A Word from Our

LTG Hello Seamonkeys

I hope everyone had an amazing time at Region Training Conference – everyone’s spirit and positive energy inspired me to continue my journey as a Lieutenant Governor and serve my home, school, and community. I hope RTC gave you all new perspectives on Key Club International, and also gave your club new ideas for future projects and fundraisers. Our RTC would not have been successful without all of the advisors, chaperones, workshop presenters, Cimarron-Memorial High School, and every one of the attendees being so cooperative during the event. Division 28 West has been improving at a rapid rate ever since the school year began. In September, 15 out of 16 Monthly Report Forms have been submitted: the highest turn-out rate for MRF submissions this year, and even exceeds submission rates from the last two years. MRFs allow better analysis of clubs, and through analysis, I will be able to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses of clubs and capitalize on them. Being able to set up a successful year for the coming years will allow this division to grow and shine in the coming years. I know that we can do it, Seamonkeys! Keep on serving; see you all at Fall Rally.  In service, Johansen Pico Division 28 West Lt. Governor

Division Leadership Team from the editor Hello Seamonkeys! I hope you guys had a blast at RTC 2012, because I certainly did! Thank you to all who made the event run so smoothly and to all of our attendees for their cooperation. It was such a pleasure meeting people from all over Region 5 that day, and in a few weeks, we will all have the opportunity to meet people from all over Cali-Nev-Ha at‌ FALL RALLY! Riding roller coasters, cheering with all of Division 28 West for the spirit stick, and most importantly raising money for PTP will be another amazing experience. See you all soon!

Pediatric Trauma Program Fall Rally South What is PTP? Pediatric Trauma, or unintentional injury, remains the leading cause of death among children ages 14 and under in the United States. More children die from unintentional injuries than all other childhood diseases combined. In addition, injury results in the deaths of approximately fifteen children per day in our country. Many of these deaths can be prevented!

Statistics • Among children ages 14 and under, it is estimated that 40% of deaths and 50% of nonfatal unintentional injuries occur in and around the home

• Children ages 4 and under are at greater risk of unintentional injury‐related death and disability and account for 45% of the deaths among children ages 14 and under

• It is estimated that as many as 90% of unintentional injuries can be prevented

• Each year, injuries to children ages 14 and under result in 234,000 hospitalizations, nearly 8.4 million emergency room visits and nearly 11.7 million visits to physiciansʹ offices

• The majority of childhood injuries occur between May and August • It is estimated that as many as 90% of unintentional injuries can be prevented

• Every day, more than 39,000 children are injured seriously enough to require medical treatment, totaling more than 14 million children each year

Region 5 Training Conference : October 13th

S

What can I say? RTC 2012 was just simply AMAZING. To the informative workshops, learning divisional cheers, and of course, the spirit rally, each and every moment was all the most, memorable. It gave new incoming key clubbers an insight on what key club is all about. Extending everyone's knowledge about what key club is as a school club and even more was fabulous. After attending DCON 2012 and seeing the newly active Lt. Gov, Alyssa Yocom in action was also a great moment of my RTC experience. I think we can all agree that our spirits were sky high and everyone cheered their hearts out at the spirit rally, and it truly showed! I think every club deserves a spirit stick for that. All in all, I am glad to say I attended RTC 2012 and it was truly great learning more about service projects/working on actual projects, meeting new people, and showing our spirit together as a big family.

To start off, Regional Training Conference or RTC was an amazing experience. Seeing all those people from different schools representing their key club was a sight to see. The spirit that everyone had was inspiring as well. RTC also held workshops explaining many topics of key club and the Kiwanis foundation. Key club has this motto that we use, “Caring – our way of life.” When we live by this motto, it can really change the way you see things. Caring can come in a lot of ways, service, purified love, and unwavering attention. Moving on to another highlight of RTC, the spirit rally! Cheering and representing our schools in the district was amazing and loud. The spirit rally was a competition to see who deserved the final prize, the spirit stick. The school who won the region 5 spirit stick was Liberty High school. The school who won District 28 west was Northwest CTA. The school who won District 28 South was Rancho High school. In the end, RTC was a blast. I recommend all key clubbers to go. It’s an amazing experience and a memory you will never forget.

Hey! My name is Patrick and I am a sophomore at West Career and Technical Academy. This is my first year with Key Club and going to RTC pretty much reassured me that this was a great idea! RTC was the most spectacular thing I have ever gone to in my entire life! There were so many schools there! I had no idea Key Club was so spread out. Everyone’s cheers were phenomenal, spirited, and loud! I mean LOUD, LOUD. West Tech had an epic spirit battle with Southwest Career and Technical Academy. I am not sure who won, but to me it didn’t matter! I got to see my old friends and make so many new ones from different schools! We also had the opportunity of learning about the Kiwanis family and the different district projects. I especially liked when we learned about the Eliminate Project. Johansen just delivered the message of the Eliminate Project so passionately that I had the greatest urge to just help volunteer in any way I could. I wanted to help bring an end to MNT! Being that this was my first time at RTC, the unified Key Club Spirit was just overwhelming! Together, we could make a difference in the world. The entire world. Key Club has inspired me to do my best and have a positive impact on people’s lives.

ARTICLES Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk

S

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk was a really great experience for me for two reasons: one, my mom had her first round of chemotherapy to cure her breast cancer two days before and she walked the entire 3.4 miles without stopping, and two, because so many members from our club showed up to support a great cause. The environment was really positive and uplifting. Seeing thousands of people coming together in support of something that affects so many lives was a beautiful thing. This event really hit home for me because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year and is currently going through chemotherapy to cure it. She and the rest of my family were really excited to see everyone from our Key Club at the walk.
