Enjoy Authentic Indian
-Pakistani Cuisine in Daegu Food in an International University Setting Written by Katy Babiarz / Photos by Ivan Broida
Whether you are a newbie to Daegu, or an experienced Daeguian, have I got a special treat for you! Those in the Kyungpook National University North Gate (경대북문) area are the luckiest, because they can enjoy the New Aladdin Restaurant more often. If not, then no worries. There are numerous buses that can get you there fairly easily (more about that later). What is so great about the Aladdin Restaurant you might be asking? I’ll tell you, it’s the best Indian-Pakistani food I’ve ever had. Rashid Ahmed (along with his brother, 8

whom is fresh to Daegu and his Korean wife) strives for excellence in creating the most delicious dishes. He and his brother, Shafiq, have more than 20 years of experience between the two of them in cooking traditional Indian-Pakistani food. The first experience you receive is when you are walking up to the third floor restaurant. The stairways are lined with gorgeous photographs of the people and sceneries of India and Pakistan. Then, as you walk into the restaurant, the sweet and spicy aromas of curry and spices

permeate the air. The dÊcor is simple, yet vibrant and lively, with colorful hookahs, golden palace statues, and beautiful tapestries covering the walls. Curious about what the delicious foods are? Words can’t fully describe the amazingness we tasted on our visit to Aladdin Restaurant. But, here it goes. We started out with the Somosa (2 pieces for 4,000 won), which is something I’ve never tasted before, but was pleasantly surprised by. Two crispy, yet fluffy, pieces of pastry come filled with onions, potatoes, and Indian spices served along-side two completely different sauces; a creamy, spicy mint sauce and a sweet, tangy red chili sauce. Then, we were served the pretty simple, but rather tasty Special Tandoori Chicken Salad (5,000 won). Sliced pieces of Tandoori chicken are served on top of a bed of lettuce and drizzled with honey mustard dressing. This is great for just a light snack to hold you over until the next part of your meal comes! Now for the real treat! The entrees that were served to us were the Tandori Chicken (half 8,000 won and full 16,000 won) and a variety of brightly colored -continued on p10-

curries (12,000 won). And of course, no curry is complete without some nan (plain-2,000 won / butter-2,500 won / garlic-3,000 won / potato paratha-4,000 won). Palak Paneer (green) is a non-spicy, vegetarian curry made of creamy spinach with soft cubes of cheese floating about. The Bombay Chicken (orange) is also a non-spicy curry consisting of chicken, onion, tomato, and capsicum topped with a sliced hard-boiled egg. Next was the Murg Mukkni (white). This curry is a sweet creamy, buttery curry with chicken, coconut and spices with raisins sprinkled on top. Finally is the Maddrassi (red), which is a smooth tomato paste-based curry with tomatoes, chicken and lamb. All of these curries are served in beautiful metal bowls with a candle burning underneath to keep them warm. At the end of our meal, there wasn’t a drop of curry left in our bowls; further proving how top-notch these curries are. To get to this gem, find your way to the North Gate of KNU by taking one of the many buses (305, 410, 503, 706, 719, 937, 동구2) OR just show the taxi driver this: “경대북문 가 주세요.” (“Take me to KNU North Gate, please.”) Once you’ve trekked over to KNU, the
restaurant is located on the opposite side of the campus above Tous Less Jours on the 3rd floor. You really can’t miss the bright green signs guiding you into this authentic dining experience. In closing, Rashid wants everybody to know that you should experience his restaurant once, and you’ll love it. He also wanted to pass along that you can check out his menu and leave any comments or suggestions for him and his staff on Facebook (Aladdin Restaurant). He moved his restaurant to KNU in hopes of bring his non-fusion cuisine to more foreigners who desire it. Also, if you speak English, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, or Urdu, well then you can order successfully at this restaurant! After class, on your to COSTCO, or just because, come to the New Aladdin Restaurant seven days a week, anytime between 11 am to 11 pm to be engulfed by the aromas, sights, and tantalizing tastes of India and Pakistan!

BIG DAY SOUTH Audio & Visual Festival Written by Ali Safavi / translated by Yujeong Lee
In the last year or so, there has been a noticeable push in Daegu to support and encourage not yet established local art, music, and other creative ventures, from within the city itself. Some, who have found themselves in Daegu for more than a minute, have decided that one does not have to live in South Korea as a tourist, a simple observer, but that you can follow your passions and get involved with your surroundings without any boundaries of nationality or language. .
On Saturday April 26th, [b]racket Magazine, I Like Many Records 20

The ‘Big Day South’ festival will bring together artists, musicians, dancers and spoken word from Ulsan, Daegu and Busan to play at two important venues in Daegu: 4월 26일 토요일, [b]racket 매거진, I Like Many Records 그리고 Angle 매거진이 함께 남부지방 최고의 재능을 선보이는 페스티벌을 개최한 다. ◈ Social Market is a shop full

iconic venue for live music in downtown Daegu. Their stage is often graced by the presence of many local and international acts as well as also being a popular drinking hole for foreigners and Koreans alike. During the Big Day South festival, Club Urban will play host to an assortment of acts, including music and spoken word from Ulsan, a DJ, a dancer and an indie band from Busan as well as Daegu acts, Dogstar/도그스타, November On Earth, Colours, The Curses (ex. Lady Winchester) and the legendary Yamagata Tweakster (who is the quintessential Korea experience). To finishing things off, we will have some of our city’s hardworking charities raising awareness and selling some delicious cakes. With the Big Day South festival, we

want to showcase the creativity, talent and beauty outside of Seoul, to challenge the notion that in Korea, if something cannot be found in the capital then it probably doesn’t exist anywhere in the country. Whilst it is true that for now, Seoul is the heart of many interesting cultural happening in South Korea, the belief we are left barren in the southern cities is a false one. [b]racket Magazine, I Like Many Records and Angle Magazine feel that a festival would be a great way to disprove that assumption. I Like Many Records , Angle
We also did not want to exclude any nationality from this event but rather try, as we do in our daily ventures, to bridge the gap between Korean and foreigners. Both groups have an immense amount of talent and a language barrier need not hold us back from enjoying or engaging in the creative endeavors of either group.

Backtrack to one year ago. I was sitting on a park bench with my girlfriend under a peaceful canopy of trees. with my own eyes.
Our train began to slow. Is this it? I pressed close to the window, stretching my gaze forward. A scattered line of cherry blossom trees passed my view. Outside, a few people ambled along by the tracks, posing for pictures with the flowers. We seemed to be entering a small town. The line of trees began to grow denser, forming a broken wall of pink flowers. More and more people filled up along the tracks, pausing to watch our train pass by. And suddenly, with a nonchalance that matched the leisured slowness of our train, the pink saplings gave way to their taller, grander elders. What was once a level view now extended upwards above us. Long braches adorned with cherry blos-continued on p24-

It was like everything you’ve read, seen, or heard about romance combined into one epic scene.

So this is what it’s all about. As the display of brilliance passed by in a slow dreamlike gait, my eyes struggled to take everything in. Along with the intricate web of flowers over our heads, the crowd had swelled to hundreds. Many people outside stopped what they were doing to admire the procession of our train through the shower of pink petals. I’m not sure who was more impressed with what they saw, those inside the train or those along the tracks. It was such a picturesque moment.
That was just the beginning of our day. In the next 5 hours I reconciled on every level with the city that had last year been marked an “incomplete” on my South Korea bucket list. We climbed the 365 steps to the view tower at Jehwangsan Park and saw the city rightfully
draped in its blotches of pink. We held hands and acted like a couple as we walked along Yeojwa Stream, the location of Korea’s “Romance Bridge”. And as the day winded down and the sun began its amber dip, we walked for a mile up the same tracks our train had come down earlier, once again searching for that magical pink oasis.

Overcoming Culture Shock with Empathy Daegu's Best Guesthouse Written by Jane Kim / Photos provided by Empathy Guesthouse
It’s likely that upon arrival to Korea, many foreigners found some things about life here quite confusing. Take discarding food waste for example. Or making online purchases and bank transfers with a secret card. Or the crazy election campaign trucks that blare popular songs with candidates’ names in the lyrics. Even for those of us familiar with life in a modern society, life in a new culture and society can be overwhelming. However, there are others in Daegu who frequently share this culture shock, and they aren’t foreigners. They’re actually Korean citizens, and they speak Korean. They look Korean, too. This community of over 26

26,000 is a special group of people. And they originate from above the 38th parallel: they are North Korean defectors. There are currently approximately 850 North Korean defectors living in Daegu and Gyeongsan. Many may find this number surprisingly large, but it is less than 3% of the entire community in Korea. They have all made the long journey southward in dangerous conditions and have generally sacrificed much to do so. Thus, once they are able to finally enter into South Korean society, they are simultaneously filled with ex-

citement and worries about their future in a hyper-competitive society. The government provides what may initially seem like a generous resettlement package, but the reality that awaits them is often grave, as they face serious barriers to resettlement in the form of loneliness, physical and psychological health issues, culture shock, and difficulties in the labor market due to a lack of basic skills. Learning to maneuver in a capitalistic and democratic society is a no easy task. Enter the Empathy for a Better World Foundation. Empathy, a nonprofit organization that manages the Center for North Korean Defectors (CNKD), assists North Korean defectors on their journey by providing them comprehensive social welfare services. CNKD, which has its roots in poverty issues in Daegu, has assisted North Korean defectors in the region since 2003 and develops programs to address the needs of this population with various public and nonprofit institutions, including the Daegu Metropolitan City Government, Ministry of Unification, Ministry of Employment and Labor, the U.S.
Embassy Seoul, and North Korean Refugees Foundation. Programs currently offered include employment counseling and assistance, physical and mental health assistance, academic support, South-North integration programs, general resettlement assistance, and the Daegu Hana Center, which provides an 80-hour local community adjustment program for newly arrived residents. In particular, Empathy is invested in many academic programs for youngsters as well as older university students, and this takes place in both its afterschool center in Sangin-dong and center downtown. The downtown center is Empathy’s newest addition, and houses Café Empathy, the Baeoomtuh (continuing education center), and the Empathy Guesthouse in a five-story brick building just off of Jungangro Station exit 1. This center is the next step towards realizing sustainability and social integration in Daegu, as it provides a safe community for people of various walks of life. Daegu Medical Tourism in the Spotlight Submitted by Daegu Medical Tourism Board / Proofread by Katherine Kirk
◈ Medical tourism increases 2.5 times in 3 years Daegu’s medical tourism is showing a substantial amount of growth. According to the city’s government, the number of foreign patients increased to 7,117 in 2012. This is 2.5 times more than that of 2009. This year Daegu is pushing Medical Tourism into the spotlight with multiple specialized projects such as the Western-Oriental Medical Center and the Kyungbook University Hospital Hair Transplantation Center, headed by Jung Chul Kim, a leading authority on hair transplantation. A combined hotel and hospital, the Meditel, will also be completed. The city is also making a remarkable effort to guarantee the quality of Daegu’s medical tourism. In the beginning of March, the Daegu city government and Meritz fire & marine insurance company signed an MOU guaranteeing compensation for foreign patients in the event of damage resulting from medical accidents. As a result, foreign medical tourists are eligible for insurance benefits from every hospital in Daegu. ◈ Private enterprises lead Daegu’s Medical Tourism Medical institutions in Daegu are working hard to 32

promote Daegu’s bright future as a Medical Tourism destination. The Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee in particular is leading the medical tourism marketing drive. The committee began as volunteers in local hospitals in January 2011. They established the Daegu Medical Tourism Information Center at Novotel, located in downtown Daegu. Lately, Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee has focused on building overseas information centers. Five information centers promoting Daegu’s medical tourism have been established in Guiyang, Shenzhen, Qingdao, and Shenyang in China as well as Hanoi, Vietnam. Furthermore, local hospitals in Daegu will provide high quality medical staff and technology support to the Philippines, Laos, and Ningbo, China. ◈ About the Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee The Daegu Medical Tourism Promotion Committee is a non-profit organization established to promote the competitiveness and quality of the local medical services and the medical tourism industry, and to promote the image of Daegu as a medical tourism city.

How to Control Your Allergies 5 Essential Tips to Help You This Spring Written and photographed by Dr. Shin
This spring is expected to be three things: cold then warm and dry, which is bad news for seasonal rhinitis and allergy sufferers. Here are five ways recommended by me, Dr. Shin, to keep allergies under control this 2014 calendar year:
and reduces the levels of phlegm. Both are very helpful when yellow dust gets into your sinuses and makes a mess. I also recommend a program of acupuncture with Korean herbal medicine as you need to create balance in your body in order to recover naturally.
Keep pollen and dust out It seems like a no brainer but inviting yellow dust and pollen into your home will only increase the severity of the symptoms. Have you ever wondered why you sneezed at night after having your window open during the day? The best thing to use is an HEPA capable air filter, which can trap 99.9% of pollen and the fine yellow dust particles. Another simple trick is heading right into the shower and washing your hair when you come home to remove any pollen and dust. This also means avoid air drying clothes during the peak of the spring season, as clothing and bedding can become pollen and yellow dust magnets.
Essential oils are another thing I love to use on my patients for allergies and nasal congestion from pollen, yellow dust or just a simple cold. Hoo Clinic uses peppermint essential oils before treatment but there's no reason you can't use it at home when you feel stuffy. Peppermint is an uplifting, refreshing scent that really goes to work on rhinitis and congestion. That's why the artificial stuff is used in so many over-the-counter medicines and nasal rubs like VICKS. I personally also like ginger essential oil as it clears any congestion and rhinitis like no other. It has anti-microbial properties and is great for the body. For those kitchen warriors, you know how powerful ginger can be as a seasoning or when you touch the bare slices on your hand. The oil concentrate is the next best thing.
Needle and Oils Allergies cause an increase of mucous production, and cleaning the nasal passages of excess mucous and allergens can offer symptom relief. A 2009 study in the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy reported that acupuncture significantly increased nasal air flow and decreased nasal obstruction in patients with chronic nasal congestion, sinusitis and rhinitis. I don't need a study to tell me what I already know. When I treat my patients with nasal acupuncture, they tell me they feel reborn. Nasal acupuncture also relieves inflammation 34

Try a local Korean produce spring detox No, this isn't Hoo Clinic's famed 30 day detox program but a program you can do with local Daegu and Gyeongsang produce. Improving the function of the liver, kidneys and digestive process improves the body’s ability to eliminate waste products and can make you less reactive to allergens such as tree pollen and yellow dust. Traditional Korean medicine believes herbal teas such as omija (the delicious five-flavour tea made from

small orange seed-like berries) are great for flushing toxins out of the body. Omijacha is one of my personal favorite Korean teas because, hot or cold, you never know the flavor you're going to get! What else does Korea, Daegu and Gyeongsang have to offer for our Korean Rites of Spring detox? Uiseong garlic is prized in these parts for being pungent, high quality and some of the best in all of Korea. The next would be miyeok (a kind of seaweed soup popular with new moms). This tasty soap provides a detoxification effect and tons of nutrition, hence why new moms eat it constantly for them and their offspring. Minari (a Chungdo, near Daegu specialty) is a leafy green vegetable and in season this time of year. You will see restaurants combining it with samgyeopsal and touting its yellow dust fighting abilities. There's no evidence pork helps the body excrete yellow dust but pork farmers definitely love this time of year. From down on the western Jeollado area, comes Boseong green tea. Green tea is also believed to help remove the heavy metals, which are often found in yellow dust and the fine particulate matter in the air. Drink and eat up!
Control Histamines Allergy reactions are caused by histamines, which are released by mast cells in the body. Antihistamines such Zytrec work by blocking this release of histamine from these cells. If you’re looking for a natural substitute, I recommend eating your alkaloids such as onions and garlic (shout out to Uiseong!). Quercetin is a flavonoid originally found in foods such as apple, garlic and onions. It helps stabilize mast cells so they're less likely to produce histamines. Make a green tea eye mask Soak your green tea bags in warm or cold water, and apply them to the eyes for a few minutes. Very handy for days when the dust accumulation or pollen count is in the red 400-800 ppm areas. Green tea is an anti-inflammatory and has a lot of antioxidants so it can help calm down the inflammatory reaction that’s causing symptoms. It also has anti-aging properties so you can help keep those eyes in fluttering, great shape. A great two for one holistic health combination!

Chic Couple's Family Planning Teamwork From Planning Pregnancy to Postpartum Care Written by Weum Mal Do / Proofread by Sean DS / translated by Sun Lee
Obstetrics and gynecology hospitals today are not only places for medical procedures such as delivery and surgery. They also offer services for the family throughout the entire pregnancy, including prenatal and postpartum care for the child, mother, and father, lectures on health, and cultural education and events. Therefore, it would only be wise for a soon-to-be-married couple to carefully choose a suitable clinic and doctor and to establish rapport with them for happy and healthy family planning. Rather than hesitating, it is time for family planning with a specialized hospital.

As average marriage age is increasing, the age of first-time mothers is increasing as well. It has become a social issue as advanced maternal age could result in infertility, premature births and deformity in babies. As for infertility, couples who are not able to conceive after at least one year of unprotected intercourse may be experiencing primary infertility. In the past, women were solely considered to be responsible. However, we now know that 40% of infertility cases are due to female-specific causes, 40% are due to male-specific and 20% are due to a combination. Therefore, it is important for a couple to work together to treat their condition. Generally speaking, 70-80% of primary infertility cases are curable. Primary infertility tests for women include pelvic ultrasounds, hormone tests of ovarian function, hysterotubographies, and endometrial biopsies. After the tests, the treatments begin at the onset of the
next menstrual cycle. However, the tests may require more than one month because they are based around the menstrual cycle. The tests for men include sperm testing after two to three days of abstinence. Advanced maternal age may cause medical issues not only for the mother but also for the baby, so it is recommended that the mother see a doctor for a pre-conception test. If a woman is having sudden symptoms of worsening cramps, changes in volume of menstrual flow or irregular menstruation cycle during pregnancy planning, she must consult with a doctor for a pre-conception test.
"Note: About Pre-conception and Postpartum Care" 1.
1. Pre-conception Tests A 'Pre-conception test' is an essential test for a healthy mother and fetus. It generally includes an anemia examination, urine test, blood-type test, hepatitis B test, thyroid gland function test, measles immunity test and uterus and breast ultrasounds for cancer examination. It can also include syphilis and AIDS tests as they can cause congenital malformation. Severe obesity and an irregular menstruation cycle can make it difficult to predict ovulation, so it is important to prepare the body through regular exercise and a well-balanced diet, as well as consult with a doctor to check ovulation periods. If a woman is not immune to measles or hepatitis, she must test for antibodies before conception. Men are recommended to have a SA (Sperm Assay) test to evaluate number, structure, viscosity and mobility. It is also recommended to have hormone, urethritis and prostate examinations. 2.
2. Prenatal Tests Once pregnancy starts, a couple should work closely with their doctor. Besides basic blood tests and ultrasounds, two integrated blood tests and congenital anomaly tests are conducted, one between 10 to 12 weeks and the other between 16 to 18 weeks, which are 90 - 94% accurate. If diagnosed as a high-risk group patient, the mother should test her amniotic fluid for genetic disorders. Chorionic villus sam38
DAEGU COMPASS 2014.APRIL
pling between 10 to 12 weeks is another option, but due to risk is not conducted as a basic test. Between 20 to 24 weeks, the baby's physical appearance and organ structure can be tested and observed through 3D ultrasounds. Gestational diabetes screening should be conducted between 24 to 28 weeks and the mother should pay closer attention if she has a family member with diabetes. Older mothers have higher premature birth risk factors than younger ones. Therefore, they should prepare for these risks of premature contractions through cervical length scans and fetal movement scans. 3.
3. Antepartum Tests During the last month of pregnancy, a mother should undergo antepartum tests to prevent emergency situations or prepare for surgery.
4. Post Partum Care The six weeks after childbirth is the postpartum period, when the body heals and adjusts. It is also a time for the mother to bond with her baby. Therefore, psychological security and follow-up medical checkups are very important. Health is an crucial element of a happy family. When we are healthy, our family is happier. As life expectancy reaches 100 years old and the population ages, regular medical checkups are given more attention than ever. The most important issue is screening a disease early. The National Health Insurance Corporation(NHIC) is offering essential and basic medical tests and scanning throughout a lifetime, including infancy and middlescence, and early cancer screening to promote public health. It is very important to know which member of the family is eligible for which NHIC tests.

Vitiligo Painless Micropigmentation for Healthier Skin Submited by The Contour / Proofread by Sean DS / translated by Sun Lee
V
itiligo is a dermatological condition that causes depigmentation, with enlarged white patches of irregular shapes appearing on the skin. In modern medicine it remains a disease of unknown cause. However, because 30% of the patients have a family member with the same condition, genetic factors may play a role. Among possible causes are autoimmune disorder, neurogenic factors or self-destruction, while a convergence of theories is becoming predominant. Vitiligo is primarily a cosmetic issue, as white patches appear without itchiness. They are prominent on bony parts such as hands, feet, knees and elbows and around orifices such as eyes and mouth. Vitiligo is a relatively common condition that affects 0.5~2% of the total population, and 50% of cases develop before the age of twenty. The treatment methods usually include cosmetics and micropigmentation. Micropigmentation is a relatively comfortable method that is neither painful nor expensive and does not require surgical sedation or hospitalization. It camouflages the depigmented appearance by infusingartificial pigments into the epidermis. The Contour is a skincare clinic offering micropigmentation practiced by a certified practitioner using painless digital machines. In order to minimize the side-effects, the clinic practices safety

Gay, Geh, Gae, Gey? Netizens Poke Fun at Translation Written by Brian Van Hise
Foreigners living in Korea often take a stab at learning Korean. Like any other foreign language, one first must develop a solid understanding of the phonetics involved in the target language. As a native English speaker attending my first German class way back in high school, I realized that while the German alphabet was the same as the English one, there were a few adjustments. “W” was pronounced like “V” and “V” was pronounced like “F” and “F”... well “F” was still just plain old “F” in the end. So, for most of us learning Korean, we realize that the key is understanding Hangul, the Korean alphabet. And in that process, we may make notes or flash cards with the Roman alphabet to serve as hints or help guide us along the way until the Hangul letters and diphthong combinations themselves make sense. Most Korean books boast that learning Hangul doesn’t really take long, so most non-native speakers of Korean tend to 42

learn the alphabet with relative ease. What doesn’t typically happen though, is for foreigners to learn the Romanization of Hangul and never Hangul itself. The Romanization of letters serves merely as a stepping stone or as a way of making life easier for tourists visiting this country for a short period. So, while there is a “standard Romanization” that has been accepted for Hangul, most learners of the language will use their own shorthand to notate the pronunciations as they see fit. Well, here at the Daegu Compass, we ourselves ran into a funny little incident this past month. Our article “How to Order Food,” which has run on a single page near the back of every issue for the past two years, recently caused some buzz among Korean netizens. Someone had noticed we Romanized the word 개 (counter word) as “gay.” The standard Romanization would have been
Daegu Community - Gay, Geh, Gae, Gey?
http://daegucompass.com
“gae” but we chose “gay” two years ago with no other thought than it was the most basic/easiest pronunciation of the word 개. It could just as easily have been “geh” or “gey.” Kyung Hyang News, an agency that reports on hot internet topics in Korea, picked up on the midMarch trending item and called our managing editor Yuri Lee about the piece, asking if it was some kind of “homosexual code” or joke of some sort. Lee explained that it was simply for phonetic clarification among foreigners learning to speak Korean.
Ravioli, T-Bone Steak Gnocchi, Calzone
The misunderstanding comes in the Konglish pronunciation of “gay” in Korea (which is 게이 or “gayee”). Thus saying “gay-ee” for 개 would seem very strange to Korean eyes, though the original English pronunciation of “gay” as 개 is suitable for our purposes. Either way, we here at the Compass had a good laugh at the silliness of the situation...and you’ll notice we’ve decided to keep our guide untouched, as no one from our wonderful network of readers has spoken up about it otherwise. 43
An Afternoon with "The Phantom” Written by Gary Lynn / Photos provided by The Phantom of the Opera Production Team / Translated by Yujeong Lee
On Saturday, March 8th, my friends and I took the green line to see “The Phantom of the Opera." Once we arrived at the Keimyung University stop, we took exit 7 and we were only a hundred yards from the Art Center. Walking up to the theatre, we were impressed by the building and the banners that celebrate the 25th anniversary of "The Phantom of the Opera,” Broadway's longest running musical. It has been produced in 145 cities, in 27 counties and celebrated its 10,000th performance on January 11, 2012. It is estimated that more than 130 million people have seen Phantom and the total worldwide gross is now in excess of $5.6 billion. The box office revenues are higher than any other film or stage play in history – including AVATAR, Titanic, and Star Wars.

To say the show was AWESOME is an understatement. Between the music, the transitions, and the special effects, this show was SUPERB! At the end of the performance, I spoke with the production manager Mr. John Chang-Hyun and requested an interview the cast members. With his help, I was able to interview Mr. Brad Little (who plays the Phantom), Miss Claire Lyon (who plays Christine Daae’) and Mr. Phillip Godawa the Associate Director. from a grand stage to an underground lair in seconds. I was most impressed by the way; they made the stage look like a boat was floating on the water. Real cool!

She has not had a chance to see Daegu so I gave her a Daegu Compass, so they could explore and see what restaurants and other things Daegu had to offer.
While talking with Brad, Claire, and Phillip I felt a sense of camaraderie. Phillip went on to explain that everyone from the light assistant, to the wardrobe department, to the performer themselves all had deep pride and passion for the performance of the Phantom. There are 130 cast, crew, and orchestra members directly involved in each performance. Each performance has 230 costumes , 14 dressers , 120 automated cues , 22 scene changes , 281 candles and uses 250kg of dry ice and 10 fog and smoke machines.

I have seen but by the theatre staff. I spoke to an usher Annabelle Min Jung, who is a senior at Keimyung University and who has been working at the Art Center since its opening five years ago. Out of all the Broadway shows performed there (Jekyll & Hyde, 42nd Street and The Phantom of the Opera), Phantom was by far the best. Not only in attendance (1500 the afternoon of my interview) but for its music and magic. The Art Center is the largest theatre in Daegu and everyone I have seen at the end of each performance of the Phantom came out HAPPY AND AMAZED!

Pirates of Penzance Opera Spoonful April Production Submitted by the Opera Spoonful
Theatre in Daegu is always a wonderful thing. April 2014 brings another rollicking production to life. Victoria Anderson has been fortunate to be involved with several amazing productions; Cock, Princess Bride, and Baggage Claim to name a few. This is why she’s super stoked to produce and direct Pirates of Penzance for Opera Spoonful.
the audience involved. For Victoria, it gave her license to let her uber geek card fly. Because Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance is in public domain, she was able to re-write it to include many geek culture references. Victoria work-shopped it with Jarrod Clegg, Elaine Fenwick, Rose Bradshaw, and Jeremy Foster. “We were all on the same page and we totally pushed it to 11.”
Victoria was inspired by Jarrod Clegg’s Princess Bride production. Says Victoria, “He had a wonderful team to work with and I wanted to recreate that camaraderie with another production. I felt out several different options amongst my mates and came up with Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. Everyone was eager to see that get off the ground. Usually panto is associated with winter and Christmas. To wit, I got the idea in December of 2013. I was a bit homesick, I guess. Panto is rowdy and loud and very much fun for everyone involved.”
The fun really began with auditions. Victoria wanted the cast to jell and work well together more than she wanted the best talent. “With this cast, I got both! Everyone works so well together, it’s made the production process easy! I can’t wait until April 5 and 6, 2014 when we present our vision of Pirates to the good citizens of Daegu! If you are familiar with panto, you’ll love this. If you are new to panto, come for the experience. Come just to see Jamie Kistler as the pirate king and Jarrod Clegg as the Major General! That alone is worth the price of admission!”
Victoria re-imagined Pirates as a traditional panto. Panto takes familiar stories and injects a bit of music hall or vaudeville into them. It started in the 15th/16th century, but utilizes many contemporary references. The lead boy of the production, Frederick, is played by a woman. The panto Dame is a man in drag. The side-kick keeps

Pohang Inaugural Softball Tournament Weekend of Champions Written and photographed by Sean Rugge
Last year in late spring/early summer, a handful of people in Pohang began organizing on weekends to play softball. As we began to network through facebook with people from Daegu, Gyeongju, Daejeon, Ulsan, Bundang, and other places around Korea, we were able to organize a team together, compete in a couple of tournaments, make some great friendships, and see parts of Korea that some of us probably wouldn’t have seen or known about otherwise. During the fall we continued to have games regularly and developed a friendly rivalry with Gyeongju as we would coordinate to play any opportunity that we could. Each opportunity to get together and play provided an atmosphere of camaraderie and gentle trash talk mixed with the benefit of getting some exercise. Having gone through this experience, the next logical step was for Pohang to become host for a tournament in this city by the sea. However, there is so much more to our city than the group of fast friends who love playing softball together. If you enjoy beaches, just north of the city, Chilpo and Wolpo beach are two of the more widely visited beaches in the Pohang area during the summer season attracting those looking for a pension stay, a camping spot on the shore, or the occasional summer wave session. In the city, Yeongildae (formerly Bukbu beach) has become a nightlife spot for many featuring a boardwalk along the bay littered with hotels, restaurants, and bars overlooking the vibrant lights from Posco. The street behind the main boardwalk has several amenities as well, including some more affordable options for accommodation as well as one of the main foreigner spots in Pohang;Tilt Bar n Grill. If you prefer hiking in the mountains and freshwater to saltwater, Bogyeongsa, nestled into the mountains north of the city, presents a hike that features 12 waterfalls with several spots to rest your feet in the cool mountain stream along the way up or coming back http://daegucompass.com
down and you may even see some folks taking a dip in the deep pools carved out of the rock by the forces of water and time. So while you can visit us for some softball, there is so much more to see and do. Pohang's first ever Buddha Bowl Softball Tournament sponsored by Pohang’s Tilt Bar n Grill, is a 2 day softball tournament to be held Sunday, May 4th and Monday, May 5th (Children's Day) at the Gok River Soccer and Baseball fields in Heunghae a suburb of Pohang (near Chilpo Beach) and about a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the northern part of town (Bukgu). Minimum of 4 teams with a of maximum 8 teams. Guaranteed 4 games, maximum of 6 games. Sunday, May 4th - Day 1 - round robin style (3 games) on the grass soccer fields by Gok River Monday, May 5th - Day 2 - Single elimination playoffs (at least 1 game, possibly 3) on dirt baseball fields (adjacent to the soccer fields) Costs - 200,000 per team. Rosters – between 10 – 13 players with a maximum of 10 guys and minimum of 2 girls per team. 2 girls must play on defense at all times. Prizes – dependent on number of teams if 8 teams 1st place 500,000 2nd place 250,000 if 6 teams 1st place 400,000 2nd place 200,000 if 4 teams 1st place 350,000 (no second place prize) If you're interested in bringing a team, add me on FB or post here and I'll add you or email me at shagrugg@ facebook.com or give me a call 010-4076-7733. Screenprinting in Daegu Supporting a Community of Creativity Written by Jess Hinshaw / Photos by Lundie-Louis Robert / Translated by Yujeong Lee
MESH Printing started out as a way to meet other artists and share with them. Before moving to Korea, I was working a few different screenprinting places in Atlanta. When I got to Korea, I set out to find the materials to get started printing again, which proved difficult. However, once I had all the necessary materials I began printing some work. Before long, I realized that I wanted to find other printmakers here. I started meeting with people and showing them how to create art in the small apartments of South Korea. As you know, so many expats here are teachers (including myself). Schedules vary, but a lot of us teach at night, leaving our entire day free. I posted a message about the meeting on some facebook groups, and realized that so many people here are looking for something productive to do with their time. I wasn’t sure how much interest there would be, but the meeting filled so quickly that I had to offer another one the following weekend. Some had some art experience, but most were just interested in learning something new.
Through this I met Chris Cote, who I immediately made a connection with. He’d never screenprinted before, but before long we decided to work together on these printing meetings and our own work. We found a small space that we could call a studio, and started printing and showing people how to print. We decided we’d use the space for two purposes: to print our work and to share with others how to screenprint.

In South Korea, screenprinting is a still considered a very industrial medium. Though Daegu is a pretty large city, finding materials here proved a difficult task since they are located in an industrial district, not in an art store. It took me nearly 6 months to find all of the materials needed to print, and we are still finding new places with better supplies.
Our meetings do a few different things. For one thing, we show people where they can get materials. We then cover the basics of coating, burning, and printing screens, but we tailor it specifically to those who have very little space and don’t have the perks of a studio light table and dedicated printing space. We show them how to expose a screen with the sun, how to print without hinges, using their shower as a drying/ washout room, and other DIY methods. Due to the size of our studio, our meetings can only accommodate 8 people. This is really the perfect number though, allowing each attendee to get plenty of one-on-one attention.

We offer two opportunities to learn, a beginner’s session and an advanced session. We require that everyone take the beginner’s session first to learn the basics. The twohour beginner session focuses on paper printing while the advanced class gets into fabric printing and multiple colors. The advanced class has the students leave with their own screen, with their artwork burned into it. Recently we acquired a t-shirt printing press, and are looking forward to incorporating that into our sessions. We really want people to get started printing after they leave, and to be excited about it. The more printers in the city, the better.
We’ve held almost a dozen meetings in 2+ years, and continue to see growth and interest in them. We do our best to make it accessible to everyone, artistically inclined or not. There has been an increased diversity in who is attending our events;
Daegu Community - Screenprinting in Daegu
we have taught students from South Africa, Australia, Ireland, Korea, and more. Bringing people from different nationalities together in the name of screenprinting feels pretty good.
Our next meeting will be in April. The best way to find out details on dates and times is to join the Art Daegu facebook page. We always post here first when decide on a meeting time. You can also look us up on the MESH Printing facebook page, or email us at meshprinting@gmail. com.
If you aren’t exactly sure what screenprinting is, you can see some of our work on our website, www. meshprint.blogspot.com. We love making art and we love sharing what we know. Let us know if you want to get involved!

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Next, swing by the minature golf course and Suseong Land. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow. Photos by Aygul Sarvarova, Chanel Barlow and Jeremy Taylor
Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Seomun Market is Daegu’s biggest market. Each type of product is concentrated in a specific area. BARGAIN, it’s challenging, but fun. We hope you have an awesome time and try to enjoy and see as much of the market as possible. We would like to thank Dyren J. Billups-Adam for his photos of the different areas. Thanks bud!

Connoisseur Check out these other great eats around town.
Apsan Area Gooksu Gooksu is known for its 'slow food' approach when preparing its delicious dishes for customers. Slow food doesn't mean it takes hours to cook, it just means everything is made from scratch. The restaurant has an Italian Firenze style atmosphere and serve fabulous pasta dishes. It is also famous for its T-bone steak and Ripieno pizza. Try it tonight! Your taste buds won't be disappointed. Check out the Apsan Map on p59 for directions. 12PM~12AM • 053-625-1365 • 2, Hyeonchungro7-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu
12 Kitchen & Bar Homemade style pizza and pasta are on the menu at 12 Kitchen & Bar. The chef and owner, Yoon Gyeong-su, has studied in Italy and brought back some amazing recipes. The restaurant uses organic vegetables and ingredients from their own farm. If you are a meat lover and looking for the best steak in Daegu, this may be the place to come. 1kg of succulent, juicy T-bone steak served with roasted potatoes and garlic is a mouth watering, inducing thought just waiting to fill your appetite. Check out the Apsan Map on p59 for directions. 11:30AM~10:30PM • 053-652-8007 • 41-1, Hyunchoong-ro, Nam-gu, Daegu
Bongdeok-dong Area Hamimami's The best brunch restaurant in Daegu. HamiMami's has been in Bongdeok area since 2008. HamiMami's serves real western style breakfast, sandwiches, burritos, and other comfort food foreigners enjoy while living in Korea. Mr. Ha's friends shared special home-made recipes that they craved to eat in Korea, but couldn't find before; making HamiMami's an one of a kind restaurant. HamiMami's home-made biscuits, gravy, hash browns and sausages are the best in the country. They also have fresh bread delivered daily to make their sandwiches irresistible. Come on down to HamiMami's and experience a bit of home. 8AM~9PM(break time for weekdays : 3PM~5PM) • closed on Mondays 053-475-5242 • 87, Samjeong-gil, Nam-gu, Daegu

Daebong-dong Barazi Barazi brings Japanese flair to Daegu. Barazi specializes in great Japanese cuisine. The restaurant feels like a home away from home. The soothing atmosphere provides customers a chance to relax with a cup of tea or some warm saki! The owner of Barazi is also an expert florist and can help arrange all your floral needs. Check the Bangcheon Market Compass Map on p59 for directions. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 12PM~12AM • 010-4505-3396 • 13-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Gajok Gajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 1PM~1AM • 053-252-1481 • 7-16, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Daehan News / Two Ppul Grilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided compliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls sheltering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. <Daeghan News> 12PM~12AM • 053-423-3990 • 6, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu <Two Ppul> 5PM~1AM • 053-422-1033 • 7-15, Dalgubeoldaeto446-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu
Pic&iq VIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reservation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions. 6PM~11PM • 053-253-9782 • 2232-15, Dalgubeol-daero, Jung-gu, Daegu closed on Sundays
Kim Gwang-suk Road Not far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

Relatively new to Daegu, about 2 years old now, this restaurant is a great escape from the retro-urban decor that most Daegu restaurants display. A cozy interior with exotic tapestries of the far east adorning the walls. Reasonable prices and great Thali sets round out this establishment.
