies, the tragic
impression of existence and introspection, the Austrian painter, poet and drawer produced some 300 paintings and several thousand drawings. Here visitors can admire 120 of his works in more than 600 m² of pool-level galleries. The journey takes you through four rooms, following the concept of line and its development in the artist’s work: the ornamental line, the expressionist line, the combined line, fragmented and amputated.

Jean-Michel Basquiat - Untitled 1981
Jean-Michel Basquiat: a fresh take on drawing as an artistic concept The Louis Vuitton Foundation has rarely offered such an indepth retrospective of a single artist. An exception has been made for Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. From 1980 to 1988 he created more than 135 key works. On the menu is a presentation of unusual groups of works and several collaborations between the artist and Andy Warhol. We owe Jean-Michel Basquiat a fresh
take on drawing as an artistic concept, along with his habit of using cut and paste and his creation of new areas of reflection. The exhibition is spread over 2,500 m² and all four floors of the Frank Gehry building, with a visit organised chronologically or by themed groupings of works. The two exhibitions form part of one of the four major lines of the Louis Vuitton Foundation Collection: the subjective vision and expressionism of the artist. Not to be missed.

The soul of this resort in the Grand Massif is to be found in the play on lights coming from the surrounding peaks as they strike the façades of buildings cut like diamonds. Stroll around a little and the resort gradually turns into an open-air museum in which monumental works are on display such as Picasso’s La Tête de Femme, Le Boqueteau by Jean Dubuffet and Victor Vasarely’s Les Trois Hexagones. Head to the track and test your skills As a winter sports resort, Flaine is diversifying its leisure and cultural activity offers. There are plenty of opportunities for filling up on adrenalin in the programme – such as taking a lesson in driving on ice. This unusual activity offers a chance to have fun as you try to handle braking and skidding around tricky corners and put your foot down on the longest ice track in France (1.1 km). Learning how to drive on ice is fun and also useful; afterwards you will feel more at ease behind the wheel of your own car when the temperature drops below zero. This activity is only offered in two resorts in the whole of France and some leading Formula 1 and Formula E drivers regularly have a go!

Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner
An exceptional, limited edition As Bentley comes up to its centenary in 2019, the sumptuous Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner will be unveiled to the public at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (August 24-26). An edition limited to just 100 models, this exclusive car is a homage to Bentley’s founding father. By Apolline Chaize
W.O. Bentley’s 8 Litre In 1930, Walter Owen Bentley designed his last model: the 8 Litre. Bentley Motors would mark the British motor dynasty with this, the most splendid and luxurious car of its time. With a straight-six engine and a capacity of 7,983 cc, the 8 Litre was unveiled as the finest “town carriage” of the time.
Bespoke by Bentley In 2019 it will be the Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner limited series which will showcase the wealth of talent at Bentley Motors. Combining luxury and performance, this model will display all of Bentley’s prow146
ess in terms of innovation and craftsmanship skills. Made by hand, this flagship model is renowned as the most beautiful in the world.
A chapter in Bentley’s history The Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner draws on the design lines of the 8 Litre. The interior displays a range of exquisite features inspired by luxury living in the 1930s – key to which is the Mulliner illuminated cocktail cabinet. Through a window in the cabinet’s veneered tray you will spy a piece of the crankshaft from W.O. Bentley’s own 8 Litre. Rarely has a collector’s car had such presence, in part due to the quality of materials used:
Fireglow and Fireglow Heritage leather, lambskin mats, marquetry and a chromed radiator and grill.
British expertise Created in 1919, the principle founder, W.O. Bentley’s goal was “to build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class”. Today, Bentley Motors produces the most sought-after luxury cars in the world. It is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and state-of-the-art engineering. Bentley is most definitely one of those symbols of the superior quality of British manufacturing.

A family tradition Skiing enthusiast and entrepreneur Victor Edouard set up the company to create skis of outstanding quality for discerning snowsports devotees. It was also a fitting way of paying tribute to his great-grandfather, 1930s skier and mountaineer Marcel Livet, who was a member of the French Himalayan Committee for about ten years and passed on his passion for skiing and mountaineering to his descendants.
Championing the high standards of French craftsmanship At a time when many ski manufacturers were relocating production outside France, Marcel Livet opted to stay put and develop a premium product made entirely in France. The superb quality, design, techni150
cal performance and detailing of the skis reflect the high standards of traditional French craftsmanship and savoir-faire. Manufacturing for a small, exclusive clientele allows the firm to pay attention to every little detail and take especial care with finishing touches. For instance, all Marcel Livet skis are decorated with a bronze and enamel medallion made by a French fine art bronze foundry. Designs like the signature model “Marius” proudly proclaim their French origin, combining technical excellence with understated elegance and the thrill of knowing that each ski has been individually decorated by hand.
a comfortable, enjoyable ride on all types of snow. To guarantee optimum performance, Marcel Livet insists on using only the very finest materials, melding state-ofthe-art technology with traditional knowhow to ensure all its skis meet the highest standards of performance, resistance, tensile strength and stability. A shock-resistant ash wood core is combined with a hightech laminate containing materials such as glass and carbon fibres. The resulting skis are truly superlative.
Performance in all weathers Because the weather can change suddenly in mountain climates, Marcel Livet’s wooden skis have been specially designed to give

Maura Wasescha
the central character in a true story
154
An outstanding career, skilfully managed; Maura Wasescha has been building up a reputation as a standard-setter in the luxury ski resort of Saint-Moritz and beyond the Swiss borders for 40 years now. A remarkable woman, devoted to excellence. By Apolline Chaize
design
A little Italian girl who stood out from the crowd Maura Wasescha was born in Italy and spent the first 19 years of her life there. She had already formed a character that would be the key to her success; even as a little girl she liked to “break the rules”. And she was certainly going to need to do so to become the reference in the luxury real estate market of the prestigious Saint-Moritz resort.
The mark of a loving family “We love life” in Maura’s family. This was evident in her parents who passed on to her a love of dance, music and cookery. Her grandmother shared with Maura her deep attachment to religion so Maura sang in church choirs and enjoyed “feeling fresh air in her lungs”. As for her grandfather, he taught her values such as the importance of sharing. These are values Maura lives by every day in her dealings with her clients, her friends, her husband and her children.
Maura, the woman “Roots are important and I will never forget where I’m from,” says Maura who skilfully juggles a constellation of roles: businesswoman, mother-of-four, grandmother and wife. A determined woman, her motto is “Non mollare mai”, “Never give up”, and she finds her strength in meditation and nature.
Nature as an anchor Maura Wasescha travels more than 80,000 kilometres per year, not counting plane and train journeys that carry her to
the four corners of the globe. Such generous and quality investment is one of the reasons for her success story. Ever keen to maintain a healthy mind in a healthy body, Maura affirms: “I am a woman of nature. I recharge my batteries by walking miles in harmony with nature.” It is far from the hustle and bustle and near to the essential that Maura finds the strength that has made her talents so admired.
A businesswoman with a mind for excellence Maura Wasescha’s agency goes above and beyond the sale and rental of luxury properties. She also offers personalised, luxury concierge, consulting and interior design services. “There must be no possible comparison” is how Maura defines the luxury aspect of each of these services. The client benefits from Maura’s commitment and a special client relationship. She focuses on uniqueness to take care of their every wish and give them access to all that is rare.
A 40-year-old success story To celebrate 40 years of career, Maura Wasescha has chosen to publish a bespoke magazine. It retraces the exciting success story of this humanist woman who built her business with her own hands against many odds. As Maura puts it: “When you are sure of something and you do not want it just for yourself, then all your dreams can come true.”

S
t Moritz is, without doubt, one of the most jet-set resorts in the Alps. Artists and stars flock here to enjoy the luxury hotels, the casino and the number of attractions it has to offer in winter and summer alike. Brigitte Bardot and Alfred Hitchcock were past regulars while more recently, retired footballer Ronaldo decided to spend his holidays here. St Moritz is also famous for hosting, every year, the prestigious St Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow event as well as horse racing on the frozen lake, the White Turf St. Moritz International Horse Races, in February. And it has the only natural ice bobsleigh track in the world which attracts international athletes every winter. In fact it is largely down to this incredible track that the resort got to organise the Winter Olympics twice, as well as bobsleigh world championship races. The mountains of Corviglia, Diavolezza and Corvatsch are covered in downhill and cross-country pistes which are a delight for skiers and snowboarders alike. St. Moritz is a resort that is busy all year round. In the summer, culture and music take over from skis and skates
with the Engadin Festival, an international classical music festival. There is also the prestigious St. Moritz Art Masters during which various artists present their works. As soon as the weather is fine, the lake also welcomes kitesurfers and windsurfers surrounded by the splendid natural beauty of the snow-capped peaks and the valleys. For those who prefer to unwind in a more relaxing way, the Medical Therapy Centre and Spa has everything you could possibly wish for in the most luxurious surroundings. Finally, if you want to really appreciate the sumptuous panoramas the valley has to offer, the Bernina Express is ideal. This scenic route train runs along one of the most spectacular railway lines in Europe, taking you through St Moritz and on to Val Poschiavo. And finally, this fashionable resort has a space entirely devoted to shopping, with all the major luxury brands, and gastronomic mountain restaurants too. As well as the famous Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, St Moritz is home to numerous five-star establishments, meaning you really can enjoy a dream holiday in the heart of Switzerland’s snowy mountains.

chef
Andreas
Caminada
the chef
with the
Midas touch He’s barely into his forties, yet he already has a CV that most chefs would be happy to retire on. His imagination in terms of dishes and dining experiences knows no bounds, Michelin stars and Gault&Millau points flock to him like moths to a candle, his natural charm has made him the brand ambassador for a leading watchmaker and his natural generosity has led him to set up a foundation to nurture young, culinary talent. Welcome to Andreas Caminada’s world. By Samantha King
“
There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” This quote from Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw is on the homepage of Andreas Caminada’s website and indeed, food has been the love of the Swiss chef’s life since he was a child. He always knew he wanted to be a chef and has never lost his focus. His talents can be experienced in Saint-Moritz at Badrutt’s Palace where he opened his second IGNIV “Fine Dining Sharing Experience
162
Nest” in December 2016. Within months it had received a Michelin star. The concept is delightfully simple – and simply delightful: guests select dishes from a sharing menu and these are then placed in the centre of their table and everyone dips in. The menu is a combination of Alpine aromas and exotic fare and, like all of Andreas’s cuisine, is designed to satisfy all the senses. The concept has proved such a hit in Switzerland, Andreas has recently been showcasing
it abroad; he took his “IGNIV on tour” to St Regis hotels in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in October and November. But let’s rewind a little. After leaving school, Andreas honed his skills in various hotels and restaurants in Switzerland but always had in mind opening his own establishment. So, in 2003, aged just 26, he bought the fairy tale Schloss Schauenstein in the tiny Swiss town of Füstenau in the Viamala region of the Graübunden canton. At the time the castle had been closed
up for two years. Starting with a small team, he set to work untiringly and soon his commitment paid off. Within a few years the restaurant he opened in the Schloss was popping up in major guides and the cuisine was receiving accolades. Bolstered by such success, Andreas expanded the business and Schauenstein is now a renowned boutique hotel with just nine rooms and suites – all decorated in the finest taste, combining modern furniture and design with the historic fea-
chef
tures of this castle that Andreas describes as “the heart of my world and the place of my endeavours’ origin”. The hotel has now expanded to fill surrounding buildings to be able to incorporate the kind of features you would expect at a luxury establishment such as a swimming pool and grounds. As for the restaurant, it made Andreas the youngest chef in Europe to be awarded three Michelin stars, has 19 Gault&Millau points and came first in Opinionated About Dining’s 2018 guide. Meanwhile, he turned the old coach house into the Remisa, a cosy and informal spot for tea in the afternoon or a private dining experience in the evening. With the Schloss firmly on the map, it was time for Andreas to expand and so, together with his friend Sandro Steingruber, he set up his own gourmet catering company, acasa. This takes bookings for everything from a gourmet dinner at home with a private chef working their magic in your kitchen to wedding receptions. Andreas’s culinary philosophy is all about sharing, as is evident in his IGNIV restaurants in Saint-Moritz and Bad Ragaz. His favourite ingredients could be described as rather simple and generally familiar – on paper at least! Once he has interpreted those ingredients into a dish they are far from that. If you had to pinpoint a signature talent, it would be his ability to create and combine various preparations out of one single ingredient. Whether crunchy, sweet, crisp, tart or bitter – each component fits intriguingly. And diners often marvel over the level of synchronisation and balance he achieves. His love of sharing spreads beyond the kitchen; his “bookazine” Caminada Documenta comes out every six months and is a wonderful combination of cookbook and magazine. It lets readers in on the secrets of how he combines his cuisine with other art forms. He also reveals
the sources of his inspiration and, in turn, seeks to inspire others. But surely the best example of the generosity of Andreas’s nature is to be found in his foundation: Fundaziun Uccelin. In the very name of this foundation a pattern can be detected – IGNIV is the Rhaeto-Romanic word for nest, while Uccelin refers to a fledgling bird. “I have a strong desire to foster the individual development of ambitious and talented gastronomy professionals,” explains Andreas. “Through the foundation, I intend not only to provide them with financial assistance but also to further their personal development. A key objective is to provide aspiring chefs with an insight into the immense variety encompassed by the world’s different cooking styles, thus making sure that the quality of this wonderful discipline is sustainably maintained over the years to come.” The foundation offers training schemes and scholarships for young chefs and waiting professionals from Switzerland and around the world. Some of the funding for Uccelin comes from the sales of a special Uccelin knife – just one of the offerings from the range of chef’s knives, chopping boards, jackets, aprons and even a room fragrance available from Andreas’s online shop. It is hardly surprising that such a personable and talented person should attract the attention of luxury brands and so, in 2017, Andreas was invited to become a brand ambassador for Hublot. Making the announcement, the Swiss watchmakers commented: “Andreas Caminada likes simple and natural things. He skilfully combines audacity, innovation and tradition. Eating at his table is like sitting down at the family table – so convivial is the atmosphere he cultivates.” We could hardly have put it better ourselves!

The Totem in Flaine: a Bauhaus heritage The spirit of the Totem is to be found in the original Bauhaus architectural construction that the master of minimalism, Marcel Breuer, chose when he designed Flaine. A subtle combination of simplicity, functionality and pared-down elegance, the Totem hotel contributes to the splendour and singularity of the resort. Flaine truly is an open-air museum in which lovers of modern art appreciate the prestige of this architectural heritage. Despite its apparently austere style, the buildings and the town respect the natural treasure to be found in the beauty of the surrounding peaks. Visitors gradually soak up this natural energy in the game of shadows and lights orchestrated by Breuer who designed the façades of buildings to be cut like diamonds to achieve this effect.
A designer yet warm décor The Totem in Flaine is opposite a work of art by Picasso. A little further away sculptures
by Jean Dubuffet and Victor Vasarely line the paths in this Grand Massif resort. The owners of the premises have managed to maintain the concrete chimneys and walls of this 1960s building. The rooms have been given a thorough makeover and brightened up with vintage furniture such as solid chestnut tables. The designer décor from Jocelyne Sibuet remains warm however, thanks to the use of very much on-trend Maya prints, woollen fabric with ethnic patterns and graphical tags. The building has many a recess now filled with ski shops and a tearoom, a friendly spot for relaxing and meeting other guests. The Breuer tables are placed next to Rock the Kabash sofas, Bertoia chairs and other delights picked up here and there.
their own bubble of tranquillity. And if they get peckish, croissants and tapas are available at any time at the bar, or perhaps you would rather sit down in the restaurant for an organic salad – here you will find Savoyard specialities but plenty more besides! Seasonal produce is combined with aromas from around the world for a tasting menu that changes every day. Once you have filled up, both on the dishes on offer and the sporting activities you have indulged in during the day, it is time to head back to your room, the decoration of which is a mischievous contrast, somewhere between street art and Dubuffet. Just like the 150 m² loft with its private terrace and spectacular, panoramic view, the Totem is a shining example of the Flaine spirit and the “Maison & Hôtel Sibuet” spirit.

Beaches of white sand and natural wonders The name “Mauritius” instantly conjures up stretches of white sand and calm lagoon waters. The beaches are one of the jewels in its crown, and its waters are among the best in the world. But visitors who venture inland will be rewarded with gorgeous scenery and luxuriant vegetation. Places well worth visiting include the Black River Gorges National Park which was set up to preserve the island’s remaining natural rainforest and the famous Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, created by the botanist Pierre Poivre in the eighteenth century, which covers 37 hectares and contains a host of species from all over the world, including the baobab, giant water lilies and over 95 species of palm trees.
During the colonial period, this modest-sized mountain (its summit is 556 metres above sea level) in the south-western part of Mauritius Island was a refuge for runaway slaves. Today, it is both a reminder of the past and a symbol of freedom.
Activities for everyone Away from its legendary beaches, the island has plenty else to offer. Popular activities include diving and snorkelling to see jewel-coloured fish with exotic names and strangely-shaped coral formations from close up. There is no shortage of peaks for hikers to climb. Golfers are catered for, with several 9-and 18-hole courses. And travellers who like to combine discovery with adventure can try parasailing or take a trip in a microlight or a seaplane.
A rich cultural heritage
A gourmet’s paradise
Mauritius is steeped in history and its colonial past has left a rich and composite cultural heritage. There are many places that bear witness to its fascinating history including the Domaine des Aubineaux, a typical late nineteenth-century colonial house located on the high plateaux and Le Morne Brabant, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mauritius is a gourmet’s paradise. The island nation’s multicultural history has resulted in a staggeringly varied cuisine, with dishes from India, the Far East, Europe and Africa. Its rich mix of spices and aromas will delight even the most exacting palate and lure visitors to startle their taste-buds with exotic new flavours. The only rule is “Enjoy!”

THE VAUDEVILLE THE ART DECO BRASSERIE, PLACE DE LA BOURSE A short-order recommendation in Paris for decades: dine at the Bourse. Or rather, opposite the Bourse by taking a table at the celebrated Vaudeville. This former theatre famously staged the first triumphant performance of La Dame aux Camélias. This is a watering hole for many actors, writers and intellectuals coming to enjoy a delicious seafood platter for example or one of the other dishes that have made French cuisine’s reputation such as Vaudeville-style tête de veau (which sounds so much more poetic than “calf’s head”) accompanied by a ravigote sauce or a sole meunière. These days the biggest brasserie in the west of Paris is enjoying a new lease on life and
has reopened its famous and grandiose ballroom with a brand new calendar of events while fans of the brasserie delight in the oyster bar and its generous seafood platters. Or how about an Alsatian sauerkraut or crêpe Suzettes flambéed in Grand Marnier?

CLINIC Lémanic
Darrell Jacobs is one of those very determined and efficient men who have dedicated themselves body and soul to carrying out their mission. This ambition has been crowned with success by the international growth of Clinic Lémanic, dedicated to preventive and aesthetic anti-ageing medicine.
F
ounded in 1998 in collaboration with Doctor Véronique Emmenegger, Clinic Lémanic is one of their greatest achievements. It is moreover due to the fruitful combination of their personalities and savoir-faire that it has become an essential reference in aesthetic, preventive and regenerative medicine. Guided by their interests and their mutual striving for excellence, they have created a different, individual vision of medicine combining beauty and health. More complete and selective, more human and attentive, and above all more personally involved! Once inside this sanctuary entirely dedicated to beauty and health, one discovers the ne plus ultra of advanced treatments and one allows oneself to be directed to exclusive, innovative and personalised medical solutions. “Here there is no limit to perfection”, advocates Darrell Jacobs. It is in fact with great pride that he entrusts us with the launching of a line of active, natural beauty products, as well as recent advances in micro-nutritional care. For many 176
years, Clinic Lémanic has accomplished true feats in terms of medical research and in the creation of innovative products. In particular, these efforts are embodied in the creation of the “Health Boost” label proposing a line of eleven ultra-sought-after products. If he looks every bit the CEO, Darrell Jacobs is nevertheless an atypical personality. One may sometimes catch a glimpse of his athletic figure on one of the four floors of this prestigious clinic, but his traveller’s soul and his attachment to client relations often take him elsewhere. For, as he likes to say, “networking” is his favourite thing. Indeed, the clinic’s reputation and international management can be traced to him. In Switzerland and beyond its borders, in the Middle East and farther afield in Russia or China, he communicates with enthusiasm, authenticity and real passion the art of beauty and the demands of health that form but one at Clinic Lémanic! This is a special year for the clinic. It celebrates twenty years
of existence by displaying the very best health! Reflected in the many prizes and distinctions received these last few years, such as the IIPP prize for “Merit in the Development of Medical and Aesthetic Technologies” at UNESCO in Paris, the Crystal Trophy in Moscow recognizing it as the best aes-
thetic clinic in Europe, or, just recently, the international IIPP “Undertake and Succeed” emblem that it will receive in 2019. Cofounder of Clinic Lémanic with Doctor Véronique Emmenegger: the saga of the clinic is written together, in perfect synergy.

looking
to the future with
Régie Duboux
This is a company with an international reputation that needs no introduction. Created in 1952 and a firm fixture in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, Régie Duboux is a business people trust. We had a chat with Manager Robin Crisinel and he explained some of the changes under way in the property market. By Quitterie Pasquesoone
Mr Crisinel, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role? “Of course. As a manager in the firm for some 15 years now, I am delighted to be able to put my professional and social skills to help our clients. By focusing on the human side of things and our close relations with our clients, I hope to be able to offer them the quality service that property owners who come to us are looking for. How do you see today’s property market? How is it changing? It can’t be denied that the historically low mortgage rates are more attractive than before and are boosting the desire to own property. That said, those wishing to buy may see their ambitions hindered by financial players. In a bid to rein in the property market frenzy of the last few years, banks have indeed drastically reviewed their financing criteria. When it comes to investment properties, these are still holding up pretty well given their scarcity and the durability of bricks and mortar compared to other financial products. In summary, I would 178
say that the rays of sunlight on the residential property market are pretty watery while the skies over the investment property market remain cloud-free. What significant changes can we expect? Given the major building projects currently under way, the Lake Geneva region rental market is going to cool quite naturally, and this despite the implementation of the LPPPL - the law aimed at protecting and promoting rental property in the Vaud canton. The vacancy rate will logically rise and a price correction should be felt in all segments of residential accommodation. As a real estate professional, what will affect the sector next? With regards to the profession itself, it will continue to grow more complicated for various players, whether they are managers, administrators or brokers, because of the increase in legal and technical restrictions. This will only magnify the need for expertise and a more personalised service and will doubtless curtail the ambitions
of some. Your sales department offers just such a unique service; which is it? The relationship of trust that we create with our clients allows for a real dialogue between buyer, seller and broker. Furthermore, the fact that we
build loyalty with and train our partners and our decision to keep the firm relatively small means we are able to ensure quality services and keep our various promises.”

10 tips
to help you get through a dentist appointment without stress Many of us dread a visit to the dentist. But sometimes little things can make a world of difference. With the benefit of her 18 years of experience, Swiss expert Valeria Ivanova shares some of her tips for how to stay relaxed while you're at the dentist. 1. A treatment plan.
Make sure you understand what the dentist is going to do. Ask for an overall treatment plan in advance, and get your dentist to tell you exactly what is going to happen during each appointment.
2. Breathe!
Make sure you can breathe freely through your nose. If necessary, take nose-drops with you to clear your nasal passages.
3. A lip-salve.
Ask the dentist to apply lipsalve regularly, especially at the corners of your mouth, to keep them supple and prevent them from being damaged during dental procedures.
4. Ask for more anaesthetic.
Stress can make the anaesthetic wear off more quickly. Don’t suffer in silence - ask for more anaesthetic the moment you start to feel pain.
5. A lump in your throat.
When a local anaesthetic is injected, it may affect your throat so that you feel as if there is something blocking it. Ask for water: drinking just a small amount will cure the sensation.
6. Keep your eyes open.
Most people’s sensations are stronger when they have their eyes closed, so keep your eyes open. Look up and try to form a 180
mental picture. You could even ask to wear protective coloured goggles: they’ll help you see things differently.
7. Bring pictures.
If you’re having cosmetic dental work done, take along photographs of smiles you like to help the dentist visualize the result you are aiming for.
8. Ask for a written summary.
At the end of the treatment, ask for a written summary of the dental work carried out and for copies of X-rays and detailed information about any implants. In moments of stress, our memories retain very little, and it’s not always easy to hear what dentists say when they’re speaking through a mask.
9. Take painkillers.
Your mouth may feel very painful when the anaesthetic wears off. Take a painkiller before the effects of the anaesthetic have completely worn off, and another four hours later if need be.
10. Massage your gums.
To help gums heal and reduce the risk of bacterial infections, massage your gums several times a day with a very soft toothbrush of the kind used for babies. Brush your gums very gently on inside and outside surfaces, using a circular movement.

In everyday life, the body accumulates stress and fatigue in the form of toxins. toxins. It may show as a general lack of energy, low libido, a lacklustre performance, loss of focus or even lingering feelings of negativity. stress-induced toxins. Our City Détox programme is based on scientifc research and includes the latest discoveries in quantic medecine and genetics. Learn to love yourself and others through yoga
Yoga is all about learning to love yourself and others. As well as being a profoundly holistic therapy that heals the soul as well as the body, it is a powerful, deep-seated belief system. A highly gifted teacher who believes passionately in the power of yoga, Sylwia Gretarsson invites us to explore the world of yoga, rekindling the spark of hope we all harbour deep within us. By Fiona Esther.A
Sylwia Gretarsson Radiating inner light Sylwia spent a number of years roaming the world in search of happiness, spiritual equilibrium and overall well-being. Her journey took her from Poland to Costa Rica, Vancouver and India, where she finally found what she was looking for. Living alongside the yogis, she learned about the various forms of yoga, explored the belief system that underpins its ancestral techniques, and experienced the amazingly beneficial effects of its myriad positions. “Yoga frees the mind and soothes the body , achieving a balance of energies that allows us to open our hearts.” 190
Today, Sylwia passes on those benefits and shares her knowledge by teaching yoga all over the world. Participants in her individual or group sessions of Vinyasa Yoga or Yin Yoga emerge with a profound sense of contentment. Sylwia uses the Warrior, Child and Tree poses alternately to replenish the soul, strengthen or relax muscles, liberate the body’s energies or trigger a release of control. Her sessions always include a time for meditation, as a way of thanking the body. Sylwia is a modern-day healer. She knows how to listen to the body’s messages and interpret its needs to suggest suitable holistic therapies. Her soothing voice, expert touch and knowl-
edgeable advice on alternative medicine are instantly reassuring. As an aromatherapist, Sylwia takes the same holistic approach when combining minuscule drops of essential oils such as lavender, grapefruit, fennel and helichrysum to create individualized health-restoring blends. Sylwia loves what she does, and she is fortunate enough to have found a life partner who shares her goals. Her husband Felix is a life coach who has had to overcome adversity in his own life. For people who want to get away from everything and immerse themselves totally in the experience, the couple organize retreats lasting a week or a long weekend at prestig-
ious venues selected for their charm and character. On Sylwia and Felix’s retreats, participants can truly let go, recharge their batteries and explore their inner selves. Sylwia describes the experience as a spiritual rebirth. Morning and evening yoga sessions, healing massages and delicious, cleansing gastronomic cuisine help participants regenerate. This is luxury in its truest sense - a rebirth through the senses that frees the mind, body and spirit. What are you waiting for? Let the journey begin...
