LA LUCE - RESTAURANT REVIEW

Fine Dining in Daegu has a new name ~ La Luce L

Written by Lee Flory / Photos by Ivan Broida

a Luce is a beautiful, spacious restaurant located just across the street from Kyungpook University Hospital. Kim Sun Il, the 27-year-old owner and head chef has put together an incredible menu featuring “contemporary European cuisine.” If that seems like too broad a definition don’t worry, this is not some new age fusion style eatery. Fantastic dishes with roots in Italy, Spain and Greece are all represented as they should be; without any contrived mixing and matching. Whatever you choose to order, it will be authentic and prepared with great care and attention to tradition. Chef Kim, who was recently named one of the top young chef ’s in the country by Vogue Korea, spent the last two years honing his craft in Seoul. Feeling ready to run his own establishment, he decided to come to Daegu, his mother’s hometown. And so, along with two close friends/coworkers from

6

Itaewan, (and his mom, who works with him in the kitchen) he opened La Luce. The fact that the owner and his employees are friends and family adds a very pleasant, close-knit vibe to the environment. He explains that he wants to give his customers a fine dining experience with casual prices. The fine dining experience he speaks of is apparent not just in the food, but in the service and atmosphere as well. Six wooden four-top tables and a large banquette are spaced wide apart in the huge dining area. The sparsely decorated walls are painted a warm yellow. Only a

small counter divides the dining room from the kitchen, so you can look in on the action no matter where you sit. As soon as we were seated our waitress presented us with a basket of warm rosemary focaccia with a small saucer of olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping. Next we received a perfectly assembled caprese salad. As simple a dish as it is, this one is a cut above in the quality department. Bright red tomatoes bursting with flavor combined with top-notch buffalo mozzarella and dressed with oil, balsamic vinegar and fresh basil leaves (ripped, not chopped, of course); it was just the thing to whet our appetites for what would be a sensational meal.

LA LUCE - RESTAURANT REVIEW which are big enough for two people, cost between 10,000 and 17,000. Desserts all cost under 5,000. Heineken, Moretti and Guiness are the only beers available and cost 6,000, 7,000 and 8,000 respectively. Glasses of house red or white wine are only 5,000, but if you fancy yourself a sommelier then check out La Luce’s impressive, all Italian wine list. A bottle will run you anywhere from 15,000 to 191,000.

The first main dish we sampled was the Burger David. It seemed like a standard cheeseburger at first blush, but like most of the things on the menu at La Luce, it had a few gourmet tricks up its sleeve. The patty, made from top grade Han-woo beef was topped with aged cheddar, caramelized onions and whole grain mustard. We had trouble choosing a pasta dish (there’s at least ten different ones on the menu), so our waitress recommended the Gnocchi di Patate. It did not disappoint. It came in a rich cream sauce, and the gnocchi, which is made on the premises, was the ideal texture; soft, but not at all mushy. Next we got the Coca de Senorita, a gigantic piece of flat bread piled high with seasonal vegetables and bacon. Visually, it’s a sight to be-

hold; huge and as colorful as can be. Leafy mixed greens, tomatoes, red onions and yellow peppers on top of the fresh baked bread. Throw some bacon into the mix and you’re in flavor country. Because the Coca de Senorita is so big, you probably shouldn’t bother with it unless you have three or more people in your party. For the grand finale, we were treated to a panful of paella with fresh mussels, giant shrimp, squid and octopus served on top of a bed of delicious, fluffy saffron rice. If you are craving a taste of Spain, then this is surely the way to go. Chef Kim’s vision of fine dining and casual prices has been realized. Not one of the 18 main dishes available cost more than 22,000 Won per person, and most of them are in the 13,00016,000 range. The salads,

The easiest way to get to La Luce is by subway. Take the green line to the Kyungpook University Hospital stop (one stop from Banwoldang) then walk two blocks north. It is located on the second

floor of the Bun Hong Bitseu Ro Building, directly across from the hospital. If you prefer to take a taxi, tell the driver “Kyungpookdae-hokbyeoung-won.” Chef Kim’s gorgeous restaurant is not to be missed. From the moment you step into La Luce, you will be treated to superior service, friendly faces and of course, great food. Check it out soon!

WELCOME TO KOREA - TIPS AND HELP

Welcome to Korea – tips for fun! Here’s Some Help A Written by Stevie Baker / Photos submitted by Stevie Baker

s my time in Korea comes to a close, I've taken a lot of time to reflect on the things I've learned and done here. There are many resources that I've come across in my time here and many things I've learned that I wish I had known when I first arrived. Here is some helpful information for those of you just arriving and hopefully a few things for those of you who have been here for a while.

what you want. Learn to read Korean. There's no reason not to, it takes almost no time to learn the alphabet and you can take classes very inexpensively through the Daegu YMCA. Look up Daegu YMCA “Lets Learn Korean” on facebook. While you're at it, you can sign up for Minhwa (Korean art) classes, drum classes and various other things. The YMCA is a great resource.

Education First things first, learn to read Korean. You don't need to learn to speak the language fluently to survive here, Korea really caters to English speakers, but you must learn to read hangeul (the name of the Korean alphabet). The reason is simple, when Korean words on signs are written in English they are often not written the way you would pronounce them in Korean. Do yourself a favour, make it easier for taxi drivers and Koreans to understand you and

Be Social Get out there and get involved. The Daegu Expat community is great and it's easy to find people with similar interests. When it comes to getting involved, Facebook (love it or hate it) is going to be your best friend while you're here. No matter what you're into, there's a group here for you to get involved with. From theatre, music, softball and frisbee to bowling, art, photography and rugby you can find it on Facebook (Daegu Info Guide).

Food Something people struggle with here after they settle in is a lack of the ingredients and food they are used to. These days, in Daegu we have a lot more options for foreign food than when I arrived in the restaurant scene. For those of you who like to cook, the following places are going to be a big help to you: Buy the Book Cafe – you can get curry pastes, chick peas, cumin, deodorant, whole wheat flower and a selection of goods that is growing all the time. Costco – if you're lucky enough to have a “normal” sized fridge and freezer, Costco can be a great place to get chicken breast, frozen berries and vegetables, salmon fillets and tuna canned in water instead of oil. High Street Market – yes, it is in Seoul, but if you're in Seoul for the weekend it's worth a trip, they have great cheese, cuts of meat and cooking supplies. Iherb – iherb.com is a great resource for vitamins, spices, seasonings and vegetarian and vegan supplies. Traditional markets – if you're lucky enough to live close to a traditional market learn your numbers and get your fruit, vegetables and tofu there. We frequently get a weeks work of veg and tofu for around 7,000 won. You can't beat it. Travelling I LOVE to travel and chances are you do, too. I've have travelled extensively through Korea and the following resources have been a huge help. Naver Maps – maps. naver.com for this, you are going

8

WELCOME TO KOREA - TIPS AND HELP to have to either read Korean or have a good sense of direction. Naver maps can be used to find out the best routes to wherever you're going in cities across Korea. It tells you the best routes from point A to B via subway and bus. It will also tell you how much money it will cost in a taxi in normal traffic. It has saved my life countless times. At the top left of the screen there are two buttons the one marked “길찾기” will pop up a menu that gives you various transit options, just click on the little upside down tear shaped markers and place them on the map. It will calculate your route for you. For your train needs go to korail.com. You can see the schedules and prices for all three types of trains across the country. Another tip is you can buy family seats on the KTX. If you're travelling with four people you can buy

a table seat that will easily save each person you're travelling with 10,000 won or more. If travelling by bus kobus.co.kr is similar to the KTX site. It doesn't show all the bus routes in the country, but it shows a lot which is really helpful. Love motels are cheap and great way to travel. They usually

have computers in the rooms, a big bathtub and space to lounge. If you're headed to another city for a big festival weekend, it's helpful to know that love motels can and should be booked in advance or you could end up spending triple what you're used to. continued on p11

DAEGU NIGHTLIFE

DAEGU IS SHUFFL’N, SHUFFL’N Written by Jennifer Chaussee / Photos by Scott McLaughlin

22:00 is the witching hour in Daegu. Once the minute hand grants the hour, shop owners bolt towards their front doors with their coats on and their keys in hand. By 22:30 the lights are out and the music is off but the city is anything but dead. Just a few blocks away in the Samduk area of downtown, the daytime shoppers and opalescent makeup ads have been replaced with leather-skirtand-studded-jeans-wearing crowds sipping neon liquid from tall plastic bag drinks amid a throng of pulsing dance clubs and their matching neon signs. At night, a whole new kind of circus comes to life for Daegu’s night crawlers. There’s something for everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Korean or a foreigner, if you drink wine or soju or nothing but coffee, if you want to dance, chill, or play darts all night. Samduk’s nightlife caters to all cravings and curiosities. Besides the host of throbbing dance clubs filled with smoke and mirrors, there are quaint pubs foaming over with the good cheer of clinking pint glasses, closetsized bag drink bars where you choose your liquor-to-mixer ratio, velvety cocktail bars nodding to the beats of local DJs, jazzy candle-lit wine cellars, and sobering triple-decker late-night coffee shops chock full of bespectacled iPad carriers. But first, the food. Before heading out to get your drink on, you’ll want to stop at 10

one of the many late-night grub joints. Trust me on this. You’ll need the energy and the sustenance to keep up with the onslaught of cheap, strong drinks and endless dancing. If you’re hoping to catch the last subway downtown at about 23:00, you can kill some time before the hot spots get busy by heading to Traveller’s Bar and Grill for one of their amazing burgers or a plate of chicken wings, both equally beloved by expats. This pub spot is usually packed with expats and has the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of your favorite hometown bar. You can mingle around the pool table or jump in on a game yourself. If you’re craving Mediterranean, Star Kebab is one of the rare spots in Daegu where you can find authentic Turkish foods like the staple lamb kebab, creamy hummus with baguette, and falafel. If you’re lucky you might run into Magic, downtown’s friendly magic man who will sit at your table, flirt with your friends, and steal your jewelry without even touching you. But no worries, he gives it all back before he leaves. After you’re fueled and ready, it’s time to get

your drink on. Head to one of the swanky lounges to get a feel for the finer thingsof downtown. If it’s wine you’re wanting, you can count on the D bar for a comprehensive list of commendable wines kept at appropriate temperatures in a legitimate wine cave. Bottles from every spectrum of viticulture and top grape-growing regions of the world are priced anywhere from a 100,000 KRW to 37,000 KRW. Corks are popped and poured by knowledgeable staff with a side of crackers and nuts. This is a great place to go for an expensive but intimate date, where you can be surrounded by melting candles, brick walls, soft blankets, private enclaves, and classic jazz. For a more group-friendly environment, take your posse to one of several mellow lounges

DAEGU NIGHTLIFE General Korea What's Happening A great resource for being in Korea is the www.visitkorea.or.kr . Some of the articles are out of date, but they tend to have links to updated websites. Korea is festival city, nearly every month there's a great festival somewhere in the country and you can check them all out here http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/festival . Another great way to learn about life here or other cities you may want to visit are blogs. Some of my favourites include tigersandmagpies. com, briandeutsch.blogspot. com and bathouseballads – elwood5566.net. Not To Be Missed I want to leave you with a few things I did in my time in Korea that I feel are not to be missed.

Some I expected to be amazing, others were a total surprise. Korea Independence Hall is the best museum I have been to in Korea, for some unknown reason it is located in Cheonan, but it is amazing and well worth the trip. If you're going to go to any museum in the country, go to this one. Jeju Island: I didn't believe the hype. I thought it would be nice, but nothing special. I was so very, very wrong. It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited and anyone who tells you that you can't get around easily on a bus is crazy. Staying in a Minbak and seeing the traditional fireworks at the Andong Maskdance Festival. This was incredible. The festival is great because you can see dances from all over the world, but the fireworks were really something. It was completely

unexpected and beautiful. Do it, do it, do it! 5.18 National Cemetery in Gwangju. At the cemetery grounds there is a GREAT museum that explains the 5.18 massacre in detail as well as houses some heart wrenching objects, video and radio broadcasts. Gyeongju – I won't get into this here because you will most certainly go and everything you see will be amazing. This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to resources that our there for you while you're here in South Korea, but hopefully knowing about these right off the bat will help you settle in quickly and start thinking about things you want to do while you're here. Embrace Korea, enjoy your time here and explore, I most certainly did.

DAEGU NIGHTLIFE cover charge at the door ranging from 5,000-15,000 KRW. Ironically, this cost is usually waved for foreigners. Depending on the night, the size of your group, and the mood of the bouncers, this free admittance is either granted without request or after some easy negotiating. Here you’ll find a more authentic and localized experience among the mostlyKorean crowd.

bars to order a gin and tonic and enjoy the remixed house beats and morecandle-lit ambience. This is a great way to start the night if you’re looking to take it easy and look hot over a few sweaty rum and cokes before getting reckless at a triple-decker dance spot. A word about DJ’s in Daegu. There are plenty of funky beats to get you dancing in Daegu but the lack of monetary incentives paid to DJ’s by clubs and bars makes it hard to attract a wealth of experienced DJ’s. As compared with big-budget clubs in Seoul and Busan, where DJ’s can expect to make upwards of 20,000-200,000 KRW per hour for their sets, many Daegu clubs and bars offer little-to-no pay, though most offer free drinks to their DJ’s. Luckily, you can still find a variety of styles around downtown and the best way to find your favorite is to go out and visit a healthy smattering of clubs to see which DJ’s get you going. When you’re on the prowl, don’t forget to check out Loca, Daegu’s brand new dance club. You won’t want to miss it for it’s fresh take on the classic elements of the downtown scene. 12

Large clubs like Monkey usually give their DJ’s pre-selected set lists, while some of the slower venues usually allow for a bit more artistic expression and experimentation on the part of the DJ. Expat DJ’s AronFreitag, CrisRtek, and John Lockley are regulars on the scene and can be found at places like Kush, Apple Lounge, and G2 on most weekends. They play progressive house and tech house. At Pasha you can rely on the predictable set of LMFAO remixes to keep you shufflin.’ The sweaty walls, energetic crowd, on-stage dancing, and the hazy light shows will be enough to distract you from the occasional rough transition or missed drop. For hip-hop mixes that bring you back to the days when you first heard 50 Cent or Lil Wayne, you can count on Club Frog. Here you’ll find a bar on all threefloors and you can scout out the dance pit from the third floor balcony after stashing your bags and coats in a locker downstairs for a meager 2,000 KRW. You’ll want to wind up here around 3 a.m. or later to get the best of the crowd and the music. These clubs technically have a

But if you’re looking for a more expat-centered experience you can step foot into one of the everpopular Thursday Parties. Almost everyone is a foreigner and the space is close and cozy. The vibe here is almost identical to that of the fraternity parties you went to in college. Lots of polo shirts and levi jeans, with a few couples making out in the corner or across the shuffle board. This is where memories are made and then soon forgotten. Now, a word about timing. Clubs and bars in Daegu don’t really close. Or, so it seems. The nightlife of downtown warms up at around 22:30 and just begins to get hot around midnight or later. The dance clubs can keep you going until sunrise. If you’re real energized or just a dedicated night owl, you mine as well start late and keep dancing until the first subway comes, saving you the cost of a taxi ride home. So go dig up that pleather skirt you wore in college, get a close shave, and stop off at the ATM before setting foot into the wild rumpus. Good luck out there.

DAEGU VENUES

We do it LIVE: DAEGU Venues Written by Sanita Saengvilay / Photos by Scott McLaughlin, Ben May (Club That) and Champs

Miss going to live shows? Want to show everyone how great you are at shredding at the guitar? Well move your body to one of these venues and sit back and enjoy the tunes.

Commune’s Lonely Hearts Club

Commune’s, what the cool kids call it, is an underground bar that easily converts to a music venue, you can do so just by simply looking over to the corner where all the amps are placed. A hop skip away from SamDeok or the Fire Station, it’s a quick and easy stop over for beginning or end of the night. It’s relatively small and minimal seating so optimal for dancing parties of 20 people or less. Also great for sing-alongs and impromptu jam sessions. Mostly local bands perform on the weekends, but they do have an open mic night during the week. Go to the bar to check out monthly schedules for when there is live music. Otherwise, it’s a good bar for chilling and listening to indie music.

Club That

The one venue that isn’t located underground, located above Thursday Party, Club That is a must go for live music and jazz lovers. Containing probably the biggest stage for bands to perform on and a floor space that can fit up to 30 people or plenty of seating too if you so choose to. Mostly local bands, but national acts also perform at Club That. The bar is great for big groups too. Cover charge ranges from $10-$15 depending on the band. Check out the bar’s calendar for events.

Urban

Don’t miss Urban with its big graffiti style sign. Located on the same street and in between both Thursday Parties, walk downstairs and this disco ball, laser beam light show venue is not what you would have suspected it to be. It is one of the bigger venues in Daegu and it includes an actual stage and floor space that can fit upwards to 60 people on it. It has seating, but much more limited on show days. Sound can be a bit tinny in spots so ears plugs are a recommendation or try not to stand directly in front of the speakers. International acts come every few months and local bands perform weekly including an open mic night. Covers range from $10-$15 depending on the bands. This colorful place is a must know for any music lover. Check out the bar for a calendar of events. 14

DAEGU VENUES

Champs

The newest venue on the block, located underground and across the street from Greek’s. This sport bar themed is currently the shiniest place of the bunch. The bar has a small corner stage, but plenty of seating throughout. Dance space in front of the stage may fit 15 people, but you can pretty much dance wherever you want. DJ sets occur more frequently than live band shows, but the venue is slowly building a repertoire. Cover charges for bands range from $5 - $10. Local bands perform every so often, so check out the bar’s calendar.

Sugar Joe’s

Outside of downtown in Kyungpook University area there is Sugar Joe’s. One of the most popular places for small intimate shows that feature the likes of Han Solo and other local acts. Sugar Joe’s is located on the main road across from Kyungpook Buk Moon. Walk up the hill on the main road and it’s on your right. They have open mic nights and bands will come through on the weekend. Check it out!

KAFC - WELCOME NEW FRIENDS

Welcome to the Korean American Friendship Circle

Written by Shin,Seong jin Photo by G9 19th ESC

T

he Republic of Korea and the United States of America has one of the strongest relationships in the world and this truth can be seen through our unwavering support between both nations. Even though both our nations are brothers in arms, throughout this time, we’ve forgotten the importance of the ROK-US Alliance and made the mistake of thinking that this alliance comes free without any effort. As a student participant and future leader of Korea, the Korean American Friendship Circle (KAFC) provides a means to emphasize the importance of this alliance and help gain a deeper understanding through social and cultural exchange. Through the KAFC activities we are able to understand each other’s culture and traditions and build a stronger camaraderie between both nations. At first, it was difficult for me to start the KAFC not only because of our language barriers but also because I was starting something new that included foreigners, so I naturally drew a line between myself and them. But as the Americans showed such hospitality and extended their hand in friendship, I was embarrassed of judging without truly understanding. So I learned what it meant when people said that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. After the Opening Ceremony of the 17th KAFC, the 19th 16

ESC graciously invited us to a St Patrick’s Day Event. St Patrick’s Day celebration is a Christian feast in honor of the patron saint Patrick of Ireland. The tradition originates in Ireland. As Irish immigrants moved to England and the United States they continued the tradition. As with many traditions in America, the holidays and customs immigrants brought with them from their home countries were merged in two and later became the American traditions they celebrate today. All the participants of the 17th KAFC appreciated the chance to experience a different culture through the St. Patrick’s Day event that the 19th ESC hosted on March 17, 2012. Cultural

exchange activities like the St. Patrick’s Day event helps us learn each other’s culture and through more cultural exchange activities we will be able build a stronger relationship and gain a deeper understanding of each other. Although the ROK-US Alliance is one of the strongest alliances in the world, both our countries experience difficulty because of social and cultural differences. This can pose a great issue if Korea were to ever go to war. So the understanding of both language and cultural is that much more important to ensure we have the ability to fight together as allied forces and have the strength of one nation.

KAFC - WELCOME NEW FRIENDS identical ideals when it comes to freedom, justice and human rights. Our alliance is one of the strongest in the world and is very important in the volatile future. I believe in the past, the relationship between Korea and America was based on needs following the Korean War.

COL. Chadbourn answered on my questions. Q: I want to know about your opinion about the importance of the KAFC program and how much impact it has on our two nations?

I think KAFC is important because it helps us build a new kind of relationship between Koreans and Americans. One of understanding and mutual respect through personal relationships. Although our two nations have very different cultures, we have almost

However, due to the resiliency of the Korean people, your country has become one of the greatest nations in the world. It is still important that we continue to have a strong alliance to ensure both our nations futures are stable, safe and secure. I believe together we can accomplish this goal. HOI AN - VIETNAM - SHOP - EAT - GO

Hoi An, Vietnam: Shop, Eat, and Go. Written by Mandy Shimizu / Photos by Christopher Cote / Translated by Siron Jang

hopping: Normally, I am not a big shopper, but Downtown Hoi An made it fun, cheap, and interesting. One can easily wander the streets all day and still not burn out. The people in Vietnam are active and bustling, so at the very least you can have a drink and people watch. Even if you only have one day to spend in Hoi An, I suggest that you check out the local markets, because they will really give you a feel of the town and its people. Ladies, be sure to check out all the jewelry and clothes you can, because you can't find jewelry and silk clothing this cute and inexpensive anywhere. Also, I scored a lot of really awesome art to decorate my drab apartment walls. I am all about trying to make sure that I find souvenirs with a little authenticity, so it was really cool to find original art, with a true point of view, as well some retro propaganda prints. And if you like to make purchases that help others you should seek out the Lifestart Foundation Workshop. The way it works is that the organization helps organize local people to make goods to sell to tourists like me. The idea is that instead of just throwing money at a problem within a community to give temporary relief, this foundation helps the people become more independent and self-sustaining as they learn how to take their skills to create a product and sell it. Often times you can even meet the people, who are creating these products, right in the store. (I bought great coasters) Check out this website for more details: www.lifestartfounda18

Food. The food in Hoi An is just like the shopping. Never ending, cheap, and delicious. I really recommend visiting Morning Glory, a restaurant named after the popular vegetable, also known as “water spinach.” The food at this restaurant was great and the servings were not too big. Order a lot so you can try a little bit of everything. My favorites were the sautéed morning glory (of course) and the spring rolls, which were the best I ate in Vietnam. If you enjoy the food and want to try your hand in the kitchen and learn to make some of the dishes, there are endless possibilities. In front of half the restaurants there are signs that advertise cooking classes, so do your research and choose which class you are most interested in. I took a class and learned how to make vegetable and prawn spring rolls, my quang, and a banana blossom salad. They even gave me a packet of the recipes so I can recreate it at home.

Transport. I visited Hoi An during the Lunar New Year, so it was busier than usual, but I quickly found that the abundant scooters have no fear of cars or running over pedestrians so be careful. If you are brave, you can rent bikes or scooters (I was not brave) to take you around town, to the nearby city of DaNang, or the closest thing the area has to hiking at Marble Mountain (also the place where you can find a marble statue of anything you can imagine). If you are not so brave, taxis are also an inexpensive alternative. My family and I kept a taxi for about 5 hours one day and the total ended up being 35 dollars, which is not a lot for a personal chauffeur for the day. Although I was not brave enough to bike or scooter, I was coaxed by a very persuasive Vietnamese lady to hop aboard her small rowboat. 20

I will say it was the most stressful 15 minutes I had in Hoi An, because I constantly felt as if we were going to be capsized. But once it was over, I could appreciate the different and quieter perspective I gained of Hoi An during the float down the river.

MAGNIFICENT MALAYSIA

Magnificent Malaysia Written and Photographed by Ciara Keenan / Translated by Suhyun Lee

U

nique - If one word had to be used to describe Malaysia that would have to be it. The epitome of all that accumulates to make Malaysia one of the most incredible places to travel or visit is its fundamental diverse nature and ethos. On the government website it is marketed as ‘Malaysia – truly Asia’ but what beholds one in Malaysia is much more than this alone, it is harmonious multiculturism which is seen in every inch and aspect of daily life.

The country is an amalgamation of cultures and identities. Indian and Malay dominate but there is also an unmistakeable Chinese presence, particularly in the bigger cities. To contemplate travelling this vast and spread out country in its entirety a few months would be needed at the very least, however in a week a number of major attractions can be seen that will more than satisfactorily render a visit worthwhile.

Geographically Malaysia consists of three federal territories and is made up largely of two land masses divided by the South China Sea, with a number of small islands dotted around the coast lines. The larger of the two central areas is home to the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Flying directly to KL from South Korea will take you around six hours from Seoul Incheon and the cheapest flight operator would be AirAsia. A bus from Kuala Lumpur airport to KL Sentrel costs 9MYR (4,000 SKW) and takes little over 1hour. There are an abundance of buses

available so booking in advance is not necessary.

Kuala Lumpur Although many discerning travellers chose to avoid big cities in favour of a more authentic experience, Kuala Lumpur is definitely one city not to be overlooked. If you have time then there are at

MAGNIFICENT MALAYSIA least a dozen major attractions to leisurely visit in Kuala Lumpur. There is the Palace, the National Mosque, the KL Towers and the National Monument. However, Little India, China Town and the Batu Caves are arguably the three top priorities.

Little India A 5-minute walk from KL Sentrel is the infamous ‘Little India’. This area will immediately transport those who visit into an authentic Indian way of life. Walking along the boulevard your ears will fill with fast paced, up-tempo Bollywood music playing at almost every shop. You will also enjoy the sights and smells of all things Indian, including incense, saris, jewellery and much, much more. A must is to go into one of the many Indian eateries and order a curry. Do not be shocked when it is served on a large leaf rather than a plate and you will be expected to eat with your hands as this is standard throughout Malaysia. If you struggle to embrace this particular culinary habit, cutlery is available upon request. Be warned Malaysian food is generally spicy and is said to be difficult for vegetarians. Spicer options would be ‘rendang chicken’ which is chicken marinated usually served with rice. Other less fiery options would be stir-fried noodles or a

meat fried rice dish. Menus are often varied, inexpensive (around the equivalent of 5,000KRW) and always delicious.

MAGNIFICENT MALAYSIA

Batu Caves Another must-see is the Batu Caves. This sacred Hindu worship area is a place of reverence and respect with hundreds of devotees coming to worship at the numerous shrines. Once you have climbed the 272 steps leading up to the three main caves, the majestic limestone formations offer a welcome reprieve from the sizzling Malaysian climate. Although the place is tranquil, beware of the monkeys. They can be angry and are modern day pick-pockets. The will steal anything they can get there monkey hands on, cameras, food, flip flops, literally anything detachable from your body. Consider yourself warned!!

China Town A visit to the big city would not be complete without a visit to China Town. Set along Petaling Street, the hustle and bustle of this busy area provides a real market-place experience. This has the potential to be a shopper’s heaven or hell. The place is over-flowing with imitation goods, from sunglasses to dresses to handbags to watches to DVDs and absolutely everything imaginable in-between. Either way embrace it and have fun. If actually making a purchase, keep in mind that bargaining is standard. The vendors deliberately start off at absurdly high prices so, be prepared to barter and depending on your resoluteness you can pay less than half the initial asking price. For maximum impact, visit China Town in the evening as it really comes alive and don’t miss out on sampling some Chinese or Malay cuisine along this area as it boasts some charmingly authentic eateries.

Tamen Negara If your ready to move out of the city then one highly recommended option would be a visit to the breathtaking ‘Tamen Negara’. A translation of the Malay ‘Tamen Negara’ gives National Park, however this is a complete understatement and fails to do justice to what this wonder of the world actually has to offer. One of the oldest rainforests on the earth

MAGNIFICENT MALAYSIA believed to be around 130-million years old, this opportunity offers travellers a retreat from the modern day and an experience that would be difficult to rival. The abundance and diversity of nature is phenomenal as this enclave is home to one of the world’s most complex and rich ecosystems. A tropical haven with undulating landscapes, rivers, rapids, secluded caves, rising ridges and mountains, this little piece of undisturbed natural paradise begs to be explored. With a variety of accommodation ranging from the very basic hostel to picturesque cabins, your budget will dictate how you dwell while in the rainforest, however even the cheapest options which are around 10MYR per night are very basic but liveable. There are guides who run a number of worthwhile tours from canopy walks, nighttime safaris on foot or in a 4x4,

rapid shooting bird watching, fishing and much more. To get to Tamen Negara you can take a bus from almost anywhere in Malaysia to Kuantan. Once in Kuantan there are guides who will take you by boat into the centre of the rain forest. Packages may be offered for around 300MYR but paying as you go will work out cheaper and afford more freedom should your plans change.

MAGNIFICENT MALAYSIA conservatively dressed including when at the beach. Stripping down to a bikini is fine but be sensitive and respectful and for those who are body-conscious, your partially clothed body will receive some attention. Beach huts are the standard accommodation and range from 40MYR to 50MYR. These are basic but usually include electricity and cold running water.

Beaches If rest and relaxation are sought after, Malaysia offers some of the most relaxing and serene beaches in existence. If time and finances permit, a visit to one of the many islands such as Langkawi, which is the largest of the multitude of islands that lie off the coast of Kedah state, is recommended. It offers idyllic beaches and clear blue skies with a range of accommodation types and activities. To access the island a flight will need to be booked in advance which will bring you directly onto the island. AirAsia tends to be the most affordable means of travelling to alternate parts of Malaysia. How26

ever if staying on the mainland makes more sense then Cherating beach is the perfect option. This quiet area is more popular with Malaysian locals than travellers which gives it an extra appeal. With so many available activities, finding time to relax on the beach will become difficult for action junkies. The wind conditions in Cherating make it ideal for windsurfing and kite-flying. Slightly more relaxing options would be the night-time fireflies tour, the river cruise or even banana boating, all of which are very affordable costing around 20 MYR (less than 10,000 won). Cherating is also a favourite with turtles who are coming to nest. There are sanctuaries and tours available which will allow an up-close encounter with the reptiles As Malaysia is divided by the South China Sea, water temperatures at the beach are attractively warm, making swimming in the ocean a truly enchanting experience that would be difficult to rival anywhere else in the world. As Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, females tend to constantly be very

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary Wherever in Malaysia you choose to travel, if returning to Kuala Lumpur for a flight, a stop at the Kuala Gandah elephant sanctuary is well worth your time. This institution rehabilitates and cares for orphaned or endangered Malaysian elephants. You will be given the opportunity to feed, bathe and even ride the elephants and it is all free. However, feel free to donate. Getting to the sanctuary can be tricky and local buses in Malaysia can prove unreliable at the best of times. The safest option is to go via one of the bus companies to the closest station possible and from there catch a cab.

Cameron Highlands Again, another nature treasure trove Malaysia has to offer is the is the largest and most famous hill resort in the country. Being a primarily agricultural domain, you will find an abundance of vegetables and fruits farms here. Cameron Highlands is also the leading producer of flowers and tea in Malaysia. Be prepared to encounter some extraordinary flowers you won’t see flourishing elsewhere in Malaysia. YET, this is all but a very brief overview of what Malaysia has to offer. It quintessentially is a living breathing definition of a modern day melting pot. The fusion of identity is witnessed through the food, the music, the nightlife, the people and the sense of openness and acceptance of difference is infectious and ubiquitous.

new country. A new city. Different faces, places, sites and smells. Our taxi was surrounded on all sides by motorbikes with three too many smiling passengers on each ride, we knew we were no longer in Bangkok, the hustlers haven. It toke some savvy scheduling and fancy flight coordinating but my friend and I finally arrived in Phnom Penh, the second stop on our two week South East Asian adventure. After breezing through customs in under an hour, we knew forking out that bit of extra dough to fly into the country instead of crossing the dreaded border between Thailand and Cambodia by bus was the absolute only way to go. So armed with our list of “to-do’s” in one hand and the preferred USD in the other, we were ready to begin our 6 day Cambodian extravaganza.

The Bright Lotus, our supremely well located accommodation, was situated in the heart of the historic district. This made the perfect starting off point for exploring the city by foot, a great way to feel this bustling city’s pulse and get a glimpse at the everyday chaos--what we call “traffic.” We spent our first morning wandering the famous Wats that sprinkle the waterfront, the Central Market, the National Museum and the Royal Palace. To make sure we hadn’t missed any hidden wonders, we hired a tuk tuk driver who doubled as a local tour guide, to take us to a few out of the way sites. Later that day, we ventured the 9km outside the city to the Killing Fields/Genocide museum and then to S-21

Detention Center. This must do, eye-opening educational experience pulled at our heartstrings and gave way to understanding the poverty stricken state the country is in today that will no doubt make you feel incredibly guilty you hired a private air conditioned van for $6 to take you there. 여행 첫 날 아 continued on p30

MORE THAN ONE WAY AROUND CAMBODIA

Our second night, we set off on the seven hour bus journey to reach our next local; the beloved Siem Reap. In the spirit of “making every moment count,” we had pre-booked a quad bike sunset tour for that evening through the highly recommended www.quadadventure-cambodia.com, before we arrived. We each had our own quad bike and followed a guide for a two hour magical ride through the small surround30

ing villages and rice paddy fields. The children, faces beaming with joy, that galloped to the road frantically waving and shouting “hello,” to greet us and ending up in traffic jam caused by a herd of water buffalo, made this $30 tour worth every seemingly over priced penny.

After reworking a plan of attack for our three day stay, we decided to start big. So the next morning we sprung out of bed at 4:30am, grabbed our packed breakfast boxes, jumped into our hired tuk tuk and headed off to catch the sunrise at the main majestic temple, Angkor Wat. Post sunrise and to confuse the travel packs, we set off to the outer ring of smaller temples and eventually made our way to the Sugar Cane Village and Landmine Museum. This tuk tuk tour took an entire after-

MORE THAN ONE WAY AROUND CAMBODIA noon and all for the bargain price of $15, separate of course from the $40 spent on the three day general entrance pass (one and seven day passes also available). Still not totally templed out we decided to head to a mountain top temple Phnom Kron, about 10k outside of the city where we had a bird’s eye view of Siem Reap while we watched the sunset.

Next, one of my hands down favorite days of all time, we took a 30 km bike tour organized by the popular Grasshopper Adventures to see the three main temples; Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Phrom. We cycled off the beaten path, saw monkeys, road on temple walls, explored the back trails of the beautiful Buddha faces of Bayon and of course admittedly managed to snap a few token shots doing our best Angelina Jolie. Renting

your own bike is a cheaper option, but investing $30 will give you lunch, let you be google maps free and fully able to enjoy the ride.

Our last day we left to exploring Siem Reap on foot and headed to Aqua--the local swim up bar for cocktails, meandered Pub Street, and took in the vibrant Night Market. All local staples that need to be sprinkled in between your temple touring

to do. No matter what ways you decide to see it; by plane, bus, tuk tuk, taxi, quad bike, cycle or your good ole’ fashion feet, Cambodia will capture your heart and have you wishing you didn’t have to leave.

MEANDERING AROUND SOUTH VIETNAM

Meandering Around Southern Vietnam

Written and photographed by Britney McSweeney Translated by the Jaguar

but don’t be fooled - motorbikes rule the road. Whether in the city’s bustling cement highway’s or on the rural, mountainous roads, motorbike drivers pack heavy loads - from flowers or fruit going to the market to refrigerators, balancing precariously throughout the sharp turns and sudden stops. It truly is a dance, and I must admit, I don’t know any of the steps.

W

hether you’re looking for a big city to get lost in or a beach retreat to escape to, Southern Vietnam does not disappoint. With Korea’s bitter winter in full swing, I wanted a retreat that was hot - not cool or even warm. For one week, I wanted to forget what cold even felt like. Ho Chi Minh City, still known by the locals as Saigon, provided exactly that- the kind of heat you feel through your shoes pounding on the pavement and radiating from the buildings.

Vietnam is packed. Although Saigon’s population density doesn’t compare to Seoul’s, the streets feel far more crowded and rushed, due to the huge motorbike presence. Helmet laws are strictly enforced and bikes generally stay off of the sidewalk while in motion at least,

That said, I made the decision not to rent a motorbike and drive on my own, relying instead on Easy Riders. This is a group of Vietnamese guys on motorbikes that give guided tours around the country. I met our guides while wandering around Dalat early in the morning. They agreed to take us on a full day tour around Dalat’s countryside for 20 USD, we threw on our helmets and were off within minutes. The biggest benefit of using a guide is the ability to see sights you couldn’t otherwise due to direction issues, dangerous roads, or the language barrier. We were taken to ethnic minority villages, unadvertised mountains and temples, and hole-in-the-wall restaurants with some of the best food I’ve had in my life. It is truly an experience you cannot replicate by simply renting a motorbike on your own.

An added benefit, you get an insightful peak into the local culture, provided only by hours spent with a fluent English speaker. We were told about local customs, from marriage norms to harvesting coffee beans. As my tour guide enthusiastically explained, southern Vietnamese people, especially those living outside of Saigon, love foreigners and appreciate their tourism. And of course, he was right - I was welcomed graciously into homes and village restaurants, given service and discounts readily, and generally treated as a guest.

MEANDERING AROUND SOUTH VIETNAM

For a beautiful, nearly empty beach close to Saigon, head to Vung Tau. It was a prominent French port, and the architecture still reflects that today. The tour companies will not recommend it to you, because it is so easy to get to that you can get there independently. Just head to the Hydrofoil Station on the Saigon River; there are plenty of companies with boats leaving all of the time. The beach is covered in perfect, twisting spiral shells I couldn’t help but collect. The best part of a deserted beach is the cheap lounge chairs and beachside beer service. Make sure you look up and see the giant statue of Jesus on your way out!

My friend and I were so impressed by our guides expertise and service that we opted to skip the sleeper bus to Mui Ne, and paid 70 USD to have them drive us instead. The Mekong River Delta is a short trek out of Saigon, and it’s a must-see. Tour groups can take you for a day or more, and are as cheap as 15 USD a day. The small towns and villages are draped over rivers punctuated with bridges of all sizes. Rivers are bustling with boats; the rowers seem to race one another, eager to drop off tourists and start their trip again. I must admit, as lush and beautiful as it is, the Delta is crawling with

MEANDERING AROUND SOUTH VIETNAM tourists. It’s definitely worth the visit to see the rows of boats, each busting at the seams with fruit, selling to tourists and other boats. The vibrantly painted boats each have a set of painted eyes for the sake of a superstition in the Delta. The experience is nothing short of unique.

It would be a crime to write about Vietnam without bringing up the food. Ho Chi Minh City is said to have great food, and the dishes were memorable, but to truly taste the spirit of the country, you have to get out of the cities and experience the authentic cuisine. My advice? Get out of your comfort zone - don’t pass up the dish with cobra or elephant fish, and if you hate it, well, there is always the cheap Saigon beer!

ADVERTORIAL - NEW YORK DENTAL

An Immediate Implant Procedure Written by Yoon Hongsik / Translated by Hyunseung Lee

A

s there are some easy ways to access medical information from various media outlets, the general public already knows a great deal of knowledge about implant procedures. On the other hand, there are some people who are confused precisely because we are living in a deluge of information. For that reason, my lecture is about understanding 'immediate implant installation' which has been advertised by many dental clinics recently and issued in applicable cases.

The immediate implant installation is classified under 2 headings. The first is when temporary teeth are made after the implant procedure and are functional enough to chew due to the immediate loading of the teeth. The other is associated with implants that are just for esthetic satisfaction. 40

-I wish to eat food straight after an implant operation

Generally, the immediate implant installations that are advertised in dental clinics are promoting the latter process. Following the procedure, the surgery is hardly noticeable as the implant is installed in the anterior side with the temporary teeth immediately made and fitted. There is no success rate difference from a general

medical treatment (no temporary teeth for 3-6 months after procedure) because the titanium screws, "implants,” are gently pressed into the bone while the patient chews for a 3-6 month period while the temporary teeth binds with the jaw. However, the teeth shouldn't touch each other during chewing during the strict reshaping process.

The other method of immediate installation (called immediate loading) is more difficult than the previous one mentioned. However, the benefits are that patients are able chew immediately after the surgery. Scientific data has been collected since the mid/late 1990s yet, early stage procedures called, "Blade implant," had been administered as early as the late 1970s. However, the success rate was low because it was based on clinical trials. In a more recent

ADVERTORIAL - NEW YORK DENTAL study, this procedure has proved to assured patients of a success rate of over 95% when the case is correctly chosen by a trained practitioner. The following conditions are strictly needed for the immediate installation: 1. Cross-arch stabilization 2. An implant longer than 10 mm 3. A secure fixation in the early stage

Patients who want to have an implant procedure normally only consider the cost, but, in reality, implant procedures are treatments of complex fields such as; surgical, periodontia, prosthodontia, orthodontia. Therefore, the doctors involved must be more skilled than in other fields. In other words, a long course of study is required to be considered a skilled enough doctor to perform these procedures. When a trip to South-East Asia is planned, it’s often Thailand which stands out - the legendary full –moon party, the sin city reputation of Bangkok and, of course, the lady boys your mother will undoubtedly warn you about. In the last few years, however, the stock of Vietnam has risen faster than any other country in the region and the country is now a must-see on the South-East Asian backpacking circuit. The diversity the country offers is unique; to experience all Vietnam has to offer often requires an amount of time few travellers have. For so many reasons, Vietnam is somewhere everyone plans to return to.

tainly compelling. 1 in 2 residents possess a bike, a figure which would surely be higher if not for the improbable number of family members loaded onto every vehicle – up to 5! The country once dominated by the French retains its colonial atmosphere and the quaint cafes provide an excellent viewing platform for the madness of the bikers who completely ignore all traffic light direction.

In the far north of the country lies Hanoi, the city famous for its traffic. While Rome and other cities are derided for air pollution, it is said by every visitor to Vietnam’s second city that the motorbike traffic is if not charming, then cer42

Hanoi also offers visitors a chance to see much revered former President Ho Chi Minh embalmed in his own mausoleum. Uncle Ho, as he’s known to the Vietnamese, adorns every monetary note and his portrait takes pride of place in many homes. On reflection, this might all be a way of apologizing to the ghost of Uncle as his dying wish was to be cremated!

often cited as one of the modern wonders of the world. Roughly 2000 limestone formations provide the backdrop for the daily cruise trips which depart from the mainline. Booking a 2 night cruise is vital in order to sample the kayaking, swimming and fishing on offer. One part of the bay not to be missed is the trip to one of the floating villages – an utterly surreal experience which will have you wondering where the pub is and if residents really ask their family members to “swim down the shop” when they’re in need of essentials?

choosing the regular spots. This is no bad thing: some of Thailand’s most popular beaches are starting to resemble everything bad about Spanish resorts. In addition, in central Vietnam lies the border region at the heart of the conflict which ravaged throughout the 1970s and a visit to the towns of Hue and Hoi An is worthwhile. On a less savage note, Hoi An specializes in the sale of the cheapest quality suits in the world and if you’re sticking around for a few days you’ll be able to design your threads and strut on to your next location over-dressed and, probably, over-confident.

clear to anyone visiting. The War Remnants Museum is a chilling expose of the barbarity of the conflict in the country and the photos on show hold nothing back in displaying the effect on innocent civilians and combat troops alike.

VIETNAM were vital in repelling the US Army through various forms of ground traps and tunnels running 75 miles long. Bizarrely, and perhaps inappropriately, visitors can shoot war-era guns at the shooting range at the end. Now there's a strange itinerary: stories of jungle warfare, flesh eating rodents and torture followed by unloading a full submachine gun clip into a target in the distance.

The Mekong Delta is an altogether less violent trip and it's the best place to sample genuine Vietnamese culture well away from the tourist hotspots. From floating markets, to coconut processing and traditional music, it is a welcome change from the hard graft of the Cu Chi trip.

It would be impossible to cover all the charms of Vietnam in one article and in that lies the glory of the country - even if you only have time to scratch the surface, you'll still sample people as friendly as they come, spectacular scenery and a troubled history followed by a remarkable rise from the ashes. Vietnam is a hotspot in the making, get there before the crowds!

MANNAM 10K WALK Written by Gary Lynn / Photo by Sunny

O

ur friends at Mannam (Daegu) have started another cultural event, The Korean Food Experience. That's where all of the volunteers meet to enjoy authentic Korean food at a local restaurant. The restaurant of choice this time - What? Samgyeopsal. Yep, that's right What? This place was crowded from the time we got there to the time we left. Understandable because the food and service was, as we say in America "Off the chain." - (Great). I'm told that What? is famous for their peppered pork - among other things. One of the best places to eat in Daegu. Hard to find though, off a back street and down an alley but when you find it - TOUCHDOWN. The group of us totalled over 20 and What? had no problem seating us. While we sat and ate more and more people showed up. As soon as one table cleared, it was resat in just moments. A place with good food can do that. After we finished, we talked for a moment but was asked to leave to make room for more customers. It was a great time with great people. There are more events with

Mannam coming up. Along with another Korean Food Experience (a steak place this time), they will have a 10km walk campaign on April 14. The walk is a global awareness campaign that will happen simultaneously all over Korea. Daegu, Seoul, Kwangju, Busan and so with ALL Mannam organizations. The theme, 10km In Their Shoes, Love the Earth, Love People. The venue will be at Duryu Park Dalseogu, Daegu and will start at 1pm with registration and a message delivering hope. At 2pm, a performance from local talent and at 2:30pm the 10km walk begins. The closing ceremony will be from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. There will be two courses (A&B) people will be divided into these groups. Through Mannam's 10km walk, we will take time to observe and experience how giving of ourselves is human nature. We will also

hold a ceremony to encourage others to get actively involved in in loving and protecting our fellow man. Imagine what you would do if a natural distaster hits a peacful village you are living in and takes away your house and family. Countless people around the world are fighting with fears of loneliness, coldness, famine and sickness. Mannam, knowing no borders and no boundaries, aspires to reach out to all people affected by natural disasters and encourage them with a hope to get back up and start again. Please be the deliverer of a small but big act of love for the entire human race by participating in this event. This touching message from the particpants of the 10km walk will be presented for those who are hurt by natural disasters - “When Light meets Light - There is Victory, is Mannam's motto . The Mannam people are so friendly and the group is getting bigger and bigger each month. Every time we meet, it's like we found a lost good friend.

WORK AND PLAY IN OZ

Work and Play in the land of OZ Written and photographed by Rui Lee

“This plane will be arriving at the Brisbane airport shortly." The captain said through the speaker. I've been awake, sitting on the plane, in eager anticipation for 13 hours. Generally, people only know about the Opera House in Sydney, Australia. Other than that, Australia is the sixth biggest country, first biggest island, and the only continent which is a country as well. They have the biggest coral reef in the world, the Great Barrier Reef and also a very famous for the rock, Ayers Rock.

When I was 25, I put myself on a plane to Australia. Looking for an answer to a question, "Can I survive in an English speaking world?" I thought I would be able to gain a better idea of who I am if I went down and lived and worked in Australia. I got a working holiday visa in 2 weeks, got everything ready which took less than a month and off I went.

About working holiday visa? -If you are granted this visa you can: •enter Australia within 12 months of grant •stay up to 12 months •leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid •work in Australia for up to six months with each employer •study for up to four months. • • • • • •

HYOSUNG HOSPITAL

WORK AND PLAY IN OZ

Most of the cities in OZ are located near beaches. Surfing, swimming and partying with hot bikini girls is part of the life style every weekend. There are also nude beaches, if you are looking for some freedom, go for it. The residents who I met were very kind and relaxed unlike Koreans. I've been used to the "Hurry, hurry culture in Korea," so there were some things I couldn't understand,

For instance, our public transportation has no consideration for challenged people. They hardly go out like for events. But in OZ, when the low-floor buses arrived, drivers would come down to escort them, but no one complained 54

because you were so used to it. The first Christmas in OZ was very special. I usually celebrated Christmas in cold and snowy Daegu, so partying on the beach with people in swimsuits and bikinis was awesome!

I cannot forget to mention about street performers. Street performers also get state government help. There are painters, singers, musicians, sculptors and performance artists. I suggest heading down there if you have a special talent to share with people. Plus, you get paid to do something you love! It's not so hard to get a job if you speak English well, but it's hard to get one where they treat you as they treat their own residents. Australia has very high-prices and high-wages at the same time. If you take the Big-Mac index challenge, in OZ you can buy 4 Big-Macs after working just 1 hour. In Korea, you can only buy one Big-Mac after working only 1 hour. Wow, what a big difference! After I came back, lots of people and friends of mine asked me what the biggest difference between OZ and Korea was while I was living there and all I could do was smile.

WORK AND PLAY IN OZ

I was worried about my future before I left. I thought I would be living a meager life, barely getting by. But I had a great time and found that work wasn't hard to find. For now I am so excited about what I am doing and what I want to do. One of my life mentors, Biya Han gave a lecture and asked one of the students, "What's your dream job?" She hit his back really hard after he answered, "I want to become a government employee." How many adventures have you taken in your whole life? Early training means more than late learning. It's never too late. Get a visa, pack your bags and GO Have some fun. Otherwise you might regret missing your chance at finding out something special about yourself in a distant land.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu. A perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Next, swing by the minature golf course and Suseong Land. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to descrribe the experience.

KOREAN ARCHERY http://www.flickr.com/photos/singapore2010/

Countdown to the London Olympics: The story of how one of Korea’s Gold Medal prospects is looking to defy the odds

http://www.flickr.com/photos/billhails 70

KOREAN ARCHERY Written by Kenneth Quillinan

W

hen I asked my students which Korean athlete is likely to win a medal at the upcoming London Olympics, they all came back with the same two answers;the notorious figure skater,Kim Yu Na and swimmer Park Tae-Hwan. It seems little is known here about how successful the Korean Archers have been in recent years, and notably the remarkable story of one athlete in particular. Im Dong-Hyun, a twenty-five year old archer born in Cheong Ju is widely considered as the best archer in the world. He has two gold medals from the team events held in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. He also holds the current world record for 72 arrows, with a score of 687 out of 720.When it comes to this sport I am far from an expert, but when I read his remarkable story my interest suddenly piqued. According to the Korean Archery Federation, Im is legally blind, with a vision of 20/100 in his right eye and 20/200 in his left. He has described the rainbow colors of an archery board as looking like ‘’different types of paint being dropped in water. The lines are blurred.’’ Im began to lose his his vision as a teenager, but by then he had already established himself on the archery scene as one of the best around. Instead of having the necessary surgery to address his problem, Im has learnt to ‘feel’ each shot with his body, training his muscles to be phenomenally consistent when lining up for every shot. For the past two decades, Korea has dominated the archery world in both the male and female categories. They currently hold every world record available in both the men and women’s individual and team events. It looks like this trend is likely to continue with Im being enlisted as the favorite to take the gold at this summer’s London Olympics. Currently, there are almost 350 regional teams and over 1,500 active archers in Korea. With such a great interest here in this sport, it is difficult to bet against Korea continuing to dominate for the foreseeable future.

Indo Bang Rangi - 3F Restaurant

Sanjay welcomes you! Renovated and redesigned last year, this Indian restaurant is famous for it’s curries. The chef is from India and speaks English very well. Plus, he’s super friendly and will answer all your existential Indian food questions. The restaurant is located on the 3rd floor right across from Kyungdae Buk Moon (north gate). Check the Kyungdae Compass map on p64 for directions. 11am - 10pm everyday (except major holidays)

Maya - 2F Restaurant

A wood-fired tandoor oven seeps into your senses as you enter the door to this fantastic Indian/Nepali restaurant. Relatively new to Daegu, about 2 years old now, this restaurant is a great escape from the retro-urban decor that most Daegu restaurants display. A cozy interior with exotic tapestries of the far east adorning the walls. Reasonable prices and great Thali sets round out this establishment. Check the Kyungdae Compass map on p64 for directions. 11:00am to 11:00pm everyday (closed Mondays)

Sang-in Dong The Holy Grill - Delivery in Daegu

Nepalese/Indian

Western

The Canadian owner of Daegu’s legendary downtown restaurant lived in Sangin Dong when he first arrived in Daegu back in 2000. Eleven years later, he’s opened his second location back in the neighbourhood where it all started. Epic hot sandwiches like the Philly Cheese Steak, Bacon & Cheese Holy Cow burger, Santo Burrito or the best selling Cajun Smothered Chicken. Eat it, take out or have it delivered to your school or home.
