child unique With Thanksgiving approaching, Alameda Key Clubbers decided to take time out of their Thanksgiving Break to give back to their community by helping a local preschool with their annual Child Unique dinner. Before the event started, our club played a couple games of Mafia to get to know each other better while bonding together as a club. Helping decorate Elks Lodge with Christmas lights, we greeted guests at the front entrance and helped them to their seats. Later, we helped organize the food guests brought into 3 separate categories, including vegetarian, meat, and bread, to make it easier for guests to find specific dishes. Although we quickly got tired from cleaning all the crock pots and food containers from the dinner, our evening was filled with laughter and jokes, strengthening our Alameda Key Club bond. As the guests began to leave, we started to clean up the space by throwing away garbage bags of trash and bringing down all the decorations. After leaving the event, we all made it to Itea to continue bonding as a club and to celebrate our service to the community that day. ISSUE 1.8 | PAGE 13

stanton tutoring Starting from the beginning of December until January, Castro Valley has helped and will continue to help tutor kids from Stanton Elementary School with their school work every Tuesday. Upon arrival, volunteers were warmly welcomed by the school principal. In the school library, we were greeted with 8 bright kids who were timid and shy at first, but quickly grew more social and unafraid to ask questions. When I felt that I was having a difficult time explaining math to a girl in simpler terms, the principal kindly helped me teach the kid. I have always enjoyed working with kids and it’s satisfying to see them make a little more progress. This has been my first time teaching kids and I learned that it is not easy; but with more practice over the weeks, I hope to get better and help make a small change in our community. pictured above: Castro Valley members helping out at the Uhuru PieMaking event. unicef Over the last two months Key Clubbers from Encinal collected money for UNICEF. Members gave their own time and money to help a good cause. Some brought in boxes filled to the brim with bills, and others brought in boxes weighed down by coins. Once the boxes were collected after about two months, each officer took home a few boxes and counted. Overall, our club collected a pretty hefty chunk of change.
