INTRODUCTION From Our LTG Hello Seamonkeys!
*
My name is Johansen Pico, and I am extremely excited to work with all of you this year! Who knows what the upcoming year may bring us, but one thing is certain, it’s going to be a year full of memories, new people, new connections, and most importantly, a year full of service. I am currently 15 years old and I’m going to be an upcoming junior at Northwest CTA, majoring in Biotechnology. I have been involved in Key Club ever since my freshman year; before being elected into office, I served my home club as a Secretary. Through my term as a Secretary, my passion for Key Club has grown to what it has become today. Now as a Lieutenant Governor, I will serve this division with a diligent heart and a hardworking mind in order to BEE the best we all can be. This year I plan to establish strong relationships with the club and the division – one of Key Club International’s core values is inclusiveness, so no one should ever feel left out when it comes to our lovely division! By visiting clubs, communicating often, and being available to anyone who needs help, I know that we can all work together to better serve our communities. As we look forward to the new school year (or not quite yet for some of you), you can also look forward to an exciting, fun-filled year of service. Outside of Key Club, I love to browse the internet, go out with my friends, watch The Office, and learn new things. Now how about you? I would love to get to know you all, so don’t be afraid to approach me! After an event, or if you happen to run across me at the store, I would love to have a conversation: I don’t bite! Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Lieutenant Governor for the 2012-2013 Administrative year. I look forward to seeing our growth as a division, and as competent and caring leaders. In service,
Johansen Pico Division 28 West Lt. Governor

ARTICLES Club Articles MAY 4TH West Youth Relay for Life
Northwest CTA Two weeks ago was a night to remember at Spring Valley High School. The event that took place was Relay for Life in which many clubs and organizations participated in. Relay For Life is an event where it helps communities celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remembered lost loved ones, and fight against the disease. Many clubs, including Northwest Key Club, fundraised money for the American Cancer Society by selling Korean BBQ. By raising money, we are taking a step in saving many peoples' lives. At the event, we took a survivors lap to honor those who have faced cancer
in their lives and celebrate the achievements they have made in order to win the fight against it. There was also a Luminaria ceremony where we remember the ones we have lost to the disease and by doing so, we light candles that spell out hope to show that others out there dealing with this situation still have a chance. Aside from that, not only is it great service, but it's also a time to create memories and connect with one another. Overall, this was a memorable night and it is worth attending to next year.

ARTICLES MAY 12TH Kiwanis Kite Day Kiwanis Kite Day went down this Saturday and I had an absolute blast! My arms are still horrendously sun burnt but I couldn’t have asked for a better time. Turn-out rates were great, and I’m glad for that. I think little events like these get overlooked, but they’re a really good opportunity to promote our relationship with our sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs, as well as each other. RTC and Fall Rally are fun and all, don’t get me wrong. But it’s days like these, where a group of dedicated people get together to make a difference is what reminds why I joined Key Club. And although I suck at tying knots, suck isn’t even adequate way to describe how awful I am at it, really. I lit up seeing these little kids with their kites flying higher than I would’ve even thought possible, and watching them tug their mother’s shirt sleeves towards the decoration booth (one girl drew the Filipino flag on her kite, I thought that was hilarious) it was awesome, and since it’s a Kiwanis Event, there were kids from Key Clubs all over town, some of whom I haven’t seen in months, so that was really nice to catch up and again, be reminded of
PAGE 6
how much Key Club and Kiwanis do outside of NWCTA. During break sessions we got some food for ourselves, played Frisbee, slapped sun burnt backs, basked in the sun or hid in the shade for fear of getting dark. All in all it was a day of simple pleasures, honestly. It’s beginning to feel like summer, and having an afternoon with your friends is the best way I could think of to spend it, and it’s not every day you literally get to watch the effect of the service you give go beaming off into the wind with a kite you help made. I highly, highly encourage everyone to come out next year, along with the Kite Day Assembly, to try and make this event bigger and better. I love how community driven it is, it’s at Aliante Park with everyone to see, and is available to literally anyone passing by, everything is free and is done out of the warmness of the hearts of the volunteers. So please, I plead of you, come and show your heart, your Key Club spirit, and have a great time doing it!

ARTICLES June 9th Leukemia and Lymphoma 5K and 1 Mile This was the first 5k and 1 mile that the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has held in Southern Nevada and it was a pretty good turnout, runner wise- for their first event. The event was held at Kellogg Zaher Park, where Lite the Nite is held. The track for the race went all the way around the park and even through a short tunnel near the end. There were very few volunteers who attended, but since it was a small event the number we had was just right. They gave us pin on buttons and purple foam fingers when we got there. Kyrsta and I used the fingers to point runners in the right direction.
Since we found this not very exciting for the runners we started playing Kpop and doing some of the dances to amp up the runner’s spirits. We got some applause and a few strange looks, but the dancing did help them push forward just a little bit more. Even though the sun was beating down on us the whole time we kept cheering on the runners until the very last one finished. Sadly at the end we had to return the foam fingers, but in a way it was a good thing since it is impossible to drive with one of them on. It was a great event that supported a great cause and I look forward to attending again next year.

ARTICLES June 9th End-of-the-Year Social
Ed. W. Clark
Walking into Desert Breeze Park for our end of the year park social, a feeling of elation – and fear – poured over me. The first event planned and run by all of us on the new board! The success of this event would be the general club’s first impression of us, so we all hoped it would go well, and that the leaving seniors especially had a good time. Though the event started off slow while people greeted each other and chewed on some giant sandwiches brought in by our treasurer, the calm was quickly broken by a chaotic game of capture the flag where the rules weren’t effectively set, and people ran amok. Oops! Luckily, people seemed to have a good time, and laughed as they proceeded to what may have been the main attraction of the day: Pieing their officers in the face. Three of us were chosen from a poll on Facebook, and members could pay a dollar to rub whipped cream all over our face and hair! After we had time to wash ourselves off a little bit, the water gun and balloon wars began, and no one escaped dry. After we cleaned up the rubber pieces off the ground, people seemed reluctant to leave, and everyone was laughing. Mission accomplished!
Michael kwok, SAA Music for Senior Citizens Last month, Clark’s Key Club went to the Las Vegas Life Center to play music for senior citizens. In attendance were five Key Club members, including me, who were also members of Clark’s orchestra. For an hour and a half, we played various popular tunes for the senior citizens.
Watching their faces light up with joy as we played songs such as Memory, or You Send Me, was a joyful experience. This was my second time performing for them, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

ARTICLES June 1st
Doris Reed Elementary School Carnival Cimarron-Memorial
One of our last events was the Doris Reed Elementary School Carnival. It was so much fun helping out in the carnival! We helped with games, played with cute little kids, and the most fun part was we got to spray kids with water. It was extremely hot that day so playing with water was just the best! The carnival was held on Friday June 1, 2012 so it was about a few days before school ended.
The kids were so excited for summer and wanted to have a great last week of school so the carnival was perfect. Seeing all the kids, family, and teachers all have a fantastic time together was made me remember why I love community service and most of all Key Club. I had the best time with the best people!

June 2nd Hershey Track and Field nd
On June 2 , 2012, I participated in a Hershey’s Track and Field event at Rancho High School. It was a great experience! I helped set up for the event and afterwards, I timed the runners that ran each event. All the runners were young kids, and it was inspiring to see such determined young people. They all seemed so motivated to win their races!
Apart from helping out with the event, I also got to connect with fellow key clubbers from other schools. Overall, this was very fun event and I’m glad that I spent my Saturday there

ARTICLES May 24th End-of-the –Year Banquet In this picture you can see West CTA's current Senior Representative, Phil Mercurio, giving an award to the current Vice President of West CTA's Key Club, Ashley Reyes. At this end of the year banquet, we were rewarding those who went up and BEEyond the standard qualifications of being a key club member. Although the picture looks posed because of their happiness on both their faces, it's just really because they love each other as Ohana. To see this kind of love from my officers really warms my heart as one can see they genuinely are appreciative of one another for doing their jobs so well. The banquet itself was a success freeing the members and officers from stress from just completing their AP exams the weeks before. Many members had showed up and even some of the officers from Northwest CTA had come along to root their sister school on!
West CTA
Andrew Cho, President
The officers are preparing to arrange a Summer Board meeting. We are planning to brainstorm ideas on how to keep members serving through the vacation. For an example, we could help Spring Preserve, Hospitals, Vons, and etc. There are many things events each member can do. As Key Club we don’t stop serving our community because it’s summer. The officers are going to talk about fundraisers, Relay for Life, RTC, DCM(s), Fall Rally, DCON, and more KC events. Fundraising ideas are a bakery sale, hot chocolate, lanyards, shirts, and more to come. We are going to promote our club to other students. Also we are trying to find events for 20122013 school year.
Club Updates SPVHS Key Club is going to be strict on DCM(s) because of the new rules. We are telling the officers/members only 12 people may attend and be 10 minutes prior to the DCM. As a club we want to be closer to our members, so we are going to plan more socials and gatherings. Interacting with members might help us keep members from dwelling. There will be more updates coming, and we’ll keep you informed. That is it for our June article.

RECOGNITION CLUB OF THE MONTH (CotM) CIMARRON-MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
MEMBER OF THE MONTH (MoM) Sam Tao, Ed. W. Clark Freshman Sam Tao went above and beyond what was expected of him at the Clark Blood Drive hosted on May 23, 2012. Instead of only completely his tasks and instructions, he took the initiative in organizing a wait list system for the whole blood drive and worked other member's jobs as well. Sam was one of two members who dedicated the entire day to helping out at the blood drive. His efforts helped everything run smoothly, correctly, and most important, efficiently. Without his help, the blood drive would have been a mess.
