March: Monthly Member of the Month:

Edelya Borges, Vanguard College Prep

This member has been one of the most dedicated and passionate members I’ve seen this year in Key Club. She is always looking to help improve her home club in whatever way she can and has come up with new ideas that were unique to the club. Although she is only a member, she has volunteered for over 150 hours this year alone, and I am extremely proud of how much she has helped her home club this year. I hope to hear her climb even bigger challenges with her club next year.

Officer of the Month: Jorge Yepez, Riverbank This officer has been the stand-in officer for the club president for a few months as the president had other priorities to take care of first. This officer has done a great job attending as many events as he could on top of his school’s vigorous drama program’s play schedule. Whenever I see him at events, he’s always up to helping out as much as he could and dedicates himself to keeping the club he serves in the loop. This officer has improved a lot since the beginning of the term and I am proud of how much he has grown in his experiences.

Division 46 North | Page 7

Recognition Club of the Month: Vanguard College Prep This club never fails to surprise me in terms of how active their members are. February was a dull month for service events for most clubs, including this club, but they had so many members help out at that they accumulated a total of 208 service hours at merely 2 service events alone! Their fundraisers always turn out very well too, and they created Valentine Grams to end up fundraising $262, making this fundraiser very successful. I’m so proud of how far this club has come in this past term and I hope they never stop being so passionate for Key Club!

Advisor of the Month: Brent Burnside, Enochs This advisor has done a lot to help the club he advises. He's been a great resource for his Key Club to find new service events to help out or to plan new fundraisers. Whenever he's available, he attends their club and board meetings and puts in his two cents about the activities the Key Club is getting involved in and provides great insight to new ideas. He’s kept up great communication with the club he helps out with to suggest new events or connect them to more resources to plan fundraisers. I’m glad that this advisor has taken the initiative to be more involved with his Key Club this year because he has been great at helping them out, and I hope he will continue to do so in the future as well. ey Club was the epitome of my high school career. Joining as a freshman, I didn't know anyone else in it. But then I met others who would become some of my closest friends. I also met a few advisors and adults who helped me become a better person and leader. These individuals were always there for me, and I'm so grateful to this wonderful organization for unlocking new doors for me. Key Club wasn't just a club for me; it was something that I could look to for new friendships and connections to the community.

My weekends were always full because of Key Club, and I loved it. Instead of being lazy at home, I donated my mornings and afternoons to helping out at service events around the community. Helping out at service events certainly made my passion grow, for both Key Club and volunteering. Because of Key Club, I was able to learn a lot that will help me in the future, including how to hold meetings, how to become better at public speaking, and how to plan/organize events. Without Key Club, I wouldn't have learned these skills. Without Key Club, I would still be that shy freshman. Without Key Club, I wouldn't have met all of you, D46N Ohana. I love all of you Red Pandas!!

hroughout the past 4 years I have loved being a part of Key Club. I have seen myself grow tremendously through my involvement in this organization. My favorite thing about Key Club is the fact that this organization places a huge emphasis on student leadership. I have never been a part of another organization where the students do all of the work.

Whether it is planning a massive division fundraiser to coordinating service projects with community leaders; everything is done by us – the students. I have never once regretted being a part of this wonderful organization that truly embraces student leadership!

I

don’t know if there was a single moment or event in Key Club that I could define as my “Key Club moment” or as what really opened my eyes. But some of my most memorable moments or events in Key Club are: Bike Camp and Breakfast with Santa. I think the reason why these two events stand out to me the most are because they were centered on kids and I really like kids. Volunteering at Bike Camp, even though that was m whole spring break, was honestly worth it and really fun. The Society of Disabilities set up this event, and the focus of Bike Camp was to teach disabled children how to ride bikes.

Even before this event, I had already seen and known how much “good” out club does for our community but this event further solidified that idea for me. This club does so much good and most people have never heard of it. It’s honestly like a hidden treasure and I’m very glad I discovered it when I did.

Key Club was one of my best decisions in high school. Not only did I make great friends, I also learned to love volunteering and service. Over the years, I attended a lot of service events, meetings, and training conferences, but the event that stood out the most to me was Fall Rally. I attended Fall Rally twice, and each time it amazed me how many people were a part of Key Club and had the same passion for service that I did. oining

Fall Rally showed me that even as students in high school we can truly make a

difference in our communities, and I highly recommend attending Fall Rally to every Key Clubber so they can be inspired to be more active in Key Club and to serve their communities.

hroughout my four years in Key Club, I've had a lot of fun from volunteering, planning events, meeting new people, and making new friends. While there were times that Key Club was a little stressful, it was definitely worth it to get so involved in such an amazing organization.

so many great memories I have of Key Club, but if I had to choose one part of it from the past four years I would have to say it was all of the Bowl-A-Thons. I enjoyed each Bowl-A-Thon because it helped raise a lot of money and it is also one of the most enjoyable events in key club. All of the Bowl-A-Thons throughout the past four years helped raise money for various organizations like PTP and sometimes helped raise here

are

money for people going to DCON. I enjoyed every

Bowl-A-Thon because I got to hang out with friends while also playing one of my favorite sports. It was also fun because it was very competitive bowling against Key Clubs from other schools. The Bowl-A-Thons made some of my favorite memories of high school.

hroughout my four years in Key Club, I have seen myself grow to the person I am today. Sounds cliché, but Key Club has become my second home. I am truly honored to have been able to be a part of this organization and serve alongside many other passionate leaders. I’ve had an amazing opportunity to be able to serve as Division News Editor this past year; I saw many of YOU grow into leaders.

The happiness and growth in individuals have definitely outweighed the stressful times as an officer. I recommend this organization to everyone. Thank you D46N for the most memorable four years! YOU have all truly inspired me to keep improving and to give more.

Making Cards for the Elderly

Philip Gergis | Enochs High Key Club During our club meeting on February 14th, our club members all brought craft materials in order to make cards to hand out to the elderly. Members were given colored pencils, markers, and paper to make these cards during the meeting. Members who participated made a total of 19 cards and we handed them out at the elderly visit we had on March 4th. The event was a great service project to have and made this meeting much more entertaining than the ones in the past. As a result, our club hopes on having an activity during every meeting from here on out! Overall, making these cards was a great activity and was one of my favorite projects this term! Â

Kiwanis Crab Feed Jorgia Young |Enochs High Key Club With tray ready volunteers served up the crabs to our fellow Kiwanians. It allowed for us to give back to the Kiwanis organization after all the help they have given us. Members helped serve the food and helped with busing tables. They completely support us through our hard worker and help out as much as they can. So thank you to our Kiwanis Group in Modesto without you there is no Key Club! Â

Poetry Foundation

Jorgia Young | Enochs High Key Club Volunteers appreciated the fine English art of poetry. Participants wrote poems and competed with other poets from all over Modesto. Volunteers showed respect and did a good job of representing the Key Club behavior at this event. Members from our club enjoyed this service event, as they were able to enjoy poetry as well as volunteer for a good cause.

On March 19th, the annual Modesto Marathon was held at Downtown, Modesto. Members from the division partook in this event. Each member was assigned to a different booth where they were given specific tasks. The earlier shift blocked off roads and cheered on for the runners as they passed by, while the second shift helped set up various things such as getting medals ready for the members, or pealing the plastic wrappers off water bottles for the runners (as shown in the pictures). Members overall had a great time and enjoyed the event; it has become most of the club’s annual event to attend. Many members said they would like to participate in this event again next year!

OLD & NEW OFFICERS

New Officers

Old Officers

From LTG Crystal Cheng: 1.) Your terms are ending in less than a week! Take this time and continue to support your new officers and help them out with any questions they have and guide them in the right direction if you feel they aren't doing the right thing. They might have more questions to ask you even later after your term ends, so stay in touch with them! I know I still had so many questions as a new officer when I was installed and I was grateful for the past officers' continual support even when she wasn't around anymore. Your "babies" will remember you the more you help them and support them. Don't leave them stressed and confused!

2.) Thank you old officers for all your hard work. I know many of you probably feel "burned out" and are glad for your term to be over, but I guarantee that you will feel nostalgic later on about it and your Key Club experience overall, especially if you were extremely involved throughout the year(s). I am extremely proud of how far we've gone and improved this past year, and I hope to see you excel in other fields in the future if you're a senior, and if you're an underclassman, keep up the great work in school and in other activities you are involved in!

1.) Your term is starting in less than a week! I hope you're all very excited, because this will be a roller coaster journey with both ups and downs. There might be times when you feel ultra stressed and don't know how to sort out your priorities; don't worry, everyone goes through this--just make sure you communicate with a fellow officer in the club board or the Lt. Governor to let them know before your task(s) are due. With Key Club (and everything else, too), the most important thing is COMMUNICATION. Make sure with everything you do in relation to Key Club, communicate with your home club and/or the Lt. Governor about it so everyone stays in the loop. Some key things to remember is that 1) the habits you start at the beginning of the term will not go away at the end of the term, so 2) don't procrastinate, especially at the beginning of the term! You will make it a habit and it won't look good on your home club or the division. 3) Plan out your goals (SMART Goals) at the beginning of the term and keep those goals in mind whenever you are planning something. Lastly, 4) don't be afraid to reach out and ask any of your resources any questions you have. Remember the past officers will be around until the end of the school year, so you still have a bit of time to ask however much you need. Take advantage of this time; they will be gone before you know it if the past officers were seniors! I hope you take this advice to heart (it comes from personal experience) and I wish you the best of luck on your term!!

APRIL is KIWANIS FOUNDATION! “The Kiwanis Foundation serves many charities and programs. Reach out to your local Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis Family members to plan a wonderful joint service event. Here are some service project suggestions to use!” “The District also challenges you to support Kiwanis’s various foundations. Support the Pediatric Trauma Program or the Kiwanis Family House in order to promote the foundations.”

Division 46 North | Page 41

“The Pediatric Trauma Program is a program that is special to California, Nevada, and Hawaii! One way you can contribute to PTP is by sewing trauma dolls. Trauma dolls can be donated to your local children’s hospitals. They are used by doctors to explain how surgical procedures work. It is a really great tool and a fun service project to start. Making a trauma doll is an easy as 1-2-3. “

“Encourage and inspire young kids to fall in love with reading! Set a date for collection and make sure to have enough time to advertise the event. Ask a local coffee shop or store if they can sponsor any snacks or little gifts for those who donate books. Then have members and adults box the books away and send it to libraries and other organizations such as Open Books. “

“Don’t forget to unite with your Kiwanians for a day of service on April 2nd! On Kiwanis One Day, every club is urged to join with the rest of the Kiwanis Family. Get together with K-Kids, Builders Club, Circle K, Aktion Club and Kiwanis for a day of united service. You can work on service projects such as planting trees or packing food at this Kiwanis event. This is a perfect opportunity for you to bond with your Kiwanis Family. Every club is invited to take part in this momentous event.”

“The Kiwanis Family is made of several branches, Key Club, Kiwanis, Circle K, Builders Club, K-Kids, and Aktion Club. There is always room for expansion in the Kiwanis Family. This month, consider raising money in order to charter a new club of the Kiwanis Family in your community. Organize a one-minute collection period at your school or community center. For the entirety of that minute, ask people to donate to the charter of a new Kiwanis Family member in your community.”

“Teachers are always looking for help! This spring, help out the teachers at your school by cleaning their rooms. In exchange for Key Club’s services, ask for a donation for the Pediatric Trauma Program. This project is not only a great service opportunity, but also a great way to fundraise in your school community!”
