A Word From Our LTG Hello Seamonkeys! Summer has been flying by for me, but so far it has been great. Coming home from International Convention, I have new service ideas to bring to the table, as well as inspiration to continue on serving the division I have come to know and love. At International Convention, I have met many new faces and all of the attendees had one thing in common: a passion for service. This feeling of unity through service is one thing I would like to bring to our division – the feeling of inclusion through service. Ohana. Family. Together this summer, let us strive to truly be united in service. Whether it be cleaning up your neighborhood parks, reading to children, volunteering at a hospital, or any other way that you are able to serve your homes, schools, and communities. As the school year is right around the corner, it’s time to start preparing for our first club meetings and recruiting new members to join the wonderful organization we have come to know as, Key Club. Making an appearance during your school’s Freshman Orientation and using social media to your advantage can increase attendance during your club’s first general meeting. Find ways to make everyone feel included and emphasize the bond we all have through service. Before vacation ends, your club’s Board of Directors should get together and start planning for a year full of service and fun. This year, Division 28 West can reach new heights and serve like we have never served before. I look forward to seeing every club progress and BEE the best they all can be. In service,

Johansen Pico Division 28 West Lt. Governor

Greetings, Seamonkeys! Summer is already halfway gone, can you believe it? During the past month, I have started to volunteer at a hospital in the valley, and it has been such a rewarding experience. From what I see in the context of the submitted articles, there are service opportunities everywhere, so don’t be afraid to look. Service to the community is always encouraged! Again, thank you all for continuing to submit articles and visuals, because truly, this could not have been possible without all of your hard work! I received positive feedback after the release of last month’s division newsletter (hooray!), and I really appreciate the

support. The July Joint DCM is just around the corner, and I’m excited to meet everyone who is attending! If you have any questions, concerns, or if you just want to hit me up, send me an email! See you guys soon and enjoy the rest of summer. Swimming in service,

Elizabeth Quan

ARTICLES Club Articles The largest Latino family convention in the United States was held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and 3 members from our school, including myself, Phil Mercurio (Senior Rep), and Jerry Files (member). In this photo (right), Jerry Files in the PBS part of the EXPO explained to children and some adults how they could win a free tablet with educational games already installed. Jerry also showed small children, usually under 8, how to play the games on the tablets and gave away free promotional cards to give the app to anybody that had an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Overall, the EXPO was a great success and getting to share a service event with our sister school Northwest made it an even better experience!

Solarbration: June 21st Man the Solarbration Hydration Station, the Sun’s a-coming! The Solarbration Festival was held on the Summer Solstice, June 21st, at the City of Henderson City Hall Amphitheater. The event comprised of “a collection of art, technology, outreach to promote renewable energy, inspire conservation, and support sustainable communities.” With attendees about, I held a booth that exchanged purchased tickets for water. The heat wasn’t to the point of attendees desperate for water, but I managed to get a lot of sales. I admired the atmosphere of the event: the live music, the advocacy of energy, and the volunteer booths. I look forward to the second annual event with expectations that will shine throughout the Las Vegas community.

Jordan Afaga, President 2 NorthWest CTA

On Thursday, July 21, 2012, I volunteered at the Solarbration Event that took place at the City of Henderson Events Plaza in Henderson, Nevada. The annual Las Vegas Solar Festival blends art, technology, and exceeds to advertise renewable energy, inspire conservation, and support sustainable communities. With that being said, the Solar Festival premiered renewable energy and arts in Southern Nevada. I took great satisfaction and volunteered in the first shift. The first shift was the set up shift. As a volunteer, I helped set up the information booth, as well as booths for the vendors, and prepared snacks for the volunteers and vendors. While being outdoors in the blazing heat, the amazing event directors made sure everyone was hydrated and in good condition. By the end of my shift, I was extremely exhausted, but knowing that I put my great efforts of community service into this great event, it transitioned my exhaustion into satisfaction. I met many wonderful people, including key club members and had a great time. I enjoyed volunteering for the Solarbration Event.

July updates The officers recently had a meeting to discuss fundraising ideas, membership recruitment, and etc. The officers came to the conclusions about how to get people interested in joining Key Club at the upcoming Freshman Orientation. We also had a service event at the Vons Supermarket, where members asked for donations from shoppers to help fundraise for Prostate Cancer research. Now we’re in preparation for more service events at Vons and on the search for more service opportunities. Officers are going to try plan more officer meetings before school starts. We are also aware of the dues of this year. Our officers are going to prepare and remind our Key Clubbers to pay the dues.

When I overheard my Key Club advisor saying that they are in need of volunteers for the class of 2012 graduation ceremony of NWCTA, I quickly volunteered myself. Since I was going to the graduation ceremony anyway, might as well just use that time to also help out in any way I can. At first, my job was just to hand out programs to the friends and family as they were walking in. As it turns out, the event coordinator also needed help on stage as the graduation ceremony was going on. I was much honored to do help out on stage. My job on stage was to hand the index card from the student to the reader.

Dues play an essential role and we want our club to stay an official, good-standing Key Club. We are still promoting Key Club to friends and schoolmates. Officers are deciding what to fundraise this upcoming 2012-2013 school year. The last officer meeting was July 2, 2012. We discussed about events, cheer ideas, fundraising, and RTC/Fall Rally. This is pretty much the highlights of what we went over at our meeting. We also talked about our first meeting, but we can go more into detail with that when school comes closer. When we go back to school we might start our first fundraiser of the year with lanyards. There will be more updates coming, and we’ll keep you informed. That is it for our July article.

Lexus Wong, VP 4 Spring Valley

Northwest Graduation: July 19th My experience at the graduation ceremony was very heartwarming and exciting all at the same time. Since I’m going to be a senior this coming school year, it made me a bit sad thinking that I’m almost done with high school, but it also made me super excited because in the next year, I will be able to experience the same thing.

Kiwanis Fireworks Booth: July 4th This summer has been pretty uneventful. Sitting at home and watching Legend of Korra at 2am isn’t exactly the most exciting summer. Working at the Kiwanis Fireworks Booth was the most interaction I’ve had all summer. It was the first time I have ever step foot in a fireworks booth. Quickly, Ms. Wong, our advisor, taught us the tools of the trade. We quickly adjusted and we were selling fireworks like pros. Not only did we sell fireworks, we all had to promote the booth and wave signs on the sidewalk. Even though we were in the scorching heat, we had fun dancing for passing cars. We did manage to bring a couple people to stop by. Working at the Kiwanis Fireworks Booth was fun and gratifying; we raised money for a terrific organization and had fun doing it. I can’t wait to do it again next year!

Sheldon wong, member 6 Ed W. Clark Every year in the beginning of July our Kiwanis club always offers a volunteer opportunity for us to sell fireworks for the upcoming 4th of July to raise money for the Kiwanis club. This year was my first year volunteering with them for this event and I am glad I got around to doing it. I volunteered on July 4th which, from what I heard, was the busiest day they had for selling fireworks. At first when I arrived there didn’t seem to be much business, which I thought was because of the rainy weather. After an hour or so we started getting a few customers and I didn’t think we would get much more. Soon enough we had a lot of customers and we were running out of fireworks very fast. It was a bit hectic towards the end but it was a great day and we raised a lot of money. Doing events like this with our Kiwanis is good for strengthening our bond with them. We will have plenty more events in the future with them so look forward to it.

Marcus Castile, Vp 7 Northwest CTA
