Jazz in Daegu The 2016 Spring Festival Season has Begun!

The 2016 JAZZ IN DAEGU festival will be held from May 7th to 8th at the Smiling Arts Center. It is organized by the Smiling Arts Center of Dalseo Culture Foundation, and sponsored by Yamaha Korea, the Embassy of Spain in Korea, Audio Guy, and the Daegu Convention & Visitors Bureau. (재)달서문화재단 웃는얼굴아트센터가 주최하고 야마하 코리아, 주한스페인대사관, 오디오 가이, 대구컨벤션관광뷰로 등이 후원 하는 2016 페스티벌 ‘재즈 인 대구’가 5월 7일~8일 2일간 웃는얼 굴아트센터 청룡홀에서 개최된다.

‘JAZZ IN DAEGU’ is a road show of ‘JAZZ IN SEOUL’, which is the primary jazz marketplace in Asia, and is currently held at the Seoul Audio Guy Studio and Sejong Center. The Jazz in Daegu festival invited Korean and international artists to present high-class jazz and world music to Daegu citizens and to showcase the viability of Daegu to host an international cultural event ‘재즈 인 대구’는 서울 오디오 가이 스튜디오와 세종문화회관에 서 개최되는 아시아 유일의 재즈 중심 마켓인 재즈 인 서울의 대 구 지역 로드쇼로 진행되며 지역 및 해외 우수 아티스트를 초청

하여 지역민들에게 수준 높은 재즈 및 월드뮤직을 선보이는 동시 에 지역의 국제문화행사 개최의 자생력을 배양하고자 기획된 페 스티벌이다.

On the first day of the festival, May 7th, the Nam Kyung Yoon Trio (Korea) kicks off the festival. Next, Gileno Santana & Tuniko Goulart will show the soul of Brazil through the sound of guitar and trumpet. Also, SUMRRA (Spain) and TRAD.ATTACK (Estonia) will be the final two performers. On May 8th, Hong Jeong Su Jazz Project will open the show. TWO SIBERIANS (Russia) will play rough instrumental sounds with violin and a guitar, and PLINT (Mozambique) will present a dynamic baseline and unique harmonic sound. Invited artists are popular in their local music scene and the festival incorporates various world music, based on jazz, to satisfy the individual tastes of the audience. Lee Byeong-bae, the chief of Dalseo Culture Foundation and festival organizer, said “This is the very first music festival held in the Smiling Arts Center. Daegu Art Museum Enhancing Visitors’ Experience with New English Art App

When I entered the Daegu Art Museum I wasn’t sure where to begin. I didn’t know much about modern art, much less Korean art, but the app allowed me to look through the exhibitions with ease. With the help of the museum staff, I used a QR reader to scan over a paper slip. This automatically downloaded the Daegu Art Museum app to my iPhone 6. Whenever I saw a QR code next to a piece, I whipped out my phone and scanned it with the app. The descriptions were thoughtprovoking and detailed, but clear enough for all audiences. The audio descriptions helped me to journey through the museum handsfree, concentrating solely on the work. The app was simple, but effective. And I can still use it to revisit the art piece descriptions I would have otherwise forgotten. This is a must for experienced art enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Understanding art in a foreign country may seem like a daunting task, but the Daegu Art Museum has found a way to help visitors navigate through their collections—minus the language barrier. With the Daegu Art Museum (대구미술관) app, visitors can scan a QR code located near selected pieces and view a description of the artwork on their phone. “It is apart of our larger initiative to attract a large audience,” says Museum public relation specialist Hyunju Moon. “We don’t want the language barrier to hold anyone back from exploring the museum and understanding the importance of each piece. This gives Englishspeaking visitors an opportunity to explore the cultural significance of the work to its fullest extent.”

Although the app launched in 2013, the new English language feature was added just over a year ago. “We worked with a translation company that specializes in the arts,” says the app developer. “The whole process took about three months to complete. It’s a working progress that should assist many people.” About 20 percent of the museum’s collection has a QR code which are placed right by the art piece’s panel. Museum goers can download the app with QR code card at the front desk, scan the QR codes, and an automated description of the art pieces will pop up on the smartphone. In addition to the written art summaries, visitors can listen to an audio guide through the app in English while perusing through the galleries.

Moon notes the Daegu Art Museum gets about 10,000 foreign visitors a year, but the museum expects the app to attract an even larger audience. “In the short time people come here, we hope they are able to use this app when they visit,” says Moon. “If people learn about Korean artists and are touched by their work, then we have achieved our goal.” The Daegu Art Museum app is free and available for both Android and iOS users. “Visitors should bring their headphones for their phone,” says Moon, “but if you forget, you can borrow a pair with a photo ID at the front desk. They are free.”

iOS 1) Step 1. Download the app. iOS: Search for “대구미술관.” Android: Search for “Daegu Art Museum”. Then download the app “대구미술관”. Or, both users can use QR codes. You also can get a QR code card at the ticket box.

2) Step 2. Open the app and click the third tab “QR코드,” where you’ll find a QR code scanner.

3) Step 3. Place the square in the middle of screen on a QR code next to an art piece. Then it will automatically move to an explanation page of the art piece.

For those of you who are seasoned residents of Daegu, you are more than accustomed to the strong spirit of community we have here, and the care, love, and support we give to local and international causes covering a wide range of current topics. For those of you who are new to Daegu – welcome! We are delighted to have you, and we look forward to seeing you getting involved in the multitude of activities and volunteer opportunities that the ‘Gu has to offer. 대구에 오래 살았던 분들께 말씀 드린다. 여러분은 우리가 대구 에서 갖고 있는 커뮤니티의 강한 정신에 익숙함 그 이상을 느낄

것이다. 또한 현재 주목받는 다양한 주제를 포함하는 지역 및 세 계적인 이슈에 보내는 보살핌, 사랑, 지지에도 동일한 감정을 느 낄 수 있을 것이다. 대구에 새로 오신 분들, 환영한다! 대구에 여

I’m going to introduce you to just one of the organisations that has been running here for the last several years: Love146. Love 146 is an international human rights organization working to end child trafficking and exploitation through survivor care and prevention. Love146 is helping grow the movement to end child trafficking by providing effective, thoughtful solutions. We aim to educate, as well raise funds to further the work that the organisation currently does throughout the world. (Check out the website at www.love146.org)

여기에서는 지난 몇 년 동안 대구에서 운영되어 온 여러 단체 중

하나를 소개하고자 한다. 바로 Love146이다. Love146은 생존자 케어와 예방활동을 통해 아동 인신매매 및 착취를 종식시키고자 하는 국제적인 인권 단체이다. 그리고 효과적이고 사려깊은 해결

책을 제공함으로 아동 인신매매를 없애고자 하는 움직임이 성장 할 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 우리는 조직이 현재 전세계에서 하고 있 는 일을 더 발전시켜 나가기 위해 기금을 모금하는 것뿐만이 아

니라 교육활동도 목표로 하고 있다.(www.love146.org에서 더 많은 내용을 확인할 수 있다.)

Love146 is an international organisation, and our Task Force in Daegu is a small cog in a much bigger wheel. Our Task Force was founded in 2012, and we are currently the only satellite group running in Korea. Each year, we pledge to raise a minimum of $1000 to send to the organisation, so that they may continue their work to abolish child trafficking and exploitation through rehabilitation, training, and grassroots empowerment groups. Education is a fundamental factor in the work that Love146 does. For that reason, the Daegu Taskforce meets about once a month to not only arrange events and fundraisers, but to learn, educate, discuss and debate the huge number of issues that surround the child trafficking industry. Love146 has a very structured and comprehensive modular program that we follow during our meetings - but we also bring our own research, knowledge and experiences to the table. 교육활동은 Love146에서 진행하고 있는 일 중에 기본적인 요소 이다. 그 때문에 대구 태스크포스팀은 한 달에 한 번 정도 모임을

가진다. 행사와 기금모금을 위해서만이 아니라 아동 인신매매 산

위해서이다. Love146은 모임 동안 따라 할 수 있는 구성이 매우

잘 짜여진 종합적 모듈식 프로그램을 보유하고 있다. 하지만 우 리만의 조사내용과 지식 및 경험 역시 모임에 준비해 온다.

What events have we been running over the years? There are too many to mention individually, we’ve been pretty busy! We have some amazing volunteers (many of whom have sadly moved on to pastures new, and that’s where you can help, but I’ll come to that later.) Our volunteers have attended both foreigner and local run festivals and events to further raise awareness of the organisation; they have tirelessly worked to organise delicious and successful bake sales; we have organised a DaeguSantacon with carols galore, and probably the most fun and spectacular event – the “Hunt for Freedom” Photo Scavenger Hunt, which has run every year since 2012. The Scavenger Hunt has become quite the Daegu institution, with teams of 4-6 people running themselves ragged across the city taking pictures while performing some rather curious tasks, in order to be the owners of the glorious title of “Winners of the Hunt for Freedom!” We collaborate with a number of local Daegu businesses to be able to offer some pretty great prizes. The Hunt for Freedom will be running again this year on Saturday, June 18th. -continued on p18-

우리가 몇 년 간 해온 행사에는 어떤 것이 있을까? 각각 따로 이

야기하기에는 너무 많은 일들이 있었고, 계속해서 꽤나 바빴다! 몇몇 훌륭한 자원봉사자 분들도 계셨다(안타깝게도 많은 분들이 새로운 생활을 위해 떠났고 이 부분에 대해 여러분이 도움을 줄

수 있다. 나중에 언급하도록 하겠다.) 자원봉사자들은 조직에 대 해서 더 널리 알릴 수 있도록 외국인과 지역민들이 운영하는 축

제 및 이벤트 모두에 참여했다. 그 분들은 지칠 줄도 모르고 성공 적인 빵 판매 이벤트를 개최하기 위해 일을 했다. 우리는 캐롤을

부르며 돌아다니는 대구산타콘과 2012년부터 매년 개최한 가장

재미있고 스펙터클한 이벤트였던 “Hunt for Freedom” 포토 스

캐빈저 헌트를 열었다. 스캐빈저 헌트 이벤트는 대구에서 꽤 잘 알려져 있다. “Hunt for Freedom의 우승자!”라는 영광스러운 타이틀의 주인이 되기 위해서 4-6명이서 만든 팀들이 별난 미션

들을 수행하는 동시에 사진을 찍으며 도시를 휘저어 놓았다. 우 리는 꽤 큰 상품을 제공하기 위해서 몇몇 대구 지역 내의 업체들 과 협력하기도 한다. Hunt for Freedom은 올해 6월 18일 토요 일에 다시 열릴 것이다.

So, here is where you come in! The current Daegu Taskforce is quite new, as many of our original founding members have moved on and passed the gauntlet over to us. We are a group of 6 core Taskforce members who work together on a full time basis. In order to keep all of our events running, and to keep raising awareness for this excellent cause, WE WANT YOU! We are looking for both full time and part time members to join us in both the education and awareness aspect of the work Love146 does, and to help us with the organisation and execution of some pretty awesome events. For full time members, it does require some level of time commitment – you are asked to attend the monthly meetings and be pivotal in the organisation of major events. 그래서 Love146의 활동에 여러분이 참여할 수 있는 기회가 있

다! 원래의 설립 멤버들이 많이 떠나며 우리에게 권한을 넘겨주

I awaken to sun streaming through the south-facing window. The crepuscular rays illuminate gentle particles of suspended dust. Rubbing away the crusty buildup at my eyes, I wonder at my lack of headache. It was an all-night session downtown and now it’s early afternoon. I’ve slept through another Saturday morning. Large quantities of coffee are in order. It’s a good thing it’s the first Saturday of the month. 남향 창문 사이로 쏟아져 들어오는 햇빛에 잠을 깬다. 어스름한 빛은 부드럽게 떠다니는 먼지입자를 비춘다. 눈가의 눈곱을 떼내

I make my way on Daegu’s superb subway system to the place where all lines cross in the heart of the city, Banwoldang station. Exit 10, up the stairs, I walk into cellphone alley and hang a right. 20 meters along I make another right, and just a little ways past Etoh’s Drafthouse, I find what I’ve come for, ELMOs Study Cafe. I ascend the stairs to the third floor as the clock strikes 3PM. I’ve made it to another monthly gathering of English teachers. Hangover be damned. It’s time for coffee and KOTESOL!

Korea TESOL, 즉KOTESOL은 영어교육에 헌신하는 교육자들의

전문적인 모임이다. 1992년에 설립된 비영리 모임으로 한국에 의 한국인부터 전세계에서 온 원어민 교사까지 다양한 배경을 갖 고 있다. 첫 해를 맞이한 학원교사들부터 오래 일한 대학교 교수

들까지 KOTESOL은 모든 사람들에게 열려 있다. 또한 지식과 기

Now, it’s 5PM and the meeting’s over. I gained a variety of new knowledge, traded stories with like-minded teachers, and learned some new moves that I can bring into the classroom on Monday. Some attendees are on the way home, but they’ll be back again on the first Saturday of next month. - All I can keep thinking of is when I told my coteachers that I had ordered a phone SIM card and was waiting for it to be delivered - what I needed help with was connecting my internet - he wouldn’t stop talking about getting me a new phone and literally took me to the phone store, had them bring out a contract for a used iPhone 5 and a 2 year contract (when I had been telling him for 2 weeks that I didn’t need or want a new phone or contract) and I had to tell the clerk (who didn’t really speak English) that I had a SIM card coming that afternoon and I didn’t need a contract and he told my coteacher that I had ordered a phone plan from somewhere else.

- This was a very frustrating situation for one of my friends. Coteachers will often help you obtain a phone, set up your internet for your apartment, get a bank account, etc. However, some coteachers may not listen to you and try to push you in to what they think is best / what you need. Be prepared to hold firm and not cave in. Also, keep in mind that your coteachers are not your personal secretaries – they have lives too! - My vacation, at the end of my contract; they told me what days my vacation were and I asked for permission to buy my tickets and they said yes. I bought them and then the next week, and up until I left for vacation, they tried to get me to cancel my international, (11 hour) very expensive flight, so that I could teach more classes, and didn’t understand why I wouldn’t want to pay to cancel not only my flight but also my parents’ flights (because I was meeting them in Hawaii) and it would have cost thousands of dollars. They offered me 1 more day of vacation and didn’t understand why I wouldn’t give up thousands of dollars and the chance to go to Hawaii for that 1 extra day. - 제 휴가이야기에요. 계약 종료에 거의 가까울 때쯤이었죠. 학교 에서 제 휴가가 언제인지 이야기해 줬고 저는 비행기 티켓을 사

You should always get approval for vacation days in writing, but even then, they may try to change the dates. This has happened to a few teachers I know and can be very challenging to work through. The only advice I have is to get your approvals in writing before you buy tickets and stick to your guns!

- Another time I had a student that refused to do anything in my class. My coteacher told me to just ignore him for the entire year and let him sleep in my class. He often let the student wander the halls during my class just to avoid it. This was when the student was in 1st grade (middle school). We had many conversations about this. I worked really hard trying to get the student to work in my class. I finally cracked him by 3rd grade, and he was actually able to do the majority of the work. Too bad that teacher wasn’t there for me to show him not to give up on students.

- 다른 경우는 제 수업에서 아무 것도 안 하겠다는 학생이 있 었을 때의 일이에요. 동료선생님은 그 학생을 1년 내내 무시 하고 제 수업시간 동안 자게 내버려두라고 했죠. 그 분은 종

종 학생들이 제 수업시간 동안 복도를 돌아다니는 것도 내 버려뒀어요. 트러블을 피하려고요. 이건 학생들이 중1일 때 의 일이었고 우리는 이에 대해 많은 대화를 나눴습니다. 저 는 제 수업에 학생들이 참여하도록 정말 열심히 노력했어

요. 마침내 그 학생이 3학년이 되었을 때쯤 그 견고한 성을 무너뜨렸고 그 학생은 수업의 대부분을 해낼 수 있었어요.

그 때는 그 선생님이 안 계셔서 제가 학생들을 포기하지 않 는다는 것을 보여주지 못 해서 무척이나 아쉬웠어요.

This is an all-too-common occurrence at schools. From outward appearances, it really does seem that some teachers just give up on students. Don’t let this get you down and don’t follow their lead. Stick with it, stay positive, and keep trying – you may make more of an impact than you know. I had a student who hated English class and was forced (by his mom) to take one of my after school classes. He didn’t say a word for the first few weeks, but I stayed positive and gave him lots of support and praise any time he participated. By the end of the semester he often raised his hand to answer questions and no longer brought a scowl to class with him. Those little moments make all the difference. 이 역시 학교에서 일어나는 아주 흔한 일입니다. 바깥에서

Okay, so now you know just how much money you can earn teaching English in South Korea. Is your head spinning?! Don’t worry... we are about to share with you some of the tips and tricks that helped us save more than $22,000 in one year. You can adapt them to work for you, and start watching your savings accrue. But before we start talking budgets, I want to emphasize that saving money should never mean sacrificing your happiness. Being away from family and friends can take a toll, and it’s important to focus on the things that bring you joy. Don’t feel guilty for little splurges here and there – we certainly had our fair share. Furthermore, be sure to experience life abroad to its fullest. Don’t let your budget hold you back when it comes to trying new things. We want to make it known that while we did save a lot of money, we never felt like we missed out on any experiences because of money. We had nights out with friends, traveled a ton within Korea and Asia, ate amazing food, and enjoyed the occasional splurges like new clothes or fancy coffees. We managed to save even more than we expected. And guess what? You can too! Whether you’re saving for future travels, to pay off student loans, to build up a “nest” for the future, or all of the above (like us!), the tips below can help you start reaching your financial goals. 1. Come with a plan

Do your research before you arrive in Korea. Get an idea of your income and necessary expenses, and come up with a realistic goal of how much you want to save. Feel free to use this post as a guide for your year. I bet if you really try, you can save $22,000 too! Heck, challenge yourself to save even more than we did! Once you have an idea of how much you want to leave Korea with, come up with a monthly spending plan.How much “fun money” can you spend each paycheck in order to meet your

goal? Try your best to “cut yourself off” after you’ve spend your monthly allowance. But as I mentioned earlier, don’t let your budget compromise your happiness. If you go over this month, that’s fine! Just try to spend even less next month. Soon, it’ll all even out. Tip #1: Keep in mind that many of the payments you’ll receive (severance, pension, return flight allowance) won’t come until the end of the year. For this reason, the first few months can be a bit harder to save money, but don’t let that discourage you. Tip #2: When planning your budget, remember to include any bills (student loans, etc.) that you have at home.

2. Prioritize your spending

Answer this question: What is really important to you? Partying? Seeing the latest blockbusters in the theater? Having a cute apartment? Chose 1 or 2 of the things that are most important to you and make them your top spending priorities. If you’re a big foodie, save up and splurge on a nice meal each week. If you follow the latest fashion trends, set aside your money for a fall shopping spree. Our main priority was travel, so we saved money specifically for this purpose. While living overseas, we visited the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, and of course all around Korea! Although travel was our main priority, we spent money in other ways too. We had nights out on the town with friends, ate lots of amazing food, and truly didn’t ever feel like we missed out on anything because of money. The trick for us was moderation. We went out to the bars, but not every weekend night. We ate out sometimes, but usually cooked meals ourselves. Once you know your top spending priorities, the next step is to figure out what you can bear to be without. For us, it was shopping. In the entire year, we spent less than $300 on new clothes between the two of us. And all the clothes we did buy were more or less necessity (We didn’t bring nearly enough winter clothes... eek! Wish we would have had a packing list to consult before

moving!). And we walked past the isles of cute knick-knacks at the stores, so unlike many of our friends’ apartments, our place wasn’t very homey. That just wasn’t very important to us. If you’re planning on staying in Korea for longer than a year, making your apartment feel like home may be a higher priority than it was for us. Maybe you don’t care as much about traveling. Or perhaps you don’t frequent the bars (or wine isle). Your budget will look much different than ours. And that’s okay. Everyone’s priorities are different. Find yours.

3. Avoid temptation

Although the cost of living in South Korea is relatively cheap, spending money is easier than you think. With coffee shops on every corner selling fancy iced-mochachino-frappes (or whatever you call ‘em) for $6 USD, and makeup stores displaying every shade of nail polish known to man, temptation is all around in Korea. Literally everywhere you look. Temptation can even be found in the comfort of your own home. Online shopping is incredibly simple, and shipping is scary fast. With a few clicks of your mouse, you can easily spend a quarter of your paycheck and your bounty will arrive in 2 days time. Set limits for yourself. It’s not realistic to say you’ll never ever buy a coffee drink in Korea, but limit yourself to 1 a week, or 2 a month. That way you won’t feel like you’re missing out. Same goes for clothing, makeup, electronics, PC Rooms – whatever your poison may be. Ours was bingsu... And we only allowed ourselves one per month. Well, moooost of the time. When mango season rolled around, we were in for some trouble... Tip: Set aside a certain amount of money you’re okay spending on things that aren’t necessities. When that money is gone each month, cut yourself off. And if you know that you’re easily persuaded, avoid temptation altogether. Don’t browse the clothing in the subway stations. Stay away from coffee shops unless you’re meeting a friend. Don’t bookmark GMarket on your computer. But really, it’s dangerous... especially during desk-warming time.

4. Learn how to cook

This is imperative for saving money in Korea. Everywhere you go, you’ll be surrounded by delicious (and some not so delicious) smells, luring you in. Restaurants are not hard to find, and it can be tempting to eat out several times a week. But beware: it adds up quickly! Fight the urge and cook most dinners yourself. Our advice is to find a local grocery store with good prices. Shop a few near your apartment to compare prices, and be loyal to the one with the best deals. You’ll likely have to shop at a big mart (Home Plus, e-Mart, or Lotte Mart) for some of your groceries and other necessities (ie. wine!). But try to avoid these big stores when it comes to produce, as the prices are typically much higher than the local marts. Shop the fruits and veggies that are in season. Korea has a big focus on locally grown produce, and typically you’ll only find what’s

in season at the smaller marts. Things that are out of season can usually only be found at the big guys (ie. Home Plus, e-Mart, Lotte Mart) since they must be imported, and will cost you much more. Splurge every now and then on an avocado, but since they aren’t grown in Korea and are quite expensive, it’s best to leave them out of your typical grocery list (if you can resist!). To give you an idea of how much you’ll be spending: We averaged 87,500 won (about $78 USD) per week on groceries for 2 people. That makes it 43,750 won per person (about $39 USD) on groceries each week. We typically cooked our own meals at least 5-6 nights a week (as well as all of our breakfasts). And there were many weeks that we didn’t go out to eat at all. Tip: We usually bought all of our produce on Sunday and cooked a big meal to last the rest of the week. That way we didn’t have to cook dinner after work, so we weren’t as tempted to eat out. We typically limited ourselves to eating out only on the weekends (except for special occasions).

5. Work with what you’ve got

Once you arrive in Korea you will get a rent-free apartment. The first thing you’ll want to do is fill it with stuff.Resist the urge to decorate and remind yourself that this is a temporary home. The previous teacher will most likely have left enough for you to get by for the first few weeks or months. If someone gives you a free set of dishes, use them! Sure, they’re mismatched, but are you really planning on having regular dinner parties in your 8-by-8 apartment? And even if you do, they probably won’t be the kind that require china with matching patterns. Our blender needed a knife to be stuck into it to turn on, and our duvet was a hue very similar to PeptoBismol. Not things that we would have chosen at home, but when we knew we’d be ditching it in a year, we made an effort to make it work. Sure, you can sell some of your bigger items when you leave Korea, but you likely won’t get much money back. Don’t purchase big items on the assumption that you’ll get lots of money for them at the end of your contract. Note: Going back to priorities (#2)... If Korea will be home for a long time and having a cozy apartment is priority numerouno, ignore this tip altogether. Tip: Reach out to Facebook groups (most larger cities have a group where people post things that are for sale). Many times, people sell things when they leave, and are willing to part with them for really low prices. And Daiso, Korea’s answer to the dollar store, will have everything you could possibly want for your new apartment at the best deals around!

6. Have fun for free (or almost free)

While there’s a lot you can spend your money on in Korea, there’s a ton to do for free as well. Here’s a few of our favorite affordable activities: -Camping in Korea is not like it is in North America, or really and other part of the world for that matter. You won’t have your own site, surrounded by trees and equipped with a fire grate.

Nope, you’ll just plop down your tent in the middle of an open space... which means it’s free! Bring your own food, beers and some folding chairs, and you’re in for a good time! Tip: Find camping supplies on sale at the big marts in the fall. We got a 2-person tent for under $10 USD. -Hiking is perhaps even more popular than camping, and is many Koreans’ favorite pastime. You’ll find trails, big and small, around every corner in this country. Seriously. We found a rarely occupied path just a few blocks from our apartment that we hiked just about every week in the fall and spring. Find your own “secret hiking spot” and pack a picnic of kimbap (usually around $3 USD for a roll) for an inexpensive afternoon. For an extra reward, bring a hammock and a bottle of wine (find cheap bottles at Home Plus!) to be opened at the top!

7. Become tax exempt

-It seems that there are festivals for just about everything in the ROK – from ice fishing to cherry blossoms, you’ll find celebrations that take place during every season. Many festivals are free to enter and are a great way to experience Korean culture on a budget. Check out the calendar of upcoming festivals on the Korean Tourism website. One of our favorite festivals in South Korea was the Andong Mask Dance which takes place in September. -If you like staying active, join a sports league. There are groups of foreigners and/or Koreans in just about all of the larger cities that gather weekly for pick-up games of Ultimate frisbee, soccer, and even Gaelic football! Some groups just meet up for fun and there’s no cost to join, while the more competitive leagues require a fee to participate (though it’s usually much less than a gym membership). -Board Game cafes are a great way to spend the afternoon with friends for a small fee. The hardest part is choosing from the huge selection of games to play! -Be sure to attend a few sporting events while in Korea – they are quite the experience! Going to a baseball game is a great way to spend the day or evening and should only set you back $5-10 USD for the ticket (depending on where you sit). One of the best parts is that you’re allowed to bring your own food and drinks! You can either pack food from home or buy a box of fried chicken for an affordable 5,000 won from one of the many vendors outside of the stadium. Tip: Find out what sport your city is known for, and become a fan! We loved going to the professional volleyball games in our town.

8. Transfer money home only when necessary

Other money-saving tips:

-Travel to other cities where you have friends living. This way, you have your own “tour guide” who can show you the best spots, and you won’t have to pay for accommodation! -Have a couple beers at 711 before going to the bars where you’ll pay double. Yes, this really is a thing. -DVD bongs (private room to watch movies in) are plentiful and cheaper than the theaters. -Switch it up and have a potluck dinner with friends instead of eating out.

Teaching English in South Korea?

Here’s something that we didn’t know until a week before we boarded the plane to South Korea: Most countries do not require you to pay income tax on your earnings in Korea during your first 2 years of teaching English. Sorry Canadian and Irish friends, you aren’t eligible for this! BUT in order to be exempt, you must file the correct paperwork before you arrive in Korea. Save yourself from being taxed twice, and read up on the procedures to follow. As US citizens, we were required to fill out form 8802 (instructions here) and pay a non-refundable fee of $85. (Totally worth it in the end because it’ll save you much more!) We had to send in everything to the IRS, and wait for them to process it. Do yourself a favor and look into it early! (We almost missed the deadline.)

If at all possible, make your money transfers home as infrequent as possible. Each time you wire money, you will be charged a fee from your bank in Korea as well as your bank at home. (We were charged roughly $20 each time we transferred money.) But the bigger issue is that you will have little control over the exchange rate if you transfer money frequently. If you transfer money each month without looking at the exchange rate, you are almost guaranteed to lose a few hundred (or more) dollars over the course of a year. We only transferred money home 6 times during our time in Korea. This allowed us to keep our eyes on the exchange rates and send money when the rate was best. But I know, I know... sometimes there are bills at home that need to be paid NOW. Definitely keep on top of those. But try to build up enough money in your home account that you can go a few paychecks without making a transfer. It may take a few months, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

9. Keep track of your spending (all of it!)

People are often surprised by all the little things that add up in the end. If you don’t keep track of the 10,000 won here and 4,000 there, a good chunk of your paycheck will magically disappear without you realizing it. And it will continue to add up, month after month. When we moved to South Korea, we started keeping track of all our spending and we saw something change. We noticed all the little things we bought for insignificant amounts of money actually added up to be quite expensive at the end of the month. Recording our spendings wasn’t easy at first, but once we got the hang of always asking for a receipt or making notes in our phones, it became a game. Each month, our goal was to spend less than the previous month. Sometimes we succeeded, and other times we failed. But each month, we knew exactly where our money was going. Now every time I buy something, I think about whether or not I really need it. Sure it’s only $15, but if I spend that much money a few times a month on things I don’t actually need, I’m looking at more than $500 at the end of the year. Gone.Disappeared.Never coming back.

Around every corner there’s a confounding curiosity, an exchange highlighted by a smile, or perhaps an ambiguous glance. It’s the one where Bill Murray’s character, Dr. Peter Venkman, knocks on the apartment door of Sigourney Weaver, playing a woman possessed by the devil. She opens the door, seething from her dark world. He meanders in, in his capacity as world class ghostbuster. Weaver immediately starts coming on to him in her devilish stupor. Now splayed across her huge bed, he pushes her away, proclaiming, “I have a rule never to have sex with a possessed woman.” Not easily deterred, Weaver continues trying to sexually overwhelm Murray. Suddenly, he sits up and says with a sly smile, “Well, maybe it’s more of a guideline.”

Seeking to understand the rules and guidelines of a place is part and parcel of living abroad. It’s the caffeine in the experience. How does a place work? What are the rules and laws? What is it they might drag me away for? Just as important, are the informal guidelines of the culture--the routine expectations one needs to know to navigate day-in and day-out without leaving too large of an expat wake that unsettles the natives’ boats.

One time in Korea, decades ago, I had missed all the signs, literally and figuratively. A friend and I were walking along a isolated, pebbly beach. We were lost in a world of our own. Suddenly there were screams, unrecognizable yelling, all of it in Korean. Soldiers came rushing toward us demanding that we come to a halt. We had been walking along a beach mined to protect that part of the coastline from North Korean infiltrators. We had been oblivious to all known rules and guidelines. Once, while walking on a busy downtown street, clothed in my youth and naivety, a new Korean buddy reached across our cultural divide to hold my hand. Chills of embarrassment ran up and down my spine. The idea of two guys holding hands in public pushed me way out of my comfort zone. The guideline here, of course, was that its quite normal for Korean friends of the same sex to hold hands.

Less dangerous, but still highly stimulating are the more mundane encounters of life in a foreign culture. What’s the guideline, for example, when during a rare quiet moment on a tour of the DPRK, your North Korean tour guide who, until that moment had been distant and staunchly pro-North Korean, turns speaking in a low voice, to talk about her personal life? Handling this awkward encounter was not mentioned in our pre-tour briefing.

These experiences, sometimes significant, but more typically innocuous, occur on a daily basis living in a foreign place. They become exotica, objects considered strange or interesting, because they are out of the ordinary, your ordinary. Having spent many years living and working in socalled foreign cultures, thoughts of returning home raise perplexing quandaries. Will life be as exciting, or even as interesting? Will I miss the familiar smells and sounds that have come to define my life in Korea? Will my life be less exotic, and does that even matter?

My Korean friend grabbed my hand. The guideline here. of course, is that it’s quite normal for friends of the same sex to hold hands.

Wedding Check-up for Men A New Medical Trend in Korea

In Korea, it has recently become the trend for a bride and a groom to exchange medical reports before their wedding. Lately, more and more men are visiting our clinic to get a medical examination before their wedding. For women, they can simply get a “prenatal test” medical check, but there isn’t an exact test for men, since there was little interest in the past. However, this trend has caused men visit urologists more than before.

The first test for a “Wedding Check-up for Men” is an STD test. STDs aren’t cured without medical treatment. Therefore, if you had sex before marriage you should get the test. If you don’t get treated and neglect your symptoms, STDs can cause prostatitis, epididymitis, and can even be transmitted to your spouse. In that case, she might get vaginitis or an infection in her womb or ovaries, and in the worst case, it can cause sterility. Syphilis and AIDS can be fatal, so you should get a blood test and treatment if the results are positive. Lately, there are technologically advanced tests, such as DNA tests, a test kit to get results immediately, and more. Through a test, doctors are able to find diseases and provide treatment without relapse.

The second test is sterility test to check if you have any fertility issues. The test for women is more difficult, but men can get results with a simple semen sample. One common cause of sterility is infertility. With excessive work, stress and other environmental factors, sperm gets weaker. Sperm should be thoroughly checked, including the numbers and activity, and also checked for any deformity and infection of the sperm.

Also, be sure to get a prostate test for prostatitis, which occurs in to 20~30% of young men. Only men have a prostate and it is an important part of the male body necessary to produce semen. If you have infection, it might cause a sexual function disorder. Moreover, it can damage your quality of life, so it is important to discover any issues and get treatment. A couple of my friends and I decided to spend the Chuseok Holiday (Korean Thanksgiving) abroad in Japan. Though we knew our plans were incredibly ambitious, and in an attempt to make the most of our short break, we decided to hit Kyoto for a couple days and Osaka for one. 친구들 몇명과 함께 추석을 일본에서 보내기로 했다. 우리의 계

획이 터무니 없이 욕심을 부린 것을 알고 있었지만 이 짧은 휴 가의 대부분을 멋지게 보내려는 노력과 더불어 이틀 정도는 교 토에서 하루는 오사카에서 지내기로 했다.

My friend Megan and I flew out of Incheon Airport at 10:45am and had a short-easy flight to Osaka Kansai, via Peach Airlines. After picking up our wifi egg (you should really get one of these if you go to Japan), we took the Kansai Express train directly to Kyoto (about 75min and $22 with the 1-Day Foreigner Kansai Area Pass). As soon as we arrived in Kyoto, we grabbed a taxi and head directly to the Air BnB. It was my first time booking with Air BnB and I was exceedingly happy with our choice!

내 친구 메건과 나는 오전 10시 45분에 인천공항을 떠나 피치 항공을 이용하여 짧고 힘들지 않은 비행을 끝내고 오사카 칸사

이 곡항에 도착했다. 와이파이 에그를 빌리고(만약 일본에 간다 면 하나 정도는 챙기기를 강추한다.) 칸사이 급행열차를 타고

바로 교토로 갔다.(외국인을 위한 칸사이 지역 패스 1일권이 22 달러 정도이고, 75분 정도 소요된다.) 교토에 도착하자마자 택

시를 타고 에어 비앤비 숙소로 향했다. 처음으로 에어 비앤비를 예약했는데 그 결정에 매우 만족했다.

At that point (due to lack of sleep) I was running on empty. Megan and I explored the Gion area a bit, found some much needed nourishment, and grabbed a few groceries. We got the lay of the land and made our plan of attack for the next day. 그 즈음에는(잠이 부족한 관계로) 체력이 방전되었다. 메건과 나는 기온 부근을 조금 돌아보았고 정말 필요한 영양분을 좀 보 충하고 장을 조금 봤다. 그리고는 마침내 누워서 다음날의 신나 게 돌아다닐 계획을 세웠다.

The following morning, we met our friend Nancy at Kyoto station bright and early. We sought out some famous Kyoto Ramen and weren’t disappointed! It was my first time having Ramen and although it wasn’t the standard Japanese-style, it was damned good! You know a restaurant is going to kick ass when it is packed with locals and has a line out the door at 9am! 다음날 아침, 일찍 교토역에서 친구인 낸시를 만났다. 우리

는 유명한 교토라멘집을 찾아냈고 그 맛은 실망스럽지 않았 다! 라멘은 처음 먹어보았는데 정통 일식은 아니었음에도

불구하고 정말 맛있었다! 식당이 지역사람들로 꽉 차 있고

아침 9시에 줄이 늘어서 있으면 그 식당은 정말 맛집이라는 것을 알 수 있다.

Fushimi Inari Shrine - we took a ridiculously long walk from the Ramen place to the shrine and it was PACKED! Although it was absolutely gorgeous, it was super-difficult to get any decent pictures due to the crowds (and this was on a Sunday). We only stayed for an hour, since we had a pretty packed schedule, but it was beautiful! The next time I visit Kyoto and the shrine, I will arrive as soon as it opens (preferably on a weekday) and spend 2-3 hours exploring the grounds. 후시미 이나리 신사 - 우리는 라멘가게에서 신사까지 말도 안 되게 오래 걸었고 도착해서 보니 신사는 사람들로 완전히 꽉 차 있었다! 믿기 어려울 정도로 아름답기는 했지만 사람들 때문에

아름다운 곳이었다. 다음에 교토와 이 신사에 온다면 (되도록이 면 주중에) 문을 열자마자 와서 2-3시간 정도는 돌아볼 것이다.

Sanjusangendo Temple - Considering it was mid-day already, we decided to take the train/subway to this temple. I’m very glad we took the time to stop here as it was the most awe-inspiring sight I witnessed that weekend. The temple is famous for displaying the 1001 Kannon (the goddess of mercy). Though we couldn’t take any pictures inside, I know the mental images will stay with me for a very long time. It was a truly amazing sight to behold! 산쥬산겐도- 벌써 한 낮이라는 것을 고려해서, 기차나 지하철

Kiyomizudera Temple - After lunch, we took a taxi to this temple and I’m really glad we did. It had been a long day already and we would have cried a little (maybe on the inside, maybe not), when we saw the hill we’d have to climb. It isn’t a crazy steep hill, but it isn’t pleasant when you’re already pooped! Anyway, it is easy to see why this is a very popular place to visit. There are great touristy shopping places on the way up to the temple and the views from the top are absolutely stunning! Gion District - After leaving Kiyomizudera, we took a taxi back to the BnB to freshen up and head out to the Gion District (the prime area to see Geishas and a very charming area of the city). Due to a couple snafus, we didn’t get to have a big dinner at one of the local hotspots and we didn’t see any Geishas. The following morning, we set off to see Kinkakuji (The Gold Pavilion) and tried to be there as soon as it opened (9am). We were close! We arrived around 9:20 and were thankful that we got our tired butts moving-it was already quite busy! I’m very happy we included this in our aggressive itinerary, as it was the second most memorable sights from our trip. It was stunning... Though it didn’t take us long to walk the grounds, it’s easy to see why it is at the top of all ‘must-do’ lists in Kyoto. 그 다음 날 아침, 킨가쿠지(금각사)를 보기 위해 나섰고 여는 시 간(오전9시)에 맞춰 가기 위해 노력했다. 거의 맞게 도착했다. 9

After finishing up there, we decided to save the bamboo forest for another trip (we didn’t want to run ourselves ragged for a second day in a row) and headed back to the BnB. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73

Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors. ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp. Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Things to remember while shopping

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market. Dongsan Shopping District You can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

Myungpoom Plaza Myungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun market. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
