Chiliboy New York Style Chili In Daegu Written and photographed by Brian Van Hise

One of the increasingly trendy streets here in Daegu is by and far the Kim Kwang Seok alley located between SuSeong Bridge and VIPS in central Daegu. Leisurely Saturday and Sunday afternoons are often spent best here, among the various local art galleries, locally-owned cafes, craft dealers, and occasional pop-up restaurants. One such walk-up eatery is the new Chiliboy, with co-owners Steve Dana and John Healy at the helm. Offering New York style bowls of chili, 3 kinds of baguette sandwiches, and some killer single size key lime pies, Chiliboy is a breath of fresh air to this already hip and artsy street. It’s rare to find a cup of chili that packs a wallop like Chiliboy, served best with the complimentary baguette slices that come with a bowl. Before coming to Korea, Steve, the brainchild behind the Chiliboy brand, used to prepare the chili for his family. After arriving in Korea and heeding the advice of his daughter, Sara Jane, who said: “Appa, if you feel lonely there, cook for someone”, Steve first introduced his chili on the streets of Daegu. “I made a batch of chili one day,” Steve says. “I took a cardboard box, and went down to SuSeong Gu Cheong station. I set up on the street and I just started handing out samples and letting people try it and selling some. After meeting people and doing that for an hour or two, I thought: ‘This is great.’ So, every weekend, I 8

started setting up and bringing a table and carrying my stuff. And then it started to grow. I started delivering to Keimyung University, to Yeungnam University, to Daegu Catholic University. Everyone was really going crazy about the chili and it really jazzed me to keep doing it.” As the popularity grew among the university circles around town, Steve met with John who himself had been crafting his own baguette creations. John explains: “I’d been making sandwiches for my wife and family for a few years and I thought I had it pretty much figured out.” He pauses for a moment, as a Korean woman walks by Chiliboy’s shop wearing a US Army jacket. He attempts to suggestively sell her a sandwich, convinced that the pairing of US jacket with US -style sandwiches is a good one. Pushing back his sunglasses, he carries on, “I found the baguette. I sourced the product and kind of figured it out. My wife’s best friend said: ‘You should sell these things. Koreans would go crazy for them.’ So, it was on the back of my mind. The trigger was meeting Steve. This is my pathway into this business.” And business is booming. Not only is Chiliboy a new hot spot for expats living in Daegu, but the Korean populace as well seems to have responded enthusiastically too. John explains that when Koreans hear the word “chili”, most think of chili sauce, and not the bean, meat, and Daegu Foodie - Chiliboy

cheese concoction so loved in the US. “It’s very new to them. They weren’t used to it but I got a really great response”, Steve says. John nods and takes over, “One of the ways that we are combining and channeling our passion is trying to engage and educate Koreans about this kind of food which is a bit mysterious. Part of the joy is interacting with people. It’s cool to share the experience.” Chiliboy is located off the main thoroughfare at Kim Kwang-seok road, in the alley jutting off from

NamuBurger (look for the large white cafe with massive front patio area). You’ll be able to get your slow-cooked chicken chili fix for 6,000 won per cup and a sandwich for 6,000 won as well. Lime pies run for 3,000 won and beer and water are on the menu also. T-shirts bearing the Chiliboy logo are available for 20,000 won, so you can show your support for the brand. Chiliboy is open every Saturday and Sunday, from early afternoon until they sell out for the day. Keep in touch with them online at: http://chiliboy.co.kr/

La Salud Happy And Healthy Written and photographed by Gary Lynn

I got an opportunity to interview Chef Lee Tae Kyu (TK). He is the owner and operator of La Salud. I had heard about La Salud from a good friend and had an awesome experience the first time I went there. It was so good that I wanted to share it with you. Chef TK and his wife Kim Jung Min of one year are from Daegu and opened the restaurant only four months ago. They moved from a restaurant they started in 2011 at Chim san- dong, Bukgu, which was near the baseball stadium. Many of the Samsung Lions baseball team ate dinner there. Mitch Talbolt and Rick van den Hurk are big fans of Chef TK. TK said he was fat when he was young, so he wanted to make healthy food –low carbs, high protein with low oil. With the help of personal trainer Joe Hyung Woo, TK learned to workout, lose weight, and eat healthy. This changed his life. Clothes began to fit again. He’s happier and healthier now than he has ever been. TK wants to share his happy experience with everyone in Daegu. La Salud is located across from Suseong Lake on the 22, if you reach the 71 you passed it. The restaurant has an open and relaxing look about it. Chef TK uses fresh baked buns and low fat patties for his burgers. There’s pulled pork sandwiches and pork ribs along with three cheese macaroni and cheese with bacon on top. It's so very good. There are salads and other sandwiches 10

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

but my favorite has to be the Fish and Chips. He is very proud to say only healthy, delicious food is served here. La Salud means health in Spanish. I spoke to several costumers and like to share what they had to say. Kat Garcia was there with her daughter Maddie and brought her friend Jill Beddingfield and her kids Joseph and Hanna. It was Kat’s second time and Jill’s first. At the end of their meal, I asked how it was. Jill responded, ”It’s ridiculously good!!” She is planning to bring her friends and family. I also spoke to three freshmen girls from the Daegu National University of Education, Go You Kyuny , Song Min Young, and Kim Ga Eun each said their meal was delicious. I also ran into Rich Giles and his girlfriend Hyunkyung Cho. He’s from New Hampshire and she’s from Daegu. He’s been teaching here for seven years and he told me that his burger was excellent. He said the burgers are bigger, better and tastier than a well-known burger shop downtown and the milkshake is amazing. You can’t argue with that fact for sure. La Salud is open from 11:30 to 12:00 midnight (MonFri with a break from 3-5), on the weekend 11:30 to 12:00 midnight no break. You can order on line at lasalud@naver.com or call an order in at 053-585-9000. Great food made by good people.

E-World & 83 Tower The Happiest Place In Daegu

Written and photographed by Neysha Bauer / Translated by Yujeong Lee

If you’ve ever gazed up at Daegu’s horizon, you may have noticed a needle point building erupting towards the clouds. 83 Tower, also known as the Daegu Tower, stands out like a sore thumb, mocking the architecture of old Korea that’s typically found in this city. Just below the octagonal shaped building, you’ll find E-World, which I like to call, "The Happiest Place in Daegu."

my senses since that day. However, I have to thank the Sky Jump for luring me towards this wonderful place; I’m so happy I stumbled on E-World and the 83 Tower when I did. Aside from almost making a terrible decision, there’s so much more to see and do like riding a roller coaster 10 times in a row when the crowds are low.

I visited E-World for the first time a few months back with the intention of flying off the Sky Jump at 83 Tower from hundreds of feet in the air. Fortunately, it’s under repair (concerning much?) and I’ve certainly come to 20

but I was pleasantly surprised. Since that day I’ve been back twice, and I just can’t get enough! The adrenaline rush of a great ride is one of my favorite feelings and at E-World’s Young Town Plaza (where you’ll find all the coolest rides) my blood was pumping. Who says it’s no fun to hang upside down? If you agree, you’ll have to try the Himalaya and the Camelback.

For the sake of full disclosure, I must confess that I almost peed my pants when I tried the Sky Cycle. It’s the type of ride you walk up to and think, “Oh, this will be a piece of cake!” Until you realize you’re riding some contraption that slightly resembles a really smart eighth graders shop project. The pedals were rusty, I wobbled (and shrieked) back and forth, and I just couldn’t bring myself to look down because I knew this could be the 22

end. Fortunately, we made it out alive and here I am to tell you that if you’re on the fence, the answer is no. Don’t do it. It’s absolutely not worth it.

Among all the other entertaining attractions like the Ghost House, Top Spin (my favorite!) and the giant monkey that greets you at the entrance, there’s also a mini-zoo. I was so excited to see a chameleon eat his lunch and the giant anaconda. Most of all, I was quite pleased with the bird observatory full of love birds and cockatiels. I was very happy to see how well the animals seemed to be taken care of at E-World.

I had an extremely enjoyable experience at Daegu’s E-World and 83 Tower. I would highly recommend anyone living here or passing through to visit for an afternoon. You can get discounted tickets after 5:00pm, although at 33,000 won, the full price is quite affordable. It’s the perfect place to spend a romantic day with your significant other, especially because you have the option to see the entire city of Daegu lit up from above at night. I went with my girlfriends and had a blast; laughing the entire time.

However, here in the Daegu metropolitan area, there is a special Buddhist statute that might make all of your dreams and prayers come true.

On the Gyeongsan side of Palgongsan is a single granite Buddhist sculpture that is about 4m tall and has a 15cm hat on his thick stone head. It is located on the peak of Gwan on a high rough area of Palgongsan. This sculpture is a special stone seated medicine Buddha called Gatbawi.

According to legend, a big crane would fly every night to guard the Gatbawi Buddha while it was being created. Because of this, it is reputed as a miraculous Buddha stone in where if you truly believe in your prayers, wishes and dreams with all of your heart, then they will be responded by this Buddha statue and eventually come true.

This could be one of the main reasons why Gatbawi is so busy during late fall when parents are praying and wishing that their high school kids do well on the university entrance exam taken every year.

Gatbawi is located on the Gyeongsan side of Palgongsan but it is still a pretty good drive to get there if you don't live near Gyeongsan's Hayang. When I went there, I came from the downtown Gyeongsan area and it took about 45 minutes to drive there. It is mostly a country drive once you get past Yeungnam University.

When I arrived to Gatbawi, it took another 45 minutes to go to the top from the parking lot and Gatbawi's Service Plaza. It was a very difficult but interesting hike as it was mostly all uphill. Once you get to the entrance gates of Gatbawi, the uphill turns into stairs, many, many, many stairs.

On the hike up, I saw many street market type places that were selling souvenirs, and street market food and hot drinks. The hot drinks were nice as it was a cold day with strong gusts of wind blowing during different times of my hike to the top.

About 200 meters from the top, there is an area where some people were bowing and praying to Buddha on a floor mat, with lighted candles all around the area.

As I continued my hike up more stairs, I reached another point (about 100 meters from the top) which more people were praying and bowing to Buddha. I finally reached to the top of Gwan Peak (after hiking up more stairs). At the top is where you will see the Gatbawi Buddhist sculpture with his hat. Many people were on mats praying and bowing to this sculpture.

I saw a beautiful aerial view of Palgongsan from the top as well. And on the Buddhist sculpture were many coins stuck to the stone. If you were able to stick your coin into the stone, this also means that your wishes, prayers and dreams would come true later. There was also lighted candles in front of the prayers who were bowing down on floor mats.

On the hike down to the bottom, it was a lot easier (especially on the legs) as it took shorter (as it always does when you hike down mountains). It took only around 25 to 30 minutes to go down. However going down, you have to be careful because the stairs are a little steep so watch your step. Despite it being a difficult hike to the top, it was very good for me. I got some well-needed exercise and Enjoy Daegu - Gatbawi

of course it is all mountainous so the air was fresh (which is always good). So, if you have time and want to say a special prayer (and have it come true), then I recommend you to go to Daehan-ri, Wacheon-myeon in Gyeongsan (by car or bus - Bus number 803), and then take the hike up to Gatbawi especially with the spring season coming soon.

Daegu's Enchanting Kim Kwang-seok Walking Street

The Road Home Written and photographed by Steven Schuit

Like a musical rose poking its head up through the cement caverns of the city, Daegu's Kim Kwang-seok Road neighborhood intoxicates and surprises its guests. Sprouting between the Kyungbuk University Hospital and Daegu Bank subway stops on the Green Line, the area is named in memory of one of Korea's most famous musicians, folk-singer, Kim Kwang-seok, a native of Daegu, whose songs are still highly popular with Koreans years after his tragic passing in 1996. The area, approximately 25 or so square blocks, is undergoing an artistic and culinary renaissance in one of Daegu's older neighbor-hoods. Hip coffee shops, restaurants, art studios and other enterprises dot the landscape. Wanderers are rewarded at every turn along quaint side streets by sights, sounds and the smell of fresh food. The road ("kil" in Korean) is nestled between the river and an old Korean market and residential area. They melt seamlessly together to create a walking experience highly pleasing to the senses. We stumbled upon the neighborhood when friends told us about their new take-out joint, Chili-Boy, located along a side street. Their bright red and white stall serves up great sandwiches and chili. We've been going back to the area on a regular basis for art shows and to discover things we may have missed on previous visits. 28

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

Entrances to the neighborhood use art to remind you of its namesake, Kim Kwang-seok (1964-96), whose guitar and harmonica playing found its way into the hearts of Koreans nationwide. Traversing along the area's main walking street you encounter a number of interactive exhibits that engage and entertain. At the center is a pleasant sun-filled amphitheater for performers. During our visits the sounds of guitar playing and singing could be heard drifting over the walls, filling nearby alleys and sitting areas. The smiles of the business vendors and the cheerful displays of art, ceramics and trinkets make strolling there a joyful experience. It's somewhat like a playful oasis in the midst of Daegu's more typical tenor of hustle and bustle. Kim Kwang-seok Road is a special destination, a pleasant and celebratory reminder of the man and his music.

Come Ride The Friendly Skies The Sky Rail Is Open For Business

Translated by Kate Ko / Proofread and revised by Brian V. Hise

Daegu’s new monorail, under its nickname ‘Sky Rail’, has performed well in its test drives. Daegu emphasizes its importance as the first monorail in Korea. The opening ceremony for the monorail, Line 3, was held on April 23, 2015, at the Suseong-gu Children’s Hall Square. The ceremony was held with more than one thousand people, including Daegu citizens. The monorail officially opened at 2pm. ‘하늘열차’(스카이 레일)라는 애칭을 가진 모노레일의 성능 시험은 순조롭게 진행되었다. 대구시는 전국 최초의 모노레 일 운행기관으로 거듭나게 된다고 강조했다. 3호선 모노레 일 개통식은 오는 23일, 대구 수성구 어린이 회관 광장에서 열릴 예정이다. 시민 등 1000여 명이 참석한 가운데 기념식 을 열고 23일 오후 2시부터 본격 운행한다.

30

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

The monorail now enables Daegu to be a one-hour living zone, connecting north, south, east and west sides of Daegu together. Also, it now takes less than 20 minutes to go from Chilgok, Buk-gu to Bummul, Suseong-gu! Aside from it being a great way to literally skip over traffic congestion on the streets below, the new rail offers a chance to help develop rural areas of Daegu such as Paldallo, Dalseongno and Myeongduckno by vitalizing local businesses.

The monorail cruises at 50~70km/h and the average distance between stations is 800m. It takes about 2 minutes to hop between stations so it is expected that the existing travel time, 70 minutes by car, can be cut down to 46 minutes by using the monorail. The monorail’s passenger capacity is 390 people.

As a ‘moving observatory’ where you can glance over Daegu’s night and day landscape at a height of 10m, the monorail is expected to be not only a landmark of Daegu, but also a specialty of Daegu by promoting diverse exterior designs on the trains.

Daegu Mayor Young Jin Gwon said, “The monorail is a valuable asset to be preserved for our posterity. I believe that the monorail will accelerate Daegu’s economic development. We will do our best for a successful opening of the monorail.”

Like subway lines 1 and 2, the monorail fee is 1,200 won per adult passenger. The monorail is connected to Line 1 at Myeongdeok Station and Line 2 at Sinnam Station, where you can transfer to the subway line.

Korean Folk Village Seeking Tradition In The Modern Age Written and photographed by Charisse Windebank / Translated by Yujeong Lee

http://www.thesoulseeker.com/blog/travel/suwon-korean-folk-village/ I’ve heard good things about Novotel from other DOD employees and friends. I found one in Suwon about a 20 minute drive from the village. It was a little bit more than the Dragon Hill Lodge, but much nicer. They had floor to ceiling windows in our room, buffet breakfast with an array of styles from Asian dim sum to American style cuisine, the espresso machine was serving good cups of latte that rival Starbucks, on-site parking, and the staff spoke English. This particular location was brand new and just opened December 2014.

It was also difficult to find using our GPS. It wouldn’t allow us to input the address and since it was fairly new, the nearby hotels category wasn’t finding it. I called and asked for landmarks around the area. She wasn’t able to give me directions, but once I input Suwon Station it was just down the street.

I really enjoyed the city and plan to go back to Suwon. Once we were within the city limits, a nice temple/castle was beckoning for me to visit and explore. A wall originating from the temple surrounds the perimeter of the city. The traffic was bearable

and not as congested as Seoul.

We headed for the Korean Folk Village around 10 am and I received a text from my Aunt that they were going to be there around 10:30. It was perfect timing as we arrived soon after. We paid our general admission fee was 15,000 (per adult) won and my 2 year old son's admission fee was free. There was a portion of the village that included the amusement rides, but that was an additional 15,000 won per person.

We picked up a map of the area that was available in Korean and English. We caught the first show of the day which was traditional Korean dancers and drummers. After the show we hurried to the performance area and requested for a photo with one of the dancers. They politely obliged and flashed the peace sign, but in Korea it’s not meant for peace but more a gesture that is synonymous when taking a photo, much like smiling is the norm. Most Koreans have no idea where it originates, but speculation have spread through the internet. It was the usual tightrope walker performance until he started to up the ante by jumping on the rope, balancing a large kimchi jar and all the while holding a fan. It was quite entertaining and Jensen loved it! He was signing for more when he finished.

While walking around and taking in the sites, a man was dressed in full warrior uniform. We asked him if we could take a photo and he proceeded to show me his wrist band and announced that he was not an employee but a visitor. I thanked him for taking the time and taking a photo with us and was surprised that he was in full traditional Korean samurai uniform.

While we waited for our photo to be printed, we went to a restaurant on the premises. I ordered the shrimp pancake and Christian had the bulgogi. The ladies ordered bibimbap, one of my favorites. I keep forgetting to take photos of our food. I will need to try and remember the next time.

We had a great time catching up with family and enjoyed meeting new friends. The Folk Village was educational and a nice place to visit for both indoor and outdoor activities. We weren’t able to walk the entire village so we will have to make another stop when we go back to Suwon for a visit.

Medical Tourism Makes a Splash at the 7th World Water Forum Written by Matthew Caracciolo / Photos submitted by the EXCO Convention Team

The 7th World Water Forum was the latest large-profile gathering to put Daegu on the global map, with over 35,000 participants representing 170 countries squeezed into the city and Gyeongbuk province. With this sort of rare spotlight on the city, Daegu Medical Tour pulled out all the stops and promoted a dizzying array of services and treatments to the international guests. Both the local medical tourism industry and the visitors that braved the cultural barrier and tried a service came out pleased with the results. The Daegu Medical Tour promotional booth was one of the more popular spots at the forum, strategically located in the highly visible first floor lobby of EXCO. Besides offering helpful information, the booth itself was quite the attraction, with an oriental medicine doctor on hand daily to offer basic health check-ups, blood pressure tests, scalp assessments, and even acupuncture. In addition, a rotation of two clinics a day from the Daegu area was present to provide consultations for Forum-goers. Representatives from nearly all of the

city’s major players came out to ply their services, including Daegu Catholic University Medical Center, Pureun Hospital, Fatima Hospital, Samil Hospital, Nune Eye Hospital, BL Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center, Kkonip Oriental Clinic, V Plastic Surgery, All For Skin Dermatology Clinic, Seongseo Hanmi Hospital, Duk Young Dental Hospital, Yeungnam University Hospital, Kwak’s Hospital, and Tae-o-reum Oriental Medical Clinic. These clinics covered health screenings, obstetrics and gynecology, plastic surgery, hair transplant, dentistry, dermatology, ophthalmology, and oriental medicine between them. Visitors that signed up for a procedure at one of these institutions received free transportation, interpreter services, and a souvenir. The changing line-up encouraged repeated visits; a visitor from Republic of South Sudan visited the promotion booth and received consultation from Nune Eye Hospital and All For Skin Clinic. Then she actually visited both clinics and got a check-up for her eyes and scalp. By the end of the Forum, the booth pulled in about 1,300

visitors and about 390 visitors got simple treatment on site. Many of the people that visited the booth and signed up for a treatment had very positive things to say about their experience. In a voluntary questionnaire, several people specifically mentioned the friendliness and helpfulness of the Koreans they met through the process, as well as their wealth of medical know-how and capabilities. A few guests mentioned their appreciation for the kind support they received from the Koreans that helped them. Indeed, the guests’ most common complaint was that they couldn’t stay longer and experience more. Particularly inspiring were the stories of people trying oriental medicine for the first time. One guest commented on how western medicine had told her nothing could be done about her pain. She was happy with the results of her acupuncture treatment.

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

In addition to the Forum, the 2015 Daegu Yangnyeongsi Herb Medicine Culture Festival was held from April 15 to April 19, providing a chance for foreign visitors to experience more of Korea’s traditional culture. A Medical Tour Promotion Booth was present at the festival as well, ensuring that visitors didn’t miss a chance to experience Daegu’s diverse medical facilities. With so many procedures performed on such a large number of foreigners from such a wide variety of countries, it’s safe to say that the 7th World Water Forum was the perfect opportunity for Daegu Medical Tour to put their best foot forward, and that the week was a raging success for the city’s medical tourism industry. Perhaps the popularity of the program will set a precedent for future high-profile conferences in the city.

The second, the Flower Pet Contest, is open to anyone who grows plants at home and wishes to show off their gardening chops.

In addition to the two main contests, a host of subsidiary events will keep visitors busy. Aspiring florists can attend the Florist Seminar, perhaps one day leading to a slot in the Flower Design Competition, or enjoy the Flower Arrangement Demonstration led by renowned florists. Fans of flowers need not worry that the exhibition is more commercial than floral, with 70% of the show’s exhibition space devoted to the display of floral arrangements. The show will feel more like a conservatory than a convention, as colorful and fragrant as the Garden of Eden. Hours for this year’s Daegu Flower Show are 10:0019:00. Tickets are 7000 won for adults and 6000 won for youth. Visitors can preregister for a 3000 won discount on www.flowerdaegu.kr (Korean language only).

Fleeting Spring Blossoms A Reflection On Life In Korea Written and photographed by Erin Hassanzadeh

They abruptly appear; soft as silk, delicate as a rose. Before long, they blow effortlessly through the air and float perfectly onto the ground. Just as soon as the cherry blossoms reveal their beauty – they are gone. How can it be that just as the wondrous buds arrive – they disappear? It seems unfair that such a grand display of beauty can fade so fast, it’s possible to miss it entirely. Just as gold’s rarity makes it more expensive, the short life of the cherry blossoms makes them more spectacular. In fact, the most beautiful things tend 42

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

to disappear the quickest. It’s part of their wonder and appeal. The delicate, pale-colored leaves littering the ground around the nearly naked trees are the last semblance of the beauty and aroma that intoxicated the peninsuila for a few, fleeting weeks. We all know that life itself passes quickly. But within our lives, there are millions of individual fleeting moments. These moments can last a second, like when you pass someone handsome on the street or share a smile with

a stranger on the subway. Fleeting moments can last a day, like the last day of a beach vacation – when the sun sets too soon and you wish it wasn’t fading so fast. My entire year in Korea is fleeting. Right now, I’m in the midst of a year long, fleeting moment. Life’s moments can be delightful - like spending the day with someone you love, sitting and listening to a rainstorm or talking on the phone with an old friend. Of course, they can also be painful - like the funeral of a loved one or losing friendships or relationships that you thought would last forever. During a recent visit to Gyeongju, I stood in the middle of the street and admired the falling cherry blossom petals as they delicately swirled through the air. As the sun shined down on my face and I breathed in the warming spring air, I wondered if I would ever get to experience the wondrous sight of cherry blossom season in Korea again. The thought that I may not panicked me. You see, if you recognize the shortness of life’s moments in their midst, they can become a strange source of sadness. Sadness from realizing the bliss of life’s moments cannot last. The reassuring part of this realization is that you’ll rarely feel the same genuine happiness experienced in a limited moment. One of my most precious events of my year happened in February, when 130 of my students walked across the wooden stage in our unheated gymnasium to receive their middle school diplomas. Certainly, that day was a milestone in their young lives but in mine as well. In the last year I graduated from student to teacher. Something I still can’t believe some days. As I peered out to scan up and down the rows of graduates, I saw smiles, giggles, laughter and blank stares painted across the students’ faces. Looking at my students in that moment made me realize how many impactful they have been in my life for the last several months. I saw students who worked harder than anyone else in their classes, students who wrote me the sweetest notes and students who shuffled into class ten minutes late without even attempting to give me an excuse for their tardiness. My students have been my greatest stressor and challenge but they have also been part of my happiest moments and my biggest triumphs in Korea. Often times the most powerful moments are shared with the people you love.

-continued on p44-

43

As I looked on proudly from the side of the bone-chilling auditorium, I recognized that the ceremony would barely last an hour and that my students would immediately run off with their friends and family and that I most likely wouldn’t see them again – a startling thought. Like budding blossoms, they all have potential and promise that hasn’t quite revealed itself yet. Their succession onto high school also reminded me of the ticking time; and how my time in Korea is dwindling rapidly. As the ceremony was coming to a close, I felt a rush of emotion. It was hard to decipher exactly how I was feeling - was it a slight sense of panic? A hint of sadness? My mind flooded with questions: Did I impact my students? Would they remember me? What would they all go one to do with their lives? Yet at the same time, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction and joy. That’s the other thing about fleeting moments - they have the power to make you feel strongly. Watching the spring blossoms bud for a few short weeks represents 44

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

the close of the cool winter months and all of the trials and triumphs that happened within that time. It also reminds us that a new season is within our grasp - bringing the potential for new memories along with it. This year, I struggled to find the perfect snapshot of these beautiful blossoms. I didn’t have enough time to go out and enjoy them while they were here but fleeting moments are not supposed to be captured in a picture or even a video. In fact, it’s often impossible to do so. No matter how much you wish for a moment to slow down or even stop all together, it will not. Moments pass. The clock ticks on. What then becomes important is what you can control. Who will you share life’s moments with? What will you be doing in those moments? If you are experiencing fleeting moments like this in your life – you know you are doing something right. The idea of something fleeting is that it leaves too quickly – that you cannot get enough. Time passes quicker than most of us would like but if it is spent purposefully with the

Daegu Community - Fleeting Spring Blossoms

http://daegucompass.com

ones that you love – it doesn’t get much better. Like moths to a flame, the cherry blossoms attract couples on a romantic stroll and photographers looking for the perfect shot. Even those who have seen the trees bloom year after year stop to admire. Each visitor is looking for something when they come to admire the blossoms. Most of us are looking to experience something that makes us feel. We want to feel bliss, overwhelming happiness. We are looking to discover, build and maintain relationships with people to share life’s moments with. While we cannot stop time we can experience it purposefully. If for some reason, you haven’t been living a life with blissful moments - you are in luck. The thing about spring is that it’s the season of new life - bringing with it the potential to rearrange your life to let more of these blissful moments in.

Strength In Each Other A Closer Look Into The LGBT Community Interview by Scott McLaughlin / Written by Chris Powell / Photos by Gay구

GAY구 is an expat led LGBT group that aims to build a strong gay community in Daegu. While it may feel necessary to be private about one's sexuality in Daegu, GAY구 wants to create a more visible gay social scene. They encourage people to "get off the apps and really join forces to make a difference in Colorful Daegu." The group has five key aims: to build a strong LGBT community in Daegu, to support local gay establishments, to host gay events, to strengthen gay pride, and to paint a truly colorful Daegu. By attending their events, you will have access to LGBT news and upcoming events in Daegu as well as the rest of Korea. It also provides a chance to lend your support to their cause. With more support, GAY구 can further develop and promote the current gay community here and facilitate its growth by hosting a variety of different events. Pleasure Parties "Pleasure Parties" are LGBT nights organized by GAY구 and hosted across a variety of different venues. To date, there have been nine fantastic pleasure parties and they are proudly, they are becoming more and more frequent. Most parties have a theme. The most recent event was Pleasure Party 9 "Black Attire" hosted at Club Mushroom B1 (formerly club JEEEP. As with all pleasure parties, it was a huge success full of contests, prizes, great diverse sets of music and most importantly, fun. - GAY구 team The Compass sits down with some expats that identify themselves as LGBT to understand more about the challenges they face in Daegu and Korea. How has GAY구 helped inform and broaden the perspective of the gay community to local Daegu residents? We think that mainly, it just makes the gay community visible. In a country where it is so hidden and covered, we feel it is important that LGBT people come with a face and a personality. It makes it less mysterious to those who don't know much about a gay, lesbian bisexual or transgendered individual. At that point they can begin to realize we are just humans like everyone else, and we can begin to be seen with compassion. What challenges or resistance has their been to the Pleasure Parties or to the Gay Pride walks that have taken place in the past? As for pleasure parties, the only major challenges we face come with finding a venue. We've had instances where the venue was worried about the gay foreigners making the Korean foreigners feel uncomfortable and we've had instances where

46

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

the venue was afraid that the gay clientele would make the regular straight clientele feel uncomfortable, but these were very minor setbacks in the party planning. With any organization there will be some setbacks and we feel very lucky to have had things go as smoothly as they have been. In regards to the most recent pride walk, there was much controversy surrounding the Seoul Queer Festival which occurred just prior to our own. Because of this, Daegu was very prepared for any trouble that might arise. There were a plethora of police to protect all parties involved including the protestors and participants. The amazing thing we found about this experience was that a very large group of the Seoul LGBT community came down to support our modest number. Everything went off without a hitch. It was peaceful, informative and celebratory. The veterans of GAY구 all felt a very new sense of pride after the event had concluded. How has working in Daegu been, does it conflict with your jobs at all? First, it has to be said that we carry ourselves in a very professional matter and do not invite our personal lives to interfere with our work place. In all truth, being an LGBT person has nothing to do with any job that is at hand. However, there was one incident where one of our Team members was approached about a gay rumor that the employer felt the need to address. In the end, all was resolved and that individual has been succeeding very well at the same place of employment. What about the Korean gay community? What struggles do you see them go through and how has GAY구 helped them? It has become a bit challenging as we are currently ex-pat run. We have tried hard to include members of the local community, but for one reason or another, getting the locals involved has not been successful. We actually quite regret this because we are here to help the local community, and it would best if we had local involvement in the planning of events. We are extremely open to having anyone becoming a part of our team. We believe in not being exclusive. When we make our regular visits to local gay bars in Daegu, we have noticed that they have become more receptive to our group with each visit. There is a very large local Korean LGBT attendance at our events. Although most remain skeptical, we see an increasing number due to the appreciativeness of the ones who actually do attend. We must say, it is very rewarding to receive gratitude from those Koreans who attend. We often hear extremely positive feedback from those who attend as well as those who don't attend. They understand the need for these parties. The gossip is working in our favor.

Daegu Community - Strength In Each Other

What steps or events need to take place in order for an absolutely normal aspect of human life be accepted in Korea? Time and patience. Absolute acceptance is rare in any part of the world. This country has only been on the international scene for 60 years. There have been vast improvements in the 5 years that our group has been created. We understand what it takes to become fully accepted into a closed society and we are very happy to see that Korean society has opened up so quickly. Of course there is a long way to go, but we hope that with our efforts we can move that along a bit faster.

Any last words or thoughts you want to contribute? We just hope that everyone will take an interest and participate in our upcoming events! The next event will be Pleasure Party 10: "What Attire" May 30, 2015. For more information please message us atgaygu123@gmail.com. P.S, if you see a gay, send them our way.

What are some future events people can come to in order to support GAY꾏? We are working on a daytime party, as well as some social gatherings that don't include dancing and music such as rooftop BBQs , picnics in Duryu park, bowling, etc. We know that we can throw a great night party, and we have succeeding in doing so. Now, we want to branch out and see how GAY꾏 can paint a more colorful daegu in the daylight hours. What do you think is the most challenging aspect to being homosexual in Korea compared to your home country? Mainly the fact that in most of our home countries, there are many places for social gatherings that are well established for the gay community. There is also a freedom that comes with knowing that in our respective countries the struggle of being gay is becoming a recent past, whereas in Korea, the struggle is now.

Madhouse: The Musical Collaboration Breeds Insanity Written by Jamie Kistler / Photos by Laura Rhoades

What do you get when you combine the ridiculous originality of the Daegu Theatre Troupe with the musical madness of OperaSpoonful? A ticket to the Madhouse! Madhouse: The Musicalis an original musical comedy featuring parodied versions of musical theatre and pop hits, from Broadway to The Beatles. The upcoming production, a creative collaboration between two of Daegu’s most beloved bands of thespians, is sure to entertain and offend most everyone. If you’ve already experienced the irreverent hilarity of a DTT 24-hour show, you know what you’re in for. If not, here’s a brief synopsis of the show: Doctor Moss has developed a new psychiatric drug that causes people to express their innermost feelings, with only one side effect…it makes them sing! Now, she is testing her new wonder-drug "Sopranozol" on a handful of patients: Johnny (who initially is afflicted by a terrible stutter, but develops new ailments every day), Carl (an internet porn addict and self-described "horny douchebag"), Patty (a nymphomaniac with a thing for phallic-shaped fruit), Lisa (a mute, maybe…she won’t say), Mr. Parsons (a man-child 48

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

obsessed with his boots), and Jesus (he’s back, and nobody believes him). Doctor Moss observes the effects of Sopranozol with the help of her assistant Dr. Dreyfuss, who administers (blasts) the drug directly into the patients' faces with a spray bottle, while her esteemed colleagues (the audience) look on in amazement/horror.As you can imagine, it doesn’t take long for things to get out of control with this much crazy in one room, and Dr. Moss struggles desperately to maintain order. The production process of Madhouse has been something new for the actors. Working with an original script, they decided to make rehearsals an intensely collaborative and playful process, developing scenes through theatre games and exercises. Actor, Josh Rhoades says, “The most interesting part about doing an original musical has been the freedom to shape my character, not just around my own vision, but through suggestions from all of my castmates. We all are working hard to create the entire show together.” Using primarily folding chairs and their bodies to tell the story, the performers have developed a simple and pure theatrical experience that showcases the creative talents of our local

actors, writers, designers, and directors, without many bells and whistles. However, with brilliant expat artists like we have in Daegu and our highly imaginative local audiences, Madhouse is sure to be a musical comedy spectacular. Building A Better Environment A Year For Improvements At The Daegu International School Written by Elaine Kim / Photos submitted by Elaine Kim

A month ago on Jet Stream, a whimsical short film titled “DIS Improvement Story Episode One” debuted, and with it a 50” LED TV. A “giant television-slash-computer-slash-Smart Board that we can take outside and use anytime,” Mr. Odom termed it after his lanky figure meandered around the school campus, wondering what was still missing from the campus. The next few episodes revealed an array of refurbishments including lengthy new gym curtains (for a cinematic experience during assemblies), the third floor staircase leading directly to the second floor, and the new playground. The fifth episode, which generated much commotion during the assembly for featuring the vegetarian math teacher Mrs. Cross licking leftover chicken bones, high school English teacher Mr. Hinkle shaving his bald head, and Ms. Scala of the Physics/AP Economics department waltzing around her classroom with a skeleton model, revealed that Mrs. Neill,

50

DAEGU COMPASS 2015.MAY

the curriculum coordinator, will be relocated to a third floor classroom. Mr. Odom, the headmaster, explained the process for selecting improvements. When faculty, students, or parents give suggestions, he said, “We take all of the suggestions and winnow them down to manageable projects…the decision ultimately lies with me and the Board of Directors.” “First we consider the practicality of an improvement, does it really make sense to do this thing, [and] are there other ways to do it? Then we look at cost, how many students benefit, how the school benefits, and weigh those factors,” he said. The chief constituent in these decisions is, according to Mr. Odom, “equality…[for] students from kindergarten to 12th grade.” After the funds were expended on the middle school and high school lab and music department, it was only fair to build a new playground for elementary school students. “Part of living in a society is supporting the services that

Daegu Community - Building A Better Environment

http://daegucompass.com

benefit not just yourself, but other members of the society as well,” Mr. Odom added. Students Benz Han (G11) and Marvin Kweon (G10) reviewed the renewed school environment with much enthusiasm, especially with the additional gym curtains. “I think the gym looks way bigger with the curtains,” Benz remarked. “Whenever I have P.E. classes, it is way more comfortable because the ball doesn’t really leave the boundaries,” Marvin said. Unfortunately, the students weren’t fond of the new staircase, citing its “low quality” as their reason. “The stairs… aren’t useless, but it smells, it makes noises, and it feels like I’m going to fall off.”

For Benz, a prime would-be repair of interest was the basketball court. “Change the hoops,” he tersely remarked. For Marvin, however, a soft-core approach would be more upto-par: “Starting with academics…I wish we had a lot more course choices. But it’s a small school. That’s the main problem.” Another wish was to establish a teacher grading system, like RateMyProfessors.com, a review site of college instructors that contains over 1 million ratings. “We could then report information about teachers, new or old,” Benz said. Meanwhile, several more productions of DIS Improvement Story are confirmed to be under way.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. We hope you have an awesome time and try to enjoy and see as much of the market as possible. We would like to thank Dyren J. Billups-Adam for his photos of the different areas. Thanks bud!

Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 1PM~1AM • 053-252-1481 • 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Daehan News / Two Ppul Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. <Daeghan News> 12PM~12AM • 053-423-3990 • 6, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu <Two Ppul> 5PM~1AM • 053-422-1033 • 7-15, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Pic&iq VIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reservation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 6PM~11PM • 053-253-9782 • 2232-15, Dalgubeol-daero, Jung-gu, Daegu closed on Sundays

Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
