he Bestiary fable has been re-invented by Blush. And the 2010 version is packed with animals - real and imaginary - stones and scents A mighty beast! Hugh Jackman, one of the most sought after actors on the planet, tells us of his new life in Hollywood after his childhood in Australia. A meeting with a real man! Ferosh! Our two panthers went on a high jewellery safari, swathed in hide and furs by JeanClaude Jitrois! The Prince of Stretch Leather welcomed us into his home for an interview as fantastical and sexy as the man himself. And if “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger” to quote the famous designer, then why not try out new highly-select refuges? The lodge style – luxury in Nature’s bosom - takes pride of place among the most beautiful hotels in the world. Not for the Bestiary the boredom of the standard – it flees this all the better to emphasise the unique beauty of the irregular. The sculptor Michel Haillard reveals his chairs that resemble African thrones while the magic of pearls – true diamonds of the seas – never ceases to fascinate us. A dreamy delicacy that brings to mind the grace of beginnings.

Wave goodbye to weekly Botox injections: massages are chasing cosmetic surgeons out of town! First we need to distinguish between the liftmassage and the lipomassage from LPG. The former entails eight sessions spread over the course of a month and adopts a whole new approach to cellular aging. Jewellery In all its majesty!

Dali had the splendours and excesses that characterise royalty in mind when he designed this collection, and each piece is incrusted with the effigy of the Catalan artist accompanied by his eternal muse, Gala. The inspiration came in particular from the extravagance of King Louis XIV and the riches that were so endemic of his reign such as the “golden Louis” coins decorated with his portrait. Luxurious and phantasmagorical, magic mirrors, crosses, pendants and other items exude an aura of mystery by which the Sun King himself would doubtless be honoured. Dali d’Or et Bijoux de Gala until

Beauty at the environment’s service. The philosophy of JEL (jewellery ethical luxury) is simple: create exceptional but responsible jewellery, respectful of both minerals and metals such as gold, worked in an ethical way. A partner of the Green Gold programme in Colombia, JEL follows strictly controlled work methods. From the rare pure gold nuggets arising from the biodiversity of the Choco region to the manufacture of the jewels (made entirely in France), JEL is an example of a singular concept, its vision set firmly towards the future. An object of desire An eyeful!

For slowcoaches, the superb exhibition devoted to Madeleine Vionnet is still on and runs until January 31 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. It provides an excellent opportunity to (re)discover this huge designer from the Roaring Twenties who has inspired the likes of Balenciaga, John Galliano and Azzedine Alaïa, but who remains undeservedly little known by the general public. Another reason why fashionistas are set to adore 2010 is that the much-awaited retrospective of the late great Yves Saint Laurent will be on at the Petit Palais de Paris from March until August. More than 40 years of fashion, style and innovation. Time to dust of the tuxedos?

Yesterday it was considered so naff but today the watch is re-emerging from the jewellery box. And we want it! The 2009 version, swathed in gold and diamonds has been given a make-over by Diane von Furstemberg for the Brazilian jeweller H. Stern. Decidedly Art Deco, and in a word, superb. The name of this perfume brings together our feminine side with the “elegant animal” in us, according to Serge Lutens, a master of high perfumery. Olivier Durbano Parfum de Pierres Poèmes

This enigmatic fragrance is inspired by the myth surrounding rock crystal, a symbol of protection, and incense, a resin venerated since ancient antiquity. “The celestial fragrance of serenity”, incense unites the finite and the infinite, the mortal and the immortal, man and god. Symbolising purification, it uplifts the spirit towards the divine. Dusted with notes of benzoin, Myrrh, orange, sandalwood and musk, we love its woody, spicy character, just like the sublime flower-jewels of this young designer whose talent is matched only by his refinement. Kilian’s sumptuous new collection of elixirs under the title “Arabian Nights” is a homage to the Oriental world. Pure Oud is the first stop on an olfactory voyage. Legend has it that Oud wood was worth more than its weight in gold. Echoing the legend, the bottle and its glossy wooden box have been decorated with a gold plate engraved with the name of the perfume. SPAS

Winter is here, now there is only one goal: save your skin! What better after all those trips than a relaxing fix right in the heart of society, among the most trendy and luxurious spots in the world. Find the best spas from London to Milan via Geneva and Paris with the only rule being your well-being! By Maeva Tepea

spa

La Réserve Spa, Geneva Punctual and neutral, Switzerland is also known for its legendary fresh water treatments. The La Réserve spa, in the hotel of the same name, features among the most beautiful spas in the world. Decorated by Jacques Garcia, this unique spot represents a real break from the outside world. There are many choices in the 2,000m² dedicated to fighting off the first wrinkles, watching one’s weight or simply seeking a total well-being. With outside and indoor swimming pools, whose purple reflections light up an anthracite bottom touched with golden mosaic, the sauna, steam room, fitness gym, hair salon and tennis courts, this spa won the Best Innovative Spa Concept award in 2007. In it you will find every service you could dream of during your stay. On the treatment side there are also a multitude of possibilities; aquatic treatments, massages (including the 4-hand massage, a 20-fingered delight!), body scrubs and La Prairie and Cinq Mondes treatments (whose reputations precede them). On top of that in this world of wonders, each client is unique and each programme is adapted to them. Pure made-to-measure! La Reserve Spa, 301 route de Lausanne. 1293 Bellevue. The Carlyle Spa, New York When Sisley decided to create its own spa, it was only to be expected that the address would match the reputation of one of the biggest brands of cosmetics in the world. The recipe is very simple: Manhattan, Sisley and one of the biggest, legendary hotels the other side of the Atlantic. It has to be the Carlyle. And it is in the heart of the Upper East Side that you will find the newly-opened Sense Spa – in luxurious art deco just like the hotel itself. The treatment rooms are in black and grey, with platinum-coloured mosaic from floor to ceiling setting the decorative tone. As for the accessories, there is an antique mirror here, a few Zen paintings there and enchanting wall chandeliers. A must. Aside from the Carrara marble in the steam rooms, there is the Sisley treatment programme. Nothing less than an exclusive range created for the hotel to make this even better. Of course the treatments on offer match the image of Sense Spa. Our advice – book a massage with Jana. This specialist in ‘stress points’ (she knows how to reach those tensed-up zones) will make even the tiredest old bodies feel brand new. And on top of this dream spa, the view of the Manhattan skyline is breath-taking! The Carlyle, 35 East 76th Street, New York, NY 10021, 001 212.744.1600 www.thecarlyle.com

La Bulle Kenzo, Paris La Bulle Kenzo is a beauty stop-off on the Rue du Pont Neuf in the heart of the city of lights. The spa-boutique just like the brand mixes beauty and originality and was created with pure pleasure in mind – for both the body and the eyes! The poppy brand has spread far and wide thanks to Kenzoki, which literally means the treatment that does you good. Forget traditional treatments. With the programmes of the Bulle you will experience new sensations. In fact all five of your senses will be involved: the floral and aquatic aromas will waft delicately around you, a conversation will take place just for the sake of discussion, and a strange suspended piece of furniture will simply make you smile. But above all there are the original treatments such as a massage of candles and rice, an experience tailor-made to the sound of your voice or the tactile and climatic variations on the skin of your face and body. As far as a full-on atmosphere is concerned, discover the atypical, aesthetic and futuristic look of white, mauve and pink, or disco balls and gold-coloured lamps (in the treatment rooms), the suspended shapes that reflect the Japanese brand, the poppy, water, and bamboo leaves. The Bulle Kenzo has a very singular atmosphere and very singular treatments because every one of us deserves something exceptional!

The Bvlgari Spa, Milan Bvlgari… does the name sound familiar? Well the spa at the Bvlgari Hotel is an absolute diamond in its purest form. This gem of well-being dressed in green and gold will fulfil your every need. Hidden in the lush gardens typical of Italy, in the heart of an ancient monastery, this area of relaxation and meditation offers every treatment you could hope for. Ancient marble columns are the backdrop for a refined and intimate décor (matt black marble, bronze, oak and Venetian stones) setting off an absolute jewel. We love the urban swimming pool with its incredible shades, conducive to the reveries set off by the Balinese and oriental treatments such as the Indian head massage, an absolute sapphire of relaxation after a Turkish steam bath. This magnificent emerald spa can be summed up in one word: sparkling. And for afters? A trip to the Bvlgari sanctuary just two steps from the hotel. Because as a gorgeous blond in a blown-away dress once said: Diamonds are a girl’s best friend! Bvlgari Hotel, 7 via Gabba Fratelli, Milan 0039 02 805 805 1

The K Spa, London Don’t be fooled by a façade that somewhat resembles the Pompidou museum. The K-West Hotel is an architectural pearl. Renovated, modernised but above all much more trendy, this highly original establishment holds only good surprises. Blending in with the urban décor that surrounds it, the K Spa is a world apart, far from the London madness. On the treatment side, you will find new aromatherapy techniques, hot stones as a body treatment and modellages. But these are all “classics”. Let me tell you about the frankly atypical treatments. For example there is the dry flotation (don’t worry, you will remain in the submerged part!), or the technique the secret of which is known only to K-Spa – the passive weightless immersion. Unique sensations where the mind and spirit combine to form one. Are you looking for psychological serenity? Get away from it all for as long as the treatment lasts in the heart of one of the most pulsating capitals of the millennium. La Reserve Spa Caviar of beauty

Refined comfort, beauty without the brashness of ostentatious luxury. You will quickly feel a sense of total harmony in this dream environment. Exceptionally proficient and discreet practitioners, a setting of breath-taking purity, an interior designed by Jacques Garcia capable of winning over and surprising the most demanding of top class travellers – La Reserve Spa offers all this and more. And when such an exceptional setting gets together with the ultimate in luxury products, La Prairie’s Caviar collection, La Reserve really can boast of being the caviar of beauty. Its only creed: excellence! By Laure Delvigo

You are in Switzerland to brush away those little winter irritations, erase the stress of an over-active life. In short, you are seeking serenity. La Reserve Spa is just what you are looking for. Tranquillity, the know-how of a carefully-selected team, attentive service and an attention to detail and to perfection in an out-of-the-ordinary setting. Echoing the standards of La Reserve Spa (voted Best Innovative Spa Concept at the 2007 Gala Spa Awards and best hotel spa in Europe and 2nd best in the world by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller in 2006) La Prairie is supremely luxurious, its products producing outstanding results with its Caviar collection quickly gathering a cult following.

40

A byword for luxury par excellence, caviar has been the delight of epicureans since the Roaring Twenties. In the choice of eggs, its manufacture and conservation, caviar is a complex product; the results of extremely rigorous ancient know-how. The magic of caviar resides in the work of man, a guarantee of quality in the finished product. The work is long (up to 18 months) and carried out by a few rare specialists with 10 years of training behind them. It is this painstaking labour that explains the cost of this black gold, the price of which can easily rise above €8,000 per kilo making caviar a rare luxury product. It is perhaps because the taste and sensation of caviar remain unequalled that La Prairie has used it to develop

one of the most sought after care products in the world; the Caviar firming range. Unprecedented formulas using caviar extract, a cellular complex exclusive to La Prairie, highperformance peptides, an amino acid, stabilised Vitamin C, Alpha Hydroxyl Acids and natural vegetable extracts: this is the recipe which ensures firm, boosted smooth skin. The key is in the firming agents that increase cellular multiplication. Combined with caviar extract, they enhance the skin’s elasticity and firmness and visibly smooth it. At La Reserve Spa, you can enjoy 80 minutes of pure pleasure, safe in the expert hands of an ambassador of La Prairie, working to the rhythm of some well chosen baroque music. Using the beauty-boosting properties

of the finest caviar in the world, the body treatment produces an immediate and long-lasting firming effect, while restoring vitality and radiance to tired skin. Spectacular! The Magic of Pearls True diamonds of the sea, surrounded by myths and legends that make one dream, the pearl continues to fascinate us. Let’s dive into the palaces of the sea nymph and take a closer look at their milky treasures. By Nicolas Berger.

The history of pearls and the fascination they arouse dates back to time immemorial. In fact, as long ago as 2300 BC, Chinese inscriptions indicate that pearls were gems of value and considered as a gift from nature. Ancient Hindu texts also make repeated references to pearls, claiming the first one was discovered by the god Krishna in a secret place. Pearls were greatly admired in Ancient Rome where they were a symbol of wealth and prestige to such an extent that only those of sufficient rank were permitted to wear them. There is a legend of a banquet organised by Cleopatra for her lover, Mark Anthony. The fabulous occasion was described by Pliny the Elder in his book Naturalis Historia. The great Roman historian describes how Cleopatra intended to give the most expensive feast ever dreamt of. Mark Anthony wondered how she could win her bet. The proud Queen of Egypt took out one of her pearl earrings which, according to Pliny, was worth 10 million sestertii, and dropped it into a goblet of vinegar. Once the pearl had dissolved, she drank the contents and so won her bet. Arabs also revered pearls as there were many oyster beds throughout the Persian Gulf. They considered pearls to have great value because they are described in the Koran as one of the greatest treasures of paradise. Much later, the French and Spanish found fresh water pearls among their colonies and began to trade them. These pearls came from lakes and rivers. Then, aside from the freshwater pearls, they discovered sea pearls in the Caribbean. However, due to over-harvesting, this source of pearls dried up, and that was even before the development and pollution that started at the beginning of the 19th century. Aside from the pearls themselves, mother-of-pearl was greatly prized and used to make buttons for clothes. They were exported in large quantities, the figure rising to several billion traded world wide.

42

This business continued until the 1950s when the plastic trade took over the button trade. The history of the pearl took an important turn towards the end of the 19th century. This was when Japanese researchers independently discovered a technique that could be used to create cultured pearls. History retains the name of Kokichi Mikimoto who, thanks to his business acumen, found a way of marketing cultured pearls. On July 11, 1893, he became the first person in the world to cultivate a pearl. After several years of dedicated studies, he discovered that an oyster will cover any foreign body introduced into its shell with nacre, slowly enveloping it in the substance of which a pearl is made. Kokichi Mikimoto had just relaunched the global pearl trade, by making it accessible to buyers without detracting from its aura of mystery and its powers of seduction!

And let’s not forget crop trousers was only in fashion for one summer (oh yes) when Prada launched them in 1999 during the “intelligent clothing” wave. Burn all that please.

UPS He has been elected “the sexiest man in the world” by People magazine. You loved him in Van Helsing, you wept for him in Australia and you lusted after him in the X-Men... who is he? Easy: the swarthy, smiley, sculptured Hugh Jackman! Huuuugh!! Geek chic! They were so out yesterday with their bottle-end glasses and adolescent acne. But the Geek (or computer nerd) is soooo in today! Now our Nerd taps away on his new Samsung Agnès b. computer (399 euros), he downloads files onto his MP3 using a fabulous Louis Vuitton USB key (250 euros) and he spends hours Tweeting with his friends. What? You’re still doing Myspace and Facebook?! Tut tut. Glitz, glitter and champagne! Glam it up again this winter because the cream 48

Beyoncé in Mugler and Gareth Pugh for her world tour! Let’s get one thing straight: here at Blush we luuurve them all but the combination of the three seems a little unlikely. Beyoncé Knowles does curvaceous neo-gothic? We definitely prefer her as a soul Diva. But then I guess it has to be an improvement on the dresses her mum runs up for her! Wall stickers. You want them – you got them. Five years ago these were innovative and adorable. Now, we’re heading for an overdose. You can even pick them up for 5€ at Tati. That says it all. And as for taking them down, half the wall paint comes off with them. Every aspiring designer from Nowhere Ville is drawing them these

days!! And the same goes for screen print T-shirts, even if they are made from organic cotton. A little creativity for heaven’s sake! The rocker frizz. What is that you ask? It is what a young rocker who doesn’t have the same fabulous fine hair as his friends’ resorts to by opting for an afro-style mop of curls. Come on now, time to pay a visit to Mr Zouari and we can put all that right!! Oh, and another thing – skinny jeans with a belt below the bottom, that’s another no-no. Michael Jackson reality TV. This is really in bad taste. Apparently, before the King of Pop died, a pilot for a reality-TV show featuring the four brothers with whom he performed

as the Jackson Five was already being filmed. Now the show is going ahead. This would have been one project best left in the drawer. Leave Michael alone. Who’s bad?! The crisis. Oh yes, that again, we just can’t get away from it! Seriously though, the list of ‘fashion victims’ (no pun intended) is becoming dangerously long. After Christian Lacroix went into receivership, followed by Véronique Branquinho and Stella Cadente going into liquidation, now the German luxury brand Escada has filed for bankruptcy. And then there are all those designers such as Anne Valérie Hash who were unable to put on a show during the Haute Couture week... Help us Frédéric Mitterand!

of the designer crop (Balmain, Pucci, Rykiel, Gucci…) are doing razzle dazzle any way they can. Sequins are everywhere, on jackets, dresses, tops and harem trousers and not just as accessories! You can’t possibly overdo it this season. Along the same lines, (the 80s revival) leather and studs are invading our wardrobes. The style is a cross between Punk and S&M, so it will be you, ladies, who are wearing the trousers!! The entire world feverishly follows the adventures of her star character, Carrie Bradshaw. Or how money, fame and power remain the true religion here. For those still catching up, throw yourselves in to Beautiful People by Alicia Drake (Denoël, 25 euros). In it she depicts in great detail the crossed paths of two international fashion giants: YSL and Lagerfeld. More than 40 years of fashion and intrigue, the jet-set, champagne at the Coupole and the Palace! More glamour than Dynasty! Roll on monograms! Forget the metro, the bus and other rollers! Designers have gone all out to create the most chic alternative transport for you. Karl Lagerfeld has designed a gorgeous bike for Fendi, in the brand’s own colours. Via Montenapoleone: so cool! Along the same lines, you can stand out from the crowd in Avenue Montaigne with the concept car Fiole that Chanel ordered from the South Korean designer, Jin Young Jo. So chic, with the interlocking Cs on

the radiator! Or there is still the logo gyropod for strolls on the Croisette: Roberto Cavalli is never without his! Forget for a moment the Gossip Girl, Selma Blair and other Ugly Betties: welcome to the fresh and glamorous world of the new TV series 2010! The buzz? The Beautiful Life or how two young models from the country take on New York. This is the underside of fashion with, as a bonus, the return of Mischa Barton (ex New Port Beach) and former top model Elle Macpherson as the agency director. Not interested? Then console yourself with the last word in 90s series revivals: Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210, version 2010. The cocktail of lies, betrayals, sex and drugs doesn’t look a day older! Cartier’s Ark A sparkling bestiary

A veritable zoological gallery, the history of Cartier is littered with animals, both domesticated and wild. A colourful menagerie which sometimes seems like a cabinet of curiosities where you run into owls and eagles, penguins and herons and of course the trademark panther. Get ready for a sparkling safari of jewels! By Nicolas Berger.

The animal theme crops up throughout the history of Cartier in the form of small hardstone sculptures. These decorative objects were first dreamed up by Louis Cartier who wanted to interpret the world of precious miniatures created by Fabergé at the beginning of the twentieth century. The beauty of birds inspired him as he admired a winged procession of ibis, owls and swans from which he was almost inseparable although he did abandon them occasionally for less gracious creatures such as pigs and mice. Little matter; they were in pink quartz or white agate and there is a certain poetry in seeking to pay homage to nature as authentically as possible whatever the subject. The same applied to the mini bulldogs with their flattened muzzles, their staring eyes and pricked ears which are so surprising it is difficult to say whether they are beautiful or ugly. Strange and endearing creatures that the Duke of Windsor was so fond of he requested a gold and enamel one mounted on a pin. A striking replica of a head underlined by a black enamel collar interspersed with red, blue, green and white enamel hearts. The animal, a new vocabulary for the jeweller Animals have their own language and Cartier knows better than any how to use the animal metaphor when it comes to speaking of love, war or peace. Perched side by side, the diamond and platinum budgerigars form a pair united for eternity. But positioned behind or in front of the bars of a cage, they evoke the idea alternatively that France is occupied and then liberated. Throughout the work of the jeweller, animals are there to remind us of life. Cartier fluctuated between his passion for form, abstraction and geometry, and the animal kingdom through which he navigated with humour at the height of the 1920s. A pleasant meander which allowed this cigarette case designed with rigorous

minimalism in onyx and brushed gold to include an alligator perched on a rock preparing to swallow a black moon. The inspiration came from Japanese netsuke carvings. Surrealist compositions included this owl’s head, which looks surprised to find itself transformed into the clasp of a handbag. It was an unexpected fate for the animal, just as for this adorable ladybird that we find quietly resting on a cigarette lighter. The panther, symbol of triumphant femininity The animal theme was everywhere, present in form or spirit, when in 1914 it inspired the first panther motif. The jeweller evoked the fascinating beast by fully playing on the contrast of black and white by juxtaposing patches of onyx and brillants. At the time few were aware that Louis Cartier’s design was inspired by his colleague, Jeanne Toussaint, nicknamed “La Panthère”. The enlightened muse of the jeweller, a lady of taste with her boyish hair, long strings of pearls and a cigarette holder held high, had a passion for the most feminine of the big cats. She wasn’t to be the only one. The Duchess of Windsor and Barbara Hutton loved the tigers or panthers that they commissioned – a lorgnette supported by a tiger for one, and a brooch and pair of drop earrings in yellow gold, onyx and emerald eyes representing a tiger for the other. Fully articulated, these cats could move their heads, bodies and paws. The illusion was perfect and people could barely tear their eyes away from the incredible carnivores, they appeared so real. It was at the zoo at Vincennes that Jeanne Toussaint, aided by the designer Peter Lemarchand, observed the cats, recreating the theme with powerful realism. The animal was to be found in every position - crouching, standing, lying down, leaping – tamed yet still wild like the crocodiles of María Félix, the Mexican star who, according to legend, went as far as to bring a live crocodile

into Cartier’s workshops so that the jeweller could make an exact copy. Admittedly the animal was still a baby but it was just waiting to grow! The French actress Jacqueline Delubac meanwhile caused quite a stir with her appearance at the Proust Ball given by the Rothschilds in 1972 when she turned up as the living incarnation of a Magritte painting. On her face, a painted apple and on her shoulder a sparkling surreal diamond lizard ordered from Cartier. An extravagance with which Cartier was quite familiar, as can be seen by this brooch created in the 1940s. Animal and Mineral … Cartier, building new links. Not all women shared this all-consuming passion for the predators with which critics were quick to associate them. Some more delicate ones, like the French actress Josette Day, the radiant heroine of

Jean Cocteau’s film, Beauty and the Beast, chose the graceful lizard or the harmless unfurling of a butterfly. This elegant insect, recreated in coral and black enamel set off with emeralds, flies away only to settle again as a winged brooch on the lapel of a tailored new-look jacket. And there were to be many others, like this dragonfly whose articulated wings quiver! The brilliants give transparency; the cabuchon-cut rubies gaze out from the depths of the protruding, staring eyes of this fascinating insect. It provides Cartier with the material it needs to capture the world in flight. A world in which new links are built between animal and mineral. Stones and metals offer the same colours, crystalline or opaque, shiny or matt, as those found in the animal kingdom. Any one with doubts need only look at Cartier’s owl

with its citrine body - a hard, autumn-yellow stone – or the grey platinum rhinoceros, this eagle carved from gold or, in a modern collection, this platinum giraffe studded with brillants and onyx. Air, water and earth continue to enchant the jeweller today. Whether swimming in the wake of fish, walking in the footsteps of the tortoise or flying amid the rustling feathers of a parrot, it is always with the same keen curiosity – that of the author of an original, tender jewellery legend.

Wild Beast

Born in Australia, Hugh Jackman has managed to become one of the most sought after actors on the planet. A fearless but not faultless hero from the X Men trilogy, his character, Wolverine made him an international name. He recently made the beautiful Nicole Kidman swoon in the sentimental epic Australia by Buz Luhrmann. An interview with someone who’s all man! Interview by Jean-Pascal Grosso

How did you end up incarnating Wolverine, one of the most brutal and tortured characters of American comic strips? A little by accident to tell the truth! The actor they had chosen was tied up with another project so the production finally picked me less than a month before we started shooting. To be honest I didn’t know anything about the X-Men, and even less about the world of super-heroes. As a kid I watched Superman cartoons but I got bored of them quite quickly. So I made do with just reading the screenplay and I thought it was great. Wolverine was one of the main characters in the film. I was 30 at the time and I wanted to prove what I was capable of. This role made me known the world over. I know I owe it so much.

70

As a father yourself, is it difficult to juggle your career and your private life? You have to be realistic. Yes, it can be difficult. But once you finally make the breakthrough, the profession of actor can quickly give you quite a comfortable one life. I have worked a lot over the last few years, but it’s afforded me the leisure of taking several weeks off on holiday with my family. And I spend my week-ends with my wife and children. The hardest part is when you are on location, filming abroad. That’s why I travel as much as possible with them. The situation is even more complicated for my wife. She’s an actor too and has to juggle her career, my shoots and our children!

How did your children react when they saw their dad made up as a super-hero? My son has a Wolverine figure. He pulls its head off for fun! There’s another toy that I like a lot; the Wolverine punching bag. What child doesn’t dream of being able to knock a punching bag in the effigy of his own father?! (Laughs)

Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Eric Bana, Hugh Jackman... It seems Hollywood is more and more appreciative of actors from Australia doesn’t it? It’s doubtless because we accept a smaller pay cheque! (Laughs) It’s true there are a lot of Australian actors in Hollywood. You know for us there isn’t all that much work back home. That’s why we prefer to go to America to get into the business. And I have to say for my part, I was pretty well received!

What feelings do you have of your father? He is quite strict but knows how to loosen up from time to time. He’s the one who gave me my independent streak. My mother decided to go her own way when I was eight years old and he did his best to give me the best upbringing possible. He’s an extraordinary man even if I do occasionally regret not being brought up by both my parents.

Jean-Claude Jitrois, you took a great leap from physical therapy into fashion in 1976. How did that happen? As we say in French, we must all do humanities. I did it and then turned to psychology, studying at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, where I met eminent professors involved in psychiatry such as Léon Michaud, who was one of my teachers. From physical therapy with children aged up to two-years-old, in reference to the extraordinary book by Professor Julian de Ajuriaguerra, I took a first step in working on role-play with children who wet their bed or who stammered or who showed behavioural problems. At first, through passive observation, I learned to discover the body and its infraverbal language. Because our only way of being in the world is our body, which has its own language that I decoded bit by bit. I was also lucky enough to attend a seminar by Jacques Lacan around 1968, a troubled time when there was a wide permissiveness in education, particularly at the Fresnay de Vence School. The slogan of the time from the Sorbonne was: “Forbidding is forbidden.”

Jean-Claude Jitrois An icon of leather.

From Gong Li to Beyoncé via Liz Hurley, Jean-Claude Jitrois has made it to become one of the most sought-after designers on the planet. The Prince of Stretch Leather shot by Newton and Mondino, his easily identifiable style has made him renowned the world over. Lately the pop star Lady Gaga has been spotted in his sumptuous couture leather creations. A Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur and of the Odre National du Mérite, this opera-lover drifts between the golden panelled palaces of France and the splendour of Hollywood. We caught up with this intellectual connoisseur where the paintings of Soulages look down on precious consoles of the 18th century, and the view of the Tuileries is breath-taking. Roll tape.

As an army child, where were you educated? From a very early age I travelled a lot and discovered different countries in Europe and up to the threshold of the Orient depending on where my father, an officer in the Air Force, was posted. I studied at the Mauricière Lycée at Oran at the same time as Yves Saint Laurent. I was in sixth grade and he was in his final year. It’s funny; you could say this childhood encouraged happy encounters. All this travelling taught me a lot regarding relationships with other, not to be afraid of contact. Look, listen and learn – military life is a good life school. It forms your limits of the possible. What is important is to know ones limits and recognise the possibilities we all have. You also learn to make yourself respected and to respect others. Nonetheless, people always retain just one thing about the army life – discipline. But fun and happy times exist as well. I think that is also part of my character: work hard to play even harder! Why did you chose leather rather than say organza?! Leather is a favourite material for me. My father wore his leather jacket, covered in medals. I wasn’t allowed to play with it so, to break the rule, whenever I was left alone I played with the jacket, with his cap and with his Air Force Officers of the Salons de Provence dagger. I played at being an aviator and I loved it! Other than that I can tell you people don’t throw out their leather jacket or their leather trousers! They are usually items people hang on to, because everything is written in that leather jacket.

What is your favourite animal? My favourite animal is a Chihuahua, called Traviata because I love the opera. If you had to chose, would you pick the Elysée Palace or Andy Warhol’s Factory?! The Factory takes me back to the 80s when I met Andy Warhol at Studio 54 in New York. There were very elegant and interesting people there: cultivated but at the same time a little crazy, dynamic and extravagant. Every one of them bordered on genius for a few moments. But all that wouldn’t make me renounce the Palaces of the Republic where I have been received many times. They are all filled with such a rich history, and the tenants that I have been lucky enough to meet have all had an exceptional aura. Given the current economic crisis, what do you think of the eighties revival? Fashion goes out of fashion very quickly and then comes back like a boomerang when you least expect it. As I learned at school, there is an acceleration in history. And today the economic crises or the epidemics are strong, but they start and stop at high speed. It is The Eternal Return (a film by Jean Cocteau). Our House fits a niche market which means we can make it through the crisis without too much difficulty unlike large groups. Our more confidential structure can adapt itself rapidly to meet the needs of our loyal customers through our workshops in Paris. After Sarah Marshall, the pop star Lady Gaga seems to be the “new Jitrois icon”. How did you meet her? Sarah Marshall is the world ambassador for the Jitrois House. We have been working together for more than 15 years. It’s a real double act. We don’t need to talk to each other to communicate. We speak an “intraverbal” language! Lady Gaga had heard of me and vice versa. We finally met in the small hours in a Parisian hotel. She had just got back from a show in Amsterdam. We got on well immediately; it was magical moment. And I knew straight away how to show her figure off to its best because she helped me understand. She takes the item of clothing and grabs the opportunity to twists it to suit the occasion. She is as extravagant about town as on stage. At 23-years-old she does exactly as she pleases and she plays the piano divinely well. Her last visit to the Olympia in July 2009 was a real triumph. The audience went wild. Pascal Nègre, Hélène Von Unwerth, Marc Jacobs and a crowd of young people “set the place on fire” as Johnny Halliday would say for more that two hours!

You have a very recognisable style. How do you manage to remain independent in 2010? My style is leather, and, as Paul Valéry said, “nothing is deeper than skin”. If I am still independent after more than 30 years, it is despite many tempting offers. I always try to avoid the sin of pride. I didn’t want to sell my soul to just anybody. I wanted to keep my independence and, above all, keep around me people to whom I could pass on my know-how. He who wants to travel far should put away his watch. What has been the greatest experience in all this years of career? It is to have dressed and followed Johnny at the Bercy and at the Parc des Princes, and to have been Laetitia’s witness at their wedding when they were married by Nicolas Sarkozy at Neuilly town hall. I love stories that last! And the worst? Those you cannot control. I signed a contract for a perfume with a very big Kuwaiti company. Everything was ready to go and then, on August 2, Kuwait was invaded. Casus Belli, the contract was broken. But as the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! What is your favourite hotel when you are travelling? Every year I go to the Belvédère on Mykonos. That is where I recharge my batteries. And in Paris, when I have parties in my apartments, I go to Hotel Costes, just a couple of steps from my place. Your scent? Straight to Heaven by Kilian. Your author? Mainly women: Marguerite Yourcenar, Virginia Woolf, Christine Angot. Your last impulse buy? Two washing machines. What animal could represent you? It would be a vegetable animal! An olive tree. Do you prefer your lovers to be sexy or intellectual? I prefer them sexy in bed and intellectual about town. Your plans? Work hard, to play harder!

What does the universe of cigars mean to you? A purpose in pleasure. The cigar is a culture and is part of a certain art of living, devoted to refinement. I also think one must have reached a certain maturity in order to understand and savour a good cigar. The universe of the cigar is also becoming more feminine, just like that of wine. Recently we created a new collection especially designed for women called “Pink Precioso”, whose volute is scented with mocha and toast and then develops towards more spicy tones with a deliciously musky harmony! Ladies in Switzerland are crazy about them and so are the women of New York.

Gilles

Botquin

Maestro of the cigar Elegant and daring, the atypical El Septimo collections stand out from the crowd. The Plexiglas packaging with its creative graphic design also breaks from tradition. Just like his much-treasured cigars, their creator Gilles Botquin, a charming epicurean with a Paul Newman look about him, has made a place for himself among the guerilleros of this ruthless universe bathed in mystery. This maestro of cigars started his career at the end of the Cuban Davidoff era. We caught up with him between trips to Costa Rica. Roll tape El Septimo.

How would you define a good cigar? Through its strength and its aroma. You should not have to wait until you have half smoked the cigar to find out whether it is a quality one or not! The aromatic palette should be present from the beginning until the end and there should be constant surprises. This is what I look for in the creation and development of my own products. Which are your favourite numbers? I like a “fulfilling” smoke. My favourites are, without doubt, the Triple Robustos which have a high density of tobacco and consequently a very rich smoke. But I leave it up to enthusiasts to discover their favourite because we have something for everyone. The new “Wild and Green” collection is made up of two new numbers created in accordance with the current restriction on tobacco. Xtrem Shot and Small Impact have a combustion time of 20 to 30 minutes and immediately reveal the richness of their blend. I was a great lover of Havanas and have done a lot for the Cuban cigar. But the quality has been deteriorating for several years and I have changed direction, much to the benefit of the creative adventure that is El Septimo.

What do your customers expect from you? Our clientele travel a lot and what they want from a good cigar is, above all, to enjoy it. They recognise and appreciate a serious approach, a guarantee of quality. You cannot create a brand of tobacco with “small change” without wanting to sound condescending. In fashion, you don’t produce an Haute Couture collection without craftsmen working with quality materials. Our company is in line with this luxury approach. The selection of the tobacco leaves is rigorous and nothing is left to chance in the quest for perfect quality. Only eight rollers are allowed to work on the production of our El Septimo collections. Is there any particular bar or cigar club you regularly visit in Paris? Unfortunately there are no longer any permanent spots where one can relax and smoke a good cigar. Maybe in the future there will be a place for these, like the many that exist in the United States but patience … What is your opinion on the current legislation in France and in Switzerland concerning cigar smokers? To a certain extent, I am not against stopping “wild” smoking! Those who embrace the cigar culture will smoke at home and will always seek out this exceptional pleasure!

When you travel, what is your favourite hotel? The “Four Seasons” in Costa Rica as well as “El Jardin del Eden”, a marvellous boutique hotel immersed in nature. They haven’t touched a single tree, out of which sometimes appear monkeys, lizards and multi-coloured parrots. It is a paradisiacal spot in a very beautiful country that remains little-known by Europeans. As far as cars are concerned are you more Ferrari or Aston Martin? Aston Martin ! What are El Septimo’s plans for 2010? There are plans to take part in a few epicurean evenings but nothing concrete yet. Laure Delvigo

www.septimocigars.com Available in Switzerland, Belgium and in Duty-Free.

Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, do you have a favourite country? My experience tells me that no land prevails in being the best. By far the most interesting tools I find for creating special cigars are the combining and assembling of tobaccos from a myriad of different lands such as Ecuador or Costa Rica from where most of our production comes. Where does El Septimo position itself between the limited edition Cubans and the new American brands? We oversee the production of around 250,000 cigars per year. All our collections are vintages and require a maturation time of a year. Furthermore, our collections are inspired by the current trends, a perfect blend of innovation and tradition. It has become a rare thing indeed to be able to savour a cigar for a couple of hours or more after a meal! That is why we have created our two little numbers whose main characteristic is their explosivity.

The Lodge style Luxury in Nature’s bosom

Lodges are a bit like life-size travel logs. Full of charm but not overly-sophisticated, fabulous but not flashy, the “Lodge” seems to be the perfect response to the eco-tourism trend. Thatched roofs lost amid the greenery of palm trees, precious woods, crisp cotton bed linen, simple furniture and antiques fill special retreats in total harmony with nature and respectful of the surrounding environment. Luxury in Nature’s bosom.

Royal Palm, Island of Mauritius

When you head for the other side of the world, a change of scene and a few wonders are a must. Yes but, here’s the thing. The hotel must also be comfortable, intimate, practical, well-situated, charming, quiet, cosy and spacious. The list is long! Nevertheless, some stand out from the crowd. Even better; they become the principal criteria for the destination. On the island of Mauritius for example, the Royal Palm doesn’t rest on its beautiful beaches of fine sand. Quite the opposite. This gem of a lodge is a heavenly spot. The most prestigious address on Mauritius places the emphasis on well-being and refinement. Without disturbing the existing coun122

tryside, this luxury hotel shows a marked taste for traditional décor in local colours, while maintaining stunningly luxurious standards. Comfort (84 suites), choice (three restaurants) and services (spa by Clarins), without doubt this fashionable lodge has made a place for itself in the heart of the Indian Ocean. On the Indonesian side, Blush has discovered the Amandari for you. You really should try to make it here this winter. Aside from the amazing recreations in authentic Balinese style (a spa cradled in a lotus pond) and the open air lobby decked in teak and coconut wood, Amandari is celebrating its 20th

birthday! The festivities will be100% Balinese: traditional dances, exhibitions of photography and of local craftsmanship such as textiles, paintings and sculptures, the chance to meet well-known literary figures and much more. An eclectic programme, revealing the richness of Bali’s artistic and cultural heritage. And if you feel like simply lazing around, you simply have to take yourself off to one of the sumptuous suites or wander through Amandari’s dreamy gardens before sitting back and contemplating the exceptional environment!

Cape Town, One & Only

On another continent the current hot spot is Cape Town. The recently inaugurated One & Only in South Africa is certainly the best representation of the definitive lodge hotel in its purest form. The most incredible urban resort on the African continent offers from its seventh and uppermost floor the best view of the town’s marina. Decorated in a contemporary style, the hotel fuses modernity with South African culture. In effect, tradition and innovation are brought together perfectly in this architectural jewel. Some 78 rooms and 53 suites, each as sumptuous as the next, overlook the swimming pool which outstrips an Olympic one in size; 350m²!

And that extra something – a private islet devoted exclusively to the well-being of the clientele. If you have already fallen for South Africa, no problem. Lodges, luxury version, have also been making moves in Asia with, as their ambassador, the Gallery Hotel. Devotees of post-modern art will simply adore this luxury hotel in the style of a Chinese puzzle. Just a few blocks from the most popular districts of Singapore, even its façade is a combination of incongruous shapes and cubes. The hotel is the king of this urban jungle. And, as a lion hunts its prey, so the hotel has gathered a world of native modern

art in each room in a way that will delight eclectic visitors as much as cosmopolitan jet-setters. But be aware, the Gallery Hotel is first and foremost a hotel. The works of art, carefully lit within the décor, are more than matched by the undisputable service and comfort offered by the establishment. And the status of this minimalist, original and refined lodge is only further confirmed by the high-rise swimming pool.

And to round off our lodge tour, a newcomer: the eco-friendly fashion lodge. It is in the Seychelles that you will find Denis Island a private island just a few breast strokes from a coral reef. First off, an island with a kaleidoscope of colours just for you. Nicknamed “the island of happy people the colonial chic style hotel will delight those addicted to water sports such as canoeing and diving as well as those who prefer more leisurely activities like fishing and relaxing. With the coral reef so close, the

protection of the local flora and fauna has to be a priority. From truly organic cuisine to 100% natural materials, the islet seems to have escaped the human footprint. It is perfect for eco-tourists, nature lovers and people of taste in search of tranquillity. The Denis Island resort proves that combining luxury with respect for the environment can be simple.

Dream houses, spectacular countryside and unique experiences from Marrakesh to Courchevel for a winter on the latitude of luxury. By Laure Delvigo

LA MAMOUNIA in Maroco

After a three-year-long renovation, this legendary palace where some of the best known international media personalities have stayed continues its quest for the wonderful. On the decor side, the famous designer, Jacques Garcia, who knows and loves La Mamounia, has created an atmosphere hovering between magic and mystery, mixing the essence of the Marrakesh tradition with a contemporary lifestyle. While the Zellige mosaics and the sculpted white plaster are a perfect reflection of the Madrasah (the most ancient Koranic school of Marrakesh dating from the 16th century) the extreme comfort, the high-tech equipment and the attention to detail, ensure La Mamounia is a thoroughly contemporary establishment. With 2,500 m2 dedicated to the spa, wellbeing is the buzzword for a successful stay. A unique experience bringing together the strict requirements of an international luxury hotel and the gentleness of living in Marrakesh. L’AMANGANI in USA

A “house of peace” perched at an altitude of 2,135 metres with a panoramic view of the Wyoming mountain chain, Amangani is a spectacular hotel immersed in an amazing natural location. For its first resort in the United States, Amanresorts entrusted the interior design to architect, Ed Tuttle who has made Amangani a reference in western American architectural style. A building in which great columns of Oklahoma sandstone rise, with walls of red wood from the Pacific, rattan chairs and rugs of hide. A unique place marrying refinement and contemporary comfort with the fascinating beauty of this well-preserved natural paradise. If you are looking to pamper yourself, mind and body, then Amangani has a highly recommended spa with steam rooms and four treatment rooms where you can indulge in massages, facials and personalised treatments. We loved the 35-metre heated swimming pool and the whirlpool, ideal for relaxing after dog-sledding or a wild safari on cross-country skis! A multi-facetted location, the Amangani promises an exceptional stay and a real change of scene. Free phone from France, Belgium and Switzerland: 00 800 2255 2626. www.amanresorts.com

LE STRATO in France

“Make them love the mountain passionately and combine skiing with comfort” is one of the mottos of the Laurent Boix Vives family whose name is closely tied to the history of Courchevel. The word Strato is firstly a reference to a type of ski. Developed some time ago by Laurent Boix Vives, then head of Rossignol, the Strato was used by the greatest skiers including Jean-Claude Killy. If excellence and innovation are the characteristics of the Strato, the same values can be found in the hotel, the latest chic address at Courchevel 1850. Decorated by Les Héritiers, interior designers whose elegance is apparent on every floor, Le Strato combines the service of a luxury hotel with the intimacy of a family home. Noble materials, soft lighting and warm colours blend gently with light wood, while a few vintage photographs, family items and portraits look down on retro armchairs and mink-style cushions. After a day’s skiing, you will appreciate the subtlety of the Provencal and spicy flavours brought together by Jean-André Charial of the Oustau de Baumanière, the Michelin Two Star restaurant, accompanied by Sylvestre and Jonathan Wahid, whose extraordinary patisseries leave us speechless! Conceived in a resolutely contemporary spirit, Le Strato also has a Nuxe spa where the modellages are a moment of pure hedonism. A warm welcome, tasteful décor, top cuisine and a dream spa; Le Strato is a touch of Manhattan at the foot of the slopes! LE BELLECHASSE in Paris

In the heart of Faubourg Saint-Germain, whose aristocratic elegances inspired Proust, opulent home to great antiquarians and the Musée d’Orsay opposite the Louvre, and official home to ministers and the Chamber of Deputies, the Quai d’Orsay and embassies, nestles a gorgeous town house dressed by Christian Lacroix. A real haute couture box of jewels loved by aficionados and travels. Like the designer, it has a larger than life personality: 34 personalised rooms where patterns, images, colours and materials take from both neo-classicism and bohemian styles. Playing with a palette of moods and influences, maintaining a knowing balance between daring and tradition, Christian Lacroix has created seven universes through the rooms: Patchwork, Avengers, SaintGermain, Tuileries, Musketeers, Real Tennis and Quai d’Orsay below, where Baroque inspiration and Parisian chic are brilliantly combined. MON HOTEL in Paris

My story … is very sweet. A lover of modern art, design and hotels was offered this establishment while on his return from a trip to Argentina. While the purchase of the hotel may be said to have been down to chance, its transformation is more to do with his story. No more girls from Le Daniels club with their one night stands. Farewell to the little hotel which had known the novelist Patrick Modiano, when he felt the world fainting away through the anonymous shadows of couples slipping along corridors and through rooms. Mon Hotel pays due respect to its notorious past by associating it with up-to-date comfort and modernity. As far as the decor goes, the lucky owner has preserved the hotel’s façade and gloss black window frames, its retro neon lights and its “peephole” windows. Inside, Mon Resto restaurant is now very trendy. Here you will bump into businessmen and women and celebrities seated on elegant purple velvet armchairs. We love the huge bar whose mirrors reflect the great crystal chandeliers. Service is attentive and the welcome warm and discreet. Here you dare to stop, rest and relax. RADISSON BLU METROPOLITAN Just a step or two from the Trocadero, it would not be pretentious for this brand new top class establishment from the Rezidor Group, to compare itself with a luxury hotel. In fact, in this former Haussmann-style private residence the famous designer François Champsaur lays out an architectural path based on several strong lines: the idea of a progression, a reflection on opposing materials and a play on the relationship of scale. In the restaurant, one finds oneself in a timeless space, made even better by the subtle assembly of perspective, reflection and transparency. As for the “Eiffel” suite, its “bull’s-eye” window, which can’t help but bring to mind the legendary House of Dior, overlooks one of the most beautiful monuments in Paris. Aside from its cosy spa, there is also a very pleasant bar, a place of contrasts ideal for unwinding after a packed day. Society figures will happily give in to a cocktail prepared by the highly skilled barman Alain Duquesne, formerly of The Ritz, the Ledoyen restaurant and the Hotel Georges V among others. Here the welcome aims to be polite and attentive. “A Parisian pied-à-terre in intimate surroundings for a discreet and elegant clientele who expect individual but restrained service,” explains Alexandre Fougerole, General Director of this lovely hotel where sophisticated luxury is wonderfully present in every detail. 10 Place de Mexico 75006 Paris Phone: 33 (0)1 56 90 40 04 www.radissonblu.com 128

The Grand Ribe Domaine A passion for wine par excellence.

It started out as a family vineyard. Today Isabel and Jean-Claude Fromont, renowned for their Chablis N°1 in Denmark and N°2 in the USA, are investing as much energy into the Grand Ribe Domaine as they can. A look at this French success story with Isabel Fromont, a woman with the same character as her wines; elegant and sparkling. By Laure Delvigo Photos Nicolas Rodet

134

Isabel Fromont, how did you get started in the world of wine? Through my family which is from the world of wine, Burgundy, Gevrey Chambertin to be more precise where my grandparents and my uncles had vineyards. During the holidays I often went to help harvest the grapes but my father worked for the Culture Ministry. It was during my professional training that I specialised in wine, having attended a hostelry college before training as a sommelier and then studying technique and marketing. Together with your husband, Jean-Claude, you run Maison Fromont and the Grand Ribe Domaine, two very different estates. Can you give us a brief account of how you reached this point? After his viticulture studies at Beaunes, JeanClaude set himself up and launched his business in the “golden years” of Chablis. He started with six hectares and now has 17. Back problems forced him to give up working in the vineyard but didn’t

diminish his passion for wine! After six months of “forced retirement” he was dying of boredom and so, in 1992, he set up as a wine merchant. After that things moved very fast! We got engaged in 1993 then married in 1994 before starting a business together, distinct from vine management. Jean-Claude also had a business providing wine harvesting and vine treating services for producers in Chablis. After that we invested enormously and then developed Maison Fromont. First stocked in supermarkets, Jean-Claude was no longer really involved in the wines but almost solely in management. That is why he decided to get back to basics, reorganise his activities towards the technical side, still in trading but with his own personal selection of domaines. In this way, Jean-Claude can control the harvest, his contribution and the selection of the grapes through a qualitative work which he pushes to the extreme because he is really keen on technique! It means a Chablis is like a Chablis; the wine has its own typicity and retains its intrinsic qualities. Jean-Clause

chisels his wines like a sculpture. He is close to the appellations and their respective domaines. Each detail is important. What to you think is the secret to a good wine? Balance. Look for the fruit. If you manage to find it, it will give you huge pleasure and you will discover aromas you could never have imagined! Never think of wine as a drink; understand its history, the team work put in so it could be enjoyed. The love and the passion!

life style

life style

What do you think of the organic era? All our cuvées are 100% organic. They have to be. We have to be more honest with out land, more respectful. They need to be able to live alone. And another thing, yield rules aren’t those of Nature! How do you feel about selling wines on the internet? This really is a very interesting development. As a Domaine, it is much the same as mail order. For the Grande Ribe, it’s the next step. Given the regulations concerning wine, there is little danger of ending up with a ‘forgery’. There is a certain security in it. You buy a wine corresponding to the Domaine on the website. Number 1 in Denmark and Number 2 in the United States with your Chablis, do you export a great deal? Which of your clients are the greatest connoisseurs? The British, without doubt! The know us well and wont let us get away with anything! These are clients who drink wine and appreciate it for what it is. Their capacity for analysing it forces us question ourselves which is essential if you want to progress and produce good vintages.

What is the flagship product of the Grand Ribe Domaine? Undoubtedly the Côtes du Rhône Village. The “white” version is silky, rich and balanced. Its fine development has won over many people, be they novices or experts! You also have a merchants’ business. How does that work? As merchants we work with wine-growers who agree with our approach. Jean-Claude wants distinctive products for Maison Fromont, where each grape is treated according to its type. The first role of the merchant is to not mix the vintages. To be able to represent the maximum taste so as to win over an eclectic client base as much on an international as on a French level. From wine sellers to supermarkets, where 60% of clients are women, an important factor! How do you select your grape? Certain vintages appeal to a certain type of client and others don’t. Every day we ask ourselves: “Which plot is ripe which grape variety should we bring together?” And all the while we have to bear in mind the rules of appellation, so that our wines will have the AOC (controlled term of origin) label. From the moment of harvest we have to look ahead to the product that will reach maturity and be representative of the domaine.

136

Has wine enabled you to meet interesting people? My husband! At the time, Jean-Claude was looking for a wine-producing domaine. It’s quite funny when you think about it! Through our travels, we meet some extraordinary wine waiters, passionate about wine, who gave us their opinion of our business. It is very enriching. In the Seychelles we tasted some lovely wines thanks to a wine waiter who was really enthusiastic. I also remember a French oenologist in the USA who almost attacked champagne! He gave us his fairly liberated vision of French wines. My husband and I approach the foreign market in a different way from the traditional market which is still very present in France. What differences have you noticed between the French and foreign markets? We have to understand the foreign client. Sometimes our international clients can criticize us for a certain type of complexity. However they want French wine and they are passionate about it. You have to know how to keep things simple! In France we have a considerable art of living but it does restrict us a little. Perhaps this is why I am a fan of primitive and modern art. When I go to New York I visit the MOMA and have an extraordinary time there! I really value the liberated regard foreigners bring to art. This international melting-pot which is now going on in the art of living makes us evolve and stops us being weighed down by our past which, although undeniably rich, can be a little heavy to bear.

What wine would you say resembles you? My rosé! Fruity, sparkling and greedy! Sainte Cécile is one of the leading rosé communes in the Côtes du Rhône, whose typicity contrasts strongly with the rosés of Provence. Its colour comes from a sunny region. Also, the Côtes du Rhône rosés come from a trilogy of flavours: Grenache - St Scaut – Syrah. That’s what gives the rosé such a particular intensity. What do you think of the increasing role women are occupying in the world of wine, and in buying wine? Here, I’m going to get a little feminist! There have always been women behind wine – now they are coming out in front! They bring a feminine touch; they put their hearts and flamboyancy into wine. Women tend to be less involved in the technical side. I cannot but encourage them. They should carry one, keep training up and keep tasting wine! How do you explain the fashion for wine bars? My dream is to open a wine bar that would also serve organic food. The interaction with clients is really lovely. You enjoy a pleasant moment around a bottle of wine.

You are a very active woman. How do you manage to combine work and your private life? As long as you are passionate about what you do, daily life gets easier! On the family front, my role is to guide and advise my two daughters. Jean-Claude and I would like to pass on to them the desire to go all the way with something because you don’t get something for nothing! In the morning I open my eyes. Whether its is a nice day or not, I can work outside and I am incredibly lucky to have a job I can arrange as I want. What projects does La Grand Ribe have for 2010? We are lucky enough to have had an exceptional year, with the Côtes du Rhônes reaching full maturity. It is pure pleasure to work on vintages under those conditions. On top of that, we are developing marketing for the export of La Grand Ribe especially to the west coast of the United States. Last September we also inaugurated our cellar so that we can share our passion for wine with everyone. www.grandribe.com Domaine de La Grand’Ribe Haute Provence, Sainte Cécile les Vignes – France Tél : +33 490 308 375

Between two hemispheres The sale of the Charles Sévigny – Yves Vidal collection on October 22 enabled Paris to relive the history of decoration from the post-war period to the 1970s. Among the many lots on sale it was a delight to rediscover the Harry Bertoïa bronzes.

The unique styles of Charles Sévignyand Yves Vidal exercised a substantial influence over interior designers for decades. Yves was renowned for his effectiveness as the head of Knoll International in France and Charles, more discreet, was to develop his own sense of colour, and a command of light and space. Throughout their years, the pair amassed an important, refined and sensitive collection. For them, the art of choosing and placing objects held a very important place. The fusion of styles, an art they had very much mastered, allowed for an audacious association of classical furniture and contemporary creations. The entire collection, comprising some 300 lots, was estimated at around one million euros with profits going to the Pasteur Institute. Their style, their juxtaposition of eras, is particularly well illustrated in the main salon of the Quai d’Orsay apartment, with works coming from their York Castle residence in Tangiers and from the Moulin des Corbeaux, east of Paris. The very eclectic collection knew how to combine objects of great diversity by associating modern art and design with classical furniture from the 18th century and Islamic art. Among the major pieces offered in the collection, we noted a group of sculptures by Harry Bertoïa (1915-1978), including Hanging hemisphere (see photo), estimated at between 150,000 and 200,000 euros, an aerial bronze work which displays all the talents of this designer who, let us not forget, was linked to Gropius, the founder of Bauhaus. A close friend of Charles Sévigny and Yves Vidal, Harry Bertoïa was himself produced by Knoll. Talent goes to talent.

Maison Deyrolle Or the den of delights

Despite a devastating fire in February 2008, the Maison Deyrolle, founded in 1831, continues to offer lovers of nature – and of the unusual – all sorts of strange collections. A den of delights where real beauty merges with surreal dreams. By Nicolas Berger.

140

There is something surprising, mysterious, almost magical, about the building itself. For more than 150 years, the Deyrolle gallery has been an obligatory stop for any self-respecting naturalist, entomologist or anatomist. But not just for them. In fact, with its animals which seem more alive than dead and its other peculiarities, Deyrolle attracts a wide spectrum of visitors. Painters such as Bernard Buffet, Mathieu, surrealists such as Dali or Breton, writers like Louise de Vilmorin or philosophers including Théodore Monod have all been regulars. You could almost say the building has something mythical about it; a cross between a museum of the imaginary and a vast cabinet of curiosities. Indeed, it is in the very spirit of these premises where curious travellers and Nature collectors accumulated all kinds of riches – that one can find at Deyrolle’s an astonishing mix of mineral collections, mounted ostrich eggs, precious objects or paintings, collages of butterfly wings, strange stuffed or naturalised birds, segmented insects mounted under glass globes as they were in the 19th century, osteological pieces, faunal antiquities and much more … And there are also unique pieces such as sea stars and spiders’ neural systems. While Deyrolle handed them out liberally in the past, they are now considered museum pieces.

It was in 1888 that the Deyrolle Company, under the management of the founder’s grandson, finally settled on the left bank in a town house built for the son of one of Louis XIV’s bankers. The clientele was never just one of enthusiasts or hunters. Deyrolle aimed above all at teachers. Other than scientific material (collections of minerals, shells, butterflies and insects, herbariums, microscopic slides and a number of specialised works) the company was soon supplying all the schools and universities in France with pedagogical boards and wall maps which would be used by generations of teachers to illustrate their lessons. In 2001, Prince Louis-Albert de Broglie became the new owner of Deyrolle. It is hardly surprising given how many Broglies have been scientists – one is even a Nobel Prize winner – and that the Prince is the creator of the “Prince Jardinier” store, now a byword for elegance in the art of the garden. On February 1, 2008 at 5am, a fire ravaged Deyrolle. Collections of millions of butterflies and rare insects and stuffed animals from the four corners of the world went up in smoke. Within short, the artists who came to Deyrolle seeking inspiration fed their imagination on black and smoking ruins, in drawers filled with now-caramelised insects, dioramas of broken glass, naturalised animals whose hair has been burnt and eyes melted by the blaze. Sophie

Calle, Nan Goldin, the Lalannes, Martin d’Orgeval and many others were to be the craftsman of a renaissance. In November 2008, a Christie’s auction of works saved from the disaster made almost 300,000 euros for the Fondation Deyrolle – set up for the occasion – to help meet the bills for the work involved. Last September the final damaged room, the famous entomology chamber whose antique cabinets packed with knowledge had been reduced to ashes, reopened. The master craftsmen from the Ateliers de la Chapelle had managed to replicate the furniture exactly. The glass drawers now house fabulous new collections of insects, carefully put together for our delight! In order that this tragic event should not be forgotten and as if in constant renewal, the Maison Deyrolle will host three or four artistic installations every year with the running theme being that of the observation of a “Fragile Nature” under threat by man’s lack of observation and knowledge. There is no humanity without beauty. Opening hours Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm. Galerie Deyrolle 46, rue du Bac 75007 Paris Tel: +33 (0)1 42 22 30 07

Michel Haillard The Noah of furniture

Michel Haillard is off the beaten track. This connoisseur handyman, exceptional sculptor, creator of ethnic and fantastical furniture has, by giving the Animal Kingdom pride of place, conjured up a sort of surprising Noah figure whose Ark is a work of art. A portrait of ant anti-conformist designer who, from his paved courtyard in Paris’s 11th district, masters the bizarre with panache. By Nicolas Berger.

142

Hybrid, fantasist and functional, the furniture conjured up by Michel Haillard is more comic-strip than monastic parlour. At 51 years old, the sculptor seems to have stepped out of the film “Out of Africa” with his extravagance, humour and happiness. Like a tribal chief, he fashions seats that look like African thrones. They are almost humorous reminders of the colonial period. After having tried the professions of cartoon artist and animated film director, Michel Haillard packed away his camera for the more prosaic tools of a sculptor. From thereon, his work was to consist of transforming objects from their original use. Very soon, his creative passion evolved towards furniture. Starting with an old piece of furniture, or a reproduction chosen for its generous curves, he would add miscellaneous elements picked up here and there because if the history they evoked in him. “I am drawn to things that have a past,” he explains. The result? A unique style, far from mass production with each piece bearing the name that suits it best: “Caligula”, “Monkey” and “Condor”. It is certainly a difficult style to define but one which lends itself to the idea that one has of tribal and ethnic art. Or at least one that one might have of the poetic décor of the Adventures of Tintin in the Congo. “All my creations are hallucinatory,” said the sculptor/designer. “But thanks to the materials that they are made of, they are all rooted in reality. My pieces of furniture are like zoomorphic creations, utilitarian sculptures on which one can sit down.” Thus, in his Parisian workshop, worktops and drawers overflow with gazelle and buffalo horns, snake and alligator skin, hippopotamuses’’ skulls, a warthog’s teeth, sawfish’s rostrums, swordfish’s tails, armadillo shells and other animal relics. A true cavern ‘Made in Zingawê’ of objects patiently collected from flea markets and, in particular, treasures abandoned by former colonialists now worried about ecology. Because - make no mistake about it - this gentle dreamer is no hunter in spirit and refuses to condone hunting. Furthermore, each piece comes with a certificate of origin certified by the Ministry for the Environment. “The Zingawê tribe has never and will never kill an animal. My aim is to work with things that have been abandoned. They are

almost ‘sub-items’ rather than a destruction and demolition company,” says Haillard who has always collected bizarre objects. And he continues: “When I was very young, from the age of 12, I started to seek out natural objects in bric-a-brac shops, on the long safaris I was made to go on every Sunday. And I collected these things for ages with the impression that something would happen sooner or later. And now the time has come! A few years ago I began making these Zingawê objects.” A little further away, Louis XV chairs stand next to wing chairs and battered divans, pot-bellied commodes, wooden, bronze and copper accessories, masks, oriental curiosities, parchment, billiard balls,

lace, string and raffia. All in glorious disorder. “There is an animal side to the way I work,” explains Haillard dressed in animal skin with necklaces of claws and corns. “This animal presence brings out instincts buried deep within us. Some may be shocked by it. But the aim isn’t to gratuitously provoke by creating a representation of death. I have my own limits as far as that goes.” For Michel Haillard, the animal is reincarnated in the object and so given a second life. It is as if, just like in a good script, each element, each piece of furniture assembled seems to have grown naturally. A barbaric stage set? No. More an unclassifiable and beautiful genre which borders on the unreal, the phantasmagoric and the baroque.

Home “Chez nous, Vivre ensemble à la maison. Inspiration et décoration” Text Anita Kaushal, photography Penny Wincer Aubanel, 30 euros

Calming, Luxurious and Voluptuous Taking our cue from Baudelaire, let’s leave aside the bustle of the world in favour of the luxury, calm and pleasure of works chosen entirely for your pleasure. Little matter whether in mind or spirit; drink it all in! By Nicolas Berger.

“Home” is a word that resonates deeply within us. For many, it evokes family, childhood, innumerable memories filled with emotion. The home is a precious place where we share the intimacy of family life with our nearest and dearest. It is a unique place where we like to recharge our batteries and create surroundings in which we and our families feel comfortable.

Walton Ford: Pancha Tantra

Published under the direction of Bill Buford Taschen 49.99 euros At first glance Walton Ford’s watercolours of animals – the theme of this book – could be mistaken for colonial paintings and illustrations from the 19th century. But each of these works has something strange about it: a turkey trampling on a small bird or a flight of angry pigeons hammering away at the branch of a tree. Although these paintings are filled with buffalo, lions, monkeys, snakes or other wild animals, it is the birds and their reptilian primitiveness that most fascinate

The publishers Diane de Selliers have reissued the work this year in their “La petite collection”. It brings together 110 Arab, Persian and Turkish poems from the Sixth to the Twentieth century. Illustrated with 180 miniatures and a dozen modern paintings, it praises the beauty and richness of these civilisations,

Versailles

Under the direction of Pierre Arizzoli-Clémentel Citadelles & Mazenod‫‏‬, 670 euros The Palace of Versailles is one of the most famous monuments in the world and never ceases to fascinate and arouse admiration. It is almost as if the history of art booked an appointment here to create one of the most fascinating expressions of French genius. Although there is an abundance of literature on Versailles - that building of a thousand facets - what was missing was a great work at once richly illustrated, complete and clear. Written by the greatest specialists on the subject, this book at last offers readers a panoramic vision of Versailles,

This is generally achieved by a suitable interior layout and careful decoration. Since children are at the very heart of daily family life, this books shows that it is possible to create a living space that is both attractive and secure where the needs of all are respected. Divided into four sections, the book looks at every room in the house; the living and playing areas, the rest areas such as the bedroom and bathroom, and the surroundings of the home including the garden and the garden shed! A beautiful album of inspiration and style wisely prefaced by Inès de la Fressange.

Ford. His work vibrates with an intensity and a mysterious familiarity. The confident style is reassuring, its content disturbing. His paintings transport the viewer into a world of dreams and nightmares with, in spite of this, a candour that almost belies the artist’s intentions. Brought together for the first time in this limited edition book, Ford’s bestiary takes its title from one of the texts he refers to repeatedly during his work: the Pancha Tantra, an ancient Indian book of animal fables considered a forefather to Aesop’s Fables. A universe to be discovered!

fluidity ensured through a notable taste for the asymmetric. This very clear penchant for poetry and fantasy continues to be displayed to this very day in the famous fairies seen on fine watches at the heart of this new book devoted to Van Cleef & Arpels. For several years now, the company has been attaching more and more importance to combining the highest technology in the art of watch making with the aesthetics of fine jewellery. For example, these dials that partially obscure the surface of the watch gradually reveal a pattern evoking the current season as they rotate imperceptibly. A luxurious and poetic way to watch time go by …

meals are served and some of the most elegant parties of the capital are organised. The residence’s reputation for excellence is due in large part to the culinary talents of its chef, Philippe Escoffier, who has been running the embassy kitchens for almost a decade. Prior to that he worked with Michelinstarred chefs such as Guy Martin and Alain Senderens. This cookbook explains how we can all dine like ambassadors and is a magnificent reference tool for the informed cook and those who love the Parisian lifestyle. So chic!

from its beginnings to the present day. It displays every aspect of the château: its history, architecture, paintings, sculptures, the garden design, the furniture and objects of art. Even the balls and ceremonies are included, restoring this edifice in all its complexity and splendour. Magnificently photographed by Marc Walter, Versailles can at last be seen in its mighty corridors as well as its private rooms. It fabulous interiors where marble and gold abound are covered in detail. In its ambitiousness and in its exceptional quality, this work pays a fitting homage to the palace of the “greatest King in the world”.

I tested

3 well-known clairvoyants… To know or not to know, that is the question… Given that my love life was rapidly becoming obsolete and faced with an uncertain future on the sentimental front, the answer was clear! In order to get a clear view of my romantic horizon, I consulted three clairvoyants. But rather than go down the old route of fortune-teller’s stall, I opted for the latest trend: clairvoyance by phone. Here are the results!

UUU

By Caroline Ajackirian

Why did I want to consult a clairvoyant?

Relations between my beloved and me had been somewhat frosty for quite a while but it was during an evening that could be described as eventful to say the least (a good old row just the way we like them) that I decided to walk out. So I packed my bag in the middle of the night and found myself … at a girlfriend’s. Of course once the initial anger, the insults and name-calling, had passed I discovered I was a little (OK very) vulnerable. “Now what? What will become of me? We’re not going to let one silly little argument ruin everything are we?” I looked very clever with my bag …

The clairvoyants I consulted

Too proud to call my lover but nonetheless determined to settle this ridiculous business of a breakup, I decided to seek the advice of experts on the subject (yes, yes) by consulting a fortune-teller/ astrologer/medium/clairvoyant. Whatever, I wasn’t not sure exactly how they worked but deep down, I didn’t really care. The only thing that mattered to me was that they should tell me whether or not my relationship would resume; yes or no. So I logged on to the site Wengo.fr through which I could choose and contact a multitude of rare (or not so rare) gems, specialists in the field. Cathy, Déborah or Virginie? They all had good reviews. Their clients appeared delighted. That’s it; I’m calling them. Long live crystal balls and tarot cards.

Their predictions

To start with (just going by feeling) I decided to call Cathy. She immediately homed in on the situation: distance, a separation. She also gave a very good description of my beloved – pinpointing his character in quite a troubling way. Cathy foretold a reconciliation within two weeks time, a trip in August (we were supposed to go to Rome but idiot that I am I had cancelled it) and a great protection over our couple with a glowing future (marriage, two children, the works). “Wow! That’s way more than I asked for!” I was over the moon but brought myself back down to earth quickly. “What if she’s lying? After all, it’s not like she knows everything!” My bank card was going to have a cardiac never mind: I was calling Déborah. I needed corroboration on Cathy’s thoughts… She turned out to be just as amazing as Cathy regarding her vision of my present. She immediately summed up my situation. “But how the devil do they do it?” Deborah also foresaw a reconciliation between us in the coming fortnight (YES) … followed by a difficult and definitive split after a few months. I was then supposed to meet a man about five years older than me with whom I would build a future … “Great, that really helps. That’s not at all what she was supposed to tell me! Huh!” Two clairvoyants with five star reputations and two contradictory opinions.

148

There was only one thing left to do: call a third, to settle the matter. So I phoned Virginie, an evidently very clairvoyant medium. Well, let’s see. Virginie also spotted the problem straight away. She spoke clearly of a great distance in my couple. She also spied a reconciliation in the coming weeks. She had a very sharp mind and did a lot of psychology. Perhaps too much. I quickly got the impression that aside from her undeniable qualities as a medium, Virginie played a lot on this strength. Be that as it may, her conclusions were the same as Cathy’s: a couple that starts over, a rebuilding, a marriage and two children. “But what does the public want?”

My advice

I remain very surprised by the perceptiveness and the listening ability of the three women I consulted. It was a little as if I had always known them. Each of them was able to see my current situation in great detail. As for the future … my dearest has returned after my calls. We did go on a trip. Will Cathy and Virginie be right? Or will our paths part once more as Déborah predicted? The irony of it is, only the future will tell!

What is your animal totem? The aim of Amerindian astrology and its Circle of Life is not to predict the future. This relatively unknown shamanic astrology seeks rather to give advice on how to live a better life and how to be at one with nature, especially with one’s nature. Find out more about your totem animal. By Nicolas Berger.

Born between March 21 and April 20, your animal totem is the Hawk. The hawk (or falcon) sees far and from a great height. It is through him that Providence arrives because it is both its eyes and claws when he kills his prey. Natives are instruments of destiny and their free-will is only evident when they have learned moderation. In fact, it is because of their impulsiveness that they are the instrument of Providence and it is through further reflection, and through the tempering of their instincts while taking others into consideration that they finally achieve true autonomy. Born between April 21 and May 21, your animal totem is the Beaver. On the plus side, the Beaver is a builder with true powers to really change his environment, the course of things and of life. His has the ability to transform ideas and desires into reality. He is a hard worker and it is amazing to see how an animal as small as him can substantially change his living space in just a matter of days. However, if he goes too far in trying to reshape Nature, he will end up monopolizing the riches of the world and thereby chance the subtle equilibrium of the Universe through his excessive desire to accumulate. Born between May 22 and June 21, your animal totem if the Deer. Deer are chatty and extrovert animals as can be seen with their grunting. They shout out their desires without the least modesty or discretion. The huge difference between the peaceful character of the female and the aggressive one of the male underlines the deer’s ambiguous, double character. The deer lives in a herd and is a deeply gregarious and sociable animal that only leaves the group to die. The fickle side of the animal is doubtless more on the ideological level (difficulty with sincere commitments and perseverance) than a sentimental one. Born between June 22 and July 22, your animal totem is the Woodpecker. The woodpecker is said to be an “indigenous” bird because it has inhabited the same regions for hundreds of years. It does not migrate – making it a good symbol of attachment to the homeland, faithfulness to the home, roots and

154

past. Note it nests between the end of April and July, which for a large part is the same period as its sign and the sign of Cancer. Its nests are solid (stability in the home), and they are often used for many years after by other birds such as the starling (hospitality). The role of the woodpecker seems very much to be that of maintaining, regenerating and sharing its native environment. Born between July 23 and August 23, your animal totem is the Salmon. The salmon is courageous, admirable and willingly sacrifices its own life for that of its children. But deep down does its motivation perhaps spring more from a fear of dying without assuring its genes will carry one, of dying leaving no trace? Here we hit the paradox whereby the Salmon goes to the absolute limit, quite literally gives its all, indeed dies just to prove it lived! And another thing – what is the strange obstinacy that consists of swimming back upstream to its own place of birth? Should we see in this an excessive, morbid attachment to its ancestors, bringing with it the dangers of immutability and stubbornness? Born between August 24 and September 23, your animal totem is the Bear. Excellently representing contradictory symbols, the bear is as much a ferocious beast as a gentle companion for children. So, a wild bear or a loveable one? The Amerindians see it as a level-headed creature, a happy medium precisely because bears have a rare faculty that has not escaped shamanic observation: if the season is bad, if the right conditions are not present (abundance, the possibility of building up ones reserves) the Mother Bear, quite reasonably, defers the gestation of her young and awaits better days. Because the bear is, above all, pragmatic and knows how to be patient if needs be. It knows how to make the most of the riches at its disposition without either wasting them or under-estimating them. Born between September 24 and October 22, your animal totem is the Crow. The crow, like Libra, is first and foremost a communicator. Furthermore,

among Amerindian tribes, the crow is a primordial creature, whose mission is to organise and civilise the world. Like all the birds but even more so, the crow is also a symbol of liberty and levity. It is interesting to compare the opposing signs Aries/Libra and Hawk/Crow. The solitary hawk, an intrepid hunter hesitates between destruction and initiation while at the other end of the scale, the crow seems to have discovered the virtues of pacifism, the harmony of the group and mental revelations. Born between October 23 and November 22, your animal totem is the Snake. The snake is the symbol of mutation and regeneration. It is forever changing and always the same. It regularly has need of a change of skin to carry on living, and with that alone it is in perfect analogy with the Eighth House (itself linked to Scorpio) which speaks of great personal transformations and existential crises. One must also emphasise the snake’s potential for transformation, its capacity to radically change through its life. This is often carried out for love and thanks to the goodwill the snake may or may not have been able to create around him. Born between November 23 and December 21, your animal totem is the Owl. The owl is capable of the best and of the worst, just like the Sagittarius. Among the peoples of North America, it does not systematically possess the negative connotations attributed to it by western Christianity. In fact, if an individual touched by the influence of the owl manages to listen to the wisdom it possesses, he or she will be capable of great things, and will be able to advise and guide others. But if he or she succumbs to their basest instincts, they will bring death and misery because they will then represent a perverted use of divine forces. Born between December 22 and January 20, your animal totem is the Goose To understand this animal totem, it is well worth taking a trip into ornithology even if it is just to tweak the preconception of the stupidity of the

goose. In fact the truth is quite the opposite. The goose is one of the most intelligent birds as biologists’ studies have proven. The bird owes its unflattering intellectual reputation to its stubbornness because once a goose has an idea in its head; it will keep on at it. Actually, one finds this trait in the native who will often chase a goal, even to their own detriment, just because they had decided to do something that way and find themselves incapable of changing their opinion or tackling the problem from a different angle. Born between January 21 and February 18, your animal totem is the Otter A little like a dolphin, the otter loves to splash about in the water and “have fun”. It can also slide down a slope; play with stones or pieces of wood without this being necessary to or even part of its survival. It can be counted, therefore, as one of the exceptions in the animal kingdom and because of this one easily attributes to it the traits of being a fantasist, eccentric, of reacting in a somewhat off-beat way because it is driven by inner forces that escape us. This pattern of behaviour is equally present in the Uranian and in natives of the sign Aquarius. Born between February 19 and March 20, your animal totem is the Wolf. Amerindian shamans do not fail to notice the sense of devotion and selfsacrifice in the wolf. A gregarious animal, it has a rich and hugely complex social life, just like that of the Pisces. And, especially while young, it is ready to give of itself for the good of all. The wolf is also considered a link between the earthly and the spiritual world. Its knowledge of the human soul and of the secrets of the beyond even allowed it to reign among the dead in some tribes such as that of the Algonquin. One could never forget the heart-rending howl of the wolf at death – something that is without doubt its way of communicating with invisible forces.
