Editor Notes Hi Daegu, This is our 4-year anniversary issue! Thanks so much for supporting the Daegu Compass for all these years. Time seems to fly by; it feels like just yesterday when we published our first issue. But who knew, after four years we would still going strong! Calling all live rock music lovers! Are you tired of all the K-Pop and same old, same old American music? An up & coming rock venue has come to Daegu this past December! Elkim Yoon, a 23 year-old Filipino-Korean who is fluent in English and Korean, initially opened up Retro City (레트로시티) to give the Korean youngsters (mostly university students) a place to truly experience what live music feels and sounds like. Retro City has started to blossom with the presence of the Korean youth, but Elkim’s seeking to spreading his motto of “Freedom” to the foreigner population as well. 8

K-Pop 과 늘 똑같은 미국 음악이 지겨운가? 지난 12월에 어느 락 카페가 대구에 문을 열었다. 한국어와 영어에 모두 능숙한 23살의 필리핀계 한국인인 엘킴 윤씨는 한국의 젊은 세대( 대부분은 대학생)에게 라이브 음악이 어떤 느낌을 주고 어 떻게 들리는지 진정으로 경험할 수 있는 장소를 제공해 주 기 위해 처음 레트로 시티를 열었다. 레트로 시티는 한국의 젊은이들이 찾아오기 시작하면서 서서히 좋아지기 시작했 지만 엘킴씨는 외국인들에게도 그의 모토인 “자유”를 널리 퍼뜨려고 하고 잇다.

The laidback owner of this hangout spot wants people to come freely, take a break from their cellphones, and just socialize by talking to one another, without the use of technology. The huge, comfy, and relaxed basement vibe of Retro City is the perfect atmosphere to do just that. Elkim also has plenty of means to help open up the verbal dialogue; such as Wii and board games, a beer pong table, darts, and even shot roulette. 이 아지트의 느긋한 주인장은 사람들이 자유롭게 찾아오 고 스마트폰은 잠시 접어 두고 서로 대화를 나누며 과학문 명의 힘을 빌리지 않고 사람들과의 사귐을 나누길 희망한 다. 레트로 시티의 크고 편안하고 한가로운 지하만의 느낌 은 그런 것을 하기에 매우 알맞은 분위기이다. 엘킴씨는 위 나 보드 게임, 비어퐁 테이블, 다트, 샷 룰렛까지 대화를 시 작할 수 있는 다양한 놀잇거리도 가지고 있다.

What makes Retro City more intriguing is that it is actually two places-in-one. In the afternoons, it’s a bright café where people can go, have a cup of spirited coffee, play some games, and chat over a variety of genres of music. But when the sun goes down, so do the lights. Retro City turns into a bar with loud rock, heavy metal, alternative, and other various styles of ‘rock’ blasting through the sound system. When I walked in, a Lamb of God concert live at the Electric Factory was projected onto the screen, with people sitting around a plethora of various-sized tables. At eight o’clock on Saturday night, the place was packed with patrons awaiting the weekly live music; which were three Korean university cover bands (Pale Blue, Vulcans, and Holy Broz)! By ten o’clock, the crowd was lively and up and ‘dancing’ to the pulsating music coming from the young musicians on stage. 레트로 시티를 더욱 흥미롭게 만드는 것은 두 장소가 한 곳 에 모여 있다는 것이다. 오후에는 사람들이 와서 레트로 시 티의 정신이 깃든 커피를 마시거나 게임을 하거나 다양한 장르의 음악을 들으며 수다를 떨 수 있는 카페가 된다. 하 지만 해가 저물고 빛마저 사라지면, 레트로 시티는 사운드 시스템을 날려버릴 듯한 강렬한 락과 헤비메탈, 얼터너티 브, 다양한 장르의 락이 가득한 바로 변한다. 필자가 레트 로 시티로 들어섰을 때, 과다한 다양한 크기의 테이블에 사 람들이 앉아 있었고, 일렉트릭 팩토리에서 열렸던 Lamb of God의 콘서트 실황이 스크린에 펼쳐져 있었다. 토요일 밤 8시가 되자 매주 열리는 라이브 공연을 기다리는 관객 들로 가득 찼는데 한국 대학생 커버 밴드 세 팀(Pale Blue, Vulcans, Holy Broz)의 공연이 있었다. 10시가 되자, 관 중들은 적극적으로 일어나 무대 위의 젊은 뮤지션들이 만 들어내는 고동치는 음악에 맞춰 춤을 췄다. -continued on p10-

At Retro City, house specialized food and drinks are available to satiate your thirst and hunger cravings. Elkim presents a very special menu, with some curiously distinctive items. This month he has a drink called 50 Shades of Cherry. Plus, he has the standard cocktails (5,500-8,000 won), draft beer (mugs, pitchers, and towers), and imported bottle beers (4,500-8,000). Something ‘hot’ at Retro City is that the coffee he serves is spiked with various liquors. The food names at Retro City surely show off Elkim’s great sense of humor, with names such as I’m Hungry Fried Rice (5,500 won), Squirty Dried Squid (6,000 won), and Long and Big Sausage Combo (15,000 won – which he says is the ladies favorite!) 레트로 시티에는 목마름과 허기를 달래 줄 이 곳만의 특별 한 음식과 음료가 있다. 엘킴씨는 매우 차별화되는 아이 템과 함께 아주 특별한 메뉴를 선보였다. 이번 달에는 50 Shades of Cherry를 내놓았고, 이 외에 기본적인 칵테일 (5,500~8,000원), 생맥주(자, 피쳐, 타워), 수입 병맥주 등 이 있다. 레트로 시티만의 핫한 아이템은 엘킴씨가 내놓는 커피인데 다양한 리큐르를 첨가한 것이 특징이다. 그리고 메 뉴의 이름은 엘킴씨의 유머감각을 확실히 알 수 있게 해 준 다. 예를 들어보자면, I’m Hungry Fried Rice (5,500원), Squirty Dried Squid (6,000원), Long and Big Sausage

Retro City is not far from the streets of booze that most expats go and visit. The easiest way to find Retro City is by taking the street between CGV - Lotte Young Plaza (롯 데백화점 영플라자) and Novotel (노보텔) towards Daegu Train Station (대구역). Continue down this street, passing Standard Charters Bank. Take a left on the alley just before Daegu Bank. Keep walking about 1-2 minutes at most, until you see the big black blow up sign on your right that says, “Retro City.” 레트로 시티는 대부분의 외국인들이 가는 펍거리에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있다. 이 곳으로 가는 가장 쉬운 방법은 대구역 방 향으로 가는 CGV/롯데영플라자와 노보텔 사이의 거리를 통 과하는 것이다. 거리를 따라 걷다가 스탠다트 차티스 은행을 지나 대구은행 바로 전 골목에서 왼쪽으로 가면 된다. 1, 2분 정도 걷다 보면 오른쪽에 “Retro City”라고 적힌 커다란 검 은 간판을 발견하게 될 것이다.

We all know that finding good, authentic Southeast Asian food in the great city of Daegu can sometimes pose a challenge. I personally, have grown tired of the “fusion” style food that’s oh so popular in these parts (sidenote: why are most Korean chefs so afraid of cilantro?). That’s why I’ve been visiting Hi Thai religiously since its opening in August. 괜찮으면서도 제대로 된 동남아시아 음식을 위대한 도시 대 구에서 찾는 것이 가끔은 도전이라는 것을 우리 모두 알고 잇다. 개인적으로는 이러한 부분에서 매우 인기 있는 “퓨전” 스타일의 음식에 질렸다. (추가 메모 : 왜 한국인 주방장들 은 고수잎을 사용하는 것을 꺼려할까?) 이러한 이유로 필자 는 8월에 하이 타이가 문을 열었을 때부터 어김없이 이 곳으 로 발걸음을 옮겼다.

Hi Thai is a lovely little new hole in the wall restaurant located on the same street as the fire station (삼덕소 방서) across from the Gukchae Bosang Park (the one with the big bell). The restaurant itself is quite small but that only adds to its charm. Its interior is reminiscent of a Thai bungalow with beaded curtains being the only separation from the kitchen. Hi Thai’s laid-back owner, Daegu-native 성주형, who goes by the English name Jay, has a passion for fresh, authentic Thai cuisine. Having spent a year in Perth, Western Australia working at a popular Thai restaurant, Jay developed a keen interest in Thai cuisine. After his time in Australia, he stopped over in Thailand to further improve his Thai cooking skills. Jay explained that he immediately fell in love with Thai food because of its simple, fresh and healthy ingredients. 대구 토박이인 성주형 (영어이름은 제이)은 하이 타이의 푸 근한 주인으로 신선하고 제대로 된 타이 음식에 대한 열정을 갖고 있다. 제이씨는 호주 서부의 퍼스에서 1년 동안 인기있 는 태국 레스토랑에서 일을 하며 타이 음식에 관한 열정적인 관심을 키워나갔다. 그리고 호주에서의 시간을 뒤로 하고 태 국 음식 조리 실력을 더 발전시키기 위해 태국으로 갔다. 제 이씨는 태국 음식의 단순하고 신선하며 건강한 음식 재료 때 문에 태국 음식과 바로 사랑에 빠졌다고 설명했다. -continued on p14-

That’s exactly what I love about Hi Thai, it’s always fresh, fast and delicious. Jay gets all of his ingredients daily at the local market, including the meat, which has never been frozen and is always farm fresh. He’s generous with the cilantro, as all good Thai chefs should be. 그 것이 바로 필자가 하이 타이에 대해 매우 좋아하는 점이 다. 항상 신선하고 빨리 맛있는 음식이 나온다. 제이씨는 절 대 얼리지 않은 신선육을 비롯하여 음식 재료를 매일 시장에 서 공수한다. 좋은 태국 음식 요리사라면 당연히 그래야 하 듯, 고수잎도 충분히 사용한다.

Hi Thai offers all of your favorite traditional Thai dishes. The Pad Thai, is the restaurant favorite and with good reason. It’s authentic and has that perfect balance of sweet and sour flavors. 하이 타이는 손님이 좋아하는 모든 종류의 태국 전통 요리를 내놓는다. 패드 타이는 가장 인기가 있는 메뉴이며 거기에는 이유가 있다. 정말 태국 정통의 맛이 나며 단 맛과 신 맛의 균형이 완벽하게 맞기 때문이다.

Personally, I love the Tom Yum Soup. Its spicy, sour broth is full of all sorts of complex flavors. The shrimp is fresh as is the ginger and lemongrass that so enrich the overall flavor.

Another personal favorite is the Chicken Curry Noodle dish. This one is more light and coconutty. It’s made with thin glass noodles and pairs very well with the bolder Tom Yum soup. The green curry is also a great treat. It’s rich with coconut milk and has just the slightest kick. He also offers a nice selection of imported beers that go nicely with traditional Thai food. I’m not going to lie, I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve tried on the menu, so really, you can’t go wrong! 개인적으로는 똠양꿍을 가작 좋아한다. 특유의 맵고 새콤한 국물은 갖은 미묘한 맛들로 꽉 차 있다. 새우는 생강만큼이 라 신성하고, 레몬그라스는 전체적인 맛을 훨씬 풍부하게 해 준다. 다른 개인적인 선호 메뉴는 치킨 커리 누들이다. 이 음 식은 더 담백하고 코코넛 맛이 나고 가느다란 당면을 사용 하며, 더 진한 맛이 나는 똠양꿍과 아주 잘 어울린다. 그린 커리 역시 훌륭하다. 코코넛 밀크를 사용하여 진한 맛이 나 고, 아주 살짝 강한 맛이 난다. 그리고 전통적인 태국 음식 과 잘 어울리는 수입 맥주도 종류별로 갖추고 있다. 거짓말 을 하지는 않겠다. 필자는 메뉴에 있는 모든 음식을 먹어보 았고, 모두가 맛있었다. 그러니 진짜 무엇을 선택하든 후회 하지 않을 것이다.

style, so you can enjoy a greater variety of flavors with your friends. Because of the nature of Thai food, almost everything on the menu can easily be made vegan or gluten-free. Jay is always more than willing to cater to your specific dietary needs when possible. 하이 타이의 가격은 메뉴당 1만원에서 1만 4천원 사이 로 합리적인 편이다. 한 접시당 일인분이지만 필자는 여 럿이서 다른 메뉴를 시켜 먹어보는 것을 권한다. 그러면 더 많은 종류의 음식을 친구와 함께 즐길 수 있기 때문 이다. 태국 음식의 특성상, 메뉴의 대부분이 채식이나 글루텐 프리로 만들 수가 있다. 제이씨는 가능하다면 항 상 손님의 특정한 식이요법을 기꺼이 맞춰주려고 한다.

Hi Thai is open everyday except for Mondays, from noon till 3pm and then again from 5pm till 10pm. After hearing about how Boogie Burger is the best burger in Daegu for several months now, I finally had the chance to stop for lunch with DumbTwo the other day. So is Boogie Burger all it's cracked up to be? Yes. Yes, it is. 몇 달 동안이나 부기 버거가 대구에서 최고라는 이야기를 듣 기만 하다가, 드디어 며칠 전에 DumbTwo와 함께 이 곳에 서 점심을 먹을 기회가 생겼다. 과연 부기버거를 파헤쳐봐 야 할까? 한 번 해보자.

The menu was simple and everything was in English and easy to understand. There were also a few daily specials on the board in front of the restaurant. I had to order the "Meat Lover's Burger" while DumbTwo went for the original "Boogie Burger." We also got an order of regular fries to share. 메뉴는 단순하고 모두 영어로 되어 있어 이해하기 쉬웠다. 가게 앞에 있는 입간판에는 데일리 스페셜도 몇 가지 적혀 있었다. 필자는 ‘미트 러버스 버거’를, ‘DumbTwo’는 오리

지널 부기버거를 주문했다. 그리고 감자튀김도 나눠먹으려 고 주문했다.

The "Boogie Burger" is a burger with cheese, lettuce, and tomato, but DumbTwo asked for fresh onion as well, which is a free add-on. This burger was excellent. The patty was perfectly juicy, the bun was toasted, and sauce was in a perfect amount. All in all I think this is the most delicious basic burger in Daegu. If I had to find a negative, it would be that the burger is a little on the small size, but for 6,500 won, I don't feel like it's overpriced at all. The French fries really added to the meal though and DumbTwo was very full when we left. If you're super hungry, you could always order two, or one of the bigger burgers on the menu, such as... ‘부기버거’는 기본적으로 치즈, 상추, 토마토가 들어가 있 다. 의 양도 알맞다. 모든 것을 고려해봤을 때 이 버거는 대구에 서 가장 맛있는 기본 버거라고 생각한다. 흠을 꼭 잡아야 한 다면 버거의 크기가 작다는 것이다. 그러나 6,500원이라는 가격을 생각한다면 과하게 가격을 매긴 것도 아니다. 하지 만 감자튀김은 식사에 곁들이는 게 좋으며 DumbTwo는 배 부르게 가게를 나섰다. 정말 배가 고프다면 부기 버거를 2 개 주문하거나 아니면 메뉴에 있는 더 큰 버거 하나를 더 시 키면 된다.

The "Meat Lover's Burger" was exactly what I wanted it to be. Three patties of beef with three slices of cheese topped with bacon. What a delicious heart attack this is. Again, the bun was perfectly toasted, the patties were perfectly juicy and the bacon was nice and crisp. This is a burger that I would order again and again, if not for the fact that really want to try the "Greedy Burger" next time. “미트러버즈 버거”는 필자가 바라던 그대로였다. 가장 위에 올려진 베이컨과 슬라이스 치즈 세 장, 쇠고기 패티 세 개. 심장 건강에는 좋지 않지만 얼마나 맛있는지.. 이 버거 역시 번이 제대로 토스팅되었고, 패티도 육즙이 가득, 베이컨도 바삭하게 구웠다. 이 버거야말로 올 때마다 주문하고 싶다. 다음에 정말 ‘그리디 버거’를 먹어보고 싶지 않다면 말이다.

The "Regular Fries" are anything but they're well seasoned and very good. Not soggy at all or overly oily. I think that these are probably some of the best fries in Daegu as well. We were glad that we didn't each order fries as a single order of fries is a good amount for two people. ‘레귤러 프라이즈’ (감자튀김)은 특별하지 않았지만 시즈닝 이 잘 되어 있어서 괜찮았다. 전혀 눅눅하지도, 기름기가 과 하지도 않았다. 이 감자튀김 역시 대구에서 최고가 아닐까라 는 생각이 들었다. 각자 감자튀김을 시키지 않길 잘 했다. 하 나만으로도 두 사람이 나눠먹기에 충분한 양이었다.

So, in case I didn't make myself clear before, I'm a huge fan of Boogie Burger. Best in Daegu? I believe it is. Best in Korea? Definitely within the top five, only at a few other places will you find a burger to compare, and at this level of burger craftsmanship (burgership?) it really comes down to personal preference. I only wish this place was bigger. In case you didn't notice from the exterior shot, this place is small. Very small. There are only five tables in the place with only two of them being able to seat four people. I've heard that seats can be a rare commodity on weekends but take out is possible if you don't want to eat in or wait for a seat.

명확히 전달이 안 되었다면 다시 말하지만 필자는 부기버거 를 매우 사랑하는 팬이다. 부기버거가 대구에서 최고? 그러하 다. 한국에서 최고? 분명히 전국 5위 안에는 들 것이고, 부기 버거와 비교할 수 있는 식당은 몇 안 될 것이다. 그리고 이 정 도 수준에서 버거조리솜씨는(버거쉽?) 개인적인 선호도에 달 렸다. 필자는 식당이 좀 더 크기만을 바랄 뿐이다. 가게가 작 아서 외관을 못 알아보고 지나치는 경우를 위해 말이다. 식당 이 정말 작다. 테이블이 다섯 개 밖에 없고, 그 중에 4인용 테 이블은 두 개뿐이다. 듣기로는 주말에는 자리가 거의 없지만 실내에서 먹지 않거나 자리를 기다리기 싫은 경우, 테이크아 웃이 가능하다고 한다.

After a long and cold winter, Daegu wakes up with the excitement of spring in the air. 2015 Daegu Colorful Festival (DCF) will take place from May 1st (Fri.) to 5th (Tue) for everyone to enjoy. The DCF has grown in size over the years, so this year it is going to be held downtown in Dongseongro and the Modern Culture Alley. Daegu is turning out to be quite the hub of activity in the Korean pet world. Hosted by Daegu Metropolitan City and organized by the Daegu Veterinarian Medical Association and EXCO, the 9th Daegu Pet Show will be held on May 9th and 10th and is inviting all animal lovers and caretakers to join in the fun. 대구는 한국의 애완동물산업에 있어 중추적인 역할을 하고 있음을 알 수 잇다. 대구시가 주최하고 대구수의사협의회와 엑스코가 주관하는 제 9회 대구펫쇼가 5월 9일 10일에 열리 며 모든 동물애호가들을 축제의 장으로 초대한다.

The Daegu Pet Show has grown into the largest pet show in Korea, with over 38,000 visitors expected this year. As always, it’s the show’s mission to improve the lives of pets and pet owners around the country by promoting healthy pet care. And the fun doesn’t stop there. The Daegu Veterinarian Association will host events, health check-ups for pets, and hands-on experiences for children. Suseong University will offer a pet beauty shop. The horse-riding section will be expanded this year based on the activity’s huge popularity with children during last year’s pet show. A variety of lesser-known pets such as birds, reptiles, fish and insects will be on hand as well, allowing children to learn about new animals. 울산에서 작업을 몇 년 동안 잘 해 오며, 그들의 노력과 주위 에 있는 사람들의 재기를 합쳐 하나의 큰 이벤트로 모으자 는 데 생각이 다다랐다. 그리고 바라건대 이벤트가 흥미로운 것을 보기 위해 서울로 꼭 가지 않아도 되거나 인정받기 위 해 남쪽을 떠나지 않아도 된다는 것을 보여줄 수 있길 바랐 다. 아이디어는 수 년간 수 차례 언급되어 오고 반복되었다.

The first Big Day South festival took place in Daegu over a single day in a number of venues. It helped to introduce many artists, poets, wordsmiths, musicians and bands from Busan, Daegu and Ulsan to a wider audience as well as allowing the south a small moment of joy that was all their own. 첫번째 빅데이 사우스 페스티벨은 하루 이상 대구의 여러 장 소에서 열렸다. 이를 통해 남쪽 지방에서 그들만의 작은 즐 거움의 순간을 즐길 수 있게 했을 뿐만 아니라 부산, 대구, 울산의 많은 아티스트들과 시인, 언사, 뮤지션, 밴드 등이 더 많은 청중들에게 소개되었다.

After the success of last year’s event, Big Day South’s net has been cast wider to bring together fantastic people from Gwangju, Jeonju, Daejeon and many places in between, to showcase their skills over a full week-

end in the centre of the Ulsan. This year the festival will take place at numerous venues from Friday till Sunday and will not only include artists and musicians, but also exhibitions of local artists’ and photographers’ work around the city, a performing arts stage of spoken word and poetry, interactive art, theatrical performances as well as a movie & wine night to top it all off. 작년의 성공적인 행사 이후, 빅데이 사우스의 그물은 더 넓 게 던져졌다. 광주, 전주, 대전, 그 사이 지역의 판타스틱한 사람들을 모두 끌어모으고 그들의 실력을 주말 꼬박 울산의 중심지에서 보여주기 위해 말이다. 올해는 많은 장소에서 금 요일부터 일요일까지 축제가 열리게 될 것이다. 그리고 확실 한 성공을 위해 아티스트와 뮤지션뿐만 아니라 도시 내 지 역 예술가와 사진작가들의 전시회, 연설과 시를 발표하는 공 연 예술 무대, 인터랙티브 아트, 영화 & 와인 나이트 및 연극 퍼포먼스를 모두 포함하게 된다.

Introduction – Daegu’s community is full of talented and creative individuals. I think that is what makes Daegu such a wonderful place. There is a community or local group for everyone. One such community is the Daegu Story Slam performance group. They usually meet once a month with a different theme for each performance. The Compass sat down with Paulina Foks to learn more about the Daegu Story Slam and what it has to offer the Daegu community. What is the Story Slam? 스토리 슬램이란 무엇인가요?

The Daegu Story Slam is a live storytelling performance without the traditional competitive framework. The essentials were inspired by themoth.org. Every month there is a different theme announced several weeks prior to the event. Past themes included, “That Was Our First and Last Date,” “Now or Never,” “I Would Do It Again In A Heartbeat,” “I Almost Got Away With It,” and “I Was Never The Same.” Volunteers sign up at the beginning of the night to tell their story. A maximum of twelve storytellers are chosen at random from the Story Bucket. What are the rules? 스토리 슬램의 규칙은 어떻게 되나요?

1.The story must be true. We all love some good scifi or fantasy fiction, but these stories need to be a story about your life from your point of view. Don’t get on stage and tell us you have a dragon named Steve, as cool as that sounds. Non-fiction only, please. 1. 이야기는 사실이어야 해요. 모두들 잘 써진 공상과학 소 설이나 판타지 소설을 좋아하죠. 하지만 이 무대 위의 이 야기들은 스스로의 관점에서 보는 자신의 삶에 대한 이야 기어야 합니다. 무대 위에서 이름만큼이나 멋진 스티브라 는 용을 기르고 있다고 이야기하지 마세요. 진실된 이야기 만을 부탁해요.

2.No notes allowed. I know many storytellers go over a time line or dramatic structure to their narratives in order to stay focused under pressure. Just don’t pull out any papers and cellphones on stage or else be prepared to experience the wrath of the other storytellers. 2. 메모지를 갖고 오지 마세요. 많은 스토리텔러들이 시간 제한을 어기거나 압박감 속에서 집중을 하기 위해 잘 짜여 진 구조에서 그냥 이야기를 이어나가게만 되는 경우를 봤 어요. 단지 무대에서 휴대폰이나 어떠한 종지쪽지라도 꺼 내들지 마세요. 아니면 다른 스토리텔러들의 분노를 경험 할 준비를 단단히 하고 오세요.

3.Keep the story under nine minutes. With twelve storytellers and two breaks, the event will last precisely two hours. How did it all begin and how has the response been? 스토리 슬램은 어떻게 시작되었고 반응은 어떤가요?

From the beginning, when Douglas F. Warrick hosted the first Daegu Story Slam in April 2014, there was an overwhelming flow of enthusiastic feedback and gratitude from spectators and storytellers. He started the Story Slam because he felt it was easy to feel isolated in this country as an outsider, so he wanted to help people feel like they were part of a community. I became involved as a storyteller from the start, and later, I helped with scheduling and planning. Douglas moved back to the U.S., so as of this past February, I was honored to take over hosting the events. Many of the same people continue to return month after month to either share a story or to just sit back and enjoy them. Stories have been heart-felt, humorous, jaw-dropping, and humbling, along with an assortment of styles and flavors every individual brings to the table. It’s no wonder the Story Slam community continues to grow after each event. 시작부터 말씀드리면, 더글라스.F 워릭씨가 2014년 2월 첫 대구 스토리슬램을 주최했는데, 청중들과 스토리텔러들로 부터 열광적인 피드백과 감사의 메세지가 엄청나게 쏟아졌 어요. 더글라스씨가 스토리 슬램을 시작한 이유는 한국에서 아웃사이더로써 고립되었다는 느낌을 받기 쉽다는 것을 느 꼈기 때문이에요. 그래서 다른 사람들이 대구라는 커뮤니티 의 일부라는 것을 느끼게 해 주고 싶어 했어요. 저는 처음에 는 스토리텔러로 참여했지만 나중에는 스케쥴링과 기획을 도왔어요. 더글라스씨는 지난 2월에 미국으로 돌아갔지만 그 자리를 물려받게 되어 영광으로 생각하고 있고요. 매달 동일한 사람들 중에 다수가 계속해서 이야기를 하러 오거나 아니면 청중석에서 행사를 즐기고 있어요. 이야기에는 진심 이 어려 있고, 유머스럽고, 놀랍기도 하고, 겸허하고, 개인 각자가 준비한 여러 스타일이 섞여 있기도 해요. 매번 행사 가 열리고 난 후에 스토리 슬램 모임이 커져 나가는 것은 전 혀 놀라운 일이 아니에요.

Why do you think Daegu is a good place for this type of event? 왜 대구가 이런 행사에 적합한 곳이라고 생각하나요?

I truly believe an important aspect of succeeding as an expat is by being part of a community. The Daegu Story Slam thrives on every individual’s uniqueness. For a person baring their soul on stage, it can be empowering or healing, while observers learn to destigmatize differences and relate to others through shared experiences. Our city is full of fascinating human beings. We are all more alike than we know. And there’s only one-way to

Who can participate and how does one get more involved? 참여자격은 어떻게 되고 더 깊게 관여하고 싶다면 어떻게 해야 하나요?

Anyone who attends a Daegu Story Slam can participate. If you plan to tell a story, please arrive 30 minutes early to sign up. There are only twelve storytellers at each event so get your name in early. All names will be chosen at random throughout the night from the Story Bucket. Themes and event dates are posted at least two weeks in advance. Did their advice steer you in the right direction? Or perhaps it drove you into a brick wall? We often forget sometimes we simply have to take our own advice. These stories of significant suggestions will remind you to follow your heart, but to take your brain with you.

The current architect of the Daegu Story Slam is Paulina Foks. Foks called Chicago and Warsaw “home” before moving to Daegu just over a year ago where she now works as a college instructor. Having already travelled to 23 countries (21 solo), she has yet to see most of Southeast Asia. She gathers data for her storytelling through various escapades like hitchhiking through Turkey, trekking the Andes Mountains in Peru, eating insects in China, dodging hyenas in South Africa, spear-fishing in Greece, tomato fighting in Spain, and

continuously and intentionally getting lost in the process. For now, she is on a quest to find the perfect burrito and accepts the challenge of doing so in Korea. It is refreshing when we do get to have a new pool of talent. The wonderful thing about the DTT, is that it is filled with Daegu long-timers who keep the group steady and going, while simultaneously seeing a new group of people joining every semester. 새로운 연기자들을 맞이하게 되는 것은 신선함을 되찾는 일이에요. DTT의 멋진 점은 이 그룹을 꾸준하게 지켜온 대 구의 터줏대감들이 극단을 채우고 있고, 한편으로는 동시 에 매 학기마다 들어오는 새로운 사람들을 보는 것이에요.

A successful show has a team of people who are proud of the work they are doing, believing in it so much that they hype the Daegu community to come out and watch it. 성공적인 공연은 구성원 모두가 하고 있 는 일에 대해 자부심을 느끼고, 대구 커뮤니티를 들뜨게 만들어 나와서 공연을 보러 만들게 했다고 믿는 경우죠.

What can you tell us about Opera Spoonful? Are they fairly new to the expat theater scene? 오페라 스푼풀에 대해서는 어떤 말씀을 해주실 건가요? 외국인 연극씬에 있어 새로운 모임인가요?

Opera Spoonful was founded in early 2014, during a lull in the Daegu Theatre Troupe season. The DTT up until that point had only done ‘straight’ theatre, and Opera Spoonful filled the gap, offering a place for the combination of theatre and music. Since last year, Opera Spoonful has produced Pirates of Penzance, Communing with Shakespeare, A Lttle Night Music: An evening of Art Songs, and to finish the 2014 season we collaborated with DTT for our Caroling Christmas Event. OS is to continue to collaborate with DTT and to build their season with theirs to complement -continued on p38-

each other. The next Opera Spoonful production is an original work called Madhouse: The Musical that will be performed in May. 오페라 스푼풀은 2014 초, 대구 씨어터 그룹이 잠시 쉬는 기간에 결성되었어요. 그 때까지 DTT는 정통 연극만 해 왔 었고 오페라 스푼풀이 연극과 음악을 결합시키는 장을 마련 해줘서 그 갭을 메웠죠. 작년부터 Pirates of Penzance, Communing with Shakespeare, A Lttle Night Music: An evening of Art Songs를 오페라 스푼풀이 제작했고, 2014시즌을 마치기 위해서 DTT와 함께 크리스마스 캐롤링 이벤트를 했어요. 계속해서 DTT와 콜라보레이션을 해 나갈 것이고, DTT는 나름대로 시즌을 해 나가기 위해서 서로 상 호보완을 할 거예요. 다음 오레파 스푼풀의 공연은 Madhouse: The Musical 이라는 오리지날 작품이고 5월달에 할 예정이에요.

What can you tell us about the challenges of putting on performances in a Daegu? 대구에서 공연을 하는 데에 대한 어려움은 어떤 것이 있었나요?

Getting a theater is always a challenge! We've had some members, who speak a good amount of Korean, come through. That has been helpful. Ideally you want to perform for masses, and so ideally I wish we could perform in both Korean and English. For our performance of the Princess Bride in 2013, we had an expat who went above and beyond and actually helped translate the script. So we had subtitles for that show and it was awesome to share some of our American culture and humor with Koreans. That kind of performance is hard

to do every time. 극장을 찾는 것이 항상 문제예요! 한국어 를 잘 할 줄 아는 단원이 있어서 해결이 되긴 했어요. 정말 도움이 되었죠. 이상적으로는 대중을 위해 공연을 하고 싶고 그래서 한국어와 영어 모두로 공연을 할 수 있으면 좋겠어 요. 2013년 Princess Bride를 공연했을 때, 원래 하던 일 은 아니지만 외국인을 통해 대본 번역을 도왔어요. 그래서 공연을 위한 자막을 얻을 수 있었고, 미국의 문화와 유머를 한국인들과 함께 조금이나마 나눌 수 있어서 정말 좋았어요. 그런 공연을 매번 하기는 어려운 일이에요. The 24 hour theater performance sounds intense, what is the biggest challenge? 24시간 씨어터 공연은 꽤 힘들어 보이는데요, 가장 어려운 점은 무엇인가요?

It actually is not that difficult. We consider it one of the easier shows we do. When you have a mix of people who are night owls, ooze with creativity and feed off each other's energy then you have a sure fire way to make a successful 24 hour show. It is one of our low key ways to encourage newcomers to act with little commitment, and for actors to also write and direct. 사실 그렇게 어렵지 않아요. 저희는 우리가 할 수 있는 가 장 쉬운 공연 중 하나라고 생각해요. 창의력이 흘러 넘치 고, 서로의 에너지를 빨아 들이는 올빼미 스타일의 사람들 과 함께 한다면 성공적인 24시간 공연을 할 수 있는 가장 확 실한 방법을 갖고 있는 셈이 되죠. 그다지 적극적으로 하지 않고도 새로 온 사람들이 연기를 할 수 있도록 격려할 수 있 는 차분한 방법 중 하나이고, 배우들이 대본을 쓰고 연출을 하게끔도 하죠.

The Neighbors Up North: Russia’s Growing Interest In Daegu Most of Daegu’s medical tourism attention goes to the foreigners already living in the city whose families might be enticed to visit for medical treatment. Deceptively close to the Korean peninsula, however, is Russia, in particular Vladivostok only a short flight away. Daegu Metropolitan City and EXCO have made a concerted effort recently to focus on Korea’s Russian neighbors, culminating into a promotional trip to Vladivostok early this past February that opened up new lines of communication and moved Daegu more squarely into the medical tourism conversation. Representatives from Daegu Haany University, Daegu Fatima Hospital, BL Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, and EXCO made the productive four day trip to Russia. While there, the team visited the Korean Tourism Organization office and local hospitals and medical schools such as Far Eastern Federal University, Pacific State Medical University and Nevron Medical Center to establish new business agreements. At Nevron, the delegates spoke with patients about their interest in re-

ceiving treatment in Daegu. The response was positive, with patients expressing interest in oriental medicine and trust in the medical skill of Korean doctors. The team also invited 15 local agencies to a Daegu promotional event to familiarize local travel agents with Daegu’s medical tourism facilities and to invite them to Daegu’s Medi Expo in June. Overall the trip was very fruitful for the Daegu delegation, which was able to debrief afterwards and evaluate the city’s progress as a medical tourism destination. The team concluded that similar trips need to happen in the future, and that any tourism budget should accommodate increased communication between the two countries. Additionally, Daegu needs to make a larger effort in providing information in Russian, and comforts such as Russian food for potential customers. A basic but critical requirement for Russian patients is a quality Russian interpreter. Daegu has offered

Local Russian interpreter Aygul, who has been with Fatima Hospital as a coordinator for Russian medical tourists since April 2014, shared her experiences and her vision for improvements based on her interactions with patients. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Daegu needs a more organized education program for Russian interpreters, a Daegu/Gyeongbuk tour guide book in Russian, and greater transparency for hospital price policies,â&#x20AC;? The Neighbors Up North: Russia’s Growing Interest In Daegu medical options that includes treatments for more significant ailments is also desirable, as well as the ability to serve people of varying incomes. “Daegu should try to meet the needs of medical tourists,” she added. “They need to offer treatment for serious illnesses and chronic diseases and provide room and board in the hospital. We also need more cheap accommodation options such as guest houses.” The city has a lot of work to do but it’s important to remember that the industry is still in its’ infancy, and that Daegu has already made magnificent strides in developing a comprehensive network of support for Russian tourists. “We see a 10% increase in the number of Russian patients every year,” Aygul mentioned, “and they come from many different regions: Khabarovsk, Kamchatka, Irkutsk, Yakutsk and so on.” Especially noteworthy is Daegu’s performance in relation to other Korean cities. “Daegu is Korea’s Medi-City designated by the Korean government,” said Aygul. “Our service is cheaper than Seoul’s and we offer more and better interpreting services. In addition, Daegu’s pick-up and drop-off service from Daegu International Airport, same-day test results, and tourist health insurance all receive positive marks from Russian tourists. The city is off to an excellent start.” With the good reviews rolling in and with an expanding list of amenities tailored for the Russian people, Daegu should feel confident in its’ future as a medical tourist destination for their neighbors up north.

Finding something new in Daegu is always exciting. Finding diving in Daegu was a surprise! I was under the impression that I would have to go to the East, West or South coast to do any kind of diving. My friend Melissa Hollingsworth found a place that could teach you to dive here in Daegu. 대구에서 무엇인가 새로운 것을 찾아내는 일은 항상 즐겁다. 특 히 다이빙을 할 수 있는 곳을 찾아낸 것은 의외였다. 동해안이나 서해안, 남해안에나 가야 이런 다이빙을 할 수 있을 것이라고 생 각했는데 친구인 멜리사가 이 곳 대구에서 다이빙을 배울 수 있 는 곳을 찾아냈다.

At Duryu Park, there is a fantastic swimming pool. On my first visit, I was with my fellow teachers from the “Daegu American School” and the “Daegu High School.” The plan was to have a dive experience and we were pleasantly surprised to find a 45 foot deep Olympic size pool. For some of us, it was the first time diving (breathing underwater is difficult for some people). I am an Advanced Open Water diver and was there to get information for this story; while some in our group were facing their fears by trying something that they thought they would never do. Others just like the idea of having the “SCUBA” (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) experience. I am not going to lie, in February the water is cold if you’re not in a heated pool, even with a wet suit on. While the newcomers got briefed on the do’s and don’ts of diving, I started taking pictures. The main thing that the SCUBA instructor at SCUBA World (Hwan-gyu Choi) wanted was for everyone to have fun and enjoy the experience. 두류 공원에는 굉장히 좋은 수영장이 있다. 수영장에 처음 갔을 때, 대구외국인학교와 대구고등학교의 동료 선생님들과 함께 가 게 되었다. 다이빙을 경험해보는 것이 계획이었는데 45피트 깊 이의 올림픽 규격 사이즈 풀장을 보고 놀랐다. 일행 중 몇 명은 처음으로 다이빙을 하게 되었다. (어떤 사람들은 수중에서 호흡 하는 것이 어렵기도 하다.) 필자는 어드밴스트 오픈 워터 다이버 였기에 단지 취재를 위해 가 본 것이었다. 반면 일행 중 몇 명은 절대 하지 않으리라고 생각했던 것을 해 보게 되어 두려움을 느 끼기도 했다. 다른 사람들은 스쿠버(자급식 잠수 장치)를 경험 해보게 된 것을 좋아했다. 굳이 거짓말을 하지는 않겠다. 온수 풀에 들어가지 않는 한 2월의 수온을 여전히 낮고, 젖은 잠수복 을 입더라도 춥다. 초보자들이 해야할 것과 하지 말아야 할 것에 대해 간단히 교육을 받는 동안 사진을 찍기 시작했다. SCUBA World의 강사(최환규)가 원한 것은 모두가 재미있게 경험 자체 를 즐기는 것이었다.

On my next visit (March 7th), I got a chance to see some Boy Scouts from Camp Walker have their first experience diving in Daegu. On this trip, Dive Master Jee-hun Kim joined us. The boys are part of the Boys Scouts of America Venture Crew #73. Ventures are from age 14-20, co-ed and focused on experiential adventure, personal development and service to their community. Instead of talking about taking photography they go out and take pictures and instead of talking about SCUBA, they get in the water and so forth. The boys diving today are Liam Baek, Morgan Baek, Timothy Jones and Dylan Nichols. This particular event was the last elective Liam needed to complete his Ranger Award. The Ranger Award is earned through advanced knowledge of the outdoors and other specialized areas. All in all the boys had a great time diving and taking underwater pictures. 3월 7일에 두 번째로 방문했을 때는 캠프 워커에서 온 보이 스 카웃 단원들이 대구에서 처음으로 다이빙을 경험해 보는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 이 번에는 다이빙 마스터인 김지훈씨와 함께 했 다. 학생들은 America Venture Crew #73 소속의 단원들이었 다. Venture는 14에서 20세 사이에 해당하는 단원이며, 남녀 모 두 해당된다. 그리고 경험을 위주로 한 모험과 자기개발, 지역사 회에 대한 봉사활동 등을 중시한다. 사진찍는 것에 대해 이야기 하는 대신 학생들은 나가서 사진을 찍고, 스쿠버에 대해 이야기 를 하신 대신에 물 속으로 들어가서 코스를 진행했다. 오늘 다이 빙을 한 단원들은 리암 백, 모건 백, 티모시 존스, 딜런 니콜라스 였다. 이 특별한 행사는 리암이 Ranger Award를 완수하기 위 한 마지막 선택 사항이었다. Ranger Award는 야외와 다른 전 문적인 분야에 대한 고급 지식을 통해 획득할 수 있는 것이다. 대 체로 소년들은 다이빙을 하고 물 속에서 사진을 찍으며 매우 즐 거운 시간을 보냈다.

It is easy to claim that nearly all the victims and perpetrators have long since passed. True enough. But the indignities are timeless; they continue today. They are monumentally exacerbated by Japan's unwillingness to apologize for its actions. The historical account should be required reading for every Korean, friend of Korea, and anyone concerned with the abuse and torture of women anywhere. The story of the Daughters of the Dragon is riveting and searing and at times, unrelenting. But being drawn out of my comfort zone, I think, was part of my due diligence to more fully appreciate this important piece of history. 모든 한국인과 한국의 친구, 여성 학대와 고문에 대해 걱정하는 그 누구든지 이 역사적인 이야기를 반드시 읽어봐야 한다. ‘용의 딸들’의 이야기는 흥미를 불러일으키는 동시에 혹독하며 가차없 는 상황이 계속된다. 하지만 마음이 편안한 곳에서 끌려나온 것 은 이 중요한 역사의 순간을 충분히 더 제대로 인식해야 하기 위 한 실사의 일부분이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었다.

This bitter history continues unabated. The few surviving comfort women (Oi Ahn Bu, in Korean) continue their weekly protests in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul. I am reminded of the powerful Memoirs of a Geisha, by Arthur Golden, intriguingly also a book seen from a woman's perspective, likewise written by a man. Like Memoirs, Daughters of the Dragon is a mesmerizing story, one difficult to face, yet nearly impossible to put down. 필자는 아서 골든이 게이샤의 추억을 떠올린다. 흥미롭게도 여 성의 시각에서 보는 책이며, 비슷하게 남자에 의해 쓰여진 팩이 다. 회고록 용의 딸은 완전히 넋을 빼놓는 이야기이다. 직면하기 는 어렵지만 내려놓기는 불가능하다.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s.
