Whether you’ve refined your palette in Jackson Heights, the East Village, Rasholme, or any other hotbed of serious Indian cooking--places where mango lassis flow like wine and ghee is more common than ketchup--Maya is up to the challenge. The dining area at Maya is relatively small, but aesthetically it’s well put together and quite comfortable. Diners have the option of sitting at one of three standard tables which are separated by curtains, or at long low tables with floor seating (these are probably better for larger parties). Upon entering you’ll immediately be greeted by the unmistakable smell(s) which accompany Indian cuisine. Now that your appetite is sufficiently whetted, it’s time to peruse the menu. If you’re familiar with standard Indian fare, you won’t find many surprises here. Instead, the focus is on getting the classic dishes right. PK stresses that, besides sticking to classic recipes fairly rigidly, equal importance is given to the freshness of the ingredients used. Thanks in large part to staying busy seven days a week, the food turnover rate at Maya is incredibly high, so patrons can rest assured that that shrimp or lamb they’re about to bite into hasn’t been sitting around in the back of a refrigerator for too long.

ayoi Kusama is well known for her polka dot paintings. Born in 1929, she went through war and was raised under strict parents when she was young. She suffered from a mental disease (paranoid obsession) throughout her whole life. One day, she still saw an after image of a flower-pattern tablecloth even though she closed her eyes, and after opening her eyes again, they changed into round water drops floated and filled her house. Up to this day, over the age of 80, she is still witnesses polka dots. She drew polka dots and net patterns repeatedly by connecting her obsession and visual hallucination to her work and established a unique art world expanding endlessly. This process itself was a therapy for her. Looking at her works, you can see that the feature of repeated polka dots, net pattern and vivid colors create a very surrealistic mood. Polka dots are drawn on a canvas but sometimes on a human body or clothes, moreover, they spread in a three-dimensional space and become objects. With this, she has produced her works in the field of installation, sculpture, performance, fashion, movie, as well as painting, with the whole world as her stage. Her rise as a world-class artist is due to her provocative and innovative works in her youth in New York. Moving into New York in 1957 and staying until 1972, she made events, environ-

On Daegu Compass’ visit, we were treated to some of the best Maya has to offer. We began with potato samosas served with SUPER spicy chili sauce. We broke open the delicate crust exteriors of the pastries and watched steam come billowing out. The mashed potato filling within is a concoction of herbs and spices innumerable, providing a flavor explosion with every bite. As mentioned above, the chili sauce it is served with packs a major punch, so use it sparingly. Next came a plate of chicken tikka hot out of the real clay tandoori pit. The perfectly cubed chunks of lean chicken practically glowed orange on the plate and had the taste to match its impressive presentation. For our entrees we had three curry dishes: palak paneer (spinach and cheese), chicken tikka masala and lamb curry (the star of the show in my humble opinion) served with baskets of cheese naan and garlic naan. If you’ve never had the pleasure of tearing off a flaky piece of fresh naan, dunking it into a bowl of hot curry and then partaking, well, you’d better run, not walk to Maya right now and “get down” as they* (*I) say. mental works, and nude performance with her large paintings. At the time, she was obsessed with polka dots. She did a performance spray painting polka dots on a naked female model in the middle of the city and another one wearing polka dotted clothes and posing with a polka-dotted horse. In 1966, The 33rd Venice Biennale didn’t invite her, but she held an exhibition outside and was officially invited the next year. After 30 years, they opened the Japanese Pavilion and she was the person who was chosen to display her artwork there. The world of her art attracts public attention with unique stories, and it is very important for modern art history as well. Kusama was also known as a Japanese Amazon, crossing different fields such as literature, movie, fashion, etc. She also addressed issues like liberation, sexuality, and human rights in art along with Donald Judd, Frank Stella and Georgia O’Keeffe. She later wrote novels, had her own magazine, a fashion company, and received worldwide fame as an ‘Avant-garde Warrior’. However, she had a relapse in her mental disorder and came back to Japan in 1973. Afterwards, she opened her studio in front of a mental hospital in Tokyo and devoted herself into producing her works as therapeutic treatments. -continued on p14-

When I first stepped into Labuan Bajo, Flores, in Indonesia, all I could think was, “Is this really it?” To say the town lacks glamour is a bit of an understatement. Visually unappealing might be more accurate. Having just come from the tropical paradise that is the Gili Islands off Lombok, I was expecting a bit more from this supposed dive paradise. Where were the palm trees? Where was the beach? No internet?? A day later, I was on a small traditional Indonesian boat on my way to Komodo National Park. It took 2 hours to make our way to the dive sites. I checked my gear, inflated my BCD, took a single giant stride, and entered the enchanting underwater universe that is Komodo. And I never looked back.

필자가 플로레스의 라부안바조에 처음 발을 디뎠을 때 는 오직 “이게 다야?” 라는 생각 밖에 들지 않았다. 마을 에 화려함이 부족하다고 말하는 것은 다소 과소평가적 인 표현이므로, 시각적으로 매력적이지 않다는 말이 더 정확할 것 같다. 롬복에서 조금 떨어진 길리 섬이라는 트 로피컬 파라다이스에서 방금 건너온 후라 소위 다이빙 파라다이스라고 하는 이 곳에 대해 좀 더 많은 걸 기대하 고 있었다. 야자수와 해변가는 어디있지? 인터넷이 없다 고? 하루 후, 인도네시아 전통 보트를 타고 코모도 국립 공원에 들어섰다. 다이빙 장소까지는 두 시간 정도 소요 되었다. 장비를 확인하고, BCD를 부풀린 뒤 발을 크게 내디뎌 코모도라는 매력적인 수중의 우주에 들어갔다. 그리고 필자는 절대 뒤를 돌아보지 않았다.

Maya’s. Half and full orders of tandoori chicken are available, as well as multiple tandoori sets which include different combinations of naans, curries and desserts. There is an entire menu section dedicated to fried basmati rice, or biryani dishes, as well as a few shrimp dishes for you seafood lovers. No need to shy away if you’re vegetarian or vegan, as there are enough meat/dairy-free options to serve an entire PETA rally (the channa bhaji, or chickpea salad is a standout). Couples sets, group sets for 4, 6 and and other matters where non-Korean speakers might feel overwhelmed. Such generosity may seem crazy, but it will only take one visit to Maya for you to realize that kindness and genuine hospitality are just a part of PK’s make-up--and that’s true whether you’re just eating a quick lunch, or desperately in need of some help with mind boggling paperwork because your phone service has mysteriously been shut off. All this is to say that the service at Maya goes far above and way beyond. To get to Maya, take one of the many buses that go to Kyungpook National University north gate, or take a taxi. Tell your driver to go to “Kyungdae-book-moon”. Once there head up the street closest to the biggest intersection (across from the campus) and keep your eyes up. You’ll see the sign for Maya on the second floor of an otherwise nondescript building. It is open every day from 11am-10pm. Eat up!!

Most entrees fall into the 10,000 Won range. Naans cost between 2,5004,000 Won, depending on your choice of topping. Soft drinks are 2,000 and bottles of beer are 3,000. In the field of collaboration, she has worked with fashion companies, a cell phone company, a shoes company, and in 2012, she collaborated with Louis Vutton. Why is she so popular for famous brands? After touching some common materials such as polka dots, pumpkins, and nets they became art. She approaches them in the way that no one could think about before with ordinary materials. Her works have splendid colors, unusual shapes, or huge scales that they fascinate people. They are loved because they are easy to approach, feel, and understand them without abstrusity found in other common modern art. Maybe it is this reason why companies want to work with the artist beloved by the public. She likes to wear a striking neon red wig and red polka dot clothes, and is still involved with many projects (from the design of Coca Cola’s vending machines to designing the outside of a bus in her hometown). She refuses to be defined by any trend such as minimalism, avant-garde art, or pop-art. In a narrow sense, her path is the process of autobiographical discovery. Putting her into perspective, it is a struggle with her life harassed by pain and desire and hallucination from obsession, and with the world. She has participated in Biennales as an innovative artist dealing with serious themes, and on the other hand, she’s a popular artist at the art market. Overcoming the social handicaps of the times of being a woman, Asian, and a mental patient, she became a world-class artist and still continues to produce artwork which impresses the world, while shuttling between a hospital and her studio. <Yayoi Kusama>, the must-see exhibition in 2013 by the best artist of the century. 쿠사마 야오이 쿠사마야오이전시 아시아최초 대구미술관에서 개인전 쿠사마 야요이는 물방울무늬 회화, 일명 ‘땡땡이 그림 (polka dot)’으로 유명하다. 1929년에 태어나 어렸을 때 전쟁을 겪고 엄격한 부모 밑에서 자란 그녀는 일평생 정 신질환(편집적 강박증)을 앓아왔다. 어느 날 집에 있는 꽃 무늬 식탁보를 보다가 눈을 감아도 그 잔상이 맴도는 것 을 경험한다. 눈을 떠도 집안 가득 온통 동그라미 물방울 로 변해 둥둥 떠다니는 것을 경험한 그녀는 여든이 넘은 오늘날까지도 물방울 무늬와 함께하고 있다. 그녀는 자신 의 강박증, 집착, 환각증세를 작업으로 연결해 물방울 무 늬와 그물망 패턴을 연속적으로 그려 무한히 확장되는 독 특한 예술세계를 구축했다. 그녀에겐 이러한 작업 자체가 곧 치료제였다. 그녀가 해온 작업들을 보면 반복되는 물방 울과 그물망 패턴의 특징, 강렬한 색의 특징들이 매우 초 현실적인 분위기를 자아낸다. 물방울 땡땡이는 캔버스에 그려지기도 하지만 사람 몸 위에 그려지기도 하고 옷에 그 려지기도 하며 3차원 공간에서 펼쳐지기도 하고 오브제가 되기도 한다. 이렇게 그녀는 회화 뿐 만 아니라 설치미술, 조각, 퍼포먼스, 패션, 영화 등 장르나 스타일을 가리지 않 고 세계를 무대로 활발히 작업하고 있다.

콜라보레이션에서도 장르의 경계를 불문하고 유명패션, 핸드폰, 신발 브랜드 등과 함께 수많은 작업을 해온 그녀 는 2012년 루이비통과 협업을 진행했다. 그녀는 왜 유명 브랜드에게 인기일까? 그녀의 손을 거치면 땡땡이, 호박, 그물망이라는 흔한 소재가 예술이 된다. 소재는 흔하지만 그 누구도 이전에 생각하지 못했던 방식으로 다가간다. 색 이 화려하거나, 형태가 특이하거나, 전시 스케일이 크고 특이해서 보는 이들을 한 번에 사로잡는 매력이 있는 그녀 의 작품은 쉽게 다가가서 느끼고 이해하기 쉽고, ‘현대미 술’이 안겨주는 난해함이 적어 많은 이들에게 사랑을 받고 있다. 이런 이유로 기업들도 대중에게 사랑받는 그녀를 선 호하는 것이 아닐까? 눈에 띄는 네온 빛 빨간색 가발과 빨간색 땡땡이 의상을 즐겨 입는 팔순의 이 예술가는 요즘도 다양한 작업(코카콜 라의 자동판매기 디자인은 물론, 일본 고향마을의 시내버 스 외관까지 디자인했다)을 진행하고 있다.

쿠사마가 세계적인 작가로 떠오르게 된 것은 젊은 시절 뉴 욕에서 펼쳤던 도발적이면서도 혁신적인 작업 때문이다. 1957년 뉴욕으로 건너가 1972년까지 머물렀던 쿠사마 는 대형회화와 함께 해프닝, 환경작업, 누드 퍼포먼스를 펼쳤다. 땡땡이 무늬에 빠져 있던 그녀는 도심 한 복판에 서 나체의 여성모델에게 물감을 뿌리며 땡땡이 퍼포먼스 를 했고, 땡땡이 옷을 입고 땡땡이를 그려 넣은 말과 포즈 를 취하기도 했다. 쿠사마는 1966년 33회 베니스비엔날 레에 초대받지 않았지만 당당히 외부에서 전시를 했고 그 다음 해 정식으로 초대를 받았다. 약 30년 후 1933년에 는 베니스비엔날레 일본관이 건립되자 일본관을 처음으로 장식했다. 그녀의 작품세계는 이처럼 독특한 스토리로 흥 미를 끌 뿐만 아니라 현대미술사에서도 대단히 중요한 위 치를 차지하고 있다. 미술 뿐만 아니라 문학, 영화, 패션 등 여러 장르를 넘나들 며 일본대표 여전사로 이름을 날렸던 쿠사마는 도널드 저 드(Donald Judd), 프랭크 스텔라(Frank Stella), 조지아 오키프(Georgia O’Keeffe) 등 기라성 같은 작가들과 함 께 성(性)해방, 인권 등의 이슈를 예술 속에 담아냈다. 소 설, 잡지 심지어 패션회사까지 만든 그녀는 ‘아방가르드 여전사’로 세계적인 명성을 얻었다.

그러나 정신질환 재발로 1973년 귀국한 이후로 도쿄의 정신병원 앞에 스튜디오를 마련하고 지금까지 창작과 치 료를 병행하면서 작품활동에 몰두해왔다.

o say that the self-publishing industry is growing would be understatement. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thriving! The walls of traditional publishing are beginning to crumble as more and more aspiring authors are putting their own works up for sale on notable retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, and Kobo. Some established authors are also opting to self-publish, giving them more control over their work in addition to higher royalties. It comes as no surprise that self-publishing has become one of the latest outlets in the democratization of information. Technology has changed the landscape of books. Being a

published author no longer means having a physical copy of your book for sale in a bookstore. Ebooks have changed that, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve become a legitimate player in the book industry paradigm. When the Association of American Publishers began tracking ebook sales in 2002, they accounted for 0.05% of all trade publishing revenues. In 2008, ebooks accounted for 1% of revenues. Today, they make up over 20% of publishing revenues. And within the realm of ebooks, the percentage of self-published ebooks continues to grow. a computer and internet connection. Almost a year ago I ventured through that door and haven’t looked back. Last November, I self-published a book about my teaching experience in South Korea. Since I’ve taught English in several different countries, this is the first book in a series of soonto-be published teacher travelogues. From the onset, I never really considered traditional publishing. Truth be told, I did query about five different literary agents, but only because it’s what I thought I should do. I got rejected by three of them and never heard from the other two. That’s as far as I traveled on the road of traditional publishing. The more I began to research self-publishing, the clearer it became that this method best suited my needs. I could publish my work immediately. I’d also have complete control over the entire process from editing, to cover design, to marketing, to pricing. Granted, given the task at hand is one reason why many people are willing to forgo direct control. But I’m not in this to become rich and famous. I just want to share my experiences. Therefore, I set out to self-publish my first book on my own. After pouring through old journals and blogs, as well as researching countless information about Korea, I wrote up a manuscript. I revised it, found a ton of mistakes, and then proceeded to revise it again, and again, and again. The more I revised the manuscript, the less embarrassed I felt about sharing it with others. Finally, I completed a draft ready for critical feedback. Putting yourself out there for others to criticize your work is a big step. But my work needed a fresh set of eyes. Thus, I began pestering friends and family to read my manuscript. Surprisingly, it wasn’t as easy as I thought. But in the end, I found seven different people to help me weed out typos, awkward sentences, and unnecessary information. The more people gave feedback, the more confident I felt about publishing the book. Editing is an extremely important part of the self-publishing process, especially when you have no budget. My advice is to beg and plead to have others look at your work. After a couple months’ worth of editing, I now had a finished project…well, almost. The next step was to format my manuscript from Microsoft Word to the appropriate file format for large retailers such as Amazon. Fortunately, there are many sites on the inter-

net explaining how to format an ebook. Unfortunately, not all retailers accept the same format. Therefore, the process became rather tedious and time consuming. In hindsight, I should have been reading about formatting as I was writing the manuscript, but as always, hindsight is 20/20. After formatting the document, I used a free program called Calibre to convert it to the appropriate file formats. In order to use Amazon’s platform, the document must be converted into a mobi file, while other retailers use the epub file format. Don’t expect to get things right the first time. After converting the document and uploading it to the retailer’s site, I could then preview the content. It took about a dozen times before I worked out most of the kinks, and I was satisfied with the format. Since formatting can be time consuming, many people choose to outsource this process to 3rd party ebook distributors. Businesses such as Draft2Digital and Smashwords allow users to create a free account and upload their MS Word document. They then format and publish your ebook to the major retailers, which saves people time and allows them to manage their ebooks from one sales page for all retailers. Authors still maintain the copyright to their work, and these businesses make money only when your book sells. Typically, they retain about 15% of your proceeds. Because I didn’t opt for such assistance, I had to format my manuscript into three different file formats (mobi, epub, and pdf). It was a bit arduous, so in the future I might publish to Amazon on my own (most of my sales come from Amazon) and use Draft2Digital to publish my books with other retailers. But once formatting was complete, all that was missing was a cover. If prospective self-publishers are going to bite the financial bullet on anything, it should probably be the cover. It’s the first thing people see when browsing through books on the internet. And yes, people will judge it. However, I was hell bent on completing this process myself even if I knew nothing about photo manipulation. To get started, I downloaded a free program called GIMP and spent hours learning how to crop images, organize layers, adjust image opacity, and create effects. Kindle Boards forum to get feedback. I got raked over the coals in the beginning, but my designs slowly got better. Finally, after weeks of turmoil, I designed a cover that I liked. After adjusting the image to the correct dimensions, I then uploaded the JPEG file to each retailers publishing platform. If you’re not keen on taking the time to create your own cover, there are hundreds of independent graphic design artists who can help. Prices may range anywhere from $50 to over $1,000 depending on the artist and design. For my next book, I hired someone to create the cover and paid $85 for both an ebook and paperback cover. In order to publish my ebook, I had to create an account with the different retailers. For example, Amazon’s platform is called Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). From your account, you can upload the converted file containing the content of your book as well as the cover. Then authors need to fill out additional information such as the title, book description, and keywords for your book. Afterwards, all that’s left is setting the price. Most retailers pay authors each month either by direct deposit or sending a check. Once I had the necessary information filled out and my files were uploaded, I was ready to hit the publish button. Within 12 hours, my book was online and available to purchase.

Once your ebook is published, your job is far from over. Marketing is another huge undertaking, and one that seemingly never ends. Most authors use a myriad of social media outlets to spread the word. Blogging, Facebook, and Twitter are popular tools to promote a self-published book. But from what I’ve read, first time authors should allocate most of their time writing their next book. After publishing more books, then spend a bit more time marketing your work. I continue to spend a fair bit of time writing. However, I try to remain active on social media as I attempt to organically build a following. Over the next 6months I saw creatures I never imagined; 6meter mantas coming within a foot of me, tiny nudibranches with psychedelic color patterns, ornate ghost pipefish too fragile to look real, loggerhead turtles bigger than a table, baby frogfish smaller than my pinky, and sharks by the dozens. It took me another year teaching in Korea to save up the funds to afford a full kit and then the instructor courses. I was fortunate to land a fantastic dive instructor job in Moalboal, Cebu; Philippines at a beautiful beach resort called Club Serena that I still call home. 다. 23미터의 다시 정비된 phenisi (인도네시아의 정통 나무 보트) 는 다른 보트들과 달랐다. 최대 12명의 승객 을 수용하는 이 보트는 넓은 오픈된 공간을 자랑하고, 최 대한 자연과 가깝도록 만들어졌다. 식사 공간은 편히 대 화를 할 수 있도록 설계되었다. 라운지 의자와 흔들 의자 가 있는 넓은 갑판 테라스는 일몰을 바라보며 음료를 마 시고 춤을 추는 데 적합하다. 무엇보다, 뒷부분에 위치한 공기가 오픈 된 숙박공간, 270도의 바다 뷰와 시원한 바 람이 제격이다. 이 배는 매트가 없고 게스트들은 두꺼운 스프링 매트리스에서 잠을 청할 수 있다. 욕실이 딸려 있 는 캐빈조차 배터리로 구동되는 증발쿨러와 선풍기가 밤 에 공기를 통하게 한다. 딱히 엄청난 것들은 아니지만 배 낭여행 사파리와는 거리가 멀다. 매일 밤 9시에 우리는 시끄러운 발전기를 끄고 밤하늘 별을 바라본다. 찬란한 빛이 우리를 비추고 우리 위에는 은하수가 펼쳐져 있다.

We do anywhere from 3-6day trips, which is just long enough to get in and see most of what Komodo has to offer, which is quite a lot. Sea mounds, pinnacles, slopes, walls, canyons, drift, muck, superdrift; I get to choose the course of our little ship. It took a few years, not without trial, error, and even a few tears, but I found a boat that fits.

first it wasn’t easy to find the right job. Good shops usually already have fulltime instructors. Really good shops never lose instructors. I dabbled a bit in day diving shops, mostly teaching, and guiding on live-aboard boats, going out for days or weeks at a time doing up to 4dives a day every day. Nothing seemed to fit. Thankfully I met the right people along my travels. And now I’ve found what I think is the perfect compromise with the best bosses, the best boat, and the greatest overall way to experience diving in Komodo National Park. The Batu Bolong live-aboard safari boat. 하지만 무언가가 필자를 인도네시아로 다시 끌어당겼다. 그래서 짐을 싸고, 비행기에 몇 번 올라탄 후 이 모든 것을 시작하게 한 곳으로 향했다. 처음엔 맞는 직업을 찾기란 매우 어려웠다. 좋은 가게들에는 모두 풀타임 강사가 이 미 있었고, 강사들은 이러한 곳을 거의 떠나지 않았다. 나 는 데이 다이빙 가게에서 거의 대부분 시간을 교육하며 보 냈고, 리브어보드 보트를 가이드하며 하루에 네 번 정도 다이빙을 하며 살았다. 모든 것이 맞지 않았다. 하지만 고 맙게도, 여건이 맞는 사람들을 여정 가운데 만났다. 그리 고 필자는 코모도 국립 공원에서 최고의 사장님, 최고의 보트, 그리고 최고의 경험을 할 수 있는 완벽한 타협을 할 수 있었다. 그건 바로 바투 볼롱 리브어보드 사파리 보트.

I met Jon and Pedro while freelancing on a small safari boat, I was the guide, they were my divers. We stayed in touch for more than a year and when they approached me to run their new boat, the Batu Bolong I didn’t hesitate. A 23meter refurbished phenisi (traditional wooden Indonesian boat), this boat was something different. Sleeping up to 12 guests, the boat is dominated by large open spaces, keeping it as close to nature as possible. The dining area is designed for conversation. A huge sundeck with loungers and rocking chairs is perfect for sunset drinks and dancing. The best part, an open air shared sleeping area in the back, 270degrees of seaview and a cool breeze. No deck mats on this boat, guests sleep comfortably on thick spring mattresses. Even the ensuite cabins have battery charged evaporative coolers and fans to aerate during the night. Nothing too fancy, but still miles from the backpacker safaris. One very popular boat dive is GabGab II where you are likely to encounter the Atlantis submarine as it takes tourists on an underwater adventure. The site also is home to a giant moray eel which is friendly towards divers and a large school of bannerfish which will add to the excitement. Stop and take a look around. You may notice an octopus changing color to adapt to its surroundings or a sea anemone hosting a family of clown fish. Other popular sites for advanced divers are the Blue Hole and Crevice. These sites offer great visibility with sea fans and pelagic fish swimming by. You may even encounter sea turtles if you are lucky.

The American Tanker is a popular wreck dive in Apra Harbor. It sits upright so it’s easy to navigate. There are sponges and corals growing on the wreck which attract many colorful banner and butterfly fish. The Tokai Maru is a Japanese freighter which was torpedoed during WWII. That wreck is touching the Cormoran, a WWI wreck. Advanced divers can feel like a part of history by touching both wrecks at the same time. Be sure to stay on -continued on p30-

You have a lot more than diving to look forward to if you visit Guam. There are beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails. You can golf, parasail, jet ski, deep sea fish or just relax on the beach. The War in the Pacific park is a great place to stop and learn about the important role that Guam played during WWII. The people of Guam are warm and friendly. Don’t be surprised if you are invited to a fiesta in a local village while touring the island. Possibly because it is ninety percent Buddhist, Thailand is slow paced and teaching there is stress-free as the focus lies mainly on having fun.

The schooling system is similar to the EPIK schools; so you’re looking at a normal 8 to 5 day, teaching about 20 hours a week. Employment can be either at an international school or at a public school. International school jobs are scarce and if you do manage to land one, they pay really well. Public schools hire their teachers through agencies and there are various ones that you can apply with.

Thailand is a country better known for ladyboys, pingpong shows and tropical beaches than for its culture. However, teaching there reveals a rich world which would otherwise remain unseen.

My year in Thailand can best be described by the word random. Here are only a few of my experiences. •During the Loi Krathong festival the school dressed us up in traditional Thai clothes, stuck us in a street parade and showed us how to do Thai dancing. •Eating anything from ant larvae soup to crocodile. •Partying at a Thai night club. This is exciting for a variety of reasons but my favorite little quirk is that men receive free neck and back massages at the urinals. •During a school trip to a snake park, a python was draped around my shoulders. Now, let’s talk money. The basic salary is about half of what we get paid here in Korea and your accommodation is not included. However, the cost of living is extremely low and I managed to live comfortably off half of my income. It’s also easy to make some extra cash on the side as there is always someone that wants tutoring. 이제 월급에 대해서 이야기해보자. 기본급은 이 곳 한국에서 받던 돈의 절반 정도 밖에 되지 않으 며 집도 제공되지 않는다. 하지만 생활비는 정말 얼마 들지 않고, 월급으로도 충분히 편하게 살 수 있었다. 그리고 과외 자리도 많이 있기 때문에 여 분의 돈도 더 벌 수 있다.

The school year extends from May to March and is divided into two semesters. Agencies hire in the months leading up to the start of each semester. 1st semester = May to October. 2nd semester = November to March. This also leaves you with three months of holiday per year. If you’re employed by an international school these will be paid vacations; if not, they’re unpaid. Don’t let this be a deal breaker. You will be able to save enough money during the semester to go on vacation and survive your first month back. There are also plenty of summer camps if you do want to work. Plus most agencies pay “contract completion” and “contract resigning” bonuses. 학사 일정은 5월부터 3월까지 이며 이학기제이다. 보통 에이전시에서 각 학기가 시작되기 몇 달 전에 채용한다. 첫 번째 학기는 5월부터 9월까지 두 번째 학기는 11월부 터 그 다음 3월까지이다. 1년에 석 달 정도의 휴일이 학 기 중에 포함되어 있다. 만약 국제 학교에서 일하게 되면 이 휴일은 유급 휴가가 될 것이고 국제학교가 직장이 아 니라면 무급 휴가가 될 것이다. 하지만 이 것 때문에 협상 을 깨지는 마라. 학기 동안 휴가를 갈 수 있고, 태국에서 의 첫 번째 달을 살아남을 수 있는 돈을 모을 수 있다. 일 을 하고 싶다면 여름 동안 진행되는 영어캠프도 많다. 게 다가 대부분의 에이전시에서는 계약 완료 보너스와 재계 약 보너스를 지급한다.

Your flights to Thailand are not typically covered by the employment agencies, but most have an all-expenses-paid orientation week at a nice hotel. Teaching is a well respected profession in Thailand and therefore you need to look the part. Men need to dress smart and women are expected to cover their shoulders and wear skirts that end above the knee. The sizes of the public school classes are between 30 and 40 pupils. This is not as overwhelming as you might think as you’ll have a Thai co-teacher to assist you. I have had no experience with teaching teenagers, but I’ve been told that having a ladyboy in your class is quite entertaining. The little ones are absolutely adorable and once they warm up to you, you’ll be given anything from stuffed toys to shoulder massages. 교사는 태국에서 존경 받는 직업이며, 따라서 그 에 맞는 몸가짐이 필요하다. 남자는 단정한 복장 을 갖춰야 하고, 여자는 어깨를 드러내거나 무릎 위로 올라가는 치마를 입으면 안 된다. 공립학교 학급의 규모는 30~40명 정도이다. 태국인 교사가 보조를 해 주기 때문에 생각하는 것만큼 애를 먹지 않을 것이다. 필자는 10대 청소년들을 가르쳐 본 경험은 없지만, 학급 학생 중에 레이디보이가 있 는 경우는 꽤나 재미있다고 들었다. 어린 아이들 은 당연히 사랑스럽고, 한 번 가까워지면 인형에 서부터 마사지까지 여러 선물을 받게 될 것이다.

I would recommend teaching in Thailand to open-minded adventure seekers who are longing for a more cultural experience. The land of smiles will welcome you with open arms and leave you with a once-in- a-lifetime experience.

he second travel destination to Thailand soon became a reality as we boarded the plane to Hat Yai at noon. We arrived at the Hat Yai Airport and arranged a package deal from the airport to the city where we’d be waiting for a couple of hours before being transported by an overnight bus to Surat Thani, then Donsak Pier to eventually start our island hoping trip. 우리는 정오에 Hat Yai로 향하는 비행기를 타면서 비로 소 2차 목적지인 태국으로 가는 것을 실감했다. 우리는 Hat Yai 공항에 도착한 후 Surat Thani로 가기전 머무 를 도시로 가는 패키지를 마련했다. 우리는 그 도시에서 Surat Thani로 가는 야간 버스를 타기 위해 어느정도 기다린 후, Donsak Pier에서 본격적인 섬 여행을 시작하기로 했다.

We decided not to let the day go to waste and ventured out to see the little there is to see in Hat Yai. Hat Yai is located on the Southern Gulf Coast of Thailand and popular amongst Malaysian and Singaporean tourists but you may go without seeing a single western tourist in the area. A lesson learned was that prices are quite high in this area and since this was our first stop in Thailand, we weren’t aware of this at the time. It was not

worth a stop over and definitely not worth the visit. It’s best avoided if you are looking to get off the beaten path. 우리는 하루를 낭비하지 않기 위해 Hat Yai를 탐방하기 로 했다. 태국 남쪽 연안지역에 위치한 Hat Yai는 말레 이시아와 싱가포르 관광객 사이에서 인기있는 명소지만, 서양 관광객 사이에서는 알려지지 않은 곳이다. 이 곳에 서 배운 점은 이 곳의 물가가 꽤 비싸다는 것이었지만, 당 시에는 이 곳이 태국에서의 첫번째 관광지였기 때문에 그 사실을 인지하지 못했다. 그다지 머무를 장소가 못되었고 절대 방문할 만한 가치가 없었다. 특별한 여행을 원한다 면 추천하지 않는다.

After an entire day in Hat Yai, we were transported by our service company to catch the late night bus, we arrived at the Donsak Pier at 4:30 am, just in time for the first ferry to Ko Samui, we hopped on the ferry and a few minutes later were well on our way to the Island. The journey was very scenic; watching the sunrise in the middle of the sea is a breath taking experience. The boats are not fancy nor are they uncomfortable. Hat Yai에서의 하루가 끝나고 우리는 서비스 회사의 도 움을 받아 야간 버스를 타기 위해 이동했다.우리는 새벽 4시 반 Ko Samui행 첫 유람선 시간에 딱 맞춰 Donsak Pier에 도착했다. 우리는 유람선에 올라탄 다음 몇 분후 섬으로 향하고 있었다. 우리의 여정은 매우 근사했다. 일 출을 바다 한가운데서 바라보는 것은 숨이 멎을 정도로 아름다운 경험이 되었다. 배들은 화려하지도 않았지만 불 편하지도 않았다. 우리는 아침 일찍 부두에 도착하여 택 시를 잡으러 떠났다. 그 곳에서 한 미니밴이 젊은 커플과 함께 우리를 도착지까지 안내하기로 제의하였는데, 덕분 에 1인당 1600BHT이 아닌 800BHT라는 값싼 가격으 로 이동할 수 있었다.

After driving around looking for our guesthouse, we were eventually dropped off at the restaurant with a same name, but far from where anyone should be sleeping. An hour of waiting and a manager came down the stairs and offered to assist us, we told him the story and he explained that we would have to wait for the guests in occupancy to check out. by taking a stroll in town, we picked up one of the ‘Full Moon Packages’ for 1200 BHT each, did a bit of neon colored beach wear shopping then back to the restaurant. Later, we arrived at our guesthouse and waited for a few more minutes for our rooms to be prepared. We managed to finish getting ready just in time for the pick up to Ko Phangan. We made a few friends along the way who by default became our party mates for the evening. The full moon was already filling up as expected, when we arrived at the dock, we bought our 100 BHT tickets, neon color paint, and samsong buckets as per full moon party tradition. Slowly partiers started to migrate to the main attraction-Haad Rin Beach. At first glance, all I saw was a sea of literally thousands of people. I couldn’t even see a beach. Haad Rin is famed for its monthly Full Moon parties, which attract thousands of revelers from across the world. We had heard a lot of bad reviews about the infamous full moon parties in Haad Rin, drugs consumed by many partygoers, drug laws are apparently strict and police enforcement is stepped up during the parties but I did not witness any protection whilst I was there, but maybe that’s because police on patrol are undercover and even the drug dealers themselves

Break-ins at hotel bungalows while partygoers are away from their rooms sometimes occur as well. 게스트하우스를 찾기 위해 돌아다닌 후 우리는 같 은 이름의 레스토랑에 도착했지만, 숙박시설과는 거리가 먼 곳이었다. 1시간 정도 기다린 후 매니저 가 계단에서 내려와 우리를 도와주기로 제안했다. 우리의 사정을 이야기 하자 그는 다른 게스트들이 체크아웃을 할 때까지 기다려야 한다고 대답했다. 우리는 기다릴 동안 마을을 구경하기로 했다. 1인당 1200BHT인 “풀 문 패키지”를 구입하고, 네온 색 깔의 수영복을 쇼핑한 후 레스토랑으로 돌아왔다. 좀있다가 우리는 게스트하우스에 도착하여 방이 정 리될 때까지 몇 분 정도 기다렸다. Ko Phangan을 갈 시간에 겨우 맞춰 준비를 끝내고, 가는 길에 그 날 저녁 우리의 파티 메이트가 될 새로운 사람들을 만나게 되었다. 우리가 부두에 도착할 무렵 보름달 은 이미 차오르고 있었고, 우리는 보름달 파티 전통 을 따라 100 BHT짜리 티켓, 네온 색 페인트, 그리 고 Samsong 양동이를 구매했다. 천천히 파티객 들은 메인 장소인 Haad Rin 해변으로 모여들었다. 처음에 언뜻 보기에는 천 여명의 사람들 무리만 이 보일 뿐, 해변가는 보이지도 않았다. The next couple of days in Ko Samui we spent exploring the island. Ko Samui’s repertoire of things to do and see is varied and interesting. It may not be the world’s best island but it is an oasis of natural beauty with its white sandy beaches, dazzling coral, luscious lagoons, picturesque waterfalls and crystal clear water. Unfortunately, it is quite visible that this island is slowly developing just like Phuket and is starting to take its toll, the beaches in both Chaweng and Lamai are overcrowded during the high season. 그 후 며칠 간 우리는 Ko Samui 섬을 탐방하였다. On the second to last day in Samui, we enjoyed the beaches; both Lamai and Chaweng are opulent and relatively impressive. We lay on the beach with cold cocktails and ogled at the hunks because there isn’t much to see. Lamai beach does have a certain pair of Rocks that

Full moon parties are also famous for a number of assaults and robberies at the party and in bars in the surrounding area and the most prominent event that I did not witness but occurred at the same party. On New year’s Eve 2012, where British tourist Stephen Ashton was killed by a stray bullet. A great summary of all full moon parties is fire skipping ropes, music of all genres, alcohol buckets and lots of fun. have developed a rather amusing shape, namely Hin Ta and Hin Yai (grand father and grandmother rocks) and there is a bar called rock bar on the shore, which plays great music and is a beautiful place for sundowners. Samui에서의 떠나기 전날에는 해변가에서 즐겼다. Lamai와 Chaweng은 둘 다 부유하고 상대적으로 인상 적이다. 우리는 해변에서 차가운 칵테일을 갖고 누워서 멋 진 남자들에게 눈길을 주었는데, 그것은 딱히 볼 게 없었 기 때문이다. Lamai 해변은 Hin Ta와 Hin Yai (할아버지 와 할머니 바위) 라는 독특한 모양의 바위 가 있고, 해안가 에 Rock Bar라고 불리우는 바가 있다. 이 곳에서는 좋은 음악과 해질녘 술을 마시기에 아름다운 장소를 제공한다.

Other sights on the island include Wat Phra Yai, (Big Budha) which is still the island’s main tourist attraction, Na Muang Waterfalls, a majestic set of two cascades considered to be the most scenic in Ko Samui, Wat Plai Laem a striking white 18-arm image of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion and arounf the corner is the laughing Buddha and the last stop was the Samui Aquarium and tiger show where you get up close to an array of marine life, colourful birds and exotic wildlife all-in-one stop. -continued on p42-

The party goes on until the next morning and the party debris is very visible when the sun comes up, this is usually the time where friends start searching for each other, brushing off drunks trying to get lucky and heading back to the ferry if you came from the other islands. We headed for the ferry where everyone looked like stacked fish on a boat on the way back. We reached the dock an hour later and you’d hope you still have the ticket which would put you in some mode of transportation and would take you back to your hotel. 다음날 아침까지 파티는 지속되고, 해가 뜰 무렵 파티의 흔적들을 또렷하게 볼 수 있다. 이 시간쯤 되면 친구들은 서로를 찾기 시작하고, 술에 취한 흔적들을 털어내고, 만 약 다른 섬에서 왔다면 유람선으로 돌아가기 시작한다. 돌아가는 배 안에서는 모두가 잔뜩 쌓인 생선처럼 보였 다. 우리는 한 시간 후 부두에 도착했다. 호텔까지 가는 교통수단에서 사용 가능한 티켓을 그 때까지 가지고 있 기를 바랄뿐이다

After a beautiful last day in Samui, we booked a tour package with a tour agent to head to Bangkok in the morning. This was a mistake as we woke up on time and waited for our taxi to pick us up for the 1:00 pm ferry, after 45 minutes and seeing different companies pick up other tourists, we started to worry. We made a few phone calls to the company, who claimed the bus had arrived but, we had not been there. After a few arguments, a Thai woman from the agency arrived and told us we had to get ourselves to the dock, with only 30 minutes before our ferry, there wasn’t enough time to argue, so we got on a taxi and arrived 5 minutes before the ferry was to depart and we were well on our way to the big, bad Bangkok.

Also, there is a coffee museum, where you can see the history and trends of coffee in various countries. Hyangiwon will offer you a beautiful smell of thyme, cassia trees, trifoliate orange trees and so on, next to a small pond. <For Rest 12> is a good place for having a group activity such as a workshop or a conference. 난 후 오후 1시 유람선을 타기 위해 택시를 기다렸는데, 45분이나 지난 후 다른 회사들이 관광객들을 픽업하는 것을 본 후 걱정이 되기 시작했다. 우리는 회사에게 여 러통의 전화를 했는데, 그 쪽에서는 버스가 이미 도착했 지만 우리가 그 곳에 없었다고 얘기했다. 약간의 말다툼 후에, 에이전시의 한 태국 여인이 우리에게 와서 유람선 이 떠나기 전 30분밖에 안남은 상황에 부두에 가야한다 고 알려주었다. 더 이상 실랑이 할 시간이 없었기에, 바로 택시에 탄후 유람선이 떠나기 5분 전에 도착하였다. 우리 는 방콕으로 향했다.

Finally! It’s waterpark time! Especially in this hot and sweaty summer, I know that you want to throw yourself into Spa Valley’s cold wave pool. Spa Valley is Daegu’s first waterpark which opened in 2003. And after 10 years, it’s been turned into the only “Healing Resort” in Korea, due to persistent efforts to develop it as both a waterpark and a recreational forest. The month of May saw a fantastic shift towards local music in the form of Daegu’s second annual Battle of the Bands. Urban provided the perfect venue for this sacred ceremony of newcomers, unknowns, and future legends of Rock. Over the course of five consecutive Saturdays, the city’s night life was handed a healthy dose of headbanging, a sampling of absolutely searing guitar solos, and an earful of general noise and ruckus, as Korea’s expat and National working class put in a solid effort to keep the party from shutting down. Yes, indeed, there is more to Korea’s music scene than K-Pop.

More than just the skill of the individual groups, the mere amount of genres represented was impressive in it’s own right, ranging from the smooth Gypsy Jazz of The Swinging Doors, to the nightmarish (yet oh so danceable) surrealistic nature of Junk’s Garage Electronica, to the straight-up, unfiltered headbanging goodness of Metal acts like Pohang’s Erlang Kovata. The Expat community was certainly treating the audience to the best they had to offer.

The Korean community had, in this reporter’s humble opinion, some of the most surprising and impressive sets that this year’s Battle had to offer. Most of these names are, undoubtedly, not well known in the English-speaking community, but there are a lot of reasons why they should be. Standout acts include local boys肉肉肉, with their body thrashing rhythms and gut busting solos, combined with incredible stage presence. Not to mention the no-nonsense Garage Rock of Plastic Kids, who opened up their set with a cover of “7 Nation Army” that would have made Jack White himself tear up. Neuron demanded the audience’s attention with their fun, hip, yet undeniably body-shakin’ dance rock, and were also the only Korean band to make it to the final round. Indeed, this reporter has high hopes of seeing more interaction between the Expat and Korean Musicians. Congratulations to Denizen, this year’s winners, thanks to Philian Jung and the staff of Urban for being such fantastic hosts, and thanks to all of you who came out for listening, voting, drinking, and dancing. KAMP isn’t just about having fun with the program mentees. It’s also about building interpersonal skills for these kids (generally 3rd year middle schoolers and 1st-2nd year high schoolers), who are encouraged to learn how to best express themselves.

All mentors are non-Koreans, which means that cross-cultural connections are being made through the program. Mentors undergo professional development training with KAMP and participate in mentor meetings twice a month. Mentors, once being accepted, commit themselves for 1 year to the program.

“Our short term goal is to foster mutually beneficial relationships between the first group of mentors and mentees while developing a solid foundation for the growth of our organization,” Cessant says. When asked about the long term goals of KAMP, he went on to say: “We would like to establish a solid well-known mentorship program within the community and expand beyond Daegu. We hope to gain support and secure funding for our initiatives and programs.

hether it’s walking animal shelter dogs in the park on a Sunday afternoon or going ice-skating with orphans in the winter, Daegu is a city that has always been full of wonderful volunteer opportunities for non-Koreans. Beginning this fall, a new organization has been created to help connect foreigners with at-risk Korean teenagers. KAMP (Korean Adolescent Mentoring Program) was first realized in September of last year by four Fulbright English Teaching Assistants in Daegu who had had prior mentoring experience and felt a need to apply that to the youths of Korea.

While unofficial at first, the group began to solidify itself in April of this year into the KAMP organization.

The mission is to provide mentoring and cultural exchange to at-risk Korean youth in the hopes of having them realize their full potential. Jethro Cessant, Marketing Director of KAMP, says: “KAMP mentees come from high schools and middle schools that participate with The Fulbright Program. We provide homeroom teachers with a letter explaining our program and ask them to recommend low-income students, students who have trouble adjusting to social or academic life in school, or students with family problems such as divorce or abuse.”

Participating mentors agree to meet and/or contact their mentees at least once a week. The activities range from going to baseball games to camping trips, but

Well, this summer, a new company doing just that with bingsu, aka Korean shave ice! Typical Korean bingsu starts with shaving ice, adding milk, and then putting sweet red beans and usually a fruit or ice cream (or both) on top. Flavors are typically green tea or yogurt, or just plain patbingsu. But, what about those who want to experience the same concept but with more variety of flavors?

That’s where Stompy Ruffers comes in. Stompy Ruffers bingsu is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. The company, located in Buy the Book Cafe downtown, specializes in Korean-American fusion bingsu.

When the season closes in September, the company will continue to push its brand and mission of supporting cross-cultural connections and the “fusing together” of Korean and western culture in our world today. Already, Stompy Ruffers is a community supporter of KampKorea, a new adolescent mentoring program here in Daegu. Stompy Ruffers donates a portion of its sales every Friday night to the organization. Also, for every t-shirt sold on Fridays, they match it with a t-shirt donation to one of the program’s children.

The idea came from ex-pats who thought some westerners might skip out on eating bingsu because westerners don’t often eat sweet red bean. They wanted to fuse western flavors with the concept of Korean shave ice and draw more foreigners into eating this cool, summertime dessert.

“I love going to rehearsal because we have so much fun creating as a cast,” says Eddie Pailet, the lead male. “So if we’re already having a blast, I know the audience will too.” The show will be performed at the YeJeon Art Center, a few blocks down from the Prince Hotel. The dates will be Saturday, August 24th-Sunday, August 25th at 5pm and 8pm. As well, for the first time in DTT history, Korean subtitles will be projected along the wall. he Princess Bride has been called the greatest story ever told. It has fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, True Love, and miracles.

comedic interpretations of the beloved characters: the mysterious man in black; the genius Sicilian; the Spanish sword master; the gentle giant; the menacing six-fingered man, etc.

In its history, The Princess Bride has gone through many revisions. Originally written by S. Morgenstern, it was then revised by William Goldman. Much later, Hollywood director Rob Reiner made a film adaptation that has captivated both the young and old for years. Now, the Daegu Theatre Troupe is taking the honor of bringing The Princess Bride to the stage.

“This is not a serious retelling of the movie,” says the director. “We are having fun with it. We are performing it as fans. It has everything you love from the film. Every memorable line is said. Every memorable fight is fought. The audience even plays a large part.”

In Jarrod Clegg’s directorial debut, The Princess Bride tells the story of the beautiful Princess Buttercup. She has lost her love to the Dread Pirate Roberts and is being forced to marry the evil Prince Humperdinck. Buttercup is then kidnapped by a gang of thieves. This takes her on an unexpected journey that brings her face to face with the Dread Pirate himself. Sinister plots are revealed. Battles ensue. The bonds of love and friendship are cemented. Who will win? Who will perish? The play features a star studded cast of both Daegu Theatre Troupe veterans and newcomers. Each actor, being fans of the original movie, brings their own

The idea to perform The Princess Bride started years ago. In high school, Jarrod’s Public Speaking class performed their version of the film in front of the school. The desire to do it again remained in the back of his head every since. Then, the opportunity came. A previously scheduled DTT play was postponed. A quick replacement was needed. It was then that The Princess Bride began to take flight. A script was written. Actors were cast. The crew was established. The props are all hand-made; from swords to boats. The wardrobe has also proven itself to be a daunting task. Each period-piece is being hand-stitched by the talented Elaine Fenwick and Kita Mendolia.

to the different activities that we have done.” Some participants were overly zealous in their academic pursuit: “At first, the kids [competed] to see who [could] fill out the most pages in the journal,” said Mr. Mutter, who used journal-keeping to preserve “a snap shot” of his students’ self-identification and self-knowledge at this point in their life. “I am really shooting for quality, not quantity, but this motivation will spur them on to write more … [which] means more practice and better mechanics,” he added.

Miss. Dugas hoped to incorporate a field trip to her next program, while both Mr. Jolly and Mr. Mutter expressed their desire to include video-related aspects to their future programs. In a more pragmatic perspective, Mrs. Jolly elaborated on her plan for improvement: “Next year, I would meet with students before the summer school session started … [to] know more about their likes, dislikes, interests, etc.”

What students learned, however, went beyond mere skills. Broaching the psychological growth he could observe in his students, Mr. Jolly commented, “… All of the students [became] more confident in their writing abilities as the weeks progressed.” Unconventional, innovative, and engaging are words that aptly describe certain activities. For instance, Mr. and Mrs. Cross made use of M&M chocolates to visualize exponential models, while Mrs. Mallary oversaw the creation of medieval castles out of Styrofoam and an interactive medieval battle among students.

Following last year’s success, this year’s summer school was able to reap the rewards of both students’ and teachers’ collective endeavor. Hoping to continue on with this academic experience, DIS will begin its fourth year since establishment on August 20.

Referring to varied writing activities, including the fantasy fiction story her students had to write, Mrs. Mallary noted, “By writing about each topic, the students were able to connect the reading material to their own understandings. Also, through [proof-reading] and editing, the students were able to understand and meet the writing expectations for fourth grade.”

When Daegu International School (DIS) students were dismissed for the summer break on June 6, some elementary students were ready to embrace a summer of learning at DIS. Determined to further their learning experience, these students engaged in the summer school program from June 10 to 21. The courses offered revolved around a specific theme or an academic skill, invoking extracurricular subjects to foster intra-curricular skills. Mr. and Mrs. Cross taught the basics of Algebra and Geometry to rising 6th graders, together with note-taking and problem-solving skills necessary in higher-level education, through the real-life exponential decay model of the now-extinct African Black Rhino population, among others. Mr. Jolly helped students understand the steps involved in writ-

ing via individual and group projects on creating online journals on DIS, Esiapolis, and various places around Daegu. His wife, Mrs. Jolly, devised an all-encompassing curriculum on the rain forest through which students could enhance their skills in reading, writing, science, math, and art. Similarly targeting reading and writing, Mrs. Mallary led a medieval history program based on the novel Knights and Castles. Her program entailed arts and crafts, creative writing, and other “hands-on projects.” Responding to the effort teachers had put in, students showed remarkable progress in each course. Miss. Dugas—who taught the art, mythology, and culture of Italy to instill a sense of “the value of diversity” in her students— remarked, “[T]he students seem receptive

Some of the teachers accredited fellow teachers for their program ideas. Inspired by Ms. Proceviat’s rain forest study with the rising 2nd graders last year, Mrs. Jolly orchestrated her own program. Mrs. Mallary also had a collaborator: “Mr. Mallary, my husband and an enthusiastic history teacher, helped me decide on a theme that offered lots of opportunities for learning, discovery and fun!” she said. With this year’s summer school now over, many teachers already had ideas for improving their program for next summer. “Maybe expand on the theme of threatened species and extinction,” replied Mr. Cross, briefly touching on how he had to revise his initial theme, the medieval times, to better fit the nature of his core subject, math.

he 2013 Daegu Medi Expo started last June 21st to the 24th. It introduced a new growth potential in the medical field. There are 18 institutions headed by the Daegu Medical Tourism that participated in the said Expo in order to inform foreigners about Daegu’s excellent medical technology. The “Allforskin Clinic” is run by Dr. Min Pok Kee. Dr. Min is also the Communication Director of the Daegu Medical Association who provided foreigners with free diagnosis of hair loss and skin conditions all throughout the Expo and did its best to discharge its duties and responsibilities as a one of leading Medical Tourism Institution. Dr. Min who was appointed to the steering committee in the Expo had an exclusive interview as a representative of the Daegu Medical Tourism and escorted Daegu mayor, Kim Bum-il who visited the Expo to encourage Allforskin clinic and other institutions. Daegu City created its first medical industry team nationwide in March 2008 and attracted High Technology Medical Complex in August 2009 in order to make an effort to make Medi-City, Daegu as a mecca of Medical Tourism. Daegu took one step closer to fulfilling the vision for a hub of global medical industry especially due to Daegu’s success in attracting High Technology Medical Complex. Daegu plans to let the world know about the “Medi-City, Daegu” and is expected to grow in the Korean Medical Tourism in the near future.
