Do I Qualify for The ERC Federal Assistance Program?
By d-mars.com News Provider
The strength of the country relies on its estimated 33.2 million small businesses, which comprise 99.9 percent of all American businesses. COVID threatened, and in some cases forced, the closure of many small enterprises and tens of thousands are still reeling from the aftermath of the full pandemic.
To offer some relief, the federal government created the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) Program under the IRS that has already helped thousands of qualifying businesses receive up to $26,000 per employee. Unfortunately, not enough small business owners are aware of the program. Others don’t think they will qualify, leaving billions of dollars on the table that could help them recover and continue to move forward.
Companies such as ERC Helpdesk, www.erchelpdesk.com, have been created to help small businesses determine their qualifications and navigate the ERC program. Now is the perfect time for business owners around the country to see if they make the cut. A small business can receive an ERC even if it received PPP. The program is flexible enough that most businesses will likely be eligible. The average claim is $150,000, but there is no cap on the amount.
“I was the owner of a marketing business that assisted dozens of small business owners, so I witnessed firsthand the challenges and sweat equity involved in taking such a big risk,” said ERC Helpdesk chief marketing officer, Greg Ross-Smith. “Our founder was and remains a small business owner himself who was initially told his businesses would not qualify for an ERC and there was nobody he could find to make sense of the program. When he finally learned about the program details and what the actual qualifications are, not only did he apply and receive funds, but he also decided to create a way to assist other small business owners in taking advantage of the funding available for their businesses.”
THE GRASS AIN’T ALWAYS Old Folks Saying
GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE
While this idiom can apply to any situation, let’s tackle this old-fashioned saying for today with dating. Sometimes, the “fine” person isn’t always the greatest choice because with anything, you’ll have to water it for it to grow. However, if that water isn’t producing good greener pastures, looking discolored causes confusion, stick with the person whose clarity gives you peace. It may seem obvious, but keeping your lawn watered is critical for lush and green grass. A person does not always seem more appealing than the things he or she does have.
Farmers Market Partners-Missouri City
celebrates its 5th year anniversary
By d-mars.com
LFD COMMUNICATIONS, LAURA FRNKA-DAVIS
Farmers Market Partners-Missouri City, a local farmer’s market certified by the Texas Department of Agriculture announced today that it will celebrate its fifth anniversary on March 18, 2023.
“Missouri City’s first farmers market which was established in March of 2018 is thriving and has helped several local farmers and businesses flourish in a time of uncertainty caused by the pandemic,” said Thomasine Johnson, owner of Farmers Market Partners-Missouri City and a local resident. “When we first launched the market, our goal was to create an authentic space for all people to share in their local community and establish healthy lifestyles by providing a sustainable living for local farmers and artisans. This is exactly what we have been blessed to do.”
Approximately 2,500 customers attend the farmer’s market monthly to visit the more than 40 vendors who attend regularly. Since its inception, the market also has established relationships with several community partners including the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, the Alzheimer’s Association, Fort Bend Master Gardeners,
Here are the basics to see if you qualify:
1. Your business is based in the United States.
2. You retained and paid W2 employees during 2020 and 2021.
3. Your business was impacted by COVID restrictions in one or more of the following ways:
• Loss of revenue
• Supply chain disruptions
• Full or partial shutdown of your business
Now a growing industry, ERC companies are popping up all over so be wary about who you work with. Ideally, try to work with a company you know, or at least one that understands the needs and inner workings of a small business. Often, it helps to work with a smaller sized ERC business that’s accessible and that will work with your submission on a one-on-one basis. Bigger isn’t always better in this industry. Of course, partnering with a company that maintains a high approval rate for its clients is a critical point of measurement as many companies can waste your time and get your hopes up by simply submitting anything knowing the chances of success are slim. Finally, to the degree you can determine it, try to work with a company that will process your application as quickly as possible while focusing on reducing errors that can delay the process.
“So many small businesses are built organically with the participation, support and hard work of family and friends. As a result, we understand the investment of time, resources and relationships that go into every business we work with,” said RossSmith. “In the ERC business, integrity, trust and customer service rule and that’s what I’d urge all applicants to consider in navigating their eligibility for the program. Our only goal is to help them qualify and then maximize their efforts and amount of compensation they receive.”
Junior Achievement, as well as Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Additionally, the farmer’s market created a Young Sprout’s Lemonade Stand to help children understand and appreciate different aspects of entrepreneurship. In 2022, the market also established the Jean Jerauld Back-to-School Scholarship for deserving student volunteers.
“Watching the farmers market grow from literally nothing has been interesting from a community development point of view. The community has embraced the idea and looks forward to gathering on Saturday mornings to support their local businesses,” said Johnson. “In many ways, the farmers market has become somewhat of an incubator for local businesses that have now established larger ventures because of the exposure they gained through participating in Farmers Market Partners- Missouri City.”
Johnson, spoke exclusively to d-mars.com detailing why the farmer’s market became an expansion of her own skillset, “I retired from AT&T 23 years ago. When I retired, I always wanted to be an interior designer. I went back to college after receiving a degree in business and would later add another in interior design. I noticed working at the farmer’s market was so like my education. It’s the same concept, it’s putting things together that work. By being a community development, it’s like checking off the boxes.
The market is located at 5855 Sienna Springs Way is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. rain or shine, and offers organic and locally grown vegetables, fruits, baked goods, natural products, food trucks, and more. FMP also has reward incentives through punch cards for bags, t-shirts and more in support of community initiatives.

HR Advisory Firm McLean & Company
Promotes Support for Employee Resource Groups All Year Round
By d-mars.com News Provider
Black History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean consideration for resource groups and people of color wasn’t intact.
According to PRNewswire, organizations DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) practices including employee resource groups (ERGs) celebrated BHM through inward exemptions, policies and initiatives. Since these groups are often employeeled initiatives, HR must balance supporting employee efforts without taking over. Employees from a diverse range of backgrounds want connections in the workplace with one another through common interests and shared experiences, says leading global HR research and advisory firm McLean & Company. This has led to ERGs emerging within organizations. According to the firm, since ERGs are frequently initiated by employees, HR has a delicate but crucial role to play in their long-term success. To guide HR and organizational leaders in their efforts to support ERGs, McLean & Company has released its newest blueprint, Create a Pathway for Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to Connect to Organizational Support. HR’s role is to create a pathway with guidance and resources for employee resource groups (ERGs) to increase their effectiveness and sustainment. HR must be careful to balance between supporting and not taking over employee efforts.
Presently, HR teams are observing that job applicants are considering more than the traditional compensation priorities, expanding their list of primary considerations to include an organization’s stance on social and ethical practices. This makes investing in the success of ERGs a particularly timely focus for organizations seeking to improve attraction and retention of top talent amid not only Black History Month but also a challenging labor market in uncertain economic times.
HR leaders can align with and support ERGs by
1. Understand the current state of ERGs – The first step requires seeking to understand the different types of ERGs and the role HR plays in creating a pathway for them to form. It also asks HR leaders to review the current state of DEI and ERGs within the organization and prepare to design the structure, tools, and processes for ERGs.
2. Create structure, processes, and tools to support ERGs – Step two includes finalizing an overview of the governance framework to communicate to ERGs. This involves establishing a formal application process to share with groups seeking the organization’s support and outlining executive sponsor roles and expectations. Next is preparing resource guidelines, curating tools, and planning for communication of available resources for ERGs.
3. Establish metrics and plan for sustainment – The third and final step involves establishing ERG metrics to monitor progress, identifying opportunities for HR to provide ongoing support to ERGs, offering additional resources to support their sustainment, and discussing the future evolution of ERGs within the organization.
McLean & Company cautions that HR’s role is to plan and provide a pathway with guidance and resources for ERGs to increase effectiveness and sustainment rather than taking control of group management. Supporting grassroots ERGs through formalization without taking control of the groups themselves can be a delicate process. Sometimes ERGs may wish to refrain from receiving organizational support, and it is important to remember that ERGs will take on many forms and do not always require support from the organization.
says LynnAnn Brewer, director of HR Research & Advisory Services at McLean & Company. “Organizations seeking to improve in any of these areas have a vested interest in ensuring ERGs have support from both leadership and HR. To achieve this, HR must seek to understand the needs, interests, and goals of the organization’s ERGs to understand their current state and where they may require additional support.”
McLean & Company’s latest industry resource suggests that HR leaders create a pathway for ERGs to receive formal support from the organization. Should the groups choose to become formalized within the organization, this may look like budget, recruitment, and the empowerment to run or support key internal initiatives. While many ERGs may connect racially marginalized communities, such as those that support Black employees, they may also focus on groups with disabilities, those who identify as LGBTQIA2+, and women, for example.
Throughout February in support of HR teams and leaders seeking to learn and educate employees, McLean & Company shared research-backed resources as a platform for success.
The timely resources are now accessible via social media and through the firm’s member newsletters, which will focus on key steps and elements of DEI in the workplace.

Bringing Dreams to Life:
5 SKILLS FOR MAKING IDEAS A REALITY
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior
People across the world have tackled immense challenges since the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic, from social isolation to financial burdens, in a distanced and digitally enabled world. As a result, many important projects were put on hold. But at the same time, many people have taken the opportunity to make bigger and better plans - and are ready to make these dreams a reality.
In a recent global survey conducted by Project Management Institute (PMI), nearly four in five consumers (79%) said they consider 2021 to be a “do-over,” and an even greater number, 86%, plan to work harder this year to bring their ideas to life. “The pandemic disrupted countless 2020 plans, but many leaders and innovative thinkers used the time wisely to map out their next moves,” says Mike Deprisco, chief operating officer for PMI.
But turning ideas into reality doesn’t come easy. Whether you’re looking to level up in your career, kickstart new project or create a completely new business, MI outlines the power skills you need to continue advancing:
1. COMMUNICATION
Effective communication maximizes success and minimizes risk. It involves not only conducting outward bound communication, but also listening, taking feedback, understanding nonverbal cues, and interpreting what is meant versus what is said. In a team setting, communication helps team members stay on the same page as they work toward success.
2. EMPATHY
Empathy allows team members to build greater trust and connections - with each other and with other stakeholders - by helping them understand the wide range of people and work styles they encounter. Empathy also strengthens teams by helping team members feel appreciated and heard.
3. COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP
A collaborative leadership style is more effective in inspiring and bringing team members together in pursuit of a shared vision and common goals. Collaborative leaders recognize that each member of the team has something to contribute - in executing a plan and in helping shape objectives.
4. INNOVATIVE MINDSET
An innovative mindset ensures teams are applying new ideas and fresh perspectives to how they organize work and address the myriad obstacles that emerge when turning ideas into reality. An innovative mindset also allows teams to remain agile and pivot more quickly in the face of challenges.
5. PURPOSE-DRIVEN GOALS
Having a for-purpose orientation helps minimize risks and ensures the organization’s values and commitment to social good are infused in all aspects of project design and implementation. Clear goals also empower changemakers to use their skills to bring about positive social change within teams, companies and communities.
To learn more about these skills and effective project management, visit PMI.org/ MakeReality, a virtual hub of inspiration with the tools you need to get started on your next big, bold idea. Money Mindset Shifts
Your Finances Around You Need to Make to Turn
By d-mars.com News Provider
Many consumers are feeling financial strain after a challenging economic year in 2022. One in three Americans say they are struggling to get by or are in trouble financially, according to Lincoln Financial Group’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker. The study also found that people aren’t necessarily seeing any relief in sight, with 76% believing factors like inflation, market volatility and debt will worsen.
However, there are a few bright spots. Those who had specific financial goals last year were two to three times more likely to say various aspects of their personal finances improved. They were also three times more likely to say they did a great job on their overall financial wellness last year and twice as likely to be optimistic about their finances in 2023. So where should you start in creating and reaching your own financial goals?
“Lincoln’s research underscores the importance of taking a definitive approach,” said Ed Walters, senior vice president, Lincoln Financial Network, the wealth management arm of Lincoln Financial Group.
Lincoln Financial Group recommends setting these three goals to help turn your finances around in the months ahead:
1. Develop and stick to a budget. Keep it simple. Start with fixed expenses like mortgage, rent, savings and car payments, then move to the more flexible expenses like groceries and entertainment. Instead of establishing a fixed amount, bucket the flexible expenses together and adjust how you allocate your money monthly to address your needs and plans for that month. Tap into budgeting calculators and other expense management tools.
2. Save some money from every paycheck. Now that you have a simple budget in place, take a few minutes to review those monthly expenses, from mortgage and car payments to morning coffee. Cutting a little bit here and there may reveal extra money to set aside. Those funds can be put toward an emergency savings account, employer-sponsored retirement plan or college fund, or be used to prioritize investments. You’ll be surprised how quickly a little bit adds up over time.
3. Work with a financial professional. Lincoln’s study found consumers who are advised by financial professionals are more successful in meeting their goals. A financial professional can help tailor a holistic plan to your specific needs, as well as educate you about various insurance and retirement solutions.
“It’s important that you’re honest with yourself about where you are financially and what your goals are,” said Walters. “With a little discipline, knowledge and guidance, you can have a strong financial year and see long-lasting results.”

Rihanna Breaks Record to Become
Richest Super Bowl Headliner
By Joseph Green-Bishop Texas Metro News Correspondent
Musical artists have been finding new ways to secure their incomes in addition to releasing songs and albums based on the times. Despite the shift in music, artists still earn payouts (albeit a lot smaller) from royalties – just like they would from physical copy sales. These streaming platforms pay the artists to put their songs in their library.
Artists do not deal with streaming platforms directly. Instead, they use a distributor who will then take care of getting their music to the platforms. In some cases, the record label is also the distributor. That apparently is affecting Rihanna and her business endeavors past music.
When Rihanna, the Barbadian-megastar and successful cosmetics and lingerie executive, took the Super Bowl LVII stage a week ago, approximately 100 million television viewers witnessed the wealthiest halftime performer in the history of the annual event.
With a net worth of $1.7 billion, Rihanna, who was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, sits at the pinnacle of a Super Bowl list that includes Dolly Parton, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Gloria Estefan, Alicia Keys,
Bono, Dr. Dre, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks and numerous other world-famous performers, according to Forbes. Jay-Z, himself a billionaire entertainer, described Rihanna as a “generational talent who has exceeded all expectations in every instance. She is one of the industry’s most prominent artists,” he said. This year’s Super Bowl was played on February 12th in Glendale, AZ. The event, held at State Farm Stadium, was the first time that both teams were led by an African American quarterback.
“It is awesome that Rhianna has accomplished so much at such a young age,” said Yolanda Frazier Gills, the founder of Frazier Gills, a certified tax resolution firm in Dallas, a former chairperson of the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce.
The 57th Super Bowl took place on February 12th at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ. Apple Music partnered with the National Football League in producing the event, according to league officials. “Rihanna has been a cultural force throughout her career,” said Seth Dudowsky, an awarding-winning music executive, who is also the director of music for the NFL. “We are thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime stage” Mr. Dudowsky said.
She joins Dolly Parton, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Gloria Estefan, Alicia Keys, Bono, Dr. Dre, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks and numerous other world-famous performers, according to Forbes, as the top tier acts of the halftime show.

BEWARE OF PREDATORY LENDING
When Shopping for a Home
By Felicia Guidry Houston Black Real Estate Association (HBREA)
Predatory lending practices are the fraudulent, deceptive and unfair tactics some people use to dupe consumers into mortgage loans they can’t afford. Burdened with high mortgage debts, victims of predatory lending find themselves unable to manage the upkeep of their houses. They struggle just to stay on top of their mortgage payments. Often, the strain is too much. They succumb to foreclosure and lose their homes, which often is devastating.
Run down and vacant houses, the inevitable result of predatory lending, wreak havoc on neighborhoods. Property values fall. People move away. Neighborhoods that once were stable start to crumble. Something that has been so important for so many people lay in ruins. Everyone who lived in a neighborhood destroyed by predatory lending becomes a victim.
The United States Attorney’s Office has made combating predatory lending a priority. The Office is taking a comprehensive approach to addressing the problem of predatory lending through education, prosecution and remediation.
EDUCATION
An educated consumer is the predatory lending syndicate’s worst customer. Educated consumers know what loans are right for them and where to find them. The United States Attorney’s Office has prepared a brochure with some helpful information about preventing mortgage fraud. You can print it out, double-sided, and fold it in thirds to hand it out. Click here for the brochure. Click here for the brochure in Spanish. Share it with friends, neighbors, and anyone you think would benefit from the information.
PROSECUTION
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has prosecuted and will continue to prosecute the worst predatory lenders. The Office can use your help. Pay attention to what is going on in your community. If something looks suspicious, check it out. Report it.
Say “No.” Don’t let someone talk you into something you really don’t want or need. Also, it’s ok to change your mind.
Never let a contractor get a loan for you. If you are doing home improvements, a contractor may tell you that he can get a loan for you. Don’t let him. Find the loan yourself; it will be cheaper.
Don’t make final payment to a contractor until all the work is done. Some contractors may ask you to sign over checks to them or to sign so-called “completion certificates” before they finish the work on your house. Don’t. Make sure you’re happy with the work on your house before you turn over any money to a contractor. Avoid pre-payment penalties. If possible, don’t take a loan that penalizes you for refinancing. You may get stuck in a loan that you can’t get out of.
Don’t lie. No matter what anyone else may tell you, it’s not ok to lie on a form, even a little. If you get a loan based on false documents, you may be getting in over your head. You won’t be able to afford the loan.
REPORT WRONGDOING. IF YOU LEARN THAT SOMEONE DID SOMETHING ILLEGAL, REPORT IT.
TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME
Get help! There are scores of housing and credit counselors that can help you decide whether a loan is right for you.
Know your credit rating. Obtain a copy of your credit report.
Trust your instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t true. Many predatory lenders are slick salesmen. They know how to talk. They don’t always tell you the whole truth. If a deal doesn’t sound right to you, walk away.
Ask questions, demand answers. Predatory lenders will try to fool you by making your loan confusing. If you don’t understand anything, ask. Demand an answer. Read everything. Get all the loan documents before closing. Don’t sign anything until you have read it. If there is something incorrect, fix it. If you’re confused about something, ask.
Don’t fall for a “bait and switch.” If what you read in your loan papers is not what you wanted, expected, or agreed to, don’t sign. Be prepared to walk out. Learn about your loan. There are many organizations that produce publications that can be helpful. We have listed some of them in this brochure.
Shop around. There are lots of people who may be willing to give you a loan. Most of them are honest, responsible people. Find them. Call as many banks as you can. Look in your newspaper’s real estate section for advertisements. Go to the library and search the internet; try “mortgage,” “mortgage rate,” and “mortgage companies.”
Take your time. A predatory lender will try to rush you so you can’t ask questions. Take all the time you need to understand what your deal is.
AGGRESSIVE SOLICITATIONS
Whose idea was it to get this loan? Did someone sell it to you? Be wary of anyone who came to you trying to sell you a loan. If you need a loan, shop around for it yourself.
LOAN FLIPPING
Loan flipping is pressuring you to re-finance your loan over and over. Before you refinance, make sure a new loan makes you better off. For instance, do not refinance a low interest loan into one with a higher interest rate. See a housing counselor.
HIGH FEES
Look at your Good Faith Estimate of Costs and your settlement sheet. Do you know what each fee is for? If not, ask. If your total fees are more than 5% of your loan, that’s probably too much.
PROPERTY TAXES
If you don’t save enough money to pay your tax bill, a predatory lender will try to lend you money for your taxes. You may want to have your taxes “escrowed.” That means that you will put aside some money each month for your taxes.
BALLOON PAYMENTS
A balloon payment is one very large payment you make at the end of the loan. Predatory lenders like balloon payments because they can tell you that your monthly payment is low. The problem is that you may not be able to make the payment and will need to re-finance. You’ll need a new loan with new fees and costs.
Consolidating debt. It’s not always a good idea to pay off your credit cards with a mortgage loan. If you can’t pay your credit cards, it’s almost impossible for someone to take your house. If you consolidate, however, your house is collateral. Consolidating means you risk losing your house to pay your credit cards.
Many government organizations publish consumer materials about predatory lending online, so be sure to consult those for more information.

THE BENEFITS OF COUPLES THERAPY: Why Every Couple Needs It
By Tami V. Allen, MS, LPC Contributing Writer
here are many benefits to counseling other than addressing conflict and crisis. Therapy, in general, is for every individual and occasionally, individuals may need therapy for self-improvement. Whether looking to improve the quality of the relationship at a critical turning point or feeling hopeless, here are the most common reasons/benefits for seeking relationship counseling.
Experience Our World of Advertising, Marketing, Media and Communication 14 | March 2023 HEALTH T
1. COMMUNICATION
Improved communication can lead to improved intimacy when the couple learns how to speak openly and actively listen to what the other person is saying. By learning new communication skills, you could get out of the “crazy cycle” and restore the intimacy in the relationship.
2.
INFIDELITY
A therapist can provide insight and clarity about the current state of the relationship and how it got to this point. The therapist
facilitates the healing journey which requires honesty, transparency, and behavioral changes to restore trust.
3. PREMARITAL
There are many topics that couples need to discuss before marriage such as finances, roles of each partner, future personal and joint goals, family planning, household chores, sex, and family histories.
4. SEX AND INTIMACY
To improve intimacy, the therapist will help each individual identify their love language and utilize them in their actions together. Understanding and incorporating your partner’s love language has the potential to improve your physical, emotional, spiritual, and sexual relationship with each other.
5. TRUST AND TRAUMA
When trust issues exist, so does a wall that makes it challenging to be open and vulnerable with your partner. Therapy can help you identify the origins of the trust/ trauma issues that are impacting the relationship with your partner.
6. OUTSIDE FACTORS
Outside factors can include but are not limited to in-laws, friends, separate hobbies, job stressors, and even children.
7. STEP-PARENTING & CO-PARENTING
Depending on the level of recovery from past relationships, it can be helpful to bring both families together for the therapist to support and guide everyone through the change. The therapist serves as a neutral party to help make a smooth transition so that all parties are on the same page for the sake of the children.
8.
NAVIGATING LIFE DECISION
Deciding where to live, job change, expanding the family, returning to school, etc., are decisions that impact both parties. The therapist will help identify the concerns and needs of both parties and help the couple make decisions that are in the best interest of the relationship.
9. DIVORCE
While divorce can feel like a failure, parting ways amicably and working together as co-parents can turn out to be successful with the right skills and tools. You can also learn how to discuss things with your children and family.
Deciding to start therapy can be difficult. However, scheduling the first appointment shows commitment to improving the relationship and yourself. You don’t have to be in crisis for marriage counseling to feel beneficial, and you will ultimately gain more tools and skills to use in your relationship. My goal as a therapist is to work with individuals and couples to help bridge the gaps in your interpersonal development that subsequently affects your relationships.

MANAGE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
By Émil Flemmon Associate Editor
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, affects nearly half of adults in the United States, and only about 1 in 4 with this condition have it under control, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Hypertension can be dangerous and, in many cases, fatal. In 2020, it was a primary or contributing cause of more than 670,000 deaths nationwide. Medical experts say that controlling your blood pressure is possible and it starts with having the right information.
“Nearly half of all American adults have high blood pressure, and many don’t even know it. High blood pressure is a ‘silent killer,’ often having no overt symptoms, but increases the likelihood of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health risks. I urge you to know your numbers and make the simple lifestyle changes that can help you control your blood pressure and live a long and healthy life,” says Jack Resneck Jr., M.D., president of the American Medical Association (AMA).
TO GET ON THE RIGHT TRACK, CONSIDER THESE TIPS AND INSIGHTS FROM THE AMA
1. Know your numbers. Hypertension is diagnosed when your systolic blood pressure is greater than 130 mmHg or your average diastolic blood pressure is greater than 80 mmHg. Visit ManageYourBP.org to better understand your numbers.
2. Monitor blood pressure. Once you learn your blood pressure numbers, take and keep regular records using an at-home blood pressure monitor. For an accurate reading, the CDC says to sit with your back supported for 5 minutes before starting and wait at least 30 minutes after drinking or eating a meal. You should also avoid stimulants for at least 30 minutes beforehand, as the CDC says that smoking and drinking alcohol or caffeine can elevate your blood pressure. If you take medication for hypertension, measure your blood pressure before your dose. Share your numbers with your health care provider.
3. Eat right. Reduce your intake of processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Eat less red meat and processed meats, and add more plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and olive oil
to your diet. Also, reduce your consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and drink more water instead. Drinking sugary beverages, even 100% fruit juices, is associated with a higher all-cause mortality risk, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open.
4. Drink alcohol only in moderation. If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans -- up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.
5. Be more physically active. Do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorousintensity activity. Be sure to include a mix of cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility. Obtain guidance from your doctor if you aren’t sure if it is safe for you to exercise.
6. Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight, losing as little as 5 to 10 pounds may help lower your blood pressure. Consult your doctor about safe ways to maintain a healthy weight.

A Guide to Improving Mental Health for Overworked Nurses
By d-mars.com News Provider
While the worst of the pandemic is behind us, if you’re a nurse, you know its effects live on. Ongoing staffing shortages spurred by pandemic-related layoffs and resignations have created conditions in many healthcare settings that are untenable for workers, inspiring nurses in some areas of the country to go on strike.
In this climate of high stress and tension, anxiety, depression and burnout are common, but industry experts say that if you’re a nurse experiencing these mental health issues, there are steps you can take to feel better, including rethinking the way you deliver self-care and care for your patients.
Nursing is largely about caring for others, but it’s important to take time each day to focus on your own wellness,
says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Interim Healthcare Inc. “While many traditional nursing jobs aren’t able to offer the amount of time and space needed to recharge with self-care, careers in the home healthcare industry offer flexibility, good work-life balance and great job satisfaction.”
In an Interim Healthcare Inc. survey, 71% of licensed medical professionals reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has led them to consider a career shift to home healthcare as a way to reconnect with why they got into healthcare in the first place. Fortunately for patients and nurses alike, the home healthcare field is growing in size and scope. Once associated primarily with senior care, it now extends to many other facets of care -- from caring for acute illnesses like COVID-19, to complex medical care for children, to specialized care for chronic diseases, dementia and hospice. In fact, much of the technology and clinical capabilities of the hospital are available at home, making home care possible for more patients, and ultimately allowing for more nurses to make the switch.
BEYOND RETHINKING YOUR ROLE IN THE NURSING INDUSTRY, SHEETS OFFERS THESE ADDITIONAL MENTAL WELLNESS TIPS:
• Understand the symptoms of mental health issues, like anxiety, depression, and burnout. If you are living with these issues, talk to a trusted friend or family member about what you’re experiencing and consider addressing your concerns with a mental health professional. Telehealth is making it easier to fit counseling or therapy into a weekly schedule, particularly one that changes from week to week.
• While depression and anxiety can feel lonely, know that you’re not alone. Other nurses are feeling the same way right now. Lean on colleagues for support.
• Implement activities around self-care and set aside time for yourself. Breathing exercises, meditation and yoga can be powerful stress relievers, and studies consistently show that even just a few minutes of regular moderate or vigorous exercise can reduce your risk of depression.
• Simplify daily tasks to ease mental health symptoms. Whether it’s relying on apps to help you check off items on your to-do list or being more realistic about the social commitments you make, there are many ways to ensure your life outside of work doesn’t unduly add to your stress.
• Look for job opportunities that will make you happier. Those in home healthcare let you make your own schedule, match you with assignments that fit your needs and preferences, and offer variety, support, flexibility, and better nurse-to-patient ratios. To explore these benefits, visit careers. interimhealthcare.com.
During the ongoing challenges plaguing the nursing industry, it’s important to focus on your wellness. Doing so can help you get back to focusing on making a difference in the lives of your patients.

THE RIGHT FREQUENCY TO WASH YOUR TOWELS Guidelines and Tips
By d-mars.com News Provider
According to an article from the Huffington Post, the question about how often we should wash our bathing towels came into play and was quite interesting.
Roman Kemp, a British radio host and TV personality asked a question from his 318.5K followers on Twitter – Is it best to wash our towels after every use, or should we wait a week or two?
Do we really know what “clean” means for towel usage or is there a system we use?
After a few responses, some people detailed that after about three uses they wash their towels. Others declared odor detection as an indicator to wash them. Check out some of mixed tweets regarding cleanliness:
Okay, now that we’ve got that out the way, here’s some things to consider for better hygiene.
So, How Often Do We Need to Wash Our Towels After Consistent Usage?
University of Arizona microbiologist Charles Gerba told Time magazine that a study he performed determined bathroom towels contained coliform bacteria up to 90 percent. The bacteria are organisms filled with disease-causing bugs found in water of which E. coli makes up for nearly 14 percent. Dr. Lisa Ackerley, aka The Hygiene Doctor, suggests that for some people who clean “well,” may be able to get away with several uses as opposed to others. “If someone is very good at cleaning themselves and leaves the towel looking clean, they could probably get away with several uses,” she said. “But if they are not very good and the towel looks dirty afterwards, they might want to wash it after every use.”
Overall, washing towels can be contingent from person to person based on frequency. What you may not know is that after using your towel(s), dry them by airing them, according to Professor Val Curtis of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Curtis also recommended to properly washing bath towels “once a week.”
Taking Into Consideration Washer Temperature
The NHS recommends that when washing towels should be at a temperature of 60°C. However, if you’re using bleach-based laundry products, 40°C is vital towards germ prevention and growth. Ackerley states the hotter you wash your cloths, the better off you’ll be in the fight against germs.
Towels should be washed at above 60°C to ensure that bacteria and fungi are killed,
she says. “I actually go for 90°C as some machines are not always accurate about their temperature achievement.” If you wash at 30°C, you won’t kill the bacteria and fungi, she warns.
If you’re more of an environmentalist-type interested in reducing plastic pollution, energy consumption and even lowering your water bill, Friends and Earth
But here’s a curveball we’ve mentioned before: if the environment is your top priority, Julian Kirby, plastics campaigner at Friends of the Earth, urges you to keep washing at a low temperature – it’ll reduce plastic pollution, save energy consumption, and lower your bills. Guess this one’s up to you.

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR INNOVATIVE CANCER TREATMENTS AND CARE
By d-mars.com News Provider
For many patients, initial cancer treatments are not enough, and residual cancer cells that survive these treatments can cause relapse. But new research is seeking to harness the immune system to target residual disease, thereby helping patients avoid relapses and live longer.
Using a novel mechanism of action that directly targets the cancerous cells, we are hoping to enhance the ability of NK cells – that is natural killer cells – to eliminate residual disease,
says RJ Tesi, MD, CEO of INmune Bio Inc., (NASDAQ: INMB), a clinical stage immunooncology company. “NK cells are part of our innate immune system and are essential for survival. In addition to directly killing infected cells and cancer cells, NK cells facilitate crosstalk between the innate and adaptive immune system.”
As Dr. Tesi goes on to explain, NK cells play a critical role in killing cancer cells that remain after such treatments as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. While modern cancer therapies can effectively eliminate most cancer in a patient, to eliminate all cancer cells, the patient’s immune system needs to do its part and kill the residual disease. When cancer cells evade NK cells by making themselves effectively invisible, the immune system can’t identify them and therefore can’t kill them. This failure of the immune system to eliminate residual disease is the cause of cancer relapse.
INKmune, INmune Bio Inc.’s lead product, activates resting NK cells into a primed state to kill cancer. Currently in clinical trials, this therapy is already showing promising results. INKmune-primed NK cells have demonstrated an ability to kill several types of cancer cells. To learn more, visit inmunebio.com.
“Chemotherapy and radiotherapy reduce the tumor burden, but are not always curative alone,” says Dr. Tesi. “To eradicate the disease and turn cancer relapsers into survivors, we also need an effective immune response to control residual cancer cells left behind after primary treatment.”

Russell Simmons and TOKAU Come Together to Launch New
‘Masterminds of Hip Hop’
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent
Def Jam Records founder Russell Simmons has collaborated with TOKAU to launch an NFT (non-fungible tokens) collection named “Masterminds of Hip Hop.”
A spokesperson for the music and business mogul said the collection is built alongside legendary musicians who were the original rappers of Hip Hop.
According to a news release, the exclusive joint venture aims to give credit and compensation back to the original musicians who helped to create the multi-billiondollar industry that Hip Hop has become.
Def Jam Records counts as the largest label under Universal Music.
TOKAU is the world’s leading platform that allows Celebrities and Influencers to interact with their fans using blockchain NFT technology.
“None of them has received the accolades that I believe they deserve, and this is my chance to use a new vehicle to revisit and repay these amazing artists while they are still living. Masterminds of Hip Hop aims to give credit back to the creators of the cultural movement,” Simmons continued.
As part of the venture, Simmons will work with Tokau to sign more than 15 of the original pioneers in Hip Hop responsible for establishing the culture.
“Masterminds of Hip Hop” will be a collector’s series broken into two phases –pre-recorded and early recording. The collaborative promises to release at least 40 exclusive NFTs.
Each NFT will be a unique collectible co-designed and co-curated by Simmons, the artist, and the Tokau team and capture a piece of Hip Hop history behind the scenes with stories told by the artists.
Dennis Jia, the head of the Tokau family, noted in the news release.
“Our goal is to give credit back to the original artists,” asserted Tokau, who is also known as Dennis Tok.
Simmons added that he regularly reminisces about the early days of rap music.
“I often think of the early days of pre-recorded hip hop when it was only a performance art. Some rappers and DJs pioneered space and made it so popular that the recording of rap artists was eminent,” Simmons noted in the release.
Together, the entire collection showcases a wholistic story of the origins and development of Hip Hop that became the most potent part of global musical culture today.
“Artists now have a powerful way to distribute their art using cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. This reflects a new phase of how fintech and blockchain technology merges with art for the benefit of all,” Miranda Tan, a spokesperson for Tokau, said in a statement.

Planning a Trip? Here are 4 Great Places
You Should Consider When You Have Your Passport
By d-mars.com News Provider
Okay! So, you’ve finally done it! You have got your passport and you are ready to start searching for where to go and how to go about it. When you’re traveling while Black, the checklist of things to consider can be overwhelming for first timers and even dangerous. However, after looking up YouTube videos “Best Counties for Black Travelers: Solo Travel Edition,” we came up with some safe destinations for traveling while Black.
CHECK OUT THESE RECOMMENDATIONS
St. Lucia, Soufrière District and Choiseul District
This warm destination attracts nearly 400,000 tourists yearly. It’s very popular for couples and honeymooning. Because of the warm weather, January is a great time to hit up the island abundant in lush greenery and many hills. If you’re a nature lover, the Soufrière and Choiseul districts will be ideal. Visit the only drive-in volcano in the world, enjoy the uncrowded Sulphur Springs or the clear water secluded bay – Anse Cochon – where you snorkel and dive in this treasured location in St. Lucia. Black travelers who dream of being surrounded by the ever-present glory of one of the Caribbean’s most iconic mountains – Gros Piton – will truly enjoy this destination.
Panama, Panama City
If you’re searching for big city vibes and connected roots to Latin America, this is the place for you. The city has an elected and urban metropolis with tropical getaways. Much like St. Lucia, January is a good time to visit the
melting pot of musical culture and numerous festivals. Part of the immigration hub in Central America, Panama is a great place for those who enjoy international cities.
Portugal, Lisbon
If you’re looking for a European escape, Libson attracts travelers all over the world with its cinematic sceneries and lively settings. Not big on summer sun, the historical sites and panoramic views make up for that. With Portugal being its neighbor, it’s known to be a better option for Black travelers desiring a comfortable experience while in Europe. Lisbon, home to many migrants including Brazilian, Cape Verdean and Angolan may be one of the least European-feeling European cities. Visiting during earlier months in the year helps to contribute to the local tourism economy.
The least busy time to visit Lisbon is in the winter, between late October and early April, except for major holidays. Lisbon is most popular in the summer months, so if you can visit in the off-season, you will find that crowds are much lower, and you will have an easier time visiting all the most popular attractions.
Costa Rica, Limón
This biodiverse country is densely rich in natural landscapes and is perfect to get into for nature. It’s also one of the underrepresented in Afro-Costan Rican culture. The Limón province, home to various reggae infused towns such as Cocles and Puerto Viejo, the ‘Jamaican’ town of Limón, is highly favored by many a Black traveler.

A DISH FOR EVERY OCCASION: DEVILED EGGS
By d-mars.com News Provider
In case you didn’t know, the term “deviled egg” is a culinary term from the 18th century. It’s described as a fried or boiled dish doused in heavy seasoning including spicy, condiment-filled dishes. The word would eventually latch itself to eggs.
Now, let’s call a spade a spade. Deviled eggs are perfect and easy-to-make showstoppers for your upcoming Easter menu, Christmas dinner, or family and friends gathering. You’re probably used to homemade recipes from family, but if you’re feeling risky then check out our crab-filled deviled egg recipe.
INGREDIENTS
6 large eggs
4 ounces fresh crabmeat, divided
3 tablespoons mayonnaise, or to taste
2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon lemon juice
½ teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste
1 pinch seafood seasoning (such as Old Bay®)
3 drops Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
½ teaspoon freshly grated lemon zest
1 teaspoon creme fraiche, or more to taste
½ teaspoon Aleppo pepper
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives, divided
⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper, plus more for garnish
DIRECTIONS
Place cold eggs from refrigerator into a large pot and add enough cold water to cover eggs by 1 inch. Place over high heat, bring to a simmer, and cover pot once eggs start to move around. Remove from heat and let stand for 17 minutes.
Drain hot water from pan, cover with lid, and shake pot to lightly crack eggs. Fill pot with cold water, pour off cold water, and refill with more cold water. Let eggs stand in water until cold. Peel eggs and cut in half lengthwise. Separate yolks from egg halves; place yolks into a mixing bowl.
Place crab meat onto a plate and separate into 2 equal portions, one containing the small bits and one containing the attractive larger pink chunks. Reserve portion containing larger chunks.
Chop the portion of crab meat into the smaller chunks; add to egg yolks. Mash yolks with a fork. Stir in mayonnaise, tarragon, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, hot pepper sauce, seafood seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Transfer yolk mixture into a piping bag fitted with a medium tip. Pipe crab filling into cavities of egg halves.
Chop the largest crab pieces and place the remaining crabmeat into a small bowl. Lightly stir in lemon zest, creme fraiche, Aleppo pepper, and cayenne pepper with a fork. Taste and adjust salt. If mixture seems dry, stir in more creme fraiche. Top each stuffed egg with a generous pinch of crab mixture.
Sprinkle each deviled egg with a pinch of chives and a light dusting of cayenne pepper. Transfer eggs to a serving platter; refrigerate until serving time.
