DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH KEY CLUB My first encounter with Key Club was in the beginning of my sophomore year, when a close friend of mine urged me to join. At first, I was doubtful of my decision to join Key Club as at San Gabriel, our Key Club was dying to say the least as membership and engagement had plummeted in recent years. Emboldened by my passion for service and the love that I had gained for Key Club, I decided to run for the position of Public Relations Officer in hopes of revitalizing our home club. However, at the very beginning of my term, the Covid-19 pandemic had struck the world at full force and our 2020-2021 cabinet was faced with new challenges and obstacles to convert Key Club to a virtual platform. Using the state of the world to our advantage, myself and a few of my fellow officers, Lina, Katie, Selena and Ruby, had set the direction for our Key Club as we took on many initiatives including teaching ourselves how to make beautiful graphics and flyers, growing and managing our new online platforms, as well as finding ways to engage with members through club social events and general meetings. It was safe to say that during our quarantine term, Key Club had reestablished its name at San Gabriel, and I had successfully revitalized our club with the help of my wonderful officers and advisor.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME YOUR CLUB’S PRESIDENT? Key Club had become one of my top priorities over the course of my high school career, especially during quarantine as I had taken on many initiatives as an officer, so it was only natural that I was not ready to let it go. It was all due to Key Club that I had experienced tremendous growth as a student and a leader but most importantly, my passion for service and leadership had only grown stronger as well. And although I had achieved my goal of revitalizing our home club, all I could see in front of me was all the work that had to be done to strengthen our club even further and build a legacy to maintain Key Club for future terms. With the support of my friends and my fellow cabinet officers, I decided to run for the role of President and I was able to earn the position.

HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT YOUR TERM, WHAT DO YOU HOPE COMES OUT OF IT? In the first few months of my term, my cabinet and I have focused on creating strong structural foundations for our club to build on in future terms including organizational practices for keeping track of club records, setting specific graphic standards and training our officers to have proficient skills to produce graphics, as well as clearly defining the tasks and roles of each officer. I am incredibly proud of the internal work that we have done as a cabinet, but for the next half of our term, we will be focusing on external activities that specifically focus on our members. Our many plans include offering more incentives to recruit and retain members like opportunities to earn graduation stoles and cords, offering monthly member recognition, creating a more fun and inviting environment at general meetings with icebreakers and prizes, and much more! I have many goals and expectations planned for this term and I am determined to execute them to the best of my abilities.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF MUSIC, ANY SONGS YOU LIKE RIGHT NOW? I really enjoy pop music, hip-hop and rap music, but of those genres, I especially like K-Pop, K-R&B, J-Pop and J-R&B. My favorite K-Pop groups are EXO, SHINEE, Red Velvet, and Twice. As for K-R&B, my favorite artists are Dream Perfect Regime, Heize, Dean, and Crush. My favorite song at the moment is Think About by Kylesimps.

Throughout all of August, there have been multiple services, such as the following: Tiktok Feeding America: which after completing certain tasks, participants earn points that will be making donations to Feeding America. Shave the Day: a game similar to Subway Surfers that turns players in-game points into a real donation to help fund childhood cancer research. The DIY Key Club Preferred Charity Infographic: submissions of infographics about the Key Club’s Preferred Charities. Topics included in the infographics included: the preferred charity, the purpose of charity, why it was important, what Key Club did for the charity, and the important statistics.

As the heat of the summer took everyone on, it was no match for Gabrielinos dedicated members to continue completing services during the warmth. Amongst the services given out, Happy Mail Service was an exciting way for members to still stay engaged. Happy Mail Service is a project a part of the Stay Gold Society organization in which those involved can send a message to the elderly. Members can participate in many forms, like typing a letter, drawing a picture or even sending it directly to them! The heartwarming messages are sent to long-term care and retirement homes or Meals on Wheels staff, who then deliver these to elders that are going through rough times. It’s been a challenging few months for everyone anticipating the well-awaited school year to begin, but that never stops Key Club from helping out our community before it starts.

On July 2, there was a Rose Bowl 5k service opportunity for Rosemead Key Club members. The event took place at Pasadena from 5pm to 8pm. Key Club members helped prepare bags for the marathon runners. The bags included snacks, a medal, and water. As the runners were almost at the finish line, we cheered them on and motivated them to continue. When the runners completed the marathon, the volunteers handed out water bottles and bags filled with goodies. It was inspiring for Key Clubbers to see the variety of different marathon participants, including young kids, dogs, and elders. Overall, assisting at the Rose Bowl 5K was an amazing experience.

Letters to hospitalized Children During the month of July, Mark Keppel Key Club members wanted to brighten up the days of hospitalized children all over America by sending heartwarming and uplifting cards. In the midst of a pandemic, we figured that we should try to bring a little bit of joy to those who are hospitalized and fighting a bigger fight than some of us currently. Each year more than 3 million children are being hospitalized in the United States. This service opportunity aims to give heartwarming and uplifting messages to the children that are being hospitalized while providing the best support anyone can give. With these cards, we are encouraging them to power through their illness and push to get better even though things may look rough. For every 2 letters that a member sent, they were able to earn an hour of service. We also hosted zoom calls for members to join and create their cards from July 5th all the way to July 20th.

In July, SGHS Key Clubbers aided real-world organizations by playing an ocean-themed adventure game, Swim Dash. Each attempt earned a certain amount of "Karmafy Points," which converted into money donated towards the causes of their choice. The app supported donations to various organizations such as Water.org for clean water and sanitation and Barefoot College for lighting and schools. For every 300 Karmafy Points earned, members gained one service hour with a maximum of 2 hours possible. Swim Dash allowed Key Clubbers to play a fun and interactive game while doing good in the world and becoming a positive force for change. Key Clubbers also took part in the Impact service, an exercising app that tracks the steps and distance from walking or working out. These steps are converted into money and are donated to nonprofit organizations for charity. Key Clubbers are able to choose the cause they would like to support, such as for better livelihood or to provide education. Donating to these charities is as simple as finding a cause and starting a workout to gain steps to donate. For every $0.30 donated, Key Clubbers would earn 1 service hour, with a maximum of 3 hours possible. Overall, Impact provided the perfect opportunity for Key Clubbers to make an impact by simply walking.

For the month of August, Wilson cabinet members got to meet via zoom to finalize a couple of fundraiser places, and finish up the design for our home club hoodie. The design is completed, but we're still in the process of deciding how much it'll cost and the vendor. We had 3 new division services this month. The first service

is

Tiktok:

Feeding

America.

This

service

opportunity takes place on the app, Tiktok. You first go to your profile and then click the carrot at the top left corner. There you will have various tasks to complete to help earn drops of water. The second service is Shave the Day. The game itself is similar to Subway Surfers, but its mission is to help raise money for childhood cancer research. The last service for this month is DIY Key Club Preferred Charity Infographic. Like the name says, you create an infographic on a preferred Key Club Charity. Once completed, you are required to post it on your Instagram story!

For the month of July, Schurr Key Club members were provided with multiple service events. Members were prompted to participate in friendly competition as they completed the Charity miles service. Charity miles, an application that turns miles exercised into a virtual fundraiser for preferred charities, allowed Schurr students to support UNICEF while staying socially distanced. As an extra incentive, the member with the highest accumulated amount of miles won a boba of their choice personally delivered by our president, Chloe Liu. Tiktok’s Garden of Good, a service arranged by our division, lets members use a popular social media platform to play a farming simulator that converts in-game crops into real-life food donations. To complete this service, members reached out to students in their graduating class group chats and supported each other's Garden of Good gardens!
