EDITOR’S MESSAGE

Aloha Pandas! We’re already halfway through this seemingly endless summer! It is amazing to see that all of you are staying determined for service. It seems like no time at all has gone by since the last issue of The Paw! Just since the last issue, Division 28 East has already obtained an additional 264 service hours! I still congratulate all of you, whether you’re a member, officer, or advisor, and let’s keep going strong for this upcoming month. No matter where we are by the fall, we will all be together, in-person or online. Continue to be amazing, dedicated, and passionate! I will see you all in the next issue of The Paw!

Serving with Passion and Pride,

Agustin Valdez

DIVISION GOALS 05 Division Goals

When I discovered that writing a letter could earn me service hours, I took it as an opportunity to finally reconnect an old friendship. My friend, Bradner, and I used to be very close, but he lives in California and under the circumstances we both were in, we drifted apart. I decided to write a letter to Bradner and mail it, and I found that it was a fun way of reconnecting an old friendship. I’m glad that I had this opportunity to rediscover the lost art of writing letters to others. - Shemaiah San Agustin, Silverado

Being able to meet the Kiwanis was an honor. It meant a lot to me because I was inspired to continuously be active in service throughout my lifetime. The nice gentlemen at Kiwanis were open-minded, kind-hearted, and a great example to our youth that love for service lasts forever. With great service, come great responsibilities. The gentlemen were able to keep contact with their lifelong friends, which was a heartwarming sight. Friendships truly do transcend lifetimes. - Nethelie Ruby Cajeras, Valley

Before actually meeting them, I already had an image of them. To me, I thought they were these very serious people who were really strict. When I went to their Kiwanis meeting, I was not expecting a very cute group of youthful people. They still had their youthful energy and told many jokes and stories. Unfortunately, the majority of my board and I had to leave to attend the Summer Conference meeting at 12:30 so we had to leave early. That left a great impression on us within those 30 minutes. We hope that we left a great impression on them too within that short amount of time. - Malynee Sackdavone, Valley

Cooking for my family has been a fun pastime during quarantine. Not only has it improved my cooking skills, but seeing the smiles on my family’s faces when they see I’ve made more sweets or food is very rewarding. I’ve made many foods/desserts including Norwegian sponge cake and raisin buns. I would say this has been one of my favorite Key Club activities! I am thankful for the opportunity to get volunteer hours from home. - Tara Pourpak, Coronado

During quarantine I’ve had a lot of time to try new recipes. Trying new foods is really fun. Cooking gets me and my family together. We get to enjoy some family time together, while also trying some delicious food. - Bryson Yamada, Coronado

For me, plarn is the best way to increase my service hours. It’s really convenient for me since my family always keeps all the grocery bags, so I figured, why not recycle it into something useful? since i’m always home all the time, I would just make as many balls of plarn until I run out of plastic bags. It’s a great, time-efficient service project for those who have a lot of time on their hands! - Joshua Francia, Coronado

I think dog toy making is one of our best options for getting hours during quarantine! Most people probably have old t-shirts that they want to get rid of, and I think this was a great way to use them and recycle the material. They were also super easy to make; all I had to do was braid strips of the t-shirt a few times to create them. Making them was a great way to pass time while also getting my hours. I hope the dogs enjoy their new toys! - Haylie Lee, Coronado

Making masks was super fun! The process at first took some trial and error, but when I had them all figured out it was really easy and fun to make them. The best part of the masks was giving them out to people who needed them, like my Grandma, family members, or friends when we were out. With stores like JOANN’s opening, I can now get the proper fabric and materials to make more. - Reagan Caroll, Coronado I’ve always wanted to attend Key Club Int’l convention, but the expenses were always way too much for me. But when they announced Summer Leadership Conference as a “convention”, I knew this was my chance to experience it! I signed up for live workshops I was interested in, such as Squads Abroad and Thirst Project. My favorite session was definitely the Recognition Session on Day 2 as I got to see the different districts around the globe and what they’re doing for their communities. It really put into perspective just how massive and influential KCI is, and I’m so glad I signed up for SLC. - Fiona Dimailig, Coronado
