Pam Pizza And Beer One of Daegu’s Best

• Written by Kyle Decker Photos by Kyle Decker, Lindsay Mickles, and Joseph Go Translated by Yujeong Lee

I have a confession: The first draft of this review was several pages of highly suggestive onomatopoeia. But since the editors tell me “text interpretations of heavy breathing is not a review” I’ll have to try and do Pam Pizza and Beer justice without alluding to adult situations.

As anyone who has been in Korea for any length of time will tell you, pizza here is a crap shoot. And even with Daegu stepping up its western food game immensely over the last three years, when it comes to trying new places, the discerning pie fan tends to be cautiously optimistic, with emphasis on the former. Being from the south suburbs of Chicago, I take pizza in all its forms very seriously. Also, beer. That said. Good, sweet, all manner of deities this is good pizza!

I’m a simple man. I like my beer cold, my wait staff friendly, and my pizza rich with cheese. And this place delivers on all fronts. At first I was nervous, but my apprehension lessened upon viewing a few photos. However, upon digging into my first slice of pepperoni...love. It was love. Plain and simple. I’ve found good pizza in Daegu, but this was the first that even remotely reminded me of the beloved pizza place in my home town. The crust was crispy and fused with cheese. The bottom of the crust was bumpy, adding not only great texture, but proved useful for gripping the delightfully greasy slices. These people know how to make crust. And they are not shy about cheese either. This is a heavy pizza. I went with my girlfriend and we ordered two small pizzas (a pepperoni and a spinach bacon). We barely managed to finish one and a half. I was hungry and felt like I over ate. So, to say it’s filling would be like calling a Daegu summer “a bit warm.” Price wise, pizzas fall in the 10-20 range depending on the size and toppings.

Next bit: the beer. The bottle selection is small, but well chosen, and reasonably priced. I had a Big Wave Golden Ale (Kona Brewery, Hawaii) for 7. Kronenbourg Blanc is 7 too. I also had a Pam Lager draft beer for 3.5, which was surprisingly good considering I’ve paid more for Cass.

The service deserves a mention as well. Menus are in English, which is helpful. When we ordered two small pizzas, one pepperoni and one spinach bacon, they accidentally brought us a small half-and-half of the two toppings. They made up for this mistake by bringing us a second half-and-half and not charging us for one

10

of the pizzas. Which, really more than made up for it. But then they offered us a free side in addition, which we had to refuse as further ingestion of food would have been impossible. Great service. Great people. All of these factors place it in my top three pizza places in town. I’ll have to go back a few more times before I know where in the top three it sits. It’s a contender.

As for how to find this place. Take the green line to Beomeo. Head out exit 2. Walk past the Starbucks/ Gym Mania building. Just past that is a parking lot. Turn left and cut through said parking lot. Cross the little side street. There’s a parking lot entrance to the high-rise apartment complex. Walk in there. Pam is on the ground floor of the high rise on your right side. Go. Bring your friends. Prevent your hangovers. Keep this place in business.

Soi 49 A Review of Daegu’s New Thai Restaurant

• Written by Gary Lynn Photos by Maria DuPreelynn and John Golding Translated by Yujeong Lee

I have been writing for the Compass off and on now for five years. My stories are about trips, events, stage plays and restaurants. During the Earth Day Festival, my wife Maria and I found a new restaurant called Soi 49 Thai fusion. The owner Nick Dongwon An, invited my wife and I to dinner. Nick was studying accounting at University in Australia and started cooking part time to help pay for school. He found that he liked cooking more than accounting. Nick cooked in Thailand for three months, then in Australia for a year. Then he move back to Daegu to cook at Noodleman for two years, this is where we met.

http://www.daegucompass.com

Soi 49 is located behind Daegu department store (Debec). You go to the outside stage and then go to Artbox, make a left by Paris Baguette, across from Daegu Bank. Soi 49 has a private room upstairs that sits four to six people and a bar that overlooks the ground floor that also sits four to six people. On the first floor, there is seating for fourteen people. With the mood lighting and the rugged ceiling with exposed bricks walls, it is quite and cozy. In addition, there is a projector that uses the wall as a screen. With easy listening music, it has a modern eclectic atmosphere. The cuisine is Thai fusion.

Soi 49 opened the first week of May and Nick said they do take reservations and have take out. The phone number is 01095643594 and email is won3594@hanmail. net. The doors open at noon and close at 10 pm. There are various items on the menu and all are affordable. The most expensive is the chicken and cashew nuts for 12,000 won; a stir-fried chicken dish with vegetables and cashew nuts.

Nick started our dinner with a Yum Kung salad. It has micro greens, shrimp, tomatoes, celery, spinach and iceberg lettuce with a chili paste, fish sauce, lime juice and sugar dressing. It was tender and tasty with a little kick. We then had Pad Gra Prow; chicken stir-fried with onion, bell pepper, broccoli, carrots, micro greens and spinach. It was fresh, light and seasoned perfectly. The sauce was a sesame oil vinaigrette. Light and oh so good! Next, we had Shrimp Pad Thai. The shrimp was moist, tender and cooked flawlessly, with noodles, bean sprouts, carrots, onions and egg. It had an awesome presentation on a banana leaf. When you see food that is pleasing to the eye before you even smell or taste it, it makes the smelling and tasting that much more enjoyable. Our dinner experience was in a word, “GREAT!”

Nick’s plan is for people to come here and relax, eat and drink. When it warms up, the plan is to open the front windows and put the tables outside with a tub of beer in ice, ready for the customers. He wanted an exclusive place, off the main road. Once you get here, you will know where good food is in Daegu. Nick wants you to come and enjoy. I know we did and plan to go back.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game Samsung Lion’s Park • Written by John Golding Photos by John Golding and Lindsay Mickles Translated by Yujeong Lee

I have a confession to make and I will only say it once. Are you ready for this shocking and diabolical truth? I’m not a huge baseball fan, there I said it and yet I somehow find myself going to a few games each season. For the past 3 seasons as a fresh convert, I travelled to the old stadium, which was close to downtown. However, the new stadium is now located on the green line (Line 2) at Daegu Grand Park station. To get there you need to take a subway headed towards Yeungnam University. No need to worry about missing you station as the driver will make an announcement about the Samsung Lions when you arrive if there is a match happening. Then you should head towards exit 4 and the stadium will be right in front of you.

One of my main concerns about the new stadium was whether the atmosphere would be the same. One thing that can kill a sporting event is a lack of atmosphere, for example certain football (soccer) games back home could be a real chore to sit through without the fans drumming up support and cheering on their team. Thankfully I can report that the old fun atmosphere is still intact at the new stadium. In fact the greater capacity at the stadium helps create an even greater atmosphere, especially when the local fans sing their team chants. I recommend trying to get seats in the cheering section. You can see what it’s like to be sat with the most passionate Lion’s fans.

The new giant scoreboard makes it easier to keep track of the team’s/player scores during the game and also displays their stats for the season so far. It’s also used for showing fun prize challenges between fans and also for a cheeky/sweet kiss cam. Baseball can be fun, but it also lasts for a while so it’s nice to have these fun activities break up the tension. -continued on p22-

Now, as these games last a while you’re going to need something to eat and drink. Don’t worry, Lion’s Park has plenty of places for you. Various chicken places (BBQ Chicken, Dang Dang Chicken and Burger King), traditional Korean snack food stands, a pizza place and C&U. All affordably priced, especially when compared to football stadiums in the UK. However, if you are feeling a little lazy and don’t feel like leaving your seat to walk to the C&U for beer you can call over one of the wandering Hite servers. They walk around each stand and can be called over to buy a glass of beer instead of having to get a big bottle from the store. I mentioned all of these places above because we are not allowed to bring in beer from outside the stadium and there are security checks when entering the stadium (if you have a bag).

Tickets for a game can be purchased at the stadium directly or if you can purchase online, though it is in Korean. In fact there is a smart ticket line for those who purchase online and display the barcode on their smartphone. All of the stands and rows are clearly displayed inside and outside the stadium making it easy to find your seats. In addition there are a lot of toilets just in case you have just one too many beers…

To sum it up, Lion’s Park is a great new venue that maintains the charm of the old location whilst improving on it with far more amenities, capacity and far nicer scenery surrounding the stadium. It’s great for a relaxed evening out with friends (more tense during playoffs if we make it this year…) and family as well. The atmosphere in the stadium is welcoming and friendly towards those uninitiated to the sport, just remember to invite an American friend if you want to know what is happening during the game!

Daegu Welcome Festival A Colorful Festival for All of Daegu’s Citizens • Written and Photographed by Annetjie Van Wynegaard Translated by Yujeong Lee

The 2016 Colorful Daegu Welcome Festival kicked off with a bang on Saturday morning, May 21st, when Daegu Metropolitan City and Maeil newspaper hosted the city’s expat community at the Gukchae-Bosang Movement Memorial Park.

The morning air was charged with excitement as locals and expats made their way to the big stage for the opening ceremony. A multicultural group of people – brought together by the City and a local organization called Art Factory Cheongchun – entertained the audience with their traditional Korean drumming, followed by a breathtaking Samulnori performance, or a traditional Korean dance which involves spinning a long ribbon on one’s hat.

Daegu Welcome Festival

Young and old enjoyed the complementary food, entertainment, information and cultural experience on offer at the 2016 Colorful Daegu Welcome Festival and the global community was well represented by exhibitions hailing from countries like Korea, Vietnam, France, Russia, Germany and Latin America.

The festival was a wonderful example of how Korea blends ancient art and wisdom with modern technology. Expats were able to try on traditional Korean dress – or Hanbok – and various booths sported colourful traditional clothing from all over the world. There was also a free oriental medicine clinic with complementary consultation and acupuncture.

Foodies would not have been disappointed by the eclectic mix of snacks and traditional drinks on offer at the festival. There were rice balls, puffed rice, curry (with rice or noodles), cotton candy, popcorn, ice cream, apples and so much more. Tea aficionados would have fainted at the sight of all the different traditional teas from around the world, while the Russian booth knocked many people’s breath away with its hospitable host and colourful array of intricate dishes.

The emphasis of the festival was on learning more about each other’s culture through hands-on experience. There were coloring activities for children and adults and a variety of crafts, which included making jewelry, key chains, paper art, face painting, beading, Hanbok design and cloth art. The Daegu Metropolitan Jungang Library showcased a beautiful collection of book covers and children could decorate their own key rings inside the booth.

Korean woman at two separate stalls showed passersby how to make soap and rice cakes, a musical booth hosted a myriad of traditional instruments and a Vietnamese exhibition boasted traditional Vietnamese toys, for example the balancing dragonfly. Another interesting attraction was the French stall which invited people to color a small piece of a larger picture.

26

Daegu Welcome Festival

Throughout the day people could stop at the Travelling Together booth, hosted by the city and Art Factory Cheongchun, where they could learn more about, and share their experiences of, exploring Daegu and the surrounding areas. Weaved between the hustle and bustle of the wondrous day was the fairytale photo zone – a source of great fun and merriment as children and adults stopped to pose with the vibrant fantasy characters.

http://www.daegucompass.com

The festival, however, wasn’t all fun, games and photo zones. It also tackled real issues like the prevention of child abuse, with the Daegu Bukbu Children’s Protection Agency campaigning for a safe and happy childhood for all.

One of the stand-out events at the festival was the fire and safety demonstration by 119 safety officers. 119 is the direct phone number to fire and ambulance emergency services operated by the National Emergency Management Agency. Small children and adults queued up to learn more about first aid procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and what to do in case of an emergency or a fire. The festival was also a great opportunity for expats to learn more about their human rights while living in South Korea.

From wholesome family fun and scrumptious food to art, entertainment and education, the 2016 Colorful Daegu Welcome Festival was one for the books. Be sure to catch it again next year!

The Expos at EXCO Daegu Medical Tourism is here to Serve You • Written by Elizabeth Riggio Translated by Yujeong Lee Photos by EXCO

Recently, the Daegu Medical Tourism group has worked to offer services in Daegu to participants of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events). MICE is a type of tourism meant to bring large groups together for a particular purpose. In this case, to help market all that Daegu has to offer. Of course, the Daegu Medical Tourism group was ready to promote its stellar services to tourists. Medical tourism brings people from abroad who are seeking different types of medical services. From April 14th-17th Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province hosted the 14th Tour Expo Daegu Gyeongbuk at EXCO. This tour consisted of in-bound marketing (marketing that brings visitors in rather than marketers going out) and a tribute to Korean tourism industry via tour attractions and traditional Korean culture. Simply put, this event was meant to attract foreigners to Daegu.

28

The Expos at EXCO

One of the highlights of the event was the Bolivian ambassador’s visit to the medical tourism promotional booth. Although living in Seoul, he was visiting Daegu to manage the Bolivian booth at the Expo. He visited the medical tour booth to address an issue with his jaw. The medical tourism manager from EXCO and a coordinator of the dermatology clinic working with the promotional booth helped him seek treatment. There is a Medical Tourism Program for MICE participants which includes an interpreting service, free transportation, and budgets according to “Support Program for a Daegu Medical Tourist.” Although the Ambassador lives in Seoul where there are already great hospitals and services, he was impressed with Daegu’s services. Especially due to Seoul’s large size, there are often too many hospitals and clinics to know which to choose from. However, Daegu runs medical tourism itself and participates in international conventions so the Ambassador could trust that he was receiving quality services. Overall, he found it a very positive experience.

Also part of MICE was the Daegu Beauty Expo that took place from May 20th-22nd at EXCO. The Daegu Medical Tourism group had a promotional booth that offered simple check-ups from the eye clinic, Nune Eye Hospital and the Oriental medicine clinic, Daegu Oriental Hospital of Daegu Haany University. Brochures and program guide books were offered as well as some gifts. The booth drew lots of foreigners from China, India, USA, Norway, Malaysia, Sweden and more, just to name a few. Some of the services offered included blood pressure tests, stress checks, eyesight tests, and an intraocular pressure test. Another highlight of the Daegu Beauty Expo by the Daegu Medical Tourism group was the Fam (Familiarization) Tour. This tour was put on by the chief of the beauty association with professors and students studying aesthetics/beauty. The itinerary of this tour included a visit to the Daegu Oriental Hospital of Daegu Haany University (Oriental medicine skin care), Kyung-

pook National University Hospital Hair Transplantation Center, and the BL Plastic Surgery & Dermatology. All locations included a hospital and facility tour. The tour ended with a healthy lunch of samgyetang, a popular Korean ginseng chicken soup. The tour garnered 20 participants including Wang Li Feng of China and others from Chinese Taipei, Macao, India, Indonesia, and China. The recent MICE events in Daegu have brought tourists from all over to see this wonderful city. In particular, the Daegu Medical Tourism group offered a whole host of opportunities to show tourists the great medical services Daegu provides. You can be sure that the Daegu Medical Tourism group is available and eager to help you find the care you need. Look for them at the next big event!

Mabijeong Mural Village A Rural Escape

• Written by Bridgett Hernandez Photos by Bridgett Hernandez (https://thenakedforeigner.com) and Lindsay Mickles (https://theneverendingwanderlust.com) Translated by Yujeong Lee

Nestled in the mountainous countryside of southwest Daegu is a little-known village dedicated to preserving its history through art. Its name,“Mabijeong”, is likely to elicit furrowed brows among foreigners and Daegu natives alike. “Mabi what? Never heard of it.”

Roughly translated as “Flying Horse Pavilion,” the mystical origin of the village’s name is fit for the land of Westeros. As the legend goes, the general who lived in the village (most likely after one too many bottles of soju) told his favorite horse that it must outrun an arrow or face beheading. The general let the arrow fly, but the horse collapsed before it could win the race. So the general cut off the poor creature’s head, and the villagers named the village Mabijeong after the fallen horse.

The Daegu Photography Club recently spent a sunny spring afternoon exploring Mabijeong Mural Village, home to 35 functioning households. Just a fifteen-minute drive from Daegok subway station, the quiet village is a change of pace from city life.

Mabijeong Mural Village

Mabijeong is small – it takes less than an hour to cover the village and nearby bamboo tunnel road by foot – but visitors can easily lose track of time taking in all its little details. Its murals and interactive art commemorate the ways of rural life between the 1960s and 1980s. One such mural illustrates a memory from school days past: On cold winter mornings, the village’s school children would place their metal lunch boxes on top of the classroom’s wood-burning stove so that come lunch time, warm meals would be waiting for them.

While the murals are Mabijeong’s main attraction, the village is visually interesting on its own. Its winding paths, traditional homes and areas that have been left to crumble and decay are fodder for the photographic eye. The village is also home to phallic and turtle shaped stone shrines that symbolize prosperity and development. A stone water basin at the foot of the shrine invites those passing by to toss in a coin and make a wish. -continued on p36-

For those seeking a few hours of respite from city life, Mabijeong Mural Village offers a rural escape. The village’s handful of cafés, vendors and pavilions invite visitors to linger and enjoy the outdoors. On the warm April day of our photo walk, Mabijeong was full of spring flowers, but the village is just as scenic in the fall when the leaves change colors and vendors sell dried persimmons and warm fishshaped cakes filled with sweet red bean paste.

Hongdae Happenings A Night in a Korean Kitchen

• Written by Shannon Milojkovic Photos courtesy of PMC Production Co. Ltd Translated by Yujeong Lee

What could be more sensational than a Korean cooking comedy, encompassing musical and physical talents that come together in a live production, created by only a handful of actors? Admittedly, I could not see how a cooking show could be remotely hilarious, and I wouldn’t rush to see a musical I’ve never heard of. Nanta is neither a musical or a cooking show... it is so much more!

We were taken to see Nanta in Hongdae on the last night of our late intake EPIK orientation. I think I speak for most of us when I say we were blown away by this seemingly humble production that professes to produce comedy and musical pizazz with the use of bodies and musical kitchen things. We arrived at the theatre and took the short journey down numerous staircases decorated with odd sculptures of pots and pans. We didn’t really know what to expect at this stage. After pressing through the mayhem of the theatre reception, we huddled into our seats. The theatre wasn’t huge, and it kind of felt like a small community in there. After a few moments, the show began. Its opening was beautiful and tranquil, as ancient Korea was introduced with some lovely things and gentle drumming. But this tone lasts for the opening scene only, before blasting into the chaos of its location: a Korean restaurant kitchen.

Nanta is not a new show, as I’m sure many reading this have at least heard of it before. It’s first performance was in 1997 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and it made its way to the New York Broadway in 2004. I’m -continued on p40-

happy to report, it is currently an open run. According to its website, Nanta now proudly boasts the largest audience in the history of Korea’s performing arts, what with the show being frequented by foreigners and locals alike. Nanta is nonverbal, which means it is not restrained by language.

But comedy is culture specific too, right? Somehow, Nanta glides right through those boundaries. This is a show that brings people together through its sheer hilarity, while introducing Korean culture in a lighthearted, but memorable way. The actors must possess an array of skills to produce this masterful piece. Nanta impresses its audience, firstly, by music. The sounds of ancient Korea lead into some seriously contemporary beats that force that foot to tap, most of which is produced live using kitchen ware. The music is combined with the carefully timed throwing and catching, jumping and dancing of the actors come cooks. Our group of actors (and actress) never fell out of character, and really looked like they were enjoying the whole thing. Alongside this impressive display of tricks and tunes, there is also a storyline that will grab you, which is the ribbon that ties all these fantastic elements together.

Nanta is currently showing in 4 locations in Korea: MyeongDong (Seoul); Hongdae (Seoul); Chungjeongno (Seoul) and Jeju. Ticket prices range from 40,000 won to 70,000 won. Each theater is Nanta’s own, so bookings should be done through the Nanta website: http:// nanta.i-pmc.co.kr

The website is user-friendly and has a full English version for you to use with ease. As I’m sure you can tell, I liked it. I loved it! Leaving the theatre, the whole group of us had a grin stuck on our faces, and we chuckled all the way back to the bus as we reminisced on the events we just saw. Spoiler alert: some of us got more involved in the production than we anticipated. I highly recommend making the effort to see this show.

Now, more about Hongdae, since you might be in the area. Hongdae is a long established area, but it is grabbing even more attention recently as the new need-tosee area in Seoul. Arts, shopping and indie music are apparently this area’s forte. You’ll also be charmed by

hundreds of coffee shops, restaurants and clubs, one of which is has a creative entrance made from an ordinary vending machine. There are tons of interesting places to eat and (of course) the ever popular trick-eye museum and free market, where artists can display and sell their work directly to the public. My own “To do” list includes this magical market of unique trinkets and tasty foods. If some of you want to explore this quirky shopping street too, head to Hongik University subway station on the green line, and use exit 9 to leave. Later, to get to the Hongdae Nanta theatre, you will have to head towards Hapjeong station. The Nanta theatre is almost slap-bang in the middle of these two stations, although about two blocks away from the green subway line. I hope this experience of mine has enticed you to see this marvelous production and visit another area of Seoul. You’ll never look at kimchi and cream cake in the same way again…

A Wicked Night in Daegu The Untold Story of the Witches of OZ • Written by Elizabeth Riggio Photos by Power4m Translated by Yujeong Lee

I first saw Wicked the musical live as a kid with a love of theater. I grew up with a great respect and appreciation for Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland, some of the greatest performers and singers. They were my idols. I had seen many musicals and even performed in some as a student. But nothing compared to how Wicked made me feel. The lights, the costumes, the sets, the voices… I was captivated. Watching Wicked in Chicago, front row, with my family, so many years ago, had one of the greatest impacts in growing my love of the performing arts.

If you are unfamiliar with the show, here is a very brief synopsis without giving away important details. Wicked is “The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz.” It is about Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, from the original story and film The Wizard of Oz. It delves into their relationship and how they became the people they were in the film. The music and lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz and the book by Winnie Holzman. The show I saw in Daegu featured a spectacular performance by Cha JiYeon (차지연) as Elphaba and Ivy (아이비) as Glinda.

That said, when I heard Wicked would be coming to Daegu, there was no question that I would be attending. And when I found out it was in Korean, I didn’t blink an eye. I certainly do not know enough Korean to understand a whole show, but just the thought of being around the energy of the performance was incentive enough. And boy am I glad I hadn’t let a language barrier deter me!

The show was held at the Keimyung University Arts Center. I had never been to this campus before and it is gorgeous. The Arts Center alone is a beautiful round dome building and has nice areas outside for sitting or taking a walk. With tons of restaurants right across the street, this could easily be turned into a whole evening event. For me, it was a great opportunity to get out of my typical shorts and t-shirt weekend look and dress up.

After grabbing some quick food with friends, we settled into our seats in the far upper section of the theater. Within the first notes of the opening overture, I was hooked. I’m the kind of person for whom the beginning bars of the overture can bring chills to my body, and this opening didn’t disappoint. Mind you, we were far back from the stage, and it was still a powerful opening. Immediately, the memories of young Elizabeth seeing Wicked for the first time came rushing back. It was a wonderfully nostalgic moment. Everything about the performance was breathtaking. From the costumes to the scenery to the orchestra to the incredible high notes, it was astounding. Although difficult at times due to language, it was worth it for the visuals and singing alone. The high notes in some of the major numbers such as “Defying Gravity” and “No One Mourns the Wicked” had me feeling alive. There were moments in which I felt utterly speechless.

You may be thinking, “That’s great, but I haven’t seen it in English and I don’t want to spend my money to see something I won’t understand.” I understand this and I will say that without prior knowledge of the show, it may be difficult to fully enjoy it. However, looking up the plot and listening to the songs prior to attending would help this. I went with some friends who had not seen it before so I spent some time explaining plot to them, but they said even without knowing the show, they thought it was a fun and worthwhile experience. If you are someone who enjoys live performances of any type, I highly recommend it. Not to mention, going to this show is a good way to do something different. We all get stuck in our schedules and routines so it’s necessary to switch things up every now and then. This is the perfect opportunity for that. Whether in Korean or English or any other language, the point of musical theater is to make you feel something. It is to make you feel emotions you haven’t felt in a while or maybe help soothe those emotions you are all too familiar with now. It makes you laugh and it makes you cry. This show did all of this and more. Before leaving the Arts Center, I wanted to take a photo of the poster boards that highlighted the main performers. There was a long line to wait and take a photo with these posters so I tried to snap a picture of just the posters before some people walked into the frame. It was two young girls who seemed to be sisters. Looking at their faces and the way they gushed over the pictures of the women on the posters reminded me of myself when I first saw this show. Who knows, maybe one day those girls will be the next Elphaba and Glinda.

Gajok

Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p56 for directions. Open & Close: 13:00-01:00 Tel: 053-252-1481 Add: 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu

Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Kim Kwang-suk Road

Kyungpook Uni. Area

Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwangsuk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.
