dne's note

Hello Llamas! I can not believe it's already November?? This year is really flying by! I hope everyone who attended Fall Rally North had an AMAZING time, and I also hope it sparked your passion for Key Club and grew your Division 2 South Lavender Llama spirit! :) This edition of the Llama Legends is inspired by various autumn elements, like falling leaves and shades of yellow/orange/red. Please enjoy reading about what our Division has been up to, and let me know if you have any feedback/questions! I am always thrilled to talk to people, and you can even ask me school related things, like MATH! Sincerely, Vy Truong Division 2 South News Editor ISSUE 1.6 | PAGE 05

sosp focus: kiwanis family focus background November's focus is on the branches of the Kiwanis Family tree—K-Kids, Builder’s Club, Key Club, Circle-K, Kiwanis, and Aktion Club. Being part of the family means providing service and funds to the Kiwanis Children’s Foundation and the CNH Foundation. Together, we can all work to build a better community and future.

service events & fundraisers This month, your club could plan a ribbon lei making event to give back to sponsoring Kiwanis clubs. A fundraiser idea to consider is a service action event, where Key Clubbers are auctioned off to a Kiwanis member to volunteer their time and services.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of Key Club? A: Promoting spirit and doing whatever you can to get everyone in a great mood is my favorite aspect of key club. The club’s values regarding leadership, friendship and overall happiness is what makes Key Club so enjoyable and fun. It’s a great way to take a break from reality and use that energy to make other people happy. Q: What kind of service events do you like to attend? A: I like “behind the scenes” events where you’re indirectly providing service to others, such as packing supplies for those in need of them. However, service alone motivates me to love myself. Q: What is your favorite Key Club memory? A: Even though I’m new to Key Club, my favorite memory so far was going to the spirit social because I got to connect with other people from the district. Everyone was accepting, supportive and friendly! I’m also looking forward to my first FRN and the future events to come.

oakland peace lantern festival Alameda Key Clubbers had the amazing opportunity to help out at the Oakland Peace Lantern Festival on the First Day of Autumn, September 23, 2018, at the Lake Merritt Amphitheater. At the start of the event, we helped decorate the amphitheater and constructed floats so that the lanterns that people made could be sent out onto the lake. This activity helped to bond many members as they assisted each other in cutting and taping materials together! Later we assisted at tables, encouraging people to make and decorate lanterns and unleashing their creativity. Many members were inspired by the performances and artwork that was present. The coordinators at the event were generous and provided sandwiches and spring rolls for the members to enjoy. When it started getting dark, we helped send the lanterns that people made out onto the lake. At the end of the day, Alameda Key Clubbers enjoyed helping the community and had fun along the way, gaining teamwork skills.

rockridge out and about On September 16, Arroyo Key Club members went to the Rockridge Out and About event in Oakland at noon. We volunteered with the California Revels and promoted their Christmas shows by passing out flyers on the festival grounds. Additionally, we introduced the basic information of the shows. The shows, named “The Ancient Mysteries of Andalusian Spain,” tells the story of the Muslims, Jews, and Christians’ celebrations of celestial bodies through the Revels’ performances of songs, dance, and poetry. We separated into two groups and passing out flyers in different places. Though we did receive rejections, surprisingly, we were able to hand out more flyers than expected. An element that attracted a vast number of people was the discount code, which was included in the back of the flyer. In fact, we ran out of flyers much earlier than expected. The head volunteer had a good impression on the volunteers, and invited us to their future events.

preparing for frn In the spirit of FRN, Castro Valley held an event where officers and members came out to make tutus and leis. Although it was an SAT test day, some test-takers still showed up to help make merchandise. What seemed like a tedious workday turned out to be a day filled with laughter and jokes as we worked through the hours. The first few hours felt slow but as we got used to our tasks, our hands started to make things by muscle memory, and we were able to socialize while doing our job. By the end of the day, we ended up with a pile of brilliant tutus and leis. With some time left, some officers started working on spirit sticks to represent CV’s spirit. Officers are fired up to sell our newly made merchandise after seeing such satisfying results. All we’re waiting for now is for the day of FRN to arrive so we can go all out in our lavender spirit gear.

meals on wheels This month our club returned to Meals on Wheels to help deliver more meals. We hopped in our cars and drove all around Alameda and delivered meals to people in need. This is Encinal’s second time helping, but you don’t need to wait for a club event to help out. Honestly, they need the help. So please, if you have some free time, go help your local Meals on Wheels deliver meals.

back to school For the month of September, many members of our home club helped out at our schools back to school night. Here some of our members helped out in childcare running games, movies, and art tables, while some acted as tour guides for parents around our school, and some helped out selling food to parents. The night was long and tiring, but in the end we got a lot done.

druids' lab On September 24, 2018 the San Lorenzo High Key Clubbers joined our school’s “Druids” Club in their Monday Garden. Our Key Club members assisted the Druids in tidying up and maintenance in the one campus garden, Fishman’s forest, and nursery. The two clubs took part in watering all of the plants, cleaning up garbage or dead plants, and removing invasive plants or overgrown branches. The Clubs also took part in preparation for future Druids’ Beautification Day and the Wednesday labs and Friday recycling.
